Urban League Hires New Executive Director

February 9, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

The Urban League of Greater Southwestern Ohio has named Nikol Miller the newest member of its executive team. Nikol is a mission-driven lifelong public servant with immense experience in community outreach, public policy, fundraising, and media relations. She will begin her role as executive director of the Miami Valley Urban League on March 8, 2021. Helen Jones- Kelley, executive director of ADAMHS Board for Montgomery County and Urban League Board Trustee, said, “The Miami Valley Urban League Advisory Board is excited to welcome Nicole Miller as our new director! In addition to her remarkable contributions during her tenure at RTA, Nicole grew up in the Miami Valley and has fostered important relationships here that will allow her to hit the ground running in taking the MVUL in its service to this community to the next level.”

She began her career as a Legislative Aide in the Dayton City Commission. She worked on projects to incentivize small business development in the Wright-Dunbar and Tech Town in the early 2000s. In 2004, she went to Chicago and worked in development for the Metropolitan Planning Council, a public policy and issue advocacy organization that focused on issues around sensible growth primarily related to transportation, affordable housing, and land use.

At the start of the 2010 Census, she was brought on to handle the Chicago Region’s media relations and then promoted to the Regional Director’s Special Assistant, working on the decennial outreach component projects. Ms. Miller’s other Census-related experiences after 2010 include: supervising the data collection for the ambulatory care surveys, training organizations and people on how to access census data from American Factfinder, and eventually working with a team of consultants to develop the national outreach plan for the 2020 Census.

Nikole served as Chief of Staff for Chicago’s 7th Ward Alderman, Natashia Holmes. In this role, she was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the office and introduced new community involvement initiatives to promote housing and economic development and guide decisions for community improvement.

In 2016, the Greater Dayton RTA hired Nikol as community relations manager. She was responsible for maintaining RTA’s community relations program by developing partnerships with stakeholders and community groups to advocate for RTA interests while fostering communication throughout the agency’s footprint.

Nikol Miller is a graduate of Miami University. She is a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church. She serves on the boards for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Greater Edgemont Community Coalition, Fiver Rivers Health Center Edgemont Campus Board, African American Community Fund Board, City of Dayton’s Community and Neighborhood Development Advisory Board, and OnMain Advisory Board. Nikol resides in Dayton’s Sunnyview-Catalpa neighborhood with her dog, Neo, and is a seven-year cancer survivor.

The mission of The Urban League is to transform generations by promoting personal empowerment and economic self- sufficiency. The Urban League combines two divisions: Greater Cincinnati Urban League and the Miami Valley Urban League. Together, we serve 12 counties from Northern Kentucky to Dayton, Ohio. Visit their  website for more information.

Local Volunteer Spreading Lasagna Love

February 9, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

Lasagna Love was started at the beginning of the pandemic, when the founder was looking for a way to help moms in her community. She and her toddler started making and delivering meals to families in the neighborhood who were struggling, whether that struggle was financial, emotional, or simply a feeling of overwhelm.

Lasagna Love has since grown into a national movement, with thousands of people all cooking and delivering meals to families in their communities. What they do is simple: feed families, spread kindness, and strengthen communities. Their mission is not only to help address the incredible rise in food insecurity among families, but also to provide a simple act of love and kindness during a time full of uncertainty and stress. In just under eight months, Lasagna Love has spread across 47 states in America.

I first heard about this program when my friend and local volunteer extraordinaire Laura Rea posted her experience as a first time Lasagna Mamma.

“Lasagna Love is a nationwide organization that pairs lasagna makers with those in their neighborhood who could use a food hug. Gift a meal, or get a meal, the website makes it easy. Two families today, and one more delivery tomorrow. Contactless delivery – drop, text, and go!”

Laura shared “I ended up making 5 pans – 3 to deliver to my matched families, one for home, and one to a friend who recently lost his wife and is still learning to cook. Although I know it’s not about me, I was giddy after doing the drop offs – hot lasagna, at dinner time, to families who needed a little lasagna love!”

She went on to explain how easy it was to sign up and make a difference.  The website allows you to sign up to bake lasagna, request a meal or even sponsor a meal.  Laura  explained, “I am retired, so I offered to deliver baked, and hot from the oven at dinner time! Some do refrigerate-heat at home. Very flexible, and the maker works with the recipient to figure out what works best!”
The founder of Lasagna Love explains the program here:
I’m now motivated to share some lasagna, how about you?

RFP for Artwork for the New Burkhardt Branch Library

February 9, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

The Dayton Metro Library and The Dayton Art Institute seek to commission site-specific art installations for the new Burkhardt Branch Library in Dayton. Proposals will be accepted through April 2, and the commissions will be announced on April 16. Detailed information about this Request for Proposals can be found at:DaytonMetroLibrary.org/works/artists.

ReImagining Works is a partnership between the Library and the DAI to acquire original artwork for each of the Dayton Metro Library’s new or renovated locations. Artists are invited to propose newly created artworks conceived in response to three artworks from the DAI’s permanent collection. These inspiration pieces were chosen by public vote, particularly Burkhardt Branch Library patrons. Artists may develop a response to one or all artworks.

The inspiration pieces are Joy of the Waters, a bronze sculpture by Harriet Whitney Frishmuth; Flying Pup King, an acrylic painting on canvas by Yoshimoto Nara; andVendedoras De Frutas, an oil on canvas painting by Alfredo Ramos Martinez.

The newly designed 17,800 square foot Burkhardt Branch Library will be located at the corner of Burkhardt and Shedborne Avenues in east Dayton. Proposed artworks should reflect the distinctive personality of this location; resonate with people of all ages and backgrounds; inspire collaboration, learning and creativity; and contribute to an inviting, engaging and stimulating environment.

From the proposals received, the DML ReImagining Works Committee will select the winning artists, who will meet with DML and DAI staff, architects, and construction representatives to confirm plans for the commission. The artists will be required to sign a Letter of Agreement by May 2021, and complete their work by December 2021.

Susan Anable is The Dayton Art Institute’s project manager for ReImagining Works. Due to safety considerations, in-person informational meetings will not be held. Instead, artists may email Susan at [email protected] with questions about the project or the art locations. Additionally, Susan will schedule individual phone calls with artists. To schedule a phone consultation, email [email protected].

For more information on the RFP, visit DaytonMetroLibrary.org/works/artists. ReImagining Works is made possible by an anonymous bequest. More information about the project, including photos of installations at completed Libraries, can be found atDaytonMetroLibrary.org/Works.

CJ Chan Celebrates 5th Anniversary with IWatch Giveaway

February 7, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

CJ Chan owners

Hi Chan and  Juan, the husband and wife team that run the Moraine location of CJ Chan are celebrating the locations 5th anniversary this week by hosting a give away for their loyal customers.  Starting Monday they will give away an Apple watch a day for five days.   Customers that like and share a graphic on Facebook will be entered in the drawing and each day there will be a winner posted, who can come to the restaurant to claim their watch.

After the success of the original location on Wilmington Ave, they wanted to build the Moraine location with a bigger kitchen and make it a bit more upscale. Hi shared with us there is a large Chinese population near the Alex Bell restaurant and they feel very thankful for the support they have received at both locations.  His brother runs the Wilmington spot and he admits he’s the better cook, while he claims to be the better businessman.

Like and share this image on DaytonDining Facebook page.

Chan says he learned to cook at his father’s side in Hong Kong, where he ran a five star restaurant.  He came to the US in 2002 to have more freedom. He started working at Dragon City in Dayton, eventually bought it and eventually sold it.  They opened CJ Chan to serve sushi and a wide variety of Chinese and Japanese dishes for dine-in and carryout.

Both husband and wife are quick to share the key to their success with their staff, who each received an apple watch as a thank you for their hard work during the first five years!

As we wrapped up our discussion, they even hinted their may be a 3rd restaurant in their future, that may be more Japanese in style.

Please include your first and last name, where you are from, your question for Dwight, and your song request.

IMPORTANT INFO:

Stuart’s Opera House, like all performance venues, have been shuttered since March of 2020. The only way we can all safely get the live performance industry back is if everyone agrees to adhere to strict safety protocol. We greatly appreciate your respect for and support of the following guidelines.

This is a socially distanced event that will take place indoors in our historic theater. You should enter with the guest(s) you intend to sit with for the event. A nose and mouth covering is required to be properly worn for all of those in attendance. No one will be allowed entry without a face covering. Stuart’s Opera House will have face coverings available for guests who need one. The mask must be worn at all times, including in the Theater and the Grand Lobby. If you are taking a drink, the mask may be removed to do so, but must immediately be put back on after you are done taking the drink.

Guests are encouraged to purchase tickets in pods. Pods are a small group of people who agree to sit together and socialize with one another exclusively. These are the people who you have been regularly exposed to throughout the pandemic. Each group of seats will be spaced at least 6 feet apart in the theater. We ask that if you purchase your tickets in a pod, that you arrive with the other members of your pod, so you can be seated at the same time.

Upon entry, each guest will be asked to sign a form indicating that they have not experienced any symptoms of COVID-19 prior to the show. If guests have experienced symptoms within 48 hours of the show, they are not permitted to attend the show. Please call Stuart’s Opera House and we will issue you a refund for your ticket(s).

Because of the current pandemic, we are asking audience members to stay in their seats the entire show. We will not have our usual bar service, but we will provide a complimentary bottle of water for every attendee.

Dwight Icenhower will perform at Stuart’s Opera House in Nelsonville, Ohio on Saturday, March 13
th at 1:30pm and 6:00pm. The 6:00pm show will also be livestreamed. Tickets to either live show are $50 each. Partners for the Environment launches fundraising campaign

February 3, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

Twelve groups from across the region are partnering to raise funds to continue their crucial missions of protecting and preserving our vital natural resources.

Today, more than ever, help is needed to support the work to preserve and protect the green spaces we love. In the midst of a global pandemic, our parks, forests, wetlands, hiking trails, rivers and streams are there for us. They give us a place of peace, discovery, joy and rejuvenation for our physical and mental wellbeing. And we need them to be there for us in the future. We need clean air to breathe, clean water to drink, and healthy soils to grow our food.

For the month of February, the Gifts That Grow campaign unites local and regional not-for-profit groups to help raise awareness and needed funds to continue their work. The campaign is a collaboration managed by the Partners for the Environment including:

    • Aullwood Audubon Center and Farm
    • Beaver Creek Wetlands Association
    • B-W Greenway Community Land Trust
    • Brukner Nature Center
    • Central State University

    • Glen Helen Association
    • Learning Tree Farm
    • Little Miami River Watershed Network
    • Marianist Environmental Education Center

LITTLE FISH, A GLITCH IN THE MATRIX and Next “Director Spotlight!”

February 3, 2021 By Jonathan McNeal

We have two new films opening this week. The first is LITTLE FISH – a film currently rated “100% Fresh” that indieWire calls “a creative, inventive romance for a broken time.” In addition, we’ve booked a few screenings of a film that just premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last week – A GLITCH IN THE MATRIX.

Next week will be pretty special. In addition to MINARI (a film that will almost certainly be nominated for “Best Picture”), we will have another round of retrospective titles from from a brilliant filmmaker. This time, we’re going to take a look at 3 classics from the prolific Spike Lee – DO THE RIGHT THING (1989), MO’ BETTER BLUES (1990) and CROOKLYN (1994). More details soon!
In our Virtual Cinema, we also have 2 new films this week. M.C. ESCHER: JOURNEY TO INFINITY has drawn a lot of interest on our social media platforms, and COWBOYS is a beloved film that has been making the rounds on the festival circuit.
NEW IN-PERSON ENGAGEMENTS
Synopsis for LITTLE FISH: This little gem is being heralded as one of the best sci-fi indie films of the last decade. “LITTLE FISH, the fourth feature film from director Chad Hartigan, is a romance set in a near-future Seattle teetering on the brink of calamity. Starring Olivia Cooke, Jack O’Connell, Soko and Raul Castillo, the film opens in the midst of a global epidemic: Neuroinflammatory Affliction, a sever and rapid Alzheimer’s-like condition in which people’s memories disappear. Couple Jude Williams and Emma Ryerson are grappling with the realities of NIA, interspersed with glimpses from the past as the two meet and their relationship blooms. But as NIA’s grip on society tightens, blurring the lines between the past and the present, it becomes more and more difficult to know what’s true and what’s false.” Click the image below to watch the film’s trailer.
Synopsis for A GLITCH IN THE MATRIX: Direct on the heels of its Sundance Premiere, A GLITCH IN THE MATRIX will screen for a few special shows starting Feb. 5. “What if we are living in a simulation, and the world as we know it is not real? To tackle this mind-bending idea, acclaimed filmmaker Rodney Asher (ROOM 237, THE NIGHTMARE) uses a noted speech from Philip K. Dick to dive down the rabbit hole of science, philosophy, and conspiracy theory. Leaving no stone unturned in exploring the unprovable, the film uses contemporary cultural touchstones like THE MATRIX, interviews with real people shrouded in digital avatars, and a wide array of voices, expert and amateur alike. If simulation theory is not science fiction but fact, and life is a video game being played by some unknowable entity, then who are we, really? A GLITCH IN THE MATRIX attempts to find out.” (Magnolia Pictures) Click the image below to watch the film’s trailer.
Synopsis for MINARI: Winner of the 2020 Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, we’re excited to open MINARI – a certain contender for “Best Picture” this year. We will have a preview screening on Thursday, Feb. 11 at 7:15…then it will open on a full schedule on Feb. 12. “A tender and sweeping story about what roots us, Minari follows a Korean-American family that moves to a tiny Arkansas farm in search of their own American Dream. The family home changes completely with the arrival of their sly, foul-mouthed, but incredibly loving grandmother. Amidst the instability and challenges of this new life in the rugged Ozarks, Minari shows the undeniable resilience of family and what really makes a home.” (A24) Click the image below to watch the film’s trailer.
NEW IN OUR VIRTUAL CINEMA:
Synopsis for COWBOYS: Available Starting Feb. 5! “In Montana, a father tries to liberate his young transgender son by taking him to Canada, but as a frustrated female detective spearheads an investigation, she discovers that the child’s family situation is more complicated than she thought.” Starring Steve Zahn & Jillian Bell and introducing Sasha Knight. This film is available to watch on your computer or mobile device. It is also available to watch via Chromecast. For help regarding accessing this title, please visit the Samuel Goldwyn VHX Help Page HERE. Click the image below to watch the trailer and gain 72 hour access to the film for $12.
Synopsis for M.C. ESCHER: JOURNEY TO INFINITY: Available Starting Feb. 5! “M.C. Escher: Journey To Infinity is the story of world famous Dutch graphic artist M.C Escher (1898-1972). Equal parts history, psychology, and psychedelia, Robin Lutz’s entertaining, eye-opening portrait gives us the man through his own words and images: diary musings, excerpts from lectures, correspondence and more are voiced by British actor Stephen Fry, while Escher’s woodcuts, lithographs, and other print works appear in both original and playfully altered form. Two of his sons, George (92) and Jan (80), reminisce about their parents while musician Graham Nash (Crosby, Stills & Nash) talks about Escher’s rediscovery in the 1970s. The film looks at Escher’s legacy: one can see tributes to his work in movies, in fiction, on posters, on tattoos, and elsewhere throughout our culture; indeed, few fine artists of the 20th century can lay claim to such popular appeal.”
This film can be viewed on your computer or mobile device. You can also watch via your TV (when you download the Kino Now app on Apple TV, Roku, or Amazon TV/Stick). Additional instructions can be found on the film’s landing page…just click the picture below to watch the trailer and reserve access to the film for $12.
CONTINUING IN OUR VIRTUAL CINEMA:
Synopsis for RAMS: “Brothers Colin and Les have been fighting for decades. Both are award-winning sheep farmers but when disaster strikes and disease threatens their flocks, will they be able to work together to save their sheep, their legacy, and their community?” This 2020 remake of the 2015 Icelandic film stars Sam Neil, Michael Caton and Miranda Richardson. This film is available to watch on your computer or mobile device. It is also available to watch via Chromecast. For help regarding accessing this title, please visit the Samuel Goldwyn VHX Help Page HERE. Click the image below to watch the trailer and gain 72 hour access to the film for $12.
To read more about all the films that are still available in our Virtual Cinema, please visit our WEBSITE. Here’s a LINK with a video I made about how Virtual Cinema works.
Would you like to know what titles we have planned for our virtual cinema? (Click any title to watch that film’s trailer.) Next week, we’ll make A GLITCH IN THE MATRIX available virtually and we’ll open TWO OF US – a lovely film that is France’s submission for “Best Foreign Film” this year. Later in February, we’ll have a new documentary about Ruth Bader Ginsburg (in her own words) – simply titled RUTH as well as a film with Spike Lee as executive producer – SON OF THE SOUTH. On March 5, we’ll bring a film that I know many design folks will adore – GUSTAV STICKLEY: AMERICAN CRAFTSMAN. More titles are on the way…stay tuned!

Bryan’s Quest for the Perfect Superbowl Menu

February 2, 2021 By Bryan Suddith

Superbowl Sunday is like Thanksgiving for me.  I love to cook for a holiday and the Superbowl is one of the top 5 foodie holidays for me. Instead of an entree and sides, its a day dedicated to small bites and appetizers.

I got a note today from Brock Mastersons with their Superbowl Party pack. They listed all their favorites bundled up for one price. Meatballs, stuffed mushrooms, veggie tray, charcuterie, mac and cheese and a bacon wrapped shrimp app. Feeds 6 fans and all for less than $90.00

That has me thinking. This Sunday it’s just me and the missus and she hates when I call her the missus, how would I spend $90 for the perfect Superbowl meal.

This is how I would roll:

Wings from Lock 27 Centerville
I’ve written about these and declared them the best in Dayton. My favorite in Dayton. Smoked. Deep fried. Peach habanero sauce. Ridiculously perfect. $14

Spinach Crab Dip from Christopher’s in Kettering
This Spin dip is next level. Spinach artichoke dip, claw crabmeat and baked, served with fried naan bread chips. $9

Chips and Dip.  From the Trolley Stop in the Oregon District
Maybe COVID has me jonesing for patio time and beer at Trolley at sunset on warm summer’s evening. Or that dip is just a wonder of culinary creativity. Either way. Its on the menu along with their nacho’s. The chorizo and queso blanco, not the veggie kind. $5.5 for Mike Sell’s and dip, $8.5 for the Macho Nachos.

So we’ve knocked out wings and plenty of dips and chips and we are only $38 dollars in.

Adding a pizza to this menu would be gluttonous, but what if one of our college kids showed up with a friend? Be prepared, that’s the Boy Scout way. So I’d go with Junior’s Pizza on Wilmington Pike in Kettering.  His pizza is a Dayton style, but heftier like Ron’s in Miamisburg or Joe’s in Riverside. I keep it classy, Pepperoni and extra cheese.
A medium two topping only sets you back $15, so add the fried pickles. They can’t be beat for $6.50 more.

We are at $60 and the only thing missing are beverages and some veggies.

Kettering’s Eudora Brewing Company is how we wrap this up.
I like the Bees Knees. Its kinda hoppy. Not too strong and has a slight sweet finish and I like that. A growler for two, the hummus plate and the fabulous Grape and Goat salad comes in at about $30.

That’s a good day and a menu to please all ages, all palates and we got some veggies in there too.

Dayton Lost An Icon- Voltzy Passed Away

February 1, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

VOLTZY, aka Rick Volz, operated a carry out hamburger joint in Moraine that was as well known for the owner’s sarcastic jabs as it was for the best cheeseburgers in town. Rick, who was a Ft. Wayne native, learned the business from his grandfather working at his shop growing up. He’d run a shop in the Dayton area for over 30 years, in 1988 he started serving burgers out of a 12 foot trailer.  he trailer grew to 16 ft then 24 ft, and in 2013 he built the Root Beer Stand on 4668 Springboro Pike.

He ground his beef fresh daily and during soup season he made a batch fresh each day.  His most popular cabbage roll soup was a perfect cross of spicy, sweet, cabbage and mix of veggies and crumbled meat. Voltzy claimed he served up over 800 gallons of soup each winter.

One of the joys of going to Voltzy’s was getting a sarcastic greeting from Voltzy.  Known for his one liners, verbal jabs, complaints, zingers and humor, it was truly just his way of making you feel welcome.

Over the past several years Voltzy has had some health issues, and in 2017 had to have 3 toes amputated, which caused his to shut down the business for a bit.  But he rallied and reopened, doubling up on the jabs, to make up for the time he missed.  But his health never quite rebounded, a few more issues and thenearlier this year his leg was amputated just under his knee. And today Voltzy took his last breath at Kettering Hospital, while his surrogate daughter Sammy held his hand.

Voltzy at the Grill

His social media sight quickly filled with tributes:

“I met VOLTZY aka Rick Volz at the Oktoberfest Dayton about 10 years ago. Ever since then he was good friend. After the grills turned off, and the spotlight was down, he was a humble, guy who had a tough road. He was a mans man, and absolutely hilarious.”  -Steve Milano, aka The Big Ragu, of Food Adventures, which ran for years on DMM

“Such sad news. The world just lost one hell of a person! Rest in Peace Buddy! When I see you again, you can ask me “I’ve been here for xxx long…..where the hell you been?”  – Lee Edwards

“The man was a Dayton institution. I will say Voltzy’s was my favorite place to go to get lunch, and that’s as much about Rick, if not more, than the wonderful food he made.”  – Scott Beckerman

“The world just lost a great one… Man I’ll miss his humor, passion and that smile he’d flash as he got ya with a good one liner.” – Kyle Mullins

“He was one of a kind and I always loved hearing him interact with his friends and customers. I’m glad he is no longer suffering, but he will be greatly missed throughout this community.” – Jennine Elizabeth

Voltzy- we’ll miss you!
