menopause-musical-survivor-tour-57Menopause The Musical is set in a department store where four women at a lingerie sale have nothing in common but a black lace bra AND memory loss, hot flashes, night sweats, not enough sex, too much sex and more! Singing along to classic tunes from the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s, the cast forms a sisterhood with the entire audience. Whether naturally occurring or thrust into as a result of cancer treatment, Menopause The Musical helps women embrace and celebrate that menopause is no longer “The Silent Passage.”

“GFour Productions is happy to partner with Susan G. Komen® to raise important awareness, while proving that laughter truly is the best medicine,” said producer Kathi Glist.

For more than a decade, Menopause The Musical has worked to inspire and support women dealing with life after “The Change.” “Menopause has always been a cause-based show,” said Menopause The Musical Director Seth Greenleaf. “The cause was helping women see that what they are experiencing is perfectly normal, and that they are not alone. The Susan G. Komen partnership increases the importance of our purpose because now we’re not just talking about life affirming, but life saving.  We’re deeply proud to be a part of this effort.”

Menopause The Musical is recognized as the longest-running scripted musical production in Las Vegas and continues to entertain nightly at Harrah’s. Ohio Whiskey Society Meets

November 18, 2015 By Lisa Grigsby

logo-1The very first meeting on the Dayton chapter of the Ohio Whiskey Society will meet this Thursday night from 6:30-8:30pm in Oakwood overlooking Main St. (2310 Far Hills Ave in the office above the UPS store).  With a line up of 5 Whiskeys & Bourbons on the docket including Maker’s Mark, Monkey Shoulder & Chivas Regal, The tasting is being coordinated by Mike Smith.  Tickets are $20 and can be purchased online.

We asked Mike about this group:
Where did the idea for the Ohio Whiskey Society come from?
The idea came from a desire to enjoy great whiskey and great company.  I really like to try a variety of whiskeys so I thought why not start a club where whiskey enthusiest, like myself, can get together and try new stuff on a regular basis.

Will this be a membership group?
If so, what does it take to join and what are the benefits?
I think it will become a membership group down the road. More details to come..

How often do you envision meeting?
I would like to see us get together on a monthly basis with a new flight of whiskeys & an expanding community to drink it.

If folks can’t make this Thursday’s event when will the next one be?
We will try to get together again before the New Year.  Like us on Facebook for updates.

Fitness advice for Thanksgiving: Just be a grownup.

November 18, 2015 By Jason Harrison

With the Thanksgiving holiday rapidly approaching, I thought it wise to address a stubborn myth about health living, which is that one must be obnoxious about their food choices as guests in other people’s homes or during holidays. My advice? Eat well, but have some manners.

Don’t show up at grandma’s house with your own bag of food. Don’t skip the office holiday party because there’s going to be a lot of pie. Don’t make faces when the composition of the menu at dad’s house isn’t what you would like it to be. There’s a word for people who do these things. I think you all know what that word is.

WP_20151110_014

I can’t imagine living a life in which I couldn’t have a piece of pecan pie with my dad while talking football at Thanksgiving. We’re human beings, not animals. Food isn’t just about feeding our bodies. Preparing a meal for others, or eating a meal as an invited guest, is an act of love and companionship. Your relationships with the ones you love are as important to your health as anything else you do, including the food you eat and the exercise you do. You work against both human nature and good manners when you adopt an air of condescension and restriction at the communal table.

What to do then, if you’re at a table without vegetables, or in a room full of delicious pies, or in the living room when your slightly buzzed uncle starts talking politics?

You do the best you can. Just like you should every day.

  1. Load your plate up with vegetables first. This will serve as an automatic portion control mechanism.
  2. No, or few vegetables? I’d err on the side of protein (like turkey) and limit the amount of starchy carbs (like mashed potatoes).
  3. Put down your fork in between each bite. Pay attention to the conversation around you. Listen to the person with whom you’re speaking. Don’t anticipate what you’re going to say. Just listen. Be thankful for the time you’re allowed to spend with a loved one. (The science linking gratitude to health is increasingly strong and convincing).
  4. Never, ever, drink with the intention of getting drunk. Not only will you end up acting a fool, but you’ll also probably eat a lot more. Yes, your ultra-lefty cousin is home from college and she’s telling you all about how you should be composting. And your super duper conservative childhood neighbor has some questionable views on diversity. But you’re a grownup, aren’t you? Drink like a gentleman. Consume wine like a grown woman. If you don’t like the conversation you’re in, politely excuse yourself and find a better one.
  5. When it’s time for dessert, try to eat in a room without a television. Hopefully you’re in a home with good taste in coffee, so they’ve served you a fresh cup of Wood Burl from Press in the Oregon District. Sip your coffee, eat your pumpkin pie. Again, put your fork down in between each bite. Listen to the conversation. Taste the pie. Smell the coffee. Be aware. Be present.

You’re going to be reading a lot of “surviving the holidays” fitness articles in the coming weeks. Few of them will focus on the idea of acting like a dignified human being and practicing the art of conversation. But a healthy lifestyle is a holistic lifestyle in which you’re living, loving, cooking, moving, and feeling well. You don’t have to live like a monk. You don’t have to have the discipline of an Olympian. Ultimately, all you have to do is embrace your humanity, treat both the food and your company with respect, and always–always–eat as many vegetables as you can.

Locally Owned Housemade Sauces Introduces Green Sriracha

November 18, 2015 By Dayton937 2 Comments

Locally made Green Serrano Sauce is coming to store near you

Your favorite locally owned hot sauce company, Housemade Sauces, is going GREEN.  Serrano Green that is...  Local Chef LeeAnne House has released some more bottles that she hopes will be as sought after as her previous sauces.  LeeAnne has worked in the food industry her entire life, and comes from a family of restaurant entrepreneurs.  We have the scoop on Chef House and her latest culinary creation.

*** And we are giving a FREE bottle away to a lucky, random reader who comments below ***

HERE’S THE SKINNY on THE NEW SERRANO GREEN HOT SAUCE:

— Serrano peppers, tomatillos and pineapples are the main ingredients for this Serrano Green sauce

— Housemade puts pineapples into a juicer to make this sauce.   Then they boil the sauce to reduce it by half for a thick sauce with a huge punch of flavor.

HERE’S THE SKINNY on CHEF LEEANNE HOUSE:

— A lifelong Daytonian, LeeAnne has worked in restaurants since she was a kid clearing tables.  Her recent past jobs include being an assistant or Executive Chef at a couple of Dayton area, fine dining  establishments and caterers.

— Today, Chef LeeAnne House wears many hats .

1) She is the partner in “Bad Dog, Nice Taco” food and catering.

2) She is part of the popular food blog,  “Food Adventures” featured weekly on Dayton Most Metro.

3) Chef House is also the owner of the wildly popular Housemade Sriracha Sauces.

4) LeeAnne also helps organize the local “Night Market” events at the Old Yellow Cab Building

You can find Housemade Sauces at Dorothy Lane Market, Foremost Seafood,  Treadway Gardens and various local vendors.   Chef House has accomplished a lot in the past 2 to 3 years with her Housemade Sauces.  Here is a breakdown that shows how far she has come, and highlights some of the best products in her inventory.

Chef House cooking up a big batch of her new Green Serrano Sauce

THE HISTORY of HOUSEMADE SAUCES:

— Housemade made a splash in the Dayton area in 2013, with its first sauce, a red sauce, called Housemade Sriracha.  It is a delicious condiment made with red Thai chile peppers.  A sweeter version of the traditional srirachas sold in stores, it quickly sold out on local area shelves.  It won a national sauce competition, winning first place in the 2014 Cajun Hot Sauce Festival of Louisiana.

— In 2014, Chef House then released her second product “HOT HONEY,”  a local honey, infused with red thai chiles.  It was another huge hit regionally.  It also won a competitions, gaining 2014’s Best Hot Specialty at “Jungle Jim’s Weekend of Fire.”

— Housemade also released SPICE RUBS in 2014 partnering with Miami Valley Spice Traders.  The flavors of  Thai chili sriracha rub, tomatillo-serrano salt, smoked sriracha salt and chili sriracha salt were a hit for local cooks and chefs.

— PEACHY SRIRACHA SAUCE, burst on the scene in Fall 2015 to rave reviews.  It is her familiar sweet spicy sauce, with all natural ingredients and gluten free, which is typical of Housemade products.  The sauce is very versatile, from toast topping to spicing up spreads, dips and various dishes.  The sky is the limit with this one.

— Saturday November 21st, 2015, Housemade will debut it’s GREEN SERRANO  SAUCE at the Night Market at at 700 E. Fourth Street at the Old Yellow Cab Building in Dayton.

*** WE ARE GIVING AWAY A FREE BOTTLE of GREEN SERRANO SAUCE to a random winner who comments below on the story.

The Dayton Holiday Festival has been kindling the holiday spirit in downtown Dayton for more than four decades. This long standing tradition brings tens of thousands of children and families downtown to participate in everything the month-long festival has to offer.

There’s a wonderful lineup of events this year, including a variety of arts and cultural activities, as well as numerous family-friendly events that span the entire month of December. There truly is something for everyone to enjoy during this year’s Dayton Holiday Festival.

“Whiskey Rebellion” Release Party Saturday

November 17, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

WHISKEYREBELLIONFor the second consecutive year Warped Wing Brewing Company (WWBC) a Dayton craft brewery is releasing “Whiskey Rebellion”, a bourbon barrel aged Imperial Stout. The brew is a collaborative effort between the brewery and The Century Bar.

As the story on the can reads:

“Swelling national debt in the late 1700s led to a government-imposed whiskey tax, which crippled the emerging bourbon trade. Thirsting for freedom, an undaunted few rose up and sparked our second great revolution. In time, the reins of government control unraveled. And a truce was penned. At last, the cuffs of commonwealth came off, liberating the free flow of bourbon once again. Whiskey Rebellion. A Russian Imperial Stout steeped in reclaimed bourbon barrels. Marked with accents of chocolate, vanilla and, what else, bourbon. Stand your ground.”

The Brewery will host a release party on Saturday, November 21st at 12:00pm. This year the beer will be available in both cans and draught. 2-packs of 16 oz. cans will be available in the taproom only and will be priced at $22. Supplies are limited with one case max per customer. The beer will be available for sale in draught only to bars, restaurants and retail the following week.

In addition to the Whiskey release, 6 other rare bourbon barrel aged beers will be tapped throughout the day with schedule to be released later this week.
