Dayton At Work And Play: Larry Watts

May 2, 2019 By Bill Franz

I caught up with Larry Watts as he was working in the garden at House of Bread (9 Orth Avenue) in Dayton’s Old Dayton View neighborhood. Larry is the founder of Seeds of Peace Dayton Ohio-New Page.
Seeds of Peace gives children, primarily those from the Five Oaks neighborhood, the type of experiences most children take for granted. Watts and a handful of volunteers drive kids to the swimming pool, a karate class, a fishing lake or an arts program.

“Today we’re all getting lunch at the House of Bread” he explained “and then we’ll work in the garden plots that we maintain here. Next time we’ll do something fun, just to balance things out.”

Watts started Seeds of Peace ten years ago. “2009 was a bad time in our neighborhood” he said. “There was a string of shootings on the West side and I felt guilty. I felt that I wasn’t doing what I could to make things better.”

Watts told me he’s taken kids on more than 1,000 outings over the last ten years. He relies on donations from churches and some individuals to cover gas and admission costs. If you’d like to help, email him at [email protected]

Vote for Best Hair & Makeup From The CLASH Fashion Show

May 1, 2019 By Dayton Most Metro

On Saturday, April 27th, from 6-9p, Masque hosted  the 8th Annual Spring/Summer Clash Fashion Show. This unique event pairs local clothing designers with models, hair and makeup stylists to create a magical evening for the fashionista in all of us! In addition to local designers, Oregon District shops, Clash and Feathers, showcased garments from their vintage selections to span the decades.  The show is produced each year by Mary Kathryn Burnside, owner of Clash Dayton (pictured below with her daughter Freya Moon).

Now it’s up to the public (that’s you) to  determine the best overall hair and makeup team by voting in our online poll. The winning team will win a cash prize supplied by Clash.  Please vote below (you can only vote once/day) and voting will end Sunday, May 5th at midnight. Be sure and share this with your friends as well, so they can see some of the talented and creative folks we have here in the Miami Valley!

Amy Kollar Anderson – Amy Kollar Anderson creates surreal narrative paintings inspired by natural forms, the decorative arts and her love of animals. She takes these paintings and transforms them into fabric designs which she sews into fanciful, wearable artworks.

Hair and Makeup Team: Alessandra Hamilton, Erin Livingston, Ashley Gregory, Lee VanArtsdalen

Andrea Benson of Ravenbombshell – Andrea Benson is a retro inspired clothing designer who makes custom and limited quantity designs. She has mastered the styles reminiscent to 1940s and 1950s fashions with modern twists.

Hair and Makeup Team: Moxie Studio

Jacobee Rose Buchanan of Rose and Thorn – Jacobee Rose Buchanan is a former dancer, choreographer and costumer, who loves the theater and always brings a touch of drama to her work. Her designs are meant to tell a story, and blur the lines between costume and everyday wear. Each piece combines dark romance and delicate details with sharp edges, which is why she designs under the label “The Rose and Thorn.”

Hair and makeup team: Kami Raenelle Ross, Jayme, Audra Hayden, Jessica Gilbert

Grace Combs – Grace Combs is a CCAD student whose main focus is fashion design. This young designer romances the audience with a custom line for the Clash fashion show that emphasizes soft lines, feminine forms and flirty reveals.

Hair and Makeup Team: Drea Naschke, Joshua Vanity Lucas, Dallas Strong

Five Rivers MetroParks will offer live music and new, free fitness classes and starting this May at RiverScape MetroPark, 237 E. Monument Ave. in downtown Dayton.

Fitness in the Park kicks off with the new Cardio Dance in the Park on May 11, presented by Kettering Health Network and taught by Megan Millat of Fit N Fruitful. Returning this year is Yoga in the Park, which begins May 18 with a Vinyasa yoga practice led by Tori Reynolds of Speakeasy Yoga. Fitness programs are most Saturdays throughout the summer from 10 a.m. to noon.

Those who want a new fitness challenge this season can join Fit Body Boot Camp instructors on select Tuesdays starting in June for a high intensity interval training workout under the Pavilion. Bootcamp in the Park starts on Tuesday, June 11 and is from 5:30 to 6:30 pm. Fitness in the Park participants should bring water and a mat for yoga.

Also in May is the first concert in the summer-long RiverScape Summer Music Series, Pickin’ in the Park. May 3 from 6 to 10 pm, Flatland Harmony Experiment and Kind Country will perform string-picking American roots music. MetroParks Rangers, Dayton Police and Fire, and area cycling organizations will be on hand to talk to families about bike safety. Try a bike, get a free helmet and grab a snow cone (while supplies last).

The RiverScape Summer Music Series concerts are free for all ages and held under the RiverScape Pavilion. Food and drinks will be available for purchase, including craft beer and fare from local food trucks. Proceeds from beer sales benefit A Special Wish Foundation. Guests should bring a lawn chair for seating. A complete list of the RiverScape Summer Music Series concerts is atmetroparks.org/RiverScape.

Starting May 6 through the end of September, RiverScape MetroPark hosts Music@Lunch. Enjoy live acoustic music, free Wi-Fi and views of the Great Miami River from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm Monday through Friday. Grab lunch from a rotating selection of a daily food truck and the RiverScape Café.
