Broadway Revues to Live Sculpting At ARTSGALA

March 25, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

yield-sign-smallerThe annual Wright State University Arts Gala, which has raised more than $1.75 million for arts scholarships during its 15-year history, is scheduled for Saturday, March 28, with an impressive program featuring student performances in theatre, dance, motion pictures, music and visual arts.

The event will showcase the efforts of Wright State fine and performing arts students and educators who have been recognized for their achievement by Academy Award–winning actor and Wright State supporter Tom Hanks. Hanks and Amanda Wright Lane, great grand-niece of the Wright brothers, are co-chairs of Rise. Shine. The Campaign for Wright State University, a $150 million fundraising campaign that promises to further elevate Wright State’s prominence by expanding scholarships, attracting more top-flight faculty and supporting construction of state-of-the-art facilities.

“Wright State is training the artists of tomorrow. I know because I’ve worked with some of Wright State’s alumni, and they’re among the best in their fields,” Hanks said about Wright State’s arts students. “Wright State not only has one of the most outstanding arts programs in Ohio, but one of the best in the entire nation.”

The 6:30 p.m. to midnight event in the Creative Arts Center is presented by the College of Liberal Arts. The popular black-tie-optional Arts Gala is regarded as one of the area’s premier events, drawing over 700 patrons each year.  Co-chaired by Joe and Kelly Lehman, who’s son Evan will be the guest conductor on the Wind Symphony Concert at 7pm in the Shuster Hall, encourage everyone to come see the amazingly talented student artists that will be performing all night.

Because of the on-going renovations and expansion to the Creative Arts Center, guests at this year’s ArtsGala will get a sneak preview of a world-class fine and performing arts center in the making. Come marvel at the inspiring talents of Wright State’s students and celebrate the dramatic transformation of the Creative Arts Center, as it becomes an elegant showplace for arts education and performance.

“We are so excited about this ArtsGala, coming off of the huge record breaking attendance and scholarship proceeds from last year. Our students are so eager to showcase their tremendous skills, and we are pleased to be sharing our expertise and talent with the broader community. This ArtsGala launches us into our huge Creative Arts Center modernization and expansion project. So come experience history — the last time you will see the CAC the way it used to be – and share in our students’ excitement and success.” said Kristin Sobolik, Ph.D., dean of the College of Liberal Arts.

“Receiving the ARTSGALA scholarship during my time at Wright State was a beautiful gift. The support was inspiring, pushing me to excel academically and artistically. I would like to thank the ARTSGALA community for their generosity and their investment in me.” —Megan Spencer, Art Alumna ‘13

theatre.jpg“I came to Wright State setting out to become the best artist that I could be. I knew I had talent and passion, but I needed a place where my gifts could be strengthened by quality training. Here I was met by incredible teachers and amazingly talented students who inspire me daily and give me tools to perfect my craft. This encouraging environment draws greatness out of anyone with a dream, and the ARTSGALA scholarships gives us the support we need to grow and t music.jpghrive.  Thank you!” — Jasmine Easler, Acting

“It took me over a year to decide to come to Wright State, but when I did, it was clear that I had made the right choice. Being awarded the ARTSGALA scholarship was the first of many game-changing moments for me here at WSU and such an unbelievably motivating and empowering experience! I am forever grateful for the people who make it possible.” — Stephen Monath, Music

“I knew from the moment I stepped onto campus that Wright State was where I was meant to be. In my short time there I learned continuously, discovered beauty in all the forgotten places, and grew more than I ever believed possible for myself.   I’ve always dreamed of pursuing a career in theatre. With support from ARTSGALA I was able to make my dream a reality. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all that you give and for changing my life!”  —Regina Villaver, Theatre Alumna ’13

“I am grateful to be part of such a supportive arts community. I was honored to be selected as an ARTSGALA Scholarship recipient during my time at Wright State.  Receiving this support was not only encouraging but also very rewarding as it allowed me to be more focused on my art.” —Ross Hale, Art Alumnus ’13

Sub Lovers Make A Difference For URS

March 24, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

mikesSub lovers from coast to coast can make a substantial difference tomorrow by joining Jersey Mike’s “Day of Giving.”

Jersey Mike’s Subs, known for its authentic fresh sliced/fresh grilled subs, is donating 100 percent of sales to more than 120 local charities including schools, hospitals, youth organizations, food banks and more. Always held on the last Wednesday of March, the “Day of Giving,” this year on March 25, is the culmination of Jersey Mike’s 5th Annual March “Month of Giving” fundraising campaign.

Throughout the month, customers have been invited to visit their local Jersey Mike’s restaurant and donate to that location’s designated charity partner. Last year’s “Month of Giving” initiative raised $2.1 million for 100 different charities nationwide and the company hopes to raise even more this year.

“I would like to extend a personal invitation to come in and enjoy a Jersey Mike’s sub on Wednesday, March 25, our Day of Giving, when 100 percent of sales go to amazing charities throughout the country,” said Peter Cancro, Jersey Mike’s founder and CEO, who started the company when he was only 17 years old. “This year, we hope to raise more than $2.5 million to support local causes, bring hope to all those involved with the charities and make a difference in people’s lives.”jerseyurs

The company is committed to raising as much money as possible for these important causes. For added momentum, since March 15, Jersey Mike’s has been running a special Month of Giving commercial, with a tag in each market noting the local charity and inviting the public in to any of its participating locations nationwide to celebrate the “Day of Giving.”

Dayton-area Jersey Mikes Subs will give 100% of sales from their “Day of Giving” to URS: United Rehabilitation Services on Wednesday, March 25th from 10 am – 9 pm. Enjoy a delicious sub for $1 off (http://tinyurl.com/qhyh72g) and make a difference in the lives of local children and adults with disabilities!

“Giving…making a difference in someone’s life” has been the mission of Jersey Mike’s from the beginning. Since 2010, Jersey Mike’s locations have raised more than $10 million for worthy local charities and have distributed more than 1 million free sub sandwiches to help numerous causes.

Jersey Mike’s believes that making a sub sandwich and making a difference can be one and the same, a philosophy that has fueled the sub sandwich chain’s popularity.  Following its successful recipe of deliberate, well-considered expansion, Jersey Mike’s has more than doubled in size in just three years.

UPDATE – MOMMY and IT FOLLOWS Are Opening at THE NEON!

March 24, 2015 By Jonathan McNeal

mommy_ver2Hello Everyone,

Earlier today, I made an announcement about WOMAN IN GOLD opening at THE NEON on April 1…that plan has changed.  The Weinstein Company has made big changes to their release strategy for WOMAN IN GOLD.  After confirming April 1 as its opening date for us, they have yanked it away (from us and numerous other cinemas across the country).  At this time, we don’t know if we will be able to play the film when it finally becomes available in our market.  That said, I have made the appropriate changes to this week’s newsletter below.  Thanks for your understanding – this is very frustrating news (not to mention a terrible waste of time, energy and our valuable on-screen marketing).

We are officially overbooked at THE NEON, and we need to get moving with some titles.  Though LEVIATHAN is one of the best reviewed films we’ve played in a long time (and audiences were in awe this weekend), it didn’t perform well for us…so Thursday will be your last chance to catch it at THE NEON.  On Friday, we will open 2 new films.  Xavier Dolan’s MOMMY will screen once a day starting Friday, and IT FOLLOWS will get a full run (we haven’t played a horror film in a long, long time – this one is getting great reviews).  All that said, we’ll keep bothSECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL and WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS for another week.  For this week’s remaining showtimes (they’re different than the upcoming week – which are listed below), please visit our website at www.neonmovies.com

Synopsis for MOMMY: From Wunderkind Xavier Dolan comes this year’s Oscar submission from Canada – MOMMY. Dolan has won numerous awards at Cannes and around the world for his 5 feature-length films, and he just turned 26. “A feisty widowed single mom finds herself burdened with the full-time custody of her rambunctious 15-year-old ADHD son. As they try to make ends meet, Kyla, the peculiar girl across the street, offers her help. Together, they find a new sense of balance, and hope is regained.” (taken from Roadside Attractions) This is a strictly limited engagement with just a handful of screenings, and we’re one of a few cinemas in Ohio to play it. Don’t miss it! Click this LINK to visit the film’s official site.

Synopsis for IT FOLLOWS: It’s been a long time since THE NEON has screened a horror film, and fans on Facebook seem enthusiastic for the engagement of this critically acclaimed film…let’s see if that excitement really translates to solid box office numbers. “For 19-year-old Jay (Maika Monroe), fall should be about school, boys and weekends out at the lake. But after a seemingly innocent sexual encounter, she finds herself plagued by strange visions and the inescapable sense that someone, or something, is following her. Faced with this burden, Jay and her teenage friends must find a way to escape the horrors that seem to be only a few steps behind.” (taken from RADiUS/Weinstein Co.) Click this LINK to visit the film’s official site.

Don’t forget that tomorrow, Wednesday, March 25, The Alumni Chair in Humanities at UD will present special screenings of Stanley Kubrick’s classic film PATHS OF GLORY – starring Kirk Douglas. Dr. Tony Smith will introduce the award-winning film, and the screenings are free for UD faculty, staff and students. Tickets for the general public are available for a suggested donation of $5. Seating will be on a first come, first serve basis. The movie will screen at 7:30 and 9:30. The presentation of this film is part of the World War I cohort project at UD.

LUNAFEST is Back! On Sunday, April 12 at 3:00, The Dayton Women’s Rights Alliance will present the popular touring festival of short films by, for about women! “Established in 2000 by LUNA, the makers of the Whole Nutrition Bar for Women, LUNAFEST connects women, their stories and their causes through film. This traveling film festival spotlights the work of a diverse array of talented women filmmakers with intelligent, funny and thought-provoking themes. Equally important, LUNAFEST can be used as a ‘fundraiser-in-a-box.’ helping hosts raise money for nonprofits in their own communities, as well as the Breast Cancer Fund. 100 percent of all net proceeds are donated to charity. LUNAFEST’s main beneficiary, the Breast Cancer Fund…Tickets are $5 for students with valid IDs and $10 for general admission. Lunafest is sponsored by The Dayton Women’s Rights Alliance – a feminist organization whose members work to promote and protect the rights of women of all classes, races and cultures. We seek to foster education and activism, and we work with community organizations challenging sexism, racism, homophobia, ageism, classism, poverty and other manifestations of injustice.” (taken from DWRA press notes) Click this LINK to read more about the films.

The Dayton Jewish International Film Festival is preparing another incredible slate of films for you. Screenings will kick off later in April, and the official website will be available soon, but if you want to take a peek at some of the titles, visit The Jewish Community Center’s Event Page by clicking this LINK.

Every year when I come back from The Toronto International Film Festival, people ask me how hard it is to get tickets and participate. While anyone can go to TIFF (you don’t have to be an industry insider), so many people don’t realize that there’s a huge, incredible, well-respected film festival just a few hours away. The Cleveland International Film Festival has grown and grown over the years, and I’ll be attending the final 5 days of the festival – staring tomorrow. Check out the official website to see just how impressive it really is.

I hope you’ll help keep THE NEON nice and busy in my absence, and I hope to see you soon when I get back.

Thanks for your continued support.
Jonathan

A Lighthearted Look At The Heart Of Dayton Love

March 24, 2015 By Nikki Nett

Calm down. Seriously. Before you create another twitter account, just calm down.

“But Dayton is awesome and I want the world to know!!!!!!!!!!”i_love_dayton_ohio_postcard-r8f30bb3fcea74d3c81c8d412d3a5d9c2_vgbaq_8byvr_324

Yes, indeed it is, and other people feel that way, too.

“But I have the best idea ever, EVER for a totally unique to Dayton hashtag that is about to change the landscape and economic development of our entire region!!!!”.

Nah. That’s not how this works. That’s not how any of this works.

“But I am a super special with a unique perspective on our area that no one has ever thought of before. Have you tried talking positively about Dayton?? Gamechanger”.

Take a seat.  Grab a beverage. Then take notes.

“Dude, I really like this area and like to take pictures and / or string words together so maybe I should talk about Dayton”.

Come on in, the water’s fine. Snap, talk, and write until your heart is content. But for the love of all things holy, talk to some people before you try to reinvent the wheel.

 dayton_rocks_sticker-r44b7c3fea4b745a7b9524d67753141e1_v9waf_8byvr_324

“I need to boost my resume and look like I’m making a difference”. It’s cool, there’s room for you and your self-promotion. Just jump on in beside the people already doing the work for the good of the big picture – not just a 6 month project. There are ideas that need a face, need someone with the rockstar mentality, and need someone tenacious enough to be out there waving the flag of (insert cause here). Ask around. There is a 97.9% chance someone is waiting for a “you” for a project that may already be under way.

Well, now what?

I promise, I am not trying to rain on your parade. Or parades. Because there seem to be 746 parades marching to their own band right now. Let’s get the drum majors at least on the same beat. At the very least some semblance of a similar tempo. Keep reading to see where you might fit in here.

“I want to promote events in Dayton / get more exposure for the events I care about / the ones at my business / the ones at non-profits I like / fundraisers I -1want to organize / parties I want to throw.”

Dang it, we love you. Help spread the word, you are awesome. First stop, enter your event on the mostmetro.com event calendar. It’s free. It’s easy. The entire website was created for exactly this purpose. There is so much happening in the Miami Valley. SO.MUCH. This was created as one stop shopping for all events. All sorts of organizations around the area use it as their official calendar. It is referenced by the organizers of the largest events in the area to try to plan around each other. Other websites pull content from the calendar for their stories sometimes, or even to update their own calendars. It’s alllll good. Most Metro knows it, other websites know it, it’s cool and what it was built for. Not being self promoting here, I realize you’re reading this ON Most Metro. Sure, there are gobs of other great things on the site, but the calendar is what it’s all about. It was built for you, and you, and you and even that guy over there to use for this purpose. It was built because as soon as Wilbur & Orville landed their plane, this community realized a need for a big ol’ magic calendar such as this. Ok, not *that* long ago. But about 8 or 9 years ago DMM answered the call of community members and UpDayton attendees and this baby was born. So use the calendar.

n36945691737_5629“I am the voice of a generation. I must use my powers for good.”

Being the voice of a generation is a pretty kickass responsibility. Building & maintaining a website takes the one thing many of us are lacking – time. Consistently putting out fresh content ain’t for the faint of heart. There are several outlets that will be happy to publish your content. It’s a win win. You get to run your big ideas up the flagpole and see if you have what it takes for your movement. You also get the benefit of not carrying that weight by yourself. Obviously, Most Metro is one of them, I’m saying that because here we are. But if you don’t think this is a good fit for you, shoot us an email, we’re happy to point you in the right direction. Yeah, seriously. Another site talking Dayton isn’t competition, just different, and we’re happy to connect you to the best megaphone for your awesome ideas.

“Someone else has a similar idea to my awesome idea, but they are a big jerkface and I don’t want to work with them”.$_35

Been there, done that. The beauty of Dayton is there are a lot of enthusiastic people trying hard to make a difference. These people come in all shapes, sizes, colors, styles, ages, genders, affiliations, cliques, you name it, we’ve got it. The best part? They are all probably more connected than you think and definitely more than willing to help get you connected. Just ask. If you don’t know who to ask, holla in the inbox. If you don’t want to work with so and so, you don’t have to. It’s 7 degrees of Kevin Bacon around here. We’ll get you connected.

“I have created this amazing business / attraction / activity and people should flock here to see it in person”.

Start with the CVB. What the heck is a CVB? Dayton Convention and Visitors Bureau. They reach out to people all around the country to attract people here to our city. You know how you want to tell your friends about Dayton? They do that…but everywhere. Do you know what visitors bring when they come to Dayton? Money that stays in Dayton.

n46609968049_2919

So why is this bloggy article happening? For a hot minute Dayton was in that angsty, emo, “I don’t like myself” mode. We’re coming out of that now and it is in large part to an endless well of good feelings, some hope and the willingness to get out there. We are coming to an interesting point in our resurgence. We want to make it easy for people who aren’t already in the know to find the good stuff happening in the 937. When there is a different hashtag for every little thing, it makes it hard for people to get to the nitty gritty of what we have to offer. Do you know how many people search for #DaytonGoingUpOnATuesday or #DaytonCanadianGeeseHuntersClub or #937islikeheaven, etc. The person who made it and 3 of their friends. Let’s work on simplifying things a little bit. Let’s bring people into the mix before we confuse them. Let’s be accessible and open, rather than like a secret rave with a password. (Do people still have raves? I may have watched too many Stefon SNL sketches). This area is known for its innovation. so let’s innovate strategic ways to collaborate.

It’s Spring, literally and figuratively. We’ve got the UpDayton Summit coming up in April, a time when our city is revived with a new batch of ideas. It’s also almost patio weather. Let’s be honest, there’s something about sitting on a patio in warm weather with some good wine or Bad Juans that makes people get creative. Let’s give these ideas the best chance possible to get off the ground. Part of that means not starting from scratch where it’s not needed. Tap into the resources with an audience. If everyone is re-inventing the wheel, we’re all just rolling around with no where to go unless we find a hill to roll down somewhere. No one wants that.

Before you pay godaddy $12.99 a year, before you try to come up with another way to use some iteration of Dayton DYT D8N in a twitter handle, before you take a big bite out of a bigger project, research what we have and use these to your advantage.

We invite both first time visitors and long time friends to send us photographs taken in the Glen for a chance to be featured in theirr 2016 Wall Calendar.

They are seeking a variety of images that convey the different moods and seasons of Glen Helen—an iced-over spring, a flower or animal only found at a certain time of year, a lush green meadow on a summer day, a foggy morning sunrise in late fall—images that capture what is special about Glen Helen throughout the year.

Proceeds from the calendar sales are a significant annual fundraiser for Glen Helen, contributing to the continued protection and restoration of the Glen Helen Ecology Institute’s 1000-acre nature preserve and the programs of Glen Helen’s Raptor Center, Outdoor Education Center and Trailside Museum.

Entries, including entry forms, must be submitted online by 5 pm on May 30, 2015.

Oberon Ale- A Sign of Spring!

March 23, 2015 By Lisa Grigsby

oberonThe green beer  is gone (for serious beer fans it never crossed our minds) and March 23 marks the annual seasonal release of  Oberon Ale, a wheat ale that has become synonymous with warmer temperatures, the start of spring and the beginning of the Major League Baseball season.  Bell’s Brewery in Kalamazoo, Michigan  brewery starts spring  with the annual release of  kegs of Oberon Ale.

“Consumers see Oberon as an annual sign of spring,” says Rick Lack, executive vice president of Rave Associates, which distributes Bell’s products across southeastern Michigan. “While it is a summer beer by premise, its release date is the single biggest sales push we see for any one item in our industry.”

Lack said the release “is truly a phenomena” based on how excited people are to see it back, year after year.

Lack says Oberon is versatile and appeals to every kind of bar and restaurant in the state. He also considers it a crossover beer that appeals to people who don’t consider themselves craft beer drinkers.

In Dayton, you can stop by Chappy’s Tap Room and Grill at 5pm today for your official taste of spring!  For the first 48 guests who by a 23ox Oberon, you can even keep the official souvenir glass!

Nice And Steady “Pace”: An Interview With Tim Korenich

March 22, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

In a couple of days, singer/songwriter Tim Korenich will pack up his vehicle with his music gear and head back onto the road solo.  He revealed  during our phone conversation that he will be performing to audiences at not only bars, but a variety of house shows that will also feature other  singer/songwriters.  When the performance are over, he will be choosing to sleep on people’s couches and floors instead of forking over money  to stay in a hotel.  While being out on tour, he will engage and interact with some of the most incredible people that want to help.  For example,  Korenich talked about one person in particular during his last tour.  The booker at the place where Korenich performed in Muncie, Indiana  offered him to come stay at his place for the night.  It was pretty common for the booker to allow artists and bands to crash at his place, so they  wouldn’t have to worry about sleeping arrangements.  When Korenich arrived to the housing of the booker, he saw what is common used as the  band room.

“He opened the door to a big room with bunk beds, pull out couch, a couple of little practice amps.  He said the door is open, front door is  unlocked-help yourself,” Korenich recalls.

Accounts like this is just one of many that like Korenich get to experience-and there is no better feeling than that.  This past September, he  released his first EP Change Of Pace.

Growing up in one of the suburbs of Pittsburgh, North Hills, Korenich played in bands throughout his time in high school.  When he attended  Ohio University, he continued performing with several bands.  Although the groups he played in never really took, the aspiration of being a full-  time musician became clearer.  Especially after reading Our Band Could Be Your Life.

“Hearing about Black Flag touring constantly and just scrapping by, but doing it because they loved it.  That kind of stuff really stuck with me, and really made me want to go on tour whenever I was a freshman in high school,” Korenich exclaims.

In his senior year at Ohio, Korenich was fortunate enough to be part of a group of students in the School of Media Arts & Studies that were making short films.  A troupe of 24 students took part in producing/directed the short movie Monhegan Light that took place at Monhegan Island, Maine.  Based on the short story written by author Richard Russo, Monhegan Light tells the story of Hollywood cinematographer Martin.  Out of nowhere, Martin receives a painting that is a panting of his now deceased wife.  He soon discovers who the artist is behind the painting, which leads him to go to Monhegan Island.  While being at the island, Martin will discover the truth, along with finding out details about his wife that he never imagined could be true.  Filmed on location at Monhegan Island for 8 days in early spring of 2013, the 25-minute film is visually beautiful, and the acting is extraordinary.  With the money raised from a successful campaign on Indiegogo, Korenich composed all the music with the movie. In return to getting the opportunity to record what would become the EP Change Of Pace, Korenich cooked all the meals for the crew and actors on set.

“I made some pretty decent meals from time to time,” Korenich said.  “The last night we were there, I got to cook fresh lobster right out of the ocean.”

Each song of the EP Change Of Pace is crafted to indie movie soundtrack perfection with some compelling storytelling.  Soft harmonies, along with Korenich’s deep vocals accompany the pleasing instrumentals are spellbinding.  Korenich nails the tone of each moment that comes along not only in Monhegan Light, but in our everday life.  The 6 songs complement each other with such ease and fluidity.  According to Korenich, the EP title was representative of what was going on during that time in his life.  He was starting to be a solo artist when his previous band The Beauregards decided to cease writing songs.  Another big leap Korenich has taken recently is moving from his hometown to Toledo.  The relocating has proved to be successful as he now getting to work with musicians like Zach Shipps from Electric Six.

As he now goes on his own path of being a full-time musician, the future is bright for Korenich.  Plans to release later this spring the debut LP of Korenich’s What a Weird Thing on vinyl.  A more expansive tour is being worked on, which could possibly have stops ranging to the West Coast.  When he was a freshman in high school, Korenich picked up the book Our Band Could Be Your Life: Scenes from the American Indie Underground, 1981-1991.  The book explored influential bands like Black Flag, The Replacements, Dinosaur Jr. to start paving the way for other alternative/indie rock bands to succeed.  Without having little to no mainstream success, the artists featured in Michael Azerrad’s book found ways to continue making a living as full-time musicians through constant touring and records released on small, regional independent record labels.

It’s good to see that Korenich paid close attention to what was written.

Tim Korenich will be performing at Blind Bob’s Sunday night.  Showtime is 9pm.

Fronana Dessert Treat Kickstarter Launchs Today

March 22, 2015 By Lisa Grigsby

13598_423963377762692_271476462173632430_nRobert Walker had been living on a beer and  pizza diet while making his way through pilot school  and the PT tests were starting to become a struggle.  So he decided to adopt a paleo diet, yet still craved ice cream.  Being a bit of a scientist, he started experimenting, using his love for banana’s as an inspiration.

Walker finished his service to the Air Force in December, is now a South Park resident and has embraced the spirit of invention that is so celebrated in Dayton and has now turned his attention full time to the dessert product he’s crafted.

What he created is an all natural dairy free alternative to ice cream that is made out of bananas! There’s no added sugar or artificial ingredients, made with wholesome and healthy fruit without any fillers like other ice creams. It’s totally gluten free, totally vegan, totally paleo, and according to local reviews,  totally delicious Fronanaa!

But don’t take our word for it, head down to the Black Box Improv Theatre at 518 E. Third Street today and join the celebration that will be the launch for The Fronana Kickstarter.  From 1:30- 3pm you can join the festivities which  will include a Fronana eating contest to win a years supply of Fronana.  If you can’t make it to the kickoff, you’ll  still have a chance to help, just visit the Fronana webiste.10257904_417367551755608_1787748107389798226_n

You may have seen Fronana around town, as Bobby has hooked his cart to his bicycle and been making the rounds, most recently down at the Yellow Cab food truck rally and Saturday night market.  The demand is building for Fronana and next up is a plan to open a Scoop Shop.  Bobby has applied to the Activated Spaces program, and hopes to be successful in that process, which would help him open a downtown shop.  But he’s got plans even bigger than that and talks about getting Fronana on the shelves of Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods.

Local Food Vendors Return To Yellow Cab For Monthly Night Market

March 20, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

Night Market PhotoIn November 2014, The Yellow Cab Building hosted their first “Night Market,” a market spotlighting local farmers, small boutique vendors such as sauce and salsa makers, juice and soda makers and all sorts of delicious goodies.  Folks at The Yellow Cab have decided to make this event a permanent fixture in Downtown Dayton. On Saturday March 21st, The Yellow Cab Building will begin hosting this Night Market on a monthly basis.

“Night Market in November was great for attendees and vendors, and many people asked if we would hold the event weekly.  We’ve decided that a monthly event is the right fit for our space,” Brian Johnson, organizer said. In partnership with local chef and sriracha maker, LeeAnne House, Johnson plans to create this alternative farmers market that he says is like “a Saturday morning farmer’s market combined with an evening at your favorite local brewery.” He says that “By hosting this market at night, we are reaching a new demographic of consumers that might not always get up early on Saturday; additionally, by offering local, craft beer at the event we are encouraging them to stick around a little longer and chat with the unique community of farmers and boutique food vendors.”
There will be a variety of vendors in attendance including;

1. Homefull (daytons homeless advocacy group with a farm!)
2. The Shakery Juice Bar
3. A Bit of a Bite Salsa
4. Chef JC’s (vanilla extracts)
5. Ashley’s Pastry Shop

Take a Magical Trip to Neverland With Dayton Ballet and Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra

March 20, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

Peter_Pan_Ballet_PhilharmonicOn Friday, March 20 at 8 p.m.; Saturday, March 21 at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m.; and Sunday, March 22 at 3 p.m. in the Mead Theater of the Schuster Center, Dayton Ballet, in collaboration with the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, will present Peter Pan, the fourth and final ballet of the 2014-2015 New Horizons Season. This unique presentation with live orchestra is also the fifth performance in the Kettering Health Network SuperPops Series.  The Signature Sponsor for this production is The Miriam Rosenthal Foundation for the Arts, and the Performance Sponsor is Premier Health.  Supporting Sponsors are Enterprise Roofing and Quantech Services, Inc.  The DPAA Innovation Partner is the DP&L Foundation – Powering Innovation in the Performing Arts.

Dayton Ballet’s Peter Pan will feature original choreography by Septime Webre, Artistic Director of The Washington Ballet, under the guidance of Dayton Ballet Artistic Director Karen Russo Burke. For this production of Peter Pan, Dayton Ballet joins forces with Artistic Director and Conductor Neal Gittleman and the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra to present the enchanting score by Carmon DeLeone.  Johanna Bernstein Wilt will be setting this ballet, having previously helped set it in several productions with ballet companies around the country. Dayton Ballet’s Sharon Neumeister will be the Rehearsal Assistant on this production.

The timeless story of Peter Pan extols the virtues of eternal youth, of keeping our childlike wonder, and of not taking the real world too seriously. The story of Peter Pan was written by J.M. Barrie over 100 years ago and has been retold over the years in various formats, from books to movies, from cartoons to musical theatre.  Just this past December the story was retold by NBC as a special live television production of the 1954 musical adaptation of Peter Pan.

Although the story itself has been around for over a century, the ballet version of this classic tale is relatively new.  In 2000, renowned choreographer Septime Webre was commissioned to create a new ballet version of Peter Pan.  Webre set out to design the ballet with two goals in mind. “One was to create a very ‘dancy’ production that would really challenge the dancers and their technique, and the other to connect to audiences of all ages,” said Webre. (www.pghcitypaper.com)

Septime Webre has indeed accomplished these goals in his story ballet version of Peter Pan.  The ballet includes many notable moments set to thrill audience members of any age.  The flying scenes for Peter, Wendy, John and Michael are magical and breath-taking.  There are spectacular solos for Peter and Wendy that are completely captivating, a high-energy opening dance for the Lost Boys, boisterous and bawdy scenes for the Pirates and Wenches, complete with real sword fighting, and a fantastic solo dance by the Crocodile.  This ballet is fun-filled and clever, rich with humor and including witty nods to classic ballets the audience will surely recognize.

“Peter Pan is a highly demanding story ballet that insists on larger-than-life character portrayals,” says Artistic Director Karen Russo Burke.  “The ballet is extremely well-crafted by Septime.  While the dancing is strenuous and intense, the ballet is hysterical and so much fun to perform!”

“Carmon DeLeone’s score for Peter Pan is brilliant, colorful, tuneful music,” adds DPO Artistic Director and Conductor Neal Gittleman.  “You’ll hear a little Prokofiev, a little Bach, a little John Williams, and a lot of wonderful original music, too. There are a lot of notes, but it will also be a lot of fun to play!”

The lively and dynamic dancing from all 19 dancers of Dayton Ballet and from dancers of Dayton Ballet II senior and junior companies, combined with the enchanting score played to perfection by Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, will make for a wonderful night of entertainment in the Schuster Center.

Tickets for Peter Pan range from $23 to $78 and are available at Ticket Center Stage (937) 228-3630 or online at www.daytonperformingarts.org.  Senior, teacher, student, and military discounts are available at the box office. For more information on this production or on other upcoming performances by Dayton Philharmonic, Dayton Opera and Dayton Ballet, visit www.daytonperformingarts.org.

Ponderosa…. and then there was ONE + win a FREE DINNER

March 20, 2015 By Dayton937 26 Comments

The Classic Baked Potato and Chopped Steak from Ponderosa complete with 1980’s garnish

Oh, how the mighty have fallen.

In the 70’s and 80’s you would have had a dozen of Ponderosa Steakhouse restaurants to choose from in the Dayton area. Now there is only one left. The closing of Ponderosa on Airway Rd, means the only location left in Dayton, is in Englewood.  We had been to the Airway restaurant a few times, and decided to trek up into Englewood, holding on to those food memories from the past.

So here we go with our tongue-in-cheek look at Ponderosa.  A nostalgic Food Adventure, without much expectations, other than a walk down memory lane, and some laughs.

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— Located at 602 Taywood Rd, The next closest Ponderosas are at Tri County Mall in Cincinnati, and South High Street in Columbus.  There are 9 Ponderosas within a 500 mile radius of Dayton.  They are located in Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky.

— Known as a family friendly steakhouse, this place is a throwback to the 1970’s, but is pretty much a buffet today.  Now, before you cross your arms and frown like a spoiled brat, only child over the word buffet, give it a chance.  There are even sneeze guards, a taco bar, and a couple of soups.  Oh, and the wings on the bar are reminiscent of KFC.

The only Dayton area Ponderosa left is this location in Englewood

— The menu still remains mostly unchanged from the 70’s and 80’s, even the salad and dessert bar.  See this 80’s commercial: click here.  or how about this commerical with Centerville resident Jerry Office.

— What you wont see are the metal plates and metal rails in the cafeteria style of yesteryear.  Also gone are the bumpy top signature dinner rolls.  They have been replaced with soft dinner rolls.

— The food is better than you would think.  It is a good deal for the money, but the people watching is priceless.  Also, the food per dollar ratio is high.  People at this location are polite, we didn’t have to sword fight like Indigo Montoya with tongs at the food troughs.  However, the place gets a little crowded and noisy.

There are a couple “MUST EATS” and you need to get the salad bar and dessert bar with your meal.  We think this is a forced choice anyways.  So, if your calorie counter spouse or boyfriend/girlfriend starts whining, tell them they aren’t exactly in good shape or athletic enough to give you grief.

MUST EATS:

 — RIBEYE STEAK MEAL: The most popular item on the menu is a classic from back in the day.  It’s not the Pine Club, but it’s not like the meat has jockey marks on it.  We found the steaks to be almost exactly the same as the 70’s and 80’s.  Which means you might have to deal with some grisle, valley girl.  All in all, not bad.

The Seafood Feast with Salmon was a pleasant surprise

— CHOPPED STEAK MEAL:  Big Ragu’s favorite is this classic adult meal, which is really a “kiddie meal.”  Let’s be honest, it is just a burger without the bun.  But it’s not bad, especially if you use some A1 or Ponderosa Steak sauce, which is strangely close to Heinz 57 steak sauce.  Another tip: You may want to get the Cheeseburger meal which is almost the same thing, except the bun, cheese and bacon option. “The King” tore it up, and liked it.

— SEAFOOD FEAST WITH SALMON:  This meal came like a bat outta hell from nowhere and surprised us.  The salmon tasted good, and the fried shrimp was respectable.  The shrimp skewer has that Ponderosa grill flavor as well.  Definitely the dark horse of the menu.

In the mood for a throwback? A nostalgic walk down memory lane, and are you starving?  Then consider Ponderosa, the dying breed of buffet steakhouses with only one location hanging on.  Hanging on for 50 years that is.  They have over 40,000 fans on Facebook, so somebody loves this place.

Dessert bar anyone ????

The restaurant stays busy, from humming seniors with walkers to unsupervised kids, it is never a dull moment.  But actually… the food may surprise you a bit.

*** Let’s celebrate Ponderosa’s 50th year in business.. If you comment below on why you love Ponderosa, one lucky winner will win a romantic dinner with the Food Adventures Crew at the Englewood location.  Good luck, one winner will be chosen next week at random, one comment only per person, please.  See you at the ranch…

Food Truck Rally Season Kicks Off Friday

March 19, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

206922_392272914225975_1303744355_n-21Nothing says spring like dining outside! And this year, the first day of spring is being ushered in by the return of  two Food Truck Rallies in the region.

On Friday March 20th  Town and Country Shopping Center in Kettering will host the Dayton Food Truck Association‘s rally from 11am until 8pm.  Street eats will be available from Hunger Paynes, Horseless Buggy, PA’s Pork, Lilia’s Outdoor Cafe, Mohawk Freestyle Grill, Alien Infusions, Hunger Paynes, Mobile Cold Stone Creamery.

These wandering restaurants full of delicious and diverse chef-made wonders are  also converging at The Yellow Cab Building on March 20th, and every third Friday throughout the summer and fall from 5-10pm  Scheduled to be on site Friday are Harvest Mobile Cuisine, Voodoo Taco Company, Ramen Rickshaw, The Shakery Juice Bar, Smokin BeeBeeq, “Eat” food truck and Fronana!.

“It’s a unique way for customers to support independent small business. Across the country, there is a trend for potential restaurateurs to test a concept in a food truck before investing in a stand alone building. Food trucks are a first step for many people to realize their dream of owning a restaurant,” organizer Brian Johnson said.

In addition to being able to support local food trucks, attendees will be supporting a community of businesses. “The Yellow Cab has always collaborated with small businesses, and the food truck rallies allow us to go beyond just serving food. We’ll have everything from cupcake bakers, to bottled HouseMade Sriracha, to local craft breweries such as Yellow Springs Brewery, Toxic and Warped Wing.

New this year at the Yellow Cab Truck  will be the addition of a movie to the food truck rally.  “We’ll be hosting a screening of ‘Chef’ at 7:30pm. It’s a great film that highlights the struggles and rewards of owning a small business through the lens of a Food Truck operator. It’s very inspiring and relevant to what we are trying to accomplish at The Yellow Cab,” continued Johnson.

To keep track of where to find food trucks in the Miami Valley, be sure and check the DMM Food Truck Listings.
