10th Annual Bourbon Heritage Month Opening Toast

August 31, 2021 By Dayton937

10 years ago, we focused our attention on becoming a true Bourbon Bar. One that Joe dreamed of long before everyone and their brother started chasing bottles and hoarding limited releases. Things have changed dramatically over the past 10 years, including our growing space and selection here in Dayton.
In September 1964, Congress declared Bourbon America’s ‘Native Spirit’. As a way to honor this bill in 2007 the US Senate declared September ‘National Bourbon Heritage Month’. Now we celebrate the whole month with special releases and tastings. Come down and join us in toasting to the month long celebration!
Get a first look at all the special bottles we have coming up and share a drink with our staff! Hope to see you there!
**Also keep your eyes peeled for special tastings and events throughout the month www.centurybardayton.eventbrite.com

Mornings at Seven at Dayton Theatre Guild

August 30, 2021 By Dayton937

This 1939 comedy tells the story of four aging sisters who live in a small mid-western town, and their long-standing sibling rivalries. Three of them — Ida, Cora and Arry — have lived next door to each other for fifty years, and Esther, the eldest, lives only a few blocks away. We quickly learn that living so close to one another has taken its toll. Some start to question their lives and decide to make some changes before it’s too late. In 1980, MORNING’S AT SEVEN was nominated for the Tony award for Best Revival of a Play.

Rustic” ARTery Members Exhibition Opens Friday

August 30, 2021 By Dayton937

The ARTery Gallery at Front Street invites you to come see our New ”RUSTIC” Members Exhibition on display starting this First Friday through October.  Meet the Gallery’s NEW Visiting Artist for September, Leah Mendenhall, a very talented local acrylic and oil painter.

The Gallery’s Highlighted artist this Month is Sarah Maxwell. Maxwell is a perfectionist when it comes to her art as she is meticulous in her various techniques and in her attention to detail.  The artist shared she is also an introvert, so it is difficult for her to meet new people and make friends, but she is anxious to share her work and passions with the world, and also to empower and encourage others through it.

Maxwell is passionate about saving endangered animals and features them in many of her artworks in order to call attention to our responsibility to protect and try to ensure their survival.  This artist also features animals in her current series of paintings to help enlighten and educate the public regarding a disorder that is close to her heart, Dyslexia.   Sarah didn’t know what it was until high school when she herself was diagnosed with it.  This series means a lot to her because through her work, she shares various challenges people with dyslexia may struggle with, and shares strengths that might have been overlooked. Maxwell said, “For example, Did you know that people with dyslexia have a heightened sense of hearing, and they have very strong skills for 3D thinking?”

SONY DSC

This 24”x 30” acrylic painting is entitled “Dyslexia: Speech”,  The giraffes represent how dyslexia can make it difficult to say things properly.  You may stutter, or not know what to say and find yourself tongue tied so to speak.  The giraffes are trying to be silly and have fun with it so they feel less anxious, but sometimes in real life, it can be quite annoying and embarrassing. The struggle is real.  Although Dyslexia has a host of challenges, Sarah also hopes her dyslexia paintings will not only bring awareness and understanding of the condition, but also to encourage and offer hope to those who struggle with the disorder that may also have heightened gifts and abilities in other areas.

Maxwell earned a BFA from the University of Cincinnati College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP) in 2016, and re-located to Dayton after graduation.  Her work has been featured in several juried shows including the Evendale Fine Art Exhibit (Cincinnati) for the past 4 years, the Rosewood Art Center (Kettering), and the Studio Door (San Diego) where she won Best in Show for her “Tower” drawing.  She was also Runner Up for her design on the Fat Head Brewery Headhunter Commemorative Glass competition in 2018.   Come meet Sarah Maxwell and see her fantastic work in September at the ARTery Gallery at Front Street in September.

The ARTery Gallery at Front Street currently has 16 member artists and artisans, and hosts a variety of work from Jewelry and Ceramics to Textile art, Printmaking, Sculpture, Painting, Photography, and Digital Art.  The ARTery Gallery is located in the Front Street Bldg, Door B-C, 3rd Floor, and OPEN 1st Friday from 5-9pm,  and also 3rd Sunday from 11am-4pm.

Sound Valley Summer Music is Today!

August 28, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

“I think we’re all starving for connection and music is a powerful vehicle to bring people together” Zac Pitts, co-owner of Sound Valley said. “Live music came to a screeching halt when the pandemic started and I think the world realized just how much we took the experience for granted. Music just helps you feel better, especially when it’s live and in the moment”.

A portion of the event’s proceeds will benefit The Greater Dayton Brain Health Foundation. The organization helps provide counsel and financial support to ensure ready access to brain health services, delivery of effective brain health treatment and support services, and collaboration among systems impacting people with a brain illness.

The event also aims to bring the community together for a day long celebration of people who make music in the local area. The music festival will feature 13 local bands including: Jetty Bones, Nightbeast, The Raging Nathans, K. Carter, Freakquency, Business Casuals, Nasty Bingo, The Luv Loss Experiment, Speaking Suns, Bundy & The Spins, Jeremy Street, Gabe Maas & The Bruins and All Hallowed.

“This event is meant to connect those who want to continue taking Dayton’s music scene to the next level.” Pitts said. “There will be two stages (both outdoor) vendors and food trucks throughout the day to keep hungry fans happy!”

Tickets are $20 in advance with an opportunity to save even more when you purchase couples or group tickets! Gates open at 4pm with music starting at 4:30pm.

Discounted presale tickets can be purchased at: https://www.soundvalleydayton.com/a/2147488069/eXXpRfnf

RTA Moves To Cashless On-Board Payment System

August 27, 2021 By Dayton937

The Greater Dayton Regional Transit Authority (RTA) will be eliminating the use of all old system passes, paper tickets and change cards effective Sept. 1, 2021 as the next step in the process of migrating customers to its new fare payment system, Tapp Pay.

RTA stopped selling old system passes and paper tickets at all outlet locations in April, and discontinued the sale of Day Passes aboard all vehicles in July. Customers are advised to use any outstanding passes, paper tickets or change cards they have no later than August 31, after which they will no longer be accepted.

Tapp Pay, first introduced via the Transit app in June 2020, offers fare at a discounted rate through fare capping. Customers are limited, or capped, in the amount they pay within a given timeframe once they have ridden enough times to accumulate the equivalent of Tapp Pay’s promotional daily cap ($3) or 31-day monthly cap ($30). A single trip for a regular adult rider costs $1.50 with Tapp Pay, versus RTA’s $2 single-trip cash fare. Once a cap is reached, customers pay no additional charges. This means no matter how many essential trips a customer takes throughout a given day or rolling 31-day period, any additional trips during that period of time will be at no charge. Customers can use Tapp Pay on either a smartphone by downloading Transit app in the Google Play or App store, or via a Tapp Pay card. Tapp Pay cards can be obtained at any RTA transit center at a payment kiosk using a debit or credit card, and with cash at Wright Stop Plaza.

https://youtu.be/pCGFSVAaMZw

Funds can be added to Tapp Pay accounts at a payment kiosk at any transit center using a debit or credit card, or with cash at Wright Stop Plaza. In addition, customers can use cash to load value onto their account at more than 200 retail locations throughout the RTA transit network. This includes all CVS, Walgreens, Dollar General, and Speedway locations. A complete list can be found at www.iriderta.org/tapp-pay. Value can also be loaded online using the Tapp Pay Hub atwww.iriderta.org/tapp-pay. Any card can be registered to an account by linking it on the Tapp Pay Hub. Linking a card to an account gives customers the benefit of being able to see their account balance, track their travel and when they have been capped, manage their funds, and the ability to have a card closed out and the balance transferred over to a new card should it ever be lost or stolen.

RTA intends to begin exclusively using Tapp Pay for fare payment beginning Nov. 1, 2021. For more information, visit RTA’s website at www.i-riderta.org/tapp-pay.
