Victoria Theatre Association Announces $30 Million Endowment Campaign

October 22, 2014 By Dayton Most Metro

Victoria Theatre Association (VTA) hosted a private reception Tuesday evening announcing a $30 million endowment campaign with funds designated for the future capital, programming and educational needs of VTA’s arts facilities: the Benjamin & Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center, the Victoria Theatre, and the Metropolitan Arts Center, home to The Loft Theatre.

“Dayton is fortunate to have wonderful arts venues – the Benjamin & Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center, the Victoria Theatre, and the Metropolitan Arts Center, home to the Loft Theatre – that we own and operate on behalf of the community. We take stewardship of these buildings very seriously, “said Ken Neufeld, President & CEO of Victoria Theatre Association and the Arts Center Foundation. “In order to plan for the future and make sure each venue is maintained for generations, VTA requires building our current endowment. And that’s just what we’ve been doing. “

Ken-Neufeld-2014

Ken Neufeld

“The Next Stage Campaign has met with phenomenal response,” continues Neufeld. “We are already at 74% of our total goal of a $30 million endowment. Tonight – opening night of the 14-15 Premier Health Broadway Series – is about thanking the incredible companies, foundations, individuals and the State of Ohio who have helped us make it so far so quickly and about engaging a broader circle of friends to help us meet our goal.”

Current-use gifts and endowment funds raised through The Next Stage Campaign will be used to support:

  • Building upgrades and energy efficiency;
  • Technology improvements; and
  • New programming initiatives, with plans to introduce more young people to the special experience of the performing arts.

Projects already funded and completed through The Next Stage Campaign include new carpet throughout the Schuster Center and updated stage lighting controls for both the Mead Theatre (Schuster Center) and The Loft Theatre (Metropolitan Arts Center).

ST. VINCENT (Starring Bill Murray) & PRIDE (With Amazing British Cast) Start Friday at THE NEON!

October 21, 2014 By Jonathan McNeal

pride_ver3Hello Everyone,

If you’ve liked films like BILLY ELLIOT and THE FULL MONTY, I’m pretty certain you’re going to absolutely love PRIDE. The standing ovation at the screening I attended in Toronto was invigorating, and the film is more than just warm and charming – it’s inspiring. I hope you’ll come and support it this weekend. In addition to PRIDE, we will open the new Bill Murray comedy – ST. VINCENT. This film was also a crowd-pleaser when I saw it in Toronto, and I think Dayton audiences will like it as well. If you still need to see THE SKELETON TWINS, LOVE IS STRANGE, MY OLD LADY or THE TWO FACES OF JANUARY, you only have until Thursday to see them at THE NEON. Visit www.neonmovies.com for this week’s remaining showtimes.

As a reminder, we will have a special preview screening of ST. VINCENT on Thursday, Oct. 23 at 8:00. Regular ticket prices will apply…and we’ll have some fun prizes to give away!

Synopsis for PRIDE: “PRIDE is inspired by an extraordinary true story. It’s the summer of 1984, Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers is on strike, prompting a London-based group of gay and lesbian activists to raise money to support the strikers’ families. Initially rebuffed by the Union, the group identifies a tiny mining village in Wales and sets off to make their donation in person. As the strike drags on, the two groups discover that standing together makes for the strongest union of all.” This film stars some real heavyweight British actors like Imedla Staunton, Bill Nighy, Dominic West and Paddy Considine. Click this LINK to visit the film’s official site.

Synopsis for ST. VINCENT: “Maggie (Melissa McCarthy), a single mother, moves into a new home in Brooklyn with her 12-year old son, Oliver. Forced to work long hours, she has no choice but to leave Oliver in the care of their new neighbor, Vincent (Bill Murray), a retired curmudgeon with a penchant for alcohol and gambling. An odd friendship soon blossoms between the improbable pair. Together with a pregnant stripper named Daka (Naomi Watts), Vincent brings Oliver along on all the stops that make up his daily routine – the race track, a strip club, and the local dive bar. Vincent helps Oliver grow to become a man, while Oliver begins to see in Vincent something that no one else is able to: a misunderstood man with a good heart.” Click on this LINK to visit the film’s official site.

By now, many of you are familiar with Gathr and Tugg – platforms used to bring films to town that might not otherwise screen in our market. When you visit these sites, you can reserve a ticket that will help bring the film to THE NEON. If not enough tickets are reserved, the screening doesn’t go forward and your card is never charged. Here are 2 upcoming films that are attempting to come to town:
CULTURE HIGH, a film about the modern day marijuana debate – Wed. Nov. 5 at 7:30 – LINK for CULTURE HIGH
PENTON, a film about the American icon and motorcycle pioneer (this is an encore screening due to the sold-out success of the screening a month ago) – Thursday, Nov. 6 a 7:30 – LINK for PENTON

VSOP Music & Film is bringing HARLEM STREET SINGER – THE STORY OF REVEREND GARY DAVIS to THE NEON for a one-time screening on Wednesday, Nov. 12 at 7:30. “The film tells the story of the blind, self-taught musician Reverend Gary Davis. It chronicles his hardscrabble life and the profound impact he made on musicians eager to explore his technique – a homegrown guitar style forged from ragtime, gospel and blues. In addition to archival footage and interview segments with Bob Weir, Jorma Kaukonen, John Cohen, David Bromberg, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott and others, the film features newly recorded versions of songs Davis was closely identified with performed by a band led by Woody Mann. Blues and jazz historian (and frontman for the Classic Jazz Stompers) Dave Greer will lead a Q&A following the screeing.” (taken from VSOP Press Notes) Tickets will be $8 each and available starting Oct. 22 at THE NEON’s box office.

Thanks for your continued support!

We hope to see you soon,
Jonathan

Beer To Go From Fifth Street Brewpub

October 21, 2014 By Lisa Grigsby

10553348_581791191949146_77431318628932955_nOn Wed, Oct 21st the Fifth Street Brewpub will add growlers to their menu.  These 64 ounce refillable bottles allow you to take home your favorite brews from the brewpub.  Cure-All Cream Ale, Icebreaker IPA, 85 Shilling Scottish Ale, and Jo Jo’s Midnight Stout will be available to go.  Pick up your own growler for just $5 and then you can fill it with your favorite beer to enjoy at home.  According to FSB fills will run about $17-$18 and members will receive a dollar off each fill.

According to the Beer Advocate, in the late 1800s and early 1900s, fresh beer was carried from the local pub to one’s home by means of a small-galvanized pail. Rumor has it that when the beer sloshed around the pail, it created a rumbling sound as the CO2 escaped through the lid, thus the term “growler” was coined.
Before World War II, city kids used to bring covered buckets of draft beer from a local bar or brewery to workers at lunchtime or to their parents at dinnertime, a practice called “rushing the growler.”

For more information on Growlers, check out this article by Jeff Heater, GM of the soon to be open  The Barrel House:

Growlers, maybe you’ve heard of ‘em?

And if you want to know where you can fill a growler in town, check out our list of over 30 places around town that will happily pour you some beer to go! Just note that you must always refrigerate growlers. Doing so will give them a shelf-life of 7-10 days, or around 2-3 days once opened – if you’re lucky.

Les Miserables Collaboration Creates Big Sound

October 21, 2014 By Megan Cooper

LesMizDo you hear the people sing? You will – but it’s this weekend only. Les Miserables is getting a fresh staging and a BIG sound with a collaboration between Dayton Playhouse and Miami Valley  Symphony Orchestra at the Masonic Center for an orchestral and vocal production. The team of Brian Sharp (Director), Erik Strope (Vocal Director), and Ron Kindell (Orchestra Conductor) is working together to bring this show to Dayton. I recently talked to Brian Sharp for some insights into how the production came together and what audiences can expect.

Is Les Mis a personal favorite of yours? Do you remember when you first saw it and how you felt?

I saw Les Mis the first time on Broadway…and loved the music…but was not fond of the original staging, etc.  I always found the music thrilling and emotional.
Les Mis has been around for a while and is fairly well-known. What makes now the right time for a community theatre to produce it locally in Dayton?

As far as why is this right now…and still appropriate? There is really no way for a community theatre to mount a production this large.  The idea of a partnership was perfect.  It would allow a full symphony and the opportunity to fill the cast with voices from all over the Miami Valley area. The music is timeless…and is much loved!

This is a pretty huge show to tackle. Did you have any concerns with such a big endeavor?

Just the sheer magnitude of the auditions was an undertaking.  We had over 200 people audition and had them scheduled every ten minutes…we auditioned over the course of a week…and then had a follow up chorus audition. There were concerns with rehearsal space because of the size of the cast and orchestra.  Once the auditions were complete…I had no concerns with the voices…these really are the best of the best!

Brian Sharp

Is this adaptation different than the shows come of our readers may have seen traveling? All the same songs, setting, staging?

This adaptation will be similar to what was seen on the 10th and 25th anniversary shows.  However, there is a twist.  My big concern with this type of version is how do we keep the story clear to the audience. We have worked with a Broadway projection company to use projections that have never been seen anywhere in the Midwest.  It will truly be sensory overload…the visual piece of the costumed actors/singers, the magnificent symphony orchestra and then this visual element is sure to add another amazing element.

Can you tell me about the collaboration between the Playhouse and the MVSO?

The collaboration was just kind of a natural fit. Many of their musicians have played in the pit orchestras for our musicals. This is an opportunity for us to give back.

Does the setting of the Masonic Center add to the drama of the show?

The Masonic Center is grand, and allows us to sell up to 1500 seats per performance, so there are plenty of tickets available. It will definitely add to the performance and they have been fantastic to work with.
Anything else our audiences should know?

I simply hope the community realizes what an opportunity this is for them…we have positioned the orchestra in such a way that the audience will feel up close and personal with the musicians.  This is a production that should not be missed. Tickets are only $20/$18 and that is a bargain for what you will be receiving.

Tickets are available now for the performances Friday, October 24 and Saturday, October 25 (both at 8 p.m.) and Sunday, October 26 at 2 p.m. They can be purchased online at wordpress.thedaytonplayhouse.com. However, a lucky Dayton Most Metro reader will have the chance to win a pair of tickets to see the show!  Just fill out this form below and tell us in the comments why you should win! [form 55 “DMM Contest Entry – Generic”]

Catapult Creative Branding Dayton Bike Share

October 20, 2014 By Guest Contributor

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]It’s hard to believe that only 10 months ago we were sitting in one of the four rooms that made up our office on Linden Avenue late one evening and began concepting ideas for how we could share  our love and appreciation for the city we call home. Namely, to create the landscape and platform to help showcase and motivate others to truly embrace exploring and discovering all the wonderful things Dayton has to offer – to date your city.

The positive response to these initial concepts has been very humbling, especially how much we’ve managed to accomplish in such a short amount of time, with so much yet to come. These efforts have paid off, and now we are charged with developing an identity for one the most exciting expansions to hit downtown in recent years.

Baton founder Jordan Hockett with Matthew and myself

Left to right: Josh, Baton founder Jordan Hockett, Matthew

But first, let’s take a look at what got us here.

With the rise of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram it’s never been easier to showcase what moves and inspires you, and then share it with the world. We saw this happening everyday with three Dayton-centric social media accounts who used gorgeous photos to prove that Dayton is a great American city. We contacted and met with the creators of these accounts – Dayton Baton, Daytongram and Dayton’s Best – and shared our vision with them. That Vision: Work cooperatively and our goals will be that much easier to achieve. They got it immediately. So we united them under a thematically similar brand and began concepting the various ways they could work together.

The next step was joining forces with Dayton Most Metro to provide an additional platform and unifying entity to tie these social media accounts together. Matthew and I were brought on as co-publishers and got to work on planning the redesign for the next iteration of the site to actualize our vision. The first step was building a portal that both explained who the social media accounts were, their mission, and gave them the online tools to achieve that mission. The Mission: To inject our community with positivity and self-worth, and show everyone every day a new perspective on what makes our city great.

Meeting at 5th Street

Meeting at 5th Street

We continued to put these social media accounts in touch with other community members who shared the same ideals, which led to a meeting with Olivia Barrow, of the Dayton Business Journal. What was supposed to be a quick meetup over a drink at 5th Street Brew Pub with Jordan Hockett, Tom Gilliam, Matthew, Oliva and myself became a two hour discussion that led to the idea of developing a well-branded self esteem campaign for the city. Tentatively called “I Love Dayton,” Olivia presented the idea at the UpDayton Summit. Amazingly our collaborative idea was chosen.

dayton inspires

Provided by Dayton Inspires

Soon a committee was formed to develop the concept and Catapult became an obvious choice to participate in both the vision for the campaign and to create the brand itself. In the end our idea for Dayton Inspires was chosen among a number of different great brand names. We then designed the logo, and worked closely with Olivia and the committee to concept and design everything from stickers, posters, temporary tattoos and even a photobooth backdrop that have been unrolled over the past two months.

During all of this we also participated in the Activated Spaces program to move our offices downtown into the Talbott Tower. Downtown is where the action is, which is where we wanted to be, and just being here has led to a tremendous amount of growth and opportunity. Our street level office lets Dayton see our creativity on a daily basis, and demonstrate that a young creative agency can succeed here.

With Batman donning the cowl in our window, he has become a mantle of inspiration for us to focus on something greater than ourselves. To absorb ourselves in our city, to give back and help change the perception of fear, apathy and doubt into a calm, renewed sense of community. Everyday we are in the thick of it and are reminded of why we chose to be here.

All of these efforts have culminated in an exciting announcement and opportunity for Catapult Creative. We have been selected to concept and create both the name and logo for the Dayton Bike Share Program. We believe this project ties in perfectly with our vision of a Dayton that’s both growing and redefining what it means to live here. It is also perhaps a key reason we were selected among some true goliaths in the industry. We are excited to bring a youthful energetic passion, outside the box solutions, and outstanding design and branding to this elemental project for downtown.

We are Dayton. Dayton is us. This must be great.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”50501″ alignment=”center” border_color=”grey” img_link_target=”_self” img_size=”full”][vc_column_text]

Some key points on the Dayton Bike Share:

  • When it launches in spring 2015, Dayton will be one of 25+ cities across the U.S. with bike share systems.
  • There will be 22 bike stations within a two mile radius of downtown, with each station containing six to ten bikes – totaling more than 200 bikes.
  • Customers, who range from one-day users to annual subscribers, unlock the bikes and may ride to any other station or back to the original location at the end of their trip.

Made up of 9 local organizations, The Bike Share Planning Team is a fantastic example of the collaborative mindset that is so crucial to Dayton’s continued development.

There’s been a refreshing new appreciation for the value of knowing your community, and the Bike Share Planning Team has made that a primary focus for this branding effort.

We begin our journey with the Dayton Bike Share Program this week with an excitement fueled by fresh ideas and a sense of ownership that this must be great not only for the program and for our business, but for the citizens of this city we love.

I look forward to taking the first ride around this spring, and seeing a much more connected downtown.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Ugly Kids Club: Recruiting Dayton’s Own To Join

October 19, 2014 By Dayton Most Metro

One of Aliegh Shields’s older silbings was part of an emo/indie rock band from Nashville, Tennesse titled The Class of 98.  The  band, led by guitarist and vocalist Steve Wilson, saw some of success with some of their songs being played on some of the television  programming on the E! and the WB networks.  The band was short lived, only being together between years 2004-2007, and 2010-  2014.  During a tour across the Midwest, however, Wilson and the band stayed over at the Shields residence instead of getting a  hotel room.

During the duration of the band crashing at the house where the older Shields lived in Springfield, Illinois, Wilson overheard Aliegh  singing one night, and fell in love with her voice.  Being the youngest of four-Aliegh always had her dreams and aspirations set to  eventually become a singer.

“I was making everything a microphone,” Shields explained during a recent phone conversation.  “A lot of times I was in my room  singing to the wall (laughter).  I was constantly my way of playing-singing and playing like I was in concert.  I think I sang to our fish, which made a pretty fun.  They were a good audience.”

After moving to Nashville right after high school, Shields was a guitar playing songstress with a solo development deal and started working with one of the producers in town.  When they parted ways, Shields turned to Wilson to help and finish up the solo tracks.  She knew that Wilson was living in Nashville, and was producing music projects with group such as The Juliana Theory and Jonezetta, while writing, producing and playing in The Class of ‘98 and Hether, who got a development deal on their own with Interscope Records. Wilson also was Grammy nominated with his work with the band Leeland.

Already knowing each other, the two felt comfortable with working together.  They soon would uncover a mutual desire over their love for minimalist rock duos like Sleigh Bells, Crystal Castles and The Kills.  In 2011-the duo of began the group Ugly Kids Club.

“We worked so well together, and I wanted someone that was into a little more team effort,” Shields mentions.

In January 2012, Ugly Kids Club released their first self-titled EP.  They were able to grab ahold of their own sound with a mixture of grungy rock embedded with electronic beats that is not only dark but also catchy with pop undertones.  After releasing the self-titled EP and going on the road for a little bit, they decided to take a break.  The goal was to become more cohesive in their writing.

Their recent EP release, Head Games, is a more polished album that contains whimsical soundscapes to lush 80s synths.  The duo crafts electro-pop driven tunes, while still maintain that pop-grunge vibe that was so visible in their first EP.  The EP involves all the stages of a relationship that eventually doesn’t really work out.

With the duo continuing to work on building their sound, both Shields and Wilson both strive to push each other creatively.

“We’ve written a bunch of other songs, so we working towards another EP early in the next year,” Wilson stated.  For now, though, the duo plan on hitting the road-which includes making a stop in Dayton tonight at Blind Bob’s.

It was a little over seven years till both Shields and Wilson’s lives would interconnect again, and form Ugly Kids Club

And this time-the duo are planning to make it more long-lasting.

Visit Ugly Kids Club here: http://www.uglykidsclub.com, or check them out at Blind Bob’s tonight with Dear Fawn, Skurt, and A Shade of Red.

An Evening With Bruce Hornsby

October 18, 2014 By Dayton Most Metro

Pianist, composer, and singer-songwriter Bruce Hornsby’s recording career has spanned over two-and-a-half decades.  Within that  time, Hornsby’s music has been recognized with several awards/acknowledgements that include the 1987 Grammy Award for Best  New Artist with Bruce Hornsby and the Range, the 1990 Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album, and the 1994 Grammy Award for  Best Pop Instrumental Performance.  Tonight-Hornsby will be taking the stage in Victoria Theatre with “An Evening with Bruce  Hornsby”, in support of his recent release, Bruce Hornsby-Solo Concerts.

Growing up in Williamsburg, Virginia, Hornsby graduated from James Blair High School in 1973.  In the spring of 1974 Hornsby’s  older brother Bobby, who attended the University of Virginia, formed the band Bobby Hi-Test and the Octane Kids.  The band, which  featured Bruce on guitar, performed covers at fraternity parties at the college.  Hornsby also studied music at the University of  Richmond, as well as Berklee College of Music and in 1977, he graduated at the University of Miami.

After years of playing in bars and sending demo tapes to record companies, in n 1980, he and his brother John moved to Los Angeles,  where they spent three years writing for 20th Century Fox. Hornsby finally signed his band, the Range, to RCA in 1985.  The Way It  Is, the band’s debut, produced three Top 20 hits, the biggest of which was the socially conscious “The Way It Is,” and the heartbreaking “Mandolin Rain”.

Since the debut with his band the Range and the work that he has done solo, Bruce Hornsby has expanded his music into many genres-pop, jazz, bluegrass, country and modern classical.  He has pursued a musical career that has included collaborations with artists Ricky Skaggs, Don Henley, Ornette Coleman, Bob Dylan, Bela Fleck, Bonnie Raitt, Pat Metheny, and Robbie Robertson.  Hornsby also played piano and accordion for a period of time with the one and only Grateful Dead from 1988 until Jerry Garcia’s death in 1995.

Hornsby’s newest release off his Vanguard Records in August, the two-disc set Bruce Hornsby–Solo Concerts.  The album are culled from Hornsby solo concerts performed in the U.S. during 2012 and 2013.  Bruce Hornsby–Solo Concerts involves what Hornsby calls an “unholy alliance” of comforting Americana and daunting composition.

Hornsby’s performance, which usually contains his backing The Nosemakers, offers audiences a glimpse of a restless spirit who continues to push forward into exciting new musical terrain.  That passionate energy comes alive in each of the shows.

“An Evening with Bruce Hornsby”, will be held at Victoria Theatre tonight starting at 8pm.  Every ticket to this performance includes a copy of Solo Concerts.  Tickets can be purchased at Victoria Theatre’s Box Office or https://www.ticketcenterstage.com.

An Evening of Beer Education with Joshua Bernstein

October 17, 2014 By Brian Petro

The Complete Beer Course

One book for all your beer education needs.

It does not seem all that long ago, but it has been over thirty years since craft beers began to emerge. The beer scene in America, on rocky ground since Prohibition, had fully bottomed out in the 1970’s and looked like it might stay there. Fortunately, Jimmy Carter relaxed federal brewing standards in 1978, allowing people who may have just been tinkering with brewing beer or making their own wine become a little more serious about it. The movement started off slowly, but exploded in the mid-1990’s, with breweries and brewpubs popping up everywhere. The beer drinking public was introduced to styles of beer that had not been seen in America since the early 20th Century. With the number of breweries, and beers, that were springing up through the country, it became very easy to get lost in all of the styles and intricacies of the various beers. Hop varietals? Imperial IPAs? Lambics? What were all these new beer styles? And how were we, the drinking public, supposed to keep up?

With all of these new beers hitting the shelves, crowding out the large corporate beers and infusing a newurl interest in beer, people started to take notice. Especially the media. The New York Press was one of those media outlets. They put an intrepid young writer, Joshua Bernstein, on the bar beat. His adventures in the bar scene of the City That Never Sleeps eventually brought him to the restaurant beat, and an interest in the expanding craft beer scene. He has been exploring the beer scene since then for well-known publications like Bon Appetit, Saveur, Details, The New York Times, and is a contributing editor for Imbibe. The man knows, and enjoys, his beer. He used his experiences to write a pair of books to help those that have entered the world of craft beers find their way a little easier. His first book, Brewed Awakening, is an impressive tome for those looking to start exploring the world of craft beer and could use a guide to help them with the intricacies of it. The Complete Beer Course is a different kind of twelve step program, starting with the basics and leading the reader on to beer pairing and proper long term storage of beer.

Warped Wing Pirogue

Warped Wing has been crafting innovative beers for a thirsty Dayton population.

Dayton has been having its own craft beer boom. The Dayton Beer Company was the first to the party, and the number of breweries in the Miami Valley has been rising ever since.  One of the many breweries that have been born during this growth spurt is Warped Wing, who this year released their beers in cans and continues to brew beers that grab your attention, and your taste buds. Warped Wing knows that with all of the new beers in the city, patrons new to craft beer may need a primer.  Who better to offer that primer than a native son of the Gem City, now based in the Big Apple, Joshua Bernstein? He will be at Warped Wing this Monday, offering an educational evening of beer tasting and appreciation. Tickets are still available, and they are offering discounted rate for designated drivers. Purchase your tickets early, because the price goes up if you buy tickets at the door. From the most experienced beer drinker to someone just dipping their tongue into the beer pool, this is an opportunity to meet and learn from one of the top names in the field today. We will see you at Warped Wing Monday Night!

Gaggle of Stars in New Movies at THE NEON!

October 16, 2014 By Jonathan McNeal

the-two-faces-of-january-posterHello Everyone,

We’re holding both LOVE IS STRANGE and THE SKELETON TWINS for one more week, but we’re going to add two new films into the mix. On Friday, we will open a film starring Dame Maggie Smith, always loved by our regulars, in MY OLD LADY – also starring Kevin Kline and Kristin Scott Thomas. In addition, we will open a stylish adaptation of a Patricia Highsmith thriller – THE TWO FACES OF JANUARY – starring Kirsten Dunst, Viggo Mortensen, and Oscar Isaac. All of these films will end their runs on Thursday, Oct. 23…so hurry down if you want to see them. Visit www.neonmovies.com for this week’s remaining showtimes.

Synopsis for MY OLD LADY: One Week Only! “Mathias Gold (Kevin Kline) is a down-on-his-luck New Yorker who inherits a Parisian apartment from his estranged father. But when he arrives in France to sell the vast domicile, he’s shocked to discover a live-in tenant who is not prepared to budge. His apartment is a viager – an ancient French real estate system with complex rules pertaining to its resale – and the feisty Englishwoman Mathilde Girard (Maggie Smith), who has lived in the apartment with her daughter Chloe (Kristin Scott Thomas) for many years, can by contract collect monthly payments from Mathias until her death.” (taken from Cohen Media) Click this LINK to visit the film’s official site.

Synopsis for THE TWO FACES OF JANUARY: One Week Only! “Screenwriter Hossein Amini (The Wings of the Dove, Drive) makes a stylish directing debut with this sleek thriller set in Greece and Istanbul, 1962, and adapted from Patricia Highsmith’s novel. Intrigue begins at the Parthenon when wealthy American tourists Chester MacFarland (Viggo Mortensen) and his young wife Collete (Kirsten Dunst) meet American expat Rydal (Oscar Isaac), a scammer working as a tour guide. Instead of becoming his latest marks, the two befriend him, but a murder at the couple’s hotel puts all three on the run together and creates a precarious bond between them as the trio’s allegiance is put to the test.”

On Sunday, Oct. 19 at 5:30, Jeff Akers has rented one of our auditoriums to locally premiere his new short film ILLUMINATION. “Jeff Akers Films, a subsidiary of NJP Media Network, is pleased to announce the release of the riveting new short film ILLUMINATION, which brings to light the mindset of an unbeliever who continues to deny that God is real. The film is set in current reality but personifies new age technology and the power it can have on those in control of it. ILLUMINATION stars veteran actor Shane Willimon, as well as newcomers like Chedrick Cohens, Kenya Permenter, and Darrell Brown who bring this film to life with their skill and believability on screen. Director Jeff Akers plans to screen the film in Greenville, SC and Dayton, Ohio where the majority of it was filmed, he will also enter the production into numerous Christian-based film festivals. ‘This film will not only surprise people, but it will have them thinking on a completely different level,’ he stated. Akers plans to leave you pining for more compelling films and industrials that change your thinking and re-shape your awareness.” (taken from press notes) Akers will attend this screening, and tickets are $5 each – available at THE NEON.

Many thanks to everyone who came out for The Dayton LGBT Film Festival. We had 3 sold-out screenings, and audiences seemed quite enthused by the selections and Opening Night Party. We’re still tabulating the audience award winners…so click this LINK for the festival’s Facebook page later this weekend to find out the latest.

On October 24, we are opening two new films – PRIDE (which is exceptional) and ST. VINCENT (in which Bill Murray is a scream). That said, we just booked a special preview of ST. VINCENT for Thursday, October 23 at 8:00 – where we will have some fun giveaways! Tickets will be available for this special screening by the weekend.

Thanks for your continued support!
We hope to see you soon,
Jonathan

Top Dog: Zombie Dogz Food Truck Still Leading the Pack

October 16, 2014 By Dayton937 4 Comments

“New Dog #2” Zombie Dogz Latest Pup!

Who waits in a line 70 yards long for a hot dog?   The answer is a lot of people in the Dayton area, as long as they are waiting for a Zombie Dog. In fact, with over 16,000 “Likes” on Facebook, this food truck is nothing short of a phenomenon!  Since Food Adventures with Big Ragu and the Crew are frequent visitors to this traveling delight, we decided to spread the word amongst our foodie readers!  Hungry Jax even marked this territory as one of her “Top Five Eats in Dayton” so no one has had more Zombie Dogz than us …

With Halloween approaching and The Walking Dead Zombie show starting back up, it is the perfect time for a Zombie Dogz Food Adventure  article!

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— Zombie Dogz is a food truck that takes hot dogs to a gourmet level with their unique toppings and handcrafted side dishes.

— Mom and pop establishment founded in 2012 by David and Lee Ann Van Artsdalen. They recently welcomed the newest member of their family this spring, baby Barrett Axel!

— Budget friendly at only $6/dog, you’ll be able to feed your own pack a hot dog that’s been grilled, tucked into a grilled bun and topped with combinations that will make you howl in delight!

The Van Artsdalen Pack” – Lee Ann, David and Baby Barrett Axell

— Not a carnivore? No worries! They offer tofu dog’s as a substitute.

— In the “ZD” logo, you’ll see the silhouette of David and Lee Ann’s dog, “Gauge”!  He even has a Zombie Dog named after him, the “Killer Gauge”.

Zombie Dogz offers up hot dogs that will surely make you salivate! You can find a full menu on their website, however they rotate it weekly to offer a wide variety.  To see what Specialty Dogz are offered this week, and to stay on top of their latest creations, tune into their Facebook page HERE.   They have so many delicious dogz, that it’s hard to nail it down to a few faves….. but we did.  Here are our top dogz aka Must Eats !!

MUST EATS:

— CALLING IN DEAD: There’s nothing dead about this dog. An all beef hot dog topped with a creamy homemade white truffle mac & cheese  and finished off with crumbled crackers.  It’s your childhood in a bun…. but better.

— THE DEAD DIXIE: This pup is covered in diced green apples, applewood smoked bacon, blue cheese crumbles and their signature bbq sauce! A great way to eat all of your food groups in just one bun!

— THE GERMANATOR (DAYTON OKTOBERFEST SPECIAL):  Topped with a braised beef brisket, crispy fried onions and a homemade beer cheese. This dog would surely satisfy the appetite of a former Governor of California!

“Calling in Dead”: Your childhood in a bun.

— NEW DOG #2:  It’s not uncommon for one of their new masterpieces to debut nameless. Zombie Dogz enlists their Facebook followers to take part of the naming process! This dog debuted at Oktoberfest as well. Topped with apple cider braised carnitas, spiced apples, arugula, butternut squash puree, and a sage crumble.  It is simply Autumn deliciousness, with toppings Chef House can appreciate.

— THE NIBBLER:- An American classic turned Zombie! This is their take on a coney is topped in homemade chili, diced red onions, mustard, and muenster cheese.  The King likes to tear into these like a dead walker into fresh meat!

— KILLER GAUGE – Named after their beloved dog, this hot dog is topped with a buffalo chicken dip, celery bits, blue cheese and ranch.

Honorable Mention: THE GRANDE ZOMBE: Pronounced “Grand-ay, zom-bay,” this spicy little number includes queso sauce, shredded lettuce, cilantro sour cream, and crushed corn chips.  We like to heat up the night with this graveyard favorite.  Also, check out Big Ragu’s favorite, the dessert Zombie Dog called the “RED ROCKET” which is a banana in a bun  covered with peanut butter powder, stawberry jelly, white chocolate chips and pop rocks !

**** IMPORTANT: Not every one of these Zombie Dogz are offered all the time.  They typically offer a few choices and rotate those throughout the year.  David and Lee Ann are always coming up with new flavors, so stay tuned.

“Dead Dixie”: Bacon, Apple and Blue Cheese Bliss.

From festivals, to food truck rallies, horror conventions, Oktoberfest or special single appearances, Zombie Dogz delivers the goods.  Our advice when they are around .. GET THERE EARLY, because this food truck is anything but dead.  They are easily the most popular food truck in Dayton.  Is it the Zombie Name?  Is it the one of a kind, unique toppings?  Is it the reasonable prices? The great customer service? For us, it’s all of the above!

The question we hear most is “Where can I find a schedule of where they are going to be?”  The answer is to stay updated through the Food Truck link on  Dayton Most Metro or follow Zombie Dogz on their Facebook  page.

Speaking of Facebook, follow our new Food Adventure Crew with Hungry Jax, Chef House, The King, and the Big Ragu on Facebook by clicking HERE.

Cant get enough Zombie Dogz?  Then check out the photo gallery below for our huge collection of  pictures.  Food Adventures has some fantastic photos of many of their offerings!

Homearama Luxury Edition Comes To Clearcreek Township

October 14, 2014 By Dayton Most Metro

HomearamaThe Home Builders Association of Dayton is excited to bring the 2014 Homearama Luxury Edition to Auteur Estates in Clearcreek Township in beautiful Warren County. With the incredibly harsh and long winter the Dayton area experienced at the end of last year and the beginning of this year’s building season, combined with an uptick in the Dayton region home building activity which has created a limited, skilled labor pool impacting schedules, the show, originally scheduled for September, will be delayed to October 17th through November 2. The complexity of the homes has not deterred the builders as they have been working feverishly with the recent months with improved weather conditions
