Ghostlight Coffee Celebrates Second Anniversary With Second Location Announcement

November 14, 2013 By Lisa Grigsby Leave a Comment

In November of 2011, things changed in South Park.  With the opening of a cozy coffee shop  who focused on high quality, hand crafted beverages and snacks, suddenly  the Dayton community began to flock to this Wayne Avenue location.

Owner Shane Anderson explains that Ghostlight Coffee is a “multi-roaster

shop,” featuring a rotating selection of coffees from many of the best roasters in America, including Deeper Roots Coffee (Cincinnati), MadCap Coffee (Grand Rapids, MI), Handsome Coffee (L.A.), Bows & Arrows Coffee (Victoria, B.C.) and Sightglass Coffee (San Francisco).  Ghostlight was voted  “Best of Dayton – Best Cup of Coffee” in 2012 by the readers of ActiveDayton.com &  Dayton Daily News.
Ghostlight Coffee has become a  popular “community minded” coffeehouse, hosting many AfterHours events such as music and poetry and featuring local artists on it’s walls.  It has gained popularity amongst touring musicians for it’s “listening room” atmosphere, different from most bar venues that these musicians frequently encounter.  It also has become the home of the “Gem City Poetry Stage” and previously hosted the popular “Story Slamm” series until they moved to the larger Dayton Black Box theatre. Just recently they opened a meeting room which doubles as a quiet study space for it’s many university students and professors.  The business will soon expand services to offer coffee & espresso bar catering for events and online ordering of coffees and gift boxes for individual and corporate orders.

But with their second anniversary comes another expansion:   Ghostlight at Night in the Dayton Art Institute!

Ghostlight at Night will feature hand-poured, artisan roasted coffees by Ghostlight Coffee and hand-crafted signature cocktails by the Dayton Cocktail Co., as well as a small-plate menu of sharable snacks. Ghostlight at Night hours will be Tuesday – Friday, 3:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., beginning Friday, November 22 and continuing through January 3.

“The holidays are a busy time here at the museum, and this wonderful new partnership with Ghostlight Coffee allows us to offer guests a unique evening experience1470317_392642647533235_1664257405_n in Leo Bistro,” says The DaytonArt Intitute’s Associate Director Jane A. Black. “Ghostlight at Night will complement Elite Catering’s weekday lunch and weekend brunch service at the Bistro.”

Ghostlight at Night will host several evening events at the Leo Bistro location, including:
“The Art of Coffee” Tastings Events, including November 22nd…Tasting of the new Panama Geisha coffee, roasted by Deeper Roots Coffee.  The roaster will be on hand to talk about this rare coffee varietal.
“The Art of the Cocktail” Events, hosted by The Dayton Cocktail Co., including December 5 Repeal Day Party, featuring prohibition era cocktails and punches.
Live Music at Leo Bistro, including December 6, featuring The Soucek Jazz Trio, a popular ensemble comprised of area music educators frequently performs at the Wayne Ave. coffeehouse to a packed house.

In addition to Ghostlight at Night, Leo Bistro will continue to offer full lunch service, powered bty Elite Catering. A full menu of soups, sandwiches, salads and entrees is available Tuesday – Friday, 11 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Leo Bistro also offers a weekend brunch menu, servedSaturday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., and Sunday, noon – 5 p.m.

Ghostlight at Night is part of a host of holiday-related events and programs at The Dayton Art Institute. These include the special exhibitions Object of Devotion and Elizabeth Turk: Wings, now on view through January 5; the Hall of Holidays exhibition Marc Chagall: Jerusalem Window Lithographs, on view November 29 – February 23; an artist-decorated holiday tree and ornament silent auction, November 26 – January 5; holiday-themed Super Saturday Family Days on December 7, 14 and 21; the Fifth Third Bank Arts Night Out presentation Spontaneous Fantasia on December 5; and a special holiday Afternoon Musicale with David Wion & Friends on December 1.

Morph Fire Rocks Dayton’s Cradle of Creativity

November 14, 2013 By Dayton Most Metro 1 Comment

IMG_9388Creativity, innovations and patents have long been part of Dayton’s rich history. Determined visionaries have earned this region of Ohio such titles as: Tinkertown, The Birthplace of Aviation, and The Cradle of Creativity.

Ryan Levin is one such Daytonian who is rockin’ that Creative Cradle. He’s an exciting entrepreneur that has taken his unique vision, combined it with hard work and determination, and turned his dream into reality.

An expert marksman, avid gun collector, and successful business man, Ryan Levin is the founder of LEVTEC and inventor of Morph Fire. What’s Morph Fire…? In the world of the paintball enthusiast, it’s the most exciting thing to ever happen in this avant-garde sporting arena and so cleverly radical that once paintball users understand what it is… they’ll want to have one… maybe even two.

Morph Fire is a revolutionary converter that turns a paintball gun into a tricked-out, incredibly powerful BB “machine” gun. That’s right… a BB “machine-gun.” It can fire 900 rounds a minute and can propel a .12g BB up to 600+ feet per second (fps).  It’s fast. It’s powerful. It’s easy and affordable. It is also serious fun! But…Morph Fire is definitely NOT a toy!

In less than 60 seconds, this conversion kit can take the “Host Paintball Gun” or HPG and morphs it into a totally new dimension. It looks and sounds like a machine-gun. The neat thing is – it converts, or “morphs” back to a paintball gun just as easily.

morphPaintball can be an expensive hobby and if you already own a paintball gun – Morph Fire creates a renewed interest in your current investment. You’ll get a whole new sporting use for your existing item that is not affected by any ammo shortage. Plus, this ammo is significantly cheaper on your wallet. If you were thinking about getting into paintball, Morph Fire now gives you multiple reasons to take the plunge.

For those folks that love to shoot, this device is a blast! It’s made of strong, long-strand glass-enforced urethane and designed to work with CO2, compressed air or nitrogen. Even though it is light weight, you can easily set your sights on any bottle, can, paper target or rotten tomato within 100 feet and fire away. Morph Fire will destroy them.

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJmBL5Mazb8′]

Whether or not you are into the world of paintball or have a love for shooting, there is an appreciation of the American spirit hard at work with Morph Fire. It was invented, designed, patented, and developed right here in Dayton. It’s also being manufactured within 10 miles of LEVTEC’s local corporate office – this means Morph Fire is bringing multiple jobs to our community through its engineering, manufacturing, assembly, packaging and distribution processes. It’s truly a turn-key product that’s totally “Made in the U.S.A.”

New ideas, fresh approaches, and product innovations are just a few of the qualities that contribute to the “winning spirit” of Dayton. Daytonians like Ryan Levin are helping to keep that spirit alive by rockin’ our Creative Cradle once again. You can follow Moreph Fire on Facebook to keep up with the latest news on this Dayton Original.

ALL IS LOST will be a short run (please hurry down if you’d like to see it)…we are still planning to open DALLAS BUYERS CLUB on Nov. 22. If you still need to see HOW I LIVE NOW, you only have until tomorrow (Thursday). Check out our website for remaining showtimes.

Synopsis for ALL IS LOST: “Academy Award winner Robert Redford stars in ALL IS LOST, an open-water thriller about one man’s battle for survival against the elements after his sailboat is destroyed at sea. Tonight’s screening of THE TRIUMPH is sold out, but an encore screening has been set for Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 7:30. The local, faith-based non-profit hosting this screening is delighted that the demand for these tickets is so high. “THE TRIUMPH is a powerful new documentary film about our Blessed Mother’s apparitions in Medjugorje. On June 25, 1981, in the mountain village of Medjugorje in Bosnia Herzegovina, Our Lady appeared to six children. She identified herself as the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Peace, and continues to appear to several of the visionaries even today.” (taken from Lovey Dovey, Inc. press notes) $10 presale tickets are only available via this LINK from Love Dovey, Inc. Remaining tickets will be sold at THE NEON on the night of the screening.

“Come support GLSEN at the Dayton Premiere of SCARY NORMAL on Thursday November 21st at 7:30. Tickets are available on a sliding scale – pay what you can – $15-$50. Director Jennifer Bechtel presents this coming-of-age romantic comedy about Chelsea, a teenager who just wants to be seen as normal. However, her stepdad’s life as an independent filmmaker leaves her surrounded by wild, colorful characters and often embarrassed and frustrated by her family. Along comes Danielle, a sometimes brash, almost always self-confident young lesbian who has been kicked out of her own family because of her sexuality. Through their friendship, Chelsea starts to realize the true value of friends and family who love unconditionally. About GLSEN: For 25 years GLSEN, the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network has been the leading national education organization focused on ensuring safe schools for all students.” (taken from GLSEN Dayton press notes) Tickets are now available at THE NEON.

Here’s a little something special. It’s a picture I took from the front row of a screening of 12 YEARS A SLAVE at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. The Q&A after the screening was both insightful and powerful.

Surviving Holiday Weight Gain

November 13, 2013 By Lauren Smith Leave a Comment

Holiday-Weight-Gain-2Let’s face it – like it or not, the holidays are quickly approaching. Malls nationwide have had their Christmas decor out for months now, and grocery store meat departments are being inundated with frozen turkeys for Thanksgiving. Soon enough, we’ll be faced with holiday dinners for the office, ugly sweater parties (which are basically just an excuse to get a keg – something you’re never too old for), and Mom’s infamous chocolate snowflake cookies. By the time we get around to kicking off those New Year’s resolutions, we’ll have the added guilt of holiday weight gain to tack on to those pounds we already vow to lose starting in January. But what if we took the steps now to keep the holiday weight gain at bay? It’s totally possible to survive the holidays without gaining weight, and it’s even possible to lose weight during all the festivities. How? Well, start by following these tips:

Make an event calendar. Start by listing all your planned holiday events on a calendar. Include work parties, holiday parties and any other pre-planned events that will involve food and alcohol. If you look at it on the calendar, chances are, it’s not as bad as you thought. On my personal calendar, I’ve got four parties over the next month and a half, plus celebrations on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve. That’s what? Eight days? Eight days. A visual breakdown of your events is a helpful reminder that you don’t have to throw your diet out the window for an entire month just because the holidays seem packed full of food-driven events. Enjoy those pre-planned events, and make it a point to eat mindfully the rest of the time.

Compensate. If you know you’re going to indulge (okay, maybe binge eat cookies like you’re auditioning for the next Cookie Monster), compensate with some exercise or healthy choices made previously that day. Knowing you’re going to have a big dinner or dessert should be motivation to eat light early in the day or hit the treadmill to “earn” those indulgences.

Bring a dish. If you’re heading to a holiday party at someone’s house this year, offer to bring a dish or two to share. Food bloggers like Skinnytaste and Emily Bites offer delicious healthy alternatives to some of your favorite holiday dishes, and by doing this, you can guarantee you’ll have something healthy to snack on while you’re there.

Pack a snack. Fighting the crowds at the malls during the holidays is exhausting. Chances are, you’re going to need a coffee break (since drinking wine while holiday shopping, albeit fun, is probably frowned upon) and a serious snack break to refuel before you tackle the crazies at Bath & Body Works. Instead of hitting the food court or snagging a greasy pretzel, pack a snack from home. KIND bars, a banana or some almonds are great ways to refuel without loading your body full of processed sugars and carbohydrates that will leave you passed out behind the discount DVD box at Target in a food coma.

Alcohol or food: pick one. Chances are, both food and alcohol will be in full force during most holiday celebrations. Instead of overloading on both, pick one indulgence. That doesn’t mean you get to binge drink or eat – just keep in mind that those syrupy shots and peppermint schnapps often have just as many calories in them as a plate of buffalo chicken dip. If you’d rather eat all your favorite goodies, go light on the alcohol that night. And if you’d rather drink your dinner (I’m not an advocate for this, but hey – it happens), fill up on something healthy beforehand so you’re not tempted to hover over the crockpot of BBQ weenies. holiday-weight-gain

Find alternative ways to celebrate. Our society is incredibly food-driven, and we’re taught to celebrate with food from an early age. But we don’t have to. Make it a point to organize an event that doesn’t center around eating sugar-laden goodies. Check out Woodland Lights in Centerville and indulge in a cup of hot chocolate to keep warm. Go ice skating at RiverScape and actually burn calories without sacrificing on fun. Hit up Raise Your Brush to paint and drink wine – you’ll get to take home your painting at the end of the night without the added guilt of consuming the extra calories. Dayton has so much to offer and there’s no law that says we have to focus our holiday celebrations around food.

Commit to a fitness plan. In addition to just compensating for your eating choices with some extra exercise, commit to a fitness plan before the resolutioners come walking through the doors in January like deer in headlights. Give yourself the next month to get comfortable with your new gym (or reacquaint yourself if you haven’t gone in awhile) and establish a routine. Check out some new classes and get control over your fitness plan before the bulk of the holidays set in. Once you’re in an established routine, battling the holidays won’t seem as tough. You’ll also feel infinitely more confident come January when you’re already feeling like a rockstar and you can help motivate the “newbies” with resolutions.

It’s all about balance. Last year, I managed to lose weight over the holidays and I plan to make this year just as successful. Balancing real life with maintaining a healthy lifestyle is hard – and definitely more of a challenge when faced with all the temptations of the holidays. The best advice I can give anyone is to not wait until the first of the year to get control of your diet. The holidays are jammed full of impromptu happy hours, reunions with out-of-town friends and celebrating with friends and family. Feeling in control of your diet now will give you confidence to make healthy choices when faced with spur of the moment events. Throwing caution to the wind during the holidays doesn’t change the fact that you’re still overeating and not compensating with exercise. Your body will know the difference, even if you choose not to mentally acknowledge it. Make a decision to be actively engaged with your food and exercise choices this year, and you won’t be looking at the scale in horror come January.

10?’s with Rick Schaefer of Brock Masterson’s Catering

November 13, 2013 By Lisa Grigsby Leave a Comment

284144_1872989506739_274657_nThere’s rarely a festival in Dayton where you don’t find Brock Masterson’s hawking their “Down East” Blue Lump Crab Cakes, “Fatty” Reuben, Grilled Salmon  and Brock’s Legendary 3-Potato Hash.  There’s always a line, yet the food is so good it’s worth the wait. Brock Masterson’s Catering was founded in 1986 by Chef Rick Schaefer, and while catering is his main business, Brock Masterson’s can be found grilling out at over 20 festivals throughout Dayton region. But now you can also find Brock Masterson’s in your grocery store.  “Customers have been asking for years about the special blend of spices that we use to season our grilled meats, so bottling the spices for the customers just made sense,” said Rick Schaefer, Owner & Executive Chef of Brock Masterson’s.

Brock’s Dust, cooking & grilling spices come in four varieties:  Brock’s

4367122

Dust for Poultry, Beef, Seafood and Pork.  Each one is specifically formulated to enhance that type of meat.  Chef Rick suggests sprinkling the meat liberally before cooking, grilling or broiling, and then sprinkle Brock’s Dust again immediately before serving.

Brock’s Dust is available locally at all 3 Dorothy Lane Market locations, both Dot’sMarket locations, through our website www.brockmastersons.com or by visiting our booth at an upcoming festival.

And while we were talking with Rick about his new spice line, we insisted he do  10 question interview:

What is your favorite ingredient to cook with?

Butter, it just makes everything taste better and it’s God’s gift to the culinary universe.

1478_470331306335239_127566160_n

The Big Fatty- Brock’s reuben Puff Pastry, it’s a pain to work with.

 What ingredient do you dread?
Puff Pastry, it’s a pain to work with.

What’s your favorite dish to make?

Parmesan encrusted Sea Bass with Buerre Blanc Sauce

What’s your favorite pig out food?

 Cheese Burgers of any kind.

What restaurant, other than your own do you like to dine at in the Miami Valley?

I make it a point to seek out and dine at local restaurants.  Some of my favorites:  Golden Nugget for breakfast, Amar India or Ajanta for lunch, and The Oakwood Club for dinner.

What’s your best advice for home chefs?

Recipes are over-rated, unless baking where exact measurements are critical; don’t be afraid to add your favorite spice or ingredient to make the dish your own.  Plus, always have fun, some of our best dishes we serve were originally “failed science experiments”.  Invite friends and family over to share your culinary creations; this is the perfect time for bonding.  Food is the tie that binds and instills comradery among family.

If you could invite any 4 guests to a dinner party who would they be and why?

Well, at a fantasy table where we could intelligently discuss music, science, religion and social issues:  I would invite: Albert Einstein, Mother Teresa, John Lennon, and Carl Sagan.  The reality is that I would give almost anything to just have one more meal with my 4 grandparents.  Some of my very best childhood memories were making and eating holiday meals with my grandparents.

Who do you look up to in the industry and why?37057_10150833109023717_898274413_n

There are just too many to name, but I do have the utmost respect for anyone who can open a local restaurant/business and go through the daily grind of making it succeed.

What do you do in the Miami Valley on a day off?

Day off, what’s that?!? Just kidding.  I love to drive, go for walks/bike rides on the local bike trails, eat out at local restaurants, and because it’s open 24 hours a day, I do find time to sneak away to the Horseshoe Casino to play Baccarat or throw some dice.

Share a kitchen disaster, lucky break or other interesting story:

Lucky Break:  I have the very best employees and the greatest staff in Dayton and I love them all.

Disaster:  Well, we were at a client’s home, and something almost too horrifying to mention happened.  I went to the bathroom, just #1, I swear, flushed and much to my horror, the water started rising.  I reached down below the toilet to turn off the water valve, but this was an older home and there was no shut-off valve.  There was no plunger, coat hanger, nothing.  As the water started spilling over the lid, the most horrifying thoughts were running through my head since the hosts were entertaining just a few feet away in the dining room.  I grabbed the only thing I could, the host’s elegant, embroidered towels and sopped up the mess.  I peeked around the bathroom door and flagged down one of my staff members.  She thought it was strange that I wanted to see her in the bathroom, she walked over, peeked inside, looked up at me with wide eyes and ran to get paper towels and a trash bag.  We cleaned up everything and threw the mess into the trash bag.  Somehow in the midst of cleaning up we got the giggles and could not stop laughing.  We were bent over laughing so hard at how ridiculous the situation was.  I looked at my employee and told her we had to find the washing machine and pronto.  While the guests continued eating, unaware of the scene in the nearby bathroom; I quickly threw the towels into the washing machine.  Once they were cleaned and dried, I hung them back up in the bathroom.  A gentleman had been in the bathroom right before I was and I blame this entirely horrifying situation on him.

Art in the City- A Senior Art Student Celebration of Space

November 12, 2013 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

3qgi3zd25l3jt9q85p58rfpgn6worhojA group of University of Dayton Fine Arts majors will be exhibiting their artwork at the Mike Elsass Gallery on Front Street Friday, November 15, 2013 thru November 22. With the assistance of their department Chair Judith Huacuja, these current UD senior painters worked collectively to organize the show entitled “Art in the City – A Senior Art Student Celebration of Space.” All the students are scheduled to graduate May 2014.

An opening reception is scheduled for Friday, November 15, 2013, 6 – 9 pm. with a brief program by the students at 6:30 p.m. including an interactive discussion with visitors. The public is invited to attend this reception and also participate in the Fall Into Art event, which will be taking place at the Front Street venue during this time.

Local painter and community philanthropist Mike Elsass has donated the use of his recently completed Front Street Galley to support the students and has assisted with technical and artistic advice. Mr. Elsass’ support of young artists includes providing internships and marketing assistance as they begin their careers.

Local community art supporters have joined the effort as “guest curators” to further assist the efforts of these students. Jim Dicke, II of New Bremen, well known in our community as a philanthropist and an artist is one of those supporters. “It is exciting to have these students embrace the community where they are pursuing their education. They’ve taken the initiative to share their talent with the greater Dayton area, enriching the lives of everyone around them.” he said.

According to student Abby Maurer, their work has an amazing range of styles from hyperrealism to free-form abstraction, all of which will be of interest to visitors to the gallery.

“Morrison elementary students bring hundreds of cards to Dayton Children’s Hospital as part of Shoes4theShoeless “Kindness Matters” campaign!”

Together, individuals and communities across the region create Greater Dayton. And through working together, we are a greater Dayton. It’s simple. It’s true. And now, that spirit of volunteerism – those people who make Dayton greater – get a moment in the limelight. The Dayton Foundation invites individuals and groups to connect right now through their newest social media campaign.

Last month, The Dayton Foundation launched the “Together we are Greater…Dayton” social media campaign on the Foundation’s Facebook and Twitter accounts to increase engagement and dialogue with fans about the philanthropic and leadership efforts happening in the Dayton Region.

Chris and CP Mentee

“I truly believe in the mission of the College Promise program in helping to give students from lower income families the same opportunities as other kids. My College Promise mentee is such a beautiful and kind young lady. I’m so proud to be helping to lead her to her dreams of an education and a bright and promising future. #Togetherwearegreater…Dayton”

The campaign encourages Dayton-area residents to show how they are making Dayton greater. Fans on the Foundation’s social media pages were asked to share photos and short stories about how their volunteer activities or charitable support is helping to make a difference in the community. Photos get uploaded to the Foundation’s “Together we are Greater…Dayton” Tumblr account.

The Dayton Region has a long history of individuals helping others in times of need. It is this passion and commitment of everyone working and participating together that helps make Greater Dayton great. This was celebrated at The Dayton Foundation’s annual meeting November 6 with highlights demonstrating the camaraderie of donors, not-for-profits, volunteer and the community.

GET INVOLVED: The campaign concludes this Thursday on November 14, 2013.  So, hurry up and snap an action shot or submit a photo and tell The Dayton Foundation (and the wider community) what’s happening to make Dayton GREATER.

Welcoming More Brew Goodness To Our Community – Eudora Brewing Company

November 11, 2013 By Brian Petro 1 Comment

Eudora Brewing Company Logo

Welcome to the community Eudora Brewing!

Eudora, a nymph from Greek mythology, is a bringer of water. She is part of a larger group called the Hyades, daughters of Atlas and nicknamed “the Rainy ones”. Their brother, Hyas, was killed in a hunting accident, and their tears became the rain. They were afterwards turned into a cluster of stars that we can still see in the head of Taurus, also called the Hyades. The water that they bring is one of the four critical ingredients in beer, along with yeast, hops, and barley. The owner and head brewer of the soon-to-open Eudora Brewing Company, Neil Chabut, knows the importance of water to the brewing process, and has integrated water awareness, and a few other surprises, into the fabric of the business.

Neil has been brewing his own beer for over three years, but it was not until about a year ago that he started considering starting his own brewery. He did his research, working at Brewtensils and learning the craft there while speaking to other breweries in the area. He also spoke to many of the other developing breweries in the area, learning about the business side of it and elements he needed to consider as he was going to go into business for himself.

The building itself, located at 4716 Wilmington Pike in Kettering, is very intimate. The brewing vats are in clear view from wherever you are sitting in the room. The brewery offers its five beers that they brew on site, as well as some seasonal beers that will be developed as the business moves forward. The beers they are initially offering are their year round beers:

  • Sundowner Blonde: This is a very refreshing, lightly flavored beer. It has a hint of summer mixed into the caramel undertones.
  • Boomerang IPA:  This National Homebrew Competition finalist beer has all the hops you could possibly want, and then some. The hoppiness hides some other nice spice notes, offering a great flavor even if you do not like aggressive IPAs.
  • Bee’s Knees Honey APA: A balance between the Blonde and the IPA. The honey adds a light sweetness, and the hops in the pale ale add some bite. A delightful beer from start to finish.
  • Mother Fuggle Brown Ale: A tasty, well roasted brown ale. It has a combination of nutty, chocolately, and roasted flavors that make this a complex and flavorful ale.
  • Tunderball Oatmeal Stout: Deep, dark, roasted, smooth excellence. Oatmeal adds some thickness, and the dark chocolate flavor does the rest.
Fight of beers on a wood block

A little something for everyone…which will you try first?

They sell flights of the beers they have on tap, as well as growlers so you can take home your favorites. They are currently working on the ability to offer customers the opportunity to brew their own Eudora beer recipes in five to ten gallon batches. It is still a few months away, but Neil  is looking forward to offering some hands on learning AND the chance to take home and enjoy beer you created! The initial food offering is going to be light snacks and hot dogs, but Neil is looking to partner with local food trucks while working on building out their kitchen offerings.

Helping local brewers and looking to work with local businesses are not the only ways Eudora is looking to give back to the community. They are also a partner with charity:water, an organization that is working hard to bring clean water to the ends of the earth.Three percent of all profits at Eudora will be  going to this charity, and they use all of that money to fund their efforts. Neil knows that water is the biggest ingredient in beer, and that they can make sure some of the beer we enjoy brings water to people that need it.

The Eudora Brewing Company is looking to become another of the big stars in the Dayton brewing scene. Their pro-community attitude and warm atmosphere are going to go a long way to making this a great place to stop for a beer in Kettering. The real draw is going to be the incredible beers Eudora Brewing Company will be creating. Neil has already proven he can make beers that earn national recognition. Starting at the grand opening on November 15th and 16th, from 4 to 11 PM, Dayton is going to get an incredible taste of what one person can do with all the water the Hyades are raining down on us. Go out and welcome them!

Eudora also supports charity:water, helping people get drinkable water.

‘Oklahoma!’ Review – Wright State University – Sound Territory

November 9, 2013 By Russell Florence, Jr. Leave a Comment

Oklahoma!

Kate Mueller and Jon Hacker in “Oklahoma!” (Contributed photo)

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s quintessential 1943 musical “Oklahoma!” thoroughly entertains at Wright State University with an impressive balance of lighthearted exuberance and darkly disturbing menace.
This splendidly tuneful musical is often treated with a one-dimensional, overly optimistic slant, but director Greg Hellems, borrowing a page from Trevor Nunn’s masterfully character-driven 2002 Broadway revival of “Oklahoma!,” avoids pigeonholing the colorful yet flawed characters. Deception, longing and despair also factor into their evolution as they anticipate statehood not long after the dawn of the 20th century. Thankfully, Hellems’ fine cast, attractively clothed in period attire by Lisa Loen, creates three-dimensional characterizations radiating with authenticity and purpose.
Based on Lynn Riggs’ 1930 play “Green Grow the Lilacs,” “Oklahoma!” concerns the emotionally stubborn romance between farm girl Laurey Williams and cowboy Curly McLain. Laurey and Curly are practically made for each other, but they’re reticent to admit it. However, their relationship is put to the test when surly hired hand Jud Fry sets his eyes on Laurey.
Pleasant tenor Jon Hacker, notably featured last season as Henry in the Human Race Theatre Company and Victoria Theatre Association’s local premiere of “Next to Normal,” portrays Curly with charming bravado and a genuine zest for life. He also instills an appealing sense of security into the role, giving credence to Laurey’s need to view Curly as a protector. Kate Mueller, who delivered a breakthrough performance last season as Helen Keller in WSU’s “The Miracle Worker,” delightfully embraces Laurey’s tomboy sensibilities and has palpable chemistry with Hacker. The score doesn’t rest comfortably in her range (which particularly reduces the passion within “People Will Say We’re in Love”), but she’s great in the book scenes, especially the eye-opening moment Laurey reveals her desires in life. An outstanding Andrew Quiett, whose WSU credits include “Grand Hotel,” “The Miracle Worker” and “Spring Awakening,” completes the central love triangle with a deeply obsessive and intimidating portrayal of the pornography-addicted Jud. I’ve never seen a rancher look as clean as Quiett does here, but he’s absolutely grounded in his complex role adding bouts of frightening anger for good measure. In fact, his superbly compelling rendition of “Lonely Room,” a marvelously ominous ballad and one of the most underrated tunes in the R&H canon, is a truly chilling display heightened by a sky of flaming red courtesy of lighting designer Matthew P. Benjamin.
Excellent turns extend to Caroline Gruber (a caring, strong Aunt Eller), Cooper Taggard (a spirited triple threat who turns the jubilant “Kansas City” into an early winner as dim-witted Will Parker), Kaitlyn Sage (an adorable, hilarious Ado Annie particularly delivering “I Cain’t Say No” as if it were written for her), Sean Jones (sly and funny as Ali Hakim), Drew Bowen (a naturally folksy Cord Elam), Ian Benjamin (enjoyably firm as Andrew Carnes), and Bailey Rose (scoring appropriate laughs as Gertie Cummings). The iconic “Dream Ballet,” strikingly choreographed by Teressa Wyle McWiliams, features fluid partnering by Hannah Aicholtz and Kyle Adam.
In addition to the “Dream Ballet,” McWilliams, paying homage to original choreographer Agnes de Mille while retaining her own distinct vision, pulls out the stops with the aforementioned “Kansas City” (featuring a dance break that would make Kathleen Marshall and Susan Stroman proud) and a wonderfully lively “Farmer and the Cowman.” In an inspired move, scenic designer Pam Knauert Lavarnway primarily sets the show within a large barn, allowing various locales to be viewed with a new perspective. Musical director Scot Woolley conducts another terrific orchestra.

“Oklahoma!” continues through Nov. 10 in the Festival Playhouse of the Creative Arts Center at Wright State University, 3640 Col Glenn Hwy., Fairborn. Performances are tonight at 8 p.m. and tomorrow at 2 p.m. The production is performed in three hours with one 15-minute intermission. Tickets are $22 for adults and $20 for seniors and students. The remainder of the run is reportedly sold- out, but call the box office at (937) 775-2500 in the event there is availability.

S.W.O.R.D. To Screen Kurosawa’s Rashomon

November 8, 2013 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

936full-rashomon-poster1On Saturday Nov. 16th, 2013 at 2 PM, the South West Ohio Recreation and Defense School (S.W.O.R.D) will present the acclaimed film Rashomon by acclaimed film maker Akira Kurosawa.  This 1950 movie introduced the world to Japanese Cinema and won film awards around the globe.

Rashomon concerns various viewpoints of what happened when a samurai is killed and his wife gets raped by a bandit during Japan’s feudal period.  The story is told from the viewpoint of the bandit (played by the great Toshiro Mifune),  a woodcutter, a priest, a constable, the wife and even from the point of view of the dead samurai husband as his spirit speaks through a medium.

Through out the entertaining story, Kurosawa explores the idea of subjective truth.

Rashomon made international stars of out Toshiro Mifune (known as the John Wayne of Japan), Takashi Shimura (known as the Lawrence Olivier of Japan) and Kurosawa, himself.

There will also be a discussion by Film Historian Richard Martin about the history behind the film. Admission to the event is $10 and popcorn and soda are provided. Other refreshments are available for purchase.

2013 marks the 70th anniversary of the first film solely directed by Akira Kurosawa, arguably the greatest film director ever according to many film critics’ lists.

Each month another film by Akira Kurosawa will be shown at S.W.O.R.D.  This screening, and all other films, will also present a lecture by film historian Rick Martin.

Akira Kurosawa was the first Japanese film director to have his movies win major international awards outside of Japan following World War II.  His movies broke new grounds in terms of visuals and storytelling and helped bridge the cultural divide between East and West.  Many of his movies have been remade as westerns such as The Magnificent 7 and even science fiction such as Star Wars which was an outer space retelling of 1958’s The Hidden Fortress.  In 1989, Kurosawa won a Lifetime Achievement Academy Award and the Director’s Guild of America.  In 1999, posthumously, he won the Asian of the Century Award from CNN.

This continuing event will mark the first time in the Dayton area that all of Kurosawa’s films will be screened in order for the public.  Each monthly screening will be on the third Saturday of each month at 2 PM.   Upcoming screenings will include The 7 Samurai, Ikiru, Yojimbo, Do Desu Ka Den, Kagemusha and RAN.

For more information, please call S.W.O.R.D. at 937-223-5569 or look up S.W.O.R.D. on Facebook.

‘Fiddler on the Roof’ Review – Human Race Theatre Company – Tradition in Transition ** Ticket Contest**

November 8, 2013 By Russell Florence, Jr. 20 Comments

HRTC-Fiddler

Drew Pulver as Tevye in “Fiddler on the Roof” (

The Human Race Theatre Company’s refreshingly intimate take on Joseph Stein, Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick’s timeless 1964 musical “Fiddler on the Roof” is an enormously pleasant experience inside its cozy Loft Theatre.

Director Kevin Moore deftly and breezily swaps the sweeping heft typically associated with the material for a smaller, character-conscious approach ripe with immediacy and emotional resonance. His communal, campfire-esque concept, carried out by an excellently cohesive cast of 25 including four musicians who double in smaller roles, unquestionably allows the audience to feel as if they’re right in the heart of the tiny village of Anatevka circa 1905. In fact, when one resident wistfully sung about his quaint surroundings while seated in the aisle next to me, I nearly joined in. After all, by that point, this faith-based community grounded in tradition yet rocked by unexpected transition became so relatable that genuine concern for their future well-being was inescapable. But that’s what makes “Fiddler” so special and practically bulletproof as one of the best musicals ever created. You absolutely care about the characters, specifically as stakes are raised in the darker Act 2 marvelously contrasting the sunny prologue bursting with promise, purpose and possibility.

Drew Pulver is a wonderfully earthy, credibly conflicted everyman in the plum role of poor milkman Tevye, the amiable father of five daughters and the popular glue that holds Anatevka (and this musical) together. As Tevye copes with a whirlwind of change and treasures his chit-chats with God, Pulver’s easygoing, mildly contemporary persona and outstanding vocals (“If I Were a Rich Man” doesn’t disappoint) propel his multifaceted characterization. Still, the volatile anger he displays when Tevye dismisses his daughter Chava for wanting to marry outside the faith is a significant revelation. Chills arise as Tevye is suddenly caught in an utterly disgusted, nearly abusive frame of mind unlike any production of “Fiddler” I have seen, including Canada’s Stratford Festival three months ago. The dynamic Rachel Coloff, who appeared in David Leveaux’s mammoth 2004 Broadway revival of “Fiddler,” shines with great sternness and sharp timing as Tevye’s headstrong wife Golde. Coloff is particularly appealing in the loving, temperamental rapport she establishes with Pulver beautifully highlighted in their poignant rendition of “Do You Love Me?”
Christine Zavakos (Tzeitel), Charity Farrell (Hodel), Ashley Campana (Chava), Abby E. Cates (Shprintze) and Hannah Sayer and Jordan Vandersluis (sharing the role of Bielke) are delightful as Tevye and Golde’s children. The sweet, gentle Zavakos, the radiant, vocally stunning Farrell and the intriguing, introverted Campana enjoyably join forces early in the tale for a fun, graceful “Matchmaker, Matchmaker” that typifies their close-knit sisterhood. This winning trio also has engaging partners in Drew Helton, Josh Kenney and Adam Brown, respectively. Helton, a recent Wright State University graduate possessing geeky charm and finding delicious nuances in the script as timid tailor Motel, notably delivers a bubbly, lyric-fueled “Miracle of Miracles” simultaneously warming the heart of Zavakos and the audience. Kenney, a real find as outspoken student Perchik, is fittingly intellectual and fiery while perfectly matched with Farrell. As Fyedka, Brown’s charisma and skillful dancing is a joy.

HRTC-Fiddler-7

Colorfully authentic, fully realized performances are also given by Caitlin Larsen (Yente/Grandma Tzeitel), Saul Caplan (Lazar Wolf), K.L. Storer (Rabbi), Matty Rickard (Mendel), Ryan Heinrich (Mordcha), Eric Byrd (Vanya), Joshua Silver Hughes (Yussel), Adam Lendermon (Sasha), Jeff Sams (Constable), and Linda June Snyder (Shaindel). Larsen’s comedic expertise, Caplan’s joviality, Sams’ cool, imposing demeanor, and Rickard, Byrd, Hughes and Lendermon’s splendid execution of the iconic “Bottle Dance” (one of many crisp, spirited routines marvelously reproduced by Chris Crowthers from Jerome Robbins’ original choreography) are noteworthy.
The production’s superb ambience is heightened by Dick Block’s strikingly detailed set evoking religion, John Rensel’s proficient lighting expertly marking shifts in tone, Tony Ray Hicks’ attractive costumes (originally designed for a 2009 “Fiddler” national tour starring Topol), Nathan D. Dean’s first-rate sound design (“Tevye’s Dream,” featuring Campana as the eerie Fruma-Sarah, is a spooky delight), and music director/guitarist Jay Brunner’s (Nachum) terrific klezmer band (particularly giving Farrell’s gorgeous rendition of “Far From the Home I Love” a tender acoustic flair) featuring Brent Eresman (Seth/clarinet), Joel Greenberg (Zev/mandolin), and brilliant, expressive violinist George Abud (Fiddler). Janet Yates Vogt provides vocal music direction.

It’s no surprise “Fiddler” has endured for generations. The Human Race keeps the musical’s tuneful, meaningful legacy alive with stripped down potency accenting the fact that it’s never too late to reexamine a classic.

“Fiddler on the Roof” continues through Nov. 30 at the Loft Theatre, 126 N. Main St., Dayton. Performances are Nov. 8-9, Nov. 13-16, Nov. 20-23, Nov. 27, 29-30 at 8 p.m.; Nov. 10, 17, 24 and 30 at 2 p.m.; and Nov. 26 at 7 p.m. The Nov. 12 and 19 performances are sold out. Act One: 95 minutes; Act Two: 50 minutes. Tickets are $21-$45. Harvest Party at Lily’s Bistro

November 7, 2013 By Lisa Grigsby Leave a Comment

1383741_228505223978404_1499545334_nJust in time to help you plan your holiday entertaining, Lily’s  Bistro in the Oregon District is throwing a casual tasting party on Thurs, Nov 14th from 6 -8pm.  Lily’s General Manager Emily Mendenhall says, “this will be a fun, easy going way to try some wines, tasting can sometimes be stuffy, and that’s so nut us.”

They will be featuring six wines paired with six seasonal snacks that will allow you to find the perfect wine to serve at home for your celebrations.  Staff will b on hand to help advise you on what wines will best compliment your holiday menu.  Once you choose your favorites, you’ll even be able to purchase them right there at retail prices.  You’ll want to pick up your ticket in advance, they are $30, and it’s a great excuse to stop by the bistro and treat yourself to lunch, dinner or Sunday brunch!

Here’s a tip from DaytonDining on knowing how much wine to have on hand for your holiday meal:

A safe rule of thumb is to figure that each guest will consume one to two drinks per hour. If you’re focused on wine and not serving cocktails before dinner, assume you’ll need enough for an hour of appetizers before dinner (in case that turkey takes a little time getting up to temperature or Aunt Mary arrives late.) Then consider years past: did dinner last 20 minutes and then everyone went back to the football game? Or did Uncle Bob tell stories for so long that everyone ended up eating third and fourth helpings? Are you day-drinkers (and eaters) or is dinner after sundown?

Multiply the number of hours you plan to entertain times the number of guests times two drinks per guest, and you’ve got the number of glasses of wine you might need. If you’re serving standard 750-mL bottles, it’s safe to assume you’ll get about four glasses per bottle, so divide your glass number by 4 to find out how many bottles you need.

Got that? Guests x hours x 2 = glasses.
Glasses / 4 = bottles.

So if you’re hosting eight people and planning to have a half hour of pre-dinner snacks followed by a dinner that lasts about an hour and a half,  figure 8 people x 2 hours x 2 drinks per hour = 32 glasses / 4 glasses per bottle = 8 bottles.
