The Hathaways at Hidden Gem Tonight

July 31, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

Tom Baer is the band’s drummer/sound engineer/producer/strategic planner. He has played drums for bands such as ‘Sunnuva” and ‘The Decades’, and was the sound engineer for ‘Flyweil’, ‘The Pulse’, and ‘Zummo’. He produced ‘The Pulse’s first album, as well as the first ‘Hathaways’ CD. He is also one of the principal vocalists in the band.

The ‘other’ Tom (Dempsey) plays bass, sings, and is one of the band’s contributing songwriters. He was a founding member of ‘The Hathaways’ and ‘Seventh Street’ and a band-mate                            of Tom Baer’s in ‘Sunnuva’.

Barry Drake is the band’s versatile guitarist/vocalist/resident wild-man. If an Eric Clapton tune or Stevie Ray Vaughn number is requested, he is the obvious man for the job. Plus, he can sing like Paul McCartney and dance like Harry James.

Sammy Davis is the newest member of the Hathaways, although he played with Barry Drake twenty years ago in the ‘Goin’ Home’ band, touring Michigan and most of Ohio. Sammy has had a parallel career in music with the Hathaways, playing in competing rock outfits for a long time. He has finally come to roost with the Hathaways, and we couldn’t be happier. He can duplicate the feel of a variety of musical styles with his array of keyboards, from honky tonk piano to Keith Emerson’s Hammond organ to a full orchestra.

Last, but not least, is Randy Eldred, our sound engineer. Randy makes sure the sound of the band is pro quality.  A musician in his own right, he knows what it takes to bring all of the instrumental elements together to achieve a cohesive sound.  His production company goes by the name of ‘Cody Music’, and is a huge contributor to our success.

10 Week Construction Detour at Airport

July 30, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

Visitors to Dayton International Airport will notice a short detour beginning Aug. 2 as the U.S. Rt. 40 improvements project continues.
The following will be closed through Oct. 1:
-Access ramp from southbound Airport Terminal Drive to U.S. Rt. 40 (National Road)
-Access ramp from U.S. Rt. 40 (National Road) to northbound Airport Terminal Drive
The detour will involve Concorde Drive, Freight Drive, Cargo Road, Boeing Drive and Terminal Drive. It will be clearly marked and is expected to add less than five minutes of travel time to or from the airport.
Drivers approaching the airport via the Airport Access Road (from I-70) will not be affected by the ramp closures or detour.
The temporary ramp closures will allow the project to be completed in a shortened time frame. The U.S. Rt. 40 improvements project will widen a portion of U.S. 40, which will create a better traffic flow to and from the airport. The project will also upgrade traffic signals and provide new, modernized ramps at the U.S. 40 airport access point.

Pay what you CAN Night: Looped.

July 29, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

Based on a real event featuring a Hollywood legend.

Based on a real event, which has been the subject of gossip for years in Hollywood, Looped takes place in the summer of 1965, when an inebriated Tallulah Bankhead, well-known for her husky voice, outrageous personality, and devastating wit, returns to the studio to redub — or loop — one line of dialogue for her last movie, Die! Die! My Darling! Bankhead’s outsized personality dominates the young, frustrated film editor who is knocked for a loop by the tempestuous stage and screen icon.

Celtic Knot presents Dulahan at Flanagan’s Pub

July 28, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

We know you will “knot” want to miss the Celtic Knot weekend kicking off with performances by fan favorites, Dulahan, joined by the Dwyer School of Irish Dance and McGovern Irish Dance.

Dulahan is based in Dayton, Ohio and has performed regionally for the past 19 years. They are one of 3 bands that have performed every year at the Dayton Celtic Festival since its inception and have also been a frequent performer at Flanagan’s annual St Patrick’s Day celebrations. Dulahan draws on the traditional Irish and Scottish music that heavily influenced the bands early years, and incorporates varied contemporary American influences to create its unique musical niche. Dulahan combines the energy and drive of Irish Instrumental music, a hint of Celtic Rock and smidge of American Bluegrass with the invocative songwriting of Americana, Roots and Folk to create an infectious hybrid sound.

Remembering the Lives that were Lost During the Dayton Mass Shooting

July 28, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

Keeping the 9 Alive, August 4th

The FUDGE Foundation is planning an event to commemorate the anniversary of the Dayton Mass Shooting that claimed the lives of nine individuals and forever changed the lives of many members of our community.

They will be honoring those who were taken on Wednesday, August 4th, 2019, starting at 6pm in front of Blind Bob’s. There will be community leaders present to speak about gun violence and the danger it presents in our communities, a raffle contest with prizes donated from Mad River Adventures, Winans, movie tickets and many more, a candle lighting service, music and prayer as well as nine-minutes of silence to honor the victims who were fatally shot that night.

Resource guides to support those who are victims of trauma, such as mental health and support group information will also be available.

They invite the entire Dayton Metro community to join together at Blind Bob’s on August 4th to show their love and support for the families and individuals that have been affected by this senseless violence, as well as to seek out meaningful solutions to these shared problems.

The FUDGE Foundation is a non-profit organization that seeks to help individuals that are impacted directly and indirectly by mass shootings, violence, human trafficking, domestic abuse and other forms of trauma. Founded, by Dion Green, out of love and the memory of his father, Derrick Fudge.

One of the Most Popular Garlic Fest Dishes available at PangeaKeto

July 27, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

PangeaKeto’s Sweet Chili Garlic Chicken was one of the big hits of Garlic Fest this past weekend.  Owner Matt Hayden said, “it was soooooooo NICE , after nearly two years, to finally be back at a festival. We have thoroughly missed the jovial atmosphere of the Garlic Fest, the opportunity to interact with old friends, old clients, colleagues, and of course the opportunity to make new ones.” Hayden first introduced this chicken dish at Garlic Fest 2016.

So they’ve decided to celebrate a somewhat return to normalcy, all week by serving the very same Garlic Fest Menu of SWEET CHILI GARLIC CHICKEN, PIZZA BOMBS and ITALIAN CRUNCH SLAW !! To show our appreciation to Garlic Fest, they will be donating $1 of each GARLIC FEST CHICKEN to the Garlic Hall of Fame which recognizes community nominated people in the Foodservice sector that have had a positive impact on the local food scene.

Bryan’s Updated Quest for the Best Wings

July 27, 2021 By Bryan Suddith

The Buffalo Wing was an economical snack created in response to late-night bar patrons looking for a quick snack. In the now famed Anchor Bar in Buffalo, more than 50 years ago, the Buffalo Chicken Wing was invented. PS. The guys who started BW’s (BW3’s) were students at Kent State from Buffalo and wanted that treat from home, so they opened a place.
Now…Dayton has no shortage of places to get wings. Everyone is getting in on the wing business but a few in the area do it right.
Quick disclaimer, I can’t in good faith review a wing produced by any chain that specializes in pizza. Wings that are 40 minutes old and delivered in a cardboard box is just wrong. Secondly, I left out two locally famous wing joints. For the record, I love having a tall beer and a plate of wings from Roosters or Frickers. I enjoy both equally. But…for this quest, I went to the little spots.
Today I am talking Dayton’s best wings, my favorites. A place where you can always get a great wing. The best if you will. Here’s where I land in my quest for the best of Dayton chicken wings.
Lock 27
1035 South Main Street
Centerville, Ohio 45458

Dayton Dragons Plaza
329 E. First St.
Dayton, Ohio 45402

Lock 27 is making magic one wing at a time. These are smoked. Deep-fried and full of flavor unmatched in Dayton. These aren’t the 10-cent wings of your college days. Crispy, but insanely tender and makes you wish you got two orders. The hot option comes in habanero peach and the mild option is a dry rub full of flavor without the heat. Lock 27 doesn’t stop there. They are making the bleu cheese dressing by hand with a little sriracha for an extra kick.
Grab one of their beers to accompany. Nothing better to wash down an order of these wings.

Company 7 BBQ
1001 S. Main St.
Englewood, OH 45322
These guys are more than brisket and pulled pork. Two reasons to make the drive north. Company 7 is smoking these wings in a wet marinade and then deep-frying to perfection when you order. These guys look like a standard naked wing until you take a bite. It’s the crispy fried wing you wish for with a smokey back-end you normally only get from a good slice of brisket or smoked pulled pork. The wing is one of a kind and is fall off the bone perfection so nothing is wasted.
Like Lock 27 you have options for beer to pair. Compnay 7 keeps 25 tabs of craft beers all the time. These wings are bold in flavor and will stand up to your favorite IPA or Dark Ale.

Nicks
1443 N. Detroit
Xenia, OH
I like options. Nicks is a joint older than the chicken wing for which they’ve become famous. When I say options I mean options. Nicks offers their wings breaded or naked (no breading is my preference) and you can enjoy 14 different sauces.

Fire in ya Hole | Nick’s Secret Sweet Hot Damn | Original Hot | Spicy Garlic | Asian Cajun | General Zen’s | On The Fence | Sissy Sauce | Sweet Bourbon BBQ | Sweet BBQ | Sweet-n-Sour | Honey Mustard | Mild | Nick’s Dry Rub

I split my order between Original Hot and Sweet Bourbon BBQ. The BBQ is sticky and sweet with a hint of bourbon to keep it exciting. I like the hot with Bleu Cheese dressing. It’s the way the Anchor Bar intended.
Bonus…order your favorite wings with a waffle. Just try it. Something crazy good about a hot wing and a syrup-covered waffle and Nick’s does it right.
Archers
9496 Dayton-Lebanon Pike,
Centerville, OH 45458

2030 East Dorothy Lane,
Kettering, OH 45420

The World’s 2nd Best Wings. That’s how Archers bills them. These wings are huge and tasty. This is my go-to here in Kettering for a quick lunch. Available in Mild, Hot, Archer’s Style, Destroyer, Sweet BBQ, Hickory BBQ, and Chipotle BBQ. You guessed it, I get mine with the hot and always get the celery and bleu cheese. These are lightly breaded and deep fried. No tricks. Just good chicken with great flavor.
Keeping up with the theme of great wings and beer, Archer’s is no slouch in the beer area. They have 20 rotating taps but I stick with the Archer’s Ale. I’m a creature of habit and a good hoppy ale seems to work with the oil carried spice of a deep-fried wing.
Angie’s Firehouse
703 Watervliet Ave
Dayton, OH 45420
I love this place. A) Everyone is treated like a local and B) the food is as fantastic as the service. I love these wings. Naked. Fried right. Big. Meaty. The hot option is just perfect. It’s worth noting that these wings come in under $10.00 and that is a deal in this post-pandemic chicken wing economy. Plenty of local beers on tap and plenty more craft beers by the bottle/can.
Here are a few more spots to get great wings in Dayton:
Bunkers Sports Bar
A very traditional wing that never leaves you disappointed. Cooked perfectly.
Romer’s Bar & Grill
Hard to beat the prices here. If you are wanting 10, order 15. Thank me later.
Ticket’s Pub
This is a great pub that happens to have fantastic wings, and gyros, Reubens, burgers, and a bevy of deep-fried bar goodness. Try the wings first. Then go back again and again.
Go ahead. Tell me. Where should I be getting great wings here in Dayton that didn’t make the list?
P.S.
COccasionally I make my own wings at home. I’m gonna share a secret with you. I have found the best recipe for getting my wings to restaurant quality. Alton Brown makes it easy for anyone to make at home, no deep fryer needed.

Local Chef In Finals of National Cooking Competition

July 27, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

This pint sized chef is a finalist in a K-12 National Cooking Competition. Audrey Creighton is one of five finalists in this nationwide competition that will air on July 28 (12p ET) via livestream.

This Oakwood resident got the cooking bug during the pandemic, when she found a cookbook created by her Great Grandmother.  There were over 200 old school Italian recipes and Audrey challenged herself to make 50 of them.  And she did, from crab meat tortellini, biscotti, lasagna and 47 more meals.  Her large family also loved this challenge as they got to enjoy the end results.  Audrey also launched a website to document the meals she was making.

After making it through her first challenge, she decided to use her family travels to inspire her further, taking on new cuisines.  She calls this her Bon Voyage challenge and explains, “I  choose a place that I have traveled to and then, I choose a dish I had there and I recreate it!”  She was able to take a cooking class in Spain, treated her mom to a pasta class for Mother’s Day and attended some local nosh-ups for more ideas. Her father, Sean Crieghton says what impresses him the most about Audrey’s cooking is her calm demeanor in the kitchen and admits she is indeed the best cook in the family. Her favorite thing to cook is salmon and she explains, “its because there are so many ways to infuse flavor into it.”  She’s even experimented with some molecular gastronomy making chocolate noodles, vinegar pearls and balsamic lemon foam.   She says her favorite restaurant is Nanyea, the Ethiopian eatery on North Dixie.

As part of her virtual schooling, her counselor suggested she enter the Virtual Cooking Competition put on by Stride.  She was one of five chosen and the youngest to advance to the finals which will air this Wednesday.  Here are the rules she has to follow:

Competitors will have 30 minutes to create a meal for one using this list of ingredients + any pantry staples:
– at least one green ingredient
– an ingredient that starts with a “C”
– an ingredient from the freezer
– a source of protein
– at least three spices that are not salt or pepper

Let’s all tune in and wish her well!  And hope we’ll be lucky enough to have her cook for us someday.  You can keep up with her cooking by subscribing to her newsletter.  But Audrey insists this is just a hobby, her career goals are to become a lawyer and then a Senator.
