Maybe you’re one of the “dreamers and doers,” also known as “Burners,” who’s experienced the art of Burning Man in its original context—out in Black Rock City. That’s the temporary city created every year by those who attend Burning Man in Nevada.

Or maybe you’ve seen photos of the jaw-dropping art, mutant art vehicles, jewelry, and costumes that Burners produce and wish you could encounter them in person.

The Cincinnati Art Museum is bringing you that chance this summer!

No Spectators – The Art of Burning Man, April 26/June 7 – September 2, 2019

This exhibit will open in two stages—Friday, April 26 with additional art added on June 7. In the spirit of the community of Burning Man, the entire exhibit will be free to attend.

No Spectators is a traveling exhibit that debuted at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C. and will arrive at its final stop this October in Oakland, CA, near the place where Burning Man originated, closing in February, 2020.

According to Burning Man Project’s Director of Art & Civic Engagement, Kim Cook, “We know that not everyone will be able to participate in the community of Black Rock City, and it is our hope that the museum experience opens doors to new questions about how we all have the ability to express ourselves creatively in the places we call home.”

The Cincinnati Art Museum’s Cameron Kitchin—the Louis and Louise Dieterle Nippert Director of the Cincinnati Art Museum—called Burning Man “one of the most influential movements in contemporary American Art and culture.”

Don’t miss your chance to experience this amazing, inspiring, and interactive event! Yes, we said interactive–much of the artwork is based on your participation. One of the pads of Shrumen Lumen causes the mushroom to move when you step on it. There are shows to watch and peepholes to find. Plus, the art will be scattered throughout the museum. You’ll have to go on something of an art scavenger hunt to find it all!

2019 Dayton Region’s Walk of Fame Inductees Announced

Three individuals and one performing arts organization will join the Dayton Region’s Walk of Fame at the 2019 induction ceremony in September, Wright Dunbar, Inc. officials announced Wednesday, April 24.

They are Jessie Gooding, John Gower, Betsy and Lee Whitney and the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company.

“We have another year of outstanding inductees. They are all excellent examples of the exceptional people who make this area a great place to live and raise a family,” said Harry Seifert, president and CEO of Wright Dunbar, Inc.

This year’s inductees will be honored at a luncheon at Sinclair College on Thursday, Sept. 26th. Tickets and sponsorships for this event are available online.

Jessie Gooding (1926-)

One of the Dayton region’s foremost civil rights leaders, Jessie Gooding was born and raised in Minden, La. After serving in the segregated U. S. Army, he studied at Wilberforce University and became a chemist at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Witnessing—and experiencing—discrimination in the workplace, Gooding established equal employment opportunity and sensitivity training, which became mandatory in the Air Force in the 1960s. He also advocated for the Air Force to recruit top science and engineering students from historically black colleges and universities. Gooding is the longest serving president of the Dayton chapter of the NAACP (1982-2002.) Under his leadership the Dayton NAACP increased voter registration and pressed for reforms to end discrimination in education, employment, housing and law enforcement. He is co-author with Rosalind Vera Osinubi of Freedom and Justice for All: My Life and Dayton Civil Rights History.

John Gower (1953-)

John Gower is a life-long Dayton resident who has devoted his career as an urban planner to preserving Dayton’s history and making it a more enjoyable place to live. His advocacy for Dayton began as a student at the University of Cincinnati’s School of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning, when he volunteered weekends in Dayton to board up abandoned homes in his Dayton View neighborhood. He has worked as Dayton’s downtown planner, director of community development, urban design coordinator, and most recently as reimaging strategist. The Living City Project he led has been called a catalyst for revitalizing downtown housing. He led architectural preservation efforts that resulted in the city’s Historic District Zoning and Landmarks Commission. His preservation advocacy continues even in retirement, and he has been a leading advocate for restoring the downtown Dayton Arcade.

Betsy and Lee Whitney (1930-, 1930-2018)

Betsy and Lee Whitney have been exemplary leaders in arts, social services, history and business organizations. Born in Yellow Springs, Betsy Baldwin met Leon “Lee” Whitney in college at Ohio Wesleyan. They married in 1953. Lee joined his father-in-law’s insurance company, which grew to become Baldwin and Whitney with Lee Whitney as president. The Whitneys have been generous with their talents and resources. A past president and board chair of the YWCA, Betsy served on boards and/or fundraising committees for the Dayton Art Institute, Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, Dayton Visual Arts Center, Human Race Theater Company, Victoria Theatre Association, Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce, Dayton History, Leadership Dayton, Dayton Foundation and Wright-Dunbar Inc. Lee served as president of Dayton Children’s, Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, Downtown Dayton Partnership and the YMCA, and as a board member of the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance, United Theological Seminary, and Westminster Church. Through his countless volunteer hours at Carillon Historical Park. He saw the need for a picnic shelter for schoolchildren. The Whitney Pavilion there now proudly serves visitors of all ages. Both Whitneys served on additional nonprofit boards and committees too numerous to list here.

Dayton Contemporary Dance Company

Nationally and internationally acclaimed local group on the dance stage and in film, DCDC has been a recognized cultural amenity in the Dayton arts scene for over 50 years. Few individuals or arts organizations in the region have represented Dayton on a larger scale. DCDC represents the Dayton region around the world. In this decade it has toured in Chili, China, Russia and Kazakhstan. PBS featured DCDC in the 2007 documentary “Dance in America: Dancing in the Light.” The film documentary “Sparkle,” which featured DCDC dancer Sheri “Sparkle Williams,” was selected to screen at Silverdocs, America’s largest and most prestigious documentary film festival in 2012. DCDC won the prestigious 2016 “Bessie” Award for Outstanding Revival for its performance of “Rainbow ‘Round my Shoulder” at the David H. Koch Theater in New York. DCDC was founded by Jeraldyne Blunden (1940-1999,) who was inducted in the Walk of Fame as an individual in 1999.

Since its inception in 1996 as a part of the City of Dayton’s bicentennial celebration, the Dayton Region’s Walk of Fame has recognized individuals and groups for their outstanding and enduring personal or professional contributions to the community, nation and the world. The Walk of Fame honors them by setting memorial stones in the sidewalks of Dayton’s historic Wright-Dunbar District. The stones can be enjoyed year-round on West Third Street between Broadway and Shannon and on North and South Williams Streets.

Wright Dunbar, Inc. a private non-profit organization, serves as a catalyst for economic development on West Third Street and manages the Walk of Fame as part of its mission in Dayton’s historic West Third Street Corridor in the neighborhood of Wilbur and Orville Wright and Paul Laurence Dunbar.

High energy bluegrass is on the bill at The Brightside

Chain Station is in town from Denver on Wed April 24th, performing their high energy string music at The Brightside in downtown Dayton.

There is a strong tradition of bluegrass and traditional mountain music in the Dayton area. That tradition is celebrated this week with two talented and high energy string bands: Chain Station, from Denver, Colorado, and Red Sun Pasta, which features members of Yellow Spring’s own Blue Moon Soup. If you’re a bluegrass, mountain or Americana music fan – don’t miss this special performance at Dayton’s newest music venue, The Brightside, on Wednesday April 24th from 8-11pm.

Chain Station is a 4-piece, get ‘em out on the dance floor string band, known for winning over crowds with creative, fun original songs. Their music is well-steeped in Americana roots, with vocal harmonies that are high, lonesome, and tight. They are a bluegrass band that would satisfy a picky old-timer and delight fans of newgrass, a delicate balance indeed.

The band is on the road promoting their highly anticipated new album “Backroads” which will be released May 3, 2019. You may have seen them on the road supporting acts such as The Del McCoury Band, The Devil Makes Three, Todd Snider, Sierra Hull, Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen, Fruition, Trout Steak Revival, The Railsplitters, Lil’ Smokies, Hot Buttered Rum, and many more

They are supported locally by members of Blue Moon Soup, who are performing as a smaller group under the moniker Red Sun Pasta. These talented local musicians are known for their eclectic mix of jam band staples, folk and bluegrass traditionals. On stage, trail-side or fireside, the music brings a sincerity and spirit to the stage that sweeps wallflowers onto the dance floor. After a Blue Moon Soup show, they hope your feet are tired and your ears yearn for more!

On Friday, April 26 at 7:15, McKinley United Methodist Church & Mound Street Academy has rented out our space for a special benefit screening of AMAZING GRACE. BATHTUBS OVER BROADWAY, a special little gem of a documentary, is coming to town for two screenings – Saturday, May 18 at Noon and Sunday, May 19 at 3:00. This doc has been screening at festivals and winning awards, and it is currently rated “100% Fresh” on Rottentomatoes! “When he started as a comedy writer for the LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN, Steve Young had few interests outside of his day job. But while gathering material for a segment on the show, Steve stumbled onto a few vintage record albums that would change his life forever. VTA presents Sebastian Maniscalco’s You Bother Me tour

Fresh off a wildly successful, two-year-plus run on his Stay Hungry Tour, Billboard’s inaugural Comedian of the Year Sebastian Maniscalco is back with the You Bother Me tour, which is currently set to visit 12 cities in the U.S. and Canada throughout its fall run. Touted as ‘the comedian’s comedian” by People, Maniscalco finds himself “at the vanguard of a live comedy revolution” according to Pollstar. And the man “NBC Nightly News” called “comedy’s new superstar” is showing no signs of stopping.

“With God’s Grace” Mobile Food Pantry Feeds 125,000 Daytonians

Dayton’s mobile food pantry called “With God’s Grace” is gearing up for the summer, helping Dayton’s less fortunate feed their families. They continue to literally serve millions of meals a year, making a huge difference in community.

HERE’S THE SKINNY on “WITH GOD’S GRACE MOBILE FOOD PANTRY:

—Nicole Adkins started the food pantry out of her own home in December, 2015, helping 100 families on Christmas 2015.

— Nicole and her husband have 6 kids, who have all volunteered at one time. Three of which continue involvement. Her husband pickups the donations and drives the truck to mobile locations.

—“With God’s Grace” has increased their reach in the Dayton area, growing each year. In 2018, they helped 42,635 families, which was 124,940 people. They handed out over 2.7 million pounds of food which was nearly 1.2 million meals.

—They never thought the mobile food truck would do this much business, and they never expected so many needy people.

Non perishable items donated

—On a typical Wednesday in Springfield they feed 800 to 900 families. For example, last Monday night on Xenia Ave they advertised a stop and 125 families showed up and were given groceries. Last Saturday in Huber Heights (the day before Easter) they fed 185 families.

— They have 4 volunteers that come everyday and help at the warehouse, and up to 50 volunteers can help out at a mobile site. If you would like to volunteer email Nicole at [email protected] or show up an hour before at any mobile location.

WHERE IS THIS FOOD COMING FROM?

—They get food from the Dayton Food Bank, some food has no costs, and some food costs 18 cents per pound.

—Dorothy Lane market donates food from the Oakwood and Centerville store 7 days a week.

Another Mobile setup to help the hungry

—Three different Krogers donate as well – The stores on Needmore Rd, The Vandalia Kroger and the Beavercreek Kroger.

—Out of state truck drivers have agreements that when stores reject food deliveries, they call “With God’s Grace” to donate the items.

—They get skids of food in from out of county private donors that choose to remain nameless.

WHAT DO THE FAMILIES RECEIVE?

—“With God’s Grace” gives out are large variety of non perishable food items. They pass out health and beauty items, dairy and refrigerator items, meats, and a wide selection of produce. They also give out bakery and bread items.

Donations ready for the families

— The typical family helped seems to be the working poor. Those who just cant make ends meet with their job temporarily, or those whose head of household just lost their job. When businesses close or when jobs leave Dayton, they see an uptick in those getting help. When Sears, Toys R Us, Elder Beerman, Payless Shoes, and Plow and Hearth, Rodgers Jewelers closed, it left a lot hungry families. Even with the good economic news across the USA, some Daytonians are dealing with layoffs and closings.

HOW DOES A FAMILY GET HELP?

— To receive benefits from “With God’s Grace” Mobile Food Pantry, mobile stops are listed on t heir facebook page, and on the website www.withgodsgracepantry.org, and they can also sign up for a mass text list.

— THURS APRIL 26th – 6pm -730pm at 1120 S. Detroit Street in Xenia, Ohio

— WED MAY 1st, at 622 Springfield St. in Dayton Ohio – 2 stops: 1030am-1pm and 4pm – 8pm

— MON MAY 6th in Brookville, Ohio at 1488 Johnsville-Brookville Rd. from 6pm-730 pm

— WED MAY 8th from 10:30am -1pm at 622 Springfield St. in Dayton and fro 4pm -8pm same location.

— SAT MAY 11th at 101 Drexel Ave. in Dayton from 1pm -230pm.

— Families can visit more than one stop, or as many as needed. The food pantry asks that you show ID and that you bring something to carry the food home with. Families get a lot of food , so something with wheels is preferable.

— “With Gods Grace” Mobile Food Pantry feeds any and all families who need food, that’s the only threshhold.

GRAMMY® Award-winning ‘80s pop icon Rick Springfield will hit the road in 2019 for the Best In Show Summer Tour. Featuring support by very special guests Eddie Money and Greg Kihn, the tour will include a stop in Huber Heights, OH at Rose Music Center on Saturday, September 7th.

ABOUT RICK SPRINGFIELD

Over the past four decades, Rick Springfield has worn many hats as an entertainer and performer. Artist of the Week: Brian Mathus

“I have been drawing as long as I can remember” Brian told me. “Then at age 16 I started to paint. I remember that one of my earliest painting projects caused some problems. I did a large painting on the wall of our family’s apartment and then had to raise $500 to return the wall to its original condition.”

“When I lived in Oregon I got some excellent art training. I eventually joined with several friends who were painters and we started our own gallery. It gradually grew to be successful. We even had some shows in Los Angeles and in China.”

“In 2008, when the economy tanked, our gallery went out of business. I went into the National Guard then and was posted several different places. I fell away from painting and didn’t think I would ever be an artist again”

“After my wife (also a painter) and I moved to Dayton we spent some time getting jobs and working on our home in Dayton’s Five Oaks neighborhood. Then one day we visited some studios at The Front Street Building Co. and it made us remember how much we had enjoyed painting. We rented a studio at Front Street and later moved to our current studio at 901 North Keowee. We are here painting most weekends, and we’re always open on First Fridays.”

Chelsea Clinton Signs Latest Book at Cincinnati Zoo

Chelsea Clinton will be signing copies of her new book—Don’t Let Them Disappear—at the Zoo on April 25th from 5-7pm!

In her new book, Chelsea introduces young readers to a selection of endangered animals, sharing what makes them special, and also what threatens them. Taking readers through the course of a day, Don’t Let Them Disappear talks about rhinos, tigers, whales, pandas and more, and provides helpful tips on what we all can do to help prevent these animals from disappearing from our world entirely.

Get cultured at Fine Art Final Fridays at new downtown gallery

We hear a lot about First Fridays downtown, but less so about Final Fridays. Edward Dixon who owns a new independent gallery downtown is celebrating Fine Art Final Fridays and I am here for it!

The Edward A. Dixon Gallery is a hidden gem on Ludlow, just show of 3rd St and Courthouse Square. On Final Fridays you’ll find lots of local and international art for your viewing pleasure, along with light appetizers and beverages and live music. Bringing music and visual art together, is absolutely one of my favorite things!

Senior Art Majors from Central State University will also be at the gallery with Professor Erin Smith-Glenn. Students will be gaining experience at a commercial art gallery, interacting with the public as emerging artists and being interviewed by the gallery owner.

Artwork from several local and international artists will be on display and available for purchase. The special exhibit this month features glass mosaic art from Philip Payne and abstract photography from Bill Franz. Entertainment provided by pianist & keyboardist, Denzel Hollis.

Also, look for other great events on Ludlow Street during Final Friday including Something’s Afoot at The Arts Collaboratory (2nd & Ludlow), Latin Dance at Hannah’s and music and spirits at Third Perk Coffee House.

LLLLLets get ready for chomppinnnnnggg~ ! Spectators needed, and its all for charity.

Local Celebs will be tackling this 16 inch sub for charity

The Submarine House in co-ordination with Food Adventures Dayton is hosting an event on Saturday April 27th at 3pm. Local celebs from all walks of life will be chewing for charity as they take the Super Duper Cheesesteak Challenge. This is just a qualifier event to see if any of the local celebs can qualify for the store championship.

Money raised will benefit the Pink Ribbon Girls, from entry fees to a portion of all drinks and food bought during the event as well as straight up donations and a 50/50 raffle.

Dayton Most Metro and Dayton Dining are also partnering, and have EXCLUSIVE SCOOP on this extravaganza at the Centerville Submarine House at 503 Miamisburg Centerville Rd.

Used to keeping law and order, can one of Kettering’s finest “cuff” and tame the 16 inch Super Duper Cheesesteak? Remember that means triple the cheese and triple the meat! Can this Paisan meet the challenge? Pride is on the line!

2) THE REAL SANTA – MARK “THE BEARD” DAGROSSA:
The one and only real Santa in town, Mark is also a fixture at the Sons of Italy, and Italian Fall Festa handling cannoli. He looks to handle the Super Duper Cheesesteak in under 16 minutes. Also known for his work on the Gem City Podcast, Mark “The Beard” DaGrossa will be looking to beat the bun this year! We are grateful for his participation.

3) SENIOR CENTERVILLE FOOTBALL PLAYER, DECLAN “THE HUNGRY ELK” MASON:
Used to tackling dummies, can this player tackle a Super Duper Cheesesteak ? Can this 18 year old stud intercept the 16 inches of heaven and beat the challenge? The entire team should be there to support this Hungry Elk as we hand off of a sandwich with the works and triple the meat and cheese.

4) SONS OF ITALY “GARLIC CHAMP,” KEVIN SORICE:

The Garlic Champ

Used to eating garlic, organizing bocce ball and running the beer trucks at the Sons of Italy Fall Festa, Kevin is no stranger to the challenge. He looks to improve his time in the “Senior division” of the competition. A former college football player, he looks to size up the 16 inch sub. Bad news for Kevin, there is no garlic on this cheesesteak.

Local sports guru Scott Halasz steps up to the challenge for charity and faces his first Super Duper Cheesesteak. Can this journalist make headlines by beating the 16 inches with the works? Look for him to have a secret strategy that may push him past the time limit with ease! We wish him luck and are excited to have him for this event.

6) GEM CITY ROLLER ATHLETE “ARCHANGEL ANARCHY”:
We expect elbows to be flying as this Gem City Roller Derby star attacks a Super Duper Cheesesteak. The only question is will she be wearing roller skates during the challenge? She has 16 minutes to beat the challege and the sandwich with the works. Used to speed and tough checks, this challenge is custom made for a hungry roller girl who is used to sandwiching her

7) FORMER SUPER DUPER CHEESESTEAK CHAMP, STEVE HOWARD:
We have a ringer. Stepping out of retirement, former 2012 Super Duper Cheesesteak champ Steve Howard is hungry for more. Does he still have what is takes to beat the challenge and get on the leaderboard for the store? We look for a good time and he is the man to beat. Watching this guy mow through a 16 inch cheesesteak is worth the price of admission alone.

8) GEM CITY PODCAST STAR, TERRY “IZZY ROCK” MARTIN:
The man behind the Gem City Podcasts steps into the Cheesesteak arena to help the Pink Ribbon Girls. Trading in his microphones and headset for a 16 inch sub with the works, can he beat the challenge? Or will the Super Duper sub make Izzy, too dizzy? We have a feeling he may we the wildcard in this competition and could come in with an impressive time. Come watch for yourself and see if Terry can do it !

9) DAYTON CHROME DIVA BIKERS CLUB REPRESENTATIVE “GOOD GUY” CHRIS GOODE:
Loud motorcycles and long highways are a way of life, but can this open road friend of the Divas beat the open faced Super Duper Cheesesteak? Watch as this Chris steps up to the table for charity again. Gripping the sub like handlebars, we expect him to put the pedal to the metal and put a hurting on this sub. This will be his 2nd time at the competition and his first time he nearly came in first place. If he comes in hungry, look or him to be a dangerous competitor.

10) NICK TARKANY SR. OWNER and BREWER at HEAVIER THAN AIR BREWING CO.:
Nick is a big time aviation buff and expects to fly high in the cheesesteak challenge. Will he be able to land this sub with triple the meat, triple the cheese and the “Works” toppings which include mushrooms, onions, mayo, lettuce, tomato and hot relish? We are grateful to have this local brewery owner and brewmaster, who makes incredible beer, as part of the fun.

We will see if the transition from beer to cheesesteaks is a natural one as Warped Wing’s distribution king, puts his crown on the line. Can Dustin beat the clock and make Ermal proud, or will the sub feel like ten tons of stout? We are very excited to have him in the competition and look for him to possibly be a dark horse in the race. Will he be able to can the competition? Come watch and help us raise money for Pink Ribbon Girls.

12) RYAN ROTH, LOCAL ELVIS TRIBUTE ARTIST and VOTED DAYTON’s #1 MALE VOCALIST:
It’s one for the money, two for the show, 3 to ready now go Ryan go ! We ready for him to rock this event ! Will he be able to beat the King of cheesesteak challenges? Ryan is a great sport, and we are thankful he is taking time to be in this charity fundraiser. Food Adventures blog, Submarine House and the Pink Ribbon Girls say …. “AAahh thank you very muuucch.”
