Luxury real estate is its own niche market, something most of us will only ever dream about. But it is still fascinating and a lot of fun to look at pictures, isn’t it? Everybody loves real estate porn. Dadaviz is a site that takes information and turns it into visually appealing and easy to understand infographics. Young Performers Stage an Adventure at The Human Race’s Summer Theatre Camp

March 17, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

SSK-Midas-photo-1The Human Race Theatre Company has opened registration for its June 2015 Summer Stock KIDS summer theatre camp for children ages 8 – 13.

A two-week program lead by Jene Rebbin Shaw, the Summer Stock KIDS camp teaches children how to develop many aspects of a play, including sets, costumes and props, all with the help of K12 Gallery for Young People. Campers rehearse daily, preparing for a performance in front of family and friends. This summer, the children will be performing The Adventures of Rose Red (SnowWhite’s Less-Famous Sister) by Sean Abley.

Camp dates are Mondays through Fridays, June 8 – 19 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Performances of The Adventures of Rose Red are Saturday, June 20 at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Daily classes and performances are held at The Caryl D. Philips Creativity Center at 116 North Jefferson Street in downtown Dayton. The Early Bird fee for Summer Stock KIDS is $395.00 per student if paid by May 15, and $425.00 after May 15.

Rose-Red-title-artAbout The Adventures of Rose Red (Snow White’s Less-Famous Sister)
Cinderella, Jack, Snow White, Prince Charming and Goldilocks all go into the woods to see their happy endings. But what happens next? How does fame and fortune get in the way of simple happiness? Many of your favorite characters find their stories tangled together as they try to find ways to celebrate their fame, but strive to live a “normal life.” Speaking of fame, what about Rose Red, Snow White’s less-famous sister? Rose has just turned 13 and is wondering what kind of life she will lead in the shadow of her well-known sister. This modern day fairy tale—complete with trendy teenage dialogue and I-Mirrors instead of I-Phones (And, oh! The spiders and frogs!)—explores the true meaning of “happily ever after.”

Registration and Scholarship Information

Registrations for Summer Stock KIDS are being accepted now. There are a limited number of partial scholarships available for qualifying families in need, made possible by the Frank M. Tait Foundation. Registration and more information can be found on The Human Race Theatre Company’s website at www.humanracetheatre.org/summerstock.php or by contacting Education Director Marilyn Klaben at 937-461-3823 ext. 3132 or [email protected].

Golden Globe Winner LEVIATHAN Opens March 20th at THE NEON!

March 17, 2015 By Jonathan McNeal

leviathan_poster1Hello Everyone,

Even though WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS and THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL are performing well enough to stick around, we’re still going to throw something new into the mix for a handful of screenings. LEVIATHAN is one of the best reviewed films we’ve shown in a long time, and it was the winner of this year’s Golden Globe for “Best Foreign Language Film.” For this week’s remaining showtimes (they’re different than the upcoming week – which are listed below), please visit our website at www.neonmovies.com

Synopsis for LEVIATHAN: “Kolia lives in a small town near the Barents Sea in North Russia. He has his own auto-repair shop. His shop stands right next to the house where he lives with his young wife Lilya and his son from a previous marriage. Vadim Shelevyat, the Mayor of the town, wants to take away Kolia’s business, his house and his land. First he tries buying off Kolia, but Kolia cannot stand losing everything he has, not only the land, but also all the beauty that has surrounded him from the day of his birth. So Vadim Shelevyat starts being more aggressive.” (taken from Sony Classics) Click this LINK to visit the film’s official site.

Last weekend’s special screening of TWO HEARTS AS ONE was a huge, sold-out success – puncuated with a big round of applause. Because of the demand for tickets, The Turkish American Society of Dayton has added another screening this Sunday at 3:00. Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased now at our box office. “This powerful film – one of the most expensive productions in Turkish film history – is based on a true story. Starting in 1940’s Soviet Russia, and continuing into 1990’s, this is the story of four hearts which couldn’t be stopped by distances and years. …Presented in Turkish, with English subtitles.” (Taken from press notes) Check out the trailer below. The film is lovely!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=154LpFZZBnI

Don’t forget that THE REEL PADDING FILM FESTIVAL is just a couple days away – this Thursday at 7:30. Click the official link or visit our box office to get your advanced tickets. (And I just got the inside scoop. Attendees over 21 will be treated to a free beer!)

On Wednesday, March 25, The Alumni Chair in Humanities at UD will present special screenings of Stanley Kubrick’s classic film PATHS OF GLORY – starring Kirk Douglas. Dr. Tony Smith will introduce the award-winning film, and the screenings are free for UD faculty, staff and students. Tickets for the general public are available for a suggested donation of $5. Seating will be on a first come, first serve basis. The movie will screen at 7:30 and 9:30. The presentation of this film is part of the World War I cohort project at UD.

Every year when I come back from The Toronto International Film Festival, people ask me how hard it is to get tickets and participate. While anyone can go to TIFF, so many people don’t realize that there’s an incredible, well-respected film festival just a few hours away. The Cleveland International Film Festival has grown and grown over the years, and I’ll be attending the final 5 days of the festival next week. That said, the festival starts tomorrow evening. Check out the official website to see just how impressive it really is.

Thanks for your continued support.
See you soon,

Jonathan

Kate Evans, Founder and CEO of Your Social Status, LLC. She has built this business from the ground up, using her passion for social media and

Growing up in Miamisburg, Kate attended Alter High School and earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Wright State University. Her degree was Science in Organizational Leadership, but her minor in marketing sparked in interest in the social media field when working for Towne Properties after graduating. She noticed a lack of marketing in the social media aspect for the company, and began to spearhead this for all of their apartment communities.

Kate ran Your Social Status as a single consultant while also contracting with 3M and Aveda. After moving several times across the country for contracting jobs (including stints in Texas and Florida), Kate decided to open her own social media marketing business in her hometown.

This presented a challenge. The contract work would have to be dropped in order to make Your Social Status a full time career. Without any income from contracting on the side, she formed an LLC that she wanted to build to help local companies. Her client base has grown, and she had added several employees to her lineup in the past four years.

Your Social Status continues to grow, while Kate continues to host training courses for business owners locally and online, writing for magazines, and speaking at national conferences. She remains local, as she has married a fellow Alter graduate, Chris Evans, and is expecting her first baby boy.

Kate enjoys her membership with WiBN, and wants to be an example for young women who want to be in business. She keeps this in mind when she hires, mentors, and works with other professionals. ArriveSafe Program Offers Free Cab Rides For St. Patrick’s Day Partiers

March 17, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

freecabrideMontgomery County Prosecuting Attorney Mat Heck, Jr. is pleased to announce that with support from Heidelberg Distributing Company and AAA Miami Valley, ArriveSafe will once again be offering free cab rides home for Montgomery County residents this St. Patrick’s Day.

Since Prosecuting Attorney Mat Heck, Jr. started ArriveSafe in December 2007, ArriveSafe has provided over 4,400 free cabs rides for Montgomery County residents. Removing just one impaired driver from the streets may save a life – maybe even your own.

Last year there were 37 fatal traffic crashes in Montgomery County – over half were alcohol related, and there were an additional 239 alcohol related traffic crashes in which someone was seriously injured. Literally every one of these crashes and fatalities were avoidable – if only the driver had made the responsible CHOICE to not drink and drive.

ArriveSafe will be offering free cab rides home for Montgomery County residents from 6 p.m. Monday, March 16, 2015 through 6 a.m. Wednesday, March 18, 2015.

Prosecutor Heck said, “This St. Patrick’s Day, have fun but celebrate responsibly – have a designated, sober driver or call ArriveSafe at 449-9999 and request a free ride home. We will pay the cab fare up to $50.”

Halotherapy Yoga Comes To Dayton **Free Class Give Away**

March 15, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

Local Yoga enthusiast Emily Von Stuckrad  hosts private wine and yoga parties, , yoga and chocolate meditations and now introduces us to a a brand new therapy that is making it’s Ohio debut right here in Dayton- Halotherapy.

What is Halotherapy?original

Halotherapy, or salt therapy, is an emerging type of natural therapy in the US.  It is widely popular in European countries, and is gaining popularity in the states.  It is completely natural, drug free, non invasive, and safe for all ages, including children.

The Halotherapy treatment involves relaxing in a room that is encased in salt, and during the treatment a piece of equipment, called a halogenerator, grinds pharmaceutical grade pure salt into fine micro particles, giving them a beneficial negative ion charge, and releases into the salt room.  The salty air delivers the treatment and is what makes halotherapy effective.  The negative ions activate the healing process on a cellular level, helping the body restore itself naturally and effectively.

How is this different from a true salt cave?

The Halogenerator is the single most important part of halotherapy.  While a standard salt cave, natural or engineered, will have tons of beneficial negative ion emitting salt, our halogenerator  provides a more effective treatment in much less time.  We can deliver results more quickly and effectively.
The Centerville Salt Room & Medical Massage offers HalotherapyEnjoy a 1 hour slow-flow yoga practice immersed in halo therapy. For centuries, monks used naturally-occurring salt caverns to treat respiratory ailments. Today, manmade Saltrooms recreate salt caverns, with one huge improvement over nature: in a Halotherapy room, a salt vaporizer pumps dry aerosol salt vapor into the air, so you can breathe it deep into your lungs. This unique practice will leave you feeling refreshed. Bring your own mat and props or feel the salt beneath your feet and practice without. It is truly a one-of-a-kind experience.

Practice will be held at The Centerville Salt Room http://www.thesaltroommassage.com from 6-7pm on Friday, March 20, 2015. For additional information contact Emily at [email protected] or (937)603-9212. Reservations and pre-payment are required.

Try it for FREE Friday, March 20th
DMM will send one lucky winner to a free class – just fill out the form below and leave a comment below on why we should pick you!

Congratulations to our winner:  Michelle Van Huss

A Day of Being Irish

March 14, 2015 By Brian Petro

St. Patrick Icon

The founder of the feast, St. Patrick.

St. Patrick’s Day is a holiday in the United States like no other place in the world. Ireland’s celebrations, while exuberant, are nowhere near what we do here. Ireland has always treated it as a religious holiday, more of a somber time to spend with family and friends. Of course, on the way home if you stop off in the pub for a pint or two, no one is going to say much. In fact, this multi-day religious festival offers a little haven in a sea of Lent; to properly celebrate their patron saint, religious fasting restrictions were lifted and people cut loose. The celebrations have gotten bigger in the last several decades, and they put away 13 million or so pints of Guinness that day and have a few parades, but they are still a long way from what we do here. We hit the party hard from Kegs and Eggs in the morning to checking for Uber at night for a safe ride home. It is a one day blow out that celebrates all things green, orange, and white. The first celebrations in the U.S. were parades that celebrated Irish pride while also fighting for the rights of the Irish in their adopted home. The treatment of the Irish in Gangs of New York is not entirely fictional. But if you are going to hit it hard all day, you may want to mix it up a little. Add some food. Pace yourself. You’ll still have a well-deserved hang over the next day. But first…

BREAKFAST

It has a reputation for being the most important meal of the day for a reason. Getting some food in your stomach right off is going to help you soften the blow of the liquor for a little while. Eggs, rashers (thinly sliced bacon), and toast are a nice way to start. It is lighter that the traditional Irish breakfast (more on that later), but still enough to pad the stomach. Eggs and rashers contain protein to help fight off the toxins, and a chemical called cysteine, which absorb all the nasty toxins that are starting to build in your body. It goes without saying you drink coffee with it, and what better way to start the day than with an Irish Coffee? Not coffee with a little Irish cream, like this was another day at the office. The good stuff.

IRISH COFFEE

1 oz. Irish whiskey
1 tsp brown sugar
4 oz. good coffee
1 oz. whipped cream

Irish Coffee

Good morning! Time to get drinking! (Photo by Andrew Mager)

Warm up a coffee mug with hot water, then dry out the mug. Add brown sugar, Irish whiskey, then coffee, leaving some room to add the whip cream. Stir the ingredients together until the sugar dissolves, than add the whip cream. Let it sit on top, as it keeps the coffee warm.

Most recipes will call for one and a half ounces, but we are starting off light, remember? Of course, if the thought of food only interrupts the buzz you are trying to build, there is another Irish breakfast you can try.

IRISH BREAKFAST

1 part Irish whiskey OR Irish cream
1 part butterscotch schnapps
2 parts orange juice

Mix the Irish liquor of choice and the butterscotch schnapps in one glass, have the orange juice in the other. Drink the shot, then follow it with the orange juice.

LUNCH

Maybe you eat. Maybe you don’t. But you are still drinking with the best of them. If you are going traditional, you are waiting 119 seconds for a perfect pour of Guinness at The Dublin Pub, Harrigan’s, Murphy’s, Paddy’s, Flanagan’s Pub, or any of the other bars in town that are pulling pint properly. If you are not a dark beer fan, Bass is a delightful pale ale that will satisfy your thirst just as well. Smithwick’s red ale splits the difference nicely, with some of the roast notes from the stout and the lightness of the pale ale. Harp has been the traditional lager of Ireland, but Guinness released a Blonde Lager last September to compete with it. Even though Harp is their lager they created in the 1960’s. Any way you slice it, there is a traditional Irish beer for any palate. If you are not a Guinness person, you can still enjoy a Guinness by floating it on a variety of other lagers or ales. Black and tans, the most well-known of the layered Guinness drinks, start with a layer of Bass and finish it off by pouring the

Guinness over a spoon. The spoon (or other similar device) modulates the flow of the Guinness, slowing its impact on the liquid in the glass to create the sharp cut we are accustomed to. It is all about the liquid density, ladies and gentlemen. While Guinness has a dark color, that is about the only thing heavy about it. It floats nicely on a wide variety of other beers like Blue Moon (Eclipse), Newcastle Brown Ale (Black Castle), or any hard cider (Snake Bite).

While we are discussing hard ciders, they are a well-loved in the British Isles. Cider was not terribly hard to make; leave some apple juice alone in a dark place for a while, and it will turn itself into an alcoholic version of its former self. The Celts were enjoying this before the islands they lived on were British (or even Roman), and it has been a staple drink ever since. One of the best-selling hard ciders on the Emerald Isle is Bulmers, better known in the rest of the world as Magners. American ciders have come a long way since super sweet Woodchuck dominated the scene in the 1990’s. Crispin and Angry Orchard have produced a variety of hard ciders that are less sweet and tarter, like a good cider should be. Woodchuck has come around in recent years, creating ciders with a much more traditional flavor. And for those of you who love hops, Woodchuck even has a dry hopped cider, Hopsation.

In case you did not notice, I have not mentioned green beer. There is a good reason for that.

DINNER

You REALLY need to put something in your stomach at this point. It is entirely possible you have been drunk, sobered up, and now are working your way back to drunk at this point. You green hat is sitting a little crooked on your head, and you probably freshen up your green and orange make up a little. When you are ready for dinner, and still feeling very Irish, you’ll order up the corned beef and cabbage. Half of that meal is traditional for the Irish. Cabbage has been a staple in Ireland for a very long time. Corned beef has not. Remove the nicely sliced corned beef and add the rashers, and you now have a meal that the Irish would love. Add some soda bread, and you have another liquor-absorbing meal to get you ready for the home stretch. A boxty, a potato pancake filled with meat and vegetables, would also be wonderful at this point of the day.

Redbreast 12 Year

It is getting a little late. Time for a nightcap.

How about a nightcap? You’ve had your fill of beer by this point; relax, enjoy the bands, and have some Irish whiskey. It is nice to sip either neat or on the rocks, and is milder than other whiskies. Jameson is the most recognized brand of Irish whiskey, but it is not the only one. Green Spot, if you can find it, is widely recognized as one of the best new Irish whiskies to hit the United States in years. Redbreast is a light and complex whiskey, great for sipping neatly. Bushmills offers a delightful line of whiskeys as well, with a little something for everyone in their portfolio. Tullamore DEW is another lesser known but well respected Irish whiskey to be discovered on this most Irish of holidays. Powers, one of the most popular whiskies in Ireland, is also a lesser known and underrated option for your day of drinking. The Irish don’t seem to really mix their whiskey into anything fancy, other than the coffee or tea most people are familiar with.

THE NEXT DAY

You already know it is going to be a rough one. Let’s hope you drank plenty of water while you were out drinking to minimize the effects of the drinking. Maybe, if you believe it works, have a few aspirin before bed, a bottle of Gatorade or Powerade, and just hope the hangover is not THAT bad. There are two traditional cures the Irish use. The first one is a bit impractical; head up to the Great Miami River with a friend and a shovel. Dig a hole, hop into it, and bury yourself up to the neck in the soft sands of the bank. That is going to be EXTREMELY cold and fairly inconvenient, so let us suggest a second option: a full Irish breakfast. This has a little bit of everything for you: sausage, rashers, black and white pudding, fried eggs, baked beans, thick bread, and some tomatoes. That will fill you up AND take a little edge off the hangover. Add some black coffee, and you will be ready to head back to work. Just leave the Irish whiskey out of the coffee. You swore you’d never drink again last night, remember? Sláinte!

Drive Thru Pizza Hits Dayton

March 12, 2015 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Brew & Brews Drive Thru, now serves Fresh, NY Style Pizza

Brew & Brews Drive Thru, now serves Fresh, NY Style Pizza

You may have seen the new Brew & Brews Drive Thru that popped up on 741 across from Home Depot.  They have the usual drive thru fare, such as beer, wine, pop, chips and candy.  But did you know there is now a full blown pizzeria inside as well?  Yes !  The addition is called B & B Slices.   Now you can get whole pizzas or slices on the go.   Whether customers call ahead or just swing by, B&B is sure to have something freshly made to please your pizza cravings.

Yes, a Food Adventure in your car !

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— The drive-thru joint is called B & B Slices and is located at 326 N. Springboro Pike in Miamisburg.

— B & B Slices owners are Johnny and Michele Rivera former owners of Johnny’s Slice of NY Pizza.  So, if are fans of that place, you can expect the same New York style pizzas.

— Other items available include 3 ingredient calzones for $6 and subs for $6.50.

— Everything is produced with fresh dough, made daily by Johnny himself.

— They have not set firm hours yet, but we assume roughly 11:30-7pm is when you can expect  the saucy, cheesy goodness of B&B Slices.

MUST EATS:

New York Style Slices – We prefer Pepperoni or Cheese

— SLICE OF PEPPERONI PIZZA: The hallmark, the flagship if you will.  These New York Style slices are a great bite on the go, and a match made in drive thru heaven.  The slices are big enough to curb your hunger, but wont stuff you.  Fold the slice, take a bite and get your craving in a drive-by.

— CALZONES: Homemade, handmade and perfectly made with fresh dough.  Pick your favorite 3 ingredients, and get afork for some marinara dipping action.  One of the best in the land.

— WHOLE PIES: Load up the toppings or keep it simple with just cheese, you can’t go wrong with a B & B pizza.  If you are feeling really hungry, order one of their signature Brooklyn Brawler Pizzas, which is a mammoth stuffed crust style pizza.

Our Food Adventures Crew love fresh, original ideas like this one.  The dough is just as fresh as the concept, and Chef House, The Big Ragu, The King & Hungry Jax are suckers for fresh dough.  So the next time you are driving down 741 with a little hunger pain, you might want to drive through Brew and Brews for a slice of paradise.

Remember, we are not food critics, we just love to eat !

March 11, 2015 By Lisa Grigsby

DigitalAssests-fleurs-06The original “Party in the Park” was the brain child of two friends, Vail Miller Sr. of Heidelberg and Mike Frank of Arrow Wine.  With a mission of bringing wine out of just the wine cellars and  to the general public, the idea of a wine festival was born.  Now 24 years later, Fleurs et Vin is the most anticipated, talked about and attend wine event in the Miami Valley.

Last year there were over 420 wines for sampling, as well as a  beer garden featuring Belgium brews.  Wines and beer selections for this year are still being put together.   And if that isn’t enough to keep you busy,  J.t. Fedrick and his band  will be in full swing, the dance floor open and wonderful baskets available for bidding in the silent auction.  And come 4pm, the best entertainment of the day can often be found at the live auction, where thousands of dollars are raised in just minutes iwth the sale of wine collectibles, with proceeds benefiting AIDS Resource Center Ohio.  If you’d like to support the even with a donation to the auction  you can start that process with this online donation form.

WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS – From FLIGHT OF CONCHORDS Creators – Opens Friday!

March 10, 2015 By Jonathan McNeal

What-We-Do-in-the-Shadows-1Hello Everyone,

If you still need to see MR. TURNER or STILL ALICE, you’ll need to hurry. Thursday will be the last chance to catch them at THE NEON. (For this week’s showtimes, please visit our website at www.neonmovies.com.) Of course we’ll certainly be holding onto THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL! Many thanks to all of you who came out to support this film during opening weekend. We had the best results in town, and we couldn’t do it without such a great, loyal following. Thank you!

On Friday, we will open a new comedy that’s in the same “vein” as SPINAL TAP and BEST IN SHOW. It’s an award-winning vampire mockumentary called WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS, and critics and audiences alike have been loving it.

Synopsis for WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS: “WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS chronicles the adventures of four vampire roommates trying to get by in a modern world that’s not always hospitable to the undead. Clement and Waititi, creators of the HBO hit series “Flight of the Conchords,” co-wrote, co-directed, and co-star in this hilarious send-up in which an endearingly unhip quartet of friends reveal to us or, rather, to the documentary crew that’s filming them, the details of their daily-make that nightly-routine. Ranging in age from 183 to 8,000, and in appearance from adorably youthful to Nosferatu-crusty, they squabble over household chores, struggle to keep up with the latest trends in technology and fashion, antagonize the local werewolves, cruise clubs for lovely ladies, and deal with the rigors of living on a very, very strict diet.” (taken from Paladin) Click this LINK to visit the film’s official site.

“This Sunday at 3:00, The Turkish American Society is proud to present a special, one-time screening of director Hasan Kiraç’s TWO HEARTS AS ONE (Birlesen Gönüller). This powerful film – one of the most expensive productions in Turkish film history – is based on a true story. Starting in 1940’s Soviet Russia, and continuing into 1990’s, this is the story of four hearts which couldn’t be stopped by distances and years. Newlyweds Niyaz and Cennet are forced to separate when war rears a violent and chaotic head. Niyaz is taken to Red Army to fight on the Soviet side, while Cennet is sent to a camp when the Nazis took over their village…Woven into the narrative is the story of Yunus and Dilek, a loving couple from Turkey who leave for Almaty, then the capital of Kazakhstan, in the 1990’s. Ambitious Yunus is planning to build a school, but he has no resources at all. His wife Dilek sympathizes and supports him, but their enduring poverty wears her patience and resolve – until a chance encounter provides some much-needed perspective. Tickets for this special event are $10 and are now available at THE NEON’s box office. Presented in Turkish, with English subtitles.” (Taken from press notes) Check out the trailer. It looks lovely! Tickets are going quickly!

Review Roundup – Friendships & Feuds

March 8, 2015 By Russell Florence, Jr.

In the mood for sketch comedy, musical theater or classic drama? Here’s a rundown of a few offerings currently on local stages.

parallel lives

Gina Handy and Andrea Morales in “Parallel Lives” (Contributed photo)

PARALLEL LIVES

Magnolia Theatre Company, a professional theater troupe, joins Dayton’s budding arts scene with a terrific production of Mo Gaffney and Kathy Najimy’s two-hander sketch comedy “Parallel Lives” inside the Mathile Theatre of the Schuster Center.

The brainchild of founding artistic director Gina Handy, Magnolia Theatre Company, established in Pennsylvania in 2012, is dedicated to producing fresh, funky and feminine plays incorporating female actors, technicians and administrative staff. “Parallel Lives,” a smart, thought-provoking account of modern life told from the female perspective notably filmed by HBO in 1991, is the epitome of the organization’s creed because it embraces the wonders of womanhood with tremendous feminist spunk. At the same rate, the play examines love, truth, communication, friendship, performance art, sisterly strife, and more with an impactful, gleeful purpose that doesn’t ostracize the male audience.
Gaffney and Najimy’s 11 flavorful skits, a playground of possibilities deftly staged by Marya Spring Cordes particularly encompassing ruminations on “West Side Story” and a comical support group for Disney moms, are superbly inhabited by Handy and Andréa Moralés in their local acting debuts. Portraying multiple characters, male and female, this colorfully energetic duo impresses with transformative finesse. Handy is very touching as an elderly aunt discovering her nephew is gay, but she is also a genuine laugh riot as Southern cornball Hank, who only has a few pick-up lines to his credit which he doesn’t mind incessantly repeating at his favorite bar. The dazzling Moralés, displaying great physicality, utilizes her chameleon strengths in the funny, tender “Three Sisters,” and marvelously interprets the mundane morning grind in the exceptionally expressive “Silent Torture” set to the brisk music of Georges Bizet.

Presented under the auspices of the Victoria Theatre Association’s formerly dormant ImPACt program, Magnolia Theatre Company isn’t planning to produce another show until next season. Even so, I eagerly anticipate its return.

“Parallel Lives” concludes March 8 at 2 p.m. in the Mathile Theatre of the Schuster Center, Second and Main Streets, Dayton. The play is performed in 100 minutes without intermission. Tickets are $20. Call Ticket Center Stage at (937) 228-3630 or visit www.ticketcenterstage.com. The production will also be performed March 26 and 27 at the Garden Theatre of Short North Stage in Columbus. For more information about Magnolia, visit www.magnoliatheatrecompany.com

spelling bee

THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE

Playhouse South delivers a thoroughly charming and entertaining presentation of composer William Finn, librettist Rachel Sheinkin and conceiver Rebecca Feldman’s 2005 musical comedy “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.”
Casting is paramount to the success of this witty and tender show, which contains some of Finn’s most vibrant, beautiful melodies. Director Carrie Thurston assembles a winning cast who pours equal amounts of zaniness and warmth into engaging, relatable characters that are more than mere kooky caricatures. In particular, the six actors who must be believable as smart-mouthed, fiercely competitive, highly peculiar, and emotionally scarred kids absolutely hit the mark.

Brett Norgaard (Chip Tolentino/Jesus Christ), Meagan Kuchan (Logainne Schwartzandgrubenniere), Jose Gutierrez del Arroyo (Leaf Coneybear/Carl Dad), Bobby Escamillia (William Barfee), Caitie Erker (Marcy Park), and Megan Weyrauch (Olive Ostrovsky) are a delightfully humorous bunch. Bolstered by Annette Looper’s energetic choreography and smoothly handling crucial audience participation (audience volunteers join the actors onstage), they cohesively work together to make the comedy sparkle, an important attribute that keeps the focus from tilting toward one character or characters. Still, it’s imperative to point out how distinctive they are as individuals as evidenced in Norgaard’s comical agony, Kuchan’s unyielding perseverance, Gutierrez del Arroyo’s outstanding intertwining of hilarity and heartbreak, Escamillia’s oddball agitation, Erker’s disgust, and Weyrauch’s endearing sensitivity. Also, Kristen Danley (as bee coordinator Rona Lisa Perretti/Olive’s Mom), Steve Voris (Vice Principal Douglas Panch) and Michael Shannon (comfort counselor Mitch Mahoney/Dan Dad/Olive’s Dad) provide solid support. The lovely Danley and vocally strong Shannon join Weyrauch for a stirring rendition of the gorgeous “I Love You Song,” a fantastic, dreamlike sequence centered on Olive and her parents which fittingly reminds how vital the presence of a supportive parent is to a child’s well-being.

“The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” continues through March 15 at Playhouse South located in the Clark Haines Theatre (Kettering Board of Education Building) 3750 Far Hills Ave., Kettering. Performances are Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. Act One: 50 minutes; Act Two: 45 minutes. Tickets are $13 for adults, $11for seniors and military and $8 for students. desire

The cast of “Desire Under the Elms” (Contributed photo)

DESIRE UNDER THE ELMS

The Dayton Theatre Guild’s valiant attempt at Eugene O’Neill’s 1924 drama “Desire Under the Elms” feels stiff, awkwardly paced and conceptually askew.

Directed by Craig Smith, the dysfunctional, soap opera-esque “Elms” moves to a frustrating rhythm as engrossing themes of betrayal, greed, jealousy, lust, pride, and vengeance intermingle unevenly in three acts. A constant flow of sturdy moments followed by weaker moments hinders the allure of this forgotten tragedy about a rural New England family dismantled by the new bride of its patriarch.

Smith significantly acquires three convincing leading players, but I wonder if the production, in dire need of scene transition music to sustain momentum, would have benefitted from a completely different artistic approach. Instead of a literal mounting that adheres to the material’s melodrama and extraneous ensemble, perhaps a darker, minimalist, scaled down take would have given the action a more compelling immediacy or contemporary sting. Also, the pretty exterior of the Cabot family farmhouse (the largest set built at the Guild’s new space courtesy of designer Fred Blumenthal) could have been replaced by projections. The farmhouse satisfies visually but forces Smith into producing cumbersome blocking, especially for audiences unfamiliar with the play’s intricacies.

Nonetheless, Dave Nickel (as hardnosed patriarch Ephraim), Alexander Chilton (as Ephraim’s conflicted, haunted and distraught son Eben), and Danielle Dawler (as Ephraim’s treacherous young wife Abbie) give completely committed portrayals. Nickel, furious and harsh, excellently interprets Ephraim’s monologue reflecting on the history of the farm, a former “field of stones.” He also gives credence to Ephraim’s laughably clueless inability to recognize Abbie and Eben are infatuated with each other. Chilton, delivering a remarkable breakdown in Act 2, and Dawler, fiercely manipulative and an effective emotional wreck in Act 3, are compatible lovers although I prefer “Elms” served passionately unbuttoned. Oddly, skin is not in, which seems disingenuous considering the first word in the title. The cast includes Mark Anderson (Simeon), Adam Clevenger (Peter), William Styles (Sheriff/Old Farmer), Rick Flynn (Fiddler father), Alex Bindemann (Fiddler), Breanna Caron (Young Girl), Harry Shepard (Man), and Sarah Saunders (Woman).

“Desire Under the Elms” continues through March 15 at the Dayton Theatre Guild, 430 Wayne Ave., Dayton. Performances are Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 5 p.m., and Sunday at 3 p.m. The production lasts two hours and includes two intermissions. Patrons are advised the play contains mature themes. Tickets are $19 for adults, $17 for seniors and $12 for students. Call (937) 278-5993 or visit www.daytontheatreguild.org
