Oregon District Natural Hair Salon Adds New Stylist

March 30, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

Local natural hair salon & boutique, Puff Apothecary’s founder and owner, Bethany Ramsey, has announced the addition of a new stylist, Asha Parson as the Salon Coordinator. Parson will join the team of three. With the addition of Parson, Puff Apothecary will double their availability to better serve the growing demand for natural hair services. Parson specializes in locs, braiding and other protective styling.

Asha Parson received her cosmetology license in 2012. “As the oldest of five, I developed a passion for doing hair when I started helping my mother with my sibling’s hair” explained Parson.

Puff Apothecary meets clients wherever they are in their natural hair journey and the owner found her lane in natural hair after doing the big chop 14 years ago. Their stylists focus on servicing and caring for natural hair by detangling, cleansing and moisturizing hair with plant-based products from Black owned businesses they wholesale and also sell in their boutique. Their stylists use techniques that include defining curls and they offer services for locs and braids.

“People come to us because we specialize in natural hair but also because we offer a special experience. We are knowledgeable, personable and prioritize having a space where people can have a self-care moment. I think now more than ever people want to connect with someone they can trust and also do something nice for themselves. We’ve been fortunate we can provide both for our clients.” said Ramsey

Puff Apothecary is a natural hair salon and boutique that was started in 2017 as a retail boutique only. Bethany Ramsey, the founder and owner, decided to add a salon and in 2019 she secured and renovated 605 E 5th St in the Oregon District. Since then, their staff has weathered the storm of Dayton’s tumultuous 2019 and now through the pandemic.

Beyond expanding their team, Puff Apothecary has also added Youth services specifically designed for families seeking help supporting their child’s natural hair. These services give children an opportunity to be in a safe space where they can grow their confidence about their natural hair and gain independence on learning to do their own hair into adolescence.

“We have families new to caring for natural hair. Families from different cultural backgrounds (adoptive or foster) who have little to no education on caring for and styling natural hair. We offer enough time that parents and caregivers can engage with us and ask questions. And we have a semi-private space that can be comfortable for young people.” says Jacqui Martin, Puff Apothecary’s Advanced Cosmetologist.

“We’re excited to be growing and that Asha has joined the Puff team. She and our entire staff enjoys and deeply cares about helping others see the beauty in their natural hair.”

For those interested in booking, first time clients should schedule a consultation at www.puffapothecary.com/book.

In-person Music Returning To Stuart’s Opera House

March 29, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

Old Seed will play Stuart’s Opera House on Thursday, April 1, 2021 at 7:30pm (both in-person and livestream options available)! Old Seed is Zeke Hutchison, Matt McElroy, and Joe Burdock having a fun time playing tunes from the region and remembering players who played the music in the past. They are all neighbors in the western part of Athens County, Ohio.

Per health department recommendations, we are permitted to host 100 guests for this live show. Guests will be admitted to the theater on a first come, first served basis. In addition to the live, in-person performances, we will also be livestreaming this show at stuartsoperahouse.org. Both the in-person show and the livestream will be available to watch free of charge at stuartsoperahouse.org, but donations to Stuart’s Opera House are welcomed and encouraged.

Zeke (Zekey) Hutchison has been playing the mandolin since he was a kid. Grandson of Ohio fiddler John W. Hutchison (the Seed) and son of banjo player Robert (Zeke) Hutchison.

Matthew McElroy over the last couple of decades has performed, taught & recorded across the United States playing either the guitar, the fiddle or the 5 string banjo. When he is not doing whatever he was doing he is doing something else while always spinning at 78 rpm.

Joe Burdock started busking at age 16 traveling and playing all over, while the traveling made place, people, and the musical connection a small obsession. He now is a dance caller, multi instrumentalist, and mild homesteader.

IMPORTANT INFO:

Stuart’s Opera House, like all performance venues, have been shuttered since March of 2020. The only way we can all safely get the live performance industry back is if everyone agrees to adhere to strict safety protocol. We greatly appreciate your respect for and support of the following guidelines.

This is a socially distanced event that will take place indoors in our historic theater. You should enter with the guest(s) you intend to sit with for the event. A nose and mouth covering is required to be properly worn for all of those in attendance. No one will be allowed entry without a face covering. Stuart’s Opera House will have face coverings available for guests who need one. The mask must be worn at all times, including in the Theater and the Grand Lobby. If you are taking a drink, the mask may be removed to do so, but must immediately be put back on after you are done taking the drink.

Food Truck Spotlight: Hunger Paynes

March 26, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

Andrew Payne got started cooking at 15 years old at the Officer’s Club at WPAFB.  After that he moved on to cooking at Quaker Steak and Lube and Cracker Barrel.  He went to Culinary School at Hocking College and worked as a kitchen manager at a fine dining restaurant until he graduated top of his class.  He came back to Dayton in 2008, worked at NCR Country Club and numerous hotels until he landed the Sous Chef position at the Dayton Convention Center.  Within a few years he moved up to Executive Chef at both the Nutter Center and the Convention Center.

When asked about what inspired him to start a food tuck he told us, “I wanted the freedom to cook the dishes I wanted to cook and personally see the gratification from my customers instead of sitting back in the kitchen somewhere.  I wanted to create a truck where I could offer many different types of cuisine in a way that most people aren’t used to seeing while keeping a central theme, serving Croquettes checked all the boxes,” and thus in June of 2013 be launched  Hunger Paynes.

Andres tell us that his best seller is the Smoked Gouda Mac and Cheese with  Garlic Sour Cream sauce and Green Onions (most people add his Aged Cheddar Cheese sauce and Bacon too).
The second best seller is probably his Reuben Croquette. They also offer cajun salmon, chipotle arancini and buffalo chicken croquettes, as well as an apple chicken wrap, buffalo chicken blt wrap, pretzel bites and beef sliders. You can also pick up some homemade chips and pork rinds, or spurge a little on the black truffle french fries.
Andrew is especially proud to share that he make everything from scratch.  “All of our sauces are one of kind, we make our Pretzel Bites from scratch using an early 18th Century recipe, we cut and fry our signature Potato Chips, and we utilize all raw ingredients in our Croquettes.  We are also certified by the United States Department of Agriculture and we strive to serve one of kind dishes with great customer service.”  As a classically trained Chef, he’s also a great caterer for your next special event. They offer catering for small parties, corporate events, and weddings up to 250 people. You can find a full catering menu available on their website.

Where to find Hunger Paynes:

March 26 – Carriage Trails (neighborhood), 5pm-7pm 9403 Lakeside St, Tipp City, OH 45371
March 27 – Mother Stewart’s Brewing Co, 4pm-8pm 102 W Columbia St, Springfield, OH 45504

Four Cycling Itineraries to Inspire Your Next Pedaling Adventure

March 26, 2021 By GreatMiamiRiverway

Here in the Great Miami Riverway, we are home to the nation’s largest paved trail network. With over 340+ miles to explore, where will you begin? Here are 4 different itineraries to get you started. These itineraries range from 5 miles to 96 miles long and have something for every ability.

Spokes and Strokes Public Art Ride – 5 miles

Starting at Rentschler Forest MetroPark in Butler County,  take the Great Miami River Recreational Trail to the Fitton Center for Creative Arts (5.64 miles). Explore the Center and take a class – or just be inspired by those who have already created their masterpieces. If you’re up for continuing your journey, ride through the city and enjoy the multiple murals and sculptures scattered throughout downtown Hamilton. On your way down 2nd Street, lock your bike to one of the city’s many sculptural bike racks. The one next to Renaissance Fine Art Supplies looks like a paper airplane. Once you’ve done that, walk down High St. to the Alexander Hamilton sculpture and enjoy boutique shopping. Once you’re riding again, make sure to look backwards at the city’s beautiful mural as you approach the Greater Hamilton Chamber of Commerce. You’ll wind through Marcum Park, enjoy a splash pad, and end your ride at Municipal Brew Works* (and another sculptural bike rack).

Wheels to Wings Aviation Ride – 20 miles

If you are looking for amazing aviation history, this is the route for you. From WACO Air Museum in Troy to the Wright Cycle Company and Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park (20 miles), this route on the Great Miami River Recreational Trail stretches through beautiful countryside and under large shade trees. Before you head back north on your return trip, make sure to stop for a bite to eat at Texas Beef and Cattle Company located just across the street from the National Historical Park.

Pedals and Pals Ride* – 10 miles

Whether it’s through a craft brew or boutique shopping, this ride is all about our local culture. Visit Miamisburg’s historic Main Street for boutique shopping and then take a ride over to the Second Street Brewery District*. You’ll notice many stores with Bicycle Friendly designations. After that, hop on the Great Miami River Recreational Trail at Riverfront Park and ride to Carillon Historical Park in Dayton (10.59 miles). Eat at Culp’s Café or enjoy a refreshing cold drink at the only brewery located in a museum. Learn about the region’s history and climb the Brethren Tower before heading back south. Keep your eye out for eagles soaring overhead!

Weekend Century Ride – 96 miles

Here is a ride for cyclists ready for a century challenge. Each length of this trip is 96 miles long and takes you through historic downtowns while you meander through forests along the Great Miami River. We recommend you stop and rest at Rotary Park in Hamilton, spend a few hours exploring in the Dayton Art Institute, and definitely grab a piece of pie at The Spot in Sidney. If you are looking to spend the night before you head back to Hamilton, visit the Riverway’s ‘places to stay’ page for suggestions.  Most of this route is located on the Great Miami River Recreational Trail.

*Please remember that cycling under the influence is a criminal offense. Please cycle and drink responsibly!

Wright State University Theatre will present its first streaming musical production of the year, “The Theory of Relativity,” March 26-28.

Audiences can purchase tickets to watch “The Theory of Relativity” at showtix4u.com/event-details/49156. The musical will be available on-demand from 7 p.m. on Friday, March 26, to 11:45 p.m. on Sunday, March 28.

“The Theory of Relativity” features music and lyrics by Drama Desk Award nominees Neil Bartram and Brian Hill.

Through a collection of witty and moving songs, scenes and monologues, “The Theory of Relativity” introduces a group of college students experiencing their first independence and the joys and heartbreaks, the liaisons and losses, the inevitability and the wonder of human connection that comes with it.

Wright State’s production is directed by Greg Hellems, head of the Musical Theatre program, and musical directed by R. Wade Russo, instructor of musical theatre.

“The show is unapologetically about recognizing the need for human relationships and the experience of making and losing those interactions,” Hellems said. “The lyrics have taken on a whole new meaning now that many of those connections have been disrupted by the real obstacles presented by COVID-19.”

“The Theory of Relativity” is Wright State Theatre’s first filmed musical. Hellems said shooting the film has been a rewarding new challenge.

“Working without a film crew, the cast and production team have explored the medium of film in the most accessible of ways, our iPhones,” he said.

The collaborative filming process has included students, alumni and staff working together across the Dayton Campus to create art in the midst of the pandemic.

“For everyone working on this production, this was our first chance to be back in rehearsal and in performance since March of 2020,” Hellems said. “I was so moved the first night the cast sang together live, I was teary-eyed. After a year of waiting, having a chance to make art again has been joyful.”

The cast “The Theory of Relativity” features Tommy Cole (Oliver), Jonathan Crawford (Ryan), Austin Gladstone (Adam), Spencer Hall (Anthony 1), Kevin Lausche (Anthony 2), Ben Ohnemus (Mike 1), Nick Salazar (Mike 2), Jake Siwek (Paul), Amanda Astorga (Catherine 1), Nora DeGreen (Jenny), Lauren Eifert (Catherine 2), Tassy Kirbas (Sara), Eliana Taub (Mira), Delaney O’Toole (Amy), Molly Seybert (Caroline) and Ana Smith (Julie) with Tanner Gleeson and Alex Tischer (Male Swings) and Maggie Musco and Elisabeth Mies (Female Swings).

The production staff includes David J. Castellano, production manager/location manager; Katherine Rodriguez, assistant to the director; Aaron Poland, co-sound designer; Kevin Nedberg, technical director; John Lavarnway, props master; props artisans Julia Antoine, Greg Davis, Anna Hunter, Mariana Gonzalez and Murphy Vanbalen; Carly Kimmins, costume shop manager; Emmy Goerling, costumer; and Grace Randall and Lara Sagraves, sound technicians.

Angel Blue: Opera Star Recital Live or Streaming

March 23, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

Dayton Opera is thrilled to celebrate its 60th Anniversary with an Opera Star Recital featuring the sensational soprano, Angel Blue. This recital will also celebrate a special 25th anniversary of Artistic Director Thomas Bankston’s leadership of Dayton Opera.

Acclaimed for the beauty of her voice and her stunning stage presence, Angel Blue is quickly rising to the top of her profession. Placido Domingo has described the versatile soprano as “the next Leontyne Price,” and critics speak enthusiastically of her shining, agile upper register and “smoky” middle register.

An opera star in high demand worldwide, Angel Blue has performed in over 35 countries in the last six years, including appearances with the Berlin Philharmonic, Israeli Philharmonic, Teatro alla Scala, Vienna Stadtsoper, Dresden Semperoper, London Philharmonic Orchestra, and San Francisco Opera. Ms. Blue made her Royal Albert Hall debut as a featured guest at the “Classic FM Live” concert in April 2015. She is a regular host/presenter for the BBC Proms and appears frequently on BBC television. Last season, she performed the lead role of Bess in the critically acclaimed and Grammy Award-winning production of the Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess at The Metropolitan Opera.

DAI Announces New At-Home Tasting Event!

March 23, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

The Dayton Art Institute (DAI) has announced a new at-home tasting event, Pop, Fizz, Clink!, taking place on May 1.

Featuring sparkling wines, beers, hard seltzers and special surprises in a commemorative Party Pack, this online fundraiser takes the place of the popular Bourbon & Bubbles tasting event, which will not be held in 2021 due to the pandemic.

“While we are eager to welcome everyone back to in-person events at the museum, we felt it would be best to take a safe and cautious approach this spring,” said Dayton Art Institute Director & CEO Michael R. Roediger. “Building on the success of last year’s Virtual Oktoberfest fundraiser, our team has created what promises to be a unique and fun at-home event. You won’t want to miss this chance to sample some unique beverages and join us for an exclusive online party.”

Pop, Fizz, Clink! Party Packs are on sale now  at www.daytonartinstitute.org/popfizzclink.

They include three bottles of wine, two beer selections and two specialty hard seltzers, plus special treats and access to an exclusive online party taking place on May 1. Upgraded VIP Party Packs are also available and include additional treats and gourmet goodies!

Party Packs are priced at $90 for museum members and $100 for non-members. Each Party Pack includes: Campo Viejo cava, Yulupa sparkling and Chole prosecco; New Belgium Dominga Mimosa Sour and Deschutes Obsidian Stout; Press Seltzer and Vizzy Lemonade; one bag of turtle pecan sea salt gourmet popcorn from the American Classic Snack Company; and access to the online party on May 1.

Upgraded VIP Party Packs are priced at $140 for museum members and $150 for non-members. In addition to the items included in the Party Pack, the VIP upgrade includes: a six-piece chocolate box from Winan’s Chocolates + Coffee; an additional bag of bourbon beer cheese gourmet popcorn from the American Classic Snack Company; and two cupcakes in a jar from Twist Cupcakery, which was recently named best cupcakes in the state by MSN and East This Not That.

“The exclusive online party will include music, beer and wine tasting presentations, and many other surprises,” Roediger said. “And of course, it only makes sense to include a ‘virtual tour’ of POP Art in the museum’s collection, presented by our own Chief Curator and Director of Education, Dr. Jerry Smith. The tour will serve as a great tie-in to our upcoming Special Exhibition, Changing Times: Art of the 1960s, which opens later in May.”

Party Packs are only available for a very limited time and must be purchased in advance via the DAI website. Sales end April 14, with pickup taking place Saturday, May 1, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. This is a pickup-only event; Party Packs cannot be shipped. The DAI will announce additional details about Party Pack pickup later in April. The online party begins at 7 p.m. on May 1.

Pop, Fizz, Clink! is made possible with sponsorship support from Bonbright Distributors, Dayton International Airport, Enterprise Roofing & Sheet Metal, Heidelberg Distributing and White Allen European Auto Group, with special thanks to American Classic Snack Company, Twist Cupcakery and Winan’s Chocolates + Coffees.

All proceeds from this new fundraiser help benefit operations at the Dayton Art Institute.

“I hope everyone will take the opportunity to sip and savor, while helping support the museum as we begin the difficult process of recovering from financial impact of the pandemic,” Roediger added. “If you’re not a drinker, you can also go to the Pop, Fizz, Clink! page on our website, make an online donation to the event, and you will get access to the May 1st online party!”

Party Pack purchasers must be at least 21 years old and residents of the state of Ohio. Participants who place orders are asserting that they are 21 years old or more and are Ohio residents.  Participants must produce a valid photo identification, including proof of Ohio residency and age, when picking up packages. No exceptions will be made.

The Dayton Art Institute collection galleries are open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. For more information about planning a visit, go to www.daytonartinstitute.org or call 937-223-4ART (4278).

MetroParks to Reopen Visitor Centers, Tree Tower and More

March 23, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

Five Rivers MetroParks (FRMP) will reopen park amenities, such as visitor centers and shelters, and will resume select public offerings this spring. These changes are in response to revised guidance from Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and Public Health – Dayton & Montgomery County.

“We are so grateful that our community has found both solace and adventure in their MetroParks during the past year,” said Shelli DiFranco, director of marketing and public engagement. “Because our visitors, volunteers and staff have followed the guidelines created to keep everyone safe and healthy outdoors, we are able to reopen amenities in the coming weeks.”

MetroParks has begun accepting shelter reservations for dates on Sunday, April 18, or later with a reduced capacity of 30% or 10 people, whichever is greater. This is in line with the Ohio Department of Health’s order for outdoor entertainment venues. Guests with existing reservations for April 18 or later will be accommodated or receive a full refund. All picnic tables will be returned to the shelters, nearby restrooms will be open and routine maintenance will be conducted to ensure shelters are ready for the community.

Visitor centers at Carriage Hill and Cox Arboretum MetroParks will reopen on the weekends beginning on Saturday, May 8. Swings and benches at such parks as RiverScape, Deeds Point and Englewood MetroParks have been returned. Likewise, the Tree Tower at Cox Arboretum MetroPark has reopened.

The summer fitness series at RiverScape MetroPark will return on Saturdays beginning May 1 — as in summers past. The weekend classes will alternate between yoga and cardio dance. The free classes will be held at the park from 10-11 am, and patrons can choose to participate virtually. Capacity for each class has been reduced to 30% following guidance from Responsible RestartOhio. Access to the activity site will be restricted and pre-registration is strongly encouraged to reserve a spot. Fitness classes are expected to run through August.

The outdoor farmers market at the 2nd Street Market reopened March 20, and will be open on Saturdays from 9 am to 1 pm, rain or shine (with the exception of severe weather). All vendors are set up outdoors on the Market’s south parking lot. All shoppers, vendors, and staff are required to wear face coverings.

“In the coming weeks and months, we hope to responsibly reopen additional amenities,” DiFranco said. “We’ll be in close contact with our local health department on how to safely do that.”

Paddling on the Great Miami River in the Spring – Safely!

March 23, 2021 By GreatMiamiRiverway

Paddling on the Great Miami River in the spring can be tempting – especially after a long, cold winter when we are looking to get back on the river. But you need to consider a few more things before you head out.

To help you keep paddling through colder water temperatures, we’ve put together our top 10 tips and things to think about before you decide to pack up and head out.

Our cold weather paddling top ten tips

  1. Clothing. Let’s start with what you wear. In winter, you need to cover the places you lose heat. Wear a hat, pogies and/or gloves, and insulated wet boots. Avoid cotton and choose high-wicking sports fabrics, wool, or fleece instead. *Don’t forget your life jacket – never leave home without it – and WEAR IT!*
  2. Make your boat as watertight as possible. Repair cracks. Double check the bolts to see if any are loose, and tighten them. You want to keep as much water out as possible. Carry a sponge around so you can get rid of any excess water.
  3. Carry a dry bag. It’s a great place to store keys and your phone, but also snacks for the paddle and a spare set of clothes, just in case!
  4. File a Float Plan. Tell someone where you are going, when you are leaving, and when you will be back.
  5. Take a Buddy. Don’t boat alone – especially when the conditions are colder or the water levels are up. Paddling is more fun with a friend anyway.
  6. Warm up. Get the blood pumping and the muscles warm. It will help prevent injury and also make the paddle a little more pleasant all round!
  7. Fuel up. Pack energy bars, fruits and/or nuts. Bring a thermos with a warm drink.
  8. Check the weather before you leave. Fall and winter are notoriously unpredictable. Always check the flow before heading out on a river. Heavy rainfall can change river patterns quickly.
  9. Always carry a phone or other way to call for help. Important for every paddle. A phone in your dry bag should be enough, but if you plan on trips in less developed places, a GPS transmitter might be a good investment.
  10. For more safety tips, see the Great Miami River Water Trail Map.

Before you head off, just one more thing. Cold water shock can happen at any time of the year (not just when it’s freezing cold!) and is the body’s reaction to a sudden change in temperature. Read up on cold water safety before heading out on the water, especially if you’re new to paddling.

Stay safe and have fun!
