Lily’s Oyster Happy Hour Starts Today

March 7, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

Lily’s in the Oregon District will be offering discounted oyster happy hour from Tuesday through Sunday from 5-7pm until March 21st for dine in only. According to owner Emily Mendenhall, “we had so much fun at this year’s 2-week oyster fest and we’ve been brainstorming what we’d like to do for a revamped happy hour.  We’ll run this for 2 weeks and then evaluate it to see if it’s well received enough to make it a permanent thing.”

They’ll be serving up  oysters on the half shell, oyster shooters, fried oysters, oyster po boys, and Vietnamese baked oysters- “which are a Cochon (a NOLA restaurant owner Emily once worked at) inspired baked oyster in a garlic, lemony compound butter with red pepper flakes,” according to Chef Don Warfe,  who also shared that it was one of the big hits during their Oyster Fest.   There will also be specials on glasses of wine, beer, and cocktails!!

Oyster lovers are encouraged to arrive early, as they will start each day with a limited quantity to ensure freshness, and when they are gone they are gone.  Warfe shares they will have both east coast oysters, which are generally saltier, a bit bigger, chewier, and have a longer, paisley shape. as well as  west coast oysters that seem to have a  signature cucumber or melon note, they’re mild in salt and tend to be smaller overall.

Reservations are suggested, make them by  calling 937-723-7637, walk ins welcome as well.

‘DRAG’ging Dayton Through The ‘MUD’lick!

March 4, 2021 By Joshua Stucky

Dayton has many icons. Rob Lowe, Allison Janney. Jonathan Winters. Nancy Cartwright….many more. Two of Dayton’s biggest iconic Drag Queens are joining forces to kick-off a new ‘talk/info/game’ show entitled ‘The FonDana Show!’ And it looks to be a ‘HOOTENANNY!’

Fonda Peters and Dana Sintell, two of the founding members of Dayton’s legendary ‘RubiGirls’ are stepping into new roles as show hosts. “It’s a little bit ‘The View” mixed with a touch of “The Price is Right” wrapped in a Sunday Afternoon informercial.’ says Peters. ‘There will be some laughs, some learning…oh and some great cocktails!’

The show films at Mudlick Tap House and will feature signature drinks prepared by Thomas Morris, a Mudlick Mixologist. ‘I can’t wait!’ says Morris. ‘It’s gonna be whacky!’ The cocktails will be shared with the guests….and the line-up of guests is stellar for the first taping.

‘We put an all-call out on Facebook, and it blew up!’ Says Sintell. ‘Our first taping features Darryl Demure (TV Star) , Amelia Robinson (Columbus Dispatch) , Michelle Kaye (PNC), Kevin Tunstall (Arcade), Alexis Larsen (DAI), Eva Buttacavoli (The CO) & Philip Drennen (D2D). These are all local heavy-hitters and they have much to share with the Dayton Community!’ The initial taping will take place on 3/8 with an announced premiere to come.  We’re looking forward to having a live audience, once Covid ends.

Fonda Peters and Dana Sintell

The FonDana Show actually evolved. ‘It’s true. So, a couple of the RubiGirls were on vacation in NY. A phone call from LA came through and they wanted to talk to Dana about doing a business make-over show along with India Summer.’ Peters continues. ‘COVID postponed that, but it got us thinking…let’s do something here in Dayton! From there, along came Indigo Life Media‘s Andrew and Lauren White! They are spectacular to work with. They get our MoJo and together, we see a terrific show in the making! People have been saying forever,’The RubiGirls need a show…and here we are!’ Other RubiGirls will appear from time-to-time with Minnie Skirt and India Summer each having a recurring role.

Joshua (Dana) Stuckey and Tim (Fonda) Farquhar

The actual show gives guests a chance to talk about their special part in the Dayton Community. Along with that, each and every guest gets a chance to raise money for their favorite charity through games. ‘This is the kind of crazy I love!’ says Sintell. ‘To know we are helping people is the RubiGirl Way! We have had very successful virtual events, and with the professionalism of this production team, we are PUMPed! It’s exciting to know something good came out of the last year…and I think this show will be good for our community!’

If you are interested in taking the stage on the FonDana Show for their May taping, send your pertinent info to [email protected].

Dayton at Work and Play: Bridget Walker

March 4, 2021 By Bill Franz

Bridget Walker at Sweets Boutique Bakery & Cafe in Xenia. When I first visited the shop Bridget told me a bit abut how she came to be in business.

“I started baking cakes for people when we were stationed in England. The families of some of the airmen on base didn’t like English baked goods, so I started baking and selling birthday cakes. Personally, I liked some of the English baked goods, and I often sell hot cross buns here.”

“When we returned to the U.S. I baked cakes out of my home. The business grew, and I needed more space, so I opened Sweets Boutique (28 East Second Street in Xenia).”

Operating during the pandemic has been tough, but I understand that her sale of boxed lunches has boomed. People get a cookie and some fresh baked bread with each lunch

Dayton Made-Famous People From Our City: Nancy Cartwright

March 3, 2021 By Greg Simms Jr.

Nancy Cartwright grew up in Kettering and discovered her talent for voices at an early age. While in the fourth grade at St. Charles Borromeo, she won a school-wide speech competition with her performance of Rudyard Kipling’s How the Camel Got His Hump. Cartwright graduated from  Fairmont West High School where she participated in theater and marching band. She regularly entered public speaking competitions, placing first in the “Humorous Interpretation” category at the National District Tournament two years running.

In 1976, Cartwright landed a part-time job doing voice-overs for commercials on WING radio. A representative from Warner Bros. Records visited WING and later sent Cartwright a list of contacts in the animation industry. One of these was Daws Butler, known for voicing characters such as Huckleberry Hound, Snagglepuss, Elroy Jetson, Spike the Bulldog and Yogi Bear. Cartwright called him and left a message in a Cockney accent on his answering machine. Butler immediately called her back and agreed to be her mentor.

And now Nancy Cartwright  is widely known to be the voice of Bart Simpson, of The Simpsons. That in itself is a massive accomplishment, since the character of Bart Simpson and the Simpson’s show is such a huge part of American pop culture.

But, Cartwright has done soooo much more throughout her career. Along with voicing Bart, she also voices several more voices on The Simpsons, such as: Ralph Wiggum, Todd Flanders, and Nelson Muntz.
She also was the lead in a made for television movie released in 1982 called Marian Rose White. She played the substantial role as Ethel in one of the better segments of Twilight Zone: The Movie.
She’s done more voice-work for other hit cartoons like: Rugrats, Animaniacs, and Pinky and the Brain. She’s also appeared in front of the camera on television shows and movies, such as : The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Godzilla, and 24. And all of those items are just the tip of Cartwright’s amazing career iceberg.
In 2011 Ms. Cartwright was inducted into the Dayton Area Broadcasters Hall of Fame and in 2016 a stone honoring her was placed in the Dayton Region’s Walk of Fame in Wright Dunbar Village.

Gotta say, though, her being Bart Simpson is, possibly, the coolest thing ever.

Beers Brewed by Women To Celebrate International Women’s Day

March 3, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

International Women’s Collaboration Brew Day is a worldwide annual event that takes place on March 8th of every year in conjunction with International Women’s Day.

It is an event open to all women working in or interested in beer to learn, network, and make friends—so join in, collaborate, enjoy brewing, enjoy the produce and try and get as many women involved as possible!

According to a Brewers Association benchmarking survey, women make up only about 7.5% of professional brewers. In order to help women advance careers in the craft beer industry, several Ohio breweries have encouraged their employees to participate in women’s brew days.

Here’s a list of beers created and brewed by women in celebration of International Women’s Day in the Miami Valley:

Alematic Artisan Ales

6182 Chambersburg Rd, Huber Heights, OH 45424
(937) 813-8901
Alematic hosted their first guest brewer, Andrea from Nocterra Brewing in Powell OH, to create a blueberry pale ale called Blue Ocean Floor. The beer will be available on draft at the Huber Heights taproom on Sunday, March 7.

Branch & Bone Artisan Ales

905 Wayne Ave, Dayton, OH 45410
937.723.7608

For their third annual International Women’s Day brew, the women of Branch & Bone Artisan Ales chose to make a mai tai IPA with lime, cara cara orange, tangerine, almonds and vanilla. Thanks, It Has Pockets Vol. 3 was also dry hopped with the Pink Boots hop blend. Cans are available for pickup and shipping today, with a draft release coming on Friday, March 5.

Carillon Brewing Co.

1000 Carillon BlvdDayton, Ohio  45409

On Monday, March 8 from 11am – 7pm they are holding a Women’s Brew Day where the female  staff of Dayton History take the helm on a batch of our historical Carillon Coriander Ale.  This special Monday opening  is to share the  educational standpoint as the brewery is usually closed on Monday. The public  is invited to come in on Monday, enjoy our ales, and engage with our female staff members and brewing team as they brew this historic Coriander Ale recipe.  The recipe comes from an 1831 publication entitled “Receipts For the Husbandman and Housewife” , essentially a guide on how to properly raise a family, emphasizing the brewing of beer by the housewife as an essential role in maintaining the health and wellbeing of the family.  The female role as the primary brewer that dominated most history waned with the advent of the industrialization of the beer brewing process, but Dayton has boasted several female brewery owners in its past, and that has carried over into present day.

Crooked Handle Brewing

760 N Main St, Springboro, OH 45066
(937) 790-3450

This Springboro brewery will hold a women’s brew day for their staff on Monday, March 8, making a pale ale with the Pink Boots hops blend.

Lucky Star Brewery

219 S 2nd St, Miamisburg, OH 45342
(937) 866-2739

The Mayor of Miamisburg, Michelle Collins will be joining joining as they brew a be brewing a Saison; Ball & Chain that day.

N.E.W. Ales

1521 First Avenue Middletown, OH 45044
(937) 823-9716

A women majority-owned brewery, N.E.W. Ales is making a West Coast Style IPA with pineapple, and calling it “Hoptaschick”! The IPA is 7.5% ABV. Born from the idea that women enjoy a mouthful of hoppy bitterness, Hoptaschick delivers just that. Featuring heavy doses of Strata and Topaz hops, then splashed with 11 pounds of pineapple per BBL, you’ll find notes of citrus and pine in perfect balance. To spread the work about women’s brew day, and to give back to the community, they had a local, female artist, Liz Paulson, draw up a design to sell as a sticker, with parts of the proceeds going to the Women’s Hope House in Middletown. They will start selling Hoptaschick when their Biergarten reopens March 26th and then they will be open Fridays 5-10 and Saturdays 4-10.

Roundhouse Depot Brewing

217 W, Chillicothe Ave.,Bellefontaine, OH 433115
540-323-1295
Owner Kathy Troyer brewed Hopped the Tracks, a hoppy brown ale, for release around International Women’s Day. More of Kathy’s small batch brews will be released throughout the month of March.

Southern Ohio Brewing

818 Factory Rd, Beavercreek, OH 45434
(937) 705-6690

Their Pink Boots Brew is occurring on Sunday. The Brewery has a strong woman’s presence. With the help of the head brewer, all the women of the brewery have worked on developing the recipe for the brew.

Star City Brewing

319 S 2nd St, Miamisburg, OH 45342
(937) 701-7827

In honor of International Women’s Day the ladies of Star City Brewing have made a Spicy Honey Brown Ale which we’re calling “Honey, I’m feeling spicy.”  They are going to tap their beer on Saturday the 13th, because it’s a longer, busier day and $0.50 of every pint sold on the 13th will be donated to the Artemis Domestic Violence Center of downtown Dayton.

Yellow Springs Brewery

305 N Walnut St Ste B, Yellow Springs, OH 45387

(937) 767-0222

They brewed Little Dancer Wheat Ale with Ginger and Blueberries- This complex and refreshing wheat ale was brewed on International Women’s Day by the amazing ladies that work at our brewery. The recipe was designed by one of their brewers, Rebekah Little, who also led the brew day.! They will  be tapping it on International Women’s Day, Monday, March 8th at 3pm in the  taproom. They’re also donating a portion of sales to Pink Boots Society for educational scholarships and programming.

BOOGIE & MY SALINGER YEAR + 2 New Virtual Engagements at The Neon

March 3, 2021 By Jonathan McNeal

We had another solid weekend at THE NEON. Thank you to everyone who has been coming out to support our great films. And speaking of great films…I’m sure you already know that NOMADLAND won “Best Motion Picture, Drama” at last weekend’s Golden Globes. I’m quite certain it will be a big contender at The Oscars, so we’re holding it for a third week…don’t miss it on the big screen. In addition to NOMADLAND, we’ll open two new films this weekend. BOOGIE is from Eddie Huang (producer of the hit TV show FRESH OFF THE BOAT) and MY SALINGER YEAR (starring Sigourney Weaver and Margaret Qualley) is based on Joanna Rakoff’s memoir.
THE FATHER, the new incredible film starring Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman, will have a preview screening on Thursday, March 11 at 7:15 (regular ticket prices apply). It will officially open with multiple screenings per day on March 12.
In our Virtual Cinema, we also have 2 new films. THE PEOPLE VS. AGENT ORANGE is a powerful investigatory environmental documentary, and GUSTAV STICKLEY: AMERICAN CRAFTSMAN is for all of you design lovers. (Be sure to read the description for PEOPLE VS. AGENT ORANGE…you can sign up to attend a free webinar hosted by UD’s Human Rights Center on March 18.) Both of these films will be available starting Friday.
NEW IN-PERSON ENGAGEMENTS:
Synopsis for BOOGIE: “Alfred ‘Boogie’ Chin, a basketball phenom living in Queens, N.Y., dreams of one day playing in the NBA. While his parents pressure him to focus on earning a scholarship to an elite college, Boogie must find a way to navigate a new girlfriend, high school, on-court rivals and the burden of expectation.” (Focus Features) Click the image below to watch the film’s trailer. (You might recognize Taylour Paige in the photo below…she was just in MA RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM late last year. She truly shines in this new film, and I’m anxious to see what she does next.)
Synopsis for MY SALINGER YEAR: “New York in the 90s: After leaving graduate school to pursue her dream of becoming a writer, Joanna (Margaret Qualley) gets hired as an assistant to Margaret (Sigourney Weaver), the stoic and old-fashioned literary agent of J. D. Salinger. Fluctuating between poverty and glamour, she spends her days in a plush, wood-panelled office – where dictaphones and typewriters still reign and agents doze off after three-martini lunches – and her nights in a sink-less Brooklyn apartment with her socialist boyfriend. Joanna’s main task is processing Salinger’s voluminous fan mail, but as she reads the heart-wrenching letters from around the world, she becomes reluctant to send the agency’s impersonal standard letter and impulsively begins personalizing the responses. The results are both humorous and moving, as Joanna, while using the great writer’s voice, begins to discover her own.” (IFC Films). After just watching all 4 seasons of the hit French TV show CALL MY AGENT, I was all in for this charming new film.
Synopsis for THE FATHER: Opens March 11! “Anthony is 80, mischievous, living defiantly alone and rejecting the carers that his daughter, Anne, encouragingly introduces. Yet help is also becoming a necessity for Anne; she can’t make daily visits anymore and Anthony’s grip on reality is unravelling. As we experience the ebb and flow of his memory, how much of his own identity and past can Anthony cling to? How does Anne cope as she grieves the loss of her father, while he still lives and breathes before her? THE FATHER warmly embraces real life, through loving reflection upon the vibrant human condition; heart-breaking and uncompromisingly poignant – a movie that nestles in the truth of our own lives.” (Sony Classics) Click the image below to watch the film’s trailer.
NEW IN OUR VIRTUAL CINEMA:
Synopsis for GUSTAV STICKLEY: AMERICAN CRAFTSMAN: Available starting March 5! “The rise, fall and resurrection of the father of the American Arts and Crafts movement is chronicled in this new documentary. The film offers an unprecedented look at the life and works of Gustav Stickley as told through interviews, archival materials, and a close examination of his most iconic works. It traces the development and evolution of Stickley’s unique style, as well as the creation of his diverse businesses including the Craftsman Magazine, Craftsman Farms and his ground-breaking Manhattan store. It also details the eventual loss of his businesses – and, after several decades, the rebirth and recognition of the movement he inspired.” You can watch this film on your computer or mobile device as well as via Chromecast. For more details about screening this film at home, visit First Run’s HELP page. Click the image below to watch the trailer and gain 72 hour access to the film for $10.
Synopsis for THE PEOPLE VS. AGENT ORANGE: Available starting March 5! “The Agent Orange catastrophe did not end with the Vietnam War. Today, the world over, a primary chemical of the toxic defoliant controls weeds in farming, forestry, parks, playgrounds… It wreaks havoc on the human genome, causing deformed births and deadly cancers.
After decades of struggle and tragic personal losses, two heroic women are leading a worldwide movement to end the plague and hold the manufacturers accountable.
In France, Tran To Nga is suing the American chemical industry for poisoning her in Vietnam. In America, Carol Van Strum exposes the continuing use of toxic herbicides.
Incriminating documents disappear. Activists are threatened. A helicopter technician secretly films the contamination of reservoirs, while a massive industrial cover-up goes on.” (Alan Adelson & Kate Taverna) A week+ after this film becomes available for you to watch, you can take part in a free webinar with author David Zierler. The webinar is co-sponsored by University of Dayton Human Rights Center, the War Legacies Project, and the Children of Vietnam Veterans Health Alliance. Here’s the LINK where you can register and learn more about the webinar. Tickets for accessing the film are $12 for 72 hours. This film can be viewed on your computer or mobile device or via your TV with Apple TV or Roku. Additional instructions can be found on Eventive’s HELP PAGE. Click the image below to watch the trailer and reserve your ticket.
CONTINUING IN OUR VIRTUAL CINEMA:
Synopsis for FALLING: Viggo Mortensen’s directorial debut – also starring Lance Heriksen and Laura Linney – is now available! “John (Viggo Mortensen) lives with his partner, Eric (Terry Chen), and their daughter, Mónica (Gabby Velis), in California, far from the traditional rural life he left behind years ago. John’s father, Willis (Lance Henriksen), a headstrong man from a bygone era, lives alone on the isolated farm where John grew up. Willis is in the early stages of dementia, making running the farm on his own increasingly difficult, so John brings him to stay at his California home so that he and his sister Sarah (Laura Linney) might help him find a place near them to relocate to. Unfortunately, their best intentions ultimately run up against Willis’s adamant refusal to change his way of life in the slightest.” This film can be viewed on your computer or mobile device. You can also watch via your TV (when you download the Kino Now app on Apple TV, Roku, or Amazon TV/Stick). Additional instructions can be found on the film’s landing page…just click the picture below to watch the trailer and reserve access to the film for $12.
Synopsis for LEONA: “LEONA is an intimate, insightful, and moving film that tells the story of a young Jewish woman from Mexico City who finds herself torn between her family and her forbidden love. Ripe with all the drama and interpersonal conflicts of a Jane Austen novel, watching her negotiate the labyrinth of familial pressure, religious precedent, and her own burgeoning sentiment is both painful and beautiful – there are no easy choices to be made and the viewer travels back and forth with her as she struggles with her heart to take the best path.” This film is available to watch on your computer or mobile device as well as via your smart TV via Chromecast. Click the image below to watch the trailer and reserve 48 hour access to the film for $12.

‘Womein in The Air Force” Exhibit Opens at Air Force Museum

March 2, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

A new series of displays highlighting women’s achievements in their civilian and military careers with an emphasis on the U.S. Air Force and its predecessors will be officially opened during a live-streamed virtual event on March 5 at 6:30 p.m. (Tune-in beginning at 6:20 p.m. for a pre-event video at www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/Upcoming/Women-in-Air-Force/).

The exhibit, titled “Women in the Air Force: From Yesterday into Tomorrow,” covers historical issues, changes in laws and attitudes, and women’s contributions to the Air Force mission. These displays, which are located throughout the museum, contain one of a kind artifacts used by women in the Air Force from many different eras.

In the Early Years Gallery, visitors can learn how British female pilots led the way beginning with Mary Wilkins-Ellis, who joined the Britain’s Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA), and transported aircraft from factories to active service squadrons during World War II.

The story of Jacqueline Cochran, who was ranked among the top female pilots of her era by setting an incredible number of records, and breaking men’s distance, altitude, and speed achievements can be seen in the Early Years and World War II Galleries, as well as throughout the museum. Cochran would go on to become the founder and director of the Women’s Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) program, and was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal – the highest non-combat award – for her work in 1945.

New displays in the second building include one on the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act, which was signed into law by President Truman in 1948, and authorized women to serve permanently in all military branches. Among the stories featured in this building include that of SSgt. Esther Blake, who became the first woman in the Air Force by enlisting on the first minute, of the first hour, of the first day that Air Force authorized women’s participation; and the heroic actions of Lt. Regina Aune and Lt. Harriet Goffinett, who carried many children to safety during Operation Babylift.

The drive to break down barriers is further illustrated by the Significant Women Silhouette – a uniquely designed display that introduce visitors to those who created new opportunities for women. The exhibit covers a diverse range of achievements such as the first American woman to fly solo in an airplane (Blanche Stuart Scott); the first woman to fly non-stop across the Atlantic Ocean (Amelia Earhart); the Air Force’s first female physician (Capt. Dorothy Elias); and the “Bouncing Bettys” award-winning munitions team.

Among the many “female firsts” on display in the third building are the first 10 graduates of the U.S. Air Force Undergraduate Pilot Training (UPT) program; the first female fighter pilot (Jeannie Flynn Leavitt); the first female aerial gunner (Airman Vanessa Dobos); the first female to fly a fighter aircraft in combat (Capt. Martha McSally); and the first female F-35 pilot (Lt. Col. Christine Mau).

The story of pilot Nichole Malachowski, who took her first solo flight at age 16 (earning her pilot’s license before her driver’s license), and later became the first female pilot on any U.S. military high performance jet team as a member of the Thunderbirds in 2005, is also featured in this building.

Amazing stories of courage are highlighted including Air National Guard pilot Lt. Heather Penney of the 121st Fighter Squadron. On Sept. 11, 2001, Penney along with another pilot received one-way orders to stop hijacked United Airlines Flight 93 as it headed towards Washington, D.C. Armed with shoot to kill orders, but no weapons, they were on a suicide mission with the full intention of ramming the Boeing 757 in order to protect national security. After sweeping the D.C. airspace for over an hour, the pilots learned the passengers had forced the aircraft down in a Pennsylvania field.

Another ground-breaking display titled Moving Towards Equality highlights milestones in legislation that brought policy changes on issues such as automatic discharge for pregnancy or having custody of minor children; the expansion of women’s rights allowing women to have the ability to serve in any military occupation, and further opportunities for advancement. In addition, female leaders who have overcome roadblocks, defeated biases and led the way in recent years are featured in a display titled Women Leading the Way.

Finally, in the fourth building visitors can learn about the first American female astronaut to go into space (Sally Ride); the first U.S. military woman in space who was also the first woman to work aboard the International Space Station (Maj. Susan Helms); the first female space shuttle pilot (Maj. Eileen Collins); the first women to serve as commanders in orbit at the same time (Col. Pamela Melroy and Peggy Whitson); and some of the most important discoveries and inventions that female Air Force scientists, engineers, mathematicians, medical professionals, and artists have developed over the years.

According to National Museum of the U.S. Air Force Curator Christina Douglass, telling the story of what women have overcome over many decades was an amazing experience and something she hopes future generations will come to appreciate.

“The ‘Women in the Air Force’ exhibit is packed with moving stories that exemplify the passion and dedication that women have had to have in order to overcome certain stereotypes – just to be able to serve our nation,” said Douglass. “My hope is that those who come to visit this exhibit will gain a better understanding about the sacrifices that were made by women in the past; never take what we have for granted; and are inspired to continue to advocate for equality.”
