City Commission Approves $2.1 Million in Demolition Contracts

July 24, 2023 By Dayton937

The City of Dayton announces the newest investment of Dayton Recovery Plan funds, following approval of contracts by the City Commission on July 19. Agreements with three vendors totaling $2,112,448 were approved for demolition services for 112 structures in round 1 of Dayton Recovery Plan-funded demolition. Contracts were awarded to: Alpha Demolition, Inc. ($626,420), Charles F. Jergens Construction, Inc., ($746,588), and Bladecutter’s Lawn Service, Inc. ($739,440).

There are approximately 670 structures to be demolished through Dayton Recovery Plan funds through 2026. In round 1, the companies will perform demolition in target neighborhoods identified by American Recovery Plan Act guidelines: West Dayton neighborhoods Carillon, Edgemont, Fairview, Miami Chapel, MacFarlane, Wolf Creek; North Central neighborhoods Five Oaks, Hillcrest, Riverdale, Santa Clara, and Southern Dayton View; and East/Northeast neighborhoods Old North Dayton, McCook, and Twin Towers.

“We are coordinating demolition in neighborhoods where other Dayton Recovery Plan efforts are occurring so that we can leverage and maximize all sources toward having the greatest impact in these areas and adjoining spaces as well,” said Steve Gondol, deputy director of Planning, Neighborhoods & Development.

The Dayton Recovery Plan demolition program is part of larger plan to demolish approximately 1,100 structures over several years, with additional funding coming from the City of Dayton general fund and the federal Community Development Block Grant.

About the Dayton Recovery Plan:
The Dayton Recovery Plan is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to address the infrastructure, economic and equity issues that exist in the city by using a data-driven approach to analyze socio-economic, health, and demographic data to make informed funding decisions. These investments directly impact minority communities disproportionately impacted by the pandemic and long-standing economic and social inequities in Dayton. The Dayton Recovery Plan utilizes Dayton’s share of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds. The $138 million award is the largest grant in Dayton’s history. For a plan overview, go to daytonohio.gov/drp.

Tai Chi & Qigong at the River

July 24, 2023 By Dayton937

Head to RiverScape for Tai Chi and Qigong at the River. Each hour-long Tai Chi & Qigong session will start with breathing exercises, warm up, and gentle stretching.

You will then be guided through flowing movements mixed with short standing meditations. We will end with a slightly longer guided standing (or sitting) meditation. This should leave a few minutes to answer questions or discuss any insights.

Qigong doesn’t require any special skills (other than breathing) or equipment (other than your body).

Lyle Lovett & His Large Band at The Rose

July 24, 2023 By Dayton937

An Evening with Lyle Lovett and his Large Band will feature an arrangement of Lovett standards, as well as songs from his critically acclaimed album 12th of June. Watch the band perform on PBS’ “Austin City Limits” last fall.

12th of June was released last year on Verve Records. Produced by Chuck Ainlay and Lovett, the album features a mix of new originals, standards by Nat King Cole and Dave Frishberg, and a Horace Silver instrumental, representing Lovett’s dynamic live performances with his Large Band. Coupled with his gift for storytelling, the new album continues to highlight Lovett’s ability to fuse elements of jazz, country, western swing, folk, gospel and blues in a convention-defying manner that breaks down barriers. Of the album, The Wall Street Journal hails, “Few artists can bring all of these moods and sounds into one place and put a personal stamp on them all; Lyle Lovett does that.”

Lyle Lovett has broadened the definition of American music in a career that spans 14 albums. Whether touring with his Acoustic Group or his Large Band, Lovett’s live performances show not only the breadth of this Texas legend’s deep talents, but also the diversity of his influences, making him one of the most compelling and captivating musicians in popular music. Since his self-titled debut in 1986, Lovett has evolved into one of music’s most vibrant and iconic performers. Among his many accolades, besides four Grammy Awards, he was given the Americana Music Association’s inaugural Trailblazer Award, was named Texas State Musician and is a member of both the Texas Heritage Songwriters’ Association Hall of Fame and the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame.

Dayton at Work and Play: Jesy Anderson

July 24, 2023 By Bill Franz

Stopped by Needle, Ink and Thread – A Modern Sewing Studio (2290 Patterson in Kettering) and met Jesy Anderson, the owner.
“I moved in here a few years ago” she told me. “I just live a few blocks away. When I was growing up there was an ice cream store here called The Dipper. There’s always been some store here serving this community and I’m glad to carry that on.”
“I sell fabric and other sewing items here, but my emphasis is teaching. I learned how to sew in school. But schools don’t teach sewing anymore, which is too bad. Sewing involves math, technology, engineering and more. It’s not just throwing fabric into a machine.”
“With teaching and running the store I don’t have much time to sew for others but I did take on a project for the Dayton Dragons recently. I made a new costume for Roofman.”

Upcoming Classes:
Sat Aug 5th, 10:15-11:45AM
Kids Sewing Basics – Get to Know Your Sewing Machine

Sat Aug 5th, Noon – 1:45pm
Adult Sewing Basics – Get to Know Your Sewing Machine

The Return of the Koji Burger

July 23, 2023 By Lisa Grigsby

Jollity has declared July 25 – 29 Koji Burger week at this Fire Blocks District eatery.

Created by Jollity Co- Owner Chef Brendon Miller to run during Restaurant Week last year.  It was such a hit , peole kept asking for it throughout the year so they are bringing it back for summer restaurant week.

You’ll get a Petite Caesar + Classic Koji Burger
& French Fries with French Aioli $25

According to Miller’ partner Chef  Zackary Weiner, “we never wanted to put a burger on our dinner menu because we didn’t want to take away from things we focus so intently on every single day,”

To make a Koji Burger, Weiner explained that it takes the same amount of work and craftmanship as it does to make a dish on Jollity’s dinner menu. He said the meat must age for three days before it can be cleaned and air dried for an additional day, prior to grinding it.

Earlier this year they shared plans to open a second eatery that features this cheeseburger and they’ve teased on their Facebook page, “Bigger announcement in the coming weeks.”

National Chicken Wing Day Deals

July 22, 2023 By Dayton937

Saturday, July 29, 2023 is National Chicken Wing Day!

The National Chicken Council estimates we’re eating about 2% more chicken wings each of the last several years. Consumers began preferring boneless-skinless chicken breast meat in the ’80s – instead of cooking the entire chicken – wings became an afterthought, said NCC spokesman Tom Super. Chicken producers began selling them to restaurants and bars, which could price the dish relatively cheaply and, because wings were usually salty and spicy, boost beer sales, Super said.

Here’s some National Chicken Wing Day specials to enjoy!

  • Buffalo Wild Wings: B-Dubs is offering six free boneless or traditional wings with any $10 dine-in purchase on July 29, 2023.
  • Fazoli’s: giving customers a free five-piece boneless wing order with any purchase through Sunday at participating locations.
  • Golden Corral: All-you-can-eat wings, fried chicken. The buffet restaurant began offering all-you-can-eat wings and fried chicken on Thursday – it runs through Sept. 10 – with two new flavors, Garlic Parmesan and Sweet Bourbon BBQ.
  • Hook & Reel has a buy 12, get 6 wings free deal.
  • Hooters: For every 10 wings purchased on Saturday, July 29, get 10 wings free, any style. Offer valid for dine-in only.
  • Marco’s Pizza: Offering 10 boneless wings with choice of savory sauce for $7.99 at participating Marco’s locations.
  • Pizza Hut: Offering Boneless Wings for 75-cents each for a limited time. Must buy a minimum of 8 wings to get the deal.
  • Popeyes’ Ghost Pepper wings deal -Get a free side with your pick-up order of Popeyes’ Ghost Pepper wings
  • Wingstop: Introduces New Latto’s Lemon Herb Remix
  • Wing Zone: Offering 16 Boneless wings for $10 or 16 Original wings for $12 on July 29, 2023.

From noon to 4pm Kids Lot will be keeping the littles entertained with arts and craft projects inspired by garlic and other activities that include garlic bulbs.

At 1pm Heather from Mucky Boots Farm will be giving a Garlic 101 talk from the stage at Courthouse Square.  Learn about the different types of garlic, how to grow it and when to harvest in your own garden.

Dayton Airport Parking Options

July 20, 2023 By Dayton937

The Dayton International Airport has just announced an  increase in its parking rates for two parking options at the airport. The garage and long-term parking lot increased by $2/day.

Current rates are:

  • Garage: $22/day
  • Long-Term Lot: $12/day
  • Short -Term: $15/day
  • Economy Lot: $5 /day

The Valet parking which has been closed since covid, when open runs $24/day. More info here.

Based on this news, we reached out to the other major parking option when flying out of the Dayton airport. Park-N-Go has just announced a sale on parking. Located just a quick four minute ride from the airport they offer both Economy and Full-Service Valet parking at their facility at 1140 W National Rd, next to Airport Toyota.

VALET Parking, regularly $12, ON SALE for just $9.99/day.

Just park up front, come inside to check in, hand them your keys and give them your return flight info. They’ll transport you to the airport and park your car safely and securely on their lot. When you return to the airport, just give them a call and they’ll have your car ready, sitting in front of the lobby, warmed up and with snow removed, if applicable. Your receipt will be inside the vehicle and they’ll load your luggage in your car.  With valet you also have options like having your car detailed and your oil changed while you are away. You can even charge your electric vehicle for just $2.50.

ECONO SelfPark, regularly $6.99, ON SALE for just $4.50/day.

If you have a prepaid reservation, just pull up to the gate at the right side of the building. The license plate camera should read your plate and automatically raise the gate.  If not prepaid, just push the “ticket” button, pull a ticket from the machine, and the gate will open. Put the ticket in a safe spot in your vehicle (not on the dash, as the sun will bleach it out). Then drive to the rear of the lot and park in an empty spot. The shuttle is automatically alerted to your arrival and the driver will arrive at your rear bumper within minutes. Pop your trunk so they can find you quickly. They’ll load your luggage and take you to the airport.

Book your reservations by September 10, for any trips through the end of the year, to get this great deal with promo code EM723. Reservations are 100% refundable if your plans change.

The Park-N-Go’s shuttle runs 4am to 1am or  until the last flight comes in each night/morning! If flights are delayed, don’t worry, they’ll stay open.

Bengals Announce Ring Of Honor Inductees

July 20, 2023 By Guest Contributor

The Bengals today announced that QB Boomer Esiason (1984-92, ’97) and WR Chad Johnson (2001-10) will be added to the team’s Ring of Honor in 2023. They will join Ken Anderson, Willie Anderson, Paul Brown, Isaac Curtis, Anthony Muñoz and Ken Riley in the Bengals Ring of Honor.

“Boomer and Chad were both exceptional players,” said Bengals President Mike Brown. “If you look at the statistics, Boomer has a long list of quarterback firsts here. And Chad was a superb athlete who was probably the quickest receiver we have had here. They could have moments when they just carried the team by themselves. Both players are very deserving of this honor.”

Esiason is regarded as one of the greatest locker-room leaders in Bengals history. In 1986, he earned his first of three Pro Bowl bids with the Bengals while leading the NFL’s most productive offense. In 1988, he led the NFL with a 97.4 passer rating and helped the Bengals win the AFC Championship. That year, Esiason was named the NFL’s Most Valuable Player by the Pro Football Writers of America and the Associated Press. Esiason ranks third in Bengals history with 27,149 passing yards and 187 touchdowns.

“I will always remember I got this because of the season ticket holders,” said Esiason. “They’re the ones who have the memories. They’re the ones who spend the money to support the team. They’re the ones who know who their favorite players are and who had the biggest impact when they were there. That’s not to be taken lightly or ever taken for granted.”

Ring of Honor Induction Press Release 2023

The Ring of Honor induction ceremony will take place during halftime of the Monday Night Football game against the Los Angeles Rams on Sept. 25. Fans may purchase tickets for all home games at bengals.com/tickets or by calling Bengals Fan Relations at (513) 621-8383.

TICKETS

One of the most popular players in NFL history, Johnson’s fun-loving charisma intersected perfectly with the rise of social media and transformed a quotable star athlete into a Twitter pioneer. Between his elaborate choreographed touchdown celebrations and bombastic boasts, he was one of the most electrifying players of his era. During his 10 seasons in Cincinnati, Johnson became the franchise’s all-time leading receiver with 10,783 yards, the third most in the NFL during that stretch.

“It means everything,” said Johnson. “To be shown appreciation for all the years of hard work is awesome. It’s a great honor and I’m very appreciative. I’m getting my flowers now while I can smell them. To me, this honor means much more than getting a gold jacket, honestly. This is home. The fans understand the good times and the bad times, the ups and downs, and they accepted me as my true authentic self. This is a welcome home – you will always be a part of us – and this means a lot to me. A lot.”

Live music back at the Dayton Arcade on Thursday!

July 20, 2023 By Dayton937

Last summer, Culture Works, presented a 6-week local music series in the Tank space, which is located in the basement of the Dayton Arcade, under the Rotunda. This year, the series kicks off again on Thursday, July 27, 2023 with the Dayton Battle of the Bands winner: Crabswithoutlegs!

This series and show in particular is highly anticipated by the community because the Tank is such a unique entertainment space, and the band performing is such a phenomenal talent. This space and series is “inspired by Centerpoint Energy.”

What makes the Tank unique starts with its entrance, which is located at 35 W 4th St, between Main Street and Ludlow Streets in downtown Dayton. Look for the walls of glass coming out of the sidewalk. That marks the entrance! Go downstairs to a space with intentional, artist c reated graffiti, and into a cool space with blue neon lights leading you to a theater in the round. It’s like nothing you’ve seen before!

Eleanor Dakota will kick off the evening with a couple solo songs. Photo by Fea Fotos

The band is a 9-piece jazz ensemble of very young musicians (age 20-23), several of whom studied at Stivers School for the Arts and are currently studying music on the collegiate level. Led by singer Eleanor Dakota and bass player Carter Griffin, the band has been wowing audiences since they made their debut at The Brightside Music & Event Venue (also located in downtown Dayton).

What makes this concert even more special is that there will be 3 live artists paining in the lobby, curated by Culture Works, and a pop up photo booth by Fea Fotos. A bar is on site for patrons as well!

“This is the first of several concerts we are planning for the back end of the summer season,” Libby Ballengee shared with us. She is working with Culture Works on the music booking, and is a big supporter of live music downtown. “We’re looking forward to having an eclectic season again with jazz, hip hop, Latin, and rock bands. If you’ve been missing Gilly’s – this first show is a don’t miss event for sure!”
