Numerous Oscar Nominations for Films at THE NEON

January 24, 2017 By Jonathan McNeal

Hello Most Metro!

We were all set to move forward with JACKIE this weekend, but the execs at Lionsgate (the distributor for LA LA LAND) were insistent that we hold their hit for another week…and with good reasons. 1) LA LA LAND is still performing well. 2) LA LA LAND just scored the highest number of Oscar nominations ever received – 14 in all (tying with ALL ABOUT EVE and TITANIC). 3) In just under 4 weeks, LA LA LAND has become our #2 “Highest Grossing Film Ever” at THE NEON. Over the course of this upcoming weekend, it will likely move into the #1 spot! All that said, we will hold both LA LA LAND and 20TH CENTURY WOMEN for another week. I know that many of you are anxious to see Natalie Portman’s Oscar-nominated performance, but we promise that JACKIE will open on Feb. 3.

Speaking of Oscars, NEON titles performed very well this year. Past/current films that received nominations are: MOONLIGHT, MANCHESTER BY THE SEA, LOVING, NOCTURNAL ANIMALS, A MAN CALLED OVE, THE LOBSTER, 20TH CENTURY WOMEN, LA LA LAND, and LIFE, ANIMATED. Nominees that are still on their way to us include JACKIE, ELLE, THE RED TURTLE, I AM NOT YOUR NEGRO, TONI ERDMANN, and all of the OSCAR NOMINATED SHORTS (and possibly more). Of all the nominations, a couple “snubs” stood out to me. Annette Bening is absent from the list for 20TH CENTURY WOMEN. The film was recognized for “Best Screenplay,” but her role deserved recognition. Secondly, I was disappointed to not see EAGLE HUNTRESS among the nominations. Though “Best Documentary” is full of heavy hitters, I think this stunning but subtle, quiet film speaks to many issues and deserved more recognition.

For showtimes and descriptions of numerous special events at THE NEON, visit our official site: www.neonmovies.com

We hope to see you soon!

Jonathan

Oscar Nominations Are Out And Dayton Is Represented

January 24, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

This morning at 8:18 am the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominees for the 89th annual Academy Awards.

LA LA Land leads the pack with the most nominations- 14 tying the record set by All About Eve in 1950 and Titanic in 1997.  The Miami Valley connection to this movie is John Legend, who served as an Executive Producer as well as an actor in the film.

Neon Manager Jonathan McNeal predicted the success of LA LA Land in his report from the Toronto International Film Festival this past Sept right here on MostMetro:

This splashy, colorful, song-and-dance musical harkens memories of a bygone era of the Hollywood studio system.  But even more, its influence is from one of my favorite musical directors – Jacques Demy.  The opening scene, shot on an L.A. highway, will blow your mind and immediately had me scribble YOUNG GIRLS OF ROCHEFORT in my notes.  Starring Emma Stone (who will clearly be nominated for an Oscar) and Ryan Gosling, this film had me on my feet immediately as the “The End” appeared on screen.  For the rest of the night, melodies swirled in my head and merely walking down the street was accompanied by the film’s infectious score.  I can’t wait to obtain the soundtrack and see the film again!

Another Oscar nominated film with a Dayton connection is Moonlight.  Nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay,Best Supporting Actor and Actress and Best Cinematography, this film  chronicles the life of a young black man from childhood to adulthood as he struggles to find his place in the world while growing up in a rough neighborhood of Miami.

Centerville native Hannah Beachler, who was a Wright State graduate served as the Production Designer for Moonlight. As reported by Refinery 29, the 46-year-old mother of one spends her days mood-boarding whimsical worlds, decorating imaginary homes, offices, and neighborhoods, and working with the director as well as set dressers, hair, makeup, and costume departments to achieve just the right vibes for each story. “Everything you’re seeing on screen is the production designer, outside of the camera work and lighting,” she explains. “I’m basically the architect of a movie’s visuals.”

To see the full list of all nominees click here.

The 2017 Academy Awards will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and take place at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood. ABC will broadcast the show live on Sunday, Feb. 26, starting at 7:30 pm. Look for local watch parties at The Neon, Little Art Theatre as well as The Plaza Theater in Miamisburg.

Metaphorically Speaking presents Love, Sex, & Poetry: ‘Til Death Do Us Part

January 22, 2017 By Ruthie Moreland

Producing gritty, sexy, energetic, poetry slam competitions is how it all began nearly four years ago for the poetry collective Metaphorically Speaking. Today the group has morphed into a major player in Dayton’s arts and entertainment community. The group has moved from producing monthly poetry slam competitions to producing full stage productions to nearly sell-out crowds. On Saturday, January 28 at Victoria Theatre Metaphorically Speaking presents Love, Sex, & Poetry: ‘Til Death Do Us Part, a tale of the highs and lows of the journey to find love and the sacrifices we make to hold on to it.

Love, Sex & Poetry features Metaphorically Speaking founders/spoken word artists Tony “Ace Metaphor” Nalls and Jay Martinez. Spoken word artist Tripp Fontane, comedian BooMan, lyricist JiGi, and actress/dancer Vanae Iesha round out the cast with DJ Big Al and Musical Director Terence O. Hayes, Jr. providing the soundtrack and musical backdrop for the show. “This show is different than what our fans are used to seeing from us,” said Nalls, “It’s not a slam, it’s a production in two acts with a lot of moving parts, high and lows. We want the audience to feel every emotion possible…sad, happy, excited, and angry. We want them to feel a part of the production.”

Metaphorically Speaking has come a long way from its start as a monthly poetry slam competition. Early shows saw modest turnouts but commitment, hard work, and dedication have yielded significant growth for the group. Each performance at the Victoria Theatre has grown with 900 attending the April 2016 Battle of the Sexes. The group seeks to sell out the venue for Love, Sex & Poetry. “This journey has been amazing,” said Natasha R. Moreland Spears, the groups manager, “They say slow and steady wins the race, and Metaphorically Speaking is winning in the pursuit to bring poetry and the arts to the masses.”

Metaphorically Speaking is not a small, exclusive group of artists. It is a collective that incorporates all forms of art to support and engage the broadest aspects of the community. This is most evident in the group’s work with elementary and high school students through partnerships with the Boys & Girls Club of Dayton, HRC and Dayton Public Schools, and the Montgomery County Juvenile Department. “Poetry is an amazing form of expression,” said co-founder Jay Martinez. “It’s a place to dump your secrets, your fears, and your hopes without judgement or vulnerability.” Metaphorically Speaking is creating movement of poetry and the arts that is expanding; broadening both its artistic and academic components.

The four partners of Metaphorically Speaking, Tony Nalls, Jay Martinez, Natasha R. Moreland Spears, and Frank “Buddy” Pitts, are excite about the future of the collective. From the launch of an academic arm later this year to the growth of its entertainment endeavors, the collective is positioning itself for longevity. “We are methodically and consistently expanding our brand,” said Pitts, the company’s strategist and graphic designer. “As creatives, we are always looking at new and innovative ways to expand our territory while remaining true to who MS is and to our fans.”

Metaphorically Speaking’s Love, Sex & Poetry: ‘Til Death Do Us Part will take place from 8-11 p.m. on Saturday, January 28, at the Victoria Theatre, 138 N. Main Street in Dayton. This show is rated mature for language and adult content. Tickets range from $33.50 to $83.50 and may be purchased at www.ticketcenterstage.com. To stay up to date on all things Metaphorically Speaking, check out their Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat pages @metaphoricallyspeakingdayton.

It’s Restaurant Week in the Miami Valley

January 22, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

Look back at the first restaurant week promotion!

I have a particular fondness for Restaurant Week, as it was my baby when I was president of the Miami Valley Restaurant Association in 2005.  When we started it, it was a struggle to get restaurants to sign on.  The 3 course meal deal was offered by $20.05, to reflect the year.

The first year I think we had about a dozen restaurants when we kicked  off the promotion and we got up to 29 by the actual week of the promotion.   We asked the eateries to donate $1 of each meal to charity, a component that is not a part of most restaurant weeks around the country, but I really believed that this would help the public embrace this promotion.

Our first charity partner was The Food Bank with our slogan being “when you eat, they eat.” We strategically picked January, as that is one of the slowest months for restaurants and even though the restaurants signed up, many of them were skeptical about the event.  But the residents of the Miami Valley embraced the promo right away.   And then the restaurateurs started to believe, “I have never seen anything like it,” said Josef Reif, owner of l’Auberge, in Kettering. The phone started ringing last Friday and by noon Saturday all spaces in both dining rooms were reserved for the entire week.”  Then restaurant critic for the Dayton Daily News  Ann Heller interviewed local owners and one Oregon District eatery said  business tripled overnight.

Now a dozen years later, the promotion is still going strong and while the price goes up a penny each year, a 3 course meal for $20.17 is still a great deal. It originally ran just Sun – Friday, but now Restaurant Week runs Sunday – Sunday, Jan 22- 29th, giving you even more chances to dine out.   The program has changed a little as well, with restaurants now having the option to offer meals for $25.17, $30.17 and $35.17 as well and places like Park City Club and Roost offer options at all price points. Other eateries offer deals for 2 like Chappy’s Tap Room & Grille 2 dine for $35.17 offer or Kabuki’s sushi dinner for 2 for $35.17.  Some restaurants offer 4 courses like Wheat Penny and The Melting Pot.  Many more will pair beer and wine specials at discounted prices.

I tend to use restaurant week to visit newer restaurants and this year that includes Caramella’s Italian Kitchen, Ellie’s Restaurant and Bakery at Mills Park Hotel, Smiths Boathouse, Wandering Griffin and Zink’s Prime Meats and Fine Wines

You can view all the menus here.
The other thing to be aware of is that many of the restaurants participating are not open every day of restaurant week.  Be aware of the restaurant’s hours, some open days that aren’t usually open and some are closed on Sunday & Monday.

Here are our suggestions to get the most out of Restaurant Week:

1. Reserve Early

Popular Restaurant Week choices will be booked up quickly, so the sooner you get on the phone to make your reservations, the better. Reservations for dinner early in the week (Monday – Wednesday) tend to be easier to get than Friday and Saturday. Some of the more casual restaurants don’t take reservations, so arriving before or after the dinner rush will minimize your wait.

The options from elé Cake Co. Bistro & Wine Bar

2. Manage Your Expectations

It is Restaurant Week and most restaurants offer fairly limited choices on the Restaurant Week menu, so if you’re a very picky eater, it might not be the best option for you. Menu’s are predetermined for price, volume and ease of service, so don’t be surprised if substitutions aren’t possible. Frequently, the Restaurant Week menu won’t include a restaurant’s “signature” dishes, but you can often order them a la carte if you’d really like to give them a try. Some menu’s may actually differ from what’s listed here, due to product availability.

3. Understand the Price

The $20.17 – 35.17 prix-fixe meal doesn’t include beverages, tip or tax. Beverages can add up quickly, so if you’re concerned about your budget, ask about prices before you order. On the other hand, since your meal is discounted, this might be the best time to splurge on a bottle of wine. Many restaurants offer multiple price points options, so you can decide how much to spend.

4. Vegetarians Beware

Some of the menu’s don’t offer a lot of options for you, but you’re probably not surprised by that. On the other hand places like Christopher’s and Meadowlark always offer creative and tasty options.

Caribbean Chicken Tacos from El Meson

5. Tip Your Server Well

Just because you’re getting a discount on your dinner doesn’t mean that the waiter or waitress is getting a break on their rent this month, so tip generously if you get good service. And as a former waitress, let me remind you 20% is the baseline for good service these days.

And don’t worry if you can’t get to all the participating places, there’s always Summer Restaurant Week July 23 – 30th.

Have You Renewed Your Dog License? Deadline Jan 31st

January 21, 2017 By Dayton Most Metro

Licenses are to be renewed annually by January 31st. If you obtain a dog after January 31st, you are required to license your dog immediately.  A penalty equal to the cost of the dog license applies after 30 days of acquiring your pet. Unless confined in a registered kennel, dogs must wear their license tag at all times. All dogs discovered without a dog license tag are subject to impounding, sale, or destruction. No refunds are given on dog licenses.

If your dog’s tag is lost, the County Auditor will issue a duplicate tag for $5.00 when provided with proof of licensing. Transferring the ownership of your dog to another person must be done through the Auditor’s Office and costs $5.00.

Ohio law requires dogs over 3 months of age to be licensed. The county is authorized to hold a licensed dog for up to 14 days after mailing a notice of its capture to the owner before it can either be humanely destroyed or adopted. Unlicensed dogs may be destroyed or adopted out after being held for 3 days.

A dog that is not wearing his/her license is held for only 3 days so make sure your dog has his/her license on!

Why License Your Dog? IT’S THE LAW!
If your dog is ever missing, a dog license tag provides a quick and accurate way of notifying you if someone else finds your pet. It is also Ohio law that all dogs are licensed:

  • All dogs three months of age or older must be licensed. No dog shall be harbored, kept, or owned without displaying a valid registration tag. (The law applies regardless of whether the dog is kept inside or out.) ORC (Ohio Revised Code) 955.21
  • A penalty shall be assessed if dog license is not secured on or before January 31st, or within 30 days after the dog becomes 3 months of age, or is brought from outside the state. ORC 955.01
  • Certificates or registration and registration tags shall be valid only during the CALENDAR year in which they are issued and during the first thirty-one (31) days of the following calendar year. ORC 955.09

There are 4 methods to apply for/renew registration:

1. If you received a dog license reminder and want to renew by mail, correct all license information on the form, if necessary. You can make copies to add new dogs, if needed. Select fee, indicate whether your dog(s) has been spayed or neutered, and sign and date form. Mail the top half of form, check or money order made out to Montgomery County Dog License to the following address:

MONTGOMERY COUNTY DOG LICENSE
PO BOX 972
DAYTON, OH 45422-1031

Include veterinarian certification for the spay/neuter fee exclusion, if necessary. Please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope along with your application and payment so that your tag(s) may be sent to you.

2. Apply/renew online and pay with a credit card, debit card or e-check. Your tag(s) will be sent to you. If you need a veterinarian’s certification for the spay/neuter fee exclusion, you must use the mail-in option or the 4 outposts listed in method no. 4. Three-year and permanent licenses are not available online.

3. Print a blank application and mail it and your check to the address on the application. Include veterinarian certification for the spay/neuter fee exclusion, if necessary.

4. Go to any of our outposts. If you have a spay/neuter fee exclusion and need to provide veterinarian certification, breed registry number, or hunting license number, you must go to the Auditor’s Licensing Office or the Animal Resource Center.

The Century Bar Named Midwest’s best-kept boozy secret

January 19, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

The Tasting Table just released their top 8 list of Whiskey Businesses in America and our own beloved C Bar made the list.   Here’s how the story goes”

There’s something so perfect about a simple glass of whiskey. The amber-tinted spirit has charmed generations of drinkers across the globe, from Ireland to Scotland to Japan and, of course, the United States.

This winter, steal away to one of these eight whiskey emporiums and indulge in a dram (or two or three . . .) of the best darn booze the world has to offer.

Read about the others here

⑦ The Century Bar

Dayton, OH

OK, OK, we know what you’re thinking. Dayton? As in Ohio?? But trust us, you’re going to want to check your doubts at the door when it comes to this world-class whiskey joint. As the Midwest’s best-kept boozy secret, this distillery-turned-saloon has been charming those in the know since 1862. Today, Century’s historic back bar is a testament to American spirits, with stained glass skylights; a long, gleaming copper-topped bar; and a handful of bourbon barrels repurposed into tables and stained to match the exact hue of Maker’s 46. The dedicated folks behind the bar are known to put on a slew of themed tastings, brand-specific events and educational classes throughout the month, attracting locals and thirsty out-of-towners alike. Start packing your bags, whiskey fans, because this is one tavern well worth the trip.

Of course this is just one of many accolades the bar has received since going morphing into a bourbon bar under the tutelage of Joe Head.  The Bourbon Review has named The Century Bar to their Top Bourbon Bars multiple years,  Men’s Journal  named it as one of The 10 Best Bourbon Bars in America  and Travel and Leisure included The Century in their round up of the  “Best Whisky Bars in America.”

Dayton’s Firecreek Goes to Nashville

January 19, 2017 By Dayton Most Metro

It’s not often people can say that someone from  their hometown has an opportunity to make it big. But that is exactly what Daytonians can say about their hometown bluegrass band Firecreek, founded by Dayton native Ashley Knapp and Eaton native Cody Doench, both of whom are United States Army veterans.

Some of you may have seen them performing in Dayton and surrounding areas within the past few years, but come March the Firecreek band is Nashville bound to record their first CD after accepting a once in a lifetime opportunity from bluegrass’s current number one band Flatt Lonesome.

“Were excited, were nervous, but most importantly were looking forward to taking this next step and opening this new door.” Says front woman Ashley Knapp.

Whether you like the traditional or the newer sounds of bluegrass, this band has something for every fan to enjoy. The band is holding a fundraiser to help cover their expenses on February 18th at the American Legion located at 126 East 4th street, Franklin, Ohio 45005 from 6-10 pm…everyone is invited to enjoy live bands, auctions, and raffles. The band also has a GoFundMe page where donations are being accepted.

To get a listen and look at this hometown band you can go to their Facebook page at www.Facebook.com/FirecreekOhio.

For booking information the band can be reached at (937) 607-7431.

Dayton is known for its innovation and creativity, let’s show support for this Dayton original!
