The Pursuit of Happiness

August 23, 2017 By Dayton Most Metro

How happy are you right now? Are you struggling with the current events? Feeling fatigue from the constant barrage of bad news and the energy it takes to resist? Would you like to feel more positive (without giving up your awareness or fight)?

Your happiness is not a frivolous, expendable luxury. The Pursuit of Happiness is one of our inalienable rights and—along with its first cousin, Gratitude–is a powerful tool that can lead to improvements in your immune system, relationships, sleep, decision-making, creativity, and productivity…plus it’s FUN. The problem is, too few of us pursue it. You can make your own personal happiness a priority no matter what else is happening in the world–you don’t have to be in denial, but you also don’t have to deprive yourself. Pursuing happiness is part of self-care.

If you have just two hours on a Wednesday evening to commit to yourself, join novelist/teacher/speaker Katrina Kittle to talk about happiness, ways to get happiness, how much happiness affects every part of our lives, and most importantly: how we deserve it. Focus on self-care in tough times with Katrina Kittle’s  HAPPY CLASS.
August 30, 6:30-8:30 at the Springboro DLM.

This will NOT be one of those stressful “57 Habits of Very Furiously Happy People” that leaves you more stressed out and gives you more work to add to your already overloaded schedule. This fun, informal workshop combines story-telling, exercises, and plenty of brainstorming, interaction, and sharing to help you chase joy. Oh, and there will be chocolate (a thing that make Katrina very happy).

For questions or more information about Katrina, please go to: www.katrinakittle.com

Register online here, you’ll receive a confirmation email from Katrina within 24 hours. If you opt to pay by check, that email message will include a mailing address.

Where to watch the Superfight: Mayweather vs McGregor

August 23, 2017 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

McGregor vs Mayweather

Where you gonna be eatin, while someones takin a beatin?  There is a fight this weekend, that has captured the world’s imagination.  It is a perfect chance for a Food Adventure filled with apps, entrees and drinks.

Fight fans have been buzzing for months.  We have heard the insults and one liners at the press conferences.  We have seen the stare downs, threats and predictions.  Now let’s see the menu and let’s see what eateries going to be carrying this fight.

In case you have been living under a rock, let’s get you up to speed.  This Saturday, in one of the

A brew from Buffalo Wild Wings for the fight

more memorable fight weekends in memory, we have 2017’s SUPERFIGHT between an over the hill boxing legend and an MMA fighter in his prime.   This match is in a boxing ring, boxing rules.

Floyd “Money” Mayweather, the old champ, takes on the pride of Ireland, UFC star Connor McGregor.

HERE’S THE SKINNY on MAYWEATHER vs McGREGOR:

–WHEN: SATURDAY AUGUST 26th, on pay PER VIEW 7pm is non ppv undercard, followed by 3 Pay per view fights, then the main event.  The fight should go off sometime after 10:30pm Eastern time.

–Billed as “The Billion Dollar Fight” Mayweather will get paid $400 million for his 50th professional fight. McGregor, who will be making his pro boxing debut, will earn at least $75 million.

An Angus Burger at Eli’s restaurant at JD Legends

—Each fighter has to make weight at 154lbs,

–Mayweather is 40 years old, McGregor is 29.

–Mayweather is at least a 4-1 favorite to win the fight, which is being held in Las Vegas.

–The boxers are using 8oz gloves, which is almost unheard of at their weight class.  Usually the gloves are 10 ounces.  This means the boxers will feel the punches more, since there is less cushion on the hands.  It preaches to the dislike these participants have for each other.

Celebrate Blind Bob’s 9th Anniversary With 3 Days of Live Music

August 22, 2017 By Dayton Most Metro

The year was 2008, George W. Bush was the president, and a new music venue and tavern was born at 430 E. Fifth Street. Their creation story was written up on their early menus: “Bob wanted a bar. Nate wanted to run a business. Lisa wanted Bob and Nate out of her hair. Thus was sparked the idea of a family business. But what could they agree on? Good food and beer had always been a reliable source of numerous gatherings with family and friends. Coupling their strengths and experience, plus the availability of one of Dayton’s historic buildings and legendary music venues, gave birth to: BLIND BOB’S.”

Fast forward to the present, and Bob still has his namesake bar (and can often be found on the patio sweeping up remnants of last night’s party), Lisa takes care of bookkeeping in the quiet of her own office, and Nate is looking to the future of what the next 9 years holds, alongside his AGM Andy Rowe and several members of staff who have been with the business since day one.

General Manager and Owner Nate Mendenhall says that he and his crew put on shows all year long and meet lots of very talented musicians. They then use that information to “pack our anniversary weekend with as much great live music as possible. This year, we’re also going to get some of our favorite draft beers from our first year of operation, which we’ll be serving in special Blind Bob’s cups,” he said.

This year, Blind Bob’s 9 year anniversary runs from Friday, August 25-Sunday, August 27. Friday night bands are Cadaver Dogs, Yardboss, The Jasons, and Red Hot Rebellion! Saturday is Weathervein, The Flips, Pelafina, and Black Sire. They will be wrapping it up Sunday with Lia Menaker, Zack Sliver, Kyla Meainous, and Nolan Taylor.

There will be drink specials as well, and the kitchen will be open for normal hours, including weekend brunch on Saturday and Sunday (because everyone knows that eggs and Nicole’s bloody mary’s are just what is needed after a night of good music and good times).

For those interested in attending Blind Bob’s 9 Year Anniversary Celebration, all shows are $5, 21+, and start at 9pm. Brunch is served Saturdayand Sunday from 11am-3pm. More information can be found at: www.facebook.com/blindbobsbar

Angie’s Firehouse: This Grill is on Fi-ya!

August 22, 2017 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Reminders of the old Angi’s in the Tavern

Dayton firehouse nostalgia meets bar comfort food, all on the corner of Watervliet Drive, near the Smithville intersection.  Welcome to this week’s Food Adventure feature.

Located at the edge of a neighborhood, in an old 2-story home, Angie’s Firehouse is yet another Belmont sports bar and dinner option.  Parking is kind of unusual, being on the side street curb, or a small back parking lot.  As you enter the side entrance, you can usually find a handful of regulars on the patio sipping brews outside.  They greet all who enter, in between their conversation and laughs. The other entrance is the front door facing Watervliet, and is a far less dramatic entrance.

HUNGRY? THIRSTY?  You came to the right extinguisher.  Let your Food Adventure begin.

HERE’S THE SKINNY ON ANGIE’S FIREHOUSE:

Firefighter Decor

—The tavern is owned by a former local firefighter Captain named Pat Reed.   His daughter also helps run day-to-day operations.

—Before it was Angie’s Firehouse, it was a Greek family owned restaurant called “Angi’s.” Pat saved money on the sign by keeping the name the same when he bought it.  The old sign is now on display in the dining room.

—The inside of the restaurant consists of 2 areas, roughly cut in half. One side is the bar area, with dart boards and high tops that accompany an inviting watering hole. The atmosphere is casual, and firehouse knickknacks adorn the walls.  From fireman helmets to pictures of Dayton firefighters from 1910, there are antiques in every nook and cranny.

—Angie’s Firehouse Tavern is located at 702 Watervliet Ave, Dayton, OH 45420, with hours of 11am-2:30am everyday

The Haddock Dinner is wonderful, but only available Fridays

The menu is a wide variety of tavern fare and comfort food.  They have a few specialties that stick out, and after numerous visits to Angie’s Firehouse Tavern,  we have scoured the menu and come up with their “Must Eats.”

MUST EATS at ANGIE’s FIREHOUSE TAVERN:

—THE HADDOCK FISH DINNER:
Only offered on Fridays, this dinner is absolutely delicious. It is a great way to satisfy your craving for a fish fry. The thick haddock is hand breaded and deep-fried to a golden brown. There is also a Grouper fish dinner available Fridays, but we think the Haddock dinner is heads and shoulders above the rest. Try the Haddock, seriously… with mashed potatoes and gravy.

—HOMEMADE CABBAGE ROLLS:

The Homemade Cabbage Rolls are legendary at Angie’s Firehouse Tavern

Family recipe, and they are the hit of the menu at Angie’s. Served piping hot from the oven with options of mashed potatoes, this plate is a taste of home goodness. It’s like being at Grandma’s house.  This is the dish that brings people in from all over town.

—GRANDPA REED’S CHIP DIP and MIKESELL’S GROOVY CHIPS:
Grandpa Reed’s old secret family recipe, passed down from evenings at home with the family. This classic french onion and dill type dip goes perfect with you hometown Mikesells chips. Addicting and sharable we bet you order a

Grandpa Reeds Chip dip – try the family tradition with Mikesells

2nd basket, because they go fast in a group.

—“SPICY BBQ” FLAVORED CHICKEN WINGS:
Ok, so this item was HOT. We mean spicy. But we couldn’t stop eating the wings. Tossed in a Sweet BBQ sauce, the wings are then rolled in hot crushed red pepper. We were sweating, and using up napkins like crazy. Definitely the hottest BBQ wings we have ever eaten, and some of the most delicious. NOT for the faint of heart.

The Bad Lieutenant Cheeseburger

—“THE BAD LIEUTENANT” CHEESEBURGER:
A half pound, hand smashed burger with cheese and onion straws on top. Of course all the other toppings such as ketchup, mustard, mayo, onion, pickle, lettuce and tomato are available. We loaded it all up. Good, messy and worth every bite.

—BELMONT CATERING POTATO SALAD as a side item:

Belmont Catering Potato Salad is a side at Angie’s

We do not know of too many places in Dayton that have the worlds greatest potato salad on their menu, from Belmont Catering.  Angie’s does! Take full advantage of this side item and taste the shredded potato salad that people buy across the street to the tune of over 1000lbs per week. Served cold, it will put you in a dream world. Whatever the meal, get this as one of your side options.

—DEEP FRIED PICKLE CHIPS:
Sliced thin, breaded and deep-fried to perfection, these have that sour and slaty taste you crave. Get some ranch for dipping and you are off to a great Food Adventure at Angie’s Firehouse Tavern.  Again, another addicting appetizer. You will not be able to keep your hands out of the basket and will slap yourself.

Deep Fried Pickle Chips

*Keep in mind they have a full service bar, and many drink specials are in play.  Your server can let you know what deals are running, so you can wet your whistle.

So there you have it – next time you pull the alarm on your hunger, head to Angie’s Firehouse Tavern to hose yourself down with good eats.  Family owned, and already deep in tradition, it is a unique spot, with some good things to offer.  We pointed you in the right direction on menu selection, the rest is up to you.

Experience Dayton’s First Ever Porch Fest!

August 22, 2017 By LIbby Ballengee

When the Collaborator himself, Peter Bekendorf, first approached me about putting on Dayton Porchfest, I thought he was crazy. Cleveland does it, he explained, involving 30 some porches all simultaneously playing free music throughout neighborhoods. That sounded like a tremendous amount of effort and energy. “Peter, I love the idea, but you’re crazy,” I’d say to him. He grinned with a gleam in his eye. “We’re going to do this,” he replied determinedly.

That was a year or so ago, and more recently, while perusing the interwebs, I stumbled across an article about International Play on a Porch Day on August 26th. I had no idea there was an international day dedicated to playing on porches! The IPPD website explained “Music goes beyond words. It can transcend the most difficult barriers. It ties us together like a thread through our hearts. Our skin is many colors but music is in our blood, our bones and our soul.” Given the current climate in our country and even community, it sounded like just the remedy we needed. I forwarded the info on to Peter, who immediately ran with it.

That is how Dayton’s first Porchfest was born. In just a couple short weeks, home owners in St Anne’s Hill, came together to support this idea in the most amazing way! What seemed like overnight the porches were lined up, as were the musicians, and schedules were being made. An after party at Fifth Street Brew Pub was also arranged. Kudos to Peter, the musicians, homeowners, and the entire team of ad hoc group of volunteers who are making these free concerts happen!

Come on out and enjoy the show Saturday August 26th, which is the official “Play on a Porch” day. Meet the St Anne’s neighborhood and support local music at the first of what will be an annual festival celebrating the quality and diversity of the Dayton music scene. All ages welcome! No cost! Bring a chair or blanket, and the whole family, for some summer fun!

How to go?

When: Saturday August 26, 2017 from 3:30pm – 10pm

Where: St Anne’s neighborhood. Starts at 4th and Henry Streets.

Cost: Free!

Ages: All!

Schedule:
Kickoff 3:30 – 3:45 TRSS Drum Corps at Fourth and Henry
Music Block 1 4:00 – 4:45 Craig Jackson Jazz Band, Charlie Campbell and Steve Makofka Accordion Duo, Nick Kizirnis and Firecreek.
Music Block 2 5:00 – 5:45 Harmonica Neil, Aaron Maheu, Spill The Wine, Sonny B. Gould and Blue-Eyed Grass.
Music Block 3 6:00 – 6:45 Berachah Valley, Skyp Krantz, John Dubuc, Andy Rush, Jack Ballengee Morris and Tim Spoores.
AfterFest 7:00 – 9:30 Nothing But Treble at Fifth Street Brewpub

Get your groove on at Hog Jam!

August 21, 2017 By LIbby Ballengee

Summer is quickly winding down, kids going back to school, and September nearly upon us. Where has the time gone? Luckily for us in Dayton, there is an end of summer festival that serves as a fantastic last hurrah: the annual Hog Jam music festival, running strong in it’s 12th year!

As the event has evolved over the years, the location has bounced around a few very special sites. This year’s event is back “home” – located just south of Dayton, in Franklin Ohio’s VFW campgrounds, right off 75. It’s a sprawling property with a covered stage, plenty of shade, and easy access to many amenities.

It’s no surprise Hog Jam is such a popular event for area music fans: it showcases the region’s best singer / songwriters, as well as amazing bands on the local, regional, and even national stage. Awesome bands including the up-and-coming sensation Dawg Yawp, Johnny Neel (formerly of Allman Brothers fame), local faves Subterranean, Electric Orange Peel, Great Northern String Band, Jah Soul, my fave for many reasons, Jack Ballengee Morris, among many others! The music runs late into the night, so camping is encouraged, and including in the ticket price.

Hog Jam started as a backyard picnic with a hog roast, so it serves as the namesake and the festival’s longest traditions. Organizers invite you to break bread, have some drinks, and decide who gets to take the pig ear home to the dog! Additional food vendors will be on site to ensure no one goes hungry. Speaking of hunger, this year’s proceeds benefit The Foodbank!

No weekend babysitter? No worries! The entire family is welcome to this family friendly event, which includes bounce houses, arts & crafts, and a playground for the kids. So no excuses staying home this time! Get your summah on while you’ve got the chance! This is definitely one of the “don’t miss” local music events of the season!

How to Go?

When: August 25th-27th, 2017

Where: 8718 Claude-Thomas Rd, Franklin, OH 45005

How much: $50 GA Admission. $100 RV. Additional $25 to camp by car or to get in early. Click here to purchase.

Visit www.hogjammusicfestival.com for even more information about attending.

Get The Led out – Throwback Thursday Concert

August 20, 2017 By Dayton Most Metro

Returning once again by popular demand from their performance in 2016, Get The Led Out has captured the essence of the recorded music of Led Zeppelin and brought it to the big concert stage. The Philadelphia-based group consists of six accomplished musicians intent on delivering Led Zeppelin’s studio recordings with all the bells and whistles. From the bombastic and epic, to the folky and mystical, utilizing the multi-instrumentalists at their disposal, Get The Led Out re-create the songs in all their depth and glory with the studio overdubs that Zeppelin themselves never performed live.

Luminaries of Dayton: Noah Tyler Bish

August 20, 2017 By Angie Hoschouer

Mr. Bish was born near Carroll County, Maryland and hails from one of the old families of that state, founded in America by his great grand-father. Noah decided after his early school years to move to the Montgomery County area where he was employed on a farm for three seasons. He married Sarah C. Clemmer on November 11, 1869 and had three children: George William, Susan Adie and Ray Clemmer.

A year following his marriage, Mr. Bish purchased forty acres of land in Perry Township, there carrying on general farming from 1870 until 1884. He then went to Dayton and invested in a stock of groceries, opening a store. From the beginning he prospered in his commercial pursuits and developed a successful store with a large patronage. Admitting his son to a partnership, the business was continued under the name N.T. Bish & Son.

Noah T. Bish died on October 5, 1922 at the age of 79. He is located in Section 101 Lot 2533.

FREE Movie Tickets For Students at THE NEON

August 18, 2017 By Jonathan McNeal

THE NEON, Downtown Dayton’s Independent Cinema, will be giving away 200 free tickets to high school and college students who wish to see AN INCONVENIENT SEQUEL: TRUTH TO POWER.

A follow-up to Al Gore’s Oscar® Winning documentary AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH, this film follows Gore as he continues his tireless fight to train an army of activists and influence international climate policy. Cameras follow him behind the scenes — in moments both private and public, funny and poignant — as he pursues the inspirational idea that while the stakes have never been higher, the perils of climate change can be overcome with human ingenuity and passion.

Free tickets are being funded by the The Adler – Zsambok Foundation – an organization that strongly believes that young people must be made aware of current climate issues. The film is playing now through Thursday, August 24. Showtimes can be found at www.neonmovies.com, and tickets will be given on a first-come, first-serve basis to all high school and college students with valid student IDs.

THE NEON is located at 130 E. Fifth Street in downtown Dayton.

Groundbreaking For New Montgomery County Fairgrounds

August 18, 2017 By Dayton Most Metro

The Montgomery County Agricultural Society Board of Directors is pleased to announce the groundbreaking for the Montgomery County Fairgrounds & Event Center, Saturday, August 19, 2pm at Arthur O. Fisher Park in Jefferson Township. Located at 5661 Dayton-Liberty Road.

“It’s a new and exciting beginning.” said John Yancik, President of the Agricultural Society Board. “After wrapping up our 165th year at the original fairgrounds on South Main Street this past July, we look forward to the future with this wonderful new, year-round facility.”

The original fairgrounds property was purchased in a joint venture with Premier Health and the University of Dayton.

The new event center and fairgrounds will include several climate controlled buildings, and the repurposing of existing structures on the Arthur O. Fisher Park property that encompasses over 150 acres.

The park proudly bears the name of Judge Arthur O’Neill Fisher whose credentials include prosecutor, Tuskegee Airman and trailblazer.

“Our new facilities will not only host the Montgomery County Fair, but will also be available for weddings, receptions, meetings, events, get-togethers, retreats, offer camping and other amenities year- round.” Yancik added.

The next Montgomery County Fair will take place July 9-14, 2018 at the new location.

Japanese Food and Italian Wine Dinner

August 18, 2017 By Dayton Most Metro

Photo byJon Sweatt

Beavercreek’s Osaka Japanese Steakhouse will be hosting a wine dinner on Thursday, August 24th at 6pm. According to Vintner Select wine representative Michael Freeman, this dinner will showcase the textural and savory elements of Japanese cuisine with complimentary profiles of wine. The wines featured will be from the Malvirà estate.

This tiny property, located in the northern Italian region of Piedmont, is situated just across the Tànaro river from the more famous Barolo & Barbaresco zones in a less familiar locale called Roero.

The Malvirà estate serves as a family owned/operated Agriturismo, a working farm with a 13 room bed & breakfast that rests in the heart of their organically-farmed vineyard.  For more information, check out their website www.malvira.com

The wines for our evening will provide a range of different styles & vintages, going as far back as a special cellar-release 2006, directly from the winery.

Here’s the menu:

Shrimp Tempura | lightly battered for a crisp crust

Sparkling Arneis ‘Rive Gauche’Spumante

Beef Negimaki | a traditional Japanese dish of thinly pounded beef wrapped round scallions with savory sauce

Barbera d’Alba ‘San Michele’ 2013

Hamachi Sushi | mild flavored Yellowtail tuna prepared as a gentle introduction to the world of sushi

Favorita Langhe Bianco, 2015

Katsu Fish | panko-crusted and pan fried white fish

Roero Arneis Vigna Trinità, 2014

Hibachi Filet of Beef | tender filet mignon prepared by the Hibachi chef

Langhe Rosso ‘San Guglielmo’ 2006

Call the restaurant at 937-320-1188 to make the required reservations to enjoy this wine dinner, which runs $65 per person.

Osaka Japanese Steakhouse is located in an out lot at the Fairfield Commons at 2476 Commons Blvd.
