Beavercreek Brewery Sets Opening Date

November 21, 2016 By Dayton Most Metro

15027813_641325592715980_4752995782437629383_nWandering Griffin Brewery & Pub, the first independently owned microbrewery restaurant in Beavercreek, announced it will have a soft opening on Wednesday, November 23 starting at 6 am followed by its grand opening on Friday, December 2 at 6 am. During the grand opening, there will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony at noon. The Mayor of Beavercreek will be in attendance.

Wandering Griffin, managed by principle owners Brian Young and Tony Griffin in conjunction with a number of investors, offers patrons a unique dining experience with its 1930s art deco dining room and bar, 1860s reclaimed wood taproom and coffee bar. It has extensive lunch and dinner menus and full bar service.

wgkitchen
Chefs Kenneth Mangus and Jason Breitenstien, formerly of Coco’s Bistro and Winds Café respectively, head up the kitchen and have created lunch and dinner menus that feature locally-sourced and housemade appetizers, soups, salads, sandwiches and entrées, including tater tots, beef on weck, pork belly grilled cheese, gourmet pizza and pan seared salmon. The bar includes handcrafted beers, an array of wine and signature cocktails. The brewery and pub also offers a large partially covered patio with a bar and outdoor televisions.

wg3The full-service coffee bar, aptly named Wanderlust, is located in the heart of the brewery and pub. The coffee bar is open daily 6:30 am – 3 pm and will offer drive-through service from 6 am – 10 am on weekdays and 7 am – 10 am on weekends.

Wandering Griffin isn’t offering its own craft beer yet, but expects to start brewing mid to late 2017. Brian Young states that, “This is a very exciting time for the beer scene in the greater Dayton region, and we are happy to be a part of it. Our aim is to provide a variety of locally-brewed craft beers and guest taps until we’re brewing our own. When we do brew our own, we plan to offer a variety of styles, including lagers.”

Wandering Griffin is located at 3725 Presidential Drive, Beavercreek, Ohio 45324. It’s open 11 am – 11 pm Monday – Thursday, 11 am – midnight Friday and Saturday and 11 am – 10 pm Sunday. Wanderlust coffee bar service begins daily at 6:30 am. Food service begins daily at 11 am.

‘Ripcord’ Review – Young at Heart Players – Ruthless Roommates

November 20, 2016 By Russell Florence, Jr.

One-upmanship among widows at a New Jersey senior living facility provides the lighthearted and surprisingly touching crux of Pulitzer Prize winner David Lindsay-Abaire’s 2015 Off-Broadway comedy “Ripcord,” currently receiving a pleasantly humorous local premiere at the Dayton Playhouse courtesy of Young at Heart Players, a senior troupe founded by Fran Pesch entering its 16th season.

ripcord

Fran Pesch (Marilyn Dunne) and Gayle Smith (Abby Binder) co-star as roommates at odds in Young at Heart Players’ local premiere of David Lindsay-Abaire’s comedy “Ripcord” (Photo by Art Fabian)

In this breezy, socially conscious battle of wills staged with astute tone by Annie Pesch, intimidating, tightly-wound bookworm Abby Binder (Gayle Smith) and chatty go-getter Marilyn Dunne (Pesch) are roommates at serious odds. Abby, a retired teacher, shudders at the thought of sharing her digs, especially since its luxuries include a large window and a beautiful view of a park. Ultimately, these polar opposites make a pivotal bet which fuels the play’s silly, dangerous fire. If Abby can make the cheerfully chipper Marilyn angry, Marilyn will move to another room. If Marilyn can make the emotionally rigid Abby scared, she can stay in the room and switch beds so she can have the prized view. In Lindsay-Abaire’s typically kooky fashion, what transpires is an outlandish series of practical jokes ranging from spontaneous skydiving (hence the title) to a fake robbery with a wacky trip to a haunted house thrown in for good measure. Still, as the competition grows crueler with personal stings, a meaningful dose of heartache arises, adding greater, relatable resonance to a play that could’ve been overly repetitive or merely trivial.

Smith, a standout last season in the Dayton Theatre Guild’s production of “The Trip to Bountiful,” is equally strong here capturing the full spectrum of Abby’s persnickety, perturbed, lonesome, and occasionally foul-mouthed aura. She’s really compelling late in Act Two when Lindsay-Abaire wonderfully reveals the pain of Abby’s past scarred by vanished dreams and desires. The delightfully perky Pesch has a ball embodying Marilyn’s joy and keen perceptiveness. There were a few awkward timing issues between Smith and Pesch at the performance attended, but their chemistry didn’t falter on the whole. In addition, Mark Anderson supplies amiable charm as facility aide Scotty, Angela Timpone and John-Michael Lander are zestfully spirited as Marilyn’s daughter Colleen and son-in-law Derek, and J. Gary Thompson, reliably seamless when required to juggle multiple roles, heightens the drama as Benjamin, an estranged, troubled man seeking reconciliation. The personality-tinged scenic design is also noteworthy, particularly the excellent contrast of Abby’s dour décor opposite Marilyn’s colorful accents. In fact, Marilyn’s array of photos and a specific piece of artwork from her grandson says everything about how much she is treasured by her family and why that level of unconditional love likely infuriates Abby to the bone.
Within the fascinating realm of the Lindsay-Abaire universe, “Ripcord” doesn’t strive to be as profound or riveting as “Rabbit Hole” and “Good People” or as darkly funny as “Fuddy Meers” and “Kimberly Akimbo.” It simply lives in an engagingly obtainable world of its own as a revealing reminder of the universal importance of connection, forgiveness and hope.

“Ripcord” continues through Nov. 27 at the Dayton Playhouse, 1301 E. Siebenthaler Ave., Dayton. Performances are Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Act One: 50 minutes; Act Two: 45 minutes. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for seniors/ students. Seating is general admission. Tickets may be purchased with cash or check only. For more information, call (937) 654-0400 or visit online at www.youngatheartplayers.com. Patrons are advised the show contains some strong language not suitable for younger audiences.

Today is the Day of Transgender Remembrance

November 20, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

12272623_10153127702751956_2039615791_nToday is the world wide Transgender Day of Remembrance, dedicated to educating people about the trans community and the important issues trans people face worldwide, from hate crimes, to healthcare hurdles, to employment discrimination.

Created originally to honor Rita Hester, a highly visible member of the transgender community in her native Boston, MA where she worked locally on education around transgender issues. Rita was stabbed 20 times in her apartment.  Almost two decades later, police still have not found Rita’s murderer (or murderers). In 1999, one year after Rita’s murder, advocate and writer Gwendolyn Ann Smith coordinated a vigil in Rita’s honor. The vigil commemorated not only Rita, but all who were tragically lost to anti-transgender violence.

Transgender Pride Flag

Findings from the ‘Injustice at Every Turn’ report conducted by the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) and the National LGBTQ Task Force showed alarming rates of violence and harassment expreienced by the more than 6,000 transgender repondents across a variety of contexts, including educational settings, at work, in interactions with police and with family members, at homeless shelters, accessing public accommodations, and in jails and prisons.

Although not every person represented during the Day of Remembrance self-identified as transgender — that is, as a transsexual, crossdresser, or otherwise gender-variant — each was a victim of violence based on bias against transgender people. The deaths of those based on anti-transgender hatred or prejudice are largely ignored. Over the last decade, more than one person per month has died due to transgender-based hate or prejudice, regardless of any other factors in their lives.

The 2014 Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and HIV-affected Hate Violence Report from the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Projects shows that, of the victims murdered, 80% were people of color, 55% were transgender women, and 50% were transgender women of color. Transgender women survivors of hate violence were also more likely to experience police violence, physical violence, discrimination, harassment, sexual violence, threats, and intimidation compared to those who were not transgender women

15025531_1515366375141678_8416433258949392199_oAnti-transgender violence isn’t just directed at adults. Statistics from the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) show that in schools, 16.2% of transgender students report being physically assaulted as a result of gender expression, while 32.5% experience physical harassment.

The Greater Dayton LGBT Center will host a Candlelight Ceremony today at 4pm to honor those lost to violence because they are Gender-Noncoforming.  The Center is located at 24 N. Jefferson St, Suite 200 and all are welcome. Their will be a panel discussion with members of our local Transgender community, as well as welcoming remarks from Mayor Nan Whaley.

Fifth Third Bank’s $30 billion Community Development Plan

November 18, 2016 By Dayton Most Metro

fifththirdToday, the Dayton Community Reinvestment Coalition, consisting of numerous organizations focused on fair and affordable housing, small business development, social services and workforce development, commended the $30 billion Community Development Plan announced by Fifth Third Bank.

The plan was developed in an agreement between Fifth Third and members and allies of the National Community Reinvestment Coalition (NCRC), including the Dayton Community Reinvestment Coalition. Dayton is expected to benefit substantially from the loans and investments included in this agreement.

Fifth Third’s Community Development Plan, starting in 2016 and taking place over five years, includes mortgage and small business lending, including micro-lending, community development lending and investing, philanthropy, and financial services for low- and moderate-income communities.

“Fifth Third’s commitment to investment in low- and moderate-income neighborhoods in Dayton will help our community by leveraging other investments already taking place. Community Development organizations like County Corp are looking forward to working directly with 5/3 to implement these investments,” said Adam Black, Vice President of Housing, County Corp.

“Sustainable neighborhood revitalization is only possible with the support of both the public and private sectors. Fifth Third’s public benefit agreement demonstrates a commitment to provide valuable private resources to Dayton-area communities most in need. Greater Dayton Premier Management is grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the process and work hand in hand with partner agencies seeking to improve communities,” added Kiya Patrick-Director, Planning and Development, Greater Dayton Premier Management

“As a member of the Dayton community, I am pleased to see that Fifth Third has made a commitment to ensuring financial services to low- and moderate-income communities and individuals as well as small businesses,” said Catherine Crosby, executive director, City of Dayton Human Relations Council. “Small businesses are the primary employers in Dayton, which makes it critical to ensure that resources are available not only for financial stability, but also to build capacity through technical assistance. We look forward to continuing our partnership to fulfill mutual goals for economical sustainability in diverse low- and moderate-income communities in Dayton.”

“This substantive and detailed community development plan was the result of a collaborative process with community members and bank leaders,” said NCRC President & CEO John Taylor. “We applaud President & CEO Greg Carmichael and the senior leadership of Fifth Third, who after putting out a significant community commitment earlier in the year, were willing and eager to deeply engage NCRC and its member organizations in significant discussions to ensure the commitments made were in areas of the greatest community need and put in place rigorous accountability for their bank and the communities they serve.”

The Community Development Plan was developed through meetings with NCRC and 135 other community-based organizations across Fifth Third’s footprint.

The Community Development Plan will:

*    Fund $11 billion in mortgage lending to low- and moderate-income individuals and communities;
*    Fund $10 billion in small business lending in all markets and communities to businesses with gross annual revenue below $1 million;

*    Fund $93 million in philanthropy;
*    Work to ensure adequate access to bank branches in low- and moderate-income communities and communities of color, including opening at least 10 new branches.

Warped Wing Brewing Co. is a craft brewery inspired by Dayton’s rich history of innovation and invention. They are committed to carrying that spirit forward in today’s craft beer scene by brewing new proprietary beer styles and our own “warped” interpretations. They also focus on creating unique seasonal and specialty beers.

They have a full-scale production brewery in the heart of downtown Dayton in the site of the old Buckeye Brass & Iron Foundry circa 1938. They brew and distribute their beers to local restaurants, bars, grocery and retailers in the Dayton, Cincinnati and Columbus markets.

Zombie Dogz Now Open on Brown Street

November 13, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

15032310_1441808535833851_7648682607517009699_nAfter much anticipation and several practice nights, the doors at Zombie Dogz  officially open at 1200 Brown Street today at 10am.

They’ll be serving up their gourmet hot dogs seven days a week.  Hours will be:

Monday-Thursday 10:30-11
Friday-Saturday 10:30-midnight
Sunday 10-9

With 12 dogz on the menu and 3 seasonal dogs making special appearances, they’ve even added a  gluten free bun option, diners will have plenty of choices.  Sides include Dr.Pepper baked beans, truffle macaron15016181_1194712637262713_3339948040059206830_oi and cheese and tater tots!

They’ve also partnered with Beavercreek bakery  Cake, Hope & Love to offer an exclusive line of cupcakes with three  flavors (pictured below) you won’t find anywhere else, according CH&L owner Shannon Teague. For many of us this ability to support to awesome local entrepreneurs in one building is great news!

Owners David and Lee VanArtsdalen, with 9 week old Dylan and big brother Dylan have spent the last week hosting friends, family and supporters into the restaurant so they can test the new staff, the set up, learn the registers and get ready for the crowds that will no doubt pack the place.  At one of the preview nights, I commented to them I think their biggest problem is going to be staying below the mandated  occupancy code of 66!  Lee shared that on top of having the new baby and opening the shop, they are moving to a new house this coming weekend as well.

The VanArstdalen’s posted this thank you on their facebook page today:davidlee

“Something I’d also like to mention is all of the local community we’ve pulled in to help build our location. The artists, marketing people, tech peeps, contractors, design group, realtor company ect……. are all a part of helping our restaurant come together and wouldn’t be what it is now without the help of everyone who’s rode this ride with us. We’d just like to give a special thanks to those mentioned that have really made our new location what it is now.”

We wish them all huge success!  And yes, they food truck will still continue to make appearances around town!

Meet Dorothy Lane’s Culinary School All Stars

Peggy Neary during a featured cooking class

Calling all cooks!  Our Food Adventures Crew loves to entertain.  One of those ways is through whipping up meals for friends and family.  Want to learn some skills from the basic to advanced?  May we suggest some classes?  If you want to “wow” them at your next dinner party, well then, we have the place for you….

Whether you call it the Dorothy Lane Market School of Cooking or the Culinary Center at Dorothy Lane Market, there is a cult following for this organization.  And rightfully so, as we are lucky to have such a resource her in Dayton.  Many brilliant cooks, chefs and kitchen volunteers make kitchen program come to life.  Each year, throughout all 12 months, hundreds of attendees learn from some of the Miami Valley’s Best.  Today, Food Adventures would like to introduce you to some of the All Stars that shine in this stellar organization.

HERE’S THE SKINNY on THE CULINARY CENTER at DLM:

— Located at 6177 Far Hills Ave. in Centerville in the Washington Square Shopping Center.

— Hours are Monday – Friday 10am-3pm

— They offer classes year round for all ages

Mary Cooney, one of our favorites with Jax !

Mary Cooney, one of our favorites with Jax who has Mary’s cookbook !

— Prices range, depending on the class, and of course you get taste plates of each course during these events.

— Some classes are hands on, others are just observatory.  The smells and the flavors are always fantastic, and the lessons are very informative.

— Numerous volunteers help clean, serve and even prepare some parts of the meals.  Without them, the courses would not go as smoothly.  In fact they wouldn’t take place at all.

— They do private events, like office parties.  Team building events, anniversary parties, etc.

The school of cooking is close to our hearts.  Hungry Jax has

been steadily active in volunteering over the years. She introduced The Big Ragu to the group, and he has even volunteered about 10 times over the past few years.  Chef House has hosted her own cooking classes, and has lead the way for our Food Adventures Crew to reach our dream of hosting a couple of classes ourselves (The next one is  “Food Adventure Party Foods” on May 18th, 2016).

Over the years, we have gotten to know the “ins and outs” of this fantastic Culinary Center, and the many “unsung heroes” of local cooking.

We are proud to introduce you to just some of the workhorses, that make the center a great success.  They are today’s “Must Meets.”

DOROTHY LANE MARKET CULINARY CENTER’S “MUST MEETS:

PEGGY NEARY: Peggy has been a joyful part of the DLM experience for 16 years.  She is the current manager, and runs most of the planning day in and day out. She readies and schedules all the classes, and prepares the paperwork.  even though she has a busy schedule, she always finds time to meet and plan for new events. Peggy always has a smile on her face, and is a big supporter of the Dayton community.  She is the glue.. er glucose that holds the place together !

MARY COONEY: Mary has been huge part of the classes and cooking program for over a decade.  Her specialties are her lifelong, Italian family recipes.  She is a tremendous baker too.  Mary Cooney is a first-generation Italian-American who has a passion for teaching. that is hard to equal. She loves to share her knowledge of authentic Italian dishes as well as baking pies and desserts. We recommend her cookbook which just happens to be for sale at the DLM Culinary Center as well.  She is definitely one of our favorites.

CARRIE WALTERS:  Every time we are around Carrie, she is always making some incredible food.  She is the official Dorothy Lane Market Corporate Chef.  She is in charge of running some of the most popular events at DLM like the Food & Wine Show.  She is also very involved in helping develop the curriculum of the Culinary Center classes.   Her happiness in the kitchen is infectious, and her classes are delicious, informative and fun.  Her reach goes beyond the School of Cooking.  You can find many of Carrie’s recipes in the pre-made foods for sale at Dorothy Lane Market.   She develops DLM’s Market report and instructional videos.  She loves to travel, and uses those opportunities to learn new recipes, cooking methods which enhance the programs of the Culinary Center.

Julia hoy is a shining star at the DLM Culinary Center

Julia Hoy is a shining star at the DLM Culinary Center

JULIA HOY: She typically works days at the Dorothy Lane Market Culinary Center.  Her specialty is German cooking and dishes.  Julia is also known for her dedication and cooking instruction in the “Basics” classes.  These are perfect introductory classes that are essesntial for those wanting to build the foundation of food knowledge.  This California girl graduated from college with a degree in Food Science.  She put her skills to work at Sunkist Growers, shortly before moving to Ohio.  Julia began working at Dorothy Lane Market in 2006 developing recipes for the Produce Departments. She continued her education at Sinclair, attaining a Culinary Arts degree and Culinary Certification.  She is a workhorse of the organization, and is one of the reasons for the school’s solid success.

ZEBBIE BORLAND: For 25 years, Zebbie has been a part of the Dorothy Lane Market family.  She is known for her popular cooking classes for kids.  From grilling to desserts, these classes are basic, informative and a perfect way to introduce your children formally to the world of cooking.  One of the pillars of the center, Zebbie helps round out a full program of classes at the Culinary Center.  Parents, take advantage of her great classes !

JOHN  CHICO: John is a passionate home cook.  His experiences cooking for family (like his 4 Italian Grandparents) and friends have brought his influences to the Culinary Center.  Always willing to learn new things, John soaks up a lot of the information and techniques by rubbing elbows the the staff.  John hosts the popular Pretzel Classes and a continuing education program with the University of Dayton.  Beef stew, polento, and sousvide are some of his specialties. He uses his wife and children to test “breakfast for dinner” recipes.  John has taken calsses at the center, volunteered for classes and finally has come full circle into an instructor.

We would be remiss if Food Adventures didnt mention just some of the “MUST MEET” chefs that have an influence on the Culinary Center at DLM.

CHEF JENN DISANTO:  This amazing Chef is even more of an amazing person.  She is one of our favorite people in the world.  Chef Jenn DiSanto has a long friendship with Chef House.  Hungry Jax has worked many of her cooking classes over the past decade.  Big Ragu even worked one a few year back, but his heart was stolen by the menu at her catering business called Fresco (that is another whole Food Adventure article in itself).  Jenn is a classically trained chef, known for using the highest-quality seasonal ingredients.

Hungry Jax on Kitchen Prep for some Buffalo Roll

Hungry Jax on Kitchen Prep for some Buffalo Roll

She earned her culinary degree in Connecticut but has traveled extensively, even becoming a private chef domestically and overseas.  Chef Disanto loves to pay homage to different cultures by producing some delicious, rustic recipes from different countries.  An upstate New York native, she brings a strong work ethic to the kitchen.  The result is meals that are extremely flavorful.  Jenn also devotes much time and resources to helping various Dayton area charities that are close to her heart.

CHEF ELIZABETH WILEY: Chef Wiley is one of the culinary superstars of the Miami Valley.  This Kansas native has been cooking professionally since 1979.  After coming to Dayton and having a nearly 2 decade stint at the Winds she went a different direction. In 2004, her big breakout came when she wowed crowds after opening Meadowlark Restaurant.  Her mantra is “We cook what we like to eat, and what’s in season.”  That philosophy has led to unmatched triumphs. Using her experiences cooking in Chicago, San Francisco and Key West, Chef Wiley has poured this knowledge into her delicious menus.  She parlayed her success and partnered in opening “Wheat Penny Pizza Oven.”  This inventive venture takes

pizza and Italian favorites to a new level.  She is also well known for her charitable contributions to local causes. Stay tuned for more news and business ventures from Chef Wiley.

CHEF LIZ VALENTI:  Chef Valenti is a positive force of energy at the DLM Culinary Center.  She is Catering and Private Party Director.  She handles all of this along with her businesses partnerships like, Wheat Penny Pizza Oven.  Known for pizza and innovative takes on Italian food, Liz’s star has been shining in Dayton for some time. Not only is she an amazing kitchen talent, she is also a great person.   If she is a part of the event, be prepared for a delicious time.  You will often notice her and her business partners helping various non-profit organizations around town.  She is always giving back to the community.

The Culinary Center also has some fun internal events from various Pot Luck dinners, to a Julia Child Birthday celebration meal.

Oh and lest we forget the store inside the Culinary Center.  Along the walls are books and various kitchen utensils for sale.  A lot of these items you won’t find anywhere else.  They also offer kitchen towels, copper items and many upscale verisons of essesntial kitchen tools.

DP&L’s Gift of Power Helps Those In Need Stay Warm

November 11, 2016 By Dayton Most Metro

The Dayton Power and Light Company (DP&L) is proud to announce the Gift of Power program’s second season. The fund provides emergency relief for DP&L customers struggling to pay their winter heating bills.

14991178_1142539859193255_4967481984516750691_oGift of Power helps customers who are just above the income guidelines for other Ohio Energy Assistance programs and are experiencing a financial hardship, such as the loss of a spouse or an unexpected cost, making it difficult to stay current with their bills. The goal is to prevent disconnection or help quickly restore customers who have been disconnected. The program begins the day after Martin Luther King Jr. Day (January 17, 2017) and runs through April 15, 2017.

The program’s inaugural year was very successful, helping over 400 families in the service territory. “The launch of Gift of Power more than exceeded our expectations. We were hoping for a strong first year, and thanks to the generous donations and support from our community, that happened. The response was tremendous from our customers, employees and other stakeholders, who donated an additional $60,000 to DP&L’s initial funding. We are grateful to everyone who helped our Ohio neighbors stay warm,” said Tom Raga, DP&L’s President and CEO.

DP & L is again partnering with The Salvation Army, who will be administering the program.  The kickoff will launch with a $115,000 DP&L corporate grant.

To apply, donate online, or learn more about the Gift of Power program, visit dpandl.com/gift.
