Dayton at Work and Play: Ed Dixon

July 8, 2021 By Bill Franz

I’ve been visiting some of my favorite businesses to see how they weathered the pandemic. This is Ed Dixon at Edward A. Dixon Gallery (133 North Ludlow, Suite 11).
“I started this gallery to bring to Dayton the experience I had when I would visit galleries in New York or other large cities. I wanted it to offer a diverse collection of art in comfortable surroundings, and I wanted it to be welcoming to people no matter what their art or personal background.”
“Initially the gallery was in a large space near the Arcade but because of the pandemic I had to give that space up and move to this smaller space.”
“Because my current space is too small for a show, I rent space in the building on a short term basis for those kinds of special events. That’s what I’m doing now for my show called “We’re Doing it ALL Wrong.” The nationwide response to this show has been amazing. We had entries from all 50 states, and the pieces that were selected by the jurors are very strong. The show is open Fridays 4pm-8pm and Saturdays 1pm – 7pm until July 31.”

Sueño Doesn’t Disappoint

July 7, 2021 By Brian Sharp

Free valet parking as you pull up on Third Street in the Webster Station area of downtown Dayton and enter the doors of the newly opened Sueño. Once inside you immediately feel like you’ve left Dayton and arrived in a hip dining establishment in a large city! The atmosphere is impressive as soon as you enter.

Greeted by a lovely staff and escorted to our table we pass a busy bar. Across the dining room from our table is a platform kitchen with wood fired open flame oven.
We are greeted by Jade our informed server and her assistant Marie. Jade took us on a tour of the menu with answers to all of our questions and fabulous suggestions.
From the Botonas (snacks for sharing) menu we chose guacamole and sikil p’ak (pumpkin seed hummus) both served with house made chips topped with a little cumin and acid(lime juice). Both were amazing and delicious!
Then it came time to choose entrees – Jade was careful to suggest just how to place the order so that everyone’s food arrived at the same time. From the platos pequeños (small plates) menu my friend chose Taco de Cochinita – three tacos with Adobe marinated pork, salsa tamulado and pickled red onion.
From the Hearth menu another friend selected Carne Asada. Beautifully seasoned steak bavette with chimichuri and frijoles charros. I chose the pork al pastor with grilled pineapple, caramelized onion and morita salsa. These dinners are large enough to share – but we didn’t! Two of us also ordered from the Verduras (vegetables) menu a dish of charred corn mixed with cascabel spice, cilantro, queso fresco and crema mixed together and served cold. This was a great balance to the dishes that were a taste explosion.
As if that wasn’t enough…we had to have something from the Postres (dessert) menu – there are two options so we chose one of each. A scoop of Mexican chocolate (house made) ice cream topped with pieces of spicy pepita (pumpkin seed) brittle and arroz con leche – rice pudding with roasted summer peaches and marscapone.
This is a dining experience and one that lends itself to a fabulous date, celebration or just a Wednesday night dinner – in a place that takes you away!
Do yourself a favor and make reservations now!

Rob Schneider Brings the Laughs to Day Air Ballpark

July 7, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

Former Saturday Night Live and movie star, Rob Schneider, will take the stage at Day Air Ballpark on Thursday, August 12th at 7:30 pm.

After the success of the first comedy show featuring Preacher Lawson, we are very pleased to be working with East Coast Entertainment and the Comedy Zone to bring a second show to Dayton,” noted team president Robert Murphy.  “Mr. Schneider is obviously a household name with a very impressive body of work.  This will be a lot of fun.”

A stand-up comic and veteran of the award-winning NBC sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live, Schneider has gone on to a successful career in films, television and continues his word-wide standup tour.

Born in San Francisco, Schneider’s family is of Filipino and Caucasian descent.  His father was Jewish and his mother Catholic.   His mixed background has been a common theme in his comedy acts.   Schneider started his stand-up career in high school opening for the popular San Francisco band “Head On,” and was a regular guest on local radio.  An opening slot for Dennis Miller garnered him an appearance on the HBO’s “13th Annual Young Comedians” special also hosted by Miller. The special led him to a coveted position as a writer for SNL in 1988.  Schneider swiftly moved from a writer and featured player to a full cast member with a cast that included Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, David Spade and the late Chris Farley.

After leaving SNL in 1994 Schneider went to roles in film and television including a starring role in the NBC sitcom “Men Behaving Badly,” and starring roles in the feature films DEUCE BIGALOW: MALE GIGOLO, THE ANIMAL, THE HOT CHICK, DEUCE BIGALOW: EUROPEAN GIGALOW, and THE BENCHWARMERS.

Most recently, Schneider launched his first ever podcast “See What Happens,” available on streaming platforms. Hosted by Schneider and his wife Patricia Maya Schneider, the weekly show features guests from the duo’s Hollywood friends to their gardener while dissecting show business, their contrasting parenting methods, jokes, good food, philosophy and more. New episodes begin airing in August.

Tickets are now on sale.  Prices are $35.00 for general tickets, and $65.00 for V.I.P tickets.  Tickets can be purchased at the Dayton Dragons Box Office by calling (937) 288-2287  and via Ticketmaster at this link: https://www.ticketmaster.com/rob-schneider-comedy-show-dayton-ohio-08-12-2021/event/16005ADE83012105.  Schneider is recommended for ages of 18-years and up.

July 7, 2021 By Jonathan McNeal

What a great weekend! SUMMER OF SOUL is off to a terrific start, and audiences are adoring this powerful new doc! In fact, this film now has the honor of being our highest grossing opening weekend since we’ve been reopened! It is certainly going to stick around. On Friday, we will open a very different but also wonderful doc – THE LONELIEST WHALE: THE SEARCH FOR 52. If you still need to see 12 MIGHTY ORPHANS or RITA MORENO: JUST A GIRL WHO DECIDED TO GO FOR IT, you only have a couple more chances to see them at THE NEON.

In our Virtual Cinema, we’re adding an intriguing new film with lots of familiar faces and great performances – THE GOD COMMITTEE.
Tickets for next week’s engagement of ROADRUNNER: A FILM ABOUT ANTHONY BOURDAIN are now on sale!
NEW IN-PERSON ENGAGEMENTS:
Synopsis for THE LONELIEST WHALE: THE SEARCH FOR 52: “THE LONELIEST WHALE: THE SEARCH FOR 52 is a cinematic quest to find the ’52 Hertz Whale,’ which scientists believe has spent its entire life in solitude calling out at a frequency that is different from any other whale. As the film embarks on this engrossing journey, audiences will explore what this whale’s lonely plight can teach us – not just about our changing relationship to the oceans, but to each other.” (Bleecker Street) Click the image below to watch the film’s trailer.
NEW IN OUR VIRTUAL CINEMA

CONTINUING IN OUR VIRTUAL CINEMA:

Good fortune and prosperity are guaranteed to the man who retrieves it. This time, Petrunya dives into the water on a whim and manages to grab the cross before the others. Her competitors are furious – how dare a woman take part in their ritual? All hell breaks loose, but Petrunya holds her ground. She won her cross and will not give it up.” (Outsider Pictures) This film will be available to watch on your computer or mobile device or via your smart TV via mirroring/casting. Click the image below to watch the trailer and reserve 72 hour access for $12.
To read more about all the films that are still available in our Virtual Cinema, please visit our WEBSITE. Several critically acclaimed films and audience favorites are still available! Here’s a LINK with a video I made about how Virtual Cinema works.
Our Virtual Cinema is slowing down, but we still want to bring new films now and again that deserve to be seen! We’re working on securing a couple more titles, but for sure on August 13, we’ll bring the brilliantly strange new Polish film NEVER GONNA SNOW AGAIN. On August 20, we’ll start DRAMARAMA (there’s no trailer for this film just yet, but here’s some coverage from VARIETY). More titles are on the way…stay tuned!

The film is based on the director Max Kaplan’s high school experience and his time playing in the Dayton psych band Nudists on Strike. HAWAII boasts an incredible compilation soundtrack by both popular and local artists including Summer Salt, King Shelter, Surf Team, Nudists on Strike, and Sister Owsley. Two of Kaplan’s freshman shorts, GET THE F*CK TO CHURCH and SONG OF SONGS will also be shown. After the screenings there will be a Q&A with the cast and crew of HAWAII, actress Erika Bierman, director Max Kaplan and producer Savannah Webb.” (Luminous Coast) Tickets are $10 each and available now on THE NEON’s website and at our box office! Click the image below to watch the trailer for HAWAII.
A NOTE ABOUT COVID PRECAUTIONS. Starting Friday, June 25, THE NEON’s Board decided to make a change to our COVID protocols. Though every other row remains unavailable, we will only require one empty seat between parties sitting in the same row. As a reminder, All NEON Staff as well as unvaccinated patrons will still be required to wear masks…they are optional for all vaccinated patrons.
A CALL FOR GARDENING VOLUNTEERS! A couple months ago, while I was on my hands and knees pulling hundreds of weeds, a customer suggested that I put out a call to some of our supporters (who love gardening) who might be willing to help us manage some of our grounds. The corner of our parking lot (at St. Clair and Fifth St.) is in need of some major love, and I simply don’t have enough hours in the day. Is there any chance that any of you might be willing to come and volunteer a few hours to help spruce it up?
A farewell to Ian. If you’re a regular at THE NEON, then you know Ian Bonnett. He’s been working here for 8 years…first as a part-timer, then as a “third keyholder,” and now as our Assistant Manager. Ian will be leaving us this week. He had an opportunity that was too good to resist, and we will certainly miss him…he’s been a treasure to us at THE NEON. Please help us in wishing him the best of luck in his future endeavors.
Thanks so much for all of your support!
We hope to see you soon,
Jonathan

Lucky Lemonade Tuesday Night Free Concert Series in Troy

July 2, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

The Lucky Lemonade Concerts are a free series in Hayner’s Courtyard on Tuesdays in July at 7:30 pm. The theme of these concerts is current, regional, original music. Terrilynn Meece, Music Manager at the Hayner says, “This is our ninth year supporting our dynamic local musicians. It has been exciting to share these artists that are actively involved in the current music scene and helping to shape our regional sound.”

Tuesday, July 6 at 7:30 pm
Paisha Thomas Quartet

Paisha Thomas is a native of Troy and Piqua. As a young woman, she followed her dream to pursue music as her full-time career. You can find her in the heart of Ohio’s music scene in Columbus, Ohio but her roots here inform much about her soulful, bluesy, folksy songs that ring with the truth of her experience. Paisha calls her style “Miami County soul/funk/gospel.” She is a descendant of the Randolph Freedpeople, a well-documented Miami County story of black migration. Like these stories, the poetry of her songs can be cutting, as well as full of hope and power. She is bringing her songs, especially the songs of her ancestors, the Randolph FreedPeople, back home to Troy. She will be joined by Chris Shaw on fiddle and guitar, Reggie Jackson on drums and Paul Vineyard on bass and harmonica.

Tuesday, July 13 at 7:30 pm
Someday MorningLive

The musicians of the Someday Morning band came together in 2016 after a chance meeting at a party in Mechanicsburg, Ohio. Each had recently returned home after years of touring the country with different bands. Each had come back thinking about settling down in Ohio. It did not take long after the party for them to realize that this chance meeting could be the start of something they were looking for. They call themselves Someday Morning and describe themselves as:
“A four-piece band from small town Ohio with nothing to prove and nothing to lose. Great story telling with simple arrangements and melodies that go down as easy…It’s country, it’s rock, but at its core it’s just a group of blue-collar guys doing what they love.”
Someday Morning is their passion project. Troy Brown plays guitar, Reed Jones is lead guitar, mandolin, banjo and Jordan Powell plays bass and keys with Dann Burd on percussion.

Tuesday, July 20 at 7:30 pm
Berachah Valley

Berachah Valley has been playing bluegrass together in our area for over 16 years. Their sound is associated with tight female vocal harmonies and exceptional musical talent. Berachah Valley is what we have come to associate as the traditional southern Ohio bluegrass style. They have performed around this half of the country at every festival you can imagine and opened for so many talents such as Rhonda Vincent, Pine Mountain Railroad, Paul Williams and the Victory Trio, Joe Mullins and the Radio Ramblers and many more. In 2021 they were recognized on a national level and were asked to be the bluegrass behind the new movie, “Mayberry Man.” It has been an exciting year for the Miami County band. We are fortunate to share it with them. This six-piece band includes the harmonies of Cathy Baker, Michelle Edester, Leisa Hinkle and Larry Collins. You will find Cathy on guitar, Michelle on mandolin, Becky Meyers on banjo, Leisa on percussion and Larry on stand-up bass.

This talented band is a staple of bluegrass in our area and has been playing here for over 16 years. In 2021 they were recognized on a national level and were asked to be the bluegrass behind the new movie, “Mayberry Man.” It has been an exciting year for the Miami County band. We are fortunate to share it with them.

Tuesday, July 27 at 7:30 pm
Alyssa Hanson

Alyssa Hanson is very involved in the Dayton music scene. At one time she was the host of Mick Montgomery’s “Musician’s Co-op.” You will find her performing throughout the area at places like Yellow Cab, Dayton Music Fest, Piqua Arts Council and Moeller Brew Barn. A classically trained vocalist, she studied at Lee University in Tennessee. Eventually she made her way to Nashville and developed her own soulful-folk style with a bit of Broadway around the edges. She was co-writer and lead singer for Red In The Water on the album, “Chasing Change” in 2017. Alyssa will be performing as a duo for our final Lucky Lemonade Concert of the season. Her brother Tyler Hanson will join her on vocals and guitar.

Alyssa Hanson is active in the Dayton music scene and has her own soulful style. She is a classically trained musician with a dose of Nashville and a bit of Broadway around the edges.

The Troy-Hayner Cultural Center is proudly supported by the citizens of the Troy City School District through a local tax levy and generous gifts to the Friends of Hayner. Special thanks to the Friends of Hayner for helping support this community concert series. Grand Opening Celebration For Lord of the Wingz BaldHead Tones Kitchen

July 1, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

Steve Earnesto first started cooking wings at home and then began selling them to friends and was cooking at a local bar. The rave reviews of his wings inspired him to open his own place.  His buddy Chef Baldhead Tone had earned a reputation for making awesome taco’s on Gettysburg.

So in June they joined forces and opened  Lord of the Wingz and BaldHead Tone’s Kitchen in a strip center at 6556 Union Rd.  They are open Tuesday-Saturday 11am-9pm.

BaldHead Tone and Steve on opening day.

Talking with the manager Stephanie, she shared that some of their best sellers include the honey lemon pepper wings, the jerk chicken tacos and the Lord’s Mega Platter that comes with chicken chunks with your choice of sauce, fried potatoes, 2 fried corn and a sweet Hawaiian roll.

They are celebrating their grand opening this Saturday, July 3rd from 2-8pm with a family friendly celebration that includes a bouncy house, vendors that will feature slushies, desserts,
t-shirts and more.

There is also a 60 seat banquet room available to guests at no cost with food purchase. Future plans include adding a liquor license for the restaurant.
