The Countdown is On For the Return of Shamrock Shakes!

February 6, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

McDonald’s has announced that Shamrock Shakes will be back in stores on February 19th.

The shake, which was invented by McDonald’s franchise owner Hal Rosen in 1967, was first launched at select restaurants in 1970, so this marks the minty drink’s 50th anniversary. Interesting fact, initially, the shake was lemon/lime flavored with vanilla ice cream, lemon/lime sherbet, and vanilla syrup. By 1973, the shake was merely a green colored vanilla shake, eliminating the lemon/lime sherbet. It is now mint flavored. In 1974, sales from the popular seasonal drink helped build the very first Ronald McDonald House, which helps families with children who need medical care.  .25 cent from every sale supports Ronald McDonald House Charities of Dayton

McDonald’s has also revealed a new menu item, the Oreo Shamrock McFlurry, will debut on the same day as Shamrock Shake’s return to McDonald’s menus. This new dessert consists of vanilla soft serve blended with Shamrock flavor and Oreo cookie pieces. How good does that sound?

“We’re excited to serve up a new way to experience the one-of-a-kind Shamrock flavor in our new Oreo Shamrock McFlurry,” Linda VanGosen, McDonald’s vice president of menu innovation, said in a press release. “Our chefs worked to get the perfect balance of Oreo cookies and mint for this new delicious dessert. We can’t wait for customers to get a taste this spring.”

Like every year, these items are only available for a limited time.

Grand Opening of B&G’s Cigar Lounge

February 6, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

Friday, Feb 7th from 5-9pm is the Grand Opening of B&Gs Cigar Lounge located at 319 West Central Avenue in West Carrollton.  Well actually according to co-owner Gonzo, this celebration is for Phase One of the business, which consists of the humidor (pictured below) and the first lounge, called the Casa de Coronas (which translates to house of crowns). Comfy chairs allow you to watch your favorite game in a relaxed environment and there are plenty of tables for a game of dominos or cards.

A fine selection of over 700 premium cigars awaits your selection in the humidor and you don’t need to be intimidate,  they are happy to help you find the right one for you.  Gonzo explains that determining the right cigar, be it mild, medium, or full flavored, is often based on your palate, which can change based on your most recent meal, and other factors, like whether you are well hydrated or not.

Phase two of the 8000 square foot building will come mid-summer, adding two private seating areas and more lounge space.
There’s even room for future expansion, should they determine they need more space.

Co-owners  Bryan Emerson and Gonzo Gonzales  met in 2003, when they served in Korea. Together they will strive to make B&G’s a home away from home for cigar lovers, or as Gonzo says, “a place where you can come in grab a quality stick and enjoy it in the lounge.”  You can purchase a cigar for as little as $4 and currently the most expensive one the stock runs $22, but they’ll soon be adding some higher end cigars, which will retail for about $40.  While you always hear about the excellence of Cuban cigars, Gonzo shared that “Nicaragua is making some cigars that are being well received world-wide right now.”

They also have a full selection of cutters, lighters and even home humidors which from from $50 – $250 and gift certificates are available.  Look for upcoming cigar tastings, bourbon pairings and other events in the future.

John Legend Bigger Love Tour Coming to The Rose

February 6, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

EGOT winner John Legend today announced his Bigger Love Tour will kick-off on August 12 in Dallas and visit more than 25 cities across North America this summer, including a stop in Legend’s home state of Ohio to perform at Rose Music Center on Saturday, September 5th. The War and Treaty will join Legend as support.

Tickets for the Huber Heights show will go on sale to the public beginning at 10:00am on Friday, February 14th at www.Ticketmaster.com andwww.Rosemusiccenter.com. Ticket prices include parking and are subject to applicable Ticketmaster fees.  Dates, times and artists subject to change without notice. All events rain or shine.

Legend jumpstarted 2020 with the release of his newest song “Conversations In The Dark,” which hit #1 on the overall iTunes songs chart upon its release. The song was featured on NBC’s Award-winning hit television show This Is Us featuring a performance by John on the show.

MTV says, “John Legend has written the world’s sweetest vows on ‘Conversations In The Dark’,” and calls it a “tear-jerker,” while Billboard declares that “Conversations,” is “his romantic new song….[that] details the moments while falling in love.” You can listen to “Conversations in The Dark” HERE.

“Conversations in the Dark” captures the warmth and sweetness of falling in love in the only way that Legend can. The song is a sweet, stripped-down love letter that echoes the quiet conversations that happen between two people when no one else is around.

Legend, the “King of Valentine’s Day,” recently lovingly parodied the “Queen of Christmas” Mariah Carey’s buzzworthy social media video on Twitter. PopSugar says Legend, “posted a hilarious video of him getting in the Valentine’s Day spirit. Taking a note from Mariah Carey, he started the video dressed in festive holiday-season-esque clothes….and eventually woke up to a room decorated with rose petals and hearts as he shamelessly blasted his song ‘Conversations in the Dark.’”

Legend recently won his 11th GRAMMY Award for “Higher” with DJ Khaled and Nipsey Hussle. Legend, Khaled and friends performed the song at the 62ndAnnual GRAMMY Awards in honor of Nipsey, which many lauded one of the most moving highlights including the New York Times calling it one of the “Best” moments of the night. PEOPLE magazine’s reigning “Sexiest Man Alive” is also currently a coach on his third season of NBC’s “The Voice” He won his first season as a coach with his mentee Maelyn Jarmon.

Dayton Book Fair Chooses Beneficiaries for 2020

February 6, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

The Dayton Book Fair announced that they have chosen this year’s three beneficiaries to receive proceeds from their 50th anniversary Book Sale in November 2020. Each beneficiary will receive a grant of around ten thousand dollars.

This year the three beneficiaries are:

The Dayton International Peace Museum is the only brick and mortar Peace Museum in North or South America and the houses the only interactive exhibit on the Dayton Peace Accords in the world. They are the official repository for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize and run a very successful Peace Camp for children ages 5-12. They maintain changing exhibits on the many challenges to peace and peacemaking including the effects of violence and war, gun culture, poverty, bullying, the environment, and international cooperation.

The Xenia Area Community Theater is an all-volunteer theater and gallery space established in 2005 to serve area interests in performing and fine arts and stimulate community involvement in those areas. They produce eight fully staged plays during their regular season (to date more than 100 productions) along with several summer shows and youth camps. Their plans for the grant from the Book Fair Foundation include a week-long Special Needs Children’s Initiative workshop and performance for children on the Autism Spectrum, and to improve theatre accessibility to a variety of groups whose ability to attend live theater is hampered by ticket cost.

WYSO, the public radio station long-associated with Antioch College has recently separated their university relationship to become an independent entity. While much of their budget pays for nationally syndicated public radio programming, the grant from the Dayton Book Fair will enable them to fund grassroots programming in the Center for Community Voices, for the documentary and story-telling segments produced by Dayton Youth Radio, Women’s Voices (produced by female inmates at a Dayton correctional facility) and County Lines, focusing on the rural populations in our community.

“It is challenging to choose just three,” said Dayton Book Fair Executive Director Larkin Vonalt. “It is a multi-day project for the Foundation’s board to winnow down from dozens of excellent organizations all doing important work to just three.”

Asked about criteria that the board might consider in choosing the finalists, Ms. Vonalt noted that they examine the size of the organization, the need for funding, and how the board feels that the year-long partnership will work.

“There are so many intangibles,” she added, “and at the very end when we’ve narrowed it to just a few, it often comes down to what kind of fit it will be for all of us.”

The Dayton Book Fair board handles grant-making a little differently than other foundations, requiring a year-long informal partnership with the beneficiaries. Organizations chosen are asked to promote the sale through a variety of means, they are encouraged to hold a book drive and required to volunteer at least 40 hours over the year.

Since 2015 the Foundation has made grants to 16 different organizations in the Dayton Community, giving away more than $130,000 over the last five years. The Dayton Book Fair is Ohio’s largest used book sale and each year rehomes about 40 tons of books, records, puzzles, and games.

“While the grant-making is an essential part of our existence, and we are delighted to be able to support so many exceptional Dayton-area non-profits, we have discovered that we have another remarkably important mission in providing a meaningful and purposeful venue where people can donate their beloved books,” Ms. Vonalt commented, noting that they collect books all year round at their office at 2181 Embury Park Rd as well as offering a free pick up service for those who need it and collaborating twice a year with all the Dayton area Grismer Tire Stores for book “round-ups” the last week of May and August.

Those donated books are then sorted, priced and packed for the sale held each year the second weekend in November at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds, and the proceeds from that sale used in making grants to community non-profit organizations working in the areas of arts, education, social welfare, literacy and community development.

ArtsDEEP Connects Schools and Artists

February 5, 2020 By Dayton Artist United

Culture Works, the united arts fund and arts service agency for the Dayton region, has launched an online portal to connect schools to the arts. Culture Works believes that creating and maintaining a vibrant and attractive community filled with quality arts brings both measurable and immeasurable value to the citizens in its service area. Dorie Watts, Manager of Strategic Initiatives, says “arts and culture reflect all the best and most beautiful parts of who we are, they enrich our lives. Culture Works wants to make sure that our youth have access to those riches.”

ArtsDEEP, a searchable online database, is how Culture Works is helping to bring the arts to area youth. The database, connects teachers to arts programming through a searchable directory. “The database is up and rolling, it’s all about getting the word out to the users now.” Watts says. “A database is only as good as the information it houses, and we want our database to be comprehensive. Culture Works is offering free user workshops for teachers and provider workshops for artists and arts organizations to make that happen.”

The next provider workshop is Thursday, February 20, 2020 from 6 PM – 7 PM at Wholly Grounds Coffeehouse, 825 Wayne Ave Dayton, Ohio 45410. Amy Williams, a local artist, and an owner of Wholly Grounds is a supporter of local arts programs. She hosts the monthly Artist United Gatherings and exhibits local artists work. “As soon as Culture Works called me about the workshop for providers, I wanted to help,” Williams said.  “Hosting the workshops helps me too. I want Wholly Grounds to be an art hub, a place where creative people feel inspired, a place where creative people share opportunities.  ArtsDEEP is a great opportunity for artists and art organizations to publish their programs. I wish we had an educational program to upload,” said Williams.  Provider workshops are open to arts groups, arts organizations and individual artists. ‘You don’t have to know everything about your programming to attend a workshop,” says Watts. “The workshop walks you through what the schools need to know. If you are thinking about a program you might like to offer, the workshop will help you decide whether your programming fits school parameters.”

The first providers began to upload programming in October. Jes McMillan of The Mosaic Institute was among the first to post programs. “I love the idea of a searchable arts database,” McMillan says, “I’ve been advocating for an online arts directory for a long time. I wasn’t thinking specifically about educational programs, but when I found out that Culture Works was offering a searchable education database, I jumped at the chance to add The Mosaic Institute.” The Mosaic Institute has offered educational programming for five years.  “I am excited about having another way of getting our programs out there,” McMillan said. “The user interface is straightforward and easy to use. I created a login and filled out my provider profile. Culture Works sent me a provider access code, and I started uploading programs.”

Amber Harris-Reed has specialized in bringing the history of powerful African American women to life through reenactment for over 35 years. “I  gave a performance for teachers to demonstrate the kind of programming the portal will house. I did Harriet Tubman,” Harris-Reed said. “The teachers were very excited when I told them that I offered different character portrayals.”   Harris-Reed has performed throughout Ohio and Indiana, and as far away as California. “I have lots of characters I can do, my goal is to teach students about these remarkable African American women, their lives, the times they lived in and their mark on history.”  Amber Harris-Reed’s provider page on is up on the ArtsDEEP portal, and offers details about her performances of Sojourner Truth, Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, and Coretta Scott King.

The Decoy Arts Center has also been uploading programming to the ArtsDEEP portal. “What I like about the ArtsDEEP platform is that it’s fully engaged in connecting schools with artists, art educators and art experiences to bring into the classroom,” says Kristin Bailey, program director at the Decoy Arts Center. “I believe it is especially important for outreach where art programs might not be available. ArtsDEEP can provide access to those looking to supplement.” Bailey says, “It’s a great tool for k-12 school programs.”

The database makes provider programming available to more than 50 school districts in Dayton and the surrounding areas. “In the Dayton area, we have a thriving arts community: an opera, a symphony, multiple professional dance companies, a fine arts museum, thriving theaters and many small arts organizations,” says Lisa Hanson, Executive Director of Culture Works, “and many of these organizations, and individual artists too, offer educational programming, outreach, and enrichment activities for free or at a greatly reduced fee, but teachers and the organizations that serve youth have limited resources, and limited time. It takes time to research what’s out there. This database not only shows available programs, but shows educators planning details like cost per student, curriculum areas covered and the grade levels that the programs best serve.”

The ArtsDEEP program was developed in collaboration with school districts, universities, teachers, administrators, parents, arts groups, art organizations and individual artists through-out the Miami Valley. As artists and arts advocates, Culture Works believes that art experiences will change the way our youth view the world, increase their happiness and foster creativity. “The goal is to increase the number of “touches” there are between the schools offered the platform and participating arts organizations, “ says Dorie Watts. “There is overwhelming evidence that the arts improve academic performance, lower the number of disciplinary disruptions, raise self-esteem and lower stress. Every time arts programming is added to a class curriculum, it’s a win.”

The ArtsDEEP,  the education exploration portal, is  provided by Culture Works through the generous support of The Dayton Foundation, the Mathile Family Foundation, Vectren/CenterPoint Energy Company, the Reynolds & Reynolds Associate Foundation, Lockheed Martin, and the Montgomery County Arts & Cultural District. If you are interested in ArtsDEEP portal workshops for users or providers, or if you have questions about the ArtsDeep portal, contact Dorie Watts at  [email protected]

The Dayton Dine Diner Divas (DDD) consists of 6 ladies…5 members of the Dayton Daily News Ten Top Women Class of 2013 (Kim Duncan, Penny Wolff  Lynda Hoffman, Frances McGee-Cromartie and Maureen Patterson…all retired & looking for daily adventures) plus they’ve adopted diva Joan Klepacz. As they dine their way across the Miami Valley, from time to time they’ll share their adventures here with us.

5 of the 6 DDD: Kim Duncan, Penny Wolff, Frances McGee-Cromartie, Joan Klepacz, Lynda Hoffman.

Another hidden gem discovered today by the Dive Diner Divas. How have we lived and/or worked so many years in North Dayton and not experienced this home cooking pile of deliciousness?!?!

Our original visit six months ago was unfortunately diverted due to tornado damage, but we were determined to give this local owned mom & pop diner a chance. So glad we did (10 thumbs up for their broasted chicken, cabbage rolls and chicken & dumplings!)

Sadly, the horrific damage from the Memorial Day tornadoes it’s still apparent everywhere in north Dayton. For those who live elsewhere, don’t forget or neighbors who are still suffering terribly. Give them a helping hand if you can.

ABOUT GOO GOO DOLLS:

Formed in Buffalo, NY during 1986 by John Rzeznik and Robby Takac, Goo Goo Dolls quietly broke records, contributed a string of staples to the American songbook, connected to millions of fans, and indelibly impacted popular music for three-plus decades. Beyond selling 12 million records worldwide, the group garnered four GRAMMY® Award nominations and seized a page in the history books by achieving 14 number one and Top 10 hits at Hot AC—“the most of any artist.” As a result, they hold the all-time radio record for “Most Top 10 Singles.” Among a string of hits, “Iris” clutched #1 on the Hot 100 for 18 straight weeks and would be named “#1 Top 40 Song of the Last 20 Years.” Thus far, A Boy Named Goo [1995] went double-platinum, Dizzy Up The Girl went quadruple-platinum, and Gutterflower [2002] and Let Love In [2006] both went gold as Something for the Rest of Us [2010] and Magnetic [2013] bowed in the Top 10 of the Billboard Top 200. 2016’s Boxes attracted the praise of People and Huffington Post as Noisey, Consequence of Sound, and more featured them. Their music has been covered by everyone from Taylor Swift to Leona Lewis. Among many accolades, John received the prestigious “Hal David Starlight Award” in 2008 as well.

Following a sold-out 2018 twentieth anniversary tour in celebration of Dizzy Up The Girl, Goo Goo Dolls wrote and recorded their twelfth full-length album, Miracle Pill [Warner Records]—ignited by the first single and title track “Miracle Pill” and kicking off a bold and bright new era in the process. Miracle Pill arrived on September 13th, 2019 via Warner Records.

Dayton at Work and Play: College HIll Comunity Church

February 4, 2020 By Bill Franz

Choir Director Jose Jones invited me to take photos at choir rehearsal at College Hill Community Church – PCUSA (1547 Philadelphia Drive in Dayton’s College Hill neighborhood).
I enjoyed meeting the people of this church which has a rich history of fostering racial unity in our community. During the 1970’s, when the racial mix of this neighborhood was changing, the church decided to have a fully integrated ministry. They had two pastors, one white and one black, to jointly service the congregation. The goal was to welcome everyone and to become a church that was a “Racial Rainbow.”

As red-lining and block-busting became common in the early 1970’s, real estate agents went door-to-door in NW Dayton trying to convince people to sell their homes. In response, members of College Hill Church went door-to-door too…encouraging their neighbors to stay. The church was also influential in achieving peaceful desegregation of the Dayton School System in 1976.

Their worship service is Sundays at 10:30 am and is bi-lingual (Spanish and English).

Neighborhood Leadership Institute Now Accepting Applications

February 3, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

NLICover2014The Neighborhood Leadership Institute (NLI) is an annual 14-week program that trains Dayton residents for current or future leadership opportunities in city communities. Workshops are held at various locations and presentations cover topics such as Dayton’s history; the role of City government, the criminal justice system and cultural diversity; skill-building components such as public speaking and small-group dynamics; and a bus tour of Dayton neighborhoods. Class members also complete field assignments to expand their knowledge of Dayton, City government and the community at large.

NLI offers the opportunity to meet and talk with government officials and other decision-makers. It encourages participants to develop a citywide perspective and establish a network of activists across the City.

Any adult residing or working in the city of Dayton may apply; however, each class is limited to
30 people.   There is no charge for participation. The program consists of 13 evening and/or Saturday sessions over a three-month period. Classroom and/or workshop sessions are held at various locations related to the session topic. Presenters include current neighborhood, business, and government leaders. Each participant must attend all sessions in order to be certified as having completed the program. In addition, outside field assignments are required.
This year’s deadline to apply is February 7. Download the application.  Direct questions to the Department of Planning and Community Development by calling 937-333-3670 or email to [email protected].
