DubPub Rolls Back Prices for 25th Anniversay.

In 1997, 7 gentlemen, all with varied backgrounds, joined together to purchase a vacant eyesore property that formerly housed a Shell gas station.  The Shell station was built in 1965. This historic, but dilapidated site would soon tell the tale of an iconic Irish pub.

On Monday, their 35th anniversary they are rollin back the menu to price from 1998 for one day only:

Owner Steve  Tieber sat down with us to tell us the tale of how the Dublin Pub came to be;

DD: How long had DubPub been a concept in your minds before it actually opened?

ST: Well, it actually started as a cigar bar.  We all had a passion for Cigars and Guinness. When we realized we all had Irish heritage in common we knew it had to be some sort of Irish pub, and that’s when we heard about an authentic Irish pub concept that had opened in Buckhead I’min Atlanta called FADO. This was the first Irish pub concept where the Irish pub was built and designed in Ireland and shipped over. Although that sounded amazing, we did not have that kind of money.  So we knew that we were going to have to build it all in Dayton. When we were looking for a location at one time we had looked at the second floor of the building that Ned Peppers is in. Jim Schaefer who was the owner had just optioned the Shell gas station which had been vacant for six years because he was interested in putting a drive-through on the corner of fifth and Wayne but he was having some problems getting that done. That’s when he suggested selling the property to us.  He already had a liquor license which back then the Oregon district had a cap on 17 licenses and this was one of the original 17.  It was actually a license that at one time belong to Plums which was the lower level of the Wiley’s building before Wileys moved over there.  So all in all we opened May 15 of 1998 with 29 employees.  So all in all we open May 15 of 98, but this whole process started in early 97 so it only took about a year and a half from concept to opening.

DD: As one time there were plans to expand to Austin Landing that just didn’t seem to work out.  Any future plans?
ST: We are always looking at future opportunities to expand.  There might be something in the near future.   
DD: What’s the biggest think you’ve learned from 25 years of running the biz?
ST: Three things:  
1.  Treat the staff as family  
2.  You must always be working in your business and creating new events and keep your menus fresh.
3.  Customer service, Customer Service, Customer a service.  
This last one is key. Yeah,  there are times when things don’t work out for a customer, but we are proud that we have 4.5 stars out of 3,300 reviews on Google. And one thing I always want to stress to our customers is that no matter what we will make your experience right if something falls short in their visit. I had someone text me know that they came in just a few days ago and sat at the bar for five minutes and nobody said anything to them while they saw employees standing by just talking, and they did not acknowledge him, so he left. This was at 4pm.  I told him that he got there at shift change and to always make contact with the staff if they have not been acknowledged because they will go above and beyond to over compensate.  Sadly,  in this day and age,  there’s a lot of things we cannot control we can train an employee but they still may decide not to do things the way that we have trained and sometimes we are short staffed when employees call in for sickness or car trouble. No matter what our entire staff knows to do whatever it takes if something falls short during a patrons visit. Most important, we encourage our customers to let us know if something is not to their expectations and we will fix it.

DD:  What can we expect next from Dub Pub?

ST: Future plans are to expand our front patio with a new design. We have had a hell of a ride with highlights of Sheryl Crow playing on our stage.  The Violent Femmes, Blue Oyster Cult, and Berlin have all played the pub. Quentin Tarantino had dinner at the pub after seeing “How the West was Won” at the Neon with the Cinerama wide screen experience.  Lots of great memories, now 25 more years of memories are on our agenda. 

 

A Walk in the ‘GARDEN’ for TheatreLab.

Mackensie King Directs ‘Secret Garden.’

You all know how much I love these interviews with local leaders in the arts. This time around, I was thrilled to catch up with Mackensie King of TheatreLab Dayton. They are bringing the classic ‘The Secret Garden’ to life at the Victoria this weekend. As a former elementary school teacher, I cant ell you, the story alone is magic. My interview with Mackensie went something like this.

JS: Hi Mackensie! How exciting to see ‘The Secret Garden’ coming to life here is Dayton. What made you choose this story?

MK: Well, first of all…hi Josh! Thanks for highlighting the arts in Dayton!! The Secret Garden is a story that transcends generations. It’s still taught in schools around the world and there is something so incredibly special about putting up something that is familiar to so many. And I mean the score… who doesn’t love a classical musical with sweeping Melodies?

JS: Right….if you haven’t heard the music folks…WOW! Just gorgeous! And although it is a world-renowned tale, let people know what the story is about.

MK: Ok. The musical is like the book but it strays from that path. It follows Mary Lennox, after suddenly losing her parents. She is taken to live with her uncle who’s wife also passed, and we watch this family deal with grief and learning to love and live again.

JS: And even though it has that sad overtone, there is so much to love about the characters and their hope fiiled plight! What do you feel people can expect from your production?

‘Secret Garden’ comes to Victoria.

MK: To start the music is stunning. All of the actors on stage have stunning voices and these tunes will stick with you. This show while classical, has the feel of a spectacle because of the large sets, incredible light and remarkable costumes.

JS: I know folks who truly think this musical is one of the greatest, ever….yet, so many folks have not seen it. It’s magical!

MK: It really is!

JS: So, tell us about you. Your involvement in the arts!

MK: Well let’s see I’m a Libra who loves reading… but seriously- I’ve been with TheatreLab since it’s inception in a multitude of different roles, but I am the current Artistic Director. I’ve directed many shows for TheatreLab, while also taking the stage whenever I get the chance!

JS: I think all theater people should try their hand at each and every part. I know you can sing young lady!! So, what is it that pulls you toward directing?

MK: I love the collaboration it allows. You really get to sit with the actors and come to know them through the process. Then we can take those things and apply them to the show so that the show has everyone’s prints all over it. I love when it comes together and I can sit back and see each persons ideas grow together into a beautiful final product!

JS: Yes, it’s all about the final product, and what folks walk away feeling. What do you hope people take from ‘The Secret Garden?‘

MK: After experiencing the loss of one of my best friends this year, this show has helped me look at grief in a completely new light. I hope the audience can take away that no matter how dark things can seem, there is hope. That we as humans can all at our core understand loss at some point and that if we talk about our sadness with others, we will feel a little less alone.

Classic Tale comes to Life this Weekend.

JS: That is the magic of live theater…feeling like you are part of something that can change you for the better!! What’s next at TL?

MK: We have a busy summer filled with classes, camps and more! Then in September, we will be right back at the Victoria Theatre with ‘The Producers!’

JS: GET OUT!!! I love ‘The Producers!’ I know you are all busy, busy with this weekend’s performances….anything else you want to add?

MK: Support local theatre!

JS: Bravo to that and ‘BREAK THEM LEGS!’ Thanks for meeting me Mackensie! And to see the show? What do folks need to know?

Downtown Boston Stoker Closing

We confirmed this morning with a phone call to the corporate office, that the Boston Stoker at 34 W Second Street is closing down.  The last day of business there will be Friday, May 26th.

We’ve got a call in to  Henry Dean, Boston Stoker CEO for a comment and will update this story as we hear more.

So many deals, meetings and friendships have been created in these walls.

Fashion & Food Trucks This Sunday

Entrepreneur Tae Winston presents a pop-up extravaganza this Sunday from 2-7pm at the Job Center on Edwin C. Moses Blvd. With over 100 vendors you’ll be able to shop for clothing, jewelry, homemade crafts, beauty lotions and more. 28 food trucks are scheduled to attend, so expect to choose from a wide variety wings, seafood, bbq, pizza and more. Bring your own chair and enjoy the music. The Drill Team come on at 5:30. and DJ  Oscar Pittman will be spinning music. The Food Bank will have some free groceries giveaways as well.

Tae has been hosting pop-up events for years and this will be her 7th Food truck rally.  She also currently owns  The Entrepreneurs Shoppe on Williams Street in Wright Dunbar and District Market on Wayne Ave which specializes in food businesses. Each of these shops offers entrepreneurs a space where they can pilot their small business, before branching out on their own.

Tae’s son Chace’s food truck will be at the event giving out free hot dogs.

Father-son duo Martin Sheen and Emilio Estevez re-release ‘The Way’.

“The Way” is a powerful and inspirational story about family, friends and the challenges we face while navigating this ever-changing and complicated world.

“The Way” is a powerful and inspirational story about family, friends and the challenges we face while navigating this ever-changing and complicated world. Martin Sheen plays Tom, an American doctor who comes to St. Jean Pied de Port, France to collect the remains of his adult son (played by Emilio Estevez), killed in the Pyrenees in a storm while walking the Camino de Santiago, also known as The Way of Saint James. Rather than return home, Tom decides to embark on the historical pilgrimage to honor his son’s desire to finish the journey.

In 2010 Estevez and Sheen began a bus tour to promote the film. FilmDayton and the Dayton Art Institute helped bring them to Dayton!

Now after a two-year journey to gain back the rights to The Way, Emilio Estevez has arranged with Fathom Events to re-release the film nationwide on May 16 on about 800 screens or more. The effort has led to not only a chance to dust off a 12-year old film, but also to start progress on a sequel.

Estevez says in an interview with Deadline says  “This has always been a very special movie to me. This has grown from a passion project into something else. This is a second bite at the apple, which is rare for a movie,” Estevez said. “It’s a movie that is now more of its time than when we made it. Going through and coming out of Covid, people want to get out and travel again, see the world and be less isolated.”

GETTING AROUND

FREE SHUTTLES – Free housing tour shuttles, courtesy of the Greater Dayton RTA, will run during the event, making stops near each housing option on the tour. Hop on and off at any of the shuttle stops to check out as many or as few of the housing options as you like. A shuttle should be at each stop every 10-15 minutes.

WALKING – Walking is another great way to get around – most of the housing options on the tour are no more than a five minute walk apart.

BIKING – Or, try downtown’s Link bike share! Rent a green bike from one of the many Link stations throughout downtown and ride to another station near your next destination.

PARKING

Middletown’s Women’s Wine & Chocolate Walk is Back!

Farmers markets allow consumers to have access to locally grown, farm fresh produce, enables farmers the opportunity to develop a personal relationship with their customers,  and cultivate consumer loyalty with the farmers who grows the produce. Farmers markets have fruits and vegetables at the peak of the growing season. This means produce is at its freshest and tastes the best. Every time you shop at a farmers market, you benefit the local economy. Locally owned farms and businesses typically retain twice as much money in the area they’re produced when compared to large chain grocery stores. When money stays within a community, everyone in that community benefits, creating more opportunity for growth — including jobs.

Fairborn Farmers Market

Main Street Commons Main Street and Grand Avenue, Fairborn, OH

Each Wednesday from May until the end of October, the Farmers Market opens mid-morning to early afternoon at the corner of Main Street and Grand Avenue in the Main Street Commons. Patrons can purchase fresh floral arrangements, baked goods, farm-grown produce, herbs, honey, preserves, and other related items. All vendors must follow the Cottage Food Rules and have a signed Farmers’ Market Agreement on file with the City.

The Market is open Wednesdays 10am – 2pm, except for the Last Wednesday of the month, which is open 3pm-7pm in conjunction with the Food Truck Rally.

Farmers Market Xenia

Xenia Farmers’ Market intersection of U.S. 68 South and State Route 380, Xenia, OH

A beloved community tradition is making a comeback to Xenia, thanks to a local downtown business owner. Becky Hawkes, owner of the FLOUR Bake Shop and FLOUR Box Gift Shop, has organized a weekly farmer’s market which will have a soft opening on Saturday, May 13, just in time for Mother’s Day.

Hawkes has coined the market, Xenia Farmer’s Market On the Square, since vendors will be positioned along E. Main Street, N. Detroit Street and Greene Street, surrounding the Greene County Courthouse. The market will run every Saturday from May 13 through September 2, from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. “We are very excited to bring a farmer’s market back to Xenia, especially in our historic downtown,” Hawkes said. “Visitors can expect to find goods from local growers, cottage bakers, including a gluten-free baker, and artisan crafters. All of these items will be sold at competitive prices.”

Centerville Farmers Market

The Centerville Farmers Market will return this spring and summer in its new home at Activity Center Park in Uptown.

The Centerville Farmers Market is sponsored by the City of Centerville and Centerville Washington Park District.  It will feature high-quality homegrown produce and products.

The market will operate on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. beginning May 13 and ending on August 12 at Activity Center Park, 221 N. Main Street.

Beavercreek Fairborn Farmers Market

This old couch farmers market is now the Beavercreek farmers market and will be held saturdays 9-1pm at Hobson freedom park. Starts may 13th and runs through October!

Shiloh Farmers Market

* Produce Perks are incentive tokens given to customers who use an Ohio Direction Card (“electronic benefits transfer” or EBT card) to purchase food. EBT cardholders can swipe their card and ask to withdraw a desired amount. The market provides tokens for the transaction and additional Produce Perks that can be spent on fruits and vegetables. The incentive is a dollar-for-dollar match to every dollar spent (up to $25) using an Ohio Direction Card at the market. There is no minimum purchase amount to qualify for the incentives.

The Big ShaBang Concert Features Exciting Regional Music

The Big ShaBang is back! The concert showcase is the brain child of 19 year old local music phenom, Eleanor Dakota with support from Venus Child Productions. Dakota launched her first showcase last fall at The Brightside, and is back with a “Volume 2” edition. This spring showcase features awesome five musical acts: Six Foot Blond, Crabswithoutlegs, Frank Calzada, Keita, along with Dakota herself performing.

If you are looking for a fun night out that of new, hip music (that’s early – over by 10:30pm!) – this is the show for you! Head over to The Brightside for another special evening. The venue has quickly become one of the city’s favorite places to discover emerging talent.

This particular event includes the Dayton Battle of the Bands winners, Crabswithoutlegs, along with special guest Six Foot Blond from Bloomington, who are making their Dayton debut! The show kicks off with three special solo sets. Prepare for an eclectic evening that will remind longtime Dayton music fans of a night at Gilly’s or Canal Street Tavern.

Aullwood’s 18th annual Farm Babies Fest

This weekend is Aullwood’s Farm Babies Fest at the farm at 9101 Frederick Pike.

Visit farm babies in the Bank Barn including goat kids and lambs. Welcome the Ohio School of Falconry’s Raptor Roadshow, watch these majestic birds free fly and learn about the ancient art of falconry during 45 minute shows each day. Enjoy performers from the Cincinnati Circus as they juggle on stilts and create amazing balloon sculptures. Take a turn on our stilts if you’d like to learn, or take a fun trip on the original Turtle Parade ride relocated from its previous home at Coney Island Amusement Park in Cincinnati!

Indian Lunch Buffet Now Offered 7 Days a Week

Specializing in cuisine from Northern India, Curry & Grill is celebrating its first anniversary today at its new location on Lyons Road.  Owner Hari Verma opened the original location on Fiesta Lane, across from the Dayton Mall in 2018, before moving across town for a more elegant location.

The menu includes curry and biryani dishes as well as specialties from the Tandoor oven, with chicken, lamb, seafood, goat and vegetarian options. All meals are made to your desired spice level: mild, medium or hot. Several flavors of Naan as well as desserts are available. All food is 100% halal. They also have a full liquor license.

Verma shared that as of today, he will offer their lunch buffet seven days a week.  The offerings on the buffet change daily and there are always vegetarian and meat dishes available. The lunch buffet runs just $15.95.

While they haven’t updated the buffet menu to include Tuesday, this gives you an idea of what’s available.
