Workout outdoors with new fitness startup Honey Active

August 21, 2019 By Dayton937

Heather Allen

Heather Allen has weights, jump ropes and a bluetooth speaker — and she’ll travel to a park near you.

Heather is the founder of Honey Active, recently launched outdoor fitness startup. She leads outdoor group fitness classes in Dayton parks, and offers personal training and corporate fitness event services.

“I like showing people new spots — places they don’t think to workout,” she said. “You really can do it anywhere, and I’m proving that to people.”

Heather is an accountant-turned-fitness guru. She actually got into fitness, specifically running, after her first busy accounting season. A former cheerleader and soccer player, she had always been active, until that that stretch of 60- to 70-hour work weeks behind the desk.

“I started feeling slow and groggy and icky,” she recalled. “So I signed up for a marathon to motivate myself.”

She got addicted to running after that, she added with a laugh.

A few years ago, she helped start an accountability group with a few friends to talk about wellness. The group wound up deciding to do weekly workouts together, and Heather found herself organizing those workouts at Riverscape Metro Park.

Soon, people outside the original accountability group started showing up for the workout classes, so she rented Knack Creative’s Studio 42 and began holding training classes on the side. Requests from personal and corporate clients soon followed.

Sweat Bee is a boot camp style class that is 45 minutes of hard work.

Heather quit her day job and went full-time with Honey Active in March. She runs the bulk of her outdoor group classes at Oak & Ivy Park in the Wright Dunbar neighborhood she calls home. She hasn’t decided what her winter season will look like yet — if she’ll build out a studio or just find a big, open space.

“What drives me is helping people be more confident and energized,” she said. “I’m helping people find a healthy lifestyle, not chase fad diets. It gives me energy, helping others in this specific way, doing something I love and sharing it with people.”

She’s grateful she experienced those periods of inactivity because it helps her relate to her clients, she said.

“I believe in discipline, but I’m not no-excuses,” Heather said. “Life happens, we deal with it, then we move on and build.”

The desire to convey this sentiment shows in her company name — Honey is for natural, local; Active is for fitness, she said.

“I wanted the brand to reflect who I am,” she said. “A little fun, a little cheeky, and I don’t really like rules.”

Greek Street Food Truck Wins $10,000 Prize

August 20, 2019 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

The Winning Medal

You really could see this coming if you were paying attention.  Greek Street, is one of the hardest working Food Trucks in the Dayton area.  They were coming off a shout out from the Washington Post paper concerning their biscuits and lamb gravy.   For years they have been turning heads with unique spins on Greek food such as “street style gyros.”

This week they hit a huge goal and took home the grand prize at the Springfield Rotary Food Truck Competition.  The reward was 10,000 bucks.

Food Adventures was lucky enough to meet owner Chris Spritos in Fall 2015, as he was putting the finishing touches on his food truck.  A few months later, we got the green light to feature his Greek Street Food Truck in one of our articles.

From brewery stops, to Garlic Fest, to Food Truck rallies, and Americana Fest, we delight in seeing Greek Street out and about often.  Again, they are one of the hardest working Food Trucks in the business.

HOW DID THEY WIN $10,000 ???

The Sauteed Jumbo Shrimp Dish that won the competition !

There were 34 food trucks competing in this event.  Each food truck was asked to enter a dish for the judges to try and also had to serve that on the truck as well.

Greek Street’s entree was Sauteed Jumbo Shrimp.  It had a roasted corn and jalapeno salad.  It was accompanied with an avocado puree,  cumin-lime crema, feta cheese and micro-cilantro.

Five judges with culinary backgrounds judged the competition.  Greek Street’s entry was chosen as the best dish.

Chris Spiritos, owner of Greek Street Food Truck

ABOUT OWNER, CHRIS SPIRITOS:

— Chris grew up in a Greek family in Centerville. He went to Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Chicago to hone his craft.

— Chris also studied under the Chef for Oprah Winfrey, Chef Art Smith, while living in Chicago.  He was so well thought of, that Chris was flown to Oprah’s California home to help fix a dinner she hosted for the first graduating class of her school in Africa.

— Chris worked at L’Auberge and as a sous chef at Sung’s Korean Bistro in Cincinnati.  He also worked for the popular food truck,  Zombie Dogz.

Spanikopota is a spinach pie on the menu

HERE’S THE SKINNY ON GREEK STREET FOOD TRUCK:

— The Greek Street Food Truck has a core menu of:
   Gyros
   Greek Fries,
   Spanakopita (a Greek spinach Pie)
   Hummus

— They use no compressed or processed meats.  The lamb gyros are made using braised legs of lamb.  Other gyro options include shrimp, chicken, vegetarian and on occasion, pork belly.

Shrimp Gyro Street Style – Big Ragu’s favorite item on the food truck…

— The menu will feature daily, revolving specials as well

Obviously the SAUTEED JUMBO SHRIMP is a “must eat” that will be featured on the truck, but what else are favorites?   Here are our choices ….

GREEK STREET FOOD TRUCK “MUST EATS:

Lamb Gyro

—SHRIMP GYRO, STREET STYLE: Stacked rotisserie chicken breasts slices, piled into a pita and topped with “street style toppings.”  Street style means:  tomato jam, pickled red onions, crumbled feta, fresh herbs, fries, and tzatziki sauce.  Quite honestly, one of the most flavorful and unique gyros we have had.  If you try one thing, this is item to grab.

Fresh Baklava

— LAMB GYRO, TRADITIONAL STYLE:  Shaved slices of braised lamb.  This is a throwback to the gyros of the old country with “traditional toppings.”  Traditional toppings are: tomato, tzatziki sauce, onions, smoked paprika and french fries.  This gyro is authentic.  It is like a steak sandwich, no processed meat here. Great food on the “go.”

— HOMEMADE BAKLAVA : The recipe is his mom’s, and it is a traditional favorite.  Sometimes they even offer baklava over ice cream.

NEWS !!! GREEK STREET LOOKING FOR A STOREFRONT !!

We have some exclusive scoop to end on. Greek Street is currently looking in the Centerville/Washington Township area for a brick and mortar location!  What an incredible sight a “Greek Street” restaurant would be for locals !

Thanks for reading this week’s Food Adventure feature article.   Visit us each and every week for EXCLUSIVE stories on Dayton’s best foodstuffs.  Join the 8,000 Dayton foodies that follow us on Facebook HERE

Dayton Fundraisers to Benefit the Dayton Oregon District Tragedy Fund

August 19, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

A gunman opened fire in Dayton’s Oregon District early on August 4th, killing nine people and wounding at least 3o others.  A horrific event in our beloved entertainment district.  And Dayton reacted how we always do, as a community, joining together to try to help.  I continue to be amazed by the generosity of our town and our ability to open our hearts and wallets to those in need.

Over the last 8 days, dozens of restaurants donated % of sales to the newly created Dayton Oregon District Tragedy Fund, created by The Dayton Foundation. The Bengals, the Browns and NFL Foundation combined donated $100,000, Macy’s pitched in with $20,000, a one day sale by Esther Price raised over $85,000, the Connor Group donated $100,000 and Lady Gaga funded Donor’s Choice requests for teacher’s here in Dayton as well as El Paso.

Local businesses continue to plan fundraisers and here’s a list of ays you can help:

Flanagan’s will donate $1 for every pint of the new collab beer sold during the launch party, and Toxic will match it, and the money will go to The Dayton Foundation‘s Oregon District Victims Fund.

Tuesday, Aug 27th,  5– 10pm
Oregon District Spend-a-Thon

Dayton’s Oregon District is comprised almost entirely of small, local, independent businesses that rarely have the funds to fall back on when forced to close for multiple days. Your patronage directly supports your neighbors most affected by August 4’s tragedy.

Come get dinner, drinks, a hat, an album – there’s so much to do, all thanks to our wonderful small businesses and the owners and workers that operate them! There will be live music playing at many spots throughout the district, donating their time for tips for the Dayton Oregon District Tragedy fund.

A creative, therapeutic event for Daytonians.

We’re paying it forward with a message of love and hope.

Arrive to the location at 6 pm on Tuesday, August 27th. All supplies are provided along with instruction – but the creativity is up to you! Every mug will be cohesive with a Greater Dayton Mugs of Hope logo that will be pre-screened on each. 500 mugs will be painted during this event.  There is a $5 registration fee to hold your seat that will be donated to a charitable organization selected by the location you are attending.

Afterwards, we will fire them in our kilns. The mugs will be food-safe and ready for daily use. To continue the community atmosphere, we will be going to various locations in the Greater Dayton region to pass out the completed mugs, as well as few “grand prize” items such as gift cards from local businesses. Each Mug of Hope will be handed to a complete stranger, so the painter of the mug will not receive their mug back. This concept is intentional. We want the community to feel connected, not by tragedy, but through hope. Write a message on the bottom of you mug and follow us at #DaytonMugsofHope. You, too, can pick up a mug of your own by another Daytonian!

Dayton Porchfest is back for a third year! It’s a day where music fills the streets and porches of St Anne’s Hill, one of Dayton’s most charming historic neighborhoods. It’s a free, family friendly event that runs from 1:30-7pm on Saturday August 24, 2019.

Dayton has a rich musical history and active music scene, which continues today. Dayton Porchfest is committed to reflecting that in its selection of musical artists, from funk and blues to indie rock and jazz, classical and country, to bluegrass and old timey that has deep Appalachian traditions here. The event also celebrates the ethnic diversity of the region, a reflection of our “Welcome Dayton” spirit that has contributed to a significant influx of immigrants and refugees over the past decade.

Dayton Porchfest is an initiative of The Collaboratory, a civic innovation lab that moves ideas to action. The Collaboratory provides infrastructure for people and organizations to collaboratively develop community initiatives that generate new economic, civic and creative opportunities and value. The result is a healthier, more thriving region. All proceeds from Dayton Porchfest go to support the work of The Collaboratory.
