Country Star Vince Gill Returns To The Rose

March 6, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

Following a Sold Out show in 2016, country music icon Vince Gill will return to Rose Music Center in Huber Heights, Ohio on Tuesday, June 20th.

One of the most popular singers in modern country music, Vince Gill is famous for his top-notch songwriting, world-class guitar playing and warm, soaring tenor, all wrapped up in a quick and easy wit. Gill achieved his big breakthrough in 1990 with “When I Call Your Name,” which won both the Country Music Association’s Single and Song of the Year award as well as a Grammy. Since then, Gill has won 20 GRAMMY Awards and 17 more CMA honors, including Song of the Year four times – making him the most-awarded artist in that category in CMA history. The Academy of Country Music has conferred on Gill eight awards, including its prestigious Home Depot Humanitarian Award and the 2011 Career Achievement Award. Gill was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2007 and was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in August of 2012. Gill has produced albums for LeAnn Rimes, Amy Grant and Ashley Monroe and has made guest appearances on more than 500 albums including on those by Barbra Streisand, Eric Clapton, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, George Jones and others. Gill’s latest album Down To My Last Bad Habit is available now.

Pancakes With A Purpose at IHOP

March 5, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

On Tuesday, The International House of Pancakes will be celebrating its 12th annual National Pancake Day.  At the Beavercreak IHOP, located at 2460 N Fairfield Rd in Beavercreek from 6 am until 11 pm, you can get a  short stack (three buttermilk pancakes)  for just a $1 (normally $4.79) with all proceeds being donated to our local Children’s Hospital, a local manager shared with us by phone.

She also told us they expect huge crowds, last year the lines were out the door most of the day, with noon being the busiest time, with the rush slowing down between 2-4pm.

“Every pancake served on IHOP National Pancake Day has a purpose, and every penny raised goes a long way in making a meaningful, and lasting, impact on so many kids and families in our communities,” said Darren Rebelez, IHOP president.  Their goal is to raise  $3.5 million for children battling critical illnesses.

Can’t make it to IHOP this Tuesday?  You can make a donation on the restaurant’s website.

Upon learning that Toruk can help them save the Tree of Souls, they set out, together with their newfound friend Tsyal, on a quest high up in the Floating Mountains to find the mighty red and orange predator that rules the Pandoran sky. Prophecy is fulfilled when a pure soul rises among the clans to ride Toruk for the first time and save the Na’vi from a terrible fate.”

In an effort to bring audience members involvement to a whole new level, Cirque du Soleil will be launching a first-of-its-kind app for TORUK – The First Flight. The app will enhance the overall show experience and enable audience members to be a part of the action before, during and after the performance!

Surprises at Cheesesteak Qualifier, Finals to Follow

March 5, 2017 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Chef Hayden Shocks the Crowd, wins Qualifier !

Fat Tuesday got even fatter this past week at Submarine House in Centerville. The newly opened restaurant at 503 Miamisburg-Centerville Rd. was packed.   Fifteen competitors were ready to take on the Super Duper Cheesesteak Challenge and their friends and family were there cheering them on.  Standing room only was the atmosphere as Dayton’s favorite foodies, The Food Adventure Crew called the place to order.

Hungry Jax was the Emcee and official timekeeper was Kris Mick, past champion and cheesesteak eating legend.  We were here to see if any of these big mouths could qualify for the store’s top 10 times.

What happened next was simply epic…….

— LOCAL CHEF MATT “PORK CHOP”

The 16 inch Super Duper Cheesesteak

HAYDEN STUNS THE CROWD WITH  WINNING TIME of 4 minutes 41 seconds. Rumors swirled after the event that the chef and owner of Scratch Food had been training for weeks with an unorthodox diet of ruffage, cabbage and even cauliflower to stretch his stomach.  We cannot confirm this, but his time was amazing.  We did notice his foot stomping and bouncing method while eating.  That may have been a strategy to let the food settle, or it could have been excitement.  We will never know.

Kayla Bradstreet put her hair up, and put the men to shame !

We do know it was a legendary cheesesteak challenge moment and surprising highlight of the night.  When Chef Hayden raised his hands and yelled “done,” he then stuck out his tongue.  The crowd gave him a big pop of applause, hoots and hollers.

— DAYTON AREA SOCIALITE KAYLA BRADSTREET, REPRESENTING THE WOMEN, BEATS THE CHALLENGE and shows the men the some girl power !  Calling herself “man hands” she manhandled the sub sandwich into submission with a time of 14 minutes 20 seconds.  The crowd went bonkers as she tilted her head back and sprinkled the last bits of lettuce into her mouth.  She raised her hands and showed her empty mouth in triumph to the roar of women throughout the restaurant.  There were cell phone flashes and people recording videos everywhere.  It was

Chris Goode (left) finished in 5 minutes and Gary “The Growler” Leasure finished in 15 minutes.

Female Food Adventure for the ages.

— CHRIS GOODE, LAST MINUTE SUBSTITUTE FOR THE CHROME DIVAS, and the thinnest contestant, destroys his Super Duper Cheesesteak in 5 minutes flat for the 2nd best time. Lesson learned, don’t ever count the little guy out.  Especially if he has a mohawk!  Chris tore into that sandwich and rode off into the sunset on his Harley!  Thank you to the Chrome Diva’s for your support and your great representative !

The contestants grow restless – 15 people took the challenge

Bryan Suddith Seducing the Camera

—At the end of the night, the thermometer donation tally was at $686 plus approximately $180 more would be donated from $1,800 of food and drink sales in 2 hours.  Not too bad, about $886 bucks for the night.  We could have never done it without the participation of the contestants and the support of their friends and families.  Thank you to those who came out to watch, eat and drink and who also donated money on the side.  We could not have succeeded without the incredible ownership of Submarine House and their staff.  Their generosity and local support of causes is an example for all.  Thank you to Dayton Dining, Dayton Most Metro, Dayton Chrome Divas, and

The Pink Ribbon Girls for the promotion and support.

This was a one night only fun get together for charity, but it was fun to see who could qualify for the event.  The top 10 times go on to compete for the store championship in mid-April and each store’s champion will be named.  Then each champ moves on to the April 22nd, 1pm event, the finals at the Huber Heights new Submarine House Bar and Grill.  Come watch with us !

The big guy tore through the sandwich like child’s play, joking the whole way through.

An impressive display of chomping skills. A terrific time for the big sandwich.

Mr. Boro’s Tavern to Open Tuesday, March 14!

March 4, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

After being vacant for almost 2 years, the space  495 N. Main St. in Springboro will soon become the home of  Mr. Boro’s Tavern!  The space has quite a history, having originally been opened as Mulligan’s Wine & Stuff in 1998, then an ownership change and it was renamed Grapes of Ruth and run by Ruth Hagedorn, and then in November of 2007 it morphed into Bella Vino with another ownership change.  Serveral managment changes later it shut down in late spring of 2015.

Current Owners Rick Baarlaer and Marci Johannes have spent months redesigning the space, moving the bar to be the centerpiece of the building and turning it into a neighborhood sports tavern with a farmhouse rustic look that serves tavern style food…everything baked …nothing fried. Pizza’s, gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches, daily lunch specials and more. According to their facebook page they’ll be specializing in craft beers, bourbon, specialty drinks, and wine and will be open daily from 2:00 pm – 2:30 am.

They’ve set their grand opening for Tuesday March 14th and will party all through the St. Patrick’s day, even opening at 9am on Friday for their first ever St. Patrick’s Day bash.

We’re looking forward to checking out Mr. Boro’s and toasting to their success!

Oh my Goodness…and Grace!

March 3, 2017 By Nikki Nett

Sometimes, you stumble upon a Dayton Gem and can’t believe you never knew it was there. And sometimes, you trek through a way too cool old building to find a sunny little space full of awesome. Armed with a bottle of Pinot Grigio and some fancy schmancy plastic cups, I recently did just that.

Tucked away in the up and coming Davis-Linden building, you’ll find the just-barely-revealed-to-the-public Goodness and Grace Photography Studio. As my velvet heels made their way up the stairs to this new space, I couldn’t help but ooh and ahh over the industrial charm of the sprawling building. Once those fancy schmancy cups were full of the aforementioned Pinot, I sat down with my friend, Shana Lloyd, the Goodness & Grace owner for some girl talk and to hear about the big plans for the studio.

[Girl Talk omitted, because, duh]

Shana, this place is gorgeous. I’m guessing it was a blank canvas when you moved in, where did you find the vision to bring this to life?

Thanks! No disrespect to the Davis Linden Building, because I swoon daily walking into the warehouse but it was definitely blank and dusty. The first week of renovations was all about cleaning, sanding, spackling. I had a vision that didn’t necessary equate to warehouse chic. Don’t get me wrong, I am all about the industrial look and can’t wait to shoot in and around the building, but we wanted our place to be a little bit of magic in the center of it all.

The vision was pulled from various different sources of inspiration. Working with other portrait and commercial studios in the past, years in retail fashion marketing, I definitely knew what I loved and what I didn’t love, what I would do differently. I wanted to create a place that had all the comforts of home, with intricate details and energy I just wasn’t seeing elsewhere- energy that would inspire my clients, both portrait & commercial as well as myself. In short, I wanted to create a happy place. The new studio is really something special. We initially set out to create 3-4 separate shooting areas but then decided to create a workspace that could be used at every angle for our purposes and shooting purposes. We also have built in the flexibility to rearrange and create new areas at random if needed (and I am pretty random, so that is good.) Though the bulk of our business is outdoor photography, we can now provide our clients with an additional experience as well as a beautiful setting to meet with potential clients for consultations or product selection. The ideas don’t stop, so much so we’re already expanding and adding to our space. More on that later though!

So now it’s here, and it’s about to be to go-to creative space in the area, do you imagine that you’ll use it for more than photography?

You nailed it Nicole, it’s a space to create. Whether that is beautiful imagery or community, our new haven is really about building things that mean something. Portrait & Wedding photography is the bulk of our business and we are expanding into commercial, specifically fashion photography but we have also created a series of workshops that we are going to hold monthly that I’ve coined “Creative Wellness” – We’ve got a wide mix of topics and speakers planned with the goal of empowering visual artists, whatever their trade to live their dream and build a career that is gratifying and successful. Something I’ve always been passionate about is speaking, teaching, mentoring and now I have the opportunity to do that in an industry I truly love. Exciting times ahead!

Our first is coming up this March 23rd and we’ve partnered with Dayton legend Andrew White of IndigoLife Media and Samantha Elder of PR In Pumps. The topic is personal branding and the struggles creatives face in breaking through the noise. You can learn more on our Facebook page here.

I’ve seen you progress as a photographer over the past year. Now that you have this space, will you focus on specific kinds of photos?

Girl, I am all over the place. I am still learning every day and frankly, I have no clue. I want to explore everything and anything I can get my hands on but I realize I also have a growth strategy for my business that needs my focus. Wedding photography is definitely on my heart though, I am inspired daily by amazing artists all around me and find so much joy in photographing them so I have definitely been zoning in on that area and will continue. But we are full service photography studio and with my schedule, existing clients and destination jobs, expansion is on the horizon. Over the next few months our goal is to grow our team to 5 photographers with diverse styles and areas of expertise.

We recently did an inspiration wedding shoot that has peaked the interest of many vendors, publications and talent. I was initially just so excited with the idea, but when we set out to bring it to life and then saw it happen because of our amazing friendors, it was surreal. We’ve build some amazing partnerships in Dayton. Something Old Dayton, Sherwood Florist, Blush Boudoir, Cake Hope & Love and many others have really helped to build our little business. Dayton is just so awesome. Where was I going with this? Oh yeah, focus. A lot is coming in the next few months as I mentioned. We are always evolving, I think you have to stay ahead in this business. We’ve been approached recently for several things like styling, wedding planning even renting our studio and we keep an eye on these requests to see where opportunity lies for the future. We want to meet the needs of various clients and so we will be launching several new products, collections and styles of photography for our portrait & wedding clients while expand further into commercial with our fashion clients. At the core of all is, a love for lifestyle photography. Images that are real, emotion that is raw and energy that is contagious – all of these being the common thread in our work, whoever the client.

So how are you bringing your biz into the business world? I know your professional background and just can’t imagine you staying away for toooo long…

Commercial photography has been a passion before I even knew I could operate a camera. In my past life, I produced multiple product shoots and was always curious about what it would be like on the other side. From styling to photographing, it has always been definitely a big interest. Last year the spark was really ignited when doing some work for Belle of Dayton, I knew when I was posing those bottles of spirits so that the light hit them just perfectly, I was going to do more of this. As I mentioned earlier, we are expanding our space and part of that will be to serve our product only clients. We’re cooking up some big ideas. There’s a hint in there.

And, girl…I know your love of community and how you build in an ability to give back to causes you care about. Tell the world how that fits in here.

At the heart of everything I do, is love for Dayton. Community is everything. When I first started on this journey I knew that I wanted to some how intertwine my passion for giving back into our business model. In August of last year with our rebrand, we share our mission to donate 10% of our session fees to Dayton organizations serving the community. We are able to help many, with our biggest giving campaign in November where we fed 100 families on Thanksgiving, providing a monetary donation that covered a full meal including Turkey to those families through the The Hope Foundation of Greater Dayton. Like many things, we are looking at this program for opportunities to broaden it as well simplify for our partners. In the meantime, we’re looking for volunteer opportunities as well event sponsorship and in kind donations requests where Goodness & Grace would be a good fit. Agencies looking to partner with us can email [email protected]

What’s Next?

SO MUCH. With our opening this week and still many logistics to get through, we are excited about the next phase of this tiny but mighty business. The theme of this year, I can’t do it all. So the next few months are really going to be about growing the team, getting the word out, building our client portfolio, strengthening our brand and staying focused on community. We’ve hired consultants to help build strong product offering, expand our offerings, update our brand as well as develop a new website all with the intent of giving our clients the best experience.

Well, Shana thanks for chatting with me! All of us at DMM are so excited to watch Goodness + Grace grow!

Celebrate Bonded Bourbons At The Century Bar

March 3, 2017 By Dayton Most Metro

Join The Century Bar tonight to celebrate the 120th anniversary of the Bottled -in- Bond Act of 1897.

The primary purpose of the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897 is to guarantee that the product the consumer was buying was really whiskey, according to a standardized definition. The Act requires the spirit to be the product of one distillation season and one distiller at one distillery.

It must be bottled and stored in bonded warehouses under the U.S. government supervision for no less than 4 years. The purpose of this measure is to allow bottling of spirits under such circumstances and supervision as will give assurance to all purchasers of the purity of the article purchased. Treasury agents are assigned to control access to the bonded warehouses at the distilleries. The law prohibits addition or subtraction of any substance or material or the application of any method or process to alter or change in any way the original condition or character of the product, except the reduction to proof with water.

The law also requires that the packages that contain bottled in bond spirits be of definite content and that the alcoholic strength of the spirit must not be less than 50 percent by volume. The green stamp over the cork which is used gives the name of the distiller, the location of the distillery, the quantity of spirits in the bottle. The security which the consumer gets by this Act has caused a continually increased sale of spirits bottled in bond. The Bottled-in-Bond Act has made the United States government the guarantor of the whiskey’s authenticity.

The Century Bar is located at 10 S. Jefferson  in Dayton and The Bourbon Review named the bar to its list of “America’s Best Bourbon Bars” for several years in a row. CThe downtown bourbon spot was also named one of the “Best Whisky Bars in America” by Travel and Leisure in 2014

Old Scratch Pizza Serves Up Cones For a Cause

March 1, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

The Patterson Blvd. Pizza place that opened this past fall is not only serving up some of the best thin crust pizza in town, they’ve also created a program that is giving back to our area nonprofits.

Old Scratch Pizza make soft serve ice cream to serve to their guests.  They don’t charge for the cones, instead they ask for a small donation.  Each month Old Scratch Pizza collects and donate all monies to a chosen charity organization.

They kicked off the program in November of 2016 with  Secret Smiles, an organization that provides beds and bedding for children in the Miami Valley, then in December partnered with Clothes That Work, who provide workplace appropriate clothing, confidence building education and coaching services to job seekers. In January OSP chose Equitas Health, one of the nation’s largest HIV/lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) healthcare organizations.  Last month the featured charity was Girls On the Run, who inspires girls to take charge of their lives and define the future on their terms.

For March they’ve chosen another great organization as this month’s “Cones for a Cause” recipient. Owners Eric and Stephanie Soller shared they  “are really excited to be partnering with House of Bread, who deliver hot, nutritious meals to anyone in need 365 days a year. This kind of resource is so needed in our community. So come on down, have a cone, and make a difference.”

Bonus opportunity: Put Tuesday March 21st on your calendar for a “Restaurant Takeover” to support House of Bread. Volunteers from the group will be there pouring beers, and serving up ice cream cones, and 10% of the proceeds between 6-9 go to the organization!

If you know of an organization that would be interested in being a “Cones for a Cause” charity, please fill out the online form found at the bottom of their webpage.

Visit Old Scratch Pizza at 812 S. Patterson Road for lunch or dinner.  Pizzas are artfully prepared to order and cooked in a wood-burning oven until perfectly flame-kissed. Pair your pie with a specialty house cocktail or regional craft beer in our open-air, casual, and communal hall.  Also on the menu, some great salads, their Whole Roasted Cauliflower, sandwiches and yes, they have gluten free pizza crust available.  They are open Tuesday- Thursday from 11am – 10pm, Friday & Saturday’s they stay open an hour later until 11pm and Sunday from 11am – 9pm.
