(DE-FI) Seeking Input on Fashion Coworking Space

August 18, 2019 By Dayton937

Caressa Brown founded (DE-FI), the Dayton Emerging Fashion Incubator, six years ago with the goal of making Dayton the fashion capital of the Midwest.

Today, she is poised to open the region’s first multidisciplinary fashion coworking studio — and she wants your input.

“We’re shedding our grassroots structure and becoming more visible within the community,” Caressa said. “The multidisciplinary fashion coworking space will offer fashion professionals an affordable and unique workspace right here in Dayton — a fashion business hub created by and for the fashion community.”

(DE-FI) is holding a series of bi-weekly public meetings  in the Dayton Metro Library Main Branch’s Conference Room 1B, to get community feedback on the general direction, business model, and logistics for the fashion coworking space. The current vision for it incorporates a design studio featuring design software, designated and roaming desks, designated and roaming offices, a visual art studio, a fashion studio, a makerspace, a micro-manufacturing/fabrication space, photography studio, sewing studio, conference room, production room, classroom space, networking space, and venue rental.

Participants in the Aug. 3 session will hear about the progress of the local fashion community and will work together in small groups to generate ideas for the character and amenities of the space that may be incorporated into the overall plan, Caressa said.

Follow-up meetings will be held at the Dayton Metro Library Main Branch on  Aug. 31, 10a-12p, Conference Room 3A; & Sept. 14, 10a-12p, Conference Room 3A.

(DE-FI) currently operates a number of subsidiaries that work different angles to make Dayton a fashion center. Among them, The Gem City Sewing Company trains individuals to sew, prioritizing work with underserved communities; Dayton Garment & Textile District offers micro-manufacturing and an online registry of seamstresses, fabric makers, pattern makers, weavers, fabric dyers, beaders, embroiderers and vendors; & Dayton Threads, an online boutique, hopefully soon to be a brick and mortar shop, offers retail space for individual and emerging designers to sell their products.

(DE-FI) also runs Dayton Fashion Week, and holds workshops on topics ranging from combatting sexual harassment and trafficking to advocating legislators and establishing reporting hotlines to combat the predatory aspects of the fashion industry.

For more info, visit (DE-FI) online.

#DaytonStrong IPA Released today!

August 17, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

Dayton Brewery Alliance releasing #daytonstrong IPA to help Tornado victims as ongoing effort.

The Dayton Brewery Alliance is continuing their relief efforts by collaborating on a beer called #daytonstrong IPA. All proceeds of the beer will go to the Dayton Foundation as part of an ongoing effort to help Dayton area people in need after the devastating tornadoes passed through the area on Memorial Day weekend 2019.

Several of the breweries will be making versions of #daytonstrong IPA to serve in their taprooms and to sell to other member breweries of the Dayton Brewers Alliance.  Warped Wing will be canning over 1,000 cases to be distributed out to the market.

“2019 has been a heartfelt and difficult year for the people of Dayton”, said Nick Bowman, VP/Sales & Marketing and Managing Partner at Warped Wing. “That said, it’s amazing how people in our community come together to help friends and neighbors in need. It speaks to the level of character, care and giving that makes our city so great”, said Bowman.

“The can embodies a minimalistic, purposefully under designed look as not to over-shadow what we are trying to do. This is about all the people in need. Our neighbors, many, who have lost everything”, said Bowman

Copy on the front of the can reads:

Through darkness comes light.
Through fear comes compassion.
Through tragedy comes triumph.

The release of the beer will follow the schedule below:

— Taproom Release at all the Dayton Area Breweries on Saturday, August 17th

– Warped Wing will start distributing cans only to bars, restaurants and retails accounts starting Monday, August 19th

This project was made possible by the following sponsors and partners who contributed either raw materials or services. Those groups are as follows; TRIPACK, LD Carlson, Century Label, Country Malt Group, John Pattison, Brewer’s Supply Group

McCoy on Movies: Good Boys

August 14, 2019 By Tabari McCoy

Tweens walk the line between innocence, debauchery in good-natured Good Boys

“I don’t think that drone is flying to wherever are friends are playing Fortnite …” Lucas (Keith L. Williams), Max (Jacob Tremblay) and Thor (Brady Noon) in a scene from GOOD BOYS. Credit: Ed Araquel/Universal Pictuers. © 2019 Universal Studios.

RED BAND TRAILER (NSFW)

KEY CAST MEMBERS: Jacob Tremblay, Keith L. Williams, Brady Noon, Molly Gordon, Lil Rel Howery, Retta, Izaac Wang, Millie Davis, Josh Caras, Will Forte and Midori Francis

DIRECTOR(S): Gene Stupnitsky

WEB SITE: https://www.goodboysmovie.com/
THE BACK STORY: Three best friends – Lucas (Keith L. Williams), Thor (Brady Noon) and Max (Jacob Tremblay) – are adjusting to life in 6th grade when they one of them gets invited to a party that could change their life. That’s because the party is a kissing party and Max’s crush Brixlee (Millie Davis) is going to be there.

Unfortunately for Max and his two friends a.k.a. “The Bean Bag Boys,” none of them have any idea how to kiss, so they find themselves in a panic of trying to learn on the fly. This leads to the bright idea to use Max’s dad’s (Will Forte) work drone to spy on Hannah (Molly Gordon) and her boyfriend Benji (Josh Caras), who Hannah and her friend Lily (Midori Francis) to show up with the drugs for their road trip to Chicago. So … What happens when the he boys inadvertently find themselves on the run from Hannah and Lily and needing to replace Max’s dad’s work property?

A whole lot of things that your average sixth grader isn’t prepared to handle, that’s for sure.
THE REVIEW: A comedy that rides a fine line between showing its trio of leads as innocent youngsters … Who also can be a tad foul-mouthed and too knowledgeable for their own good, Good Boys is a funny, entertaining romp that is more sweet than it is sinful. But when the film is sinful, it’s likely going to be more than the average parent (moreso than their children) can likely handle given the exposure to sex toys, drugs and alcohol and hearing three kids who look as innocent as our makeshift heroes do curse. But therein lies the hook of the film as the boys are not troublemakers out to looking to do foul things; instead, they are more apt to try and do the right thing in the most ludicrous of situations, which is what results in the film’s best moments more often than not.Whereas Jacob Tremblay (Room) does a good job of serving as the group’s makeshift leader, Keith L. Williams constant snitching on the trio’s misdeeds (even when they weren’t doing anything that wrong) plays well for comedic effect affect against Thor’s wannabe bad boy (who really doesn’t) act. Thus, you get a mix of kids trying to do what all children do at their age: Trying to become more mature and find their way in the world even though it’s obvious to almost anyone looking they have no clue what they’re doing.

That strive to maintain the innocence of the characters does restrain Good Boys at times from reaching its potential peak hilarity as there are several moments you can feel that either director Gene Stupnitsky or the film’s producers said “let’s not push further than this.” This creates a bit of a catch-22 for the audience, for once you’ve found yourself laughing at a boy giving his crush a necklace that is NOT a necklace, you’ve pretty much already gone past the “see, we’re not pushing the envelope that far” notion. At its essence, Good Boys is a film about trying to maintain a childlike innocence in a world where that is increasingly hard to do and growing up through and overcoming adversity … Just with more items you’d expect to find in your closet than your kid’s.

So …. If you’re looking for a comedy with heart and spirit that also will make sure to talk to your kids about staying out of mommy and/or daddy’s drawers when they’re not at home, Good Boys will likely win your heart with laughs a plenty. If you’d rather not look at your young middle schooler and have to have a conversation on the way home in the car, you might wish to sit this one out or – as some of the parents at the advance screening yours truly attended – leave them at home.

Just don’t say that no one warned you what you were getting into.

How To See Yellow Springs Filmmakers American Factory Documentary

August 14, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

American Factory, the documentary from Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Productions and Participant Media, will premiere on Netflix on August 21. The streaming service had acquired the pic from co-directors Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, where it won the U.S. Documentary directing award.

This becomes the first title from the Higher Ground slate to land a spot on the service after the Obamas inked their multi-year agreement in May 2018 to produce films and series for Netflix.

The documentary focuses on post-industrial Ohio, where a Chinese billionaire opens a new factory in the husk of an abandoned General Motors plant, hiring 2,000 blue-collar Americans. Early days of hope and optimism give way to setbacks as high-tech China clashes with working-class America.

The filmmakers capture every key moment in this high-stakes intercultural chess game, revealing how American and Chinese workers view themselves within systems of authority.

For FREE General Admission tickets (while they last) to the Dayton Premiere of AMERICAN FACTORY, go to:

http://www.gofobo.com/AmericanFactoryGA

We recommend you “Sign up as Guest” – it’s a little faster.

You can choose to select 1 or 2 free tickets. You can print your passes (tickets) at home, or show up to the Will Call area at the Victoria and your name will be on the list.

The film will be screened at both  The NEON  and the Little Art Theatre in Yellow Springs Aug 21-27. It will also begin streaming on Netflix on August 21st.

McCoy on Movies: Angry Birds 2

August 13, 2019 By Tabari McCoy

Angry Birds 2 full of enjoyable animated lunacy for kids, adults alike

“Look – that’s all the parents laughing at the jokes the little kids aren’t getting!” L to R: Bomb (Danny McBride), Chuck (Josh Gad), Silver (Rachel Bloom), Red (Jason Sudeikis), Courtney (Awkafina), Garry (Sterling K. Brown) and Leonard (Bill Hader) in Columbia Pictures and Rovio Animations’ ANGRY BIRDS 2. Credit: © 2019 Courtesy of Sony Pictures. All rights reserved.

WATCH THE TRAILER(S) HERE:

KEY CAST MEMBERS: Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Leslie Jones, Bill Hader, Rachel Bloom, Awkwafina, Sterling K. Brown, Eugenio Derbez, Danny McBride, Peter Dinklage, Pete Davidson, Zach Woods, Dove Cameron, Lil Rel Howery, Nicki Minaj, Beck Bennett and Brooklynn Prince

DIRECTOR(S): Thurop Van Orman

WEB SITE: https://sites.sonypictures.com/angrybirds/site/en/
THE BACK STORY: Following the events of the first movie, Angry Birds 2 once again stars the voice of Jason Sudeikis as Red, the town outcast turned hero when he – along with help from Chuck (Josh Gad), Bomb (Danny McBride) and Terence (Nolan North) – ended up saving Bird Island from the green pig egg-stealing invasion led by Leonard (Bill Hader). Now happily enjoying his role as the leader of the island, Red is enjoying life with little anger these days …

And that’s when Leonard returns to inform him of a third island where Zeta (Leslie Jones), the leader of the eagles, is plotting to take out both of their homes.

Being forced to work with Leonard – as well his assistant Courtney (Awkwafina) and his tech pig Garry (Sterling K. Brown) – would be bad enough for Red, but add Bird Island’s own Mighty Eagle (Peter Dinklage) and Chuck’s whiz kid sister Silver (Rachel Bloom) to the mix and you’ve got everything you need to make Red one very angry bird. Again.

THE REVIEW: In a world where superhero movies have gone from pitiful to (usually) fantastic, the original Angry Birds movie was an OK adaptation of a video game to animated big screen adventure. It established the worlds of its pixelated counterparts where a story could be told, delivered enough family-friendly adventure and set the stage for future iterations of the franchise if it did well. Well, it obviously did well enough to result in The Angry Birds Movie 2, which for many people would seem to be easily dismissible as another unnecessary sequel probably best saved for little kids or anyone who really liked the first movie or the mobile game it was inspired by … And if you are in the former camp more than the latter, you’d likely be forgiven for your decision to ignore adding no. 2 to your watchlist.Once you see it, however, you’ll likely be pleasantly surprised to learn that Angry Birds 2 is a throwback to the days when Tiny Toon Adventures and Animaniacs dominated 90s animated programming – for this Looney Tunes on acid affair features enough entertainment to make even the angriest movie goer laugh repeatedly.

Angry Birds 2 is one of those movies where everything nuance and detail clicks; whereas the first movie felt a little predictable and more about telling the story, Angry Birds 2 finds its vocal actors injecting each character with distinct personality, playing well off each other and walking the line between “did they just say that in a kids’ movie?!” to the point adults where the film feels entertaining enough for kids, but really made for adults. Jones shines as Zeta, delivering in your face quips that strike a good balance between traditionally cartoon silly and effective with the rest of the cast following suit as well. Director Thurop Van Orman keeps things moving along quite efficiently, his storyboards coming to life in a fashion where each scene feels like its own Saturday Night Live sketch in the frame of one giant story. Then again, that should come as no surprise given all the SNL alumni in the cast; whoever picked the film’s musical soundtrack should win some sort of award (or at least be given a bonus) as each song is placed in perfect accordance with the scenes, setting moods and/or enhancing jokes.

Throw in the Despicable Me/Minions-like B story involving the Hatchlings from the first film and one of them’s desperate, almost like Scrat in the Ice Age franchise-like pursuit to retrieve their baby sisters and you have a near perfect balance of entertainment for those 8 to 12 years old with those 18 and older. It all helps make Angry Birds 2 the funniest animated movie thus far in 2019 and one of the more entertaining to boot.

Just don’t get angry at anyone but yourself if you choose to skip it in favor of that app you keep playing with on your smartphone instead.

Dayton’s Forgotten Chili Parlor

August 13, 2019 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

5 Star Chili on W. Siebenthaler Ave

Three weeks ago, while driving around West Siebenthaler Ave, we came across a restaurant we had no idea existed.  It was called “5 Star Chili.”  We decided to go in and explore for an impromptu Food Adventure.  The food was great so we went back 2 more times in the following weeks.  It was time to share an article on Dayton Most Metro about this forgotten chili parlor.

HERE’S THE SKINNY on 5 STAR CHILI:

— 5 Star Chili is a family owned business, located at 3257 W Siebenthaler Ave in Northwest Plaza

— The restaurant has been around since 1993, and is known for Cincinnati Style Chili

— Hours are – MON – SAT 11am -4pm, closed on Sundays.

The 5 Way Chili at 5 Star

— Menu consists of chili, burgers, dogs, sausages, gyros and fries.  They also sell our favorite, Mikesells Chips and have a full selection of soft drinks in cans.

— Seating is limited to a few tables for four, tightly packed in, or carryout is available.

— The food is served in “to go” containers whether you are eating in or not.

— In a city of Skyline Chili and Gold Star Chili, this is a similar product, but a different taste when it comes to seasonings.  If you like those two restaurants, you will like 5 Star Chili.

Inside 5 Star Chili

Now you know about 5 Star Chili. When you are here, what are the best food items on the menu?

MUST EATS at 5 STAR CHILI:

— 5 WAY CHILI:
Delicious combo of chili, spaghetti, beans, onions and cheese served in a “to go” container.  The flavor of the chili is great.  We suggest adding a drizzle of hot sauce on top to complete the experience.

THE GYRO:

The Gyro from 5 Star Chili

A good gyro, very reminiscent of the ones they serve at Dayton’s Greek Fest, except these onions are cooked.  The tomatoes and tzatziki sauce are buried inside the gyro pita.  Ir is a good, easy to eat option.

— THE CHILI CHEESE CONEY WITH EVERYTHING:
A small hot dog served with chili, onions, mustard and a mound of cheese.  Again, drizzle the top with hot sauce to get the full flavor effect.  One visit we were super hungry and ordered an extra hot dog with just mustard.  Damn was it good..

Cheese Coney with Everything

— THE PHILLY CHEESESTEAK:
Maybe the dark horse of the menu.  This sandwich was great.  Shaved steak served with mayo, cheese, onions, green peppers and banana peppers served on a hoagie bun.  Perfect contents to bun ratio, it was delicious.

We have also tried the plain hot dogs with mustard, the bowl of chili by itself and the chili cheese fries.  All were good in a pinch.

It would be nice to see 5 Star Chili get a little love from Dayton public.  While we were in there, sometimes it was busy, sometimes it was quiet.  If you live nearby, or are in the area and you are a Cincinnati Style chili fan, then you have to stop and check this place out.  Dayton’s only, non-chain, stand alone chili parlor, is waiting for you.

On Golden Pond Opens Thursday at La Comedia

August 13, 2019 By Dayton Most Metro

On Golden Pond is a classic American comedy/drama that’s every bit as touching, warm, and witty today as when it debuted on Broadway in 1979. The Academy Award-winning 1981 film adaptation starred Henry Fonda, Katherine Hepburn and Jane Fonda.

Retired couple Ethel and Norman Thayer spend every summer at their home on Golden Pond. This year, their adult daughter visits, bringing along her fiancé’s teenage son. The turbulent relationship between father and daughter, the generation gap between young and old, and the difficulties facing a couple in the twilight years of a long marriage, make for a moving play that gives us unique insight into the modern American family.

Local Author Pens Dayton Beer History Book

August 12, 2019 By Kevin Gray

With nearly twenty breweries in the Greater Miami Valley, Dayton’s craft beer resurgence is no longer a surprise to most people. However, today’s breweries draw upon a long brewing tradition in the area, one with historical roots that many may find staggering.

Local author Timothy R. Gaffney’s new book, Dayton Beer: A History of Brewing in the Miami Valley, takes an in-depth look at how Dayton made beer and how beer made Dayton. By piecing together thousands of public records, Gaffney paints a coherent view of the Miami Valley’s brewing heritage as it existed leading up to Prohibition. And it’s worth noting that Gaffney timed the release of his book with the centennial anniversary of that failed experiment.

Just as the Miami Valley’s brewing trail extends beyond the borders of Dayton proper, so does Gaffney’s report. In covering not only Montgomery, but also five other surrounding counties—Auglaize, Clark, Darke, Miami, and Shelby—Gaffney depicts a broad picture of how interconnected the brewing community was and how integral is was to the daily life of Southwest Ohio citizens. He explores not only the breweries themselves, but also the individuals behind the beer.

Gaffney is touring the Miami Valley this fall, giving a talk about his book. Fittingly enough, the talks are nearly all held at breweries (except the Barrel House, which is a Dayton beer institution in its own right). His first talk was Wednesday, August 7th at Warped Wing, but if you missed that event, he has seven more appearances scheduled. See the schedule below, or find more details on Gaffney’s FaceBook events page: https://www.facebook.com/DaytonBeerBook/

Battle Sight Tech gearing up to launch suite of new products

August 8, 2019 By Dayton937

Nick Ripplinger

As Dayton startup Battle Sight Technologies approaches its second birthday, the company is preparing to launch a suite of new products to serve the warfighter, founder and president Nick Ripplinger said.

Battle Sight Technologies recently announced a new licensing deal with the Air Force Research Lab that would enable it to build out its suite of infrared spectrum tools using a new phosphor technology.

This phosphor works like the light in watch dials — it charges on any type of light, then emits in the infrared spectrum, Ripplinger explained. The charge lasts about 20 hours.

Battle Sight will be using this new material to spin out at least four new products for its military customers.

The first product will be phosphor-equipped badges, enabling friendly identification on the battlefield or in a training environment, Ripplinger said.

The phosphor tech can also be incorporated into a paint-like substance to use to mark tools to make it easier to identify items on a patrol or similar mission.

The tech can be used as a sort of backlight for information to allow soldiers to keep track of important frequencies or locations – think the reflective bands that quarterbacks use to keep info on plays on their person, Ripplinger described.

Also, in its powder form, the phosphor can be used to tag and track objects, he added.

Battle Sight Technologies is also developing a second product with the infrared capsules it uses in its CrayTac markers. The new product is an infrared sea dye marker that utilizes buoyant, chemiluminescent squares to float with a life raft to make it easier to find downed pilots and aircraft faster, Ripplinger explained.

The sea dye was developed in tandem with end-user feedback, Ripplinger said — military leaders came to the shop and brainstormed with the Battle Sight Team, which then won the first Air Force Pitch Day competition. The company was able to use the prize money to prototype the new product, which debuted at Tech Warrior in June.

“There’s no better feeling than when the warfighter is coming to us with a problem because they think we can fix it,” Ripplinger said. “We have the best customers in the world.”

Battle Sight’s new suite of phosphor tech products are expected to hit the market in Q1 of 2020.

As the product lines grow, Ripplinger hopes to grow the team as well. He’ll expects to hire four to six employees in year three, ranging from product managers to admins to brand managers.

Interested in working for this awesome veteran-owned Dayton startup? Check out battlesighttech.com for more info on the company.
