10 ?’s with Chef Stephanie Schifrin Salas

January 11, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

Cincinnati native and University of Cincinnati alumna, Stephanie Schifrin Salas was born to be a chef. Early on, while watching PBS’s original celebrity chef, Julia Child, Stephanie was enthralled with all things cooking. Her junior high classmates began referring to her as “Chef Steph” well before her graduation from Queen City Culinary Academy and the Culinary Institute of America.

Feeding larger groups has become Chef Stephanie’s niche. Cooking at home for two or four people has become increasingly difficult as she has grown accustomed to feeding the masses.

Chef Stephanie’s cooking style is a modern mix of classic flavors. She has a flair for taking ordinary ingredients and making them extraordinary.

Chef Stephanie accepted the position of Executive Chef at The Dayton Club atop the Kettering Tower this past July. While she stays busy helping the club through it’s rebrand, she also found time to answer our Chef 10 ? interview.

What is your favorite ingredient to cook with?

Fresh herbs & citrus…they add so much flavor and acidity to dishes and allow me to use less salt!

What ingredient do you dread?

Anything in a can!

What’s your favorite dish to make?

Soups & sauces. I was classically trained as a saucier out of culinary school & my first Chef taught me if I could make a good soup or sauce; I could make ANYTHING!

What’s your favorite pig out food?

It’s either a good pizza or bowl of really awesome pasta.

What restaurant, other than your own, do you like to dine at in the Miami Valley?

I am a fan of The Paragon, Thai 9, Corner Kitchen, Mamma DiSalvo’s.

What’s your best advice for home chefs?

Don’t over complicate things…if it tastes great & your friends & family love it…then it’s a win! The pics on Pinterest, social media & recipe books don’t always get it right!! Cook from your heart & soul…the rest will follow

If you could invite any 4 guests to a dinner party who would they be and why?

Julia Child, Ronald Reagan, My Grandpa Stu & Michael Jordan…to discuss the world, sports, cooking, my love of all of them and how they all individually had a part of shaping me to be the talented chef (& fan of things sports & politics) that I am today

Who do you look up to in the industry and why?

Other strong & talented women in our business that succeed and grow—that are willing to share their stories and knowledge with others. Those (like me) who mentor and challenge young chefs to do better, to be humble, to learn the craft from the ground up and take a piece and part from every cook, utility worker, chef, FOH co-worker, GM, bartender you come into contact with—you never know when you will work with them again…and you never know what trick of the trade they will teach you…inspire you with or motivation you will want to share with a protégée in the future!

What do you do in the Miami Valley on a day off?

Spend time with good friends & loved ones checking out locally owned shops, restaurants, galleries & museums. I love learning about the history of the Miami Valley area and have used a great deal of its people & places as inspirations in my new menus here at the Dayton Club.

Share a kitchen disaster, lucky break or other interesting story:

Funny sports related laugh…when I was the Executive Chef @ Soldier Field in Chicago my Game Day Kitchen was on one of the Skybox levels in the stadium…I had the pleasure of coming in to find Paris Hilton, Jim Belushi, Bill Murray and other famous celebrities helping my line cooks bang out orders during a rush! They were lost…but it was always so much fun watching them play along with my staff!!

McCoy on Movies: If Beale Street Could Talk

January 11, 2019 By Tabari McCoy

Cincinnati native KiKi Layne shines bright in writer/director
Barry Jenkins adaptation of If Beale Street Could Talk

“Girl, I love you … But you’re kind of killing my left shoulder right now …” Fonny (Stephan James) contemplates his next move while Tish (KiKi Layne) ponders their future in a scene from IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK. Credit: Tatum Mangus / Annapurna Pictures. © 2018 Annapurna Releasing, LLC. All rights reserved.

WATCH THE TRAILER(S) HERE:

KEY CAST MEMBERS: KiKi Layne, Stephan James, Regina King, Colman Domingo, Brian Tyree Henry, Michael Beach, Teyonah Parris, Finn Wittrock, Dave Franco, Emily Rios, Ed Skrein and Aujanue Ellis

DIRECTOR(S): Barry Jenkins
WEB SITE: http://www.bealestreet.movie/
THE BACK STORY: Based on the novel of the same name by James Baldwin, If Beale Street Could Talk stars newcomer KiKi Layne as Tish, a 19 year-old New York resident (the opening title card explains why a movie set in NYC takes its title from a famous New Orleans locale) who is in love with Alfonso (Stephan James) – Fonny for short. The young lovers embrace each other completely having known each other for years, producing the sort of romance that young people have dreamed of for centuries.

But their relationship is not without its problems for certain.

There’s Fonny’s sisters (Ebony Obisidian and Dominique Thorne)  and mother (Aujanue Ellis) who doesn’t exactly approve of Tish or the situation she’s gotten Fonny into …. But if you think Tish’s mother (Regina King) or sister (Teyonah Parris) is going to just let them run down their family, however, you, like them, have another thing coming. At least Fonny’s dad (Michael Beach) and Tish’s father (Colman Domingo) get along. Fonny’s friend Daniel (Brian Tyree Henry) is having a rough go of things, too, following his release from prison.

But none of those problems are anything compared to what lies ahead when Fonny is accused of raping a woman (Emily Rios) by a police officer who may or may not have an axe to grind …

THE REVIEW: It’s romantic. It’s majestic. It’s infuriating. It’s depressing. It’s soulful. It’s upbeat. It’s melancholy. It’s heartbreaking. It’s artistic. It’s creative.  It’s hopeful. It’s frustrating. It’s raw and it’s unapologetic. In short, If Beale Street Could Talk is the African-American experience captured in two hours for the world to see.Certain movies strike cords with certain audiences more than others. For as many people loved Black Panther, the film showed the economic power that African-Americans have in catapulting what could have been just another superhero movie into an Academy Award contender. I mention this because while the critical acclaim for If Beale Street Could Talk is widespread (just Google it – ok, I did the work for you), it’s inherently bound to resonate with African-American audiences just a little bit more than others because of how dynamically it nails down various parts of what being black in America is like today as much as it did when its source material was first published in 1974.

There’s the fragile look of heartbreak and envy Henry gives as his character watches the interplay between Tish and Fonny and knowing he will likely never enjoy it … There’s the #metoo creepiness of watching Tish be subtly sexually assaulted by a white male customer under the guise of shopping … Beale Street delivers more nuanced facets of the struggles many African-Americans face in a country where they are often reminded they are and that there will always be some that view them second-class citizens. The police scenes are why I made the “infuriating” comment above, especially in lieu of the continued incidents like this and this and this and this and … Thus, anyone still wanting to have a conversation to determine their level of “woke” may find Beale Street to be either the perfect conversation starter … or ender.

On a positive note, there are the happy moments that prove the human experience, however has no color and can be enjoyed by everyone. This includes watching Dave Franco’s character bond with Fonny over a potential living space, Domingo and King’s coming to Tish’s aid and the love and chemistry between James and Layne as Fonny and Tish. Forget the earlier commentary made about how the film will strike an extra accord with African-Americans; the way in which screenwriter/director Barry Jenkins (the guy who made 2017’s Academy Awards Best Picture winner Moonlight) shoots their scenes will possibly inspire plenty of Match.com/eHarmony accounts in hopes of finding a love like theirs. Layne and James are the heart of the movie, its driving force and its beacon of hope not only for each other, but also the audience watching it.

If Beale Street Can Talk has plenty to say – which is why the words “must see” are the only two you really need in regards to whether or not you should.

Montgomery County Artists Awarded $31,000

January 10, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

12 Montgomery County artists will receive a total of over $31,000 in grants in 2019 through the Artist Opportunity Grant program, which is funded by the Montgomery County Arts & Cultural District (MCACD) and administered by Culture Works.

The Artist Opportunity Grant program was created in 2016 to help local artists take advantage of specific, imminent opportunities for professional development and the creation or completion of new work. “Artists in our region are incredibly community minded,” said Culture Works Executive Director Lisa Hanson. “They invest countless hours into community projects and collaborations. We want to make sure that they also have the opportunity to invest in themselves, whether that means building their skills or simply carving out time to focus on creating.”

Since the first grant cycle, 33 Montgomery County artists have been selected by independent review panels to receive over $80,000 in grants. When making funding recommendations, panelists consider each project’s artistic merit, feasibility, potential impact on the artist, and potential impact on the larger community. “As one of our past panelists said, the better the artists in our community, the better our community,” said MCACD Executive Director Matt Dunn. “Year after year, we’ve been impressed with the quality of project proposals we’ve received from Montgomery County’s artists, and we’re proud to support their endeavors.”

Mikee Huber

Opportunity: To attend a photography workshop with Colleen Miniuk-Sperry to hone her skills for nature photography.
Artist Statement: “Controlled chaos” is fitting for the approach I take with the mediums and unconventional tools I use in creating my paintings, as well as a reflection of the busy lives many of us live. Tongue depressors, toothpicks, eyedroppers, tweezers, and my fingers dance across the canvas, taking the place of the traditional paintbrush to combine layers of paint, glitter, glue, and foil leaf. Most of my paintings are untitled to allow the viewer to have their own personal emotional connection. When viewing my paintings some may see geodes, seascapes, or a microscopic organic new world where others may remember their grandmother’s garden. The fluid movements lead the eyes from abstract landscapes and pools of color into the unknown, begging the viewer to see their own story. My obsession with abstracts found in science and nature help fuel my experimentation with fluid oil-based mixed mediums, which allows a creative process that is both calming and energizing. As a graphics designer at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, I draw inspiration for my mixed medium abstracts from intriguing imagery scientists and engineers produce for their research. I enjoy interpreting and reimagining factual data into colorful realms of possibility. I often allow viewers to touch the glossy surfaces of the paintings and enjoy their reactions of wonder revealed by how the surface feels. Therefore, I encourage those viewing the paintings online to zoom in to see the details. Areas that appear rough can be as smooth as glass while some areas appear smooth yet can have a texture, thus surprising the viewer. I also experiment with scale, my paintings range in size from a quaint 4”x4” to an expansive 36”x48”.

Opportunity: To originate a one-person show about a woman with dissociative identity disorder.

Gabriela Pickett

Opportunity: To attend a two-week residency with artist Artemio Rodriguez to develop her skills as a printmaker by better understanding the techniques that stem from medieval engravers that rely on simple lines to create an image.
About the Artist: Gabriela is a native of Mexico. Coming from a long line of artists, she studied art at Wright State University in the United States. Her life is full of experiences that have allowed her to develop her talent as an artist. When Gabriela paints or creates sculptures she uses a fusion of influences from her native country. Gabriela aims at raising awareness regarding the living conditions of the Mexican indigenous people who have been marginalized by economic realities and social discrimination.
As an activist, Gabriela uses her art as a venue for social commentary in the hope that indigenous people are not forgotten. In an era where Zapatistas have put down their guns and use words as a weapon against tyranny, she uses her art to complement the messages of peace and respect for human rights emanating from the jungles of Mexico. Her landscapes are memories of her childhood recorded for posterity. As urbanization takes over the Mexican landscape, Gabriela wants to show the world the beauty of Mexico’s countryside before it fades away.

New Year, New Home For The Collaboratory

January 10, 2019 By Dayton Most Metro

After 7.5 years on Courthouse Square, the The Collaboratory, Dayton’s Civic Innovation Lab, is starting 2019 in it’s new home in the Talbott Tower concourse, located at West First and Ludlow. “Although  a regional organization, The Collaboratory is committed to remaining in the urban core, and being part of the ongoing downtown revitalization,” says founder Peter Benkendorf.   The Collaboratory moves ideas to action, providing infrastructure for people and organizations to collaboratively develop community initiatives that generate new economic, civic and creative opportunities and value. The result is a healthier, more thriving region.”

Even if you haven’t heard about The Collaboratory, you may have experienced some of their initiatives since they began in  January of 2009:

Blue Sky Project- An artist-centered program committed to producing significant works of contemporary art

The 510 Project  a collaboration with Loretta Puncer and Gallery 510

The Ten Living Cities Symposium, a response to the 2008 Forbes Ten Fastest Dying Cities list;

The TECH-ARTS Collaboration with the Air Force Research Lab and the Wright Brothers Institute; Dayton Ohio

You Are Here! an insurgent civic pride multidisciplinary arts installation

The Collaboration Accelerator, now a part of the Institute of Applied Creativity for Transformation at the University of Dayton

3rd on Third/3rd Sundays at Front Street outdoor market

The Arts Collaboratory, an alternative arts space at West Second and Ludlow

Dayton Sewing Collaborative, now an independent non-profit organization

Dayton Porchfest, a free neighborhood music festival in St. Anne’s Hill that highlights the depth and diversity of the Dayton music scene. The 3rd Annual Dayton Porchfest is Saturday, August 24.

We asked Peter to tells us what’s on the agenda for 2019 and he shared that it’s looking to be a very busy year.  Here’s what’s in progress or coming online are:

Wellcare Miami Valley is looking to develop a regional approach to universal healthcare and wellness

X FACTOR is re-imagining ex-offender re-entry from the perspective of formerly incarcerated individuals while trying to change how the community sees ex-offenders;

Dayton Regional Solar, a collaboration with students from the University of Dayton’s Hanley Sustainability Institute, is building a movement for solar and renewable energy in the region;

Next Chapter Collaborative is being incubated at The Collaboratory. It helps individuals 55+ think about a final career change or develop a professional or volunteer engagement plan when looking to downshift from full-time work.

In the spring we will we relaunching a national philanthropic web site to support civic innovation around the country. Developed by a young Chicago-based entrepreneur who co-founded a start-up that was funded on Shark Tank in 2015, The Collaboratory is building a national leadership team, as we look to disrupt philanthropy and impact by engaging Millennials and GenZs.

We are also working with local developers involved in the Santa Clara to jump-start residential migration to this historic neighborhood in the heart of the North Main Street corridor. Lastly, we are convening a community conversation we are calling “Re-Imagining America, Starting in Dayton”. It is our response to the September Frontline/ProPublica documentary. Just like the Forbes Ten Fast Dying Cities list opened the door for the Ten Living Cities symposium, so too has the Frontline piece given us permission engage in a very different way around what the future of our region could look like.

How can people get involved?

There are two ways to engage with The Collaboratory:

1) get involved in one of our initiatives and

2) bring us an idea fro something you want to start to see how we can help you move your idea to action. Contact us at: [email protected] or 937.732.5123

Peter Benkendorf

Our final question to Peter was what else should we know?

No other city in the country has a space like The Collaboratory, part civic innovation lab, part community collaboration hub. What makes us particularly unique is our ability to work in and cross-pollinate from so many different parts of the community, from legacy poverty, food access and healthcare, to the arts, solar energy and neighborhood revitalization.

If you want to support the work of The Collaboratory with a tax-deductible donation, please visit our web site at www.daytoncollaboratory.org and click the DONATE button. Checks can be made out and sent to Involvement Advocacy (the legal entity—The Collaboratory is a d/b/a), P.O. Box 10506, Dayton, Ohio 45402.

Eudora Open New Tap Room This Friday

January 9, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

It was one of the worst kept secrets in the beer business, when news of Eudora Brewing Company‘s expansion started leaking out last year.  Owner Neil Chabot opened the original brewery in November of 2013 in a strip center on Wilmington Pike in Kettering. Their 3 barrel brewing system just couldn’t keep up with the demand and the tap room was often at capacity.  They officially announced the new location last summer and the move wouldn’t be far, just a couple miles north on Wilmington Pike.  The new location, just south of Dorothy Lane is an old Pep Boys auto shop and is 20,000 square feet,  about six times the size of the original space, which shut down in October so they could start the move.

I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek of the new facility, which will open to the public this Friday at 4pm. My first impression- WOW!  The spot is huge, wide open and really inviting!  They’ve kept enough of the original breweries decor and feel to make it feel familiar, but now it’s ready for big crowds!

Coming with them from the old spot were the Brew Your Own kettles, Eudora is the only place in the Miami Valley where customers can book time to brew their own beer.   Whether you’ve brewed before or you have no idea what you’re doing, their staff will guide you through every step of the process and make it as easy and as fun as possible. It’s a great team building experience, can serve as a fun idea for a bachelor party and the best part can be creating your own beer label. Al

Reservations for this brewing experience is on hold, as they have some equipment repairs to make, but they’ll begin taking reservations soon.

GAMING AREA

The pinball machine and video gaming systems also made the move and the have their own expanded dedicated area in the new venue.  Adding to the fun is the vintage bowling game and an expanded selection of board games and tables to spread out and play.

New additions to the tap room include two pool tables, which will offer free play, a large lounge area in front of the fireplace with leather couches, a huge patio with seating for over 100 and areas for cornhole as well as a fire pit.

charity: water

Also continuing, Eudora Brewing Co. will donate a portion of EVERY sale toward funding a water project for those in need of clean water.  They donate to a charity called “charity: water” whose mission is to end the water crisis happening all over the world. They’re a non-profit organization that donates 100% (yes, 100%) of the money contributed to help people in need of clean water. With each purchase you make at Eudora, you’re helping charity: water build wells and water purification systems in villages, schools and clinics in areas where water is difficult to obtain.

The custom built bar made locally by Jett’s Creek Woodworking is huge and gives plenty of spots to belly up to the 18 taps  and a nitro cold brew coffee system as well.

The new brewing system has increased to a 10 barrel brewing  system, and with the addition of brewmaster Jeff Fortney to the crew, Eudora has been brewing to get ready for the onslaught of beer lovers that have been awaiting a pint of Mother-Fuggle, Bangarang, The Bees-Kees or Thunberball.

Private Party Room

Speaking of Thunderball, that’s the name of the private room, available for booking for private functions.  Seating about 30, it’s decked out with table seating, a tv, whiteboards with a great view of the brewing area. Rates will run about $25-$50/hour, based of

Eudora Kitchen

But the biggest addition to Eudora is the new kitchen!  Owner Chabot knows a lot about brewing beer, but admits he knows nothing about running a kitchen, so he contracted with consultant Jonathan Kouse of Chef Therapy Group to help design the kitchen, hire Dylan and James for the kitchen crew and create the menu offerings.

Here’s the opening menu, but remember this is  new and menu items and prices will probably change as they work through the opening weeks of the  new eatery.

Dayton at Work and Play: Surjit SIngh Mattu

January 9, 2019 By Bill Franz

Surjit Singh Mattu plays a part in one of our holiday traditions. When our daughters and their families come back to Dayton they must have at least one meal from his restaurant, Amar India (2751 Miamisburg Centerville Road). Amar was a favorite of our daughters when they were young. They’ve eaten in many other Indian restaurants since leaving home, but when they are in Dayton they must return to Amar.

During my last visit to the restaurant I learned a little about Mr. Mattu. He came to Dayton in 1984. He chose Dayton because his brother-in-law was teaching at U.D. and he wanted to be close to family.

When he first came to the U.S. from India, Mr. Mattu was an electrician. But he started to work in restaurants on the side and liked it. He opened Amar India in 1991 and now also owns two other Indian restaurants in Dayton – one in Beavercreek and one on Miller Lane, north of downtown.

On the wall at Amer India there is a newspaper article about Mr. Mattu. I love what he said when the newspaper asked what advice he would give to other immigrant business owners.

“You must adapt and embrace the culture you are in now. Make it better by incorporating the culture you brought in. That’s the real America. America is a better and prosperous nation because different cultures created an awesome society.”

Amar India

At Amar India Restaurant, we believe that a buffet is often the best way to get acquainted with a new cuisine, as compared to going for the a la carte option. Our buffet services are available 7 days a week.

On Screen at The Neon

January 8, 2019 By Jonathan McNeal

We’re cleaning house this weekend…so if you need to see MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS  or THE FAVOURITE , you only have until Thursday to catch them at THE NEON.   I’m so delighted with what’s happening.  We’d initially thought we wouldn’t be able to bring IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK, but everything changed yesterday afternoon.  This beautiful, powerful film shouldn’t be missed on the big screen.  And as planned, we’re bringing the inspiring story of Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s early law career – ON THE BASIS OF SEX  (and don’t forget that we have a special preview screening of this film this Thursday evening).
Synopsis for IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK: Directed by Barry Jenkins (MOONLIGHT), and based on the novel by James Baldwin, this stunning film just earned a Golden Globe for Regina King and could be a big Oscar contender this year.  “Set in early-1970s Harlem, IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK is a timeless and moving love story of both a couple’s unbreakable bond and the African-American family’s empowering embrace, as told through the eyes of 19-year-old Tish Rivers (screen newcomer KiKi Layne – a Cincinnati native). A daughter and wife-to-be, Tish vividly recalls the passion, respect and trust that have connected her and her artist fiancé Fonny. Friends since childhood, the devoted couple dream of a future together but their plans are derailed when Fonny is arrested for a crime he did not commit. Through the unique intimacy and power of cinema, IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK honors the author’s prescient words and imagery, charting the emotional currents navigated in an unforgiving and racially biased world as the filmmaker poetically crosses time frames to show how love and humanity endure.” (Annapurna) Click on the image below to visit the film’s official site.
Synopsis for ON THE BASIS OF SEX: “On the Basis of Sex is inspired by the true story of a young Ruth Bader Ginsburg – then a struggling attorney and new mother – who faces adversity and numerous obstacles in her fight for equal rights throughout her career. When Ruth takes on a groundbreaking tax case with her husband, attorney Martin Ginsburg, she knows it could change the direction of her career and the way the courts view gender discrimination. The film also chronicles the storybook-like romance between Ruth and Marty, a partnership that succeeded both personally and professionally.” (Focus Features)  Click on the image below to visit the film’s official site.
Presented by Lotus Health LLC, WEED THE PEOPLE will screen one time on Thursday, January 17 at 7:30.  “Lotus Health LLC in Mason, Ohio is a holistic medical practice focusing on the health and well being of the community. Owner and healthcare provider Teaera Roland has studied the medicinal and industrial uses of cannabis for almost 13 years. First things first: Educate the community on the truth of the healing powers of this natural plant. This is not so easy when an entire generation of people has been lied to for the purpose of the political and financial gain of the few. The role of any medical provider is to present each client with all available options, even when not the most popular. Join Lotus Health LLC in learning about the possibilities of healing naturally and effectively with this amazing documentary. Bring your questions, comments, and stories of your own. Reserve your seat with a $5 facility fee donation.” (Lotus Health LLC)  THE NEON has begun taking reservations at our box office and via the “Tickets” link on our official site – www.neonmovies.com.
On Thursday, February 13 at 7:30, Dayton-based filmmaker Christian Gentry will host the premier of his latest short film.  ” THAT’S LIFE is a short film about an aging, out-of-touch musician who tries to save his dating life with a young woman he meets in the city. It stars local actors Vince Hobart Smith as the musician, Paul, as well as Maile Spencer, and previous Gentry-collaborator Erika Baxter.  The film was written and directed by Christian Gentry, a local 18 year old filmmaker from Dayton. Christian took inspiration from the likes of Woody Allen and Noah Baumbach films for THAT’S LIFE, both using themes and style foreign to Gentry’s long run as a successful student artist. He has made several short films in the past three years, most recently writing the awarding-winning FINAL REBOOT, co-writing the film GOOD KIDS and writing/directing the short film REALITY, which won a Gold Key at the 2017 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. This one-time Dayton screening includes a presentation from the filmmakers as well as a Q/A with Christian and some of the cast and crew afterwards.” (taken from press notes) Tickets are $7 and are available at THE NEON’s box office and via the “Tickets” link on our official site.
We hope to see you soon,
Jonathan

Xenia Native Wins Horse Racing Championship

January 8, 2019 By Dayton Most Metro

Former North American dash champion Dan Noble, who won that title in 2011 with 773 victories, accumulated 112 points over his eight drives on Tuesday afternoon (Jan. 8) to capture the 2019 edition of Miami Valley Raceway’s annual $25,000 North America Drivers Championship.  He follows in the footsteps of Doug McNair and Trace Tetrick, who won the $10,000 first prize in the initial two competitions.

Noble trailed Brett Miller by eight points with just one race remaining.  The 36-year-old native of nearby Xenia, Ohio, managed a second place finish with Rockin Hot Lady to earn 20 valuable points.  Miller, unfortunately, finished last in the final event and finished with 100 points—good for second place in the final standings and $5000 in prize money.

Drew Monti, the leading driver on the Buffalo/Batavia circuit, finished a strong third (95 points) to win a $3000 bonus payday.  Travis Henry (87) from Ontario won $2000 for his fourth place finish, followed by Randy Tharps (86, $1500),  2015 World Drivers Championship winner Dexter Dunn (85, $1250), Jeremy Smith (76, $1000), Joe Bonjiorno (67, $750), Aaron Merriman (53, $500) and Anthony Napolitano (39).

Noble is the first local reinsman to win the NADC at Miami Valley.  The son of the late, great Ohio Hall Of Famer Chip Noble grew up about 25 miles from Miami Valley and is the fourth generation Noble to occupy the same barn at the Xenia Fairgrounds over the years.  A winner of 5,465 races, Noble lists a 1:47.4 career fastest mile behind Pet Rock, winning the prestigious Kaltenbach Award as the leading Ohio Sires Stakes driver of the year, and his national dash championship as his most memorable highlights.

“Winning this championship, especially so close to home, ranks right up there with those other highlight moments though,” exclaimed a jubilant Noble on his way back from the winner’s circle presentation to the paddock.

Noble’s 112 points came on the strength of one win, one place finish, two show finishes, two fourths, a sixth and a seventh place finish over the eight races with ten-horse fields.

The eight winners during the Championship Round were: The Optimist (Brett Miller, $6.20), Desires Lady (Dan Noble, $18.40), Twin B Honour (Joe Bonjiorno, $3.60), Cool Like That (Drew Monti, $14.80), One Sweet Woman (Randy Tharps, $12.80), E R Hilary (Travis Henry, $10.40), Colonys Best (Dexter Dunn, $28.80) and Northernflightlady (Tharps, $11.00).

Following the winner’s circle presentation, Noble was rushed back to the paddock where he had to literally run inside to get a whip and run to jump on the sulky as the horses entered the track for his final mount of the day in a $4000 overnight event.  In typical Noble fashion, he won again with Crombie A, returning $6.80 to his faithful at the windows.

Dayton Children’s Launches Kids Express

January 8, 2019 By Dayton Most Metro

innovative new concept for when “Dr. Mom” needs a second opinion on the small stuff

Dayton Children’s Hospital will open Kids Express in Springboro on Wed, Jan 9th – the trial of a new concept in pediatric-focused health care. It combines the convenience of a retail clinic approach and online scheduling with the pediatric expertise of a specially trained nurse practitioner. While there are a lot of retail clinics for adults, this is the only one in Ohio with care that is just right for kids and focused on their unique needs.

“We know that parents are busy and need options,” says Deborah Feldman, president and CEO of Dayton Children’s. “We also know that when their child gets sick, many times they already have a pretty good idea what is wrong. We wanted to give them an option for care that they can trust is kid-focused but is also easy and fast.”

Kids Express is located at 662 North Main Street in Springboro, Ohio, to take care of low-acuity conditions. If their pediatrician’s office is full or closed, parents can choose Kids Express. Similar to making an appointment at a pediatrician’s office, parents should save their spot online to make sure their visit is at a convenient time for them and to reduce the amount of time spent in the waiting room. When they arrive at Kids Express, a pediatric trained nurse practitioner will assess and treat their illness or injury.

Kids Express sees children ages 6 weeks to 18 years old, from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm seven days a week.  Parents can bring their children in for everyday issues such as:

  • Seasonal allergies
  • Sinus infection
  • Colds
  • Flu
  • Sore/strep throats
  • Earaches and ear infections
  • Minor cuts and bruises (no stitches)
