Wear Flip Flops, Get A Free Smoothie & Give Back

June 20, 2014 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

tropicalsmoothieIt’s that time of the year again for National Flip Flop Day, a special day where Tropical Smoothie Café in the Dayton-Springfield area encourages customers to kick off Summer—and their shoes—for free smoothies and a good cause.  Today,  Friday, June 20, customers who stop by any participating Tropical Smoothie Café location nationwide between the hours of 2 pm and 7 pm wearing flip flops will receive a free 24 oz. Jetty Punch Smoothie. During this time, customers can show their support for Camp Sunshine. Customers who purchase a $5 flip flop key fob will be rewarded with a 10 percent discount on all future purchases through the end of the year. Online donations are also accepted at www.nationalflipflopday.com.

This is the eighth consecutive year in which Tropical Smoothie Café is committed to bringing on the sunshine for kids with life-threatening illnesses and their families. The goal this year is to raise more than $600,000 to benefit Camp Sunshine.

“We are proud to support Camp Sunshine and everything the organization stands for,” said Doug Ruggles owner of Tropical Smoothie Cafés in Beavercreek and Fairborn. “Camp Sunshine gives kids with life-threatening illnesses and their families a much-needed break. It’s a chance to leave behind the doctor visits, medical tests and anxious waits for results – if only for a week.”10250324_10152147874517826_3521919959722242397_n

For more than 25 years, Camp Sunshine has offered kids and their families a getaway from the difficulties of their everyday lives. Located on the shores Lake Sebago in Maine, Camp Sunshine is the only nonprofit organization in the nation whose mission is to address the impact of a life-threatening illness on every member of the immediate family. Parents receive support from medical staff and others who can relate to what they are going through first-hand, while kids get to be kids, have fun, and get away from the stresses of everyday life living with their unique disorders.

Families like the Fishershave been going to Camp Sunshine for several years. Their son, Joshua, has been battling Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, a blood cancer in which cancer cells penetrate every part of his body, since age 2. The Fishers say, “When your child is very sick, it becomes very lonesome for the child and for the family as it becomes very isolating. Camp Sunshine brings families together that all experience the same thing. It enables our entire family to have so much fun. There are very few places we can go that we can all be together and relax due to the fact there is a physician there and everybody there knows what it means to have a child that is sick. Camp Sunshine has brought so much happiness to our lives, and we are grateful that Tropical Smoothie Café has been so gracious and enabled families like ours to have these fantastic memories.”

The cost of sending one child with a life-threatening illness and their family to this special retreat for a week is $2,000, and Camp Sunshine relies on donations from corporate supporters, like Tropical Smoothie Café, and individual donors to continue to offer its programs free-of-charge.

“Camp Sunshine is a lifeline for so many families, giving them the gift of treasured memories and precious time with the ones they love and others that can relate,” said Ruggles. “With the help of our customers, we hope to send even more families to thtropical smoothieis wonderful camp this year.”

To date, Tropical Smoothie Café has donated more than $2 million to Camp Sunshine, sending 1,000 children and their families to experience the camp. Last year, Tropical Smoothie Café raised a record-breaking $515,000 for Camp Sunshine and the brand plans to exceed that number in 2014 by raising $600,000 which would cover the costs to send 300 families to the camp.

There are seven area cafes, check the Tropical Smoothie Cafe website to find the one nearest you.  Tropical Smoothie Café’s menu boasts bold, flavorful food and smoothies with a healthy appeal, all made to order from the freshest ingredients. We find that superior, simple ingredients including real fruit and veggies set our smoothies apart from the others.

Their toasted wraps, sandwiches, flatbreads and gourmet salads are made fresh with high quality meats and cheeses and topped with fresh produce and flavorful sauces.

Black and White, 94 Minutes, 1964 - Directed by Stanley Kubrick - Starring Peter Sellers, George C. Scott

Can it be 50 years already since the release of this brilliant Kubrick classic, the ultimate black comedy?  This satirical masterpiece is about a psychotic strategic air command officer who takes it upon himself to unleash a nuclear attack on the Soviet Union, which in turn will set in motion the Doomsday Machine that will blow up the planet.  With three show-stopping performances from Sellers and an unexpectedly hilarious turn by Scott, DR. STRANGELOVE is filled with cartoonish, over-the-top characters that, despite the lunacy, still ring true today.  Rated PG.

Groundhog_Day_(movie_poster)

GROUNDHOG DAY - August 22-24

Color, 101 Minutes, 1993 - Screenplay & Direction by Harold Ramis - Starring Bill Murray, Andie MacDowell, Chris Elliott

Our tribute to the comedic genius of Harold Ramis is also one of Bill Murray’s most beloved performances. This perennial and thoughtful comedy is about a bad-attitude weatherman who finds himself living the same day over and over again-until he gets it right. What on the surface is a light-hearted ‘90s comedy shows some amazing depth as we consider what changes and what stays the same. Ramis once said “when you hit it right, those things last.” That certainly rings true with this often underrated gem. Rated PG.

SILK STOCKINGS - August 29-31

Color, 117 Minutes, 1957 -Directed by Rouben Mamoulian - Starring Fred Astaire, Cyd Charisse

Known for her cool sex appeal, Cyd Charisse is one of the premier dancing stars of the ‘40s and’ 50s…but she starts this musical version of Ninotchka as an even cooler Soviet spy who gradually warms up to Astaire’s elegant wooing and French champagne. Their chemistry sizzles, turning into an explosion of talent, sophistication and glamour in Astaire’s last great musical role.  Not Rated.

Cityfolk Festival Reunion: Celebrating Dayton’s Past Concert Event One Last Time

June 20, 2014 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

Cityfolk Festival ReunonTo many around the Dayton area, the three-day Cityfolk Festival was one of the high points of the summertime.  Alongside the extraordinary events that are sprinkled throughout the year, one of the most anticipated to attend was the Cityfolk Festival.  The event was created after the National Folk Festival ended its three-year stay here in town.  The festival brought artists from around the world and would share their diverse artistic traditions.  The performances stressed the importance of building partnerships and engaged collaborations of all ages.  From the early days of being in downtown to setting up at Riverscape-Cityfolk Festival was one of the many bright spots that shined on the Dayton community.

Unfortunately the funding for the festival and other programs that Cityfolk put together suffered due to the low attendances.  One contributing factor was the weather conditions the past couple years.  Some major companies that contributed and sponsored the music stages during the occasion left town.   These factors all came into play when the committee decided to pull the plug on this year’s festival.  It devastated and disappointed a great deal of festival goers.

For Sunni Russo, the Cityfolk Festival was special to her.  Coming from New Jersey and moving here 20-plus years ago, Russo started volunteering at the information booth, and then moved to the musical side of the show.  “They used to record the performances for archiving.  So, my volunteer job was to sit with the sound guy, make sure the tape recorder was going and try to record the name of the songs,” says Russo.  Russo got the position of running the music stages in 2003, a position she would run for the next 11 years.  Russo, like the many that had the opportunity to volunteer and/or be in a higher role, were devastated that Cityfolk folded.

Coordinator Sunni Russo pictured on the right

When Russo got word that Cityfolk was finished, she was talking to one of the other volunteers that she worked closely with made a comment
that would spark an idea.  “One of the guys-Charlie Parker, he worked stage tech over the years, said would it be cool if we just showed up the third week of June on Courthouse Square and  wear our favorite t-shirts and talk about good times.  A little light bulb went off in my head.”  The suggestion of Parker will now become reality on June 22nd.  At the Courthouse Square in downtown Dayton, the Cityfolk Festival Reunion will be taking place from 1-7pm.

Throughout the Cityfolk Festival Reunion, the event will feature musical acts from past and present.  Paige Beller and Danny Voris will be performing while past Cityfolk acts Corndrinkers, Son del Caribe will be returning.  Also joining the musical acts is the Stivers Jazz Combo.  Food vendors Hunger Paynes, Brock Mastersons Catering-Events, El Meson Express, and for dessert Ritters Frozen Custard will be at the festival.  The Zoot Theatre Company will be having a station set up for the children.  The kids will be able to construct finger puppets or get their faces painted. Also set up for the children will be the “Community Canvas”-canvases will be set up for them to paint whatever strikes them at that moment.  If you want to bring your own cooler, Russo mentioned that they will be permitted.  For the attendees, it’s encouraged to bring your own seating.

Cityfolk Festival Reunion is shaping up  to be an extraordinary day for people to celebrate and embrace the good times that the original Cityfolk Festival brought so many years.  Russo mentioned that there are some talk of possible having the reunion return next year, but for now she just wants folks to enjoy this year’s occasion.  “The whole goal is for everyone to come and have a good time.”

Yaffa Grill: Our New Favorite Spot

June 19, 2014 By Dayton937 1 Comment

Marinated Chicken on the Yaffa Grill

If Fred Flintstone  was on Colonel Glenn Highway, he would say “Yaffa Gotta Do !” …and guess what, he would be right.

Yaffa Grill can be summed up as “simply exotic.”   It has worldly tastes of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisine that are as authentic as they are delicious.  At the same time they serve the food on paper or styrofoam plates.  You see?  Simple and exotic.  Food Adventures have tagged this as our new favorite eatery, and have been visiting the 2 Yaffa locations with some frequency.

Want an authentic, unique Food Adventure that is affordable and fun?  Then look no further than Yaffa Grill.

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— They have two locations, one at 2844 Colonel Glenn Hwy (across from Wright State), and the other at 21 Alex Rd in West Carrollton which features a Middle Eastern Market.  A local family from Palestine, owns both businesses.

— The food is Middle Eastern/ Mediterranean.  It is unique and exotic, but delicious!  You will see spindles of meat and flaming shish kebabs.  Yaffa Grill is a great place to experiment and try some new dishes out of your comfort zone.  You will be happy you did!

— The prices are right.  The most expensive thing on the menu is a whole grilled chicken for $15, and we know you cant eat that by yourself.

Click to enlarge this incredible appetizer called “Musabaha” which is much like hummus

— Very casual atmosphere.  The dining area is almost like a “to go” deli.  Warning: the drink selection is very limited  (cans of pop and bottled water).

Don’t know what to order or where to start on such a diverse menu with possibly unfamiliar choices?  No problem, The Big Ragu, Chef House and Hungry Jax have a list of “must eats” that wont disappoint you.  There are various spellings out there of the dishes below, but we will use the spellings on the Yaffa menu.

MUST EATS:

—MUSABAHA : The hardest thing about ordering it, is pronouncing it.  It is a crushed chickpea puree, much like a hummus, with olive oil, lemon juice and spices mixed in.  One of our favorite appetizers for sure.  Dipping the pita bread served into this appetizer is one of life’s golden pleasures.

—EGGPLANT SALAD:  The Big Ragu has seen his fair share of eggplant dishes.  This was one of the most unique and delicious ones we have come across.  Served cold, it is perfectly mixed with roasted peppers, tomatoes and vegetables.  Excellent pairing with the pita bread, it is a meal in itself.

— YAFFA MIX GRILL: A sampling of 3 of the best shish kebabs in Dayton.  The plate consists of a chicken shish kebab, steak kebab, and a beef/lamb mixed kebab.  It is fun to watch the cooks prepare the kebabs on the huge skewers, over the open flame.  We loved this dish.  The grilled meat and vegetables make it a heart healthy choice.

Kufta Kebabs. Get the Mixed Grill and sample all 3 types of Kebabs

— THE HALF GRILLED CHICKEN:  We don’t know how, but Yaffa Grill made a delicious chicken like we have never tasted before.  The Mediterranean spices were marinated and infused into the chicken in some sort of delicious sauce/rub.  The result was a lip smacking, moist, melt-in-your mouth experience.  A definite ‘must eat.’

— BEEF SHAWERMA:  Flame cooked lamb and beef, sliced from the meat rotesserie.   We especially love dishes that are carved off of rotating spindles of meat.   It is a tasty treat that explodes with flavor.   When served in a wrap, it is a “Food Adventure on the go.”

Honorable Mention:  Fatayer: a delicious bread stuffed with your choice of spices.  Lentil Soup:  Yeah, we never thought we would ever write this, but the lentil soup is amazing.

With so many great choices on the menu, it was hard to limit our ‘must eats.’  Even the “Baba Ghanouj” dip was some of the best we’ve had.  If you like hummus, try it.

Dates, and other produce at Yaffi Market in West Carrollton

Yaffa Grill is a perfect place to experience a new culture and have your very own Food Adventure.  It is a fascinating place for true foodies, and a sampling ground for those with an open mind, who are tired of the “same old thing.”  Vegetarians love this place for the flavorful entrees!  They even have a kids menu with hot dog, burger and chicken nuggets option.

Yaffa Grill does not have a website yet, or a Facebook page, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get some delicious food.  Don’t forget that the West Carrollton location has a market  with various hard to find imported groceries from far away lands.  Canned goods, baked items, meats, nuts and even dairy products line the shelves.  It is definitely worth a visit.

Make sure you get some grub at Yaffa Grill,  The Food Adventure Crew cherish it as one of their favorite places in Dayton.  We are addicted, and we think you will be too.

Here is something you wont see anywhere else online, the Yaffa Grill Menu —> PAGE 1   PAGE2   PAGE3   PAGE 4

Some of our best photos of the year are in the picture gallery below, so make sure you scroll through them to see all of the dishes that Yaffa Grill has to offer.

What’s almost as good as a freshly grilled Yaffa Kebab?   The answer is “liking” Food Adventures on Facebook, by clicking HERE.

‘Million Dollar Quartet’ Review – Victoria Theatre Association – That Old Time Rock & Roll

June 19, 2014 By Russell Florence, Jr. Leave a Comment

There’s a whole lotta shakin’ goin’ on at the Schuster Center as the outstanding national tour of “Million Dollar Quartet,” nominated for the 2010 Tony Award for Best Musical and based on a true event, lets loose with feel-good exuberance courtesy of the Victoria Theatre Association’s Premier Health Broadway Series.

million

A jukebox musical written by Colin Escott and Floyd Mutrux unabashedly concerned with tone and era instead of plot or storyline, “Million Dollar Quartet” captures a glimpse of rock and roll history in 100 breezy minutes under Eric Schaeffer’s crisp direction. On Dec. 4, 1956 in Memphis, Tennessee, Sun Records owner Sam Phillips concocted a jam session featuring four titans he discovered: Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley. This immensely talented and unique quartet, whose genuine love of music permeated within their souls, come together at the dawn of their careers, which gives the material an immediately endearing edge beyond the cavalcade of hits. Humorous clashes (primarily instigated by the outspoken Lewis) and interesting tidbits (televangelist Jimmy Swaggart is Lewis’ cousin; Perkins resented Presley for snatching “Blue Suede Shoes,” a hit he wrote and recorded first) keep the action engaging when the fantastic music subsides, but a deeper investigation into the lives and personalities of each artist, including Phillips, would have added considerable substance. Granted, Cash and Perkins provide a relatively juicy slice of drama when revealing their decision to move on from Sun Records, but stakes should have been raised elsewhere. Also, the presence of a random girlfriend for Presley, intended to boost the show’s sex appeal, is particularly superfluous and underwritten.

Nonetheless, this rip-roaring experience thrives on its thoroughly energetic and entertaining foursome who impressively play their own instruments while marvelously embodying the titular legends. Phenomenal pianist John Countryman is a funny firecracker as Lewis, a fiery Southerner longing to write his first hit. Countryman brings incredible passion to “Real Wild Child” and “Great Balls of Fire.” The suave Tyler K. Hunter effortlessly channels the hip-swiveling Presley in “That’s All Right” and “Hound Dog,” but wonderful sensitivity also abounds as he terrifically leads “Memories Are Made of This” and “Peace in the Valley.” As the plain-spoken Perkins, H. Bradley Waters provides satisfying versions of “Who Do You Love?” and “See You Later Alligator.” Scott Moreau is also perfectly cast as the understated Cash, pleasing audiences with toe-tapping renditions of “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Sixteen Tons” and “I Walk the Line.” Vince Nappo brings folksy joy to his portrayal of Phillips, the show’s narrator. As Presley’s current flame Dyanne, Kelly Lamont, who originated the role, seductively captivates in “Fever.” Bass player Corey Kaiser and drummer Patrick Morrow provide first-rate accompaniment.

“Million Dollar Quartet” only scratches the surface of Cash, Lewis, Perkins, Phillips and Presley’s greatness, but it’s an undeniable crowd pleaser just as winning on tour as it was on Broadway.

“Million Dollar Quartet” continues through June 22 at the Schuster Center, Second and Main Streets, Dayton. Performances are today and Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 2 and 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 and 7:30 p.m. The production is performed in 100 minutes without intermission. Tickets are $40-$96. FED UP and SUPERMENSCH Open Friday at THE NEON!

June 18, 2014 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

supermensch-the-legend-of-shep-gordon-187783-poster-xlarge-resizedHello Everyone,

Once again, we’re holding onto BELLE and CHEF this week, but we’re also going to start two new documentaries. FED UP is one that several of you have been asking about…and it’s currently only slated to play for one week (one screening per day). Hurry down if you need to see it! In addition, we will play a documentary that many of you have seen advertised before our current two hits – SUPERMENSCH: THE LEGEND OF SHEP GORDON, directed by Mike Myers (you may have seen Shep Gordon on CBS Sunday Morning a couple weeks ago or even on David Letterman last night).

Synopsis for FED UP: “Far more of us get sick from what we eat than anyone has ever realized. This potent expose uncovers the food industry’s dirty secrets. This exploration reveals how, in the wake of media attention, public fascination with appearance and government policies pushing for change, generations of Americans will live shorter lives.” “For the past 30 years, everything we thought we knew about food and exercise is dead wrong. FED UP is the film the food industry doesn’t want you to see. From Katie Couric, Laurie David (Oscar winning producer of AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH) and director Stephanie Soechtig, FED UP will change the way you eat forever.” (taken from RADiUS-TWC) Click on this LINK to visit the film’s official site.

Synopsis for SUPERMENSCH: THE LEGEND OF SHEP GORDON: “Shep Gordon is the consummate Hollywood insider. Though he isn’t a household name, Gordon has become a beacon in the industry, beloved by the countless stars he has encountered throughout his storied career. Shep is known for managing the careers of Alice Cooper as well as stints with Blondie, Luther Vandross and Raquel Welch, among others – a career that began with a chance encounter in 1968 with Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix. He even found time to invent the “Celebrity Chef.” Though the chef as star is part of the culture now, it took Shep’s imagination, and his moral outrage at how the chefs were being treated, to monetize the culinary arts into the multi-billion dollar industry it is today. Personal friends with the Dalai Lama through his philanthropic endeavors with the Tibet Fund and the guardian of four children, Gordon’s unlikely story will be told by those who know him best, his pals, including Alice Cooper, Michael Douglas, Sylvester Stallone, Anne Murray, Willie Nelson, Emeril Lagasse and more.” (RADiUS-TWC) Click on this LINK to visit the film’s official facebook page.

Don’t forget about Start Freedom Dayton’s screening of TRICKED on Thursday evening at 7:30. More details can be found on our website – www.neomovies.com.

The Montgomery County Food Policy Coalition is hosting a screening of FOOD PATRIOTS this Saturday, June 21 at 3:00. “Touched by their teenage son’s battle with a foodborne superbug, filmmakers Jeff & Jennifer Spitz document their family’s struggle to raise backyard chickens, grow food, and transform into Food Patriots. FOOD PATRIOTS features people from all walks of life who are trying to change the way Americans eat and buy food, and educate the next generation of consumers.” Admission is free and open to the public – to save a spot, please RSVP to Emily Bradford at (937)225-6470 or [email protected]

On Wednesday, June 25 at 7:30, THE NEON is happy to host a one-night screening of the new documentary TO BE TAKEI. This is part of Dayton PRIDE’s month-long LGBT Pride celebration. “Over seven decades, actor and activist George Takei boldly journeyed from a WWII internment camp, to the helm of the starship Enterprise, to the daily news feeds of five million Facebook fans. Join George and his husband Brad on this star’s playful and profound trek for life, liberty, and love. Best known for playing Sulu on the original Star Trek TV series and six movies that followed, George Takei is unlikely social media royalty. Unofficially dubbed the King of Facebook, he counts over 5 million fans in his online empire – including Trekkies, Howard Stern listeners, and the LGBTQ community – who devour his quirky mix of kitten jokes, Star Trek references, heartfelt messages, and sci-fi/fantasy memes…” (taken from press notes) Tickets, just $8 each, are now available at our box office.

On Thursday, June 26 at 7:30, we will host a preview screening of the new short film FOR FRANCIS. “When Matt Flynn (David Beck) discovers that his son Francis’s second grade teacher Ms. Walker (Kathy Patterson) gave his son a dress to wear, Matt becomes enraged and confronts the school. This very special preview screening on June 26th is in large part for donors in the Dayton area who contributed to the FOR FRANCIS fundraising campaign last fall. The film has already captured the attention of many prominent figures in the entertainment industry, including Emmy Award Winner Tim Gunn, who is one of the film’s Executive Producers. The character of ‘Ms. Walker’ in FOR FRANCIS is inspired by David Beck’s junior high English teacher, Denise Walker, of St. Charles School, in Kettering, Ohio. Although a work of fiction, the story of FOR FRANCIS is inspired by the real life Mrs. Walker’s positive influence on David’s life. Please RSVP to [email protected] for free tickets. Donations are welcome, and walk-ins will be accepted for $7. The donations will be used to help cover the cost of theater rentals and festival submissions.” (taken from Press Notes)

Ryan Benner will premiere the 4th installment in the SAVOR THE FLAVOR series (locally produced roller-blading videos) on Saturday, June 28 at 10pm. Ticket, $5 each, are available now at THE NEON’s box office. “Featuring blading from: Aaron Pyle, Tri Tri-Rudolf, Reed Huston, Andrew Thompson, Dan Mikesell,Alex Papalios & Ryan Benner.” In addition, Benner will also screen Hawke Trackler’s CRUISIN’ 4 A BRUISIN’ – featuring Kyle Wood, Ben Poling, Stefan Brandow, Jimmy Spetz, Matt Lyon, Jesse Soda, Hawke Trackler, Greg Preston, Cody Reffner & Bradley Wilson.” (taken from Benner’s Press Notes)

Things aren’t looking good for the potential screening of STAND CLEAR OF THE CLOSING DOORS – tentatively set for Sunday, June 29 at 5:15…only 5 tickets have been reserved. If 50 tickets aren’t reserved by this Friday, the screening will not move forward. If you want to see this film screen at THE NEON, click this official LINK to reserve your ticket…and please help spread the word. “STAND CLEAR OF THE CLOSING DOORS tells the story of Ricky, a 13-year old boy with Asperger’s Syndrome who gets lost one day in the New York City subway system. While his mother frantically searches for him above ground, the sensory-sensitive Ricky is exposed to the cacophony, eccentricity, and menace found in New York’s underground (including some scenes shot during Hurricane Sandy, which came to figure into the film’s story), resulting in a truly authentic view into both the wonders and the horrors of what lies below.”

I’m so glad to announce that we have added IDA to our “Coming Soon” list. This little gem of a film was one of the best films I saw at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival – right up there with 12 YEARS A SLAVE and PHILOMENA. Next time you’re in, I’ll hope to have trailers running.

Thanks for your continued interest and enthusiastic support.

We hope to see you soon!

Jonathan

Steve Makofka: Life/Music Getting ‘Back To Normal’ In Revealing EP

June 18, 2014 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

Walking up to Fifth Third Field, you will notice the usual fanfare of Dragons shirts, jerseys, hats that people will be proudly displaying  as they enter the ballpark.  There will be the folks walking up and down the sidewalks.  Some with large groups of other individuals.    Some simply walking solo.  The area around Fifth Third Field is starting to really come back to life.  For a period of time, the area  surrounding the minor league stadium was dormant.  What were empty, decaying buildings are now becoming and/or transitioning to  restaurants and shopping centers.  What was the old Buckeye Brass & Iron Foundry in the 30s is now residence to Warped Wing  Brewery, one of the fastest growing breweries around the area.  New luxury apartments are starting to pop up-giving more of an  excuse for people to continue to move closer into the city. Also seeing some new life being up into it is the formally known Canal Street Tavern.  Currently under the name Canal Public House,  the music venue is merely steps away from the ballpark.  When you come down on weekends this summer before the first pitch, you  will find singer/songwriter Steve Makofka playing the piano.

For the past couple of years, Makofka has been also going through some  changes within his life.  During this time, he has become more involved in the music scene and has released his debut EP Back To  Normal. Makofka went in to record Back To Normal in December of 2013 at F.M. Records in Dayton, Ohio.  The recording of the EP only took  an all-day session, Makofka mentioned.  Makofka was able to record the EP so quickly was mostly in part with the band that he  assembled.  Local Dayton musicians guitarist Todd theFox, bassist Chris Barnett, drummer Jay Madewell have all backed Makofka  throughout the open mics around Dayton, including the now departed RnR Playdate.  The group played the songs that are on the EP  during the allotted times during the events.  The familiarity is also the reason that the band was chosen.  “I had to use those musicians  is because I felt like the songs themselves would have suffered without the chemistry…the songs, the music, the style-all grew up together with those people,” Makofka said.

Makofka officially moved to the Dayton area in 2000.  Originally residing in the outskirts of Atlanta, Makofka took a minister position at a church in Centerville.  For 25 years, Makofka followed his passion for ministry after attending Grace College.  For 25 years, Makofka taught and guided others through his instruction and faith.  He would prepare couples for marriage as being their counselor.  He would be involved with events within the congregation.  Over time, however, Makofka decided to step down.  Makofka’s enjoyment of teaching and helping while being in the ministry life led him to go into substitute teaching for a period of time.  Nevertheless, playing music and performing became Makofka’s love.

To some, they view Makofka’s music as his way to continue being able to preach.  To Makofka, he sees it at a different vision.  To him-the simple pleasures of playing and the connecting with people are what really drives his music.

The concept of Makofka’s introspective EP Back To Normal explores and summarizes the past four years of his life.  From working small stints at Kings Island to the housewares department at a retail store during a holiday season to working in a music store influenced the old school country, honky tonk opener “Something Else”.  “Back To Normal Blues” has Makofka coming to the realization that the way life was will not be coming back (I can’t get what I want/And I guess that’s just too bad/If I can’t get what I want I’ve got to learn to want what I have).  “February In Dayton”, the acoustic tune which highlights Makofka’s stellar play on the accordion, talks of the feelings we all experience during the winter season.  Shaun O’Shaugnessy, who was the engineer of the EP, allows Makofka and company the freedom to be raw and unpolished.  Just the way the band played these songs at the open mics around Dayton.  “I wanted to capture that on this album”, Makofka explained.

The road of life hasn’t been the straight and narrow that Steve Makofka thought it would be.  The year’s post-ministry life have thrown him more curveballs than a Major League baseball pitcher tosses at an opposing batter.  However, Makofka has found happiness and joy through his love of making music and performing them to live audiences.

Performing especially to those that will be walking up to the ballpark on those gorgeous summer nights this year.

From Elvis Tribute Shows To Touring Elvis

June 17, 2014 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

It sounds like the beginning of a joke, or some impossible showbiz fairy tale: “Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl photoPerkins walk into a recording studio…”

And yet, on December 4, 1956, at Sun Records in Memphis, it happened, and they jammed on record together for the first and only time. Perkins, riding the success of “Blue Suede Shoes,” was in with his band to cut some new material. Cash, a fellow Sun artist and a fan of Perkins, dropped by to listen. Sun’s owner, Sam Philips (“The Father of Rock and Roll”), added Lewis to Perkins’ session in search of a more rockabilly sound. Presley, with a girlfriend in tow, stopped by to say hello. And then, magic happened.

Before they were famous, it wasn’t unusual for several of these guys to play together at rent parties, in after-hours joints—but this was the only time any such summit was preserved for history.

Million Dollar Quartet, the 2010 Broadway musical that dramatizes this meeting, will rock the Benjamin and Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center starting tonight and running June 17 – 22 as part of Victoria Theatre Association’s Premier Health Broadway Series. A litany of classic hits including “Hound Dog,” “I Walk the Line,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Fever,” and many more are performed with electric gusto by an unbelievably talented cast of actor/musicians playing their own instruments.

The tour cast includes H. Bradley Waters as Carl Perkins, John Countryman as Jerry Lee Lewis (a role that won Levi Kreis a Tony Award), Scott Moreau as Johnny Cash, and Tyler K. Hunter as Elvis Presley.

Hunter, a country singer who began doing Elvis tribute shows in his youth, has been part of the M$Q tour for a year and a half.

“I’ve never done any acting before,” he said, “or anything like that. I do country music, but they called and asked if I wanted to audition, so I took a bus to New York.”

“It’s a blast,” he said of the show’s process. “When we come into rehearsals, our musical director—Eric Schaeffer, a very talented, smart guy who works the ‘theatre’ side of things—tells us to pick up our instruments and start jamming, like a regular band. Then we throw in the dialogue, and there it is. We’re a band. These guys become like your family, like best friends. It’s a really tight bond.”

When the show premiered on Broadway in 2010, New York Magazine called it “a dazzling raucous spectacle that sounds like a million bucks,” but Hunter downplays that, painting a down-home portrait of four scrappy young fellas as regular joes on the cusp of igniting the world.

“You get an idea of who these guys are and where they come from, ‘50s Memphis. These are buddies just coming in and hanging—real guys, you know? No different from you or me or anybody else.”

He uses that approach to inform his portrayal of Elvis, going for an evocation as opposed to an impersonation. Hunter, who does not resemble Elvis offstage, pulls a transformation onstage and presents a stunning take that evokes The King’s presence.

“A wig, some makeup…I dunno,” he said casually. “There are a few guys out there whoreally look like Elvis, but no one’s going to sound exactly like him. I try to do just enough so if you’re sitting back in your seat and catch a glimpse of me, there’s a split second where you think, ‘Wow, that’s Elvis.’ That’s all it takes, that split second. Then they’re on board with you even if you go somewhere they don’t completely expect.”

“You know, we think about Elvis, probably one of the most famous people since Jesus Christ, and we forget that he was a real person. These were all real people. They had their feelings hurt, they laughed, they did all the same things as us—they just had really cool jobs. When I’m up there, I try to capture that aspect. At this point, he’s 21 years old. He’s a kid. You remember how you were at 21? That’s what I try to capture.”

In Million Dollar Quartet, Hunter-as-Elvis performs songs like “Long Tall Sally” and “Peace in the Valley,” but Hunter dreams of singing his own material someday.

Million_Dollar_Quartet

“I’ll always be an Elvis fan, but I would love to do my own thing. I’ve been writing songs for a little while now, and country music is what I grew up on. It comes naturally when I sing. I’m from Nebraska and kind of a redneck, and it’s just who I am. We’ve got some good people coming together to hopefully make a great album of original country music.”

But for now, he knows, The King still reigns.

“I definitely am very grateful and fortunate with the job I have, and the fantastic people I work with. We’re playing live music, which is a blast, and we get to pick up our instruments and play every single day. I really enjoy it, especially the finale. That’s when we get to rock out, just let it all hang out for ten or so minutes.”

Talented musicians jamming together—that’s what Million Dollar Quartet is all about.

“It’s got that raw, bluesy feeling that comes with rockabilly. You get that experience of being a fly on the wall and seeing this really cool moment. It’s not your typical Broadway show. We’re recreating a one-time thing with real people who were just buddies hanging out.”

Performances run from Tuesday, June 17 to Sunday, June 22. Group sales are underway for groups of 20 or more. Groups may call Betty Gould at 937/228-7591 ext. 3074. Tickets start at $25 and are on sale now at Ticket Center Stage, located in the Wintergarden of the Schuster Center, by phone 937-228-3630, toll-free at 888-228-3630 or online at www.ticketcenterstage.com.  For information on the production, visitwww.MillionDollarQuartetLive.com

The Sound Check Chat podcasts with Andrew Low of The Jazz June and Christopher Wright of C. Wright’s Parlour Tricks went live on Friday, June 13 via iTunes and Stitcher.

While magazines and blog interviews often provide a peek behind the curtain and into the minds of music’s best musicians, every interviewer knows that there are nuances of humor, sarcasm, honesty, and even sadness that are left on the tape. Even the best journalist, one who gets close to translating the experience of hearing someone’s thoughts and words in their own voice, could never quite share 100 percent of that experience.

Appreciating this phenomenon, Dayton-based music journalist Tim Anderl (of YouIndie.com, Ghettoblaster Magazine, New Noise Magazine, etc.) teamed with Frank Steele, a professional media and video producer (Frame Jump Music Videos), to create the Sound Check Chat podcast.  The podcast shares the experience of dialing up a musician or talking to them one-on-one, face to face.  The podcast will typically drop on the first and 15th of every month.

On March 15, 2014, the podcast launched via iTunes, as well as at the Sound Check Chat website.  Previous podcasts included interviews with one-half of Insane Clown Posse, Violent J, JT of Hawthorne Heights, Grieves, Drew of Circle Takes The Square, Joe and Justin of The 1984 Draft, and Andy of Buffalo Killers.

In addition to the podcast, Sound Check Chat provides a show notes page providing background behind the podcast and artists covered, as well as links to topics discussed on the show.

Additional details about future podcasts, including those already in progress with Those Mockingbirds, Beebs and Her Moneymakers, Tiger Flowers, and more are forthcoming.  The podcasts are sponsored by Topshelf Records.

New condos on the block: The McCormick

June 15, 2014 By Teri Lussier 1 Comment

More residential options are coming to downtown Dayton, which is good news as more people living downtown should bring more business, more activity, more stuff! This time it’s the old Park Place apartments on E 1st St that are being converted into urban loft-style condos, and the building will be called, appropriatelyMcCormickenough, The McCormick.

Baseball lovers, Dayton Dragons fans take note- 5 units have views of the 5/3 Field, but because the building is in a relatively open part of the city, all units have unrestricted urban views. The McCormick lofts are listed by Steve Seboldt at Sibcy Cline (937-224-1234). Steve is very familiar with all the condo developments in downtown Dayton and tells me one of the features he most enjoys about the McCormick is the location. He spent one evening watching a game from the unit on the fourth floor. “It’s like you are right in the stadium,” he said.

Steve hails from Chicago and has an appreciation for urban loft living. He describes the condos as “laid out as true lofts with exposed beams, bare brick exterior walls and open duct work. Unique feature of these lofts include sliding “barn doors” especially in the front bed room which is next to the open living area.  This feature, in addition to being a neat “architectural”  loft feature, allows the front bedroom to be kind of an extension of the living area since most of these sliding doors have wider openings than normal doors.  This allows for a flexibility in living space where the front bedroom can be an office, a tv room or a second bedroom.” The100_8234floorplans I saw had tons of character with a nice blend of industrial and warmth- gorgeous exposed brick, fantastic glass shelving, warm wood finishes. The large windows let in lots of natural light as well.

Interior finishes can be upgraded, but each unit as is has bamboo flooring in all main living areas, carpet in bedrooms, and durable man-made flooring in baths and kitchen area.  Kitchens have stainless appliances.  To make the unit even more flexible, each kitchen has a island/breakfast counter that is on casters so it can be re-positioned throughout the condo for more flexibility when entertaining. That’s a great touch, and with the “barn door” sliders, you have more option for living and entertaining in each unit.

Everyone wants to know about parking and security. Seboldt says “Parking is fenced, and each unit gets 2 assigned spots.  The parking lot will be restriped and an architectural fence will replace current fence.” There is also an electronic card key access and a keypad protected elevator.

So. Really, what’s the neighborhood like? Downtown Dayton is your neighborhood so it’s baseball, performing arts, 2nd St Public Market, Riverscape, the new Water Street development. It’s a great location to be close to everything. Floor plans and prices will vary from unit to unit depending on number of bedrooms and100_8229upgrades, but Steve says “Pricing is way less than you would expect to pay for this type loft with this location.” Currently, pricing is listed as $56,000- $187,000, which make these a great option for anyone who is looking not only for a primary home, but also a 2nd home, and for empty-nesters looking to move to downtown.
