Sound Valley Summer Music Festival at Yellow Cab Tavern

August 30, 2018 By LIbby Ballengee

The inaugural Sound Valley Summer Music Festival is being held over Labor Day weekend, at the Yellow Cab Tavern on Saturday, September 1st. This festival has a dual purpose: one, to showcase talented rock bands from across the Miami Valley, and to raise awareness and funds to help combat the heroin epidemic through the local non-profit, Brigid’s Path.

“Dayton has been considered the heroin capital of the United States. We want to shift the national perspective and reclaim our reputation as a place for innovation, creativity and artistic expression through music,” Zac Pitts, co-owner of Sound Valley said.

With a full day of live music, Sound Valley Summer Music Festival will feature local rock, indie, and alternative bands, including: Life In Idle, Knavery, Beesly, Yardboss, Weathervein, NOVAGOLD, Seth Canan And The Carriers, Crosley Court, Isicle, Flee The Valley, Dave Zup, ThunderTaker, and A Voice of Your Own.

“This event is meant to connect those who want to take Dayton’s music scene to the next level.” Pitts said. “There will be two stages, both indoor and outdoor, and some amazing local food trucks throughout the day to keep hungry fans happy!”

In addition to great music, half of Sound Valley Summer Music Festival’s proceeds will benefit the Dayton organization, Brigid’s Path. This local non-profit provides inpatient medical care for drug-exposed newborns, non-judgmental support for mothers and education services to improve family outcomes. “The heroin epidemic has hit our community hard,” Pitts said. “We want to work alongside those that are taking away the stigma and standing with our neighbors who are struggling.”

Life in Idle is one of the bands set to perform at Sound Valley Music Festival at Yellow Cab Tavern on September 1, 2018.

FilmDayton’s 10th Anniversary & Sneak Peek of Dayton’s Newest Event Venue

August 30, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

FilmDayton Logo

Advancing the art, craft and business of film in the Dayton region

Created in 2008, FilmDayton’s first victory was helping the state pass a competitive film tax incentive in 2009 which would attract film projects to Ohio. Next they worked to showcase locally made films through film festivals and educate a diverse workforce to fill the jobs created as productions took advantage of The Ohio Motion Picture Tax Credit. In 2016 they officially became The Greater Dayton Film Commission, educating, promoting and advocating for growth of the local film industry. They offer concierge services to productions that include permitting, permissions, and location scouting for films to drive economic development for our 9 county region.

Movies that have filmed locally include Miles Ahead – an exploration of the life & music of Miles Davis, Goat– a fraternity drama produced by James Franco that starred Nick Jonas and most recently, The Old Man and The Gun.

Now you can celebrate FilmDayton’s 10th anniversary in the venue that served as the Dayton set for the filming of Robert Redford’s last movie, The Old Man and the Gun.

This is your chance to case the joint, just like Robert Redford did in this  bank heist drama that was filmed here last spring.

Enjoy a nosh at the craft services table, where Danny Glover spent time between takes.

You’ll have a chance to enjoy a cocktail in the bank vault and buy a key to a safety deposit box and claim the prize inside to support FilmDayton.

You can see where Casey Affleck was looking for clues to solve the bank robbery or jut take in the view from above like Tom Waits is doing here .

This space is under construction but we will be pulling back the curtains to give you a first look at Dayton’s Newest Event Venue:

The Grande HallThe Grande Hall at Liberty Tower

NEON Opening PUZZLE + Great NEON News!

August 28, 2018 By Jonathan McNeal

Hello Everyone!

We’re moving right along to wrap up one of the best summers on record at THE NEON. If you still need to see THE KING, Thursday will be your last chance to catch it with us. LEAVE NO TRACE and THREE IDENTICAL STRANGERS will hold for another week, and we’ll open a new crowdpleaser – PUZZLE.

Synopsis for PUZZLE: “PUZZLE is a closely observed portrait of Agnes, who has reached her early 40s without ever venturing far from home, family or the tight-knit immigrant community in which she was raised by her widowed father. That begins to change in a quietly dramatic fashion when Agnes receives a jigsaw puzzle as a birthday gift and experiences the heady thrill of not only doing something she enjoys, but being very, very good at it. Stepping out of her domestic bubble to pursue her new hobby, Agnes meets Robert, a wealthy, reclusive inventor who immediately recognizes her talent and recruits her as his partner for an upcoming world jigsaw tournament. Each day she spends out in the world, puzzling and conversing with Robert, takes Agnes further along on the road to a new understanding of herself and her strengths.” Click on this LINK to visit the film’s official site.

Get Your Tickets For Joe Head’s One Man Bourbon Show

August 28, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

Voted to the top of  The Bourbon Review’s “America’s 75 Best Bourbon Bars,” each year since 2014 and named by Men’s Journal as one of the “10 Best Bourbon Bars in America, this historic Miami Valley bourbon house has turned many a Daytonian into a bourbon lover.

According to Whiskey Advocate The “Century Bar has built its reputation in the trenches, pouring education with every shot and picking fine private selections of Wild Turkey, Four Roses, and Buffalo Trace. They have the largest bourbon collection in the state of Ohio.”  Much of that credit is due to co-owner Joe Head, who’s passion for bourbon has made him an in demand celebrity at bourbon festivals across the midwest.  The bar, which has been open since 1942 had hit a lull in business and as a bartender there Joe knew they needed something to revive business.  He talked owner Diane Spitzig into changing the bar from what had become know as a metal bar into specializing in bourbon.  Head proceeded to change the bar offerings and the clientele and became Diane’s business partner in what has become Dayton’s most nationally know drinking establishment.

.

In honor of Bourbon Heritage month this September, Joe will be doing three “One Man Bourbon Show ” blind bourbon tastings.

These will take place here at the Century on Wednesday the 12th ,19th and 26th of September. These will be very intimate, as we are limiting each night to only 12 attendees. The only place you can purchase your tickets is at the Century, located downtown at 10 S Jefferson Street, starting this Thursday August 30th at 3:00 pm. Tickets are $75 per person.  Having attended Joe’s tastings before, I can assure you it will be highly educational in a fun way.  Joe’s storytelling alone is worth the ticket price.  But hurry, these tastings will sell out quickly!

‘The Little Foxes’ Review – Dayton Theatre Guild – Southern Scoundrels

August 26, 2018 By Russell Florence, Jr.

Lillian Hellman’s riveting 1939 drama The Little Foxes excellently launches the Dayton Theatre Guild’s 2018-2019 season.
Set in the Alabama spring of 1900, this compelling, three-act saga – methodically directed by Kathy Mola, beautifully costumed by Carol Finley, and attractively designed by Chris Harmon – concerns greed spinning out of control among a dysfunctional, power-hungry family. Brothers Oscar and Benjamin Hubbard (Saul Caplan and Dave Nickel, respectively) along with their sister Regina Giddens (Cheryl Mellen) are excited to invest in a new cotton mill, but Regina can’t sign on because her late father didn’t see fit to leave her on equal financial footing with them. As so, she turns to her sickly husband Horace (Don Campbell) for approval, but he has other ideas in mind. Still, Regina has the last laugh in a shockingly disgraceful display of betrayal and revenge opening the door to a future likely to leave her abandoned, regretful and paranoid despite her bank account.

(left to right) Maximillian Santucci (Leo Hubbard), Gail Andrews Turner (Addie), Saul Caplan (Oscar Hubbard), Libby Holley Scancarello (Birdie Hubbard), Jeff Sams (William Marshall), Cheryl Mellen (Regina Giddens), and Hannah Stickel (Alexandra Giddens) in Dayton Theatre Guild’s production of “The Little Foxes.” (Contributed photo)

Mola skillfully handles the play’s juicy melodrama, coaxing performances from her cohesive cast that are grounded rather than overdone. Caplan (in a refreshing departure from comedic roles) and Nickel (very impressive) are terrifically devious cohorts.

Libby Holley Scancarello (Birdie Hubbard) and Hannah Stickel (Alexandra Giddens) in Dayton Theatre Guild’s production of “The Little Foxes.” (Contributed photo)

In particular, Nickel wonderfully juggles Benjamin’s smooth charisma and furious rage. Mellen dynamically thrives in Act 3 as Regina’s manipulative instincts hit overdrive, but I would’ve liked to have seen the same kind of ferocity applied from her first entrance. Campbell, in one of his finest roles, offers a superb showdown with Mellen late in Act 2 when Horace finally realizes the scope of Regina’s ambition. As Regina’s fragile, alcoholic sister-in-law Birdie Hubbard, Oscar’s wife, the outstanding Libby Holley Scancarello exceptionally explores Birdie’s inability to break free from the monsters surrounding, suffocating and destroying her. She fills the overlooked, ostracized, battered, and abused character with expressive angst throughout, specifically her captivating monologue reflecting on the first time Birdie met Oscar, a day that led to her dreadful unhappiness for the next 22 years. By and large, Scancarello is just as marvelous and vital here as she was as Mrs. Sylvia Fowler in the Dayton Playhouse’s 2017 production of The Women.

In addition, Maximillian Santucci shines as Oscar and Birdie’s hopelessly inept and immature son Leo, Hannah Stickel supplies gentle innocence and acute perceptiveness as Regina and Horace’s daughter Alexandra, Jeff Sams effortlessly charms while hobnobbing in a den of deceivers as Chicago industrialist William Marshall, and Gail Andrews Turner and Steve Easterling are fittingly sharp as Regina and Horace’s dutiful servants Addie and Cal. Turner notably contributes to an engaging discussion at the top of Act 3 focusing on the play’s friendlier characters taking a respite from familial squabbles and wickedness.

Without question, The Little Foxes remains a relevant cautionary tale of pursuing the American Dream with backbiting, destructive intentions. God bless the U.S.A.

The Little Foxes continues through Sept. 2 at the Dayton Theatre Guild, 430 Wayne Ave., Dayton. Performances are at 8 p.m. Friday, 5 p.m. Saturday, and 3 p.m. Sunday. The play is performed in three acts running 40 minutes each with two intermissions. Tickets are $20 for adults, $18 for seniors, and $13 for students. For more information, call (937) 278-5993 or visit daytontheatreguild.org.

FOA Rally 4 Recovery At Courthouse Square Today

August 26, 2018 By Bill Franz

For the second year in a row, Montgomery County in 2017 had the state’s highest rate of accidental overdose deaths. But Dayton people are working hard to address this problem, and the death rate has slowed dramatically in recent months.

One group that’s done a lot is FOA Families of Addicts, a grass-roots recovery support group founded by Dayton’s Lori Erion. The organization is hosting the 5th Annual Rally 4 Recovery today from 3:00 to 6:00 pm at Courthouse Square. I was one of their volunteer photographers last year, and I’m looking forward to taking photos again today.

This photo from last year shows some of the 2,200 people who attended. The man in the suit in the lower left is guest speaker (and Ohio’s Attorney General) Mike DeWine.

For more information about Families of Addicts, or to donate, visit http://www.foafamilies.org/.

The FOA Rally 4 Recovery goal is to unite the people and resources of our community to raise awareness about substance use and mental health disorders, eliminate the stigma associated with them and SHOW that RECOVERY WORKS.

50 Resources will be in attendance!

Trotwood to Re-Open Renovated Cultural Center

August 25, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

The City of Trotwood is proud to re-dedicate the Trotwood Community and Cultural Arts Center on Sunday, August 26, continuing its push to revitalize the creative and cultural aspects of the city alongside its established economic growth.

Special thanks are extended to Trotwood City Mayor Mary A. McDonald and State Representative Jeffrey Rezabek, 43 District, who recognized the community’s needs and worked to secure the funding and resources necessary to renovate and re-open the facility.

“I am extremely proud of Mayor Mary A. McDonald and the Trotwood City Council for their vision of this extraordinary community asset.” said Quincy Pope Sr., Trotwood City Manager. “This community and cultural arts center will positively impact Trotwood residents for decades to come.”

The effort to renovate the center is part of a larger campaign led by Mayor McDonald and the Trotwood City employees to achieve lasting growth within the city. Alongside drawing economic growth into the community by providing businesses an attractive place to grow, efforts like the rededication of the Community and Cultural Arts Center seek to give Trotwood an even stronger community foundation.

“The Trotwood Community and Cultural Arts Center will serve the Trotwood citizens as a great community asset for many years to come.” said Mayor McDonald. “We are excited for the many great future opportunities it will bring.”

The rededication ceremony takes place from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm Sunday at the Community and Cultural Arts Center, located at 4000 Lake Center Drive.

Musical guest, C. Baccus will be providing live entertainment during the event, and light refreshments will be offered as well.

In a small Alabama town in the year 1900, a southern family’s selfish pursuit of the American Dream ends up destroying them and those they love. But Regina’s terminally ill husband, Horace, refuses to give them the money they need. In the end, blood and money mix with money coming out on top, leaving a broken family behind
