Salar Is Now Open

May 31, 2013 By Lisa Grigsby 1 Comment

480999_164515687048312_1882105122_nIt’s been a long time since Dayton has gotten this excited about a new business opening, but if the over 500 guests that packed out the VIP Grand Opening Reception for Salar Restaurant and Lounge on Wed  are any indication, this Oregon District Restaurant will be a hit.  Chef/Owner Margot Blondet has created a menu inspired by Mediterranean, Peruvian and French cuisine, the interior has been remodeled  and the cocktails have gone upscale, courtesy of  three star Michelin rated mixologist Brian Van Flandern.

While I usually am the first one to say “never judge a restaurant in the first few weeks“, we celebrated my friend Nicole’s birthday last night at Salar, on the first night they were open to the public.  It always  takes a while for the staff and kitchen  to learn the ebb and flow of the restaurant. Seven of us arrived with anticipation and excitement, and since most of the group have worked in restaurants we agreed not to judge too hard.  Other than a few timing issues, we all were quite impressed with the feast of flavors we shared.

We started with a few appetizers to share:

Salar apps

Shrimp Wonton’s with a spicy peruvian chili pepper and passion fruit dipping sauce
crispy rings of fried calamari,  marinated in smoked paprika served with roasted pepper garlic aioli, Peruvian Empanadas-  beef  tenderloin filled turnovers with a Peruvian kick, Chorizo in Sherry – chorizo onions and red bell peppers served with a sliced baguette and an old favorite I was glad to see on the menu: Seafood Pizza- shrimp, scallops, mozzarella and provolone with fresh basil and baby spinach- or ask my friend Karen said when I posted this picture on Facebook- Seafoodorgasm!

The portions were plentiful and we all decided to move right into entrees, agreeing to each order a different meal and share.  Words can ‘t do the food we enjoyed justice, and these photo’s don’t really convey the beauty on the platings either.  Remember, we were celebrating a birthday and not really there to review Salar, but we wanted to share, because so many people have been asking.

salarmeal3

We also had a Pork Filet Mignon, but for some reason  I don’t have that picture.  The Cabernet Sauvignon reduction served with the Duck Ravioli and the Chardonnay and Saffron sauce that was served with the Salmon were so good, we asked our waiter to bring us bread so we could dip and enjoy the sauces, after we’d devoured our meals!  Our server Benjamin was great and very helpful, keeping our waters full and replacing silverware as needed.  Great attention to detail this early on is a great sign of good staff training.

entrees2

And of course a great meal is not complete without sampling desserts.  We orded each of dessertsthe desserts listed on the menu.  As a group we all agreed our favorite was the Lucuma Croustillant – a pecan pavloca with lucuma mousse topped with chocolate ganace (served in a martini glass).  The Chocolate Shades mousse cake came in second followed closely by the Passion Fuite Tres Leches cake.  We all agreed the Volador was our least favorite, the combination of thin crackly pastry with creamy dulces de leche.  It was just a little dry and might benefit from a cream anglise or fruit sauce, but that was the only miss of the entire meal!

Salar is open Monday – Saturday starting at 5pm. Reservations are most definitely suggested- you can call 203-3999 or reserve online with OpenTable.  For now Salar is just serving dinner, lunch will be added soon. Kudos to Chef Margot, Harry and the staff- you’re off to a great start!

NATIONAL BUSINESS ETIQUETTE WEEK, JUNE 2 – 8, 2013

May 31, 2013 By Leah Hawthorn Leave a Comment

123rf-Etiquette-300x195Protocol and etiquette are no longer relegated to the international diplomatic community.  Knowledge of business protocol & etiquette is necessary for anyone engaged in local or global business and exchange.  We must be an enjoy for the firm we represent, equipped with knowledge and understanding of business and social customs of the person with whom we are negotiating.  It is this know-how that will bring success.

TOP TEN BUSINESS ETIQUETTE TIPS

1.  Enter a room with confidence and authority.  You are in the spotlight.  Use it to your advantage.  Entering a room and quickly heading for the food or drink station is counterproductive.  Never suh into a room.  This allows you to see key people that you would like to meet and network with.

2.  Stand tall and keep great posture while networking.  If you slouch, or have bad posture, you look like you don’t really want to be there and you also look tired.  The correct posture will give you one inch in height and will lose you 10 pounds.

3.  Smile.  The first thing you should do while you enter a room, shake someone’s hand and small talk, is smile.  No one wants to talk to someone that looks uninviting.

image003

4.  Know what appropriate and inappropriate eye contact is for business.  In the U.S., direct eye contact is a sign of trust and confidence, and is a must while networking.  If you are doing business with other countries and cultures, research the eye contact in that country.  Some countries expect more eye contact than we do in the U.S. and some expect much less.

5.  Always give a firm handshake.  Make sure you give a smile and great eye contact while shaking somneone’s hand.  If doing business in the international arena, it is said that the American handshake toned down just a bit is worldwide and acceptable.

6.  Properly introduce yourself.  “Hello, my name is Brian Smith.  I am the new Manager for Time Travel Agency”.  Always say your name and who you are representing.

7.  Know what is acceptable and unacceptable to talk about in the business arena.  Stay away from politics and religion.  Small talk is an art and it takes practice.  Remember, if you are meeting someone for the first time, and they are not your best friend, knowing who you voted for and what religion you are might change the way they think of you.  It’s only human.

8.  Accept someone’s business card with respect.  Make sure you look at it before putting it in a respectable place.  Hand the business card face forward so the person you’re networking with doesn’t have to turn it around.  Always carry a business card holder or keep your cards in the side pocket of your jacket, easy to access.

9.  Cell phone’s should be turned off or on vibrate.  If you need to take a call, excuse yourself and step outside.

10.  Last, but not least, focus on the other person you are networking with.  There is nothing worse than to network with someone you don’t know and they have told you their life story and don’t ask you who you are or who you are with.  Make sure you take the time to let the other person sepak.  Let them know you care about what they have to say as well.  Ask them what company they are with and how they got started in their business.

True succcess isn’t attained by only taking the easy path; it’s achieved by walking through rough and bumpy terrain, even it it gets a litt painful and scary.

Fleurs Et Vin: A Great Success at Carrillon Park

May 31, 2013 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Each Guest Received Souvenir Glasses

Did you miss it?  Endless wine tasting and all the food samplings you wanted were featured at the 2013 Fleurs et Vin Festival held at Carillon Park on May 19th.  The Big Ragu was on hand with Dayton Most Metro’s staff, greeting the massive crowds and sample the various offerings.  It was a Food Adventure paradise in the heart of Dayton, and a must eat on our list of events.

If you were not able to make it to this annual benefit for the AIDS Resource Center Ohio, then check out our recap, below.

Here’s the Skinny:

— FLEURS ET VIN is Dayton’s Premier Wine and Gourmet Food Festival, typically held each year on a Sunday in May from 1-4pm under the tents at Carrillon Historical Park.  It is an all-you-want tasting event with a loyal following.

— ALL of the food and wine was donated by locally owned restaurants, allowing 100% of the proceeds to benefit AIDS Resource Center of Dayton.  A Food Adventure with a cause

— Admission price allowed you access to over 400 wines from around the world and taste menu samples from 20 local restaurants, along with a Belgian Beer Garden area !

— Live and Silent Auction areas allowed even more funds to be raised for this worthy cause that focuses of prevention and education about AIDS, along with service programs that help those in need with HIV/AIDS.

— Live music filled the air and added to the warm ambiance.

With so many good wines and so much good food, below are our picks for the best of the best from this spectacular event!

Crab Rangoon from Thai 9.  Our Favorite Rangoon in Dayton.

OUR FAVORITES  (THE FOOD):

Thai 9’s Crab Rangoon and Chicken with Rice:  In our opinion, the best crab rangoon in the Dayton area were these incredible samples from Thai9.  Stuffed full and deep, and served with a sweet side of Thai sauce, we found ourselves returning to this line often.  The Thai chicken dish was also incredible at this station.  It was a Thai pepper chicken, served in a brown, curry house sauce over a bed of white rice.  We told them we loved it, but our mouths were so full that they couldn’t understand us.

The Dock’s Crab Cakes:  Slowly seared on their portable flat top grill, these were flavorful, hand-packed circles of love.  The sauce that topped the crab cakes was the secret ingredient that kept us coming back for more.  The staff of The Dock probably wanted to file a restraining order against us for hanging out by their grill as much as we did.  We could not resist seconds of these scrumptious bites of crab heaven.

Hawthorn Grill’s  Sorbet and Strawberry ShortCake: All of the desserts at Hawthorn Grill are homemade by Chef Candace and her staff.   Her sorbet was a perfect, refreshing break during this hot event.  The bite size piece of cake, topped with a strawberry sauce also hit the spot.

Scratch Catering’s Beef Brisket and Carmelized Onion Bruschetta:  When doesn’t Chef Matt Hayden please the hungry crowds?  This delicious, slow-cooked sampling was just as pleasing to the eye, as it was to our taste buds.  The hits from Scratch Catering just keep on coming ….

OUR FAVORITES (THE WINES):

Canella Blood Orange Mimosa:  Talk about refreshing!   This tasty, bottled mimosa was the perfect drink, on this hot day.  The server at this booth had to be tired of us by the end of the event.   Probably our favorite offering from the Vintage Wine Distributor.  This Italian wine cocktail is made from grape wine and the juice and pulp of blood oranges from Sicily.

Heron Chardonnay:  A crisp, white wine made from 22 year old grape vines.  The winery is a female owned, family vineyard run by Laely Heron.   One of the few American women who made wine in France, Heron’s products are also produced in California.

Spreitzer Riesling 101:  This German Riesling comes from a winery owned by two brothers who have been honing their craft since 1997.  It was a cold, refreshing sip of sparkling goodness in the warm weather.

The Belgian Beer Garden: Although this was a wine festival, Heidelberg Distributing distracted us with some great beer selections.  Food Adventures enjoyed a couple of  Stella Artois beers in a souvenir pint.  The Big Ragu went for some Hoegaarden beer and an Ommegang Witte Beer.

All in all, this is Dayton’s “Wine me and dine me” Festival.  We loved being a part of a wonderful event, that supported a locally based AIDS charity.  Good local food and world class wines, what more could one ask for?   So let us end this Food Adventure, by raising our glass with a toast.. “Whether you love Merlot or Chardonnay, here’s to seeing you at Fleurs et Vin, next May!!”

RENOIR9.jpgHello Everyone,

Another 2 new films are heading to THE NEON this weekend – RENOIR and TO THE WONDER…and MUD will stick around for another week.  We’ve had several really great, fun films come and go rather quickly around here (i.e. – STARBUCK, THE SAPPHIRES).  If you see a title that piques your interest, hurry down.  It may not stick around too long.

Every year, The Dayton Daily News holds a contest for “Best Movie Theater.” Special thanks to all of you who took the time to vote. WE WON…and we couldn’t have done it without you!

Synopsis for RENOIR: “Set on the French Riviera in the summer of 1915, Jean Renoir — son of the Impressionist painter, Pierre-Auguste — returns home to convalesce after being wounded in World War I. At his side is Andree, a young woman who rejuvenates, enchants, and inspires both father and son.” (taken from Samuel Goldwyn Films) Click this LINK to visit the film’s official site.

Synopsis for TO THE WONDER (One Week Only!): “The anticipated new feature from renowned filmmaker Terrence Malick (Tree of Life, The New World), TO THE WONDER boldly and lyrically explores the complexities of love in all its forms. Parisian single mother Marina (Olga Kurylenko) and Midwestern tourist Neil (Ben Affleck) fall madly in love in France and relocate to Oklahoma with Marina’s young daughter to start a life together. As their relationship wanes and her visa nears expiration, Marina makes the acquaintance of a priest and fellow exile (Javier Bardem) who is struggling with his faith, while Neil renews a relationship with his childhood sweetheart, Jane (Rachel McAdams).” (taken from Magnolia Pictures) Click this LINK to visit the film’s official site. If you’re interested in the films of Terrence Malick, you won’t want to miss this one on the big screen.

Less than 10 seats remain for our upcoming special screening of GIRL RISING. For more about this film, click this LINK. Advanced tickets are only available on the website listed above. If tickets remain, we will be able to sell them at the door on the night of the show. Watch the trailer…this film looks terrific!

On Thursday, June 20 at 7:30, we will host a special screening of the new film I DO. (I saw this film at The Cleveland International Film Festival, and the audience adored it!) “A gay Brit living in New York is deprived of his immigration status, and risks losing his family and life in the U.S. He marries his lesbian best friend to remain in the country and stay with his family, but things get complicated when he meets the love of his life and is forced to make an impossible choice.” This one night only screening is part of Dayton’s PRIDE festivities. Tickets are $9 for General Admission. Members of The Greater Dayton LGBT Center get in for $7 (with valid membership card). Tickets are on sale now at THE NEON’s box office (I’ll also be at the PRIDE event on Courthouse Square this Saturday…with tickets ready to sell).

Dayton Gay Men’s Chorus present: ‘Turn it UP!’ + Ticket Contest

May 30, 2013 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

DGMC Turn It UpThe Dayton Gay Men’s Chorus is pleased to once again be filling the stage at Dayton’s Victoria Theatre for their June 1st concert, “Turn it UP!”, which will celebrate the DGMC’s ten year anniversary of choral performance in the Greater Miami Valley.

This year’s concert features audience and chorus favorites from the past ten years, as well as new compositions, which have been specifically commissioned for Gay Men’s Choruses across the country.

DGMC Artistic Director, Jason Coatney-Schuler, has weaved a thought-provoking historical tapestry, which takes the audience on a journey from the chorus’s appearance on the stairs of the Schuster Center, when it opened its doors ten years ago, into the world of Americana, Broadway, Cole Porter, Queen, Village People, and ABBA.

“Turn it UP!” completes the DGMC’s 2012-2013 season, “TEN: Then and Now”, and promises to entertain, inspire, and “rock” the audience of all generations. Board President David Moyer applauds the chorus and its director for celebrating not only their past success, but also projecting a compelling future for the DGMC. “Jason continues to lead the chorus to new levels of choral excellence. No emotion will be left untouched for this special concert, as the chorus soothes the soul, then rocks the house!” This will also be Dayton’s first chance to “glimpse” into what the DGMC has in store for their 2013-2014 season, including the commission of a world premiere choral work.

Dayton Bike Share: More Than an Idea

May 29, 2013 By Dayton Most Metro 1 Comment

Murphy says, “We wanted to answer the question of whether the Dayton region was
ready for bike sharing.
What we found from our research is that the answer is yes.”

With bronze-level recognition from the League of American Bicyclists already in hand, Bike Miami Valley has their eye on the prize of making Dayton one of the most bike-friendly cities around. What’s exciting is that they’re taking the steps needed to make it more than a good idea.

This Friday at an afternoon session of the Miami Valley Cycling Summit, Scott Murphy – one of the volunteers leading the bike share effort – will present the results of an in-depth feasibility study that 1) surveyed citizen interest and 2) examined regional data to determine if the region could sustain a bike share.

The more obvious of the two questions is that our community is excited by a bike share. Bike Miami Valley’s survey demonstrated that there is strong support among local young professionals for the concept (98%) and high interest in using the system (74%). This writer’s first guess was that it was mostly current cyclists answering (of course they want it), but the survey reached out into a much wider community. Over 54% of survey respondents don’t currently use a bike for transportation (and an additional 30% only use a bike “sometimes”).  What would they think about a bike share? When broken out to the current non-riders – 80% support a bike share and over 50% are likely to use it. The survey went into a lot more detail – where would you ride, what kind of trips would be appropriate for bike share, when are you likely to ride, etc. This data was used to better determine how a bike share in Dayton would look and will be featured as part of the Cycling Summit presentation.

So – the people want to ride. But wanting something (see previous stories on grocery stores, music halls, etc) doesn’t mean that downtown has the infrastructure to support it.

Or does it?

Yes, it does.

Part two of the feasibility study focuses on the current infrastructure, population density, retail density, and other important factors that demonstrate bike share readiness. Note– current state of being. Bike Miami Valley doesn’t argue that if a few more shops come downtown or if more people move in, we could handle it. Downtown Dayton is ready now.

The team analyzed a two-county region to see where the ideal bike share area may be. They considered population, shopping, restaurants/bars, tourist attractions, topography, and many other factors to see where the greatest critical mass for bike share exists. The bike share demand analysis found a four square mile area around downtown Dayton that’s ideal (north to Dayton Art Institute, west to Wright-Dunbar, east to St. Anne’s Hill, south to University of Dayton). This area includes a high population density and retail, an abundance of university students, current bike lanes, trails and infrastructure, connections to the RTA bus system and a relatively flat topography.

In addition to looking at the factors that would make Dayton successful, they ran the same analysis against other cities that already have bike shares (San Antonio, TX, Boulder, CO, Chattanooga, TN and others). How does Dayton stack up? We’re equal (and in some cases higher) on most of the factors linked to successful bike shares around the country.  “We were surprised to learn that our bike share demand is actually higher in Dayton than in other cities that have sustained bike sharing,” says Andy Williamson, another Bike Miami Valley volunteer who helped lead the effort.

So – the people want it and the region can sustain it. But Bike Miami Valley isn’t done yet.

“For cities that have started bike shares, the first step is always addressing the feasibility,” says Murphy.  Next steps include conversations with community stakeholders to share the results and to collaborate on a business plan analysis to finalize the station locations, choose an operational model, and identify sources of funds. The feasibility study includes an proposed analysis from the team’s work applying industry standards to size the bike share network, identify possible station locations, and estimate the capital and operational costs.

Although membership will help to sustain the bike share, many cities have secured federal grants to partially fund the start-up and operations costs and sponsorships and advertising are an easy fit. The Bike Miami Valley team proposes a model where riders join with a daily, monthly and yearly membership with the swipe of a credit card at any of the bike stations. Members can take unlimited 30-minutes rides around the service area with no additional usage fees. Revenue estimates show the transportation system could approach self-sustainment from user fares as early as five years after the launch.  “Bike sharing has already proven to be more self-sustaining than other forms of public transit,” says Williamson. “Fare revenue covers a much greater percentage of the annual operating cost than the national average for rail or bus transportation.”

It’s a good idea, and with this volunteer team it’s a lot more than that.

Get all the details (and see the data, charts, maps, etc) when they unveil the feasibility study results at the Cycling Summit this Friday.

Comedian Paula Poundstone To Return To Dayton

May 27, 2013 By Lisa Grigsby Leave a Comment

0708_paula-poundstone-624x499Stand Up Comic Paula Poundstone is probably best known lately as a regular panelist on the National Public Radio comedic current-events show “Wait Wait … Don’t Tell Me!”  Her quirky style and razor sharp often make for some of the best moments on the show and her stand up is no different.  Her last Dayton appearance was in March 2003 at the now defunct Jokers Comedy Cafe, where she displayed  her gift for crowd work.  Her very conversational style often leads to Q & A with the audience, peppered with easy laughs that come from Paula’s unscripted observations. And when she’s not playing with the crowd, you’ll probably hear about Paula’s cats, she seems to be obsessed with cats and even has a cat cam on her website.

Paula’s return to Dayton will be Fri, Oct 11th at 7:30pm at the Victoria Theatre and tickets will run $25, $30 or $35.

Password pre-sale begins Tuesday, 5/28 at 10:00 AM EDT and concudes Thursday, 5/30 at midnight EDT.

The market will be held on a vacant lot, formerly a McDonald’s restaurant site, which is owned by the city. “This seemed like the ideal location because it’s easily accessible and has right the combination of green space and pavement for parking,” said Brad Townsend, city manager.

According to statistics from the Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission, about 13,000 vehicles pass the site each day.  “With our newly improved interstate access at Exit 47, we are excited to be able to showcase our community as well as provide fresh fruits and vegetables to our residents and visitors,” Townsend said.

A Facebook page has been recently created to highlight the new market, and keep up with vendors as they are added.
