Dear Santa, All for I Want For Christmas Is A New Bike

December 19, 2022 By GreatMiamiRiverway

About ten years ago, I purchased a bike at a local shop and it served me well. The kind of bike you take out on short trips. I rode it all over the Riverway on our bike trail system. However, this year I joined with some friends for a 2-day, 200+ mile cycling adventure. I realized very quickly that my old bike needed an upgrade. We averaged 60 miles a day for the first two days, then 75 miles on day three. If I am going to do that again I will need a faster bike, and one with more comfort features.

Joyce and Dennis, J&D Bicycles, with Dan Foley, Riverway Director

One thing that makes the Riverway so special is the regional paved trail system. No other place in the country can boast of more than 300 miles of interconnected trails. It was almost fifty years ago that the first mile of trail was laid in the City of Troy through a partnership with the Miami Conservancy District. This first mile led to many other communities embracing bike trail development of the benefit of us all.  And while the number of miles of trails have grown, so has the number of locally-owned bike shops in our Riverway communities.

If a bike is on your Christmas list, or someone you are buying for – shop local! The bike shops listed below sell new and used and let you test ride them before you buy. They also do repairs and tune-ups, sell parts and accessories, and other bike related items.

To get help choosing a new bike, I visited J&D Bicycles in Troy. The shop owners Joyce and Dennis Ferguson patiently showed me five or six different brands and models, all of which I test rode. I selected the C:1 Hybrid City Bike from Roll Bicycles, an Ohio-based bike manufacturer. I love the bike!

So for all of your bicycle needs, support a local business! Riverway bike shops:

J&D Bicycles

Troy Family Bike Shop

Tipp Cyclery

Carty’s Bike Shop

Whitman’s Bike Way Shop

Spoken Bicycles (Ohio’s only bike shop where you can order a beer while you wait)

5 Days of Giving at Greek Street

December 18, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

Greek Street, which started out as a  food truck run by Chef Chris Spirtos then opened a brick and mortar eatery in Cross Pointe Center this past May will be hosting “5 Days Of Giving” this week.
For every customer order, Greek Street will donate $1 to the charity of that day!
*Monday 12/19- Washington Township Fire Department
*Tuesday 12/20- Centerville Citizens Police Academy Alumni
*Wednesday 12/21- SICSA
*Thursday 12/22- Ronald McDonald House
*Friday 12/23- Dayton Children’s Hospital
General Manager Doug Shie says they chose the charity’s based on staff connections.  Helping first responders made the fire department and police academy easy choices. Doug adopted his dog from SICSA and owner Chris’s family stayed at the Ronald McDonald house when he was born and at Children’s Hospital.   Each charity will be given the dollars earned on their day as well as a $50 gift card they can use as they like.
Shie also says they will be moving forward with support of other area nonprofits in 2023 and if you’ve got one you’d like to have considered email him.  He also shared that the food truck will be going out this spring/summer for community events.

Dayton at Work and Play: Ryan Qualls

December 17, 2022 By Bill Franz

After Ryan Qualls posed for me I asked him how he came to be a National Park Service Ranger.
“I started out as a volunteer at Dayton History. Then I started working for the National Park Service as a student employee.
One of my assignments after a few years with the park service was at the Wright Brothers National Memorial in the Outer Banks. Now I manage the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park visitor centers and the interpretive programming.”
I loved hearing that Ryan’s volunteering lead to a great career.

Dec 17th is Wright Brothers Day

December 17, 2022 By Dayton937

A proclamation from President Biden:

On Wright Brothers Day, we celebrate the ingenuity and perseverance of Orville and Wilbur Wright, whose aircraft expanded the limits of human discovery and lifted this Nation to new heights.

From their home in Dayton, Ohio, the Wright Brothers were captivated — “afflicted,” in Wilbur’s words — by the belief that humans could fly.  They researched and experimented, redesigned and repaired, and braved dangerous early trials.  When their Wright Flyer finally took to the skies over Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, on December 17, 1903, they launched the future of aviation and helped define the American spirit:  bold, daring, innovative, and always asking what is next.

That same spirit has delivered ground-breaking discoveries in American air and space technology for almost 120 years.  America has broken the sound barrier, put a man on the moon, collaborated to create the International Space Station, and achieved powered flight on Mars.  Just last year, we launched the most powerful deep-space telescope ever sent into space and gained a new window into the history of our universe.

We are also carrying on the Wright Brothers’ legacy by always striving for better safety and comfort in air travel.  Our Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is investing $25 billion to renovate airport terminals; upgrade air traffic control facilities; and improve runways, taxiways, and other vital infrastructure that make flying easier and more secure.  We have pushed airlines to rebook travelers’ tickets for free when flights are significantly delayed or canceled, and to disclose fees, like for checked baggage, clearly and up front.  And we are exploring new technologies that can decrease carbon emissions coming from airplanes.

As inheritors of game-changing innovations and torch-bearers of the spirit of American ingenuity, we have so much to be proud of and so much to look forward to.  We can lead the world in the technologies of tomorrow, change the course of human health and disease, tackle the climate crisis, and continue shaping a fairer, more equitable planet.  With shared purpose, unyielding faith in our future, and a drive to make the impossible possible, there is nothing beyond our capacity.  I have never been more optimistic about our Nation’s future –- especially in our skies and in space.

The Congress, by a joint resolution approved December 17, 1963, as amended (77 Stat. 402; 36 U.S.C. 143), has designated December 17 of each year as “Wright Brothers Day” and has authorized and requested the President to issue annually a proclamation inviting the people of the United States to observe that day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR., President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim December 17, 2022, as Wright Brothers Day.
