Human Race kicks off 17-18 Season with Legendale

The Human Race Theatre Company kicks off it’s 2017-2018 Season with a fun performance for the next generation of theatre fans! LEGENDALE, an exciting new pop-musical where reality and the digital world collide, opens September 7 and runs through October 1, 2017. 
The story is based on Andy, whose favorite way to escape his miserable job and humdrum life is the online game “Legendale.” He dreams of victory in its new tournament and winning the grand prize to become “the Lord of Legendale,” but is stuck competing as a lowly milkmaid. When things in the online world suddenly take a strange turn, Andy and his avatar must both discover their inner warrior. A blend of romance, adventure and virtual reality with a pop-infused score, it’s an inspiring tale like no other that’s sure to delight!
 
Human Race is offering fun ways to celebrate this first performance, and American Premiere of LEGENDALE! They have two very special upcoming nights that are extra special:
  • HRTC is hosting their very first COSPLAY CONTEST NIGHT  on September 11 with more than $1800 worth of prizes (full list of prizes and rules are posted on the FB event page). Comedian Jessica Graue is MCing the event. $10 for participants, $5 for general audience. Kids can compete too! Registration starts at 6:15pm, pre-judging at 7pm, and parade of costumes at 8pm. All participants ages 13 and up will receive a ticket voucher good for and show on our 2017-2018 Loft season.
  • Young Professionals Night is Saturday, September 16. The pre-show party begins at 5pm in the HRTC rehearsal hall on the second floor below the theatre. Ten questions with Branch & Bone Artisan Ales

When Branch & Bone Artisan Ales opens in historic South Park (905 Wayne Avenue) in the first quarter of next year, it will add to the long list of existing breweries in the Miami Valley and will become the sixth brewery within walking distance of downtown, securing the Gem City’s reputation as a beer tourism destination. Kept mostly under wraps until now, the brewery, started by Brett Smith, John Joyce, and Kevin Kriegel, is already underway with renovations and has started assembling their brewing equipment. In this Dayton MostMetro exclusive, we ask the ten questions readers want answered.

 

What is behind the name?

Music and other expressive arts have a large influence on us. The name draws inspiration from the Simon Joyner song “Nostalgia Blues” on his album Grass, Branch & Bone. A lot of what we aim to do ties into music and art as brewing beer is our form of expression.

The crux of what we are can be found within the name. Branch & Bone Artisan Ales represents the connection of earth and human through fermentation. The art of brewing relies on the products of the earth. Yeast combines these ingredients to create beer. Our labor simply guides the yeast to do its thing. By selecting the right ingredients: malt, hops, water, and yeast, our influence on the finished product can be seen. In addition to those basic elements of beer, people can expect to see a lot of other earthly components in our beers including fruit, teas, coffee, foraged plants from our local forests, and wild yeast and bacteria from our area.

 

One aspect where we differ from most breweries is that our brew system is extremely manual. So, to bring it all together, we see Branch & Bone as a symbiosis of the ingredients of earth turned into a fermented beverage aided by our hard work.

 

Who designed your logo? How did you settle on the concept for it?

Our icon logo was designed by Joshua Minnich of Columbus, Ohio and our text-focused logo was designed by our good friend Greg Tobias here in Dayton. Artwork is integral to our brewery and it was important for us to work with local artists that we knew could create something that fit us. We went through various themes, many that we liked, but eventually landed on what you see. We feel that it captures what we want to portray our brand.

Your location asks visitors to extend the downtown entertainment district by connecting the Oregon with South Park. What was behind the decision to locate where you did?

We love the South Park Historic District. It’s a really interesting, eclectic neighborhood that we see a lot of potential in. We hope that the residents really enjoy having us as neighbors. In searching for a location, we wanted to be close to downtown. Developments in the area are driving people downtown and we want to be a part of that. The businesses along Wayne Avenue extending from the Oregon District seem to be driving traffic as you suggest. We looked at a few locations in that corridor, but the building we ended up in was just perfect for us. It has enough space for us to grow and gives us a lot of room to store oak barrels, which we intend to have many of.

There are a lot of breweries in Dayton now. What will be different about Branch & Bone? What will you offer that the area doesn’t already have?

People can expect a lot of what they love in other breweries at Branch & Bone, but we will have a focus on mixed fermentation saisons and wild ales, with a lot of beer aging in oak barrels. We will be making beers that we love to drink, so you can expect hoppy beers, saisons, wild ales, berliner/gose (often with fruit and other interesting ingredients) stouts/porters, barleywine (and other English style pub ales), beers infused with coffee, historical beers, lagers, and some very creative and off the wall beers that we dream up.

Walk me through your vision of the taproom—what can visitors expect to see?

Visitors will be greeted by a simple and clean space. They can expect a modern look with a rustic feel. Creating a customer experience, influenced by that of our favorite breweries, in the taproom beyond just beer will be a major focus. We want to create a very comfortable, fun taproom where people hang out with friends and family while feeling like our friends and family when enjoying our beers. Everyone can expect some fun events and we will always have good music playing!

Tell me about your beer styles. What do you envision your line-up to look like?

Our lineup will feature 8 beers on draft and will typically consist of a couple of hoppy beers, a porter or stout, a couple of berliner/gose style beers infused with interesting ingredients, a couple mixed fermentation beers, and we want to regularly feature a beer with coffee on tap.

As our oak aged mixed fermentation beers mature, people can expect to see more of those available on tap.

 

Do you intend to have several flagship styles? How about one-off variants?

We will have certain styles that are usually represented, but no real flagship beers. Some beers will make an appearance more often than others as ingredients/seasonality and popularity dictate, but variety and exploration drives our passion to create.

 

For the geeks out there, it’s time to get technical. Let’s talk specs—brewhouse size, fermentation tanks, expected annual output?

Our brewhouse is a 7-barrel brewhouse, very manual, created from modified dairy tanks. We will start with four 7-barrel fermenters and a 15-barrel fermenter. We will have a few tanks dedicated to infusing fruit into beer, and a decent amount of oak, including a foudre, to start. The barrel program will always be growing and will be a major focus for us.

Annual output will likely start out around 7-800 barrels and max out around 1500-2000 barrels/year.

 

What is your distribution plan? Will your beers be available outside of the taproom? Keg only or will you do bottle/can distribution?

To begin, our beer will only be available in our taproom but when we can, we will self-distribute kegs to establishments in the area known for their exceptional beer service. We look forward to having our beer involved in community events as much as production allows as well.

Bottles and cans will be available as limited release products through the taproom as production dictates. No timetable has been set for these releases.

 

How soon do you plan to sell to AB InBev?

When Limp Bizkit actually plays a show at the Sunoco across the street…

 

But on a more serious note, we are an independently owned and operated brewery. We aren’t beholden to anyone other than ourselves and that means there will never be an influence to sacrifice product and quality for profits. We are passionate about this industry and we believe ownership matters. “Craft beer” has experienced many changes as it has matured, even just over the past couple years. During that time, many acquisitions of small craft breweries by large conglomerates in the larger beer industry have occurred. This has caused a blurring of what we used to all know as craft beer. We take the same stand as many of the well-established independent breweries that inspire us. That stand is that brands owned by these mega corporations that employ shady business tactics serve to blur product distinction within the industry, limit access to raw ingredients, and stifle fair competition among market access for the small independent brewery. To sell your brand to a company actively acting against the interest of independent breweries while asking the consumer to continue their support for the brand under the illusion of that independence is disingenuous. We take pride in being an independently-owned brewery and will work to prove the value in that to our customers through creative exploration, commitment to quality and customer service, and active involvement in our local community.

DAYTON LGBT FILM FEST Heading Into 12th Year!

What do Bette Midler, Danny Glover, Danny DeVito, Laura Linney, Ian McKellen and Laverne Cox all have in common? They all have films playing at The Dayton LGBT Film Festival this year!

Titles are locked down, marketing materials are ready to go, and visiting artists are securing their travel plans for The 12th Annual Dayton LGBT Film Fest – taking place next month at THE NEON in Downtown Dayton.

During the weekend of Oct. 13-15, the festival will screen 17 films (a combination of shorts and features) with ties to the LGBT community – ranging from American comedies to International dramas…from narratives to documentaries. Directors, stars and other creative individuals from a handful of the selections are slated to attend.

One special guest will be Jill Alexander, an accomplished actress and co-star of SENSITIVITY TRAINING (pictured above on the left). The committee selected the film from over 100 submissions this year and was unaware (until after booking the film) that Alexander grew up right here in the Miami Valley and attended Beavercreek High School. The festival is thrilled to bring Alexander back home to share her work with the community and her family.

On Friday, October 13, attendees of the Opening Night Film FREAK SHOW will be invited to the Opening Night Party at The Mudlick Tavern – just a few blocks from THE NEON. For $8, guests will see the movie and then enjoy a complimentary cocktail and appetizers – this is certain to be a very hot ticket.

Though festival passes sold out in record time this year, patrons will have a chance to get single tickets for each of the screenings beginning Friday, September 8. Details about the films and how to get tickets can be found on the official site – www.daytonlgbt.com

NEON Manager Preparing For Toronto International Film Festival

Hello Everyone,

My bags are mostly packed, a third draft of my “Must See” list has been deciphered from my scribbled notes, and I can hardly contain my excitement as I prepare to embark on my 13th Toronto International Film Festival.

Over the past several years of attending TIFF, I’ve seen almost everything I set out to see.  I had a rhythm (which involved very little sleep), and I knew how early I needed to wake every morning in order to be one of the first dozen people in line (which helped to secure the really hot tickets).  But this year, they’ve mixed it up.  Instead of waiting in queue every day, I’ll have two small windows of opportunity to get on-line and request the tickets I desire for the entire festival…thus luck will have more to do with it than gumption.  My fingers are crossed.

I’ll be keeping a daily log of all the films I see (and stars I encounter).  Though I wish I could do all the festivals – like Berlin and Cannes and Sundance and NYFF and  Telluride – I’m actually quite happy that TIFF is the one that fits so well with my schedule.  I’ve loved going to the festival over the years, and I love being able to report my findings to all of you.

Mystery Monday For Sept 4th

Many of you knew about Gus as one of the 2 robots, who’ve  perched on the roof of Gaines Mechanical on Hall Avenue, waving as cars that drive-by,  just off I-75 since 2008.
Prior to that he waved from the window of their old location on Salem Avenue after being created in the late 80’s out of scrap ductwork that was found around the business owned by Tommy Gaines. Now owned by Tommy’s son Bruce, he’s commented that they’ll keep Gus around as a mascot s long as they can.

Calling All Hungry Lords and Ladies!

Be sure to come early before the gates open to catch the opening ceremony!

Hear ye! Hear Ye! This weekend kicks off the Ohio Renaissance Festival! Located just a short drive from Dayton in Harveysburg, OH, lies a 30-acre recreation of an English Village that takes you back in time to the 16th Century. No time machine is necessary to experience a day full of stage shows, actors, vendors, food and even the Queen herself! It’s a great day to share with the family and friends!

This weekend (Labor Day weekend) is the opening weekend for the Festival. It runs every weekend form now until October 29th on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:30am-6pm rain or shine! Tickets can be bought online or at the gates and range from $22.50 for adults and $12.50 for kids (kids under 5 are free!). Opening weekend is a steal as Adults are BOGO and kids under 12 are free! Each weekend has a different theme such as Time Traveler’s Weekend, Pirates Weekend, and even Trick or Treating the last weekend that it is open! Be sure to bring $3 for parking! 

Jax from Food Adventures, wanted in on this festive event! So she gathered up her fam and drove back in time (via mini van) for a day full of food and fun! Hear are some of her favorite eats, must-sees and tips from the day!

The upon entering the grounds, you’ll be taken back by the incredible aromas that fill the air! From traditional festival foods, to fun period inspired dishes, there’s something for everyone’s appetite! And of course, there is lots of ale and wine to cleanse the pallet and toast to the Queen!

Turkey Leg

Smoked Turkey Leg is a must eat!

This giant smoked drumstick is one of the iconic and most sought after eats at the festival. And it’s no surprise as to why! You’re handed the leg with the bone wrapped in foil to make it portable and easy to chomp into while you walk around the fair. Juicy and tender, this one is a must have!

Bread Bowls

Fresh baked bread bowls are served up overflowing with your choice of mac and cheese, beef stew, chili, potato soup or broccoli and cheese soup! These make a great dish to enjoy as the weekends get cooler! And are big enough to share!

Warm up with a hot bread bowl full of savory beef stew!

Roasted Corn

Who doesn’t love a smokey roasted ear of corn dunked into butter! This is also another fun food that you can eat and walk around with at the same time!

This festival is a perfect Food Adventure.

There is also a place on site that is a sit down restaurant dedicated to “Medieval Style BBQ.”  We had to stop in and visit this spot…

Famous for their award winning sauces and rubs, 1572 offers big servings and even bigger flavors! One of our favorite meals is the smoked jalapeno Texas style sausage! And don’t forget a side of the 1572 Tater Casserole! This is one of the places that the Food Adventures Crew will be back to for sure!

There are so many edible treats to indulge in! The Kings Nuts (roasted candied nuts), The Jerkey Kart (beef jerky), and The Pickle Kart (huge dill pickles), are all fun and easy options to snack on while perusing the fair! A full list of food vendors can be found here.

While the food at this Festival is outstanding, it’s just one of many fun adventures that you and your family will encounter at the Festival! There are shows and performances all day performed on 14 different stages! One of our favorites for adults is the Mudde Show. Be sure to sit back a few rows unless you’re ok with getting  splattered with chunks of mud!

And of course, you can’t miss out on the Full Armored Joust! Watch Knights on their mighty steeds charge towards one another in a thrilling battle of the bravest! This is a family must see!

Got the little ones with you? Don’t miss out on their chance to be “Knighted” by the Queen during one of the Knighting Ceremonies! And be sure to stop and talk to the the actors along the way! The Fairies, a Mermaid and the Pirate all had special treasure to give to the kids!

Fairies will give your little ones special treasure sprinkled in Fairy Dust!

You’ll also find a variety of period themed games and rides for the kids to try! Be sure to have some cash on hand for these.

Be sure to dress for the weather as the festival will go on rain or shine. The grounds can get muddy, so it would be a good idea to toss on a tall pair of pirate boots to keep your feet dry! Many visitors to the Festival even come in their own costumes! So go ahead and toss on a pair of fairy wings or dress up as royalty and come on out to a deliciously fun event!

Dayton Art Institute Names Chief Curator

The Dayton Art Institute has announced the appointment of Jerry N. Smith, Ph.D., as the museum’s Chief Curator, effective September 26.

“After an extensive national search, we are excited to welcome Dr. Jerry Smith to the museum and the Dayton community,” said The Dayton Art Institute’s Director & CEO Michael R. Roediger. “Dr. Smith possesses an extensive curatorial, scholarly and administrative background–skills that will be immediately utilized as the museum prepares for its centennial in 2019.”

 

In his role as Chief Curator, Smith will provide leadership to the museum’s curatorial department, guiding the vision of future collection installations and special exhibitions. A key part of that will be the reinstallation and reinterpretation of the museum’s permanent collection galleries, planned as part of The DAI’s centennial celebrations. The Dayton Art Institute’s permanent collection numbers more than 26,000 objects, with as many as 1,000 on view at any time.

 

“I’m excited to join the Dayton community and am looking forward to working with The Dayton Art Institute’s team,” Smith said. “With a world-class collection and storied history, The DAI has a tremendous amount to celebrate with its coming centennial. I’m honored to be part of that celebration.”

 

Smith most recently served as the Hazel and William Hough Chief Curator and Interim Director at the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, Florida. Prior, he held leadership positions at the Phoenix Art Museum for more than a decade, where he began as associate curator in 2005, was appointed to Curator of American and Western American Art in 2009, and later to Curator of American and European Art to 1950 and Art of the American West in 2014.

 

In these positions he introduced numerous works into the museums’ collections and oversaw more than 40 exhibitions that spanned the art of the Renaissance to American modernism and contemporary art of the American West. The diverse exhibitions he has curated or co-curated include Georgia O’Keeffe: Ingénue to Icon, Riding Tall: The Cowboy in Art, Leonardo da Vinci’s Codex Leicester and The Power of Observation and Andy Warhol: Portraits.

 

He was a contributing organizer and catalogue essayist for In Contemporary Rhythm: The Art of Ernest L. Blumenschein and Cézanne and American Modernism. Smith authored Howard Post: Western Perspectives, and was co-author of Don Coen: The Migrant Series. He recently collaborated on a chapter for Visitor-Centered Exhibitions and Edu-Curation in Art Museums (2017).

 

Smith holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in art history from Arizona State University and received his Ph.D. in the history of art from the University of Kansas. Active in The Association of Art Museum Curators, he serves in career support groups, as liaison between mentors and mentees, and currently sits on the governance and nominating committee.

Dayton Ballet & DCDC Volunteers Duel Behind the Bar!

Dayton is renowned for it’s incredible legacy in the history of American dance. In 1927, The Schwarz School of Dance (now Dayton Ballet School) was opened in Dayton, by the gifted Schwarz sisters, who returned home after performing professionally around the world. Ten years later, the sisters created “The Experimental Group for Young Dancers,” and staged a performance at the Dayton Art Institute. This was the first performance of what is now the Dayton Ballet, the second oldest regional ballet company in the US.

The Schwarz sisters instructed another pioneer of dance, Jeraldyne Blunden. In 1968, Jeraldyen went on to create her own school, Jeraldyne’s School of Dance. A few years later, she established the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, the first modern dance company in Ohio. The company regularly performs in Dayton, and around the world, including an upcoming trip to Russia and Kazakhstan next May as part of Dance Motion USA, a cultural diplomacy program organized by the U.S. Department of State and the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

These incredible achievements and milestones are being celebrated with style over the next year or two. The Dayton Ballet celebrates it’s 80th Season, and next year DCDC hits their 50th Birthday! Volunteers from the Dayton Ballet Barre and DCDC Ambassadors are joining forces Tuesday, September 5th, 2017 at Brixx Ice Company to kickoff these spectacular seasons! They’ll be slinging drinks as dueling bartenders, and might even have a dance off or two!

Enjoy commradere, drink specials, and a fun way to support these historic arts organizations. Best of all – there will be random ticket giveaways for the exciting up-coming seasons! Opening BOGO Weekend at Renaissance Festival

For many it’s a Labor Day weekend tradition, the jour journey to Harveysburg in Warren County to experience the old, new, and unique that bring the Ohio Renaissance Festival to life. Kicking off the season with a special buy one, bet one free ticket offer and children under 12 free, RenFest  is even open on Monday this weekend.  Tickets are $22.50 for adults at the gate or conducer a season pass for $60. You can avoid the line by buying your tickets online.

Once inside the recreated 16th Century English village history and fantasy collide to offer something for everyone:

14 stages feature a full schedule of continuous entertainment. Don’t miss the hard-hitting action as the Knights of Valour joust three times each day in the Guinness Jousting Arena. Comedy and swordplay mesh as The Swordsmen showcase sharp skills with rapiers and even sharper wit. The 65-foot Galleon features a thrilling Pirate Comedy Stunt Show twice each day that is as impressive as the ship itself. Strolling musicians in the lanes include Dylan Robertson, Glass Harmonica, The Flying Dulcimer, Kyle Meadows, Captain John Stout while many a good pub song will be heard in the village pubs.

While browsing through the village enjoy a menu guaranteed to tempt your taste buds. Festival favorites such as giant roasted turkey legs, steak-on-a-stake and bread bowl soups and stews can be found as well as delicious new items. The Chocolate Raven features handmade chocolates and fudge. Archibald Drake’s features an ages old Fish and Chips recipe. KJ’s Cajun Cuisine will have a menu from across the pond and down south. Wash it all down with a wide variety of beers, ales, wines, Coca-Cola products, or coffees and teas.

The marketplace at the Ohio Renaissance Festival is a shopper’s paradise. Full of handmade wares with flare, find unique items created by world-class artisans. Witness demonstrations of time-honored crafts including glassblowing, blacksmithing, forging, leather tooling, weaving, boot making, and more. New to the marketplace this year are original artist Art of Ed Beard Jr, pewter creations by Heekin Pewter, and the beautiful floral garlands from The Royal Garland.

 

The festival also offers daily special events for those 21 and over. The Naughty Bawdy Pub Show features songs and limericks you won’t hear on the streets in an hour-long show. New this year, test your memory and play Willy Nilly Trivia during the Pub Crawl.

 

The Ohio Renaissance Festival is located in Warren County, just 2 miles west of I-71 or 15 miles east of I-75 on State Route 73. One of the largest renaissance festivals in the nation, the Ohio Renaissance Festival features a 16th Century English Village on 30+ acres, a nine-weekend season, and welcomes nearly 175,000 visitors annually.

Award-Winning Comedian & DMM Movie Writer Headlines Wiley’s Thurs, Sept. 7TH

You know him from his movie reviews on our very own site … But did you know that Tabari McCoy  is an award-winning stand-up comedian, too?

 

He would like you to consider this your official invite to see for yourself just why audiences have enjoyed having him make them laugh for over a decade.

 

McCoy (Laughs on Fox; Pandora Radio) headlines a night of Queen City comedy live at the historic Wiley’s Comedy Club at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 7th. This will be McCoy’s first time headlining Ohio’s oldest home for stand-up comedy, which is now proudly celebrating its 35th year with brand new ownership and a new – but still entertaining! – direction.

McCoy, who was one of several “Rusty Nail” award winners for developing stand-up comics at the 2008 Rooftop Comedy Festival in Aspen, Colo., has also performed at the SF Sketch Fest in San Francisco, Gilda’s Laugh Fest in Grand Rapids, MI and the initial Limestone Comedy Festival in Bloomington, IN. His debut album, Laughing with a Panther (2013 RooftopComedy), was released in physical and digital form to outlets including iTunes and Amazon Music on his birthday on Dec. 3, 2013.

 

McCoy, who says his comedy represents “an average man with average frustrations and successes in sometimes non-average situations and observations to boot,” can’t wait to take the stage at Wiley’s.

 

“Wiley’s was one of the first clubs I performed at when I was starting out and to have the chance to headline there, even just for a night, is phenomenal. The new management is putting in effort to put on quality shows, which is why I brought two former Funniest Person in Cincinnati winners to open the show,” he says. “Then again, I never won that contest and in the words of Busta Rhymes, ‘look at me now’ – I’m the headliner! Now please buy a ticket – I have to pay Bank of America the money they keep saying I owe them!”

Opening the show is 2017 Funniest Person in Cincinnati contest winner and Wiley’s Sunday Comics regular Ran Barnaclo; the feature act for the show is 2014 Funniest Person in Cincinnati winner Chris Weir. Weir also writes for Future Science, an award-winning, live, sketch comedy show a monthly show held at a music venue in downtown Cincinnati.
