March 13, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

Featuring the best dishes from all around Tamriel (a continent in the game Elder Scrolls), Lily’s Bistro is excited to host The Elder Scrolls Feast on Thursday, March 16 at 6pm.

The feast is the  brainchild of Lily’s Bistro’s Sous Chef James Burton, who is an avid  gamer. “If you’re a fan of the games, or just a fan of a big old feasts,  you should check out this event! Gamers unite!” said Burton.

Inspired by the classic video game series, The Elder Scrolls Feast is a three-course meal served family style around communal tables. The dishes and drinks are taken directly from game dialogue and texts from more than twenty years worth of games set in the popular fantasy world.

Gamers and foodies alike will be treated to Velothi Cabbage Soup (3360 Stamina Duration: 35 Minutes), Hare wrapped in grape leaves with a garlic sauce (2310 Health Duration: 60 Minutes), Falinesti Forbidden Fruit (1296 Magicka & Stamina Duration: 60 Minutes), and of course, Sweet Rolls (Restore 5 Health) along with many more heaping dishes.

Your tickets include the three-course feast, all items listed on the menu, one specialty drink, tax and tip. Additional meads and Elder Scrolls cocktails will be available to purchase! Also, maybe you’ll find out who stole your sweet roll!

“I’ve enjoyed learning more and more about Elder Scrolls, because James has invested a lot of time and thought into this feast,” Emily Mendenhall, owner of Lily’s Bistro said. “We’re always excited to do things like this that make a meal into an experience that you remember.”

For those interested in The Elder Scrolls Feast, the family style meal costs $49 (includes tax and tip) and takes place on Thursday, March 16 at Lily’s Bistro. Tickets are available at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-elder-scrolls-feast-tickets-32293128617 – get them today, no lollygagging!

March 13 Mystery Monday

March 13, 2017 By Dayton Most Metro

Did you correctly identify the  March 6th Mystery Monday photo?  We got guesses of Cox Arboretum, Woodlawn Cemetery and Yellow Springs, but none of those were correct.   Congratulations to Miranda of Beavercreek for being drawn from the list of correct answers to win 2 free Rapid Fired Pizza‘s!

This is photographer Bill Franz’s favorite spot at the University of Dayton and it holds his favorite sculpture by Hamilton Dixon. It is Serenity Pines, a site that honors those who died while they were students, faculty or staff members at UD.

When someone dies, like UD basketball player Steve McElvene did a few months ago, Hamilton Dixon takes a metal leaf he has crafted to Dayton Stencil. They inscribe the name of the student on the leaf and Hamilton Dixon attaches the leaf to one of his metal trees.

It is only steps away from a busy campus, but Serenity Pines is a quiet, calming place.

So here’s this week’s challenge for you.

Do you know where this photo was taken?  If so please enter your answer here:

http://goo.gl/forms/dyU55fzc48

We’ll choose a winner from those with correct answers to win 2 Rapid Fired Pizza’s.  Now with 13 locations and coming soon to Englewood and Beavercreek!

We’ll post the winner next Monday with details about the photo as well as a new photo to challenge your knowledge of the Dayton area.

Thanks for playing and good luck!

ST. Patrick’s Day – Dublin Pub Style

March 12, 2017 By Guest Contributor

ST. PATRICK’S DAY FOR PROFESSIONALS
This is what it’s like to be the first person to order a drink at 5:30am.
(a users guide to frequent questions)

1. The #1 question is “How Much?” Well it is only $10 to get in on both March 16 and March 17. An even better deal is if you come in on March 16 and pay $10, your wristband is good for St. Patrick’s Day as well – two for the price of one – what a bargain! March 16 THE MENUS will be playing The Dublin Pub for the first time kicking of St. Patrick’s Day. Also available ONLY ON MARCH 16 is the “MENUS VIP EXPERIENCE”. It is $50.00, and you will get admission to both March 16 & 17, eight tickets to use for beer, cocktails, or food under the tent only, and a St. Patrick’s Day souvenir cup which turns green when yor are happy – this is a $75 value for $50, plus your beer and food ticktes are good for both days. If you decide to come just on St. Patrick’s Day it is still just $10 to get in Ohio’s largest St. Patrick’s Day party.

2. Make sure you have a safe ride home, use the free cab service provided by Montgomery County Prosecutor Matt Heck, ARRIVE SAFE PROGRAM, 937-449-9999. OR USE UBER!!!! If you have not tried UBER, get with the rest of the world, it’s about the coolest way to get around town while partaking in Irish Revelry safely. Designated Drivers are another good choice.

3. PARKING, we recommend you park in the Holy Trinity lot just across Fifth St from the pub. DO NOT PARK in the Oregon District neighborhood, but there are many public lots, on street parking and free parking all around the pub, as well as some pay lots.

4. We open at 5:30am, and due to the crowd size, we have streamlined our opening to ensure we can get in as many people in at 5:30am. We will have security at a table at 4:30am and they will be doing ID’s, wristbands, taking $10 cover charge, and the 1st 100 people will get a ticket to redeem for a free St. Patrick’s Day T-shirt provided by Absolute. Those that get here by 4:30am, will be able to get their wristbands, and get back in line so there will be no wait at 5:30am when we open the doors. The line will form at the entrance in our BIG TENT – and will wrap around the corner of 5th St and Wayne Ave towards Francos.

5. If you don’t want to fight crowds inside the pub, the tent will be fully functional at 5:30am. There will be beer and liquor, as well as food and merchandise available at 5:30am in the heated tent.

6. The Big tent will have two draft beer trucks, a Jameson bar stocked with Jameson and Absolute Vodka Bombs and cocktails, a small bar upstairs on the deck as well as one in the covered patio, jello shots, a food area selling hamburgers, hot dogs, Guinness Brats, Pub Fries, Fried Pickles, and Fish. There will also be a merchandise area and an ATM, as all sales under the tents are cash except the Jameson Bar and Merchandise which will accept credit cards.

7. FREE SHUTTLE: There is a Free Shuttle that starts at 10am in front of The Dublin Pub on the corner of 5th St and Wayne Ave. It will run every 30 min to Flanagans Pub by UD. It is free and runs till midnight.

8. Our Facebook page and website has our full itinerary.WWW.DUBPUB.COM.

9. Inside the pub you will find our full service restaurant serving our limited menu, but with all the Irish favorites. There will be live music inside starting at 11am, but Celtic Rock will be playing all day long inside. We have an ATM as well inside, so for those keeping score at home, we have two ATM’s overall on site.

10. There is no GREEN BEER on site, so please don’t ask – we are an authentic Irish Pub and we pride ourselves in the Guinness perfect pint. If you want Green Beer, we suggest you enroll in Miami University – today. Here is a link for enrollment:  http://www.miami.muohio.edu/admission/admission/index.html

11. If you don’t like crowds, basically, St. Patrick’s Day may not be for you, but if you look for the best time to come and participate in the revelry, we recommend either when we open, late morning or early afternoon. You will still have Guinness & Jameson, you will still see Irish Step Dancing, and you will hear amazing Irish music. The 5:30am spot is a sight to see, and only for the TRUE PROFESSIONALS. Late night will be busy, and the show is amazing, and the people are the best St. Patrick’s Day revelers in the world!!!

12. The tent will do last call at 12:30 and completely closed by 1am. The Pub will be open till 2am and the kitchen open until 1am.
13. NO BAGS or BACKPACKS please, we will not let them in.

Bishop Says Eat Corned Beef & Cabbage For St. Patrick’s Day

March 12, 2017 By Dayton Most Metro

Corned Beef and Cabbage

If you’re a “good catholic”  you know that meat is a no-no on Friday’s during lent.  But this year St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Friday, and it’s tradition to eat your Corned Beef & Cabbage while you’re drinking your green beer.  What to do?

Well, Bishop David L. Ricken of  the Catholic Diocese of Green Bay has declared that you do not have to abstain from eating meat on the March 17 holiday.

“Many St. Patrick’s Day celebrations occur on this day, honoring this faithful servant of Christ who converted thousands and built churches, forming dioceses across all of Ireland,” Ricken says in a statement.

“To honor his work of making disciples of Jesus and in accord with the norm of law (Canon 1253), I grant to all Catholics of the Diocese of Green Bay a dispensation from abstinence from meat and meat products on The Feast of St. Patrick in the year 2017. I encourage all who make use of this dispensation to engage in another sacrificial or charitable act that day.”

RIP Awesome Yogurt

March 11, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

For any retail or restaurant owner having to face closing down is never easy.  Most often entrepreneurs struggle with the decision, not wanting to let others down and yet being at the end of their rope.  I know these overwhelming feelings first hand from my days as a business owner.

Naomi Anderson Fogel opened her Awesome Yogurt shop in August of 2012  in The Shops at 3000 at the Far Hills Avenue-East Dorothy Lane intersection.  The mother of 3 did her homework, checking several franchises and finally decided to operate on her own.   She became a huge part of the community, often hosting fundraisers for local schools and appearing in parades, the perfect spot for a birthday, celebration of just a sweet treat.

And yesterday she announced  that the doors would not be opening again at her Kettering frozen yogurt shop.  I had a chance to ask her about it and she let us know “My family life changed a lot over the last few months, and deciding to close Awesome Yogurt came as a relief. One person can only do so much.”

I asked her to share some of her best memories:
Fogel:  “My favorite memories are  anything having to do with people making connections. A few examples of this include kids meeting up after school, couples on dates and grandparents bringing their grandkids. I’m also in LOVE with all my employees. They’re amazing people and I’m so fortunate to have been the first job for many. They watched my yogurt shop baby when I couldn’t be there.“

Next I asked her to share some lessons learned that she could share with other entrepreneurs:
Fogel: ‘There’s a multitude of things I learned but I think the most important is to not link MY value as a human with the business. Because Awesome Yogurt  wasn’t a franchise, and I made all the decisions, it was easy to take any criticisms personally. Consequently, it became depressing. However, learning to compartmentalize that and continue to be a happy cheerful person ultimately became my decision.”
And  finally- I asked her if she can still eat Frozen yogurt?
Fogel:  “Genuine frozen yogurt is my absolute favorite! Now I go to Centerville, to a little local shop called SoYo.”

And then yesterday this letter showed up:

Dear Awesome Yogurt,

Thank you for everything. Thank you for giving me an escape from a part-time job I hated. Thank you for giving me extra spending money – many Christmases and birthdays were made possible because of you. Thank you for teaching me how to skin a kiwi, how to core a pineapple, and how to perfectly hull a strawberry. Thank you for teaching me what on earth mochi was, how to make waffles without overflowing the iron, and how to keep marshmallows fresh (and also how to spell marshmallow). Thank you for teaching me how to cover max surface area with one stroke of the mop – and the value of a clean floor.

Thank you, Awesome Yogurt, for my memories. Thank you for “Foamy Fridays,” when Sean and I would use an entire bottle of dish soap in the sink and watch the kitchen fill with bubbles – and throw them at each other. Thank you for charades at Christmas parties and silly gift exchanges. Thank you for letting me use your cups to learn the Cup Song and then perform it for customers. Thank you for New Kids on the Block blasted full volume at closing time, and dancing with the broom. Thank you for the time CBS’s Big Brother had a frozen yogurt challenge on t.v., and I tried to mimic it during my next shift by sticking my head underneath the machine and pouring yogurt straight into my mouth while Danielle doubled over with laughter. It was a bad idea.

Thank you, Awesome Yogurt, for teaching me how to use a box cutter…and a can opener. The prominent scar on my left hand will never let me forget the time before we had a can opener when I tried to stab open a can of caramel with a knife – and missed. Thank you for the bruise I got on my butt when I slipped in the kitchen, and the several minutes of belly laughter that followed. Thank you for parade floats and birthday hats, Halloween parties and school fundraisers with lines of excited children snaking out the door.

Thank you, Awesome Yogurt, for Pup Cups – Josie’s favorite treat. Thank you for discounts honoring the hard work of teachers, first responders, and military personnel. Thank you for the excessive labels everywhere, and the time we even labeled ourselves. Thank you for the best tasting ice in Dayton – I still don’t know why that ice tasted so good in our water. Thank you for crafts and decorations – I can cut a perfect paper snowflake and write flawlessly on a chalkboard. Thank you for special events like Flyin’ to the Hoop, where we took half-court shots for free Piada and sold Sharpies for five dollars. I still remember how cold my hands got from reaching into the freezer, but I would do it again in a heartbeat. Thank you for Career Day. I had so much fun presenting to the middle-schoolers as a “small business owner.” Thank you for teaching me that yellow is the least popular spoon color…we’ll never know why.

Thank you, Awesome Yogurt, for everything. For new friends, and for bringing me closer to the old ones. Thank you for tears of joy and frustration. Thank you for loud laughter and constant smiles. Thank you for teaching me to sing louder, clean harder, and dance more. To the best part-time job in the world, for all this and more..thank you. Thank you for teaching our community, now and always, to make every day awesome.

With Love and Appreciation,

A Grateful Employee

And we’re betting that this just made Naomi’s day!  We certainly wish her well on the next chapter of her life and hope she continues to get affirmations like this that hard work and endless hours she put in made a difference in our community.

Ben & Jerry’s Cereal-Flavored Ice Cream

March 11, 2017 By Dayton Most Metro

They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and Ben & Jerry’s newest ice cream creations  are tapping into breakfast for inspiration.   The new lineup includes three flavors based on your favorite childhood breakfast cereals.  According to Ben & Jerry’s Flavor Guru:

“The sweet milk at the bottom of a cereal bowl is arguably the best part.

We wanted to take our flavor concepts and make people feel like a kid again, which is how we landed with our Cereal Splashback flavors.

There’s a flavor for every fan that will help bring them back to the prize-at-the-bottom-of-the-box days, watching Saturday-morning cartoons in pajamas.”

Here are the new 3 new Cereal Splashback, ice cream flavors available only at your local Scoop Shop.

Cocoa Loco

Chocolate cereal milk ice cream with a crisp chocolate cereal swirls.  Remember those special mornings when Mom let you have chocolate cereal instead of the regular kind? This is all of those magical mornings, churned into an ice cream flavor. All you need is your favorite cartoons.

Frozen Flakes

Cereal milk ice cream with crisp cereal swirls.  Get out your footie pajamas, because this is a cereal-ous blast from the past. Just add your favorite bowl, a big spoon, and settle into the comfiest spot on the couch.

Fruit Loot

Cereal milk ice cream with a crisp fruity cereal swirls.  It’s like if cereal, Saturday-morning cartoons, and superhero pajamas were an ice cream flavor. Everything but the prize at the bottom of the box (which you’d have to fight your sister for, anyway).

Look For the Pedal Wagon Around Town Now!

March 10, 2017 By Dayton Most Metro

Pedal Wagon got approved to operate and cruises are going out the next day. Jack says, “We had people wanting to get on board as soon as we were approved. We got an email from the city last night and cruises are going out tonight. It’s really awesome to see how accepting Daytonians are and how familiar they are with the Pedal Wagon concept as seen in Cincinnati, Columbus and other cities.”

The Pedal Wagon is a 15 person, pedal-powered, rolling party. You can reserve the entire Pedal Wagon for your group, or just part of it and get mixed and matched with other folks. You can choose from a variety of routes that uncover Dayton’s rich history, and “best kept secret” local establishments on pub crawls, corporate outings, tailgates and more. The Pedal Wagon’s hope is to be a small piece of the big picture of the Oregon District’s continuous growth.

The Pedal Wagon was founded in 2011, predominantly in Over the Rhine of Cincinnati, as a pub crawl to Cincinnati’s most eclectic downtown bars. Over the last four years, the Pedal Wagon has diversified their ride offerings to help showcase more of the city, and bring more business to local businesses downtown. The Pedal Wagon operates fourteen wagons year-round in Cincinnati and Columbus and has around 50 seasonal employees.

“We aim to provide a unique experience for our riders,” says Jen, the manager of Columbus and the new Dayton market. “We owe it to our partnering bars & restaurants for providing great service. We have set up a variety of routes and keep a constant line of communication open with them in order for operations to run smoothly. We have been talking to a lot of bars and restaurants in Dayton for some time now, and are excited to bring them more business starting tonight!”

The Pedal Wagon is voted in the top three outdoor activities on Trip Advisor in Cincinnati and has become an icon in Cincinnati and Columbus. “We are looking to become a part of the Oregon District too and give back to the community; while having fun, of course! Our main goal is to bring business to businesses and help expose Oregon District’s new and old establishments. Riders tend to book for events such as birthday parties, bachelorette and bachelor parties, company outings, family celebrations, and much more. People seem to be smiling non-stop and having a great time while riding with us. It really makes the job a lot easier when you know people are truly enjoying the service we’re providing.”

The Pedal Wagon is working with the City of Dayton right now to obtain a license and hope to get started as soon as the process is finished. For more details, or to book a ride on one of the Pedal Wagon’s cruises, visit www.PedalWagon.com or email Jen@PedalWagon.com

Kong: Skull Island an entertaining take on the primate king

March 9, 2017 By Tabari McCoy

KEY CAST MEMBERS: Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman, Toby Kebbell, Jason Mitchell, John Ortiz, Shea Whigham, Terry Notary, Tian Jang, Eugene Cordero, Thomas Mann and John C. Reilly

WRITER(S): Dan Gilroy and Max Borenstein and Derek Connolly; story by John Gatins

DIRECTOR(S): Jordan Vogt-Roberts

WEB SITE: http://kongskullislandmovie.com/HERE’S THE STORY: Set in 1973 near the height of the Vietnam conflict, Kong: Skull Island begins by introducing us to Bill Randa (John Goodman). Randa works for an agency known as Monarch and he believes there is something worth exploring on a recently discovered, uncharted island in the South Pacific. Fueled by a report from the Harvard education Houston Brooks (Corey Hawkins) and fellow biologist Sam Lin (Tian Jang), Randa and Brooks convinces a senator to let him piggyback on a mission by Landsat (the agency who’s satellite work discovered the remote terrain) to explore the island. And wouldn’t you know it – Randa is able to get the military escort he requests to accompany them there led by Col Preston Parker (Samuel L. Jackson), several of his best soldiers (Hawkins’ Straight Outta Compton co-star Jason Mitchell, Toby Kebbell and Shea Whigham among others) as well as the tracker (Tom Hiddleston) he hired … And an anti-war photographer in Mason Weaver (Brie Larson).

But once they arrive in the realm of the mysterious island, they are greeted by something no one (or maybe at least one of them) expected: A giant, monstrous ape (portrayed for the screen by Terry Notary) who does NOT take kindly to intrusive visitors. But despite Randa’s and Parker’s mutual desire to prove man is king, they soon learn that Kong – and the other species on the island – have a thing or two to shout about that …

WHO WILL LIKE THIS FILM THE MOST? People who enjoyed Godzilla (the Warner Bros. version, not the Matthew Broderick version as NO ONE should enjoy that); John C. Reilly fans; Jason Mitchell fans; people who enjoy well done B-movies; those who thought the Warner Bros. version of Godzilla should have had more teeth (no pun intended) to it; people who enjoy summer popcorn movies that arrive a few months early

WHO WON’T (OR SHOULDN’T) LIKE THIS MOVIE? People who hated Godzilla (both the Matthew Broderick and Warner Bros. versions) and/or The Legend of Tarzan; those who don’t enjoy monster movies; people who hate b-movie fare

SO, IS IT GOOD, BAD OR ABSOLUTELY AWFUL? A film with an awful 20 minute opening followed by an hour and 40 minutes of salvageable to actually quirky yet entertaining fare, Kong: Skull Island is a summer popcorn movie come a few months early … Because there are a couple of stale kernels mixed in with an otherwise decent bucket of fun.

There are two things that really make Kong: Skull Island fun – and those are the performance of John C. Reilly as an adopted Skull Island “native” and the presence of Kong (who is utilized properly in each instance) as portrayed by Terry Notary. Reilly’s performance is the perfect mix of fun and whimsical, giving the audience a character worth actually rooting for in a film otherwise devoid of one (save for the giant ape). Indeed, while Goodman and Jackson play their respective roles well – you KNOW what you’re getting from both within 30 seconds of seeing them – and Mitchell and Whigham add a nice bit of realistic-based humor, Reilly provides one that truly supplements the film with a sweet one while Kong is shown to only be a monster in stature, not in practice.

That’s all you pretty much you need to know about the movie … Save for the monstrous inhabitants of the island (Peter Jackson’s take on the king in his 2005 telling of the giant gorilla’s tale is pretty much replicated here, but with a more ominous, Lone Survivor tone) and the tribal natives, Skull Island covers familiar territory. And at times, some of that territory is a bit too familiar for its own good. Save for a more-important-than-you-realize-opening-sequence, the first 20 minutes of the film is bland but necessary exposition, the cast is forced to deliver some overtly-ominous dialogue and despite receiving top billing, Hiddleston and Larson don’t do anything remarkable in their roles as much as just play them efficiently. Throw in director Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ early homages to Michael Bay action movies (there are some sequences in here that seem straight out of Transformers) and you get an entertaining – but at times, mixed – bag.

In short, Kong: Skull Island is a lot like visiting your local zoo: There’s a lot to like … But when you pass through the monkey house, you’re gonna smell some things you wish you hadn’t before you get to the end.

OVERALL RATING (OUT OF FOUR POSSIBLE BUCKETS OF POPCORN):

Get Your ‘Spring’er on with Yellow Springs Brewery

March 8, 2017 By Dayton Most Metro

Come ready to party Yellow Springs-style wearing your tie-dye, flowing skirts and Birkenstocks. On Friday, March 10, 5:00 pm, Yellow Springs Brewery is throwing a party in their taproom to celebrate the release of Springer Golden Ale in 12-ounce cans. It will be distributed to restaurants, bars and retailers starting the week of March 13th, six-packs will retail for $9.99.

This signature beer is made with local Cascade hops from Heartland Hops in northwest Ohio near Fort Recovery. At 5.4% alcohol by volume, it is light, floral and perfect for drinking anytime. Springer Golden Ale is one of the originally brewed recipes at Yellow Springs Brewery and continues to be a customer favorite, especially as the weather turns warm and the world once again becomes green.

In addition to releasing Springer Golden Ale in cans and in honor of the spring equinox, the brewery also plans to have special variants of Springer Golden Ale on tap that day. “We are planning to have a few twists of Springer on tap that we believe not only enhance the beer but will also help welcome the long awaited coming of spring” says Chris Hutson, event coordinator at Yellow Springs Brewery. “Customers will be able to experience all things Yellow Springs at the release party, after all Springer was aptly named for the local residents. It’s our hope to offer folks a chance to come out of their winter hibernation as we usher in the changing of the seasons. Along with our special variants there are also plans for live accoustic music, food, flowers and a few tricks up our sleeves,” says Hutson. Springer Golden Ale will be Yellow Springs Brewery’s fourth beer to be canned and the brewery has no intention of slowing down, with future can and bottle releases on the horizon.

It’s time to welcome spring with open arms and get your ‘spring’er on with Yellow Springs Brewery. Peace, love and Springer!

10 ?’s with Chef Aaron Braun

March 7, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

Chef Aaron Braun’s culinary interest began in his Mother’s kitchen in Kettering, but was probably inherited from his Grandfather, who immigrated and opened a small restaurant in Dayton. Appreciation for good food and gatherings around the family dinner table inspired Aaron to seek employment in local restaurants at an early age, and later to obtain Culinary and Business Degrees from Hocking College in Nelsonville, Ohio.

He further broadened his cooking horizons on Put-in-Bay and then moved on to San Diego.  In California, Aaron promptly found employment at Silvergate Yacht Club, and then a 44-acre, private island resort; Paradise Point. It was at this luxury resort that he was able to really grow, eventually becoming the Chef of their fine dining establishment.  After getting married and traveling across the country, Aaron’s dedication to family and devotion to his hometown have brought him back to Dayton, where he has had the privilege of working for Wiley, as Meadowlark’s Sous Chef, for the past four years.

Aaron will be competing in the 2nd Annual Chef Showdown at the Dayton Home and Garden Show on Sat, March 18th in the first round at 11am.   This Chopped inspired competition features 9 local Chefs challenged to prepare an appetizer from a mystery basket of ingredients in 20 minutes.  One chef from each of the 3 preliminary rounds moves on to the finals Sunday at 1pm where they’ll create an entree in 30 minutes.  Winner gets $500 and bragging rights for the year!

Before the big competition we asked Aaron to take on our 10 question interview:

What is your favorite ingredient to cook with?

Eggs, they are so versatile and delicious, a key ingredient in some of my favorite things: fresh pasta dough, custards, cakes, breaded anything and of course on their own, in a breakfast burrito or a fried egg sandwich.

What ingredient do you dread?

Artichokes, I worked at a place that had a tuna dish that required two 20lb. cases of artichokes a week. By the time you get done peeling and trimming them there isn’t much yield and inevitably you end up with a thousand little cuts all over your hands.

What’s your favorite dish to make?
Hungarian greasy bread, so bear with me here, you take a good rye bread (I always use DLM) and slice it thick. Take jaw bacon and make deep cross cuts into the fat and skewer it. Chop up yellow onion, green pepper and the best tomato from the garden, and get some Hungarian paprika.  Now you’ll need a fire in the backyard, (on what will be the hottest day of the year). Take your bread put the peppers, onion and tomato on the the slice of rye bread (we usually build a few of them and set them on plates around the fire).  Next hold the skewered jaw bacon above the fire and wait. Once the fat starts slowly rendering, drip it on your sandwich, shake a fair amount of paprika on and enjoy. Best served surrounded by family telling stories.

Anything that requires building a fire in the backyard and inviting the whole family over is good with me.

What’s your favorite pig out food?
Italian Hoagie: crisp-on-the-outside soft-in-the-middle bread, best quality Italian cold cuts and provolone, shredded lettuce, thin sliced tomatoes and onion, topped with spicy cherry peppers, sprinkled with oregano and doused in vinegar and oil.

What restaurant, other than your own do you like to dine at in the Miami Valley?

Kabuki, we split a DoLsot Bimbob for an appetizer; rice, beef, veggies and a sunny side up egg. They serve it with a Korean spicy sauce that is amazing.  The dish is served in a hot stone bowl, as it sits the rice on the bottom becomes crispy- so good.  Then we have our favorite house sushi rolls- great food and service.

What’s your best advice for home chefs?

Mise en place, okay deep breath, it’s a French culinary term meaning everything “in its place”. So before you start cooking, measure out your ingredients, chop your vegetables and herbs, open your cans, get your pots and skillets out.  Once you have everything out and measured, it will make for less stressful cooking.

If you could invite any 4 guests to a dinner party who would they be and why?

Phil Lesh, Bob Weir and Jerry Garcia, I’ve been inspired for decades by their creativity, improvisation and the ability to consistently blow their audiences’ minds.  The last person would be my wife Candice, because if I was hanging out with the boys and cooking and didn’t invite her there would be many quiet mornings around the coffee pot.

Who do you look up to in the industry and why?

Wiley, the owner of Meadowlark, I have had the pleasure of working for Wiley for a few years now. She has inspired me with her generosity and love for food and people. The wealth of culinary experiences she brings to the table inspires me to continue to seek out my own and share them through cooking. I don’t know if I will ever be able to repay her for everything she has taught me. Thank You!

What do you do in the Miami Valley on a day off?

Starting the day off at the thrift store, we stop back at the house to pick up our dog Pancho and drive through Tudor’s Biscuit World (in Xenia). We head over to Scout Dog Park for a few hours of live entertainment. Then we go back to the house to garden for a bit and enjoy sunset around the pool and grill with friends and family.

Share a kitchen disaster, lucky break or other interesting story:

I had just moved to San Diego, I was working in a fine dining restaurant on a 44-acre island.   I had been roped into joining the Safety Committee for the resort; attending weekly meetings, inspections of other departments and this kind of fun stuff.  Anyway, we had just finished an Easter brunch, we had a few tables finishing up, the general manager had asked me to go out and talk to a table that was from Ohio (so being a proud Ohio guy I obliged). Within a matter of a minute or two the restaurant was shaking, chandelier swaying, glassware tinging, and panic noise coming from the kitchen.  My thought process was- What is happening?   Earthquake!  Being from Ohio, I had never been in an earthquake nor had the guest I was talking with. I remembered from a safety meeting the location to take everyone in case of an emergency, calmly got the guests up from the tables, started to lead them to the safety point and sent a bus boy back to get my kitchen staff. Before the ground had stopped shaking we had everyone out of the building and I had my (future) wife on the phone to make sure she was alright. She said that it must have been a big one, her Mom on the other line had felt it in Arizona!  That was my first earthquake, safety pays, no injuries reported.

Boston With Joan Jett & The Blackhearts Coming To The Rose

March 6, 2017 By Dayton Most Metro

Music legends BOSTON continue their Hyper Space Tour this summer with the iconic JOAN JETT & THE BLACKHEARTS, for an additional 21 cities including a stop in Huber Heights, Ohio at Rose Music Center on Saturday, July 8th.

Always a huge crowd pleaser with their high-energy stage show, other-worldly sound, and exceptional musicianship, BOSTON prides itself on performing a totally live show, delivering an extraordinary experience that is faithful to their studio recordings.

Unlike most bands at the time, all of BOSTON’s albums were conceived in a basement, written, produced and recorded by Tom Scholz, an MIT graduate who designed specialized equipment to capture the songs that he heard in his head. Scholz created his music with the intention of playing it live, in real time with real musicians, making it one of the few bands in history to reproduce seemingly-impossible-to-perform productions on stage, without the use of prerecorded music or technical enhancements.

The timeless songs appeal to young and old alike, so it’s not surprising to see concert audiences that span generations. Fans can expect to hear the classic songs they have grown to love, and will be treated to wild Hammond organ work, soaring guitars, and exceptional vocal harmonies, and be treated to BOSTON’s unique visual stage presentation, from mind-blowing lightning bolts and spectacular lights to an interstellar “journey” from the cockpit of the BOSTON spaceship, along with plenty of extra-terrestrial sounds heard nowhere else on earth.

It’s been over 40 years since BOSTON’s self-titled debut album first hit the airwaves and turned the world on to a new kind of sonic experience. With over 17 million copies sold, Boston generated hits such as “More Than a Feeling,” “Peace of Mind,” “Foreplay/Long Time,” and “Smokin’,” rock staples that are still in heavy rotation today. Their second album, Don’t Look Back was another chart-topper that confirmed their place in rock history, followed by Third Stage, which hit #1 on the charts, with the top single of 1986, “Amanda.” Walk On, Corporate America, and Life, Love & Hope complete the band’s discography. With over 31 million albums sold to date, BOSTON has stood the test of time.

Scholz says, “I am thrilled to have Joan and her band on tour with us this summer.  Not only is she an amazing rock and roll performing artist, but even more exciting to me is that she is a fellow vegetarian and shares compassion for animal welfare.”  Both Scholz and 30-year BOSTON veteran Gary Pihl have been longtime vegetarians.  Scholz has worked to promote that lifestyle as well as the prevention of cruelty and suffering to all living creatures.

Continuing their effort to promote humane treatment for animals, one dollar from each ticket purchased this summer will be donated to Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, who are committed to ending the slaughter of wildlife in the world’s oceans, as well as Mercy for Animals, who utilize a broad range of strategic approaches that seek to expose cruelty, prosecute abusers, and inspire consumers to make compassionate food choices.

Joan Jett is a true originator, an innovator, and a visionary. As the leader of the hard-rocking Blackhearts, with whom she has become a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, she’s had eight platinum and gold albums and nine Top 40 singles, including the classics “Bad Reputation,” “I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll,” “I Hate Myself For Loving You,” and “Crimson and Clover.” She sits at the head of her own independent label, Blackheart Records. Jett has acted in movies and television, including 1987’s Light Of Day, and in a Tony-nominated Broadway musical, The Rocky Horror Show. She has appeared on such acclaimed television shows as Oprah (the last season) and Law and Order. As a producer, she has overseen albums by Bikini Kill, Circus Lupus, as well as the Germs’ LA punk masterpiece, GI.

Since co-founding The Runaways, the pioneering all-girl punk quintet at age 15, Jett’s determination and drive have kept her in the public eye. Jett was able to see her story told in The Runaways, the film based on (lead singer of The Runaways) Cherie Currie’s book Neon Angel starring Kristen Stewart as Jett, and Dakota Fanning as Currie. Jett was close to the project: She served as an executive producer. Jett & the Blackhearts released their last studio album, Unvarnished in 2013 and continue touring the globe to throngs of adoring fans.

Tickets for the Huber Heights show, $102.00*, $84.00*, $72.00*, and $24.50* will go on sale to the public beginning 11:00am on Friday, March 10th at www.Ticketmaster.com, www.Rosemusiccenter.com, and the Rose Music Center box office.
