The Artistic Life of Aka Pereyma Exhibit Opens Feb 17th

The Dayton Art Institute (DAI) kicks off its 2024 Special Exhibition season by showcasing the work of Aka Pereyma, an American artist of Ukrainian heritage who lived most of her life in Troy, Ohio. The Artistic Life ofAka Pereyma is on view from February 17–May 12, 2024.

“We are thrilled to present the works of an artist who has such a strong connection to the local community,” said DAI Director & President Michael R. Roediger. “Though Pereyma had a larger following internationally, she is truly a cherished name in the region, making this an exciting show for all. Whether you are familiar with her work or discovering it for the first time, this exhibition will be one you are glad you attended.”

Aka Pereyma’s unconventional and visionary art demonstrates a highly personal means of expression, conveying strong ties to her Ukrainian heritage. Pereyma would say, “I think it is my duty to introduce the world to my Ukrainian culture.” Pereyma’s art does precisely that, weaving folk-art traditions with Modern artistic styles.

Recurring themes include Ukrainian folk songs, depictions of birds to represent her love of nature and Adam and Eve (along with leaves and eggs) to symbolize men and women. The works tell stories, often through surreal, densely filled ornamentation.

Pereyma graduated from the School of the Dayton Art Institute with a degree in sculpture and attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Not tied to a single medium, she made paintings, drawings, wood and metal sculptures, needlework, woodblock prints, ceramics and exquisitely intricate designs on pysanky, the traditional Ukrainian eggs. The exhibition brings together works from throughout her career, from the early 1960s to the 21st century.

Celebrating a local artistic legend, this exhibition will highlight Pereyma’s love of color and bold design. “More is more” was a favorite saying of the artist. Guests can expect to find a wide selection of the artist’s work, each with an incredible amount of detail and symbolism, giving a look into the artist’s inspirations and passions

“Aka Pereyma was someone who was always creating,” said DAI Head Curator & Curatorial Affairs Director Jerry N. Smith. “She was known to have multiple workstations in her home, so she could simultaneously work on a painting at one station, and ceramics, welding or woodcarving at another. In this exhibition, you really get the chance to see what interested and fascinated her. Hers was a full and rich life, filled with family, love of heritage and art. It is why the exhibition is titled The Artistic Life of Aka Pereyma.”

 

Several related programs and educational resources will be offered in conjunction with The Artistic Life of Aka Pereyma exhibition. These include:

  • Exhibition Speaker Series: Christina Pereyma O’Neal: Saturday, April 13, from 2–3 p.m.
  • Experience the Exhibition: Ukrainian Egg Painting: Saturday, March 23, from 1:30–3 p.m. Cost: $35 for members and $45 for non-members.
  • Experience the Exhibition: Family Story Telling: Saturday, April 27, from 1:30–3 p.m. Cost: $35 for members and $45 for non-members.

Admission to The Artistic Life of Aka Pereyma exhibition is included in the museum’s general admission, which includes access to all Special and Focus Exhibitions currently on view, as well as the museum collection galleries. General admission is $15 adults; $10 seniors (60+), active military and groups (10 or more); $5 students (18+ w/ID) and youth (ages 7–17); and free for children (ages 6 & younger). A&W celebrates the 2024 seafood season with the new Quarter Pound Cod Sandwich.

The Quarter Pound Cod Sandwich features a flaky, beer-battered filet of wild-caught Atlantic cod topped with tartar sauce and pickles on a brioche bun.

A&W is also celebrating Valentine’s Day this year by offering a buy one, get one free Quarter Pound Cod Sandwich on February 14, 2024.

The new fish sandwiches are basically a major upgrade of the brand’s Cod Sliders, which are normally featured for the seafood season.

After several weeks of carryout only, the doors will open Wed at 11am for guests to dine in or order via doordash at this new Doubleday’s location. They explain that this concept “is a  slimmed down offering of Doubleday’s favorites as well as some exciting exclusive items. However, this is not a full service restaurant, but quick service geared to be quick, easy, and take home well. We hope to offer superior food quality and value without having to go through full service experience.”

New Locally Grown Cut Flower CSA Subscriptions Available

Entrepreneur Carly Short, co-owner of Heart Mercantile and Luna Gifts and Botanicals, is partnering with Oak and Ember Farms to provide a Cut-Flower CSA (community supported agriculture). Those who subscribe can expect to receive their chosen number of fresh hand-cut, locally grown bouquets. CSA packages range from once a week to once a month, from July to October.

Oak and Ember’s approach to flower design begins with venturing into their gardens and flower fields to assess what nature has ready for harvest. Each bouquet is a curated blend of flowers picked fresh right before pickup, offering a fragrant and vibrant ensemble. Join their CSA to experience the joy of receiving nature’s bounty in the form of beautiful, locally-sourced bouquets.

To purchase one of the limited spots, visit oakandemberfarms.myshopify.com. Plans run from $125- 400. Pick-up at Oak & Ember Farms, located at 2645 Olt Road, Dayton Ohio 45417. Future plans may offer alternative pick up options.

Oak and Ember Farms is a 36-acre regenerative farm with a 5-acre lake located in Jefferson Township. Under the direction of founder and managing partner Chris Harrison, employees have spent the last 3 years developing the land to become an operational farm and native plant nursery. They’ve been raising plants and growing organic food for general retail, as well as some of the local restaurants in the area, including Sueno, Tender Mercy, Grist, Joui Wine, Tony and Pete’s and CULTURE.

The farm also owns and operates REGENERATE Garden Co, which focuses on helping homeowners grow beautiful, chemical-free landscape designs that also produce food, sequester carbon, capture rainwater and promote biodiversity with a blend of horticulture, ecology, and urban agriculture. REGENERATE has operated in the Dayton community for over 5 years, and was acquired in a transition where (RGC) founder Jonny Thomas became partner and Director of Plant Life at Oak and Ember Farms.

Ongoing plans for the farm’s future include chef’s dinners, u-pick operations, an event venue to host corporate retreats, weddings, general events and glamping/camping spots.

Through its 501c3 Oak and Ember Foundation they also hold partnerships with the Kettering Alternative Program (K.A.P.), a division of Fairmont High School. This program engages reluctant learners and at-risk students through nature and regenerative farming immersion. Students can also earn an Environmental Science Seal and a Local Community Service Seal, which can be applied towards graduation credits. In just a few short years they have worked with hundreds of students and have helped several graduates through this partnership.

The Farm was previously owned by the Shields family, who owned Shields BBQ, which operated multiple locations around the Dayton region and was once home to bluegrass hall of fame legends The Osbourne Brothers.

Set to Tchaikovsky’s romantic score (performed live by the Philharmonic), Septime Webre’s Swan Lake is a perennial favorite, featuring gorgeous sets, beautiful costumes, and dramatic choreography that includes one of the most famous scenes in ballet. Swan Lake tells the doomed love story of Prince Siegfried and Princess Odette, a captivating tale of magic, deception, and heartbreak.

I Wuff You Valentine Hike

Happy Valentine’s Day to our favorite pups! Join us for a self-guided afternoon hike through the trails of Bill Yeck Park. You and your pup will be pampered with special treats along the way! Participants are welcome to come anytime during the program. The final time to start the hike is 2:30 p.m.

All ages. Registration is not required, but you may register to get event weather updates.

New Bacon Sourdough Melts Arrive At Checkers & Rally’s

All three Sourdough Melts can be enjoyed a la carte or as part of a combo served with a side of the brand’s Famous Seasoned Fries and a drink.

Here’s a descripton about each of the melts:

The Bacon Buford Sourdough Melt features two large 100 percent beef hand-seasoned patties, Swiss and melted cheddar cheese, seasoned grilled onions, and two strips of freshly cooked bacon, all served between two slices of toasted Sourdough bread

The Bacon Sourdough Mother Cruncher Melt is made with our all white-meat crispy Mother Cruncher chicken filet that’s coated in super crunchy breading, Swiss and melted cheddar cheese, seasoned grilled onions, and two strips of freshly cooked bacon, then topped with mayo and ketchup all served between two slices of toasted Sourdough bread.

The Sourdough Double Melt consists of two juicy hand-seasoned patties, Swiss and melted cheddar cheese and seasoned grilled onions all served between two slices of toasted Sourdough bread.
