Cookies Power Amazing Experiences for Girl Scouts

January 4, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

It’s that time again.
For the 102nd year, Girl Scouts are selling their famous cookies!

The best-selling cookie is still the Thin Mint with Samoas in second place, the organization said. Introduced in 2017, the S’more became “the most popular flavor to launch” in Girl Scouts’ history.  Toffee-tastic (buttery cookies with toffee bits) and Trios (peanut butter, chocolate chips and whole grain oats) are both gluten–free.

This year there’s a new option- the Caramel Chocolate Chip cookie features everything in its name — delicious caramel, rich chocolate chips and just a hint of salt to balance the flavors. Oh, and it’s gluten-free, so no one has an excuse not to buy these delicious morsels.

During Girl Scout Cookie season, each G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader) sets out to sell cookies, while also building skills that are imperative for leadership and future success.

Over 1 million Girl Scouts are expected to  participate in this years cookie program, generating nearly $800 million in sales nationwide during the average season.

All of the net revenue raised stays within the regional council area. Participating girls and their troops decide how they would like to invest in community projects, travel, exciting activities, and more.

And As I do each girl scout cookie season I share this story:

I admit I was a girl scout. And for those of you who know me, it will come as no surprise that I was determined to sell more cookies than any of the other girls. I went up and down my street, knocking on doors for orders. I called all my relatives and perfected my telemarketing skills. I asked my dad to get his co-workers to buy from me. And he said NO! But he did offer to take me to work so I could ask for the order. I worked hard and sold hundreds of boxes and was sure I’d win the Cookie title.

Well as it turns out, I didn’t. Some little girl named Susie did. She lived down the street from me and I never saw her ask any of our neighbors to buy cookies. I assked her how she did it and she said it was easy-her mom and dad got all the orders for her. I was mad and didn’t think it was fair and complained to my dad about it. He told me life wasn’t fair, never would be, but that I’d really won, and I’d appreciate it some day when I realized that I had gotten much more out of it than Susie had. Not what a 9 year old girl wants to hear. So I’m sure

I sulked around for a while, until something else captured my attention.

But now many years later, I get it. My dad was right- I had won! I’d learned how to set a goal, prospect customers, perfect my sales pitch, work on my organizational skills, plan the logistics of delivery, handle money, make change and enjoy quite a few cookies, too!
And that’s why I implore you to only buy cookies from Girl Scouts. I know there are many well intentioned parents that want to help their daughters, and help support the troops so they can put on all the programs they have scheduled; but please help them by letting them sell!

And I still pledge to buy cookies from any girl scout who asks.  The Girl Scout Cookie Program®, helps girls learn the essential skills they need to become effective leaders, manage finances, and gain self-sufficiency and confidence in handling money.

Now with the Internet and rise of e-commerce, girls scouts are using the power of technology to expand their sales channels. Last year I got email solicitations, skype sales calls and still ran into a few girl scouts in front of stores.

The Digital Cookie® platform helps girls superpower their cookie sales as they go beyond the booth with mobile and online channels. That’s right. The platform is a fun, educational tool that helps girls run and manage their Girl Scout Cookie business online.

That means more ways for her to learn, and more ways for you to buy and support her success. It also means more opportunities to power new, unique, and amazing experiences that help her learn essential life skills, soar in confidence, discover the leader within, and have a ton of fun!

With the Digital Cookie platform, girls can:

  • Gain new essential business and social skills in a fun and engaging way.
  • Invite cookie customers to easily order and pay for cookies online and through their mobile app.
  • Earn funds to power amazing troop activities for her and her troop!

So, how does the Digital Cookie platform work?
It’s a lot like buying your cookies at a traditional cookie booth, but with an online twist!

numbers

In true Girl Scout style, the girls initiate the cookie sale, whether online, via email, or in person at the cookie booth with their Digital Cookie mobile app.

number1_32

A Girl Scout you know may invite you to visit her personalized cookie website where you can place your order, pay using Visa Checkout or credit cards, have your order shipped or delivered by a Girl Scout,* or even donate cookies to charity.

Some Girl Scouts may take in-person orders using a mobile app that also allows them to securely accept payments using credit cards.

number3_32

Select your cookies, place your order, and complete your transaction. Boom, just like that, you’ve got delicious Girl Scout Cookies coming your way!

In a recent study by the Girl Scouts Heart of the South, they documented skills the Girl Scout Cookie Program teaches, which girls can apply to everyday life:

  • 85% increased their money management skills as they developed budgets, took cookie orders and handled customers’ money.
  • 83% developed business ethics, learning to fulfill promises to customers and considering how best to contribute to their communities with their earnings.
  • 80% set goals and created objectives to reach them.
  • 77% made important decisions, learning to work as a team to develop a business plan, deciding when and where to sell cookies, and determining what to do with the money they earn.
  • 75% developed people skills, learning to talk to, listen to and work with different kinds of people.

Many successful businesswomen and community leaders say they got their start selling Girl Scout Cookies. So when your local Girl Scouts come calling with this year’s best-selling cookies, remember you’re saying hello to tomorrow’s business leaders.

Don’t know a Girl Scout? You can still help girls learn essential skills and do amazing things by buying cookies at your local cookie booth. Enter your zip code in the “Find Cookies!” tool for a list of scheduled cookie booths in your community.

Spaghetti Day Dining Deals Today

January 4, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

The first Western pasta was likely long, thin forms made in Sicily around the 12th century; till this day, spaghetti is the most common round-rod type of pasta and in Italian, “spaghetti” means “little lines.” However, the popularity of pasta only spread across the whole country of Italy after the establishment of pasta factories in the 19th century, substantially shortening the time needed for making dishes like spaghetti and enabling the mass production of pasta for the Italian market.

Food Adventure Recipe- French Onion Soup

January 3, 2019 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

French Onion Soup with Homemade Croutons

A happy new is here, but has old Man Winter got you cold and down?
How about a homemade pick me up that is comfort food in a cup ?
The Food Adventure Crew loves sharing monthly recipes and this January is no exception, as Jackie shares her guarded FRENCH ONION SOUP creation with HOMEMADE CROUTONS. We kick off the new year right with a favorite that most anyone will enjoy, a gourmet soup, with the warmth and comfort of mom’s cooked meals. Speaking of which, Jackie, a mom of two who loves cooking for her family. Heavily influenced by her childhood in upstate New York, her cooking styles specialize in Italian food, to desserts, to healthy choices.
Today we offer to you one of her favorite Holiday/Cold Weather winning recipes. Hopefully this will be one you use as “go to” in the future.  Personalize the recipe and make your own magic.

As Jackie reminds us… “We are the music makers, we are the dreamers of dreams.” – Willy Wonka/Arthur O’Shaughenessy.

Without further delay, let’s cook some soup !

FRENCH ONION SOUP with HOMEMADE CROUTONS – as made by an Italian Food Adventurer:

for the FRENCH ONION SOUP You’ll need:

Ingredients:

  • 1lb bacon (cooked and crumbled)

Jackie Channeling the French Chef for her French Onion Soup

  • 2 tbs bacon fat reserved from the bacon (optional, but delightful!)
  • ¼ c unsalted butter
  • 1 large red onion, sliced thin
  • 1 large yellow onion, sliced thin
  • 1 large white onion, sliced thin
  • 1 bunch scallions, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup dry white wine
  • 10 cups stock (I use vegetable but you can also use chicken or beef)
  • 1/4tsp hot pepper flakes
  • ¼ tsp dry oregano
  • ½ tsp fresh ground black pepper
  • salt – optional. You don’t need much at all with the bacon and stock, so go easy if adding any and remember to taste as you go to avoid over salting!
  • Croutons (homemade recipe to follow!) or a crusty baguette sliced
  • Shredded cheese- mozzarella, Swiss, greyer are all great!

Directions:

  • In a large saucepan, fry bacon. Remove bacon and fat, but reserve 2 tbs of bacon fat. Crumble bacon when cooled.
  • Over medium heat, melt butter then add onions and garlic. Stir frequently to deglaze the lovely bacon bits that are on the bottom of the saucepan!
  • Once onions are soft, add wine and simmer for 10 minutes.
  • Add stock and seasoning and continue to simmer on medium heat for approximately 30 minutes.
  • Serve in deep soup bowls. Top with croutons, cheese and bacon!

HOMEMADE CROUTONS:
(This is a great way to use up any bread that might be going stale- which doesn’t happen often in my carb-loving household!).

You’ll need:
Ingredients:

  • Bread, about 2 cups cut into 1-2 inch pieces
  • Olive oil
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp fresh ground black pepper
  • 1 tsp dried parsley

Directions:
Toss bread with oil and seasonings and spread onto a large baking sheet.  Bake at 300 (do not preheat oven) for about 20 minutes or until dry and crunchy!

There you have it – warmth and happiness in a bowl.  Treat yourself this week and prepare a batch for the whole darn family.  This recipe will cut right through this rainy, cold, wet weather and put you in a place of bliss.

Downtown Developer Commits to Region Through Acquisition

January 3, 2019 By Dayton Most Metro

Philadelphia-based Lindy Communities has completed the acquisition of the high-rise apartment building known as Dayton Towers at 425 Dayton Towers Drive, to be called, The View at Dayton Towers. The 14-story building was constructed in 1963 and sits on 7.5 acres of land just outside of the Oregon District.

“We plan to invest $3 million to update the apartment interiors, amenities, and common areas,” said Alan Lindy, president at Lindy Communities. “The View’s full amenity package includes a fitness center, business center, and activity room. It’s one of the few downtown communities with a swimming pool. These amenities and its desirable location make it one of downtown Dayton’s most prominent high-rise communities.”

Lindy Communities, a fourth-generation family management company, owns 35 multi-family communities totaling more than 6,400 apartments. Lindy’s ownership strategy is to reposition apartment communities and manage for the long term. Lindy family members serve as general partners for all communities, totaling about 1.8 million square feet of residential, office, retail and data center spaces.

Lindy Communities’ local portfolio also includes another downtown Dayton apartment community, St. Clair Lofts, as well as Trailbridge Townhomes in Middletown. By January, Lindy Communities expects to close on JP Flats, a seven-floor high-rise adjacent to Dayton’s new public library, next to health care employer CareSource’s new campus expansion, and a short block from St. Clair Lofts.

Downtown Dayton has had a boom in its residential growth over the past 10 years. Since the launch of the private-public Greater Downtown Dayton Plan strategic initiative in 2010, more than 1,200 new housing units have been completed and are in the pipeline—about a 57 percent increase. Apartment occupancy is one of the highest in the region at 97.5 percent.

The majority of Lindy’s apartment communities are located in the Philadelphia area, which are managed directly. The out-of-state communities owned by Lindy retain local, hands-on management for day-to-day operations and oversight, which Lindy Communities supervises closely. Since 2010, Lindy has partnered with Oberer Management Services to oversee St. Clair Lofts, along with Trailbridge Townhouses. Oberer Management Services will be partnering again with Lindy Communities on The View at Dayton Towers and will market these properties under the Lindy-Oberer name.

The partnership of these two family-owned companies — both demonstrating strong commitments to their regions and a shared confidence in Dayton’s future — is a positive sign of growth and advancement of downtown Dayton and the region.

“We’ve seen for ourselves what Lindy Communities is committed to providing high-quality apartment homes in our market,” said Downtown Dayton Partnership President Sandra Gudorf. “St. Clair Lofts was one of our earlier adaptive re-use success stories, and we look forward to the investments the Lindy family will make in our center city as they add properties to their portfolio.”

The third-generation, family-owned Oberer Companies consists of five divisions, all of which have the resources and capabilities to deliver excellent commercial service, residential construction (including single-family, multi-family homes and apartments), land development, property management, and association management.

Since 1949, Oberer Management Services (a subsidiary of Oberer Companies) has offered a full spectrum of real estate needs, specializing in a comprehensive, professionally managed service solutions. They currently manage more than 50 communities that include apartments, condominiums and homeowners’ associations comprising approximately 5,000 units.

“We’ve been working with Lindy Companies since 2010,” said Lloyd Cobble, vice president of property management at Oberer Management Services. “Like us, Lindy is a family-owned business looking to improve quality of life in the Dayton region through top-rated mixed-use spaces. We’re looking forward to working with them on The View at Dayton Towers.”

Laugh More: A New Year’s Resolution that can make you happier and healthier

January 1, 2019 By Guest Contributor

New Year’s resolutions are supposed to make you a better person, but that’s contingent on following through. Falling short can make you feel worse than you did when the ball dropped. My resolution for 2018 was to stop using social media  (while driving my car) and I still remember the January 2nd red light that broke me. Start 2019 with a resolution that is easy to stick to, will make you healthier and is scientifically proven to make you happier: laugh more.

So much of what we consume leaves us feeling worse. Cable news is an industry that thrives off making people angry and scared, and it’s never been more popular. Social media has permeated the daily fabric of our lives but usually leaves you feeling lonelier. Sure, it’s swell when Facebook connects you with an old classmate, but it’s less fun when it connects your youth soccer coach with your college roommate’s fiancé in an ever-lasting debate about climate change. Instagram is great to look at pictures of your brother’s cool dog, but it becomes miserable when someone else’s meticulously curated feed serves as a drumbeat of your own shortcomings.

We can combat this by laughing more. Walking inspirational posters might tell you laughter is the best medicine, but that’s patently false. No one is fighting a staph infection with Mad-Libs. But laughter is still scientifically proven to make you happier and healthier. The science is out there, if you’re on the fence. Laughter acts as an antidepressant, is central to relationships, forms social bonds contagiously, releases endorphins and fosters connectivity.

And when you laugh, share it with someone. When you laugh with another person, you make a real connection that is becoming more rare by the day at a time when we’ve never needed it more.

As a stand-up comedian, this is the part where I tell you that you can start this Friday and Saturday at Wiley’s Comedy Club in the Oregon District. In a world spent increasingly more behind screens, it’s a special feeling to be in a room full of people, doing something real and sharing a fun night with a group of strangers. But you don’t have to go to a comedy club to make this resolution work, just make it part of your day.

Stop taking yourself so seriously, and brighten someone’s day by sharing an embarrassing story. When you catch yourself spending too much time crafting a selfie, send the awful one to a friend. Take a break during lunch to share your favorite dad joke with a co-worker (what’s red and smells like green paint? Red paint!). Start listening to a comedy podcast while you’re in the car and start watching The Good Place on Netflix.

Looking for the funny is an active choice. There is no shortage of terrible news stories and trends to fill your life with dread. The world is also full of hilarious moments, funny stories and great jokes. You get to choose how you fill your world.

Mark Chalifoux is a stand-up comedian who will be headlining at Wiley’s Comedy Club in the Oregon District on January 4 and 5. He’s been featured on FOX and IFC and on the Bob and Tom radio show. His debut comedy album, “Think Fast”, was released in August and opened at #2 on iTunes. His jokes have been read in Reader’s Digest and heard on SiriusXM.
