ARTIST OF THE WEEK:  Walter Murch

April 17, 2019 By Bill Franz

ARTIST OF THE WEEK Walter Murch next to a self portrait and a Winnie the Pooh soap bar at his exhibition at K12 Gallery and TEJAS (314 S. Jefferson).

For 36 years Murch was Director of Product Design at Hewitt Soap (333 Linden) in Dayton’s Historic Inner East neighborhood. That plant was the country’s largest manufacturer of specialty soap bars, and Murch designed over 2,000 different soaps.

The exhibition includes examples of soap bars made for such diverse customers as Avon, Disney and the Sultan of Brunei. For each product Murch would do design sketches and then carve one bar by hand. His carving was used to make molds that made thousands of soap bars.

Murch has retired from soap carving but he is still a working artist, and some of his abstract paintings are part of his exhibition at K12. These paintings show some of the same skill and precision evident in the carvings. Interestingly, the soaps and the abstract paintings also share similar color palettes.

The exhibition continues through April 27. It’s well worth a visit to see the art and to learn a bit of Dayton history.

Cult Classic: Joe’s Pizzeria

April 16, 2019 By Dayton937 2 Comments

Outside the legend

Dayton has an underground pizza following.  Many of them are older generations and not internet savvy.  Many of them are young and just hitting their pizza groove.  They have one thing in common, they love Food Adventures to Joe’s Pizzeria on Airway Rd.  This is the 60th year in business for Joe’s.  It is a pizza place that has quietly become a fan favorite in the Miami Valley.  In a city that invented thin crust pizza establishments, this restaurant has held its own… and then some.

THE SECRET TO JOE’s SUCCESS:

The answer is pepperoni.  Yes. pepperoni is the

Joe’s Pepperoni Pizza

secret to Joe’s Pizzeria’s success.  Their pizza uniquely has these small pepperonis that crisp up around the edges and rise during cooking.  As the pepperonis curl up, the edges get crispy and pepperonis form little bowls.  Inside these bowls is the self contained, tasty grease from each pepperoni.  You essentially have tiny bowls of flavor all over your pizza.  That is their trademark.  It is also what typically brings people in from all over town. No other pizza place does it quite the same, the pepperoni and cooking technique makes the taste and product unique.

HERE’s THE SKINNY on JOE’s PIZZERIA:

Pepperoni, Mushroom, Onion, Green Peppers

— Joe’s Pizzeria has been family owned since 1959, only changing ownership once.

— Located at 4313 Airway Rd,  the small parking lot and modest dining area, may cause you to deal with a crowded atmosphere.

— Hours are
Monday-Friday, 10am – 10pm.
Friday and Saturday, 10am – 11pm
Sunday, noon – 10pm

— When you first walk in – you place your order, then pay and sit down and wait for them to call your name when your order is ready.  Listen carefully, because at this fast paced place they announce the names quicker that an auctioneer at an estate sale.

The little bowls of grease

— The dining room is also late 70’s early 80’s decor.  Eating there feels like a delicious time warp.

— The beverage situation is unique.  They tend to push 2 liters of pop on groups, since it is the best deal.  Your choice of drinks are 2 liters, and 20 ounce bottles.  You can also buy a small or large fountain pop, but you get NO REFILLS.

OK so it is no secret that the pizza is the main event at  Joe’s.
After having dozens of pizza topping combinations and trying everything on the menu, The Food Adventure Crew have come up with our list of “MUST EATS…”

MUST EATS at JOE’s PIZZERIA:

Steak Sub

— THE PEPPERONI PIZZA:
Whether it is a small, large or jumbo sized pie, you can’t go wrong with the classic pizza choice at Joe’s.  We don’t suggest asking for extra sauce, because it might mess with the dynamic of the pepperoni grease bowls.  The pizza is a thin crust and typically crispy. They cut their pizzas into the familiar Dayton Squares cut.  It comes out piping hot, and guaranteed to burn a mouth or two.

— PIZZA WITH PEPPERONI, ONION, MUSHROOMS and GREEN PEPPERS:
Get the pepperoni of course, and add onion, mushroom and green peppers to round out a terrific pizza.  This will become a favorite in your household.  Don’t like an item or missing a topping you love?  The secret is to get your version of a deluxe and make sure you include pepperoni.

Dine in ?

— THE STEAK SUB:
The only item that was outstanding enough besides pizza to make the “must eats” is the steak sub.  It is a hoagie beef patty on a sub bun, topped with spaghetti sauce, mushrooms, cheese, onions and banana peppers.  It tastes great and one reason is the bun is so soft.  The mix of the hoagie patty and the toppings makes it an instant classic.

Joe’s Pizzeria of Dayton definitely has a strong

loaded pizza

following.  You see dozens of customers stroll in hour after hour, either leaving with pizzas or sitting down in the dining room.  They get busy during peak hours and do a hell of a “to go” business.  The square-cut cult classic pie with pepperoni has become a Dayton Icon.  The term is so overused but this place definitely earns its spot as gem of Dayton.

If you have been to Joe’s Pizzeria, then you know what the addicting pizza tastes like.  If you have not been there yet, it is time to drive over to Airway Road and experience the little pepperoni grease bowls for yourself.

This is the music and dance party you need in your life!

April 16, 2019 By LIbby Ballengee

April is a magical month because it finally feels like spring. After the long cold and grey winter months, those first weekends in April when you don’t have to wear a coat or scrape your windshield, feels like freedom. When that happens, it’s time to shake off cabin fever, push the cobwebs off those dancing shoes, and have some fun! You can do that in spades at this weekend’s This Must Be The Party concert extravaganza!

This Must Be The Party is the namesake of a local all-star tribute band that performs a complete recreation of the innovative album and documentary “Stop Making Sense” by the Talking Heads. This act blasted onto the Dayton scene in 2017 with a much talked about performance. Local music legend Sharon Lane wrote “It was beyond crazy good, it was an amazing show. Everyone was incredible. I will say this… Dayton has some unbelievable musicians. What a great time. If you missed it… don’t miss the next one!” Well it’s been a 2 year wait for the “next one” – and it’s finally here this weekend!

Making this show even more special is the addition of the all original afro-funk-jazz band Ernie Johnson from Detroit. This 9-piece band that is actually from Cincinnati will blow your socks off – literally! With a powerful horn section and infectious grooves, you won’t be able to resist the dance floor! (My advice, wear comfortable shoes).

All of this musical goodness is happening at the brand new Brightside Music & Event Center in downtown Dayton at the corner of 3rd and Keowee. This very cool new space is the new go-to spot for both listening room show and epic dance parties such as this.

How to Go?

Friday April 19, 2019 at Brightside Music & Event Center (905 E 3rd St Dayton OH)

WADE IN: A Call to Action on Climate Justice

April 16, 2019 By Dayton Most Metro

On Earth Day, Monday April 22 at 7pm, the World House Choir will perform a concert at the Foundry Theater in Yellow Springs with songs that call us to action on climate justice and celebrate the importance and significance of water in our lives. The concert’s title is taken from the African-American spiritual “Wade in the Water.”

The choral works on the program will be stitched together by the gifted local storyteller, Omope Carter Daboiku.

Songs will include Moses Hogan’s powerful arrangement of “Wade in the Water,” “Yemaya,” a sacred chant from the Santaria religion of Cuba calling to the feminine Orisha who lives in the oceans and represents the forces of creation, the well-known upbeat spiritual, “Down By the Riverside,” and Margaret Bond’s lush setting of the Langston Hughes poem, “The Negro Speaks of Rivers.”

The concert will also feature our premiere performance of a newly commissioned arrangement of the inspiring song by the Thrive Choir from Oakland, California, “We Shall Be Known.”

A distinct treat will be our guest artist, Nigerian drummer Baoku Moses, who will accompany two pieces on the program as well as lead the World House Choir and a percussion ensemble in his original composition, Wa Ka Lo [Let’s Celebrate].

Mark your calendar for this special event. Admission is free, donations are welcome.

Burrito’s, Taco’s and Tito’s on Tap at the Newest Hot Head Burrito’s

April 14, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

The Hot Head Mexican Grill &  Cantina in Centerville opens on Monday with the first 250 burrito’s free starting at 4pm.  And if you can’t make that, they’ll give away another 250 on Tuesday morning starting at 10:30am.

According to owner Ray Wiley the first location opened in 2007 and  this will be the 76th Hot Head to open.  While the majority of their eateries are in Ohio, through franchising,  they’ve managed to locate in nine states with their newest restaurants opening soon in Massachusetts, Texas and Alabama. They’ve opened their first head inside a Kroger grocery store with 4 more to come and a few more free standing locations are currently under construction.

As you move down the line you can create your own burrito, bowl or taco, making it mild with teriyaki chicken, pork verde or classic chicken or go wild with jalapeno ranch spicy steak, spicy chicken or mango habanero barbacoa. Continue to add rice,  beans, banana peppers, onions, peppers, lettuce salsa, guacamole, queso or cheese.

But there’s still more as you choose from one of their 14 sauces including honey chipotle BBQ, Cholula Hot Sauce, Mango Habanero, Smoky Tabasco or Southwest Ranch, just to name a few. Also new on the menu are appetizers- burrito bites, jalapeno poppers and nachos.

Once you’ve created your entree,  you’ll have the option to open a bar tab (with proper ID) and get an electronic  bracelet that will allow activate a tap allowing you to pour your own beer, margarita or Long Island Ice Tea.  Using the Ipourit.com system, customers have complete control of the adult beverage service and you pour your own selection and are charged by the ounce for  what you pour.

Your black bracelet activates the tap and you can pour as little or as much as you’d like (up to 32oz per visit).  Grab a flight tray and create your own beer or margarita flight.  Go back for a second round and your bracelet will just add your selections to your tab.

There are over 20 taps to choose from and the beer selection includes the standard domestic beers, craft beer selections from Warped Wing, Yellow Springs Brewery, Jackie O’s and more. Want to know more about the specialty beers?  Tap the sign and you’ll get a description like the one to the left here.  Each time you use your wristband to activate a tap, you’ll see exactly how many ounces you are pouring as well as the total that you’ve poured.

Prefer hard liquor?  That’s on tap as well.  Choose from Patron or Sauza Tequila, Tito’s Vodka, Bacardi Rum or Crown Royal.  You can pour up to 6 ounces of the hard stuff and then use the Pepsi Spire machine if you need a mixer.

On opening night from 4 to 9 pm all beverages from the self-pouring tap handles will be 50% off.

Recipe of the Month: Spaghetti & Breadcrumbs

April 14, 2019 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Time for an Italian tradition

Welcome to our Food Adventure recipe of the month.  This month we feature a secret, closely guarded family recipe that is dear to our hearts.

Jackie Scanlan from our Food Adventure Crew is an Italian mom.  Today she shares not only an Italian Family secret, but a favorite you would typically find in New York and Jersey in Italian households.

Today’s recipe feature : SPAGHETTI with BREAD CRUMBS

Jackie aka “Hungry Jax” explains the origins and importance of this dish in her life.

Hello fellow Dayton area foodies !!

Spaghetti with Breadcrumbs

It’s finally warm out! Don’t get me wrong, I am a winter child. I love snow, hoodies and warm boots. But when the sun starts shining, and the weather warms up, I can’t help but feel more energized and ready to be outside with the kids anytime that we can! And with the change in the season, my appetite changes as well!

Pasta is truly my soul food. If I was only allowed to eat one thing for the rest of my life, spaghetti would be the choice. It is so versatile and fun to eat! The recipe I am sharing today is a lightened up spaghetti dish that is fresh and lighter for these warmer days but still fulfills as a comfort food.

Spaghetti with breadcrumbs was a go-to easy dish that my mother would make when I was a child. I loved it. Quick, simple, and satisfying! My version is pretty close to my mothers, but a few tweaks that enhance this dish to the next level.  This dish makes a

It all starts with GARLIC !

great main dish or can be a light side. Grill up some chicken and you’ve got a complete meal.  I added broccoli to brighten it up even more. My trick is to toss the broccoli florets in with the pasta during the last minute to cook them. This produces a crisp and brilliant colored broccoli without it being mushy. And it makes for one less pan to clean!

Give it a shot! It’s so easy and very tasty! Not that I am biased or anything…

Mangia!

SPAGHETTI WITH BREADCRUMBS

You’ll need:

  • ¼ cup olive oil

    Monthly Recipe

  • 1 cup panko bread crumbs
  • 1 tbls dried parsley
  • 1 tbls crushed red pepper
  • 1 clove garlic chopped
  • 1 lb spaghetti
  • 2 cups broccoli chopped
  • ¼ cup fresh lemon juice
  • zest from one lemon
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • **reserve ½ cup pasta water**
  • Breath mints/gum for after if you’re on a date. This is a garlicky one!

Warning – this recipe makes kids happy

DIRECTIONS:

Boil water and cook pasta as instructed. Meanwhile, in a separate pan, heat the olive oil and red crushed pepper till warm on medium heat. Add garlic and cook until fragrant (about 1 minute).  Add in bread crumbs and cook until lightly browned. Remove from heat and add parsley.

During the last minute of your pasta cooking, add in broccoli. Once done, drain but reserve ½ cup pasta water. Return pasta and broccoli to the pot. Add ¼ cup of  the reserved water and cook on low heat. Add lemon juice and salt and pepper to taste. Pasta should be moist but not swimming in pasta water. So only add more if you feel it’s too dry.

Remove from heat, dish out and top with the breadcrumbs and romano and/or parmesan cheese.  Mangia!

However, different proved to be good and she fell in love with not only this “gem” of a city, but also the food and foodies within it. Cooking is a passion of Jackie’s.

Cook breadcrumbs until lightly browned

She loves to use her husband John, and 2 daughters Coraline and Ashlyn as her lab rats to test recipes out. Some of her recipes have been published in National Food Magazines! She has also won food competitions including best “Chicken Riggies.”

As much as she loves to cook, she loves to take a night off from her kitchen and enjoy eating out and letting someone else do all the work (and the cleanup)! She hosts cooking demos at Dayton’s Garlic Fest and has appeared for Food Adventures on Living Dayton TV.  Jackie is always excited to be a part of the Food Adventure team and this “always hungry girl” is looking forward to experiencing some new eats.  Her positive attitude and passion for food ads fun to all of our events.

New Patio and New Menu at Salar

April 12, 2019 By Dayton Most Metro

Now that it’s patio season in Dayton, one of the Oregon District restaurants  has just given their back patio a major makeover.  Salar Restaurant and Lounge is opening their newly renovated back patio on Saturday, April 13 along with the release of their new food and wine menus just in time for Spring.  Salar’s new back patio joins their covered front patio, which faces Fifth Street in the Oregon District.  Both patios will allow more than 50 seats for outdoor enjoyment.

Salar owner and executive chef Margot Blondet has spent months designing and working to complete the back patio and is excited to release the new menus along with the outdoor space.

“The winter months gave us the time to work on recreating the outdoor space and I can’t wait to share it with the Dayton community,” says Blondet. “I brought a number of fresh, seasonal ingredients to the menu as well and I wanted the new space to reflect that.”

Elements of the renovation feature a custom pergola, curtains, bohemian rugs, string lights, all new furniture and even miniature herb gardens.

Salar, located at 400 E. Fifth St. in Dayton, Ohio, reopened to the public on Oct. 1, just shy of a year after a devastating fire forced the local restaurant to shutter temporarily to rebuild.
