Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) Can Offer Heat Relief

July 16, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

Miami Valley Community Action Partnership (MVCAP) continues to accept appointments for its Summer Crisis Program, which runs through August 31st, 2018. Households may be eligible for this benefit either in the form of an air conditioning unit, unit repair, or a one-time monetary benefit to assist with summer cooling bills.

Households with individuals who have documented medical conditions or individuals 60 years of age and older may be eligible to participate in this program. A complete list of eligibility requirements can be found on MVCAP’s website. Households needing to make an appointment for Summer Crisis relief can call 937-514-4777 or go online to schedule. Households currently enrolled in the Percentage of Income Payment Plan Plus Program are not eligible for financial assistance, but they may be eligible for other assistance.

MVCAP’s Director of Energy Assistance Programs, Keelie Gustin, says demand for these benefits has been high.

“Across the agency, we’ve seen an increase in air conditioner benefits, as well as monetary benefit expenditures. We are pleased so many individuals are able to take advantage of the Summer Crisis Program to stay cool this summer. We will continue to take appointments through August 31, 2018, and work hard to ensure we have air conditioners and funds available until that time,” Gustin said.

Once scheduled, applicants will need to bring a number of items with them to their appointment. A complete list of these items is also available at MVCAP’s website.

Golden Lamb Hosts “Dinner with History”

July 14, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

The Golden Lamb Inn is the oldest hotel in Ohio. It owes its early success due to location – halfway between Cincinnati and the National Road (now U.S. Route 40). The Golden Lamb has hosted a number of historical figures, including 12 United States Presidents (from as far back as John Quincy Adams to as recent as George W. Bush), and today is still serving excellent cuisine to guests from all over the country.

This month, the historical dinner series continues with a night dedicated to Clement Vallandigham, a rabble-rousing, controversial Copperhead politician from Ohio who served during the American civil war.

Dinner with History: Clement Vallandigham will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 28. The evening includes a three-course menu from the Golden Lamb culinary team, as well as a talk from Golden Lamb Historian John Zimkus, who will tell the tale of Vallandigham’s colorful life, and the Golden Lamb’s connection to his bizarre and untimely death. The menu for the evening includes:

  • Starter: Burrata and local tomato salad with cucumber, white balsamic vinaigrette, grilled extra-virgin olive oil scented baguette
  • Entrée course: Certified Angus Beef New York strip steak and seared scallop with goat cheese pesto mashed potatoes, local summer succotash, cabernet reduction
  • Decadence: Strawberry shortcake with pickled strawberries, vanilla whipped cream

Reservations are required and can be made by calling Golden Lamb at (513) 932-5065. Reservations are $45 per person all inclusive.

McCoy on Movies: Skyscraper

July 13, 2018 By Tabari McCoy

Dwayne Johnson flexes his dramatic muscle to lead familiar-yet-palatable Skyscraper

“You know, compared to this, taking steel chairs to the head from other men in spandex wasn’t so bad!” Will Sawyer (Dwayne Johnson) used a makeshift rappelling apparatus for reasons he’d rather not have to deal with in a scene from writer/director Rawson Marshall Thurber’s action thriller SKYSCRAPER. Credit: © 2018 Legendary Pictures Productions, LLC. and Universal Pictures. All rights reserved.

WATCH THE TRAILER(S) HERE:

KEY CAST MEMBERS: Dwayne Johnson, Neve Campbell, Chin Han, Roland Møller, Noah Cottrell, Bryon Mann, McKenna Roberts, Hannah Quinlivan, Elfina Luk, Noah Taylor, Adrian Holmes and Pablo Schreiber
WRITER(S): Rawson Marshall Thurber

DIRECTOR(S): Rawson Marshall Thurber

WEB SITE: https://www.skyscrapermovie.com/HERE’S THE STORY: Will Sawyer (Dwayne Johnson) is a simple man. A decorated military veteran, his life was changed 10 years ago when an unfortunate situation altered his life in two drastic ways: the loss of the lower half of his left leg and meeting the love of his life, his cell phone-challenged/fellow veteran/doctor wife Sarah (Neve Campbell). Now working as the proprietor of his own small security company, Will finds himself thrust into the opportunity of his working lifetime when an old military buddy (Pablo Schreiber) gets him a gig checking out “The Pearl.”

What is the Pearl? It’s the new commercial/residential structure in Hong Kong designed by billionaire Zaho Long Ji (Chin Han), who now wants Will to make sure that everything in his buildingis up to snuff before the residential half opens up (from the 96th floor on up). But what Will doesn’t know is that why he, Sarah and their two kids Georgia (McKenna Roberts) and Henry (Noah Cottrell) are enjoying their stay, there are some nefarious forces plotting a much different visit to the Pearl. That would be the ruthless assassin Xia (Hannah Quinlivan) and the mercenary Botha (Roland Møller), who are after something that Will has no knowledge of nor why.

But he and his family are about to – if they can survive the certain to be fatal scenario awaiting them in the world’s tallest skyscraper.

WHO WILL LIKE THIS FILM THE MOST? Dwayne Johnson fans who like it when he does physical roles that don’t focus on comedy; Neve Campbell fans; people who like 80s-style action movies without 80s style dialogue

WHO WON’T (OR SHOULDN’T) LIKE THIS MOVIE? People who will find some of the scenarios too implausible; those who prefer action movies that either go full-on outrageous or full-on logical; anyone who hates violent films

SO IS IT GOOD, BAD OR JUST AWFUL? An action movie that tries to balance its more (seemingly) outrageous moments with committed performances and intriguing camera work before tying together just how you’d expect (if you pay attention to all the foreshadowing), Skyscraper is an entertaining, family-involved-yet-extremely-violent at times diet Die Hard that while not original, it’s satisfying enough to keep you interested. And if that sentence seems like a mouthful, it should.

Because that’s what happens when you are catering to at least three different types of audiences at once.Johnson, as he has proven in a variety of his roles, commands attention as Will Sawyer, a man who is not invincible yet at the same time extremely determined to do what he needs to do to save the people he loves. His limited stunts seem ridiculous yet, given his commitment and approach, plausible – which, for action movies, has long been an issue for many people paying attention (skip ahead to 1:54 in that link; language NSFW!). Likewise, neither Campbell nor young co-stars Roberts or Cottrell seem to act in an over-the-top fashion, their actions instead seeming reasonable, logical and again, (somewhat) sensible given the situation in which they find themselves.Writer/director Rawson Marshall Thurber (Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, We’re the Millers) has a history of producing surprising hits, most of which are exclusively comedies. With Skyscraper, he proves he has potential to deliver an action film that, while it does not do anything to reinvent the genre, doesn’t have to be dumb, either. While it lacks a distinct quality to make it stand out from the pack – Johnson’s prosthetic leg accessory comes into play quite often, but it doesn’t always feel as handi-capable as intended – the interplay between the characters works more than it does not, the film moves along swiftly and, again, the story plays out with a good mix of brain and bravado … As best you can in this type of film. Sure, the film could have likely reached a more classic status with a full “R” rating or a

Or at least it does it enough to keep you from wanting to burn down the theater the way the Pearl does on the screen.

Kendell Thompson Named Superintendent of Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park

July 11, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

National Park Service (NPS) Midwest Regional Director Cam Sholly announced the selection of Kendell Thompson as superintendent of Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park in Dayton, Ohio. A 31-year veteran of the NPS, Thompson is currently Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial superintendent. He has served as the acting superintendent at Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park since August 2017. He assumes his new role August 5, 2018.

“I have appreciated Kendell’s performance as the acting Superintendent at Dayton Aviation over the past months and what he accomplished previously as the Superintendent of Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial,” said Sholly. “He has done an excellent job of listening and fostering relationships and will be a strong Superintendent and partner to the community.”

“It is an honor to be selected as the superintendent of Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park, a site that explores the limitless possibilities that can be accomplished by determined people,” Thompson said. “Dayton Aviation tells a story of innovation and resiliency. It celebrates how the Wright Brothers changed history, and also examines the amazing legacy of Paul Laurence Dunbar, one of America’s most revered poets. Like the Wrights and Dunbar, Dayton Aviation marks a truly innovative, partnership approach to a national park, and I am excited to join the efforts of our many partners, staff and the Miami Valley community to help tell these stories.”

For the past eight years, Thompson has served as superintendent of Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial in Lincoln City, Indiana. Originally from Oklahoma, Thompson’s career with the National Park Service spans over 42 years when he began volunteering at age 13 at Mount Rainier National Park in Washington. He has served in 13 National Park Service areas including Mount Rainier National Park, Denali National Park, Jean Lafitte National Historical Park, The USS Arizona Memorial, Arlington House, The Robert E. Lee Memorial, and Yosemite National Park. He is a second-generation ranger, following in his father’s footsteps.

Thompson earned his Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Conservation with minor degrees in botany and sociology from Southeastern Oklahoma State University and earned a law enforcement commission from the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. He has served as the editorial advisor for Ranger magazine since 2012, has authored a novel, and published multiple articles.

In his spare time, Thompson enjoys outdoor recreation, home brewing, and cooking. Along with his wife Emily and their three children, he is looking forward to exploring the Five Rivers MetroParks and hiking, biking and kayaking the many miles of Dayton’s trail system.

Iconic DAI Meets Iconic DANA….for Trivial Matters!!

July 10, 2018 By Joshua Stucky

Everyone loves trivia, and when you bring one of Dayton’s most beloved celebrities into host, you are sure to have a hoot. The Dayton Art Institute is hosting a very special night of trivia on Friday July, 13th, which includes the current Yousuf Karsh: American Portraits exhibit. “This is a fun way to get people into the museum to see this astounding set of photographs.” says DAI board member, Joshua Stucky. “It has been getting rave reviews.”

And speaking of rave reviews, enter the hostess, Dana Sintell, Dayton’s enduring drag hostess and comedienne. “This is right up my alley!” says Ms. Sintell, a 34 year veteran of the Dayton Drag culture. “My whole life has been trivial….and I would imagine I have lived through some of these historical events being asked about.”

Sintell, best known as the hostess and voice of the RubiGirls, couldn’t believe her luck in being asked. “I think the Museum knows a living work of art when they see one! The Venus Di Milo and I were good friends for God’s sake!”

The trivia night will be a full one. The Karsh exhibit will open to ticket holders at 6:30pm, followed by trivia in the Leo Bistro at 7:30pm. The event concludes at 9:00pm. Delicious food will be provided by Fusian with a cash bar available.

Sintell promises to keep things light and fun. “Trivia is supposed to be exciting and entertaining. I know some of the staff at the DAI and I bet you anything they have been looking long and hard for some great questions. This is going to be a real challenge!!” When asked about whether she will give a performance that night, Sintell quipped, “Ummm, have you met me?”

The event costs $10 for DAI members and $20 for non-members.

Acclaimed Jazz Musicians Perform With Muse Machine

July 10, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

When great jazz musicians from New York City and New Orleans team up with local artists and Muse Machine performers for a one-night-only concert, there’s only one thing you can say – The Joint Is Jumpin’.

“The musicians were returning to the area from Jazz at Lincoln Center and Jazz Power Initiative in NYC to collaborate on another project and they suggested the concert – we’d have been crazy to pass up that opportunity!” said Muse producer Douglas Merk. “These artists have experiences and careers that literally span the globe. Bringing them together with Muse performers and Dayton audiences for a creative outburst is simply exciting.”

Guest artists include drummer Alvin Atkinson, Jr., multi-instrumentalist Michael Bashaw, bassist Eddie Brookshire, vocalist/saxophonist Camille Thurman, trumpeter Ashlin Parker, pianist/vocalist Eli Yamin and jazz combo Nausikaa. More information about the performers is available at musemachine.com.  New Orleans-based choreographer Lula Elzy returns to insure the space is dancing and literally jumping to styles from standards to New Orleans to Latin American.

Muse Machine presents The Joint Is Jumpin’ at The Loft Theatre on Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at 7:00pm and 8:30pm. Tickets are $25 and $35 and are on sale exclusively through Ticket Center Stage: 937-228-3630 or musemachine.com.

Muse Machine is a nationally recognized arts education organization, providing creative experiences and resources for young people of the Miami Valley for the past 36 years. Since 1982, they have engaged thousands of students through academic-relevant lessons, workshops and in-school projects along with the highly acclaimed annual student musicals and concerts produced for the Miami Valley.

Jet Freeze: The Coolest Place in Town

July 10, 2018 By Dayton937 1 Comment

It was 8pm, Monday night June 25th at the corner of Grange Hall and Patterson Rd in Beavercreek.  The yellow shining bulbs were unmistakable. A crowd of about 50 was milling around the parking lot, or seated at picnic tables eating sundaes, cones and footlongs.

Welcome to Dayton’s beloved soft serve ice cream mecca, Jet Freeze.  The legendary Beavercreek eatery has been the place to cool off with frozen treats for over 60 years !!

There are 2 types of people.  People who love Jet Freeze and people who have never heard of it ….  We hope to change that for some of you today.  This is one of our favorite places for a Food Adventure since the early 1970’s.

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

Cherry Dipped Cone

— Jet Freeze is located in Beavercreek at 4014 E. Patterson Rd.

— Summer Hours  – NOON – 10PM,  Winter hours of 11am-7pm everyday (September – April).

— They do not have a bathroom and there is limited booth seating in dining room.  The big change this year, is after about 4 decades, the stone tables have been replaced with wooden picnic tables by the front  parking lots.

— Opened in 1957, as a mom and pop ice cream spot, it still is owned by the same family.   The third generation of which is now helping manage the coolest spot in Beavercreek.

— What is Jet Freeze’s secret to great taste?  The answer is two-fold.  First, fresh milk.  They use gallons of milk at a time as the base for the 95% fat-free treat.  Secondly, they Mix original Flavors in-house.  This is especially true for their strawberry, peanut butter and blueberry ice cream.

— Great, low prices… even the largest soft serve cones are a little more than $2. It is very cheap to eat here .  Jet Freeze has chocolate and vanilla soft serve as their mainstays and these cones are delicious.  On hot days they tend to slide, so make sure your tongue is ready to start licking !

This place has established itself as a favorite over multiple generations.  We have been coming here since Jimmy Carter was president and the same MUST EATS, then are some of the same ones now.   Here is what need to know about to make your Food Adventure to JET FREEZE the best one possible

MUST EATS:

The famous Peanut Butter Sundae

PEANUT BUTTER SUNDAE:
This is an absolute favorite for decades.  They make their own, Homemade peanut butter sauce, mixed on site.  It is a secret family recipe, guarded by a few.  The kind of thing where one bite makes you collapse in joy.  It is addicting and one of the richest, best tasting sundaes we have ever eaten. TIP: You have to get whip cream, nuts and a cherry. Those extras make the sundae.

FOOTLONG HOT DOG:
The long thin hot dog is a simple, yet delicious treat to put you in a time warp back to your youth.  It’s a no frills treat, yet hard to find in today’s world.  We recommend topping the dog with onions, mustard and relish.  Really feeling a throwback?  Order the footlong cheese coney.  It is messy, but it will make you say “yum” with your mouth full.

STRAWBERRY SOFT SERVE ICE CREAM:
Another homemade secret recipe flavor that is mixed in-house.  This flavor has really caught more traction as a favorite the past 10 years.  What kind of a cone has a cult following?  This one does, try a bite and you will see why.  It is rare to see Strawberry flavored ice cream in soft serve circles.  The management told us the strawberry flavoring is specially mixed by employees every day.  It is a one of a kind taste and some of the best we have ever had.  Again, a homemade recipe guarded by a few.

Footlong Hot Dog with Mustard and Relish !!

BANANA SPLIT:
Your typical American favorite, constructed by the book.  It  has a boat dish filled with vanilla ice cream, drizzled with hot chocolate, pineapple topping, and strawberry flavoring.  Topped off with 2 long banana slices, whipped cream and nuts, it is the monster of the menu.  Sit on the picnic table and eat this one and you will get some “oohs and aaahs” from the crowd.  A perfect treat for 4th of July.

BLUEBERRY SOFT SERVE ICE CREAM aka SMURF ICE CREAM:
The new favorite on the menu for the last couple of years.  This flavor is only available late May through early September. This is the same as the “smurf ice cream” offered at King’s Island.  It is rare and hugely popular.  Grab a big waffle cone for this flavor.  We bet you fall in love with it too.

Blueberry Ice Cream aka “Smurf Ice Cream”

Honorable Mention: The Peanut Butter and Banana Shake with chocolate ice cream.  This would make Elvis blush.  Also try the Hot Fudge Sundae (always a winner).  Finally, the Butterscotch Sundae will make you will melt into your chair with pleasure.  These 3 are creamy and dreamy.

OTHER FLAVORS:

You can catch various other flavors at certain random times through the year as the family experiments with new tastes.  Last winter we enjoyed PUMPKIN SOFT SERVE ICE CREAM.  Rumors of a PEACH ice cream  have swirled as have rumors of an ORANGE DREAMSICLE FLAVOR.

Stay tuned to this humble little shop, with the legendary reputation.  Visit and bring yourself back to a simpler time.

At Jet Freeze “cooler heads always prevail.”
