It’s Opening Weekend For Aqua Adventures

May 25, 2023 By Dayton937

The only thing better than a sandy beach on a hot summer day is a sandy beach with a giant inflatable water park on a hot summer day.  Land of Illusion’s Aqua Adventures in Middletown offers a large sandy beach, a massive 65 piece inflatable obstacle course, a gigantic water slides that stands at 36 feet tall. Everyone that gets in the water has to wear a lifejacket that fits. There are no exceptions to this rule and even if you are just putting your feet in the water a lifejacket has to be worn.

On Monday, May 29th (Memorial Day), get FREE admission ticket for all active and retired members of the Military. Just bring your valid Military ID.

Not a vet?  Use promo code ‘MEM23’  at checkout to save $5 off any ticket

New for 2023 are Corcl Boats. The Corcl is a durable, low-maintenance, double-hulled, extremely buoyant, polyethylene boat that will provide hours of entertainment as you paddle around, spin or progress through balance challenges.

THE JOY OF PADDLEBOARDING

As a sport, paddleboarding offers the same level of challenge and satisfaction that comes from learning a brand new game. You’re likely to fail a few times before you get the hang of it, but it’s all part of the experience. Taking a few spills into the water only makes you that much more determined to get it right. Learning together with your friends and family is a fantastic way to bond as you encourage one another to get back up and carry on.

Land of Illusion introduces the all-new Kids Wibit Zone. Now adventurers under 43″ can enjoy all of the extreme action of the original Wibit course in a zone all their own (life vests included).

Fun and challenging for all ages, the Wibit Adventure Zone inflatable obstacle course offers a healthy way to play and keep cool all summer long. Come challenge friends and family to test their strength and agility on this wet and wild playground. The obstacles include:

  • Rope Climbs – Race to the top and don’t let your grip slip!
  • Banked Curve – Test your speed and balance as you race around the turn!
  • Half Pipe – Slip and slide to victory, using your body as a boogie board!
  • Monkey Bars – A classic playground game with a watery twist!
  • Balance Beam –  Watch your step or take a swim!

When the competition heats up, slide, bounce or flip right into the water to cool down. Every trip through the course is a unique experience that can be enjoyed again and again.

Need some time out of the water? Check out Gameworks.  Play a leisurely game of cornhole after visiting the Sandy Cove & Aqua Lounge which serves Pepsi products, chicken salads, cheeseburgers, finger foods, and restaurant foods like Lee’s Chicken and Cassano’s Pizza!
Get competitive and challenge your friends to a volleyball tournament. Compete against your friends and try out new tricks in a fast-paced ping pong game. Just don’t let the ball hit the net or fall off the table!

Dayton Filmmakers Gear Up For Next Film

May 24, 2023 By Karen Kelly

Meet Michael Box & Patrick Bertram Hague – the founders of EchoEterna.  These two wizards are going to make the next big film right here in Dayton, Ohio.  I had a chance to chat with these intelligent and creative people, and between our musings about music and movie trivia, raising kids, and favorite bourbons, we finally got around to the nuts and bolts of our conversation – their film. The movie is a dramatic sci-fi feature in which renegade musicians navigate an illegal underground music scene, set in a near-future society where creative freedom is monitored by a restrictive authority class.

Q: How did you come up with the movie name of SpeakEasy?

Michael: I can’t remember who thought of it, but the way the characters in our story have to play in underground, illegal locations, hiding their equipment, and risking everything reminded us of Prohibition Era bootleggers. The title of SpeakEasy was with us almost as soon as our first words were put on paper.

Q: Speaking of names – what’s the story and significance of the name of your Production Company, EchoEterna?

Patrick: So, EchoEterna is a very very subtle reference to our first project, a sci-fi film. The story contains cryptic references to time travel, linked to a top-secret experiment with the codename “EchoEterna”.

We’ve always loved the phrase, and it only made sense to adopt it as the name of our company. It feels fitting in ways I’m not sure I know how to articulate. Lol. You know– it’s a reference to our humble beginnings, but it also feels like an apt representation of the types of films we want to make.

Q: Where did you two meet?

Michael: We met 20+ years ago at a Springboro church. Pat was a drummer in the adult service and the evening youth service. The band needed a bass player, so I put down my electric guitar and picked up a bass. For the next five years, we played almost every week together.

Patrick: This will sound odd, but we actually met at church. In another lifetime, Mike and I were in a worship band that ended up becoming pretty popular in the Midwest and a few other areas. I was a dumb teenager who happened to be pretty good on the drums, and Mike was a seasoned musician who knew his way around the bass guitar. Together, I can’t help but admit: we made a pretty sick rhythm section. We gigged around quite a bit with the band, playing retreats and youth events on a regular basis.

Q: Did you become interested in filmmaking together or did you each already have an interest?

Michael: I’ve been a music and movie nerd for as long as I can remember. I had dreamed of being a writer for Rolling Stone; traveling with bands and writing about our misadventures. When the movie, Almost Famous, came out, I connected with it instantly. Pat was working on a script and had hit a roadblock. He asked if I’d be interested in helping. I just thought it was a chance to help a friend. I never thought it would spark my interest in filmmaking, but once we started shooting, I was hooked.

Patrick: Before becoming filmmakers, we would always geek out and bond over movies and dystopian sci-fi novels. Separately, we both wrote fictional and sometimes non-fiction pieces in our own time, believing we were potentially capable of writing books or in-depth articles about music and film. Around the fall of 2009, I eventually had a realization that the ‘novel’ I thought I was writing was better suited as a screenplay. Not realizing that you could download software to format a screenplay, I formatted one myself in Word (yes, it was a F-ing nightmare). It was a 250-page, one-hundred million-dollar, bloated disaster of a story, but I wrote it nonetheless. It didn’t take a genius to tell me that I needed help, and Mike was the most obvious candidate to bring on board and fix the mess I made. To this day,

I am super proud of the work we put in (on our own time), and ultimately it became the basis on which we made our first feature film– One that we funded entirely on our own and shot on old-school Kodak 16mm film stock.

Q: You guys are working on literally everything about this movie aren’t you?  From producing to directing to raising funds and even to writing the music – yes?

Michael: Yeah, it is ambitious and exhausting, but we’ve always had a DIY way to our process. Sometimes that works well, sometimes we realize we need to ask for help. But in the end, I’m confident in our vision and our skills. So I wouldn’t really want it any other way

Patrick: Yes, to an extent. As for the production, we are the top dogs. And now we actually have ‘employees’ so there’s been a slight learning curve to delegation and being bosses (as much as I hate being a boss). So we’re writing and producing the thing, I’m directing and shooting it, and we are for sure the guys who are venturing out and raising the funds. That being said, we have SO many incredible friends and family members who are getting involved and pulling strings behind the scenes. Maybe even things that will never be accounted for, or credited in the film. It has a become a living, breathing organism at this point; one that Mike and I might not even be able to fully control. And that excites us. As weird as it sounds, that’s kind of the dream, right? As for the music, I would say we’re writing A LOT of the music ourselves, and overseeing some of it. We’ve pulled musicians from old bands, current bands, siblings, cousins– ANYONE who gets what we’re doing who can add to the vibe we’re attempting to cultivate. Similar to the ‘film collective’ we hope to create through EchoEterna, the songs and score for ‘SpeakEasy’ will definitely be a (hopefully) beautiful collage of our ideas mixed with the ideas of genuinely talented folks who we’ve worked with or encountered over the years.

Q: How hard has it been to find actors who actually can play music or musicians who can actually act?

Michael: WEIRDLY, two of our shortlisted actors responded to our casting call almost immediately. That experience set us up to believe it was going to be easy. Excuse me while I laugh my ass off… It’s been VERY. DIFFICULT.

Patrick: Obviously, we don’t have the budget to hire name actors who we can pay to be given lessons on their characters’ respective instruments, and then pay to spend weeks or months of rehearsal time to make sure they operate as a BAND, let alone how they operate as CHARACTERS who need to seem as if they’ve been in a band together for years. Bottom line: casting this project has been an interesting ride, and there were certainly times when we’d stay up late with a bottle of bourbon wondering if it was even possible. Fortunately, we are beyond happy with our shortlisted actors for the main band. Super happy with their dedication and progress so far.

These two are serious, talented, and motivated filmmakers.  They are working on funding the project (along with everything else that goes into this) – not to mention they both have families and full-time gigs  (Patrick is the drummer in the popular Dream-Pop band MOIRA and Michael is a supervisor at Mary Haven Youth Center, a division of the Warren County Juvenile Court).  One question I forgot to ask: do they ever sleep?

Quest To Find The Long Lost $10 Lunch

May 24, 2023 By Bryan Suddith

I am cheap. Frugal. Especially lunch. I am not looking for fine dining and I am not checking the consistency of size in my diced onions. I am looking for some protein and carbs to get me through the afternoon. Even the cheap Chinese buffets are $11 or more for lunch. Inflation is testing restaurant owners and wallet conscious diners alike.

10 years ago you could find a $10 lunch pretty easily. In this post-COVID new Downtown Dayton era the $10 lunch is hard to come by while simultaneously avoiding the chain fast food joints.

Taco Garcia Mobil food truck at Huffman and East 3rd has been my go to downtown since 2019. Their prices have gone up but you can still snag two or three tacos and a Coke for around $10 or less. My usual order is one carne and two chicken and chorizo mixed. The chorizo gives some life to the chicken and the chicken gives some structure to the soft chorizo. It’s the perfect street taco in my opinion.

If I am not feeling tacos I make a run to Falb’s. Located on the corner of Chapel Street and Kiser for almost one hundred years you can’t spend more than $10 if you try. Pork Tenderloin and a salad and a Coke, $10. Burger, chili and a Coke. $10. Sloppy Joe and onion rings with a Coke, about $10. Tell Joe and Dwayne we sent you.

Closer to downtown, near the Arcade’s 3rd Street entrance you can stop by Olive Mediterranean Grill and get a Gyro and a drink for $10. I get it to go with a side of hummus and pita, you guessed it $10. The falafel platter, $10. It’s a plate sized for lunch and sized for my wallet. This menu is super accessible for meat eaters and vegetarians alike.

I am most excited about what the new owners at Kramer’s are doing. Located behind UD on Irving the new owners made some changes that have put them on my map for lunch. Wings, fries, soda $10. Burger, fries, soda, $10. 7″ pizza and soda, $10. Every day they have a special highlighting the menu. A hot Italian sub, chips and cold drink, $10 on Wednesday’s always has my attention. Don’t get me started on the happy hour specials during the week. It feels like college again.

So tell me, when the budget is tight and you need lunch, where can I find you getting a bite for $10?

Lobstermania Coming to All 3 DLM’s this Saturday

May 22, 2023 By Dayton937

It’s become a Memorial Day tradition for many families in the Miami Valley.  On Saturday hundreds will line up at each of the Dorothy Lane Markets to get their fresh live lobster brought in from Portland Maine by Ready Seafood.  They’ve been caught by independent harvesters in the pristine waters of Maine and Canada.

The lobsters will arrive Friday night at which time they’ll establish the price for the crustaceans. Also, you should know that  they don’t start selling lobsters until 9 am Saturday, May 27, the line begins to form much earlier. Over the years, many have made their own tradition of Lobstermania, forming friendships with one another as they wait for the sale to start.

You can purchase a live lobster or if you prefer they do offer a pre-cooked option.

DLM offers these cooking tips on their website:

Lobster Boiling Tips

Boiling a live lobster is easy and probably the best way for cooking 4 or more at one time. Fill a big pot with fresh water about 2/3 full. Add 1 to 2 Tbsp of salt per gallon of water. Bring to a boil and add lobsters. Start the timer when the water comes back to a boil. You can figure 6-7 minutes for a 1.25-lb lobster, 7-9 minutes for 1.5-lb lobster, and 10-12 minutes for a 2-lb lobster.

Lobster Steaming Tips

Steaming live lobster works great and tends to yield a more tender, less messy cooked lobster than boiling. Fill a large, deep pot with 2-3 inches of water. Bring to a boil, add the lobsters, cover, and steam, about 8 minutes per lb.

How do you tell when it’s cooked?

Remember, sometimes the lobster may be undercooked even if the shell is entirely red. Double check that the meat is a creamy white color with no translucent areas. Give a good tug on one of the antennae. If it pops off, the lobster is done. You can also insert an instant read thermometer into the underside of the tail. It should read 135-140°F.

Pre-Cooked Lobster Reheating Instructions

Wrap lobsters individually in foil. Place in a 350°F oven on a cooking sheet, belly up, and heat until warm. Or, place the foil-wrapped lobsters on the grill to warm.

How to Eat A Lobster:

What to Serve With Lobster:

A baked potato is a hearty side dish option to serve alongside it. Served with butter, just like your lobster, it can be garnished with parsley or dill for some extra flavor.

This is another standard side dish to serve with lobster, because it’s also served with butter. These more basic options ensure the lobster will remain the highlight of the meal.

A Caesar salad is an ideal side dish to pair with lobster, particularly if the serving is a whole lobster, because it can be very rich. A Caesar salad is relatively light and the garlic and lemon hints in the dressing will pair nicely with your crustacean.

Cheetos Flamin’ Hot Smoky Ghost Pepper Puffs

May 21, 2023 By Dayton937

Cheetos is bringing the heat to summer with a new snack it says is “hotter-than-ever.” This latest Flamin’ Hot flavor plucks from the upper echelons of the Scoville Heat Index: Ghost peppers rank number 7 on the list, measuring around 1,041,427 Scoville Heat Units (that’s about 400 times hotter than a jalapeño pepper and 200 times hotter than a habanero pepper).

Instead of an immediate punch to the palate, these so-called ghost peppers are all about the slow build, starting off with a sweet chili flavor and taking roughly 45 seconds for the smoky heat to hit your tastebuds.

The iconic brand hopes these pepper-shaped puffs “take snackers by surprise and bring the spicy snacking game to all-new heights.” For superfans of the snack brand, these might look familiar. In 2020, Cheetos introduced a limited edition “Hot Pepper Cheetos,” which were also shaped like chili peppers and boasted an intense heat. The distinction between the two seems to lie in the specificity of ingredients — while the Hot Pepper Cheetos did not name any specific pepper, this latest launch is firmly derived from ghost peppers. This will also be the first flavor in Cheetos’ tongue-tingling Flamin’ Hot portfolio to boast a smoky profile.

New Cheetos Flamin’ Hot Smoky Ghost Pepper Puffs can be found exclusively in Walmart stores nationwide, plus on Walmart.com and on Frito-Lay’s Snacks.com from May 22 through August 14, 2023, in 2.3-oz bags for $2.49 and 7-oz bags for $5.69.

Nate Bargatze: The Be Funny Tour

May 21, 2023 By Dayton937

Hailing from Old Hickory, Tennessee, stand-up comedian NATE BARGATZE is selling out shows across the world.

In July 2020, the comedian teamed up with All Things Comedy to release his weekly podcast, “Nateland.” The world is a crazy place and there’s plenty of podcasts out there tackling the tough issues. However, “Nateland” tackles the meaningless issues that we face day-to-day to give listeners a much-needed mental break from fighting the good fight. New episodes release Wednesdays, with video available on Nate’s YouTube channel and audio available everywhere you get podcasts.

Nate followed in the showbiz footsteps of his dad, a former clown turned world-class magician, whose influence is seen on Nate’s 2015 debut special Full Time Magic and his debut album Yelled at By a Clown. Nate’s half-hour Netflix special The Standups premiered on July 4, 2017. In March 2019, Nate’s first solo one-hour Netflix special, The Tennessee Kid premiered globally with rave reviews, and recently released his highly anticipated second special for the streaming platform, The Greatest Average American on March 18, 2021.

Bargatze’s comedy is both clean and relatable, evident in his 10 appearances on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.” He also appeared on “Conan” four times, was a recurring guest on “@midnight,” and had his own “Comedy Central Presents” in 2011. Off-screen, Nate was part of Jimmy Fallon’s Clean-Cut Comedy Tour, and has done live shows for the troops in Iraq and Kuwait five times. In addition to touring the country as a headliner, Nate toured in arenas with Chris Rock on his 2017 Total Blackout Tour. He regularly performs at Bonnaroo, SXSW, Oddball Comedy Festival, Sasquatch, Clusterfest, and the JFL Montreal Comedy Festival, where he’s received critical acclaim multiple years in a row.

Nate was featured as one of Esquire‘s “Best New Comedians” by Jim Gaffigan, one of Marc Maron’s “Comedians to Watch” in Rolling Stone, one of Variety’s “10 Comics to Watch” for 2015, and as #1 on Vulture‘s “50 Comedians You Should Know” in 2015. His debut one-hour special, Full Time Magic, premiered on Comedy Central that spring, followed by his debut album, Yelled at by a Clown, which reached #1 on the iTunes Comedy Charts and remained on Billboard’s Top Ten Comedy Charts for weeks.

Baker Benji’s Shop Officially Open in Old North Dayton!

May 20, 2023 By Dayton937

The legacy of Evans’ Bakery lives on! This morning Baker Benji’s celebrated the storefront’s grand opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The first 25 people in the door  received one free donut or one free cupcake a month for a year.
“This is a dream come true for me,” said Benjamin “Benji’s” Stuckey, owner of Benji’s Bakery. “Ten years of hard work all built up to this, and being able to continue this legacy is just the icing on the cake.”
For over 100 years, a bakery has occupied the corner of Troy Street and Warner Avenue and Baker Benji’s is elated to continue this Dayton tradition. Stuckey and his team hope to partner with other restaurants and coffee shops in the area to support fellow small businesses.
“The community has come out in full support,” said Stuckey. “[I’m] not sure who is more excited to have the doors at 700 Troy St open, my team and I, or the neighborhood.”
Benji would like to thank the First Floor Fund, a program funded by the City of Dayton’s Dayton Recovery Plan and administered by CityWide Development Corporation, for the opportunity to make the baker’s dream a reality.
Baker Benji’s is a full-service bakery operating in Old North Dayton. Providing the area with fresh donuts, pastries, cakes, cookies, and more. “Because every neighborhood deserves a good bakery!” Baker Benji’s is the official baker of The Ohio Renaissance Festival and can be found at Ashville Viking Festival (late April), Celtic Fest Ohio (mid-June), the Ohio Renaissance Festival (September thru October), and Yuletide Village (late November thru mid-December).

Brian Sharp Shares His Impressions of Dining at Manna

May 20, 2023 By Brian Sharp

Manna – As we’ve heard over the years means “a substance or food miraculously supplied”. It would seem that Manna Uptown is just that! Spectacular food that seems to have been miraculously supplied. In the heart of historic Centerville there haven’t been a ton of food options certainly not at this caliber.

When you park behind the building you see just a glimpse of the tremendous work that has gone into getting this property ready for business. A beautiful entry, a lovely patio are just a taste of what is inside. Walk in an find a restaurant that appears to have been whisked out of a city like Paris or New York. A host stand is just inside the door and we were greeted with friendly excited hosts.  A large bar with ample seating and access to the patio. Then you get to experience a different feel in every room. From golden velvet banquette seating in the first dining room to the upstairs dining room and a separate meeting room equipped with audio visual equipment and perfect for private meetings or small dinner groups.
We were seated and started looking at the cocktail and wine list as well as the appetizer options. As the server offered bottled or tap water. After much discussion we selected drinks called A Walk Through Provence and a Wright of Flight and an appetizer of seared scallops. Cocktails were served as we awaited the scallops. The lavender and gin made for a perfectly sweet start to a great evening. The bourbon drink included mulled bitters and egg white.
Salads were selected – Mark chose a chopped charred caesar full of flavor and topped with house made croutons.
I chose a spring salad of baby spinach house made dressing and orange sections. A flavor sensation.
With our entrees on the way we started taking in the surroundings – the wallpaper is spectacular – even on the ceiling like a French fresco. You won’t believe that you’re in Dayton!
I chose a roast pork served with brussel sprouts pickled slaw roasted perfectly to fall apart with your fork. Mark had a halibut steak with fingerling potatoes and creamed spinach. The halibut was flaky and seasoned perfectly.
The pastry chef has outdone himself with the dessert menu. From profiteroles with chocolate to puff pastries with lemon icing and more.
Management was checking on every detail – service was exceptional.
The elegance and comfort of the restaurant means this is going to be a frequent stop for dinner, drinks or an evening on the patio. Lunch will be added soon after the grand opening which will give Centerville a great lunch option!

FilmDayton’s Small Role in Monica, Opening Today At The Neon

May 19, 2023 By Lisa Grigsby

As the Dayton Film Commissioner, our job at FilmDayton is to help films get made here.  We’ll get the call when a production team needs assistance, often with locations.

In June of 2021 we got one of those calls from a location scout on behalf of Varient Entertainment LLC. about a movie that would be filming in the area and needed assistance securing locations and coverage from the local sheriffs office for some street scenes.

In August of 2021 Variant used a room at the Red Horse Motel on Dixie Drive and some county roads in the Moraine area, specifically Diamond Mill Rd,  Manning and Weaver Roads to film scenes for the movie.

While the majority of this project was filmed in Cincinnati, getting several scenes filmed in the Dayton area is always a win, as we are able to show the cast and crew our local hospitality. Speaking of local, several locals were hired to work on this film   The Moraine Fire Department also worked with the production team, offering them space for hair and make up for the actors.

Another Dayton connection for this film, the co-star of the film, Trace Lysette, grew up in Dayton, running track athlete at Colonel White High School.  In an interview with Dayton Daily News, she recalled seeing “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” at The Neon as a teenager.

The film had its world premiere at the 79th Venice International Film Festival on September 3, 2022, Monica opens at The Neon today,  Friday May 19th  and the  screening at 7:15 will feature a special conversation with the lead actress!  The film synopsis is “a woman returns home to care for her ailing mother who she hasn’t seen in years in this tender portrait of family, forgiveness, and acceptance.”

Showtimes at The Neon:

1:15, 4:15, 7:15
Mon, Tue, Wed (May 22-24)

The film will open at the Little Art Theater in Yellow Spring June 2nd.
