‘Bullets Over Broadway’ Review – Victoria Theatre Association – Don’t Speak!

November 6, 2015 By Russell Florence, Jr.

Woody Allen’s 2014 Tony Award-nominated adaptation of his 1994 Academy Award-winning film “Bullets Over Broadway” has great charm but lacks melodic heft and consistent laughs as evidenced in its regional premiere at the Schuster Center courtesy of the Victoria Theatre Association’s Premier Health Broadway Series.

In this mildly amusing ode to theater and the Roaring Twenties, originally co-written by Douglas McGrath, struggling playwright David Shayne is thrown for a loop when his Broadway debut is upended and his artistry is called into question. Gangster Nick Valenti financially calls the shots behind the scenes having forced his utterly talentless girlfriend Olive Neal into the cast. However, the real damage is caused by David’s willingness to allow Olive’s intimidating bodyguard Cheech help him with his troubled script which sways the balance of power. David gets the glory but Cheech is the gifted glue holding everything together.

Allen, an avid clarinetist, has always had an affinity for accenting his work with period music. This time he picks ditties from the ’20s and ‘30s that suit the show’s essence but fail to thoroughly engage and properly advance the plot and character development. Considering Allen’s strengths when assembling songs of yesteryear (the soundtrack to his Academy Award-winning 2011 film “Midnight in Paris” is particularly superb), it’s startling how misguided his decisions are here. Aside from “Let’s Misbehave,” “Tain’t Nobody’s Bizness If I Do,” “There’ll Be Some Changes Made,” and a bizarre finale centered on “Yes! We Have No Bananas,” the tunes are not well known and rather forgettable, slowing the action to tedious degrees. A completely original score would have been a safer bet, especially when jukebox musicals such as this rely on the strength of nostalgia across the board in its storytelling. You can sell nostalgia with four familiar songs in the TV realm (think HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire”) but not in the world of musical theater. At the same rate, Allen’s jokes are extremely hit-and-miss which doesn’t help matters. After all, cutesy period shtick can only take a show so far before it sends the audience into a watch-checking frenzy.

Nevertheless, director Jeff Whiting and choreographer Clare Cook, recreating Susan Stroman’s original contributions, mold spirited performances from the principal cast. As David, wonderful tenor Michael Williams, vocally surpassing Zach Braff who originated the role, enjoyably conveys the neuroticism, dismay and desperation within the character. Emma Stratton terrifically inhabits the vanity and egotism of legendary diva Helen Sinclair (the role which won Dianne Wiest her second Academy Award) while selling such numbers as “They Go Wild, Simply Wild, Over Me” and “I Ain’t Gonna Play No Second Fiddle.” As ditzy loudmouth Olive, energetic Jemma Jane fills the stage with feisty, naughty sex appeal (innuendos galore can be found in the racy “Hot Dog Song”) but her incessant screechiness should be dialed back. The handsomely menacing Jeff Brooks absolutely shines as tough-talking Cheech, particularly leading a show-stopping “Tain’t Nobody’s Bizness If I Do” that not only recalls the athleticism of “Guys and Dolls” but is one of the finest, sleekest and most refreshingly masculine tap numbers ever conceived. Vocal powerhouse Hannah Rose Deflumeri (offering a fabulous “I’ve Found a New Baby”) brings grace and warmth to her appealing portrayal of David’s girlfriend Ellen. Rachel Bahler (kooky Eden) and Rick Grossman (amiable Julian) are bubbly in underwritten capacities. Michael Corvino, another strong vocalist, fittingly threatens as Nick. Bradley Allan Zarr is a delightful hoot as chunky leading man Warner Purcell who craves Olive but wisely sticks to pastries after Cheech sets him straight.

Additionally, the very attractive, period-appropriate design stems from scenic designer Jason Ardizzone-West, costumer William Ivey Long, lighting designer Carolyn Wong (recreating Donald Holder’s original contributions), and wig/hair designer Bernie Ardia. Music director Robbie Cowan conducts a vibrant eight-piece orchestra.

This adequate adaptation lacks the cohesive razzmatazz of the film and the grandeur of the short-lived Broadway production but entertains nonetheless as a silly throwback to bygone Broadway.
“Bullets Over Broadway” continues through Nov. 8 at the Schuster Center, Second and Main Streets, Dayton. Performances are Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 2 and 8 p.m., and Sunday at 2 and 7:30 p.m. The production is performed in 2 hours and 35 minutes with one 15-minute intermission. Tickets are $39-$82. For tickets or more information, call Ticket Center Stage at (937) 228-3630 or visit www.ticketcenterstage.com.

Show Offers Unique Perspective to Both Hearing and Deaf Audiences

November 6, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

b45q5vrmlm6ai6rqatx4gl2mz0y5lwenSinclair Theatre is proud to present Quid Pro Quo, an award-winning play focusing on Deaf culture, from November 6-14 in Sinclair’s Black Box Theatre, fourth floor of building 2 on the downtown Dayton campus.

In a groundbreaking move, author Garrett Zuercher wrote Quid Pro Quo to be performed in American Sign Language with voice interpretation, offering a unique perspective to both hearing and Deaf audiences.

Performances are at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays (Nov. 6, 7, 13, 14), with one Sunday matinee (Nov. 8th) at 2 p.m. All tickets are general admission and cost $15 with the exception of a Throwback Thursday performance at 7 p.m. on Nov. 12th where all seats cost $10. Tickets are available online 24/7  or one hour prior to performances (if available) at the box office. (VideoPhone: (937) 641-8419)

The Black Box Theatre is limited to 80 seats per performance so advanced purchase is suggested. Tickets may not be available at the door for this special engagement.

There will also be a 10 am matinee for student groups on Tuesday, November 10th.  For group information and special rates for this matinee, please call: 937-512-2076

About the Play
A chance meeting at a party brings two college students, Lucas and Lindsay, together and they find common ground in their experiences with hearing and Deaf cultures. Lucas is deaf and Lindsay is hearing but familiar with misconceptions about the deaf, having grown up interpreting for her grandfather who had never received proper American Sign Language training.

Quid Pro Quo is Latin for something for something or equal exchange. Perceptions can change quickly when viewed from another’s perspective. See how experiences change for Lucas and Lindsay when such an exchange is made.

Directed by Kimberly Borst with ASL coordination from Gwendolyn McNeal, the cast includes both hearing and Deaf actors. Funded by a Sinclair Cultural Diversity Grant, the Theatre and ASL Departments partnered to hire TJ Fortson, a professional Deaf actor from Texas, to play the lead role of Lucas. Katelyn Gross, a Sinclair Interpreter Training Program student, will portray Lindsay. Katelyn is a CODA – Child of a Deaf Adult. Theatre majors Ashlee Ferrell and Max Santucci took ASL classes over the summer and will serve as voice interpreters.

November 6, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

Yes indeed the 90’s are making a return this weekend via Soul Asylum and The Meat Puppets! Touring together, and stopping in Dayton, to help us relive Runaway Train, among other classics of the decade.

Formed in the summer of 1981 by high school friends Dan Murphy, Karl Mueller, and Dave Pirner, Soul Asylum (named Loud Fast Rules up until 1983) quickly became frontrunners of American college rock, following in the tradition of fellow Minnesota bands Hüsker Dü and The Replacements.

Along with Soul Asylum, are legendary desert punks the Meat Puppets. They have carved a unique niche for themselves with an unmistakable blend of cosmic country and punk rock filtered through countless acid trips, dog-eared comic books and their eclectic record collections. Along the way they’ve earned the admiration of a pantheon of critics and rock music peers. The band’s live shows and new material, including their 14th studio release, Rat Farm (April 16 release via Megaforce Records), are as colorful, vital and undiluted as ever.

Sneak Peek at Bagger Dave’s Burger Tavern

November 5, 2015 By Dayton937

The Great American Cheeseburger at Bagger Dave’s Burger Tavern

The long awaited opening of the burger chain from Michigan has opened it’s first store in Ohio.  “Bagger Dave’s Burger Tavern” will officially open to the public on Monday, but Dayton Most Metro and Food Adventures have a little sneak peek.

Thank you to Dayton Dining’s Lisa Grigsby for setting up the special tasting!  As our loyal followers know, we usually hit a place many times before highlighting the eatery.  But in this case, we will be grand opening chasers, and have only got to go twice before the public goes.

Thanks to manager Ed and the staff.  The service is already exceptional and high tech.

So here it is, the Food Adventures Crew take on the legendary Bagger Dave’s….

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

Bagger Dave’s at Cornerstone of Centerville development, off Wilmington Pike

— Bagger Daves is a chain restaurant out of Detroit, Michigan with 24 stores.  They are planning to open more locations in West Chester, Beavercreek and Springboro

— The Centerville eatery is located at 5299 Cornerstone North Blvd., near the new CostCo.

— Features are specialty burgers and Ohio beers.  Look at it as a mix between Red Robin and TGI Fridays.

— High tech, hand held ordering system ensures accuracy and speeds up the kitchen process.

— Bagger Dave’s boasts they are “cool” but have no frozen items except ice cream, and no walk in freezers on site.

— All of their soft drinks are “in-house” mixtures and brands.

— Thursdays are 50% off craft beer days.  HOLY COW this place is gonna blow out Thursday nights.

Big Glass of Warped Wing’s Ermals for $2 on Thursdays? WOW!

When we write about feature restaurants, we usually tear up the whole menu on multiple trips.  This is a rare grand opening story, so here are the MUST EATS from our two trips to baggerville…

MUST EATS from the SNEAK PEEK :

— TURKEY BLACK BEAN CHILI:  Healthier spin on chili, but we doctor it up with cheese and sour cream for a full blown  Food Adventure.  Sorry, but the toppings made this delicious bowl of chili.  Perfect for a fall day,  and perfect to start your visit.

— DEEP FRIED ARTICHOKES:  One of the most unique appetizers we have ever seen.  We love artichokes and Hungry Jax and Big Ragu’s Italian heritage prepared us for this day!  Please dip them in the Asian sauce, and thank us later.

— SWEET POTATO CHIPS with CINNAMON HONEY DIPPING SAUCE:  Light, airy with the most important thing being the dipping sauce.  One of the most incredible chip dips we have ever tried.  AMAZING !

— GREAT AMERICAN CHEESE BURGER:  The old, rock solid standard, this is the flagship burger.  Try this grilled godness and the sesame bun it is on will have you spinning in lip smacking fun.

— CRISPY BACON CHEESEBURGER:  Served on a kick ass on a grilled sesame brioche bun.  The burger is topped with Applewood smoked bacon, cheddar and Parmesan cheese, lettuce, tomato, and mayo.  So good, and so filling.  Bet you have trouble eating half of it.

— BLACK CHERRY CREAM SODA:  An “in-house” soft drink that is delicious and refreshing.  Love Dr Pepper?  This is for you…

— BROWNIE DELUXE: Not too big, not too small.  A just right serving of a rich, chocolate brownie with whipped cream.  This could definitely be a chocolate overload for some people.  For others, it is just another chocolate Food Adventure.

We were impressed with the food, beer and the service!  The atmosphere is a fun and bustling spot.

Visit Chef House, Hungry Jax and the Big Ragu on Facebook for more food pics and restaurant info that nobody else has even thought about.

As always, check out our photos below and comment about your experiences at Bagger Dave’s Burger Tavern.

Calendar Project Highights A Dozen Local Artists

November 5, 2015 By Lisa Grigsby

12187940_923968844362498_8609606020781357476_n

December created by NATE STEVENS – Nate is an undersized overachiever—dreaming and doing, living and loving in the Gem City of Dayton, Ohio. He spends his days designing, practicing jiu-jitsu, enjoying good company and anticipating his next meal. view work

It’s 4.25 inches wide and 6 inches tall and chocked full of local talent!  The 12 Musketeers 2016 letterpress calendar is a collaboration of local graduates from the School of Advertising Art.   According to their website this years calendar is:

“Geometric, organic, subtle or loud—patterns intersect with regulation and decoration in our lives. In 2016, let this calendar inspire you like it inspired us: to observe the small, the mundane, the good, and the bad. With newfound courage, chuck the old habits that no longer serve you, and create the space for new patterns to take form.”

And it even seems to come with a little advice:

“Dig deep, notice the repetitions, find the reoccurring theme, and keep repeating only what makes sense.”

pr1We asked Reka Juhasz,  currently a  print designer at Real Art as well as the calendar coordinator about the process for putting this project together:

022015

February by Shaw Green

What was the inspiration for the calendar?

The 12 Musketeers letterpress calendar in its fourth year and this year has been inspired by patterns. Each year we create a theme to give the designers a bit of an idea to go off on. They pick the month and how to convey what that month personally means to them with the inspiration at hand.

How did you chose the artists that were united for this project?

As a proud saa alum, I try each year to select people that I have been secretly spying on or people I know will deliver a good solution to the inspiration at hand. Each year I try hard to collaborate with the newest and oldest alums that can spare the time to work with me on the calendar. Sometimes you start out with friends you know will pull through, sometimes you reach out to alums based on work you have seen them do.

042015

April by Kenny Glenn

Will there be more of these collaborations?

Each year is a different animal. The first year we sold out in less than 4 weeks, the following years it’s been harder to sell the calendars. I would like to keep the project going, and maybe do a special 5-year edition next year. As long as we break even on the project we will keep doing it.

What else should we know about this project?

It’s an award winning collaboration (we have been recognized for the print work, web work and video in previous years), we are a bunch of design nerds who all love design and the craft of letterpress and we are proud to be a revolving set of 12 musketeers every year showing the community (Dayton and worldwide) what saa has taught us about being curious, collaborative and loving the process.

12musk“12 awesome designers trained in battle at saa come together to defend the honor of letterpress .”

You can purchase one of these limited addition, hand printed calendars online for just $20, perfect for holiday giving for that hard to buy for person on your gift list.  And maybe one for you, as well. But be quick, only 150 have been made.

Share The Holiday Spirit With A Family In Need

November 4, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

2013-adopt-a-family412E57128842 With the Christmas season quickly approaching, Catholic Social Services of the Miami Valley (CSSMV) is seeking support from the community for the agency’s annual Holiday Help-A-Family Program, which will serve approximately 2,000 area residents this year.

CSSMV case managers, along with case managers from several partner agencies in the community, identify families and senior citizens in need and refer them to the Holiday Help-A-Family program. Area individuals, churches, businesses, and organizations are asked to sponsor a family and/or senior in need by purchasing new gifts that the family has requested.

As families and sponsors are matched, the sponsors receive information about their matched family (or families) and can then purchase the requested items. Approximately 100 families are still in need of sponsors as of the beginning of November, so now is the time to sign up.

CSSMV Donor Relations Manager Laurie Cornett Cross says, “The need is so great this year that we have extended the sponsor deadline to make sure there will be Christmas gifts for every one of these families. Sponsoring a family is a great way to spread holiday cheer and make sure those in need have the blessed Christmas that so many of us take for granted.”

If you don’t have time to do the gift-shopping yourself, you can make a cash donation to support image003Holiday Help-A-Family. Simply go online to www.cssmv.org/donate and choose Holiday Help-A-Family as the designated program. You can also mail a check to Catholic Social Services (put “Holiday Help-A-Family” in the memo field) at 922 W. Riverview Avenue, Dayton OH  45402.

For more information about becoming a sponsor, please visit www.cssmv.org or contact Laurie Cornett Cross at (937) 223-7217 ext. 1141.

‘Chicago’ Review – Wright State University – How to Get Away with Murder

November 4, 2015 By Russell Florence, Jr.

Long before Annalise Keating displayed tremendous legal savvy, Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly knew how to get away with murder in the Windy City of the Roaring Twenties. And it’s a lot of fun seeing these merry murderesses of the Cook County Jail compete to the hilt behind bars and in the press while enticing with delicious decadence in Wright State University’s marvelous production of John Kander, Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse’s cynically satiric 1975 musical “Chicago.”

chicago 2

Caroline Chisholm (Velma Kelly) and the cast of Wright State University’s production of “Chicago” performing “All That Jazz.” (Contributed photo)

Deftly directed by Joe Deer with a striking emphasis on the show’s original vaudevillian framework, expertly heightened by choreographer Teressa Wylie McWilliams, scenic designer Adam Koch and costumer Michelle Sampson, this “Chicago” takes hold and is firmly grounded from the outset thanks to the dynamic pairing of triple threats Bailey Rose (Roxie) and Caroline Chisholm (Velma). Chisholm, resembling Academy Award-winner Catherine Zeta-Jones who portrayed Velma in the 2002 film, launches the action with a sultry, sharply focused “All That Jazz” and impressively showcases her dancing skills in “I Can’t Do It Alone” and “When Velma Takes the Stand.” But at the same rate, she doesn’t discount Velma’s desperation and bruised ego due to her standing in the press (she killed her husband and vaudeville partner-sister after finding them in bed together) as Roxie overtakes her on the front pages having murdered her lover Fred Casely. Rose, memorable last season as Wendy Darling in “Peter Pan,” absolutely dazzles in her first scene bringing astute character choices and lyric-driven brilliance to the humorous “Funny Honey” detailing Roxie’s “affection” for her meek husband Amos. Once she arrives at the introspective “Roxie,” a fascinating peek into Roxie’s dalliances and desire for stardom, Rose transforms into a fiery, unyieldingly determined force to be reckoned with specifically as Roxie is overtaken by socialite Go-To-Hell Kitty (a feisty Alex Caldwell) and comes up with a pregnancy stunt to regain favor to Velma’s dismay. Deer wisely ensures Roxie and Velma remain rivals at all costs (there is definite bad blood between these ladies) so it is a joy to see Rose and Chisholm fully ignite the show’s final moments wonderfully unified with seductively sexy, electrifying finesse in “Nowadays” and “Hot Honey Rag.” Demanding total syncopation and synergy, these two numbers are performed at such a high professional-caliber proficiency you’ll wonder if you’re actually seeing “Chicago” at WSU or in the form of a national tour at the Schuster Center.

chicago
Additionally, the confident, suave, vocally strong, and remarkably mature Jordan Adams is a true find as Roxie and Velma’s super slick lawyer Billy Flynn, whose love of law doesn’t compare to his love of women. Adams embodies Billy as a sophisticated showman totally accustomed to the fickle, gullible nature of the press. In fact, during Adams’ excellent rendition of the press-driven “We Both Reached for the Gun,” pay heed to Billy stepping aside to scribble a few lines of copy on the pad of reporter Mary Sunshine (an appropriately ambiguous Cody Westbrook). Tyler Simms, a delightful Smee in “Peter Pan,” is equally winning as the dejected Amos. Simms’ mesmerizing interpretation of “Mister Cellophane” truly conveys the isolation, loneliness and timidity permeating within Amos’ soul as he simply yearns for recognition and respect. Katie Momenee, a standout in “Sondheim on Sondheim” last season, lacks intimidating seediness as Matron “Mamma” Morton, but she sings the role very well and commands attention. Keaton Eckhoff (Fred Casely) enjoyably accents the vaudevillian structure as he gleefully introduces each song. Haylee Dobkins (June), Alyson Snyder (a poignant Hunyak), Megan Valle (Mona), Meredith Zahn (Liz), Chisholm, and Caldwell join forces for a splendidly fierce and vengeful “Cell Block Tango,” one of many remarkable routines meticulously crafted by McWilliams in the iconic spirit of Fosse while altogether original. The slinky, praiseworthy ensemble includes Briana Koon, Rebekah Espich, Scotti Stoneburner, Lindsey Knoth, Hannah Struppa, Eli Davis, Aaron Johnson, Dakota Mullins, Kyle Sell, and Philip Stock.
Deer’s top-notch artistic team includes lighting designer Matthew P. Benjamin, sound designer James Dunlap, dialect coaches Deborah Thomas and Matthew Tabor, magic consultant Kyle Miller (the circus-themed “Razzle Dazzle” eerily enthralls with surreal mystery), and music director Scot Woolley who leads a red hot 12-piece onstage orchestra.

It’s unsurprising the pursuit of fleeting fame and the effects of a topsy-turvy judicial system still strikes a chord in today’s celebrity-crazed world. Nearly everybody wants to be somebody famous, but it’s a detrimental quest. As Billy tells Roxie, “You’re a phony celebrity, kid.” Luckily for theatergoers, there’s nothing false about the commitment and passion within this rip-roaring “Chicago,” which received special permission to be mounted courtesy of Kander and is so period-perfect I felt as if I were watching an episode of HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire.”

Don’t miss your chance to discover why WSU lays claim to one of Ohio’s finest collegiate musical theater programs. It’s the real deal. And that’s good isn’t it?

“Chicago” continues through Nov. 15 in the Festival Playhouse of the Creative Arts Center at Wright State University, 3640 Col. Glenn Hwy., Fairborn. Performances are Nov. 4, 5 and 12 at 7 p.m., Nov. 6, 7, 13 and 14 at 8 p.m., and Nov. 7, 8, 14 and 15 at 2 p.m. Act One: 78 minutes; Act Two: 55 minutes. Tickets are $22 for adults and $20 seniors and students. For tickets or more information, call WSU box office at (937) 775-2500 or visit www.wright.edu/theatre-tickets.

So You Wanna “Work Out.” Now What?

November 4, 2015 By Jason Harrison

I was at a local gym yesterday and saw a man walking around with a piece of paper on which his “program” was written. He was clinically obese, didn’t move well, but he was committed to working out. Problem was, this gym had given him a program without teaching him what to do, how to do it, or why he was doing it. He ambled about from one station to the next, working his biceps on a seated machine here, his triceps over there. I tried to find a trainer to help him but no one was on duty, so I stepped in and gently corrected his form. I would have liked to have given the man my card and asked him to contact me, but this gym isn’t my space and I try to respect other businesses by not prospecting for clients when I’m there as a guest.

The episode made me a bit sad because I fear that I can project what’s going to happen with this man who has a real medical need to get in shape. What he’s doing, what’s on that piece of paper, isn’t going to work. He’ll continue to be obese, and what’s more he’ll likely tell people that he tried “working out” only to give up because it didn’t work. I hope I’m wrong, but I’ve seen it too many times before to think that I am. This is an example of the fitness industry failing in every aspect of its objectives—all the while collecting fees from a monthly gym membership that’s about as useful as banging one’s head against the wall.

IMG_0166

The older version of you will thank you for exercising today.

If you’re not currently working out and you’d like to begin, or if you ARE working out but not seeing results, here is one man’s opinion for what you ought to be doing.

1.) Strength training that incorporates basic movement patterns, full-body function, and progressive overload.

  • Basic movement patterns – squat, hip hinge, push things away from you (horizontally and vertically), and pull things toward you (horizontally and vertically).
  • Full-body function – No isolating muscle groups like “arms” until and unless you’ve done the basic movement patterns OR if you’ve been prescribed something specific by a physical therapist or sports medicine professional. Remember the obese man I saw yesterday at the gym? He’s simply not going to bicep curl away the 70 pounds he needs to lose in order to stay healthy.
  • Progressive overload – You have to lift something heavier next month than you’re lifting right now or your body will cease adapting to the stimulus that working out should be providing. Now, this isn’t always linear; sometimes you need to lift less today in order to be able to lift more tomorrow. But generally your aim should be adding to the amount of resistance working against you so your body can react by building more muscle, denser bone, and stronger joints.

2.) Cardiovascular health.

Sit less, walk more, preferably every single day. This is not so much about “burning calories” or “losing weight” as it is about keeping your human body active and in motion the way it was built to be. If your goal is to be a runner, then you should run, or better yet, learn how to run well with a great coach like Sarah Scozzaro, a former Daytonian who works with clients all over the country. But if you’re goal isn’t to be a runner, then you don’t need to run.

Go for a walk!

Go for a walk!

You can row. You can bike. You can dance. You can swim. Just get your heart rate up a few times a week and try to sit less. Those things COUPLED with a well-rounded strength training regimen will help you achieve the body you want. What do I mean by that? You’re not going to Zumba your way to a great body–but you can incorporate Zumba into a well-rounded training schedule.

Combining Exercise Types

The key is to be mindful about how it all fits together. If yoga is your primary exercise, then think about how you might supplement some strength training to ensure, for example, that you’re getting in the horizontal and vertical pulling needed to build a strong back. If strength training is your primary form of exercise, then think about what you’re doing to ensure that you’re getting in some form of cardiovascular exercise. Jen Sinkler would say you can simply “lift weights faster,” which is true. Whatever you do, just make sure you’re purposefully elevating your heart rate during some aspect of your training.

There is no one perfect way of going about fitness, and I urge you to be cautious with anyone who pushes exercise dogma. I can tell you this with confidence, however: most of you reading this ought to walk right on by the rows of Nautilus machines at the local rec center. Learn how to move instead. The 70-year-old version of yourself will thank you.

44 Years of Flying Pizzas ** Win a Large Pizza **

November 3, 2015 By Dayton937 23 Comments

The Sicilian Square and a Hand Tossed slice in the back

Dough can be seen flying in the air through the windows at 223 N Main Street in downtown Dayton.  The familiar window sign, hustle and bustle is all part of “The Original Flying Pizza.”

The owners, the Graci family have been tossing pizzas downtown for 44 years, and they are still going strong.  One slice at a time, they have stolen the hearts and stomachs of many Daytonians by serving their special New York Style Pizza recipe.

** YOU CAN WIN ONE OF THESE LARGE, 1 topping PIZZAS BY COMMENTING BELOW (winner chosen at random).**

How did a mom and pop from Sicily, make their American dream come true?  Only Food Adventures has the scoop!

HERE’S THE SKINNY ON HOW FLYING PIZZA BECAME A DAYTON ICON:

Brothers Tony and Frank Graci share a laugh at the pizza shop

FROM SICILY to THE USA :
In 1958, long before becoming icons in Dayton, John Graci and his wife Frances left Sicily for the United States.  They settled in New York City.  After getting a job at “Sam’s Pizza,”  John honed his pizza making skills.  In a twist of fate, that building would soon be torn down to build the World Trade Center.

FROM NEW YORK CITY to DAYTON, OHIO:
John and Frances decided to drive and visit John’s brother and his girlfriend who were in Middletown Ohio.   As fate would have it, they got a flat tire in Dayton.  John and Frances thought Dayton was a vibrant, fun city and full of life, with a lot going on.  They thought it would be a great place to raise a family.  The Graci family left the Big Apple for the Gem City.  Before you know it, in 1971 they had their own pizza shop downtown.  They had two sons, Tony and Frank.  John and his pizza were becoming a favorite, and he was even appearing on TV on Clubhouse 22 with Duffy the Dog and Malcom, showing his pizza tossing skills.

That was the early 70’s and the pizza business continued to grow in the 80’s and 90’s with cousins opening  stores in Columbus, Mason, Fairborn and Centerville.

The Original Flying Pizza Downtown

PRESENT DAY – THE ORIGINAL FLYING PIZZA DOWNTOWN, 2015
Now, the next generation runs day to day operations downtown.  Tony and Frank Graci can be found greeting customers and slicing pies daily.  They still use that patented “Graci dough toss” every day.

— The Orginal Flying Pizza is located at 223 North Main Street in Downtown Dayton

— NY style pizza by the slice, or whole pies.

— Two types of pizza: (You can win a large one topping pizza free by commenting below)
1) Hand tossed NY style huge slices
2) Sicilian Squares – a thick, more bread like crust topped with special tomato sauce (old school)

— They have calzones and desserts too

— Hours are Mon – Sat 10:30am -7pm, closed Sundays

— They serve beer, as well as host private parties

— There is a parking garage and you get the first 30 minutes free if you ask the cashier for a parking validation

Now you know the story, so let’s dive into the food….

A Slice of Cheese Hand Tossed on the right, a Sicilian Slice of Cheese on the left

Ladies and gentlemen, we now present The Original Flying Pizza’s “Must Eats.”

MUST EATS:

— HAND TOSSED CHEESE PIZZA (SLICE or WHOLE PIE):  This is it, the mainstay, the staple, the foundation of a Dayton icon.  The mozzarella cheese is perfect, the sauce is perfect, the dough is perfect… every time.  They call it “Neapolitan Pizza” which is the name for the style of pizza made in Naples, Italy.

WHEN YOU BUY A SLICE:  The slices are big.  If you order one, they turn around and heat it up in the oven for a couple of minutes.  It will be hot as hell when you get it.  We burn our mouth every time.  You have been warned.

WHEN YOU BUY A PIE: It doesn’t matter if you fold it and eat it or let it hang and get under it.  This stuff is the best.  They tape the box closed to piss off those of you who want to steal a slice on the way home.

Frank Graci lets some dough fly at Flying Pizza, Downtown Dayton

— THE SICILIAN SQUARE CHEESE PIZZA:  A thicker, more bread like crust, rubbed with olive oil and dusted with garlic and a special marinara sauce.  The ending finish is the thick sprinkles of melted mozzarella cheese.  It is the cap, on a piece of perfection.

WHEN YOU BUY A SLICE:  The slices are Big Squares.  Every piece has crust,  some have one side of crust, corner pieces have 2 sides,.  Very filling, very good.

WHEN YOU BUY A PIE:  A big square  pizza either 6 or 9 pieces.  This stuff is so simple and delicious, yet different than any pizza you have ever tried.

— THE CALZONE: The secret here is they use ricotta cheese in the calzones.  The fresh dough seals the deal, literally.  The only drawback is that every calzone is Pepperoni and Sausage, so deal with it.  Yes, they have one type of calzone.

— SIDE OF 3 MEATBALLS SAUCE and CHEESE: All beef meatballs, marinara and mozzarella, they heat it up, you eat it down.  It is like a bowl of cereal for Italian people.

Honorable Mention:  The BREADSTICKS at the Centerville location are the closest things to the old Noble Romans that we have ever eaten.

So there is your guide to another epic Food Adventure.

Now take a chance at winning a FREE LARGE PIZZA with ONE TOPPING by leaving a COMMENT BELOW!

A winner will be chosen at random on SATURDAY…

And don’t forget to”like” Food Adventures on Facebook by clicking here!
