Archer’s Tavern Celebrates 12th Birthday

June 24, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

Dan Apolito

Archer’s Tavern in Centerville will be celebrating their 12th anniversary starting this Saturday!
Co-Owner  Dan Apolito says they created the week long celebration filled with special events and drink specials after they survived their first year in business as a thank you to all who supported them.  He shared that he still has 4 of the original crew from 2010 working at the restaurant. And while the menu has changed through out the years, surprisingly their top selling items have remained consistent over the years:

Sticky Burger
Wings
Fresh Cut Fries
Philly Cheese Steak
Pepperoni Pizza
They opened with 12 beers on tap and currently they have 28 taps. Back when they opened there were no craft breweries in Dayton and now most of their draft sales are brewed locally. Check out the beer list here.
Co -owner Mike Fullenkamp, who runs daily operations, and Apolito bothlearned the restaurant trade while working at Applebee’s and they along with one silent partner have created a success with Archer’s, adding a 2nd Kettering location in 2016.

The birthday festivities start this Saturday at 2pm with a Crawfish Boil!

They’ve flown in  Crawfish  from Louisiana, and will be cooking up pots fo Jambalaya, serving Abita Beers and Hurricanes! Get a plate for $10, after your 3rd plate it becomes all you can eat until the crawfish run out, which Apolito shares is usually a couple of hours
Monday June 27th – Pajama day! Wear your jammies in and receive a FREE kid’s meal!
Tuesday June 28th – Their actual  birthday! Cup cakes and Tiki Tuesday! They’ll be giving away  with free cupcakes and will also feature their house made pina coladas, hawaiian pizza and hawaiian burger!
Wednesday June 29th – Jazzercise Workout Wednesday 💪🏼
Thursday June 30th – 70’s Disco Dance Party – break out those bell bottoms! You’ll get to boogie with your favorite alumni bartenders! 🕺🏼
Friday July 1st – Christmas in July – which means CHRISTMAS MULES!
Apolito is quick to mention they owe much of their success to their great customers and staff.  Speaking of which, they’d love to add a few smiling faces to their team.

Ohio Drivers License Renewals Online

June 24, 2022 By Dayton937

Starting on Monday, June 27th Ohioans will soon be able to renew their driver’s license without having to go to the BMV.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine announced that starting Monday, June 27, drivers will be able to renew their driver’s license online. Here’s how it will work:

  • Ohioans will go to BMV.Ohio.Gov and click on the “DL/ID Renewal” link.
  • Customers will log in through the state’s OH|ID system
  • Fill out an application and upload a current driver’s license or ID, or a photograph, and one document from BMV’s acceptable document list.
  • Once approved, the credential will be mailed to the individual.

Drivers will also be able to transfer a title when selling a car person to person. The seller can use the Ohio Title Portal, apply to “Add Title” under their name. Once the title transaction has been reviewed and approved by a County Clerk of Courts Title Office, the customer will get a notice that the title has successfully been transferred to them and issued as an electronic title.

“Our administration is dedicated to improving and enhancing the overall customer experience for Ohioans needing to visit the BMV by providing access to innovative options that better meet their needs,” DeWine said in a statement. “In just a few days, Ohioans will be able to renew their driver’s license online, which marks another major milestone in our mission to offer more online services to citizens when they are interacting with the state.”

Starting July 11, a driving knowledge test will be available online in order to get a temporary permit.

Miamisburg Shop Serves Up Coffee & Comic Books

June 24, 2022 By Dayton937

Owners Adam and Erin Remillard have created a space that celebrates the nostalgia and excitement inherent in the pop culture world of comic books.  Their store, located in historic Miamisburg across from The Plaza Theatre, offers a huge selection of new release, back issue, and collector comics, in addition to trades, graphic novels, and manga for customers of all interests.

They bought the building of Feb 2020 and hoped to open soon after, but in March the pandemic hit and supply chain issues created huge delays. It took them over two years, but they finally opened Monocle Comics & Coffeein March of this year.

Adam, who grew up in Miamisburg, shared “We wanted to have a place where people wanted to come in and actually stay in the shop. So, for us, we’re big coffee drinkers. We’ve always loved coffee. So it kind of made sense to incorporate the coffee world, have a cafe feel to it, but also have the comics piece where people want to come and get their comics, maybe stay in the shop, get a coffee, read their comics. And we really wanted to be that community.”

Erin definitely has her focus on the coffee side of the house. They serve up a variety of fair trade organic coffee, espresso and frappes and sweet treats.  A large lounge area toward the back of the store provides comfortable seating for customers to enjoy constant showings of the best in superhero, sci-fi, fantasy, and pop-culture related movies, TV shows, and documentaries.

Cannes Hit ELVIS and Crowd-Pleasing PHANTOM OF THE OPEN at The Neon

June 21, 2022 By Jonathan McNeal

We’ve got to keep moving. If you still need to see the wonderful Sundance-winning comedy CHA CHA REAL SMOOTH – you’ve only got a few more chances. We found a way to keep EIFFEL for a few screenings over the weekend…but June 26 will be its last day. Baz Luhrmann’s ELVIS opens Thursday night and the crowd-pleasing golf comedy THE PHANTOM OF THE OPEN (which is based on a true story) starts Friday.

Be sure to check out the trailers below for WILDHOOD (which is currently rated “100% Fresh” on rottentomatoes) and KINKY BOOTS (the uplifting musical that has quite a large fan-base)!
On Monday, June 27, both of our films – ELVIS and THE PHANTOM OF THE OPEN – will be presented with open captions (where captions will be projected on the screen).
We’ve got a booking in the works for July 1…so stay tuned to our official website and social pages for an announcement later in the week.
NEW IN-PERSON ENGAGEMENTS:
Synopsis for ELVIS: At the Cannes Film Festival in May, ELVIS received a 12-minute standing ovation…and numerous critics have predicted that Austin Butler will be a part of the Oscar race next year!! “ELVIS is an epic, big-screen spectacle from Warner Bros. Pictures and visionary, Oscar-nominated filmmaker Baz Luhrmann that explores the life and music of Elvis Presley, starring Austin Butler and Oscar winner Tom Hanks. A thoroughly cinematic drama, Elvis’s story is seen through the prism of his complicated relationship with his enigmatic manager, Colonel Tom Parker. As told by Parker, the film delves into the complex dynamic between the two spanning over 20 years, from Presley’s rise to fame to his unprecedented stardom, against the backdrop of the evolving cultural landscape and loss of innocence in America. Central to that journey is one of the significant and influential people in Elvis’s life, Priscilla Presley (Olivia DeJonge).” (Warner Brothers) Click the image below to watch the film’s second trailer.
Synopsis for THE PHANTOM OF THE OPEN: “THE PHANTOM OF THE OPEN follows Maurice Flitcroft (Mark Rylance), a dreamer and unrelenting optimist who managed to gain entry to The British Open Golf Championship Qualifying in 1976 and subsequently shot the worst round in Open history, becoming a folk hero in the process.” The LA TIMES writes, “Rylance makes golf irresistible in inspiring true story! Rylance compels as the star of his own kooky fable,” and THE WASHINGTON POST writes, “A sly little gem grounded in a fantastic performance by Rylance!” Click the image below to watch the film’s trailer.
UPCOMING SPECIAL EVENTS:
THE DAYTON JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL is heading toward the finish line with three more films! The festival is back in person this year (and additionally being offered virtually). You won’t find these films on a big screen anywhere else in town…so don’t miss your chance to see them this week!
Here’s the remaining line-up of films playing at THE NEON:
Tuesday, June 21 at 7pm – 200 METERS
Thursday, June 23 at 7pm – I AM HERE
Sunday, June 26 at 7pm – WET DOG
For more details about all the films, click the image below to visit the festival’s official site.
For the last 2 weeks, in partnership with ThinkTV and The Dayton Metro Library, we’ve had really nice turn-outs for our FREE Family Summer Film Festival…but there’s room for more! Please help us spread the word!  Each week, doors will open at 10:30am, and tickets will be given on a first-come, first-serve basis. Events will start with Read-Along videos with Dayton Metro Library’s Ms. Winnie and continue with programming from the PBS Kids library. Children will leave each screening with activity books and other materials to promote continued learning over the summer. Parents and caregivers will also be provided with resources to keep learning happening at home and prevent the “summer slide.” These materials are courtesy of ThinkTV and The Dayton Metro Library.
Featuring episodic shorts from popular characters in the PBS Kids library, screenings will give an opportunity for families to enjoy the movie-going experience together in a budget-friendly way while keeping kids thoughtfully engaged. Each Saturday will focus on a different program. Here are the four programs that remain:
June 25 – “Jungle Animal Day” with THE WILD KRATTS
July 2 – “Be My Neighbor Day” with DANIEL TIGER – this screening will be preceded by a hands-on event on THE NEON’s patio hosted by The Dayton International Peace Museum
July 9 – “Exploring the Library” with CURIOUS GEORGE – this screening will be followed by a post-screening “hands on” event at the Dayton Metro Library Main Branch where children will have an opportunity to meet “Curious George” at 12:30
July 16 – “Nature Day” with NATURE CAT
Click the image below to watch this year’s preview.
We’ve booked a wonderful, award-winning film for PRIDE Night at THE NEON on Thursday, June 30 at 7pm – WILDHOOD – and tickets are already on sale! This film is currently rated “100% Fresh” on rottentomatoes, and THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER writes, “WILDHOOD combines the foundation of heartrending coming-of-age narratives with the feel-good elements of road trip flicks to create a delicate, not to mention visually appealing, sophomore film.” Here’s a brief synopsis: “In a rural east-coast trailer park, Link lives with his toxic father and younger half-brother Travis. When Link discovers his Mi’kmaw mother could still be alive, it lights a flame and they make a run for a better life. On the road they meet Pasmay, a pow wow dancer drawn to Link. As the boys journey across Mi’kma’ki, Link finds community, identity, and love in the land where he belongs.” (Wolfe Releasing) Click the image below to watch the film’s trailer. EVERYONE is Welcome to PRIDE Night at THE NEON!
After our recent successful screenings of ANYTHING GOES, many folks have been asking for more musicals…and now you’ve got ’em! Save the dates! On Wed, July 6 at 7pm & Sun, July 10 at 4pm, we will present KINKY BOOTS – beautifully captured from the London stage. On August 10 & 14, we’ll present 42ND STREET – also captured from the West End. Tickets are $12.50 each and available now! Click the image below to watch a short trailer for KINKY BOOTS.

Culture Works launches “After the Levitt” concert series Thursday

June 20, 2022 By LIbby Ballengee

Culture Works, which recently relocated inside the Dayton Arcade, is launching an “After the Levitt” concert series on Thursday, June 23rd. The series will take place inside “The Tank” – which is a very cool, new subterranean venue under the rotunda. The venue is a short walk from Levitt, and is accessed from 4th St, between Main St and Ludlow, down a stunning, new glass-walled entrance. The first concert features two talented original Dayton musicians: Anna Marie and Mariah J.

The June 23rd event serves as a “soft opening” for the series, which will go into full swing in July. These “After the Levitt” shows will take place on Thursdays from approximately 8:30-10pm. The goal is to add to the vibrancy that is already being created by Levitt Pavilion Dayton and add to the music ecosphere that Dayton is continuing to build. Admission for this series will be a small cover charge of $5 – $10 at the door, which helps pay the artists and production costs.

If you’ve never been to The Tank, it’s new eye and ear candy for downtown! The glass cube entrance is very cool, giving way to a graffiti-lined stairwell, into a swanky entrance donned with neon and a sleek bar area. (Alcohol is available for purchase by patrons over 21 years old). The Tank itself has colosseum-style seating, in an intimate, theater-in-the-round feel.

The first event celebrates a brand new album from one of Dayton’s up-and-coming r&b/soul artists, Mariah J. “Unfolding” comes out on Friday, June 24th, so this serves as a special preview listening party for patrons. Anna Marie, another rising star in the Dayton scene, will kick off at 8:30pm, which is generally around when things are ending over at Levitt Pavillion. The event wraps up by 10pm. Admission for this June 23rd concert is $5 at the door.

Stay tuned here on Dayton937.com for information for the upcoming performers and dates for this series!

The announcement follows Rucker’s recently concluded spring theater tour, which brought the three-time GRAMMY winner to iconic venues across the country he had never previously played, earning rave reviews along the way and setting the stage for a lively summer of music.

“With a six-piece band, he delivered a simple, straightforward, delightful 90 minutes of country and pop, with songs from his solo repertoire and from Hootie & the Blowfish,” noted the St. Louis Post-Dispatch of his show at the city’s Fox Theater. At Detroit’s venue of the same name, the Oakland Press remarked that his “potent” performance was “genuinely special,” while The Boot celebrated his “charm and enthusiasm” on display at New York City’s Beacon Theater while “showcasing his mastery of country music” with his “sheer vocal power” and “roguish charm.”
