8 ‘Girls,’ One Crown….Miss Rubicon Returns.

May 16, 2019 By Joshua Stucky

Dayton’s Beloved RubiGirls

There’s a different kind of ‘Game of Thrones’ happening this weekend at Masque. For the first time since 1996, the RubiGirls will pick a Queen in the Miss Rubicon, 2019 drag pageant. The event, Sunday May 19th, will be a pageant unlike any other in Dayton. This pageant focuses squarely on camp and crazy! Categories range from ‘Parade of Nations’ to ‘Gem City Evening Gown.
‘Our theme this year is UNITED. It’s fitting considering the environment many our facing.’ Says Francine Du Bois, Miss Rubicon 1990. ‘The contestants start in a parade of national costumes, move into state costumes, do their chosen talents, and end the show in Gem City Evening Wear! Knowing the RubiGirls, I assure you the costumes will be over the top…and possibly ridiculous.’

Miss Rubicon 1991, India Summer will be on hand.

The Pageant got its start in 1989 on Rubicon Street when the emerging RubiGirls were in their mid-twenties. ‘We hadn’t raised a dime at that time…it was all about fun and madness.’ says contestant Fonda Peters. ‘Here we are in 2019, about to celebrate helping groups around the area, state and country with $2,000,000 in total donations. It’s such a landmark!’

‘I see it this way, the RubiGirls have remained inspirational through all kinds of trying times. For many of us, it has been 35 years of performing.’ says Anita Beer, Miss Rubicon 1993. ‘We have remained committed to helping folks off all walks of life.’

The pageant kicks off at 1:30pm, doors open at 1:00pm. The crowning will take place around 4 at the after party ‘tea dance.’ The pageant cost $25 for the show and the tea dance. Tickets for just tea dance are $10.

‘Tea Dances’ are growing in popularity across the country, and Dayton needs one.’ says Penni Sillin, Miss Rubicon 1995. ‘We are hoping it takes off so it can be more consistent in the community. They are a great way to make Sunday a true Funday!’

Pia and Fonda looking for fun this weekend!

The pageant has drawn 8 contestants in hopes of winning the crown. ‘8 is really perfect. And with the 5 judges in place, it will be a fair, fun and unforgettable night.’ Says India Summer, Miss Rubicon 1991. ‘All of the living Rubicon Queens* will be there. And even more exciting, many of the past performers are returning to say hello! (*Miss Rubicon, 1992, Esther Price passed away a few years ago.) I can guarantee she’ll be watching from upstairs, rooting these girls on. She loved a good pageant!’

Jackie O has a real chance of taking the crown.

‘We are so hopeful that we bring in a crowd as we are using our funds to sponsor AIDS/LifeCycle. https://www.aidslifecycle.org. 2 of the RubiGirls, Annie Biotix and Pussy Galore are riding in the California event. They need our support.’ says Lupe Valezz, the reigning Miss Rubicon.

The RubiGirls are also hopeful that the pageant remains a mainstay of the Dayton Drag scene.
‘We have expanded to so many events around the area like trivia, bingo and brunches, it is fun to do something more geared to drag. That’s how this whole thing got started, and it needs to be celebrated.’ Dana Sintell, the first Miss Rubicon chimes in. ‘ I think anytime you have a group of friends, showing off to the crowds and putting their best face forward….it’s got to be a blast!’

Extreme Eats at Chicago Gyros & Dogs

May 14, 2019 By Dayton937 1 Comment

The Italian Beef Sandwich and Bacon Fries

We found a spot for a true Food Adventure.  It is an eatery which gained some fame on Wilmington Ave, then moved to a shopping strip on Indian Ripple Rd, not far from the Greene.  Chicago Gyros and Dogs is bustling and people coming in and out for carry outs, or to dine in, means they are doing something right. Their wacky menu features all types of one-of-a-kind sandwiches.

Let’s learn about this eatery with the extreme menu, that brings hungry Daytonians back for more.

HERE’S THE SKINNY on CHICAGO GYROS AND DOGS:

This is “The Dougie” – it needs extra cheese to make it perfect

— Owned by a father and son, this local business has two locations:
3979 Indian Ripple Rd, Beavercreek  and
201 W McMillan St, Cincinnati near the campus of University of Cincinnati.

— Hours of the Beavercreek location are:
Monday – Saturday: 11am – 9pm
Sundays : 11am – 6pm

“The Fedyk “- A dog covered with chili , cheese and fries

— Menu features various takes on Gyros, Vienna Beef Hot Dogs, Burgers, and Fries.  The menu has options and add-ons that let you create your own monster sandwich.

— The biggest tip is to take advantage of their incredible lunch specials from 11am-2pm. You can save from 2 to 5 bucks with upgrades and more.  Each day has a different deal, check the chalk board near the counter for specials and deals.

We scoured the menu and have been there a half-dozen times.  We still have a couple of items to try, but we definitely have the feel for the menu enough to give you our patented “must eats.”

The Nasty Nati – 2 burgers, gyro meat, bacon, jalapenos and 2 kinds of cheese and more

“MUST EATS” at CHICAGO GYROS and DOGS:

— “THE DOUGIE” with EXTRA CHEESE:
This is a grilled cheese sandwich with gyro meat in it as well.  The regular menu item comes with one slice of cheese which just isn’t enough.  Make sure you order this deliciously toasted bread sandwich with extra cheese.  It makes all he difference.  Add some Tzatziki sauce and you are right where you wanna be.

— “THE FEDYK”:
Named after University of Dayton Football 2005 offensive lineman Dan Fedyk.  It’s a hot dog with mustard, onions, chili, cheese, fries and cole slaw.  This was our favorite dog on the menu.  It takes two hands to eat, and can quickly turn sloppy.

The Chicken Philly Gyro

— THE NASTY NATI:
This is the monster of the menu.  Instead of buns, it is served between two regular sized pitas.  It starts with two beef patties with provolone cheese, topped with gyro meat and Bacon.  Next it drizzled with nacho cheese and sprinkled with jalapenos and grilled onions.  It is then covered with Tzatziki sauce.  This sandwich is work of art and is a 10 napkin minimum.  This thing is so big , 2 people could share it.  This menu item defines the word “Food Adventure.”  Not for the squeamish, no rules here.

—THE CHICKEN PHILLY GYRO with EXTRA TZATZIKI SAUCE:
A huge heaping pita with grilled, diced chicken breast.  It is filled with Onions, Mushrooms, Green Peppers, Provolone & Mayo.  Add some extra tzatziki sauce and request that they grill the onions too.  This is a huge sandwich and very filling.  All of the menu sandwiches are large, so it is par for the course.

The Gyro Sandwich – hidden below are tomatoes

— THE REGULAR GYRO:
The basic Gyro sandwich is great.  It is stuffed with meat and is like what you get at the Dayton Greek fest, but about 4 times the meat inside.  It also has a lot of onions on it and a couple of tomatoes.  We prefer to ask that they grill the onions.  Just a tip, to lessen the sharpness of that raw onion that some people love.

The Dayton Dog is covered in fries

—  THE DAYTON DOG:
This is a Vienna Beef Hot Dog
on a poppy-seed bakery bun, with Mustard, Relish, Onions, Sport Peppers, Fries.  The sports peppers are hot and will sneak up on you.  It is a delicious dog, paying homage to the Gem city, with a little heat!

— THE CHICAGO DOG:
We again start with the poppy-seed bun and a Vienna hot dog.  Those hot dogs pop when you bite into them.  They have a little “snap.” It is topped with Mustard, Relish, Onions, Sport Peppers, Tomato, Dill Pickle, Celery Salt.  This is probably their signature dog. Again, watch those sports peppers, they will light you up!  So delicious, that you will crave them later.

The Chicago Dog

— THE ITALIAN BEEF SANDWICH:
This is not the Italian beef you are used to having.  This one has more onions and green peppers, making he dip into the au jus tricky.  This sandwich is loaded with toppings.  It is a huge meal in itself, and if you want more beef, less toppings, the more traditional order would be the Italian Beef with no, or light onions and green peppers.

—“CARDIAC” FRIES:
Oh, dare to indulge on this one.  These fries are topped with a scoop of Bob Evans sausage gravy and  covered in shredded cheese.  Get a fork, and go to town.  These were absolutely delicious, and our tip here is to ask for extra gravy.  Yeah .. we said it .

Cardiac Fries

The key here is that there are a lot of choices, so building or choosing a sandwich is easy.  The problem is picking which one or 2 to try, because you can have many favorites on this menu.  Chicago Gyro and Dogs has a lot to offer and the prices are very affordable.  The staff at the  Indian Ripple location are knowledgeable and friendly.

Although this place does have a decent cult following, and seems to do a brisk business, many people have yet to visit this establishment.  Check it out, as summer is a perfect time for Dogs and Gyros !

Thank you for reading this week’s article.  We have a Food Adventure feature article right here, each and every week on Dayton Most Metro.  For even more Food Adventures, like us on Facebook and discover why we are Dayton’s favorite food blog since 2008.

The Dayton Dance Initiative “Makes Moves” on Saturday!

May 13, 2019 By LIbby Ballengee

Dayton Dance Initiative lifts off on Saturday May 18, 2019 at the PNC Arts Annex. Dancers featured in performance include Katy Bowlby and Evan Pitts. Photo by Briana Paige.

The Dayton Dance Initiative, a collective of local, professional dancers has been formed and presents their inaugural show, “Making Moves” on May 18th, 2019 at 2:00pm and 7:30pm at the PNC Arts Annex in downtown Dayton. Tickets are on sale now through Ticket Center Stage.

Founded by Dayton Ballet dancer Jocelyn Green, this initiative brings together dancers from the Dayton Ballet, the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, and Arthur Murray Dance Center in an effort to expand opportunities for dancers to choreograph their own works. The aim is also to provide employment for the dancers during their “off” season and to broaden the reach of dance in Dayton.

“It’s been a challenging yet incredibly rewarding process so far. The dancers are working on completing their pieces and I think this show is really going to inspire the community.”, says Green. She is a recipient of the 2018/19 Artist Opportunity Grant through Culture Works (funded by Montgomery County Arts and Cultural District) which she is using to help fund this initiative. The group has recently reached their goal of raising an additional $10,000 to fund the performance.

“Making Moves” features 8 world premieres, each by a different choreographer, ranging in style from to contemporary to modern and includes ballroom as well. Local composer Austin Jaquith has created a brand new composition for one of the choreographic pieces. In keeping with the group’s mission to build bridges between artist and audience, a post show Q&A with the choreographers will follow both shows.

Check out a sneak peek at the YouTube link below!

‘Mamma Mia!’ Review – Dayton Playhouse – Super Troupers

May 13, 2019 By Russell Florence, Jr.

ABBA. Whether you loved the 1970s Swedish pop group for their tunes or fashion, there’s no denying their lasting impact on pop culture and the global landscape of pop music. Mamma Mia!, the 1999 musical blockbuster currently receiving its entertaining local community theater premiere at the Dayton Playhouse under the direction of Richard Lee Waldeck, enjoyably continues the group’s iconic legacy by featuring over 20 popular earworms written by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus.

Lindsey Cardoza (Rosie), Denise A. Schnieders (Donna) and Amy Askins (Tanya) perform “Dancing Queen” in Dayton Playhouse’s production of “Mamma Mia!” (Photo by Art Fabian)

At its core, Mamma Mia!, like all jukebox musicals, is primarily about the music, but this isn’t one of those poorly conceived jukebox musicals constantly stalling until the next song arrives due to a weak or scattershot plot. Here, a sweet, relatable, witty, and fun story of connection, female empowerment and friendship arises on a tiny Greek island centered on single mother Donna Sheridan, who delicately balances the upcoming nuptials of her only daughter Sophie with the surprise of being reunited with her three former lovers. As Donna and Sophie attempt to make sense of the past, in addition to Sophie’s desire to discover the identity of her father, both learn important lessons in forgiveness and acceptance.

Despite vocal strain at the performance attended, Playhouse newcomer Denise A. Schnieders is an admirable, believably conflicted Donna, holding firm to her strong ideals of independence while showcasing genuine, heartfelt concern for Sophie’s future, beautifully realized in the poignant ballad Slipping Through My Fingers (greatly heightened by Derek Dunavent’s lovely lighting design). Lillian Robillard, in her Playhouse debut, warmly navigates Sophie’s journey with winning vocals (most significantly The Name of the Game and I Have a Dream) and charming investigatory impulses. As Donna’s friends and former bandmates Rosie and Tanya, Lindsey Cardoza and Amy Askins are a delightful pair of comedic opposites. The nerdy, flirty Cardoza and sassy, sophisticated Askins bring kooky glee to Chiquitita and Dancing Queen while separately and respectively shining in energetic Take a Chance on Me (opposite humorous Brad Bishop as Bill Austin) and Does Your Mother Know (opposite Treonté King as ladies man Pepper).

Denise A. Schnieders (Donna) performs “Slipping Through My Fingers” opposite Lilly Robillard (Sophie) in Dayton Playhouse’s production of “Mamma Mia!” (Photo by Art Fabian)

Pleasant featured performances extend to Naman Clark as Sophie’s fiancée Sky, Ron Mauer (providing a comical, wistful Our Last Summer) as Harry Bright, Ted Elzroth (filling Knowing Me, Knowing You with clear intention) as Sam Carmichael, Ryan Petrie as Eddie, Kailey Yeakley as Lisa, Shana Fishbein as Ali, and Matt Wirtz as Father Alexandrios. Spirited ensemble members include Juangabriel Encarnacion, Casey Dillon, Nate Strawser, Bryan Schuck, Shanna Camacho, Anna Ryan Kolb, Kaylee Maple, Rachael Kindred, and Amber Pfeifer.

Waldeck’s artistic team includes choreographer Kara Castle (the oddly nonchalant Money, Money, Money notably lacks attack but Under Attack is a standout), set designer Red Newman, costumer Theresa Kahle, technical director Bob Kovach, prop mistresses Cathy Finn-Long and Ann Pelsor-Jones, and dialect coaches Fran Pesch and Annie Pesch. Interestingly, Waldeck places the orchestra above the audience in a booth in the rear of the auditorium. As the performance transpired, his decision led me to wonder at times if the orchestra was too loud or whether the cast wasn’t loud enough. Nonetheless, musical director/keyboardist Andrew Hackworth assembles an excellent group of seven musicians, particularly drummer Tyler Ohlemacher who wonderfully drives the beat in Knowing Me, Knowing You.

If you’re in the mood for a good dose of nostalgic escapism, don’t miss Mamma Mia! ABBA, thank you for the music.

Mamma Mia! continues through Sunday, May 19 at the Dayton Playhouse, 1301 E. Siebenthaler Ave., Dayton. Act One: 60 minutes; Act Two: 60 minutes. Performances are 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $20 for adults and $18 for seniors, students and military. For more information, visit daytonplayhouse.org.

Artist of the Week: Jen Perkins

May 13, 2019 By Bill Franz

“My husband (artist Brian Mathus) and I moved here from Portland” Jen told me. “We had been trying to buy a house there, but it just wasn’t working out. Then one day I used Google Earth to look at the neighborhood in Dayton where I had lived as a small child and also the neighborhood where I had visited my grandfather. Looking at Dayton’s streets a feeling came over me and I heard, or thought I heard, a voice saying “Salmon go thousands of miles to the place they were born.”

“I went online and looked at property in Dayton. I couldn’t believe the prices. So we bought a house in Dayton’s Five Oaks neighborhood and we left Portland.”

“Moving wasn’t easy. We had to do some work on the house we bought and we had to find jobs here. I found a job teaching art, which I love. And then we had to find this studio. Brian and I paint here almost every weekend. We bring the kids and they work on their own projects in the room that adjoins this one.”

“Almost all of my pieces involve encaustic. It wasn’t part of my training in college, but as soon as I tried it I fell in love with it. You can see I have an array of encaustics on the hot plate. I love how you can move the color around and watch it flow. I love how you can do layers and layers and then start carving into it. You can put additives with it. You can collage with it. It’s just very versatile.”

“But my pieces aren’t juts encaustic. There’s oil paint, gold leaf, shellac, gesso, and more. Everything is done on birch panels.”

Stacked Pickle Officially Opens Monday in Miamisburg

May 12, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

In it’s first Ohio location, the Stacked Pickle chain softly opened its doors this weekend on Springboro Pike, in a spot that formerly hosted Roosters.  This is the 10th location for owner Gary Brackett,  by former Indianapolis Colts football player and Super Bowl Champion, who’s a hands on operator that started the chain in 2010.  Upon our arrival we realized the interior was pretty much exactly the same, but freshly painted and much cleaner. Sports team flags and tv’s decorate the dining room, with an assortment of booths, tables and high-top tables surrounding the bar.

Once seated we were greeted by a delightful server, Kia (like the car-she shared).  Her enthusiasm for making sure we had a great experience was refreshing and she steered us to the sampler platter to start our meal.  This gave us a taste of the wings (we choose boneless with a spicy asian sauce) , fried pickles, onion rings and mac and cheese bites, served with ranch, bleu cheese and horseradish sauce.

The menu offers a pretty wide variety of stacked burgers, flatbreads, sandwiches, wraps, salads,  rice bowls, tacos, fish and chips and a chicken pasta dish.  All sandwiches are served with fries and you have the option to make your sandwich gluten free by requesting a Udi’s gluten free bun.  You can add wings to any meal for $2.99. Sauce options for wings include Hot, Hot BBQ, Spicy Asian, Spicy Honey Garlic, Sweet Habanero, Medium, Kentucky Bourbon, Teriyaki, BBQ Sauce.  They serve coke products, had a decent beer list- both bottles and on tap.  Liquor was not available yet, but should be very soon.

I chose the gluten-free grilled shrimp bowl with jasmine rice, veggies and a spicy honey garlic sauce.

My dining companion ordered the Firecracker Shrimp Wedge- an iceberg wedge, fried shrimp tossed in spicy aioli, ranch, bleu cheese crumbles, tomatoes, bacon, red onion, scallions, hold the onions.

Dessert options available are monster cookie pie, cheesecake, peanut butter silk pie and the brownie sundae which we choose with 2 spoons to share.

Overall we felt the food was good, there was a great energy and buzz in the dining room and our service was excellent. We spent $50 for 2 and walked away stuffed! We predict the Indianapolis based chain will have a big success with their first Ohio location.

Waynesville Restaurant Has a New Owner

May 10, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

For over 40 years the Morley family has operated the Village Family Restaurant in Waynesville. Serving home cooked meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week this mom and pop eatery is know for their reasonable prices and their apple dumplings and pies.  It’s a great stop if you’re riding on the nearby Little Miami Bike Trail and it’s community room that seats 35 hosts many local meetings and events.

But there’s something really new about the place-   Lacie Sims is the new owner! Formerly Vice President of Operations at National Processing, Lacie may be better know for her homemade noodles each year at the Dayton Oktoberfest Lederhosen Lunch.

The Morley family shared this on their blog:

“So much has changed over the years but one thing has remained consistent, we have always worked hard to be more than just another business in the community but a rather a business that was part of the community. For numerous reasons we have decided that it is time for us to make a change and would like to announce that the Restaurant will have a new owner, Lacie Sims. Lacie will bring a new energy and enthusiasm to the business and we are very confident that the tradition of the Village Restaurant will continue. Waynesville will always be “Home” to us and we plan to continue to be part of the community both in business and our personal lives. We are especially grateful to our family members who have always been so vital to our success and to our dedicated and caring staff, both past and present. We will continue to assist Lacie for the next several weeks through the transition period. Please stop in to share a memory and to welcome Lacie to our community.”

Lacie shared this statement about her new endeavor with us:

“I have been incredibly fortunate to find a local business that is such a community treasure. I look forward to continuing the great work of the Lamm and Morley families. All of your favorites will remain unchanged. I look forward to actively supporting the area as Mike and Donna have so generously done for so many years. And yes, the poppy seed dressing will still be available!”

Sound like a great excuse for a drive down to Waynesville!
