June 9, 2025 By Dayton937

CycleNuts Selfie Tours tie together fun, interesting, scenic, historic, tasty, and refreshing points of interest along a bikeway focused tour route where you ride at your pace and your pleasure. You are the tour boss. You pick the date and time – ticket is good for any day or time – dates/times listed only as a guideline to give you an idea of how long tour normally takes.

With these smart-guided bikeway cycling adventures you bring the bike and smart phone, and CycleNuts provides the Smart Guide. The Smart Guide gives you voice and visual turn-by-turn instructions along an expertly designed and tested tour route.

Do the tour solo or bring along your crew. 1 ticket = fun for all! Easily stop anywhere along the way to visit attractions or refreshments and the Smart Guide will continue the route from wherever you are when you are ready to roll.

The Miami Valley region that Dayton is located in has trails! 350 miles of bike trails – “the nations largest paved trail network“. This tour certainly is not going to try to cover all of it in one day, but will cover several miles of the best of it. Starting in the outlying countryside the tour route will follow alongside the Great Miami River into downtown Dayton’s Riverscape Metropark. Here, you can see one of the world’s largest water fountains, Five Rivers Fountain of Lights. There is also a concession stand and restrooms.

Next stop on the tour is the national monument to the Wright brothers – Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park. The air conditioned museum and historical center, Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center, ties together the Wright brothers ingenious contributions to the world of transportation, from printing to bicycles to airplanes. “Visitors can view the park film, Wright Brothers On Great White Wings, in the auditorium. From there, guests can explore the interpretive exhibits and displays on the first floor which give more insight into the lives and aviation journey of Dayton’s most famous figures, Wilbur and Orville Wright“.

Last stop is the massive National Museum of the US Air Force – “the world’s largest military aviation museum. With free admission and parking, the museum features more than 350 aerospace vehicles and missiles and thousands of artifacts amid more than 19 acres of indoor exhibit space“.

Screenshot

Comprised mostly of river trails, the 37 mile tour route is moderately level except for one dam to cross over, several climbs out of shallow river beds, and across gently rolling terrain. The route is 92% bikeway, and comes with CycleNuts’ 50% downhill guarantee. If your bike has gears, you will probably use them to the full extent crossing over the dam and to a lesser degree in a couple of spots along the route. All bikes are appropriate for this smart-guided tour – even a single speed bike as long as you do not mind walking your bike up the spots mentioned. Bring yours or rent one in the Dayton area (see confirmation information for listings). Sweating is optional. The route is shaded about 75% of the way. You set your own pace, starting time and touring agenda with CycleNuts’ expert smart-guided cycle tour pattern.

Points of interest: Great Miami River Recreational Trail, Great Miami River, Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park (free admission)- dedicated to the birthplace of aviation and the brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright, Riverscape Park – Five Rivers Fountain of Lights, Mad River Trail, Mad River, downtown Dayton, and National Museum of the US Air Force (free admission). There is a food concession area inside of the National Museum of the US Air Force. Additional nearby points of interest: Wright Brothers National Museum, and America’s Packard Museum. June 7, 2025 By Joshua Stucky

The Dayton Gay Men’s Chorus is presenting their Pride Concert titled, “The Power of Love!” The June concert is always important because it is the DGMC’s way to show excitement and appreciation of Pride Month. The DGMC felt it would be important to focus on “The Power of Love” to push back against some of the negativity that has unfortunately become so strong in our country and world.

The concert will daringly focus on all aspects of love, including romantic love, brotherly love, love of country, and love for our community. All of this through the strong, solid performances, people have come to love about the DGMC.

The concert will be a 1st as they perform at the Roger Glass Center for the Arts. The space in the Glass being utilized is actually designed for vocal performance. Surely, this will only enhance an already dynamic chorus.
Tickets can be purchased at the door or at the website: https://www.daytongaymenschorus.org/
Performances are on Saturday, June 14. There are two shows, 2 pm and 8 pm.
Don’t miss the show, which features favorites like “Love Shack,” “Defying Gravity,” and “Wannabe” as well as some lesser known pieces that are sure to get an emotional response from the crowd. See you at the Glass!

Anticoli’s Famous Garlic Dressing Now Available!

June 6, 2025 By Lisa Grigsby

1931 was an important year for the Anticoli family. It was on New Year’s Eve or 1931 that   Antonio and Sarah Anticoli opened their first establishment, “The Rendezvous” in Dayton, Ohio. This would become the foundation of what would be an 87-year run of continuous restaurant operations for 3 generations of family owners.

After 20 years at this original spot on East Fifth Street in St Anne’s Hill (photo-above w/ Antonio behind the counter), the Anticoli family moved to Salem Avenue in North Dayton in 1951 and renamed the restaurant Anticoli’s.  In the 1960s and 1970s, Leo oversaw the restaurant’s kitchen, while his brother, Tony, and sister, Gloria, ran the front of the restaurant.

After their parents died in the late 1970s, Leo, Gloria and Tony continued to run the eatery with help from the third generation of Anticolis.  The Salem Ave restaurant closed in 2000.  Leo then launched Caffe Anticoli, which operated on North Main Street in Clayton from 2000 to 2010. After it closed, Leo and his son Chris moved south to open Anticoli’s Giuliano Tavern in Miamisburg, adding the reference to Leo’s father’s hometown in Italy to the restaurant name. That business closed on June 7, 2015.

Leo’s son Michael opened La Piazza in Troy in 1992, and ran it quite successfully until he closed it in February of 2018.  In discussing why he closed it Michael shared how he’d watched his whole family dedicate their lives to the business, working well into their old age as the restaurants daily.  He decided he didn’t want to do that, and instead decided to create a balanced life for him and his family.  Yet he couldn’t totally walk away from his families legacy.

If you dined at any of these Anticoli establishments, no doubt you remember their House Dressing.  Michael Anticoli, who is the 3rd generation of this famed family of restaurateurs is now making the dressing available through Anticoli Specialty Foods website or this summer at the 2nd Street Market.  He makes this dressing in small batches with no additives at a production facility in Troy.

Created so many years ago by Michael’ s grandparents and carried on today by him.
You can use as so much more than just salad dressing.  Michael suggests using it on
chicken, shrimp, steak, meatballs, pasta, eggs even a simple turkey sandwich is blown away when you spread
The Dressing on your favorite bread or lettuce wrap.
A 16 oz. container is only $10.

It’s Gluten-free, Dairy-free and Sugar-Free.

Ingredients: Garlic, Extra-Virgin Olive Oil, Canola Oil, Vinegar, Herbs, Spices

Three Birds Dayton Opening June 17th

June 6, 2025 By Lisa Grigsby

Big Bird, Larry Bird and Lady Bird Johnson, what do these 3 have in common?

They all appear on the walls of Dayton’s newest restaurant, Three Birds.  It’s touches like these you’ll find all over the building that clue you in that the thought behind this restaurant is playful and fun.

The Idea Collective, a hospitality development company  who have  brought us Sueño and Tender Mercy downtown are currently in a soft opening previews for their new eatery in the former Carmel’s space on Shroyer Road. I was lucky enough to get an invitation to Thursday nights meal, which would be donating a percentage of the proceeds to The Ruib Girls.

Chris Dimmick

The  4000 sq foot restaurant, which was originally opened in the 50’s as the Parkmoor, has seen massive remodeling. After closing on the property in November of 2024, the Idea Collective started working with Moda4 envisioning how they could respect the building, but modernize it to their vision. Chris Dimmick , one of the owners explains “we stripped the building down to the studs, expanded the kitchen and restrooms and strived hard to honor the mid century feel of the building and feature the light brought in through the windows. The majority of our time so far has just been spent trying to make this concept fit into that building and honoring what’s there and protecting it.”  “The original design for that building actually won architectural awards when it was built as the Parkmoor,” said co-owner David Kittredge said.

The Idea Collective tapped local chef Crystal Coppock to open the restaurant last fall. She’s been cooking in the area for about 20 years at Fleming’s, the sous chef at Meadowlark and most recently as the Chef du Cuisine at The Golden Lamb.
We’ve been impressed with her cooking and attention to detail since she advanced to the finals of our Chef Showdown (Dayton’s local version based on the Chopped TV show)  in 2017.

Crystal Coppock

However not long into their discussions about Three Birds, Crystal had to make the call that she’d suffered an injury that would be career altering and would no longer to be able work up to par daily in the kitchen.  It didn’t take the Idea Collective long to make a decision to offer Crystal the General Manager position for the new restaurant.  Crystal shared, she takes on this challenge “with unbridled excitement. As a chef I’ve always felt connected to front of house and now I’m excited to use my lifetime of experience to move to the front of the house. As chef I was disconnected with guests and diners and now I’ll have the opportunity to really influence the guest experience we offer.”

Coppock explained that the restaurant will feature “New American Cuisine” that is family friendly with a selection of crafted cocktails, wine and beer and a menu that will change seasonally, allowing them to take advantage of local foods.  Here’s the opening menu and some pictures of the dishes we enjoyed:

Opening Menu

The pimento cheese has a bit of a quick and is served with a sleeve of Ritz crackers, which takes you right back to childhood enjoyment of this treat.

Corndog Shrimp with a spicy mustard and mango jam were inspired by owners David Kittredge, and Ginger Roddick’s memories of the dish served in Austin Texas at the Moonshine Grill.

The Steak Frites was perfectly cooked and filling for even the largest appetite.

The Cacio e Pepe was rich and creamy.

Be sure and leave room for dessert as the  Basque Cheesecake with poppyseed crumble, and the Chocolate Budino (our tables favorite) were rich and decadent.
For their second night of service I was impressed with how quickly food came out of the kitchen and the smiles and spot on service from the staff.  I look forward to returning and spending many evenings enjoying cocktails on one of the 90 seats on the patio and making my way though the rest of the menu.

An interactive social hour will start the night with two drink tickets, light bites, strange zoo games, and a visit from a unique animal. Then, we will break out into small tour groups led by Zoo Educators to traverse through Africa. On our Zoo safari, we will go behind the scenes of Hippo Cove and uncover the secrets of our world-famous bloat. We’ll finish up our night at our Twiga Tents, gathered around a roaring campfire roasting s’mores. Then, this unique adventure ends with a relaxing night in our safari tents on cozy cots and waking up to breakfast overlooking Giraffe Ridge. And it doesn’t end there! One last special animal guest will join us in the morning to say goodbye.

Ohio’s Recreational Cannabis Purchase Limits Increased

June 4, 2025 By Guest Contributor

Under the new rules, those 21 and older will be allowed to purchase up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis flower per day, a notable increase from the previous limit of 2.5 ounces every nine days. The limit for non-flower products—such as edibles, tinctures, and vape cartridges—will be set at 15,000 milligrams of total THC per day. For context, a 500 mg vape and a 100 mg pack of gummies would count as 600 mg toward this cap.

The new limits apply only to recreational users. Medical marijuana patients will still follow the state’s 90-day supply framework, and dispensaries are required to prioritize product availability for these patients.

The Division clarified that while dispensaries are permitted to sell up to the new maximum amounts, they are not obligated to do so. Retailers must also ensure their inventory systems properly track THC content in accordance with state reporting requirements, and any procedural changes must be logged through the DCC’s eLicense portal.

Ohio legalized recreational cannabis in 2023, with the market officially launching in August 2024. Since then, the state has generated around $750 million in sales across over 10 million transactions.
