McCoy on Movies: Minions: The Rise of Gru

June 30, 2022 By Tabari McCoy

Minions: The Rise of Gru offers more of friendly-if-not-familiar animated entertainment

“Fine, fine – I’ll tell you the story of my how the guy who voices me once did a sequel to a popular Jim Carrey he’d rather forget about!” Gru (Steve Carrel) finds himself flanked by Bob (left) and Kevin (right) in a scene from Illumination’s MINIONS: THE RISE OF GRU.  Credit: © 2022 Universal Studios. All rights reserved.
WATCH THE TRAILER HERE:

DIRECTOR: Kyle Balda

KEY CAST MEMBERS: Steve Carell, Taraji P. Henson, Alan Arkin, Lucy Lawless, Dolph Lundgren, Russell Brand, Michelle Yeoh, Danny Trejo, Julie Andrews and Pierre Coffin

WEB SITE: https://www.minionsmovie.com/
THE BACK STORY: While we know him as the world’s greatest supervillain now, Gru (Steve Carell) was once a 10 year-old boy who just aspired to one day be known as such. His inspiration? The Vicious 6, a band of villains led by his hero Wild Knuckles (Alan Arkin). But as fate would have it, for as little as Gru knows about how to be a world-class villain, Knuckles is just as aloof how his status of the Vicious 6’s leader may soon be up for grabs. For Belle Bottom (Taraji P. Henson) has her own ideas for who should be in charge and the rest of the crew – giant robotic-claw armed Jean Clawed (Jean-Claude Van Damme), evil sister Nunchuck (Lucy Lawless), Swedish roller-skating champ Svengeance (Dolph Lundgren) and Stronghold (Danny Trejo) – does as well.
So, when young Gru ends up in San Francisco with his hero facing the wrath of the Vicious 6, it’s going to be up to his minions to save him … If they can get their act together first.
THE REVIEW: Can you believe it’s been more than a decade since Steve Carell’s animated villainous alter-ego came into our lives? Well, if three Despicable Me movies and its subsequent two Minions spinoffs hadn’t made you aware, the lovable little yellow, goggled creatures have been entertaining audiences for a dozen years.
And, as much as I wish minions were real so I could have one or two of my own, the series is starting to become a bit stale as the bananas they covet.
At an hour and 30 minutes, Minions: The Rise of Gru isn’t a long affair – and for good reason. The story is a bit minimalistic and feels very familiar from start to finish. That’s not to say the film isn’t without its moments, however. The backstory of Dr. Nefario is entertaining and Michelle Yeoh as an acupuncturist with a secret life helps make Bob, Kevin and Stuart’s martial arts escapades fun enough and San Francisco feels as alive as it ever has in animated form.
That being said, there’s really no new ground being broken in the The Rise of Gru and it likely won’t win the franchise any new fans that weren’t enthralled with the first four films. Then again, it’s simplicity might help keep it light years (pun intended) ahead of the competition.
Maybe next time out, they’ll just think of bringing a ripe banana to the show instead of one that is starting to turn a little brown.

The following six rides are part of the challenge:

This is a well supported ride with several different distance options. Not only is it a great ride, but it supports a great charity. The ride is on July 9, 2022.

The Tour de Donut is a unique bicycle event, where your ability to eat donuts is just as important as your ability to ride your bicycle fast. The event is a mass start timed ride where riders visit donut stops and eat donuts. For each donut the rider eats during the ride (and keeps down) they have 5 minutes deducted from their ride time. There are prizes in several classes including a Tour de Donut championship jersey for the best adjusted “donut time”.

Join the Dayton Cycling Club for our 51st annual Wright Wride! On August 28, 2022, the ride begins and ends at Cedarville Community Park. Enjoy beautiful flat to rolling countryside with routes of 25, 50, 60, and 100 miles. There will be SAG support as well as mechanical support at each rest stop. Please note, to ensure the safety of everyone involved, registration this year will be online only.  No day-of registration!

This is a fun charity bike ride supporting four great local organizations – United Rehabilitation Services, South Community, Inc., The Alzheimer’s Association, and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

While planning is still on going for the 2022 tour, we still intend to bring back the highlights of our event that makes this event special. Whether it is the relaxing country side ride, the friends and family we ride with, or the eventful Biergarten that often kicks off afterwards, we from the Twisted Pretzel community would like to thank you. all net proceeds will go to the local food banks and civic organizations within the community.

The Wright Brothers 2022 Cycling Classic is a fundraising cycling event for local Nonprofits to raise money and bring awareness to their important missions. This is a fun, family-friendly way for cyclists of all ages and abilities to have a positive impact in their community and explore the many GEMs the Dayton region has to offer.

To REGISTER for the Miami Valley Cycling Challenge, you need to:
  1. Fill out this form and register as a MVCC rider.
  2. Register for each of the partner ride events for which you plan to participate.

Cold Cuts & Groceries Opening Downtown on Third Street

June 29, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

Kathleen Roll & Justin Simmons worked in Dayton bars and restaurants for many years before moving off to Chicago, but always knew they wanted to return to Dayton.  So when they recently moved back to Dayton they came with a plan to open their own business. They decided to open a store featuring a thoughtful collection of grocery staples & really good old school sandwiches in the downtown area.

Tony and Pete’s, which is named after their fathers, will be a neighborhood market offering fresh produce, grocery staples, cleaning supplies, laundry detergent, florals, and old school cold cut sandwiches.

Justin explains they want to offer epic old school deli sandwiches, they’ll even have draft beer and wine available.  While they are working on finalizing the menu here are a couple of confirmed items:

THE TONY: Turkey, Roast Beef, American Cheese, Lots of Shredduce, Roasted Red Peppers, Duke’s Mayo, and T&P Vinaigrette.

The Italian Chopped Salad with mixed lettuces, chickpeas, olives, tomato, oregano, salami, smoked provolone and T&P vinaigrette.

While not a restaurant, there will be a deli counter, where you can order a sandwich, pick up some great sides.  While it may not be on the official menu, Justin teases that a true Chicago style Italian Beer with true giardiniera
will be featured in the future.

Construction To Begin on WYSO’s Downtown Studio

June 28, 2022 By Dayton937

The lease for WYSO’s new studio in downtown Dayton’s Arcade has been signed, and a team led by developer Cross Street Partners will soon begin to transform 500 square feet at the corner of Fourth and Main streets into a state-of-the-art recording and production space.

To be named for Chuck Berry of the Charles D. Berry Foundation—which gave the lead gift for the project—the studio will raise WYSO’s profile among current and new listeners and allow the station to cover local news and culture more easily. In addition to the lead gift from the Charles D. Berry Foundation, smaller gifts from individuals as well a generous grant from the discretionary fund of The Dayton Foundation made the new location possible.

Luke Dennis, WYSO GM

“Having a presence in downtown Dayton has been a dream of ours for a long time,” said General Manager Luke Dennis. “And we’re deeply grateful to our donors for making it a reality. I thank Chuck Berry especially for his decades-long support of WYSO. His generosity has always made it possible for us to grow and improve, like when he gave the lead gift for our license purchase campaign that allowed us to become an independent station. He also made the lead gift for a tower relocation project that increased our potential audience by more than half a million people. He has always invested in WYSO in ways that help us build our capacity.”

The new space will be busy. The news team will use it to produce stories. The music team will use it to record interviews with local and visiting performers, among others. Dayton Youth Radio

Director Basim Blunt will bring local teens there to learn to make radio stories. And the business support team and WYSO’s governing and community advisory boards will use it for meetings. “Yellow Springs will always be our home,” Dennis said. “But not all of our employees and board members live in or near the village, and many of the people we want to connect with live or work in Dayton and Montgomery County. Downtown Dayton is a convenient, important place for us to be.”

Midnight Showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show

June 27, 2022 By Dayton937

The Fairborn Phoenix is hosting a midnight showing of The Rocky Horror Show on Friday, July 1st.. This will be a shadow cast production, which means a cast acts along with the film when it is played in a theater with screen-accurate costumes, sets and props.
Your first time watching The Rocky Horror Picture Show live is a little like losing your virginity—it’s awkward, requires a lubricant (booze works for both) and will only get better with practice. If you are  a VIRGIN to the world of Rocky Horror, here’s a little primer in what to expect. Usually, theaters will have some sort of virgin ritual which almost always only includes 2 virgins. It often includes having a V drawn on our forehead with lipstick.
Many of the audience will bring props, or in this case, they’ll have participation bags at the door you can purchase, while you’re picking up a beer.

Rice To throw at newlyweds Ralph Hapschatt and Betty Munroe at the beginning of the show. Many fans will bring rice, though there is concern it will harm birds that eat it (snopes.com says it won’t, but you decide). It also can beslick onstage. American Stage’s kit includes a bubblemaker instead.

Confetti or bubbles At the end of the I Can Make You a Man (the Charles Atlas song) reprise, the Transylvanians throw confetti as Rocky and Frank head toward the bedroom. Or you could blow bubbles instead — easier to clean up.

Newspaper* When Brad and Janet are caught in the storm, Janet covers her head with a newspaper, and you should do the same. Oh look, you have a good one in your hands. Take it!

Flashlight or glow stick* Light up the place during the “There’s a light” verse of Over at the Frankenstein Place. Refrain from using lighters — you have a newspaper on your head.

Rubber glove During and after the creation speech, Frank snaps his rubber gloves three times. Do the same in synch each time for an awesome sound effect.

Water gun To mimic the rainstorm Brad and Janet are caught in. Good thing you have a newspaper on your head!

Toast What’s an audience member to do when Frank-N-Furter proposes a toast? Throw a piece on stage!

Bell During the song Planet Schmanet — Wise Up Janet Weiss, ring the bell when Frank sings “Did you hear a bell ring?” (Shaking keys also work.)

Noisemakers At the end of the creation speech, the Transylvanians respond with applause and noisemakers. Go for it.

Toilet paper When Dr. Scott enters the lab, Brad cries out “Great Scott!” That’s your cue to toss rolls of toilet paper — purists prefer the Scott brand. American Stage’s kit includes a piece of plaid instead.

Playing cards* During the song I’m Going Home, Frank sings “Cards for sorrow, cards for pain.” Let the cards fly.

This list comprises recommended items to bring to the theater, but be advised that some props, such as the hot dogs and a water gun, will not be allowed.

Commit these scenes to memory and use them as a prop guide.

  • Wedding bells! (rice)
  • Brad and Janet get caught in a thunderstorm (water guns) while looking for help, so Janet takes cover underneath a newspaper (newspaper). Fortunately, Janet sees a light up ahead (flashlight).
  • Dr. Frank-N-Furter introduces his creation (gloves).
  • The Transylvanians welcome Rocky with confetti and noisemakers.
  • “Great Scott!” (toilet paper, Scotts preferably)
  • What’s an audience member to do when Frank-N-Furter proposes a toast? Throw a piece on stage! (toast)

Killer Queen at The Fraze

June 26, 2022 By Dayton937

Living up to the promise they will rock you since 1993, Killer Queen has won countless awards including “Worldwide Best Tribute Band” and “Best Concert of the Year.” They’ve represented Queen in Bob Geldof’s LiveAid concert, had a residency in the West End, and even scored a number one hit recording the harmonies for “The Real Life” with Fatboy Slim!

Now this wildly successful show is heading to Fraze Pavilion. Looking at their journey so far, Patrick Myers said “The concerts grew and grew and we’ve ended up playing and selling out the same arenas that Queen played at their peak. It’s been quite a surreal ride.”

Described as “Very accurate. Almost frightening… unbelievably similar to the original” – it’s A Kind of Magic how Patrick Myers channels Freddie Mercury!

Twin Peaks Sports Lodge Opens in Beavercreek

June 26, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

JEB Food Group LLC has done an incredible job changing the look of what was previously the Fox & Hound into a place that feels like a mountain lodge, complete with animal heads on the walls, antler chandeliers and 70 tv’s that will make it a mecca for sports fans. Located adjacent to the Fairfield Commons Mall, Twin Peaks will feature scratch-made food, 32 29-degree beers on tap – including national and local favorites and plenty of eye candy. With a large menu including  smashed and seared burgers in-house smoked brisket, pork and wings, soups, salads, tacos, manager Amanda told us one of their most popular dishes is their pot roast.

Last night I got to enjoy a sneak peak meal at the lodge.  We were immediately greeted by a bevy of  Twin Peaks Girl in barely there red plaid tops and short shorts and taken to a tall table and offered selections from a limited menu.

We selected a couple of  cocktails from their featured $5 list. The Don Julio Blackberry Rita was refreshing and slightly sweet.  I appreciated the one large round ice cube that kept the drink cold, but didn’t water it down. My dining campaigns enjoyed the tartness of the Wheatley Strawberry Lemonade made with Wheatley Vodka, Monin Strawberry puree, lemonade house sour, lemon juice and Sprite.

Other $5 options included a mojito, a Tito’s bloody mary and the Irish Trashcan, made from house vodka, rum, melon liqueur and a can of Red Bull.

During the preview we were able to select an appetizer for the table and  choose loaded fries with hickory smoked pulled pork. They  came loaded with  cheddar · pepper jack · bacon bits · green onions · pico de gallo · cilantro · diced pickles · smoky sweet BBQ drizzle · bacon ranch and appreciated they cam with tongs to make them easy to share.

For entree’s we shared tastes of  three different entrees:

SPICY MEATBALL PARMESAN

all-beef house made meatballs · marinara made in-house with San Marzano tomatoes · fresh mozzarella · Parmesan · parsley · toasted hoagie roll

PULLED PORK

smoked pulled pork · creamy coleslaw · pickles · BBQ sauce which came with a choice of regular fries or the sweet potatoe fries we choose.

SPICY CHIPOTLE CHICKEN

blackened · southwest pico · house made garlic mashed potatoes · sautéed broccoli

This is the 3rd Ohio location for Twin Peaks, the Texas based chain that was founded in 2005. “We’re excited to bring the ultimate sports lodge to Beavercreek,” said Twin Peaks CEO Joe Hummel. “With wall-to-wall TVs, fans won’t miss a second of their Bengals, Reds, Bearcats or Flyers, as well as every marquee game, event and fight. Plus, our scratch-made food and elevated bar selection offers something for every appetite. We can’t wait to open the lodge and join the Beavercreek community.”

On Monday, June 27th and Tuesday, June 28th they’ll have a soft opening starting at 5pm and come Wednesday, June 29th they’ll begin their regular hours beginning with lunch service at 11am. Weeknights they will be open until midnight and Friday & Saturday will serve  until 2am. It’s a huge building and including the patio can seat 314 guests. They don’t take reservations, but based on the number of people that tried to come in during the invite only session last night, I expect they will be quite busy right away. They also offer a 20% discount for military and first responders.
