Northridge Eatery Gets New Owners

August 31, 2022 By Dayton937

Back in the 1950’s, Charburger opened the doors as the first in a line of restaurants that would eventually becomes George’s Family Restaurant. Charburger was the place to be seen on the Dixie Strip and all the cars out cruising would pull around back for car hop service. After Charburger, the Dixie Family Inn took over for a few years during the 1970’s. Farmer Jacks followed and was a staple in Northridge throughout the 1980’s. Farmer Jacks became Southern Bell for a few years until George Dimitrouleas and his business partner, Chef Mike Giolekas, opened up George’s Family Restaurant in 1994. George sold the business to his Son, Dino, and his significant other Elesha in 2003. An expanded menu featuring Genuine Broaster Chicken, Broasted Fish, and Broasted Pork Chops was introduced in 2010.
Today Dino & Elesha announced on their facebook page that they’ve sold the business.
Here’s that post:
“To our loyal customers and friends. We would like to share the bittersweet news with you that we have sold George’s Family Restaurant after almost 20 years of ownership.
Don’t worry, nothing is changing. We will still have the same great name, same great recipes, same great staff and same great service that you allknow and love. We are very confident that it’s in good hands with the new owners, Steve and Sam.
It’s been a pleasure getting to know so many of you on a personal level. We’ve become friends with many of our customers and can’t wait to have a little more time to cultivate those friendships!”
They went on to thank their staff and customers and shared, “We’re not going anywhere. We will be sticking around for a lengthy training process to ensure a smooth and seamless transition. But, after that… we can’t wait to join all of you as regulars.”

Dayton Receives “All-America City” award

August 30, 2022 By Dayton937

Dayton is joining the National Civic League Hall of Fame in recognition of its police reform work and its four “All-America City” awards. The Hall of Fame award recognizes previous All-America City awardees that have implemented a community-driven initiative resulting in significant local impact due to community engagement.

The League is recognizing Dayton for community engagement surrounding the police reform initiative that was launched in mid-2020 and developed more than 140 recommendations identified by five working groups co-chaired by and comprised of over 100 community volunteers and members of the Dayton Police Department.

Reform measures resulting from the initiative include policies and practices related to oversight, transparency, community engagement, use of force, and recruitment. The recommendations emerging from the working groups were reviewed and accepted by the Dayton City Commission, with implementation complete or underway.

A Commission work session updating the progress of the implementation efforts will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 31, at 4 p.m.

“We are happy to welcome Dayton into the Hall of Fame,” said Doug Linkhart, National Civic League president. “The recent police reform initiative shows that the community is still embodying the ideals of an All-American City and is committed to the practice of civic engagement.”

Dayton Mayor Jeffrey J. Mims, Jr., added: “By utilizing several diverse community voices and partners, we re-imagined what community engagement in policing looks like. There is still more work to do, but this process has already resulted in positive outcomes. I am pleased that our effort has been recognized with national praise.”

The City of Dayton is sharing a video about the success of the police reform initiative. The video and others related to police reform, including profiles of community volunteers, is available in a video archive.

Dayton earned the All-America City designation in 2017, 1991, 1978, and 1951. The award honors municipalities demonstrating outstanding work in civic innovation, inclusion and collaboration.

The National Civic League, founded in 1894 as the National Municipal League, continues to support and recognize municipal civic reform and excellence. Theodore Roosevelt, one of the League’s founders, called on Americans to “be actors, and not merely critics of others” at the first conference on good city government.

August 29, 2022 By Dayton937

The 2022 pumpkin spice season officially arrives at Starbucks on Tuesday, August 30, 2022 with the return of the iconic Pumpkin Spice Latte (PSL) alongside other returning seasonal fan-favorite beverages and bakery items.

Back for its 19th year, the handcrafted PSL combines Starbucks Signature Espresso and steamed milk with flavors of cinnamon, nutmeg and clove to complement the real pumpkin in the sauce. The beverage is finished with a topping of whipped cream and pumpkin pie spices. It can be enjoyed hot, iced or blended throughout the season while supplies last.

Also back for its fourth year is the Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew, which is crafted with Starbucks Cold Brew sweetened with vanilla syrup and topped with pumpkin cream cold foam and a dusting of pumpkin spice.

First introduced last fall, the Apple Crisp Macchiato returns to menus with a twist, it’s now made with creamy oatmilk and Starbucks Blonde Espresso as the standard recipe. Inspired by the flavors of the warm and gooey apple crisp paired with a cup of coffee, the Apple Crisp Oatmilk Macchiato combines layered flavors of apple, cinnamon, and brown sugar with a spiced apple drizzle.

The Apple Crisp Oatmilk Macchiato can be enjoyed hot, iced and blended at participating US Starbucks location throughout the season while supplies last.

Bakery Items

In addition so seasonal beverages, pumpkin is back in the bakery case with the return of the Pumpkin Cream Cheese Muffin and Pumpkin Scone, both available for a limited time, as well as the the fan-favorite Pumpkin Loaf, which is available year-round.

Fans can also enjoy the new Owl Cake Pop, which combines vanilla cake and buttercream, dipped in purple chocolaty icing and finished with an owl design. Available for a limited-time only, while supplies last.

Starbucks Guatemala Casi Cielo Returns

Back for its 18th year, Starbucks Guatemala Casi Cielo, a partner (barista) favorite, this whole bean coffee is sourced exclusively from Guatemala’s high-altitude, volcanic Antigua region. This medium roast coffee features floral aromas, lemon and cocoa nib notes to create a smooth bright cup.

Starbucks Reserve Coffees

Also available at select Starbucks stores and Starbucks Reserve locations, such as the Starbucks Reserve Roasteries, are two Starbucks Reserve coffees, hand-selected seasonally from family farms and pioneering cooperatives, roasted daily at our Starbucks Reserve Roasteries.

New Starbucks Reserve Sun-Dried Zambia Ngoli Estate features a sparkling lemon acidity and notes of peach and ginger, produced by the Ngoli Estate in the remote Mafinga Hills. Starbucks Reserve Vietnam Da Lat features bittersweet chocolate accented with notes of dried orange peel and cedar and a caramel sweetness, anchored by the city of Da Lat (nicknamed “The City of Eternal Spring”) in Vietnam’s Lam Dong Province.

Dayton at Work and Play: Sharon Stolzenberger

August 29, 2022 By Bill Franz

ARTIST OF THE WEEK:  Sharon Stolzenberger invited me into her spacious Front Street studio this week. It’s on the second floor of the Annex Building at Front Street.
“I’ve been here for years” she told me. “I love the light and the space. I use this area for watercolors, and another area across the room for acrylics. The only problem with having all of this space is that there’s never a reason to get rid of anything. A visitor can poke around and see how my work has changed over the years.”
“The piece I’m working on here features a crow. I’ve been using crows in quite a few of my work for a few years now, and recently I’ve been doing a series related to prairies.”
Like a number of successful local artists (e.g. Jon Barlow Hudson and John Emery) Sharon is a graduate of the School of the Dayton Art Institute. After school she was an illustrator and then Art Director for Gibson Greeting Cards before opening her own studio.
Sharon works primarily in watercolors but uses stenciling, patterning and collage to create densely textured works. As I photographed she added layers to a small piece. After each one of her steps I found myself thinking about whether there was a way for me to do something similar in my own digital wok. I think I need to hang around the studio some more and let Sharon teach me some new things.
Sharon’s studio will be open this week during First Friday. If you want, use her special entrance – the green staircase (fire escape) on the back of the Annex building.

Five Rivers MetroParks Wins Grant to Restore Wetlands In Trotwood

August 26, 2022 By Dayton937

Land once slated to become a landfill is one step further toward a long-term vision of becoming a new MetroPark.

Five Rivers MetroParks and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) held a groundbreaking on Friday, Aug. 26, for the Spring Run Conservation Area Wetland Restoration Project in Trotwood. The project is fully funded by a $499,500 grant, just $500 short of the maximum amount available, from Gov. Mike DeWine’s H2Ohio initiative — which, unlike most grants, does not require local matching funds. Five Rivers MetroParks has partnered with ODNR, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Pheasants Forever on this project.

“This is a great example of how MetroParks staff come together to make things happen,” said Becky Benná, Five Rivers MetroParks chief executive officer. “MetroParks’ 10-year comprehensive master plan identified this area as underserved, and MetroParks wants to eventually create a new MetroPark at the Spring Run Conservation Area. A site master plan has been created for the area and, working with the city of Trotwood and other partners, MetroParks is gradually acquiring the means to make that happen.”

The Spring Run Conservation Area Wetland Restoration Project is the 76th H2Ohio project in the state, with most projects located in northern Ohio. “We feel very fortunate to be one of just a handful of H2Ohio projects in southwest Ohio,” said Grace Dietsch, MetroParks regional manager of conservation.

About the Spring Run Conservation Area Wetlands Restoration Project

The 550-acre Spring Run Conservation Area is comprised of two land parcels: the 190-acre former Larch Tree Golf Course and the 360-acre Great Miami Wetland Mitigation Bank, the property once planned to become a landfill. Spring Run is adjacent to the 2,384-acre Sycamore State Park — creating a nearly 3,000-acre natural area for wildlife habitat and open space protection west of Dayton in Montgomery County.

The Wetlands Restoration Project will create approximately 22 acres of wetlands on the former golf course property. Once complete, the 20-month project will have numerous benefits, not only for Spring Run but for surrounding areas as well — including improved water and air quality.

The project will:

  • filter pollutants from groundwater to improve water quality and drinking water
  • reduce flooding and erosion
  • significantly expand wildlife habitat
  • create additional public access to a large natural area for an underserved community near Dayton
  • expand outdoor recreation opportunities for the region’s residents
  • improve biodiversity by removing invasive plants and introducing native ones
  • provide additional scientific research opportunities

Acting as the kidneys of our ecosystem, wetlands improve water quality and help with flood abatement while providing plant and wildlife habitat. The new wetlands at Spring Run will store approximately 33 million gallons of water.

Five Rivers MetroParks has experience restoring wetlands at other sites, such as at Germantown MetroPark and the Great Miami Wetland Mitigation Bank. Spring Run, like these and countless other sites throughout Ohio, once had naturally occurring wetlands that were purposefully drained decades ago so the sites could be used for farmland. Spring Run has a high concentration of hydric soils, which are permanently or seasonally saturated by water — making the transition from golf course back to wetlands more successful.

The Spring Run Conservation Area Wetlands Restoration Project will include a variety of tasks, including:

  • Heavy equipment will be used to used to create shallow depressions and other  areas that hold water from both underground springs and rainwater.
  • Pollinator plants that thrive in wetland environments will be planted along the edges of the wetlands, and native trees and shrubs will be planted near the wetlands to create shade and wildlife habitat.
  • Logs and limbs will be scattered throughout the wetlands to create refuge and perching areas for wildlife.

The H2Ohio grant already has allowed MetroParks to purchase two pieces of much-needed equipment that will be used to complete this project and for ongoing management of this site.

“When Gov. DeWine announced $5 million in H2Ohio grant funding for projects in the Ohio River Basin, I knew it was time for something to happen at the golf course,” Dietsch said. “Five Rivers MetroParks is a conservation agency with a mission to protect our region’s natural heritage, so this project is a perfect fit for the H2O initiative and its goals to restore and enhance wetlands.”

More About Spring Run Conservation Area

Spring Run is located in the Wolf Creek Watershed, part of the Great Miami Watershed — the largest in Ohio, which provides water to more than 2.3 million people.

Five Rivers MetroParks purchased the Great Miami Wetland Mitigation Bank in 2008 and has since been converting the former farmland to a natural area. It now includes several different habitats, including 25 acres of wetlands along with prairie, forest and grassland habitats. The land is home to such native plants as swamp milkweed — a food source for the now-endangered monarch butterfly.

One result of MetroParks’ restoration work at the Mitigation Bank thus far: The area has become a significant birding site. According to data from the citizen science app eBird, the public has spotted more than 200 species of birds, some of them rare, at Spring Run Conservation Area — which is about half of all species that even live in or migrate through Ohio.

The Mitigation Bank also serves as a regional economic development tool: If an existing wetland is damaged, qualified developers can purchase federally required credits from the Great Miami Mitigation Bank. The funds are used to restore wetlands at the Mitigation Bank and support other projects in MetroParks. Because wetland banks are on larger tracts of land and are permanently protected, they are more effective at replacing the wetlands that are lost.

Five Rivers MetroParks purchased the former Larch Tree Golf Course in 2014 with a Clean Ohio grant and was one of first park agencies to take over a closed golf course, which is now an industry trend. Since the purchase, MetroParks has demolished dilapidated structures that were on the site but little else has been done.

The Spring Run Conservation Area Wetlands Restoration Project marks the first significant work to be done on the former golf course property.

Spring Run is located near the Wolf Creek Paved Trail, and several of the former golf cart paved paths are still intact. Long term, both are part of Five Rivers MetroParks’ vision to transition Spring Run from a conservation area to a MetroPark.

“The Spring Run MetroPark master plan creates an environment that showcases the natural habitats and creates a comfortable introduction to experiencing nature for those who may not be accustomed to spending time outdoors,” Dietsch said.

“Area residents are already using the area for walking, birding and fishing, and when this project is done, the site will have 50 acres of wetlands for wildlife and people to enjoy,” Dietsch said. “This certainly will be one of the most significant and impactful projects I will work on in my career.”

How to Visit Spring Run Conservation Area

Conservation areas are part of the nearly 16,500 acres of land MetroParks owns and manages. Unlike MetroParks’ 18 clean, safe parks, most conservation areas — including Spring Run — don’t have developed public access, such as a paved parking lot, or amenities found at most MetroParks, such as restrooms and water fountains.

However, Spring Run, 2765 North Snyder Road, is open to the public. Parking, including a handicap space, is available outside the gate. Five Rivers MetroParks locations are open 8 am to 10 pm April 1-Oct. 31 and 8 am to 8 pm Nov. 1-March 31.
