‘Jailbait’ Review – Playground Theatre – Dangerous Game

December 3, 2016 By Russell Florence, Jr.

Every day is Saturday. This no holds barred philosophy seems to suit 15-year-old sophomores Emmy and Claire, a naive duo on the prowl for unassuming older men in Deirdre O’Connor’s riveting contemporary dramedy “Jailbait,” which receives an outstanding local premiere in the Mathile Theatre of the Schuster Center courtesy of millennial-centric Playground Theatre.

jailbait

(left to right) Christopher Hahn (Mark), Lisa Glover (Emmy), Mike Beerbower (Robert), and Jenna Gomes (Claire) star in Playground Theatre’s local premiere of Deirdre O’Connor’s contemporary dramedy”Jailbait” (Contributed photo)

Instead of clinging to the innocence of youth, the reticent Claire (an expertly cautious and emotionally wounded Jenna Gomes) and confidently sly Emmy (magnetically effervescent Lisa Glover) dress up in their sexiest attire (the beginning of Claire’s transformation greatly impacts the dynamics of the opening scene) to meet thirtysomething friends Mark (Playground co-founder Christopher Hahn in skillful attack mode) and Robert (an endearingly square Mike Beerbower) at a club. Arrogantly brutish Mark, the epitome of a player, and sensitive Robert, still reeling from a bad breakup and particularly suffering from commitment issues, have no idea they’re stepping into dangerous territory, fueling the action and its momentum to the hilt.

When situations go too far, everything crashes in a heartrendingly predictable sea of anger, guilt, shame, and tears. How could it not? Even so, O’Connor daringly and vividly weaves themes of intimacy, connection and the complexities of adulthood into a frankly conversational, real-time framework. Desperation, enticement and sexual politics play out with snappy language that shocks and titillates often in the same breath. The game being played only transpires in one night but is potent enough to leave you questioning the depths some are willing to take to simply hit it off with a stranger. As Mark warns Robert in a moment of indecision, “Don’t think of it as lying. Think of it as improv in a bar.”

Staged with superbly character-conscious, slice of life realism by Playground co-founder Jenna Valyn, “Jailbait” soars as the radiant cast sharply uncovers varying degrees of deception and desire. Hahn, savvy enough to display Mark’s vulnerabilities, has a fun, brotherly rapport with Beerbower and smoothly engages with the fabulously flirtatious Glover. Having memorably appeared in two Dare to Defy Productions this season, Glover is a knockout once more navigating Emmy’s arc ranging from drunken daze to tempting tease to regretful confidant. Gomes and Beerbower’s charming awkwardness in their first meeting appealingly lays the groundwork for a pivotal, confrontational exchange, grippingly performed by the duo, which brings the hard truth to the surface. Additionally, the excellent sound design, specifically in the club scenes, complements the cast without overpowering them. R&B beats pulsate underneath the dialogue, but every word can be heard, which is an impressive feat.

Accented with “Alice in Wonderland” subtleties and a cool Spotify playlist, this terrific experience is one of the finest of the fall. Don’t miss it.

“Jailbait” continues through Dec. 4 at in the Mathile Theatre of the Schuster Center, Second and Main Streets, Dayton. Performances are Saturday at 2 and 8 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. The play is performed in 90 minutes without intermission. Tickets are $20. For tickets, call Ticket Center Stage at (937) 228-3630 or visit www.ticketcenterstage.com. For additional information, visit theplaygroundtheatre.org. Patrons are advised the play contains adult language and situations.

McDonald’s Chicken Breakfast Sandwich Giveaway !

December 3, 2016 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Chicken Biscuit with Cheese and Honey

Chicken Biscuit with Cheese and Honey

The Big Ragu is a fan of the new chicken breakfast sandwiches at McDonalds and he wants to give away some free sandwiches to you.

***Five lucky people who comment below on this article, will be chosen at random to win Two Free Breakfast Sandwiches each***.

The best part (besides them being free) is that you don’t have to wait just for breakfast hours.  These babies are the newest items available all day as part of McDonald’s All Day Breakfast Menu.

HERE’S THE SKINNY ON McDONALDS NEW CHICKEN BREAKFAST SANDWICHES:

The Chicken McGriddle

The Chicken McGriddle

— CHICKEN MCGRIDDLE:  A fried chicken patty, tucked between two pancakes, injected with syrup.  This is probably the fave of the bunch.  This is like a chicken and waffles in every bite.  Here is a tip, order it with cheese !

— CHICKEN BISCUIT: A full country biscuit houses this fried chicken patty.  Here is a tip, order it with honey, it will make your mouth water.  This is the most filling of the three sandwiches.

— CHICKEN MCMUFFIN: This sandwich is, of course, a fried chicken patty on a toasted English Muffin.  We love to try this one with a little bit of mayo, so ask for a packet.   Bring some crunch into your morning with this winner.

HONORABLE MENTION: Don’t forget to order a hash brown to go along with your sandwich.  Want to get a little wacky?  Put the hash brown inside the sandwich like the Big Ragu does.  We call this creation a “McChicken ‘n Tater” sandwich.

So, next time you are on the go, and pull into the Golden Arches, remember these Food Adventure tips.  For about 2 bucks you can grab a good sandwich.  They are great as is, but if you want to doctor them up, consider ordering them with cheese and honey.  Even order them with mayo depending on your condiment preferences.  Remember, they aren’t just for breakfast anymore, since McDonald’s serves them up all day.

Food Adventures has no rules, we eat it all and give our slant

Breaking News: Montgomery County Fairgrounds Has A Buyer (or Two)

December 2, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

1600px-exposition_hall_montgomery_county_fairgroundsWe’ve heard through a source that a deal has been struck to sell the Montgomery County  Fairgrounds for a reported sum of $15 million dollars.  The 2017 fair will continue at the current location.  Plans beyond that have not been revealed

Earlier this week The City of Dayton, Montgomery County Commissioners and the Montgomery County Agriculture Society rejected two offers that had been submitted from Miller-Valentine Group and Indiana’s Thompson Thrift saying neither proposal addressed all the required components from the RFP.  This was Miller-Valentine’s second at bat for acquiring the fairgrounds. Back in 2014 they entered into an exploratory agreement to purchase the land, but after the 9 month holding deal never executed the contract. montgomery_county_fairgrounds_coliseum

Another source tells that Premier Health and the University of Dayton will partner to buy the land.  Montgomery County Administrator Joe Tuss just met with Premier Health this afternoon.

UPDATE:  A couple hours after we broke this story, this Joint Statement Regarding the Montgomery County Fairgrounds Property was released.

On behalf of Premier Health and the University of Dayton, please see the following statement:

“As neighboring institutions, the University of Dayton and Premier Health have long collaborated on community and economic development initiatives. As neighbors to the Fairgrounds, we have an interest in how it is ultimately developed and that it complements the growth and positive momentum in this important area of our community.  We are in discussions with the City and County on how we might help support redevelopment of this community asset.”

Miami Valley Actor Appears in Christmas Themed Film BELIEVE- Opening Nationwide Today.

December 2, 2016 By Dayton Most Metro

scottsummitt_headshot_2016

scOtt summitt

Miami Valley native scOtt summitt represents the Gem City on the silver screen this holiday when he appears in the upcoming feature film BELIEVE, opening across the nation this December.

“I play a character named Charlie,” summitt says. “He’s a salt of the earth, no nonsense kind of fellow. A simple man with a big heart. He’s the right hand man to the lead character in his journey towards finding his hope again.”

The film was shot in Bristol and Grundy, Virginia earlier this year and completed post- production in Los Angeles in time for its December holiday release.

While the film has a holiday theme to it, summitt says the movie has an inspiring story that resonates with a lot of people and families.

“I really like the message of the film,” summitt explains. “The story’s about finding one’s hope during troubling times. It also touches on subjects like unemployment and homelessness, which provides a very timely and realistic backdrop for the story.”

Ryan O’Quinn, the star and one of the executive producers of the faith-based film, and writer- director Billy Dickson watched multiple casting auditions before seeing summitt’s audition submission for their project.

“We saw actors from New Orleans to New York and everywhere in between,” O’Quinn says. “In my opinion, one of the standouts was scOtt summitt.”

summitt’s casting came quickly via a self tape audition submitted through his talent agency.

“It was wild because it happened so fast,” summitt says. “My agent sent me the casting info on a Sunday night, I taped & submitted my scenes on Monday morning, and got the call that same evening. All within 24 hours! Later that week, I was in Bristol, Virginia for a month long shoot on the film.”believe_scottsummitt_still2016

“His ability to authentically play the everyman character was a perfect compliment to my character and his genuine delivery in the film is truly a standout performance,” O’Quinn says of his co-star. “I enjoyed every minute on set with scOtt and look forward to any opportunity to work with him again.”

summitt, who grew up in the northern suburb of Vandalia, credits Dayton for giving him his unofficial start in the motion picture business.

“I’ve always loved movies since I was young, and you can say I cut my teeth on making movies growing up in Dayton,” summitt says.

“I used to shoot little films with the neighborhood kids on my Dad’s Super 8 camera,” summitt remembers. “Fantasy, spy films, silly stuff mostly. Nothing that would win any Oscars, but it certainly helped me to learn the process of film-making from the ground up.”believe_poster

The Christmas-themed film is written, produced and directed by Billy Dickson and stars Ryan O’Quinn (DAD DUDES, ALIAS, THAT THING YOU DO), Shawnee Smith (ANGER MANAGEMENT, BECKER), Danielle Nicolet (CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE), Isaac Ryan Brown (BLACKISH, HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER), Kevin Sizemore (FEAR THE WALKING DEAD, WOODLAWN), and David DeLuise (WIZARDS OF WAVERLY PLACE).

BELIEVE opens in theaters nationwide
on Friday, December 2nd.

About scOtt summitt:

scOtt summitt* is a professional actor and a proud member of SAG-AFTRA. Raised in Dayton, he has worked in theatre, film, television, regional commercials, web series, and improv comedy in LA and the Midwest. Upcoming projects include roles in the feature film BELIEVE, the upcoming mockumentary film BOY BAND, and the upcoming Comedy Central series DETROITERS in 2017.

MAN CALLED OVE Returns and LOVING & MOONLIGHT Stay at THE NEON!

December 1, 2016 By Jonathan McNeal

2410c881d-ce06-8d19-1c0709c9f6ea9edbHello Everyone!

Thanksgiving weekend was bustling at THE NEON. Many thanks to everyone who came out to support our two award-winning films. Speaking of awards, we were very happy to read about MOONLIGHT cleaning up at the Gotham Awards this week (the first big awards of the season). Over the past two years, the Gotham Awards have predicted the Oscar for “Best Picture” (SPOTLIGHT and BIRDMAN)…thus we think MOONLIGHT will continue to be a major player this year.

We will hold both LOVING and MOONLIGHT for another week. In addition, we have one more treat to rotate back into the mix – A MAN CALLED OVE. We had to let go of OVE last week because we had other commitments…but now, due to popular demand and the fact that we have space, we’re bringing OVE back for a handful of screenings. Don’t let it slip by!

This Saturday will mark the beginning of the Family Holiday Film Series . On Saturdays in December, we’ll present films that are suitable for the entire family – sponsored by The Dayton Holiday Festival, Channel 99.9 and THE NEON. These films are FREE for children 12 and under and only $2 for general admission. On December 3 at Noon, we’ll screen ARTHUR CHRISTMAS . On December 10, we’ll screen HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS – starring Jim Carrey. And lastly, on December 17, we’ll screen the holiday classic IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE (the big screen is the best way to see it). Please spread the word with your friends and neighbors…we’d like to see packed auditoriums each week.

Our friends at 4Mary.org have two more screenings of APPARITION HILL on the books. “Join 4Mary.Org for a night at the movies! A few years ago, 4Mary.Org organized screenings of the independent film THE TRIUMPH, and it was a terrific success. Now, from the same director, comes the new feature film APPARITION HILL about an unlikely group of pilgrims who journey to the same little-known village of Medjugorje. Two screenings remain: Thurs Dec 8 at 7:30pm and Mon Dec 12 at 7:30pm. Tickets are $10 each and are only available online via this LINK. All proceeds benefit the 4Mary Youth Pilgrimage to Fatima in 2017. For more info, contact [email protected]” (taken from press notes) To watch a trailer for this film, click this LINK.

We just received permission to have a preview screening of NOCTURNAL ANIMALS on Thursday, December 8 at 7:30. This was one of my “Top 3” films at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. It’s a stylish and dark thriller from famous fashion designer Tom Ford, and I’m so glad we’re able to bring it to town. (My other 2 favorites from the festival were MOONLIGHT and LA LA LAND.) I’ll provide more details about this film in next week’s newsletter.

Don’t forget that we offer NEON Gift Certificates in $5 and $10 denominations – perfect for all of the film lovers in your life! Gift certificates are available in our lobby during traditional hours of operation.

Thanks for your continued support!
We hope to see you soon,
Jonathan

YWCA Dayton announces 2017 Women of Influence

December 1, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

ycollage17 YWCA Dayton will honor eight women during its 2017 Women of Influence awards luncheon on March 9, 2017, noon to 1 pm, at the Dayton Convention Center. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the award; with an average attendance of 800, it is the single largest daytime nonprofit event in Dayton.

Since 1998, the YWCA Dayton WOI Awards have recognized and honored the most influential women in the Dayton area, women who have made a difference in our community through their dedication to the YWCA mission of empowering women, eliminating racism and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all.

Honorees in the Women of Influence Class of 2017 are:

  •  Amanda Wright Lane, international aviation advocate
  •  Carmen Gooden, co-founder and executive director, Linda Vista Inc.
  •  Sandy Gudorf, president, Downtown Dayton Partnership
  •  Michelle Riley, CEO, The Foodbank
  •  Judy Cook, former mayor, City of Oakwood
  •  Maj. Wendy Stiver, Dayton Police Department
  •  Stacy Thompson, vice president and regional manager for corporate responsibility banking, KeyBank

Additionally, Jeraldyne Blunden, founder of Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, will be honored posthumously with the 2017 Women of Influence Lifetime Achievement Award.

Says YW CEO Shannon Isom, “YWCA Dayton, its Board of Directors and the community are excited about Women of Influence every year; this year is especially significant as it marks 20 years of recognizing influential women in our region. I continue to be encouraged by the number of nominators who insightfully recognize that the fortitude and dedication of these women change lives, industry and our community. This is the legacy of YWCA.”

Honorees were selected from a pool of more than 70 nominations by YWCA leadership and the volunteer WOI Committee, led this year by Chair Anita Moore, owner of A. Moore Consulting LLC, and Co-chair Jenny Michael, vice president of marketing and corporate communications at CareSource.

The Women of Influence luncheon serves as the largest fundraiser for YWCA Dayton. Sponsorship opportunities, program advertising and ticket information are available at www.ywcadayton.org.
