Comedy Improv is Back at Black Box Theater

The Black Box Improv Theater is back! Starting tonight (which is sold out) the laughs return to the stage with a new ownership group. Originally founded in 2012 by Justin Howard, he has turned his focus to corporate consulting.  With the Covid-19 pandemic, the theater closed its doors in March of 2020 unsure what the future held. Thankfully, in the summer of 2021, ten veteran performers and instructors pulled together to take over the space and return the theater to a viable entertainment option for the southwest Ohio region.

Kevin Carter, Garrett Geilenfeldt, James Fritchman,  Othalia Larue,  Jason VonVille,  Teri Herbstreit,  PJ Lindsay, Jonathan Sauline and Bryan Lakatos now share the tasks required to operate the theater.  Some teach, some perform, others handle legal responsibilities, accounting and marketing.  They all pitched in for a big clean up and refresh day, handling some repairs, painting and other refreshes to the space.  They’ve even applied for a liquor license- but for now it’s BYOB.

Shows that are inspired by audience suggestions will be Wed – Sun nights, after this weekends grand re-opening. They feature long form improv featuring  locally grown improvisors and we have a variety of shows ranging from hour long shows based on your personal stories to a local favorite, our improvised musicals!  Our musicals feature the former music director of Second City, Trey Stone.

Another major part of Black Box are the Improv classes.  They are a great way to improve public speaking skills, overcome shyness, meet new friends, and more! In Level 1, students learn to be comfortable and have fun on stage using the #bbimprov approach to improv comedy. They will focus on learning to actively listen and responding in a “YES AND” manner. The listening and awareness techniques you will learn can be invaluable in your personal life, or at your work.  In Level 2, students continue to learn how to be comfortable and have fun on stage using the #bbimprov approach to improv comedy. The  focus is on the rules of improv, including beats, escalation and scene edits.​ More information about classes will be posted to there website soon.

Foodtruck Spotlight: Slide Thru

The area’s newest foodtruck, Slide Thru, was launched just last month by Chef Kali Muhammad.  After he was laid off from his job at a catering company, due to the pandemic he  found himself cooking for family and friends as a way to support myself financially, and keep his skills sharpened. “The support that my family and friends provided gave me the inspiration I needed to pursue my dreams and invest in myself. I figured I would do a food truck so that I could pick my business up and take it wherever I needed to go in the instance of another shelter in place order, “shared Kali.
He tells us he “comes from a family of chefs and foodies. I’ve always had a passion for food but my desire to become a chef came from watching my grandfather cook as a child. My grandfather is Italian and his passion for the culinary arts is rooted deep in a culture of some of the worlds best cuisine. From fast food, to very successful catering companies, I’ve dedicated my life to exploring the world of food.”
His food truck, serves a modern twist on classic sandwiches in the form of sliders. His best selling slider is “Da’ Fresh Prince”. This slider is a Philly cheesesteak with fresh cut peppers and onions, topped with provolone cheese and served on a locally baked potato bun.
Oher signature sliders include The Flippin Birdy (chicken, candied turkey bacon, ranch), The Buff’ Chicken (chicken, Frank’s red hot sauce, Monterey Jack) and The Black Betty (southwest black bean patty, fresh pico de gallo, avocado ranch, crispy tortilla strips).
They also offer french fries which you can get loaded or with cajun or lemon pepper seasoning.

We asked him what he wants the Miami Valley to know about him and his food and here’s what he said;

“I want folks to know that true love and passion goes into the food we prepare for you. As a chef, I am dedicated to the process of preparing every ingredient. From brining the chicken we use in our sandwiches, to slow cooking and braising beef that was use in our speciality sliders. My staff has the same passion when prepping ingredients for our food. Their love, time, and focus goes into the process just as mine does. We aim to supply a simple, quickly served, delicious product that has been prepared with true culinary craft. Not only do I love my business and staff, but I love my customers. And I want to continue to bring people together through food as much as I can.”

CHL Virtual Halloween Cupcake Class

Cake, Hope and Love is offering a Virtual Halloween Cupcake Class! They will be decorating 6 different Halloween designs on a half dozen cupcakes. Owner Shannon Teague chose designs that should be easy and fun for most all ages. The designs will be a cat, pumpkin, owl, Frankenstein, Spider and bat cupcakes.

This class will be hosted in a private group page  on Facebook October 18th at 7pm. If you cannot be there for that exact time, that’s okay! The page group will be there for the remainder of the year and the video will stay there as well!

There are two ways to enjoy this virtual Halloween Cupcakes Class. One is to purchase a registration which includes an invite to the page. The invitation will be sent out the week prior to all those that register. With this single registration, you can have all of your friends come over and cupcake together with you! There will be only one invite, but you all can be together and having fun! The registration includes a list of supplies you will need to follow along for all 6 designs. You can register online with this link for just $20.

There will also be kits available. These kits will include everything you need to decorate the cupcakes and also the cupcakes themselves. You can order kits with the link below labeled Kit. WSU Theatre Presents The Riotous Rarce, LEND ME A TENOR

Lush designs and laughter will fill Wright State University’s Festival Playhouse when they return to live performance with the hilarious farce, Ken Ludwig’s LEND ME A TENOR, as their first indoor live production in a year and a half. This giddy comedy, which has been called the best farce of the last fifty years, is a celebration of live theatre, student energy and talent, and Wright State’s audiences, who have waited so long for a chance to see the incredible gifts these professionally bound students offer.

LEND ME A TENOR is written by award-winning playwright, Ken Ludwig (MOON OVER BUFFALO, CRAZY FOR YOU) and had successful Broadway and London runs, as well as a recent Broadway revival. A classic farce with all the mistaken identities, slamming doors and high-stakes hijinks you could ask for, critics hail the play as:

Deer says, “We want to welcome our audiences back with an evening of pure silliness. For me, it’s a chance to revisit one of my favorite plays and to teach students how this kind of comedy works – and they are very quick studies. This promises to be one of the most delightful shows we’ve ever done. I know our audiences will leave the theatre exhausted from laughing.”

September 18th National Cheeseburger Day Deals

We have Lionel Sternberger to thank for his invention of gastronomic genius. Lionel was 16 years old in 1926, flipping burgers inside his dad’s sandwich shop, the “Rite Spot,” in Pasadena, California.  Lionel, out of curiosity, added a piece of American cheese onto a hamburger frying on the griddle.

According to a 2019 report from Technomic, 70% of people would order American cheese on their cheeseburgers, compared to 59% who would order cheddar, 40% who would order Swiss and 39% who would order mozzarella. 10?’s with Casa Núñez Chefs Susie and Iván

Susie and Iván Núñez have developed a comfortable blend of international culinary styles that has evolved into the distinctive Casa Núñez flavor. Iván learned the traditional cooking of his native Puerto Rico from his grandmother and his great-aunt. As a young man, he not only owned a successful Mexican restaurant called “Paso Real” in New Mexico, but also placed third in the prestigious Chilympiad in San Marcos, Texas. He later married Susie in Gibraltar and the pair made their first home together in Madrid, Spain.  Through his Air Force Attaché duty at the U.S. Embassy in Madrid, the couple began collecting authentic recipes from both Spanish and third-country acquaintances. They had regular reasons to invite a wide variety of guests to the Núñez home for meals and the Casa Núñez entertainment style was born.

 

What is your favorite ingredient to cook with?

Casa Núñez favorite ingredient is “Adobo” by Goya.  Adobo adds super flavor in a flash. Just sprinkle any of the different blends over meats, poultry, seafood and vegetables before cooking. You can also use it to punch up the taste of sauces and marinades.  Iván has a bottle in his car to use when we go out to different restaurants.

What ingredient do you dread?

Actually, nothing.  We have included ingredients from around the world and ensure the authentic recipes have the right flavors.

What’s your favorite dish to make?

The Casa Núñez Pavochón.

Roasting a turkey for Thanksgiving in the manner of lechón (suckling pig) has been a tradition in Puerto Rico since the island became an American commonwealth and adopted the holiday. The word Pavochón is a combination of the Spanish word for turkey, pavo, and the word for roasted pig, lechón.  On the Spanish speaking Caribbean islands, the meat of choice for any holiday is roasted suckling pig. It only makes sense to combine the tradition of the islands with an American tradition and serve turkey that is reminiscent of roasted pork for Thanksgiving. This flavor intensive recipe will go over well with the most discriminating of tastes!

Ingredients:

1 head of garlic (cloves separated, peeled, and minced) or garlic powder
1 tablespoon whole black pepper
1 tablespoon oregano
1 tablespoon parsley
1 tablespoon cilantro
1 packet Sazón Goya
3 tablespoons Adobo Goya
1 cup Mojo Goya
1 cup olive oil
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
1 14-pound turkey

Preparation:

Mash the first seven ingredients into a paste using a pilón (mortar and pestle). Stir in the Mojo, olive oil, and apple cider vinegar. Rub the mixture under the turkey’s skin, inside the cavities, and on top of the skin.

Stuff the turkey with Casa Núñez picadillo (recipe below).

Roast the turkey, covered with aluminum foil, and according to the manufacturer’s recommended time and temperature. After 2 hours, remove the foil and baste with the pan juices every 20-30 minutes. A 14 to 16-pound turkey will generally take about 3 to 4-1/2 hours to cook to an internal temperature of 160º.

 

Casa Núñez Ground Beef – Picadillo

1-1/2 pounds ground beef
1 large onion, chopped
1 green bell pepper, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 15-ounce can of chopped tomatoes, drained
2 teaspoons ground cumin
¼ teaspoon ground coriander
Adobo to taste
1 packet Sazón
1 teaspoon capers
2 tablespoons olive oil
½ cup quartered and pitted green olives

Preparation:

In a large stainless-steel frying pan, cook the ground beef until it is no longer pink. Remove all the fat; add the onion, bell pepper, and garlic. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables start to soften, about 3 minutes.

Stir in the tomatoes, cumin, coriander, Adobo, Sazón, capers, olives, and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer, covered, for 30 minutes.

Allow to cool before using as stuffing.

Ingredients to marinate the pork:

1 cup Mojo
½ cup olive oil
1 teaspoon Adobo
1 packet Sazón
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon dried parsley
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon garlic powder
3-4-pound pork loin, trimmed and cleaned

Sandwich:

Dinner rolls (1-2 per person being served), pork, Swiss cheese, sliced ham, mayonnaise, yellow mustard, and hamburger dill pickle chips

Preparation:
Mix ingredients for marinade together and coat the pork loin with it; let it sit for at least an hour, but preferably overnight.  Roast in 425º oven for approximately 2 hours or until a meat thermometer registers 160º at the center. Remove from oven and let rest 10 minutes before slicing thinly.  Slice dinner rolls in half lengthwise for sandwiches and spread each half with mayonnaise and mustard, respectively. Cover one side with pork and a slice of Swiss cheese (you may have to trim it so that there is not too much overlap), and the other with a slice of ham. Add dill pickles to taste and enough pieces of pork to cover the other ingredients.  If you have a panini press, follow the directions to press down the sandwiches. If not, heat some butter or margarine in a frying or grill pan and, when hot, place the sandwiches on it close together. Using another frying pan of smaller diameter, as weight, or a spatula, press the sandwiches down as they cook (they should compress to about half of their original height). When the bottom side is lightly browned, flip the sandwiches over and repeat on the second side.

The world is filled with exciting traditional food; never stop trying new recipes that introduce you to different cultures.

Casa Núñez will invite our friends Jose Andres (Jaleo in DC), Jose Maria (Segovia, Spain), Jesus (El Mesón del Cid, Madrid, Spain), and Vaso (Alexandra, VA).  Outstanding chefs of international cuisine!

Who do you look up to in the industry and why?

We would like to recognize the chefs and assisting staff at the Dorothy Lane Market Culinary Center.  We were invited to conduct cooking classes there about four years ago and we have had the best experiences learning and working with them.

What do you do in the Miami Valley on a day off?

Even though we have a business cooking, we are definitely foodies and like to try out new recipes. Lazy weekends are perfect for antique shopping or movie marathons.  There is always music playing at Casa Núñez, whether it’s recorded or Iván has picked up his guitar to sing. He also paints and draws. Susie is an old-school correspondent who still writes letters to friends for the regular mail and has an average word length of 22 in “Words With Friends”.

Share a kitchen disaster, lucky break or other interesting story:

Casa Núñez had a wonderful time participating in the Ronald McDonald House Charities fundraiser “Doors Of Compassion”; a real challenge and rewarding first time for us in 2019. Each featured chef was provided with a “basket” of ingredients to make a meal at a hosts’ home. We thought that we had to include each of the ingredients. However, we later found out that different chefs created their own menus, regardless of what was provided. This was after we had prepared a Spanish Tapas meal of 11 different dishes based on what we had been given.

Oct 8 – Oktoberfest Celebration
The world’s largest festival, traditionally is held in late September and early October (it runs 16 days!) in Munich, Germany. Our German-style celebration is a bit smaller but just as much fun. Join Iván and Susie for this festive celebration of German food, beer, and wine. Bratwurst Sausages with Pretzels and Sauerkraut, German Potato Salad, Oktoberfest Roast, White Asparagus, and German Chocolate Cupcakes.

Dec 10th- Barrel House Cooking

Bourbons, with their wonderfully rich flavor profiles, make them a culinary gem. Just like cooking with wine, Bourbon offers an incredible depth of flavor. With caramel undertones, smokey, and sometimes wheaty notes, Bourbon adds great flavor to both savory and dessert dishes. We’re all familiar with Bourbon balls, and how Bourbon elevates eggnog to greatness, but Iván and Susie will explore a wider range of culinary uses. They’ll explain the nuances of this special barrel-aged libation, such as the importance of only using one you enjoy sipping, and how different styles of Bourbon affect dishes differently. Cajun Sausage Puffs with Bourbon Mustard; Spinach Salad with Bacon, Blue Cheese, and Bourbon Vinaigrette; Bourbon-Glazed Salmon; Bourbon Sweet Potatoes; and Maple-Bourbon Banana Cake. This menu will be served with wine.

The Bun Bros. ConeyLand in Riverside

Coneyland has operated for over 10 years with 3 operators prior to Mike Davis relaunching it this summer as The Bun Bros Coneyland.  Inspired by his time spent in the Army stationed in Korea and his love of food, he was excited to introduce a line of gourmet hot dogs, featuring a kimchi hot dog, the blue bacon cheddar dog, slaw dog, kraut dog,  and of course coney dogs.

 

Mike and his wife Renee debated about the chili for the coney’s, Mike preferring an East Coast meaty ketchup based chili, while she preferred a Cincinnati based chili flavored with cinnamon and allspice.  So they agreed they’d offer both for the first month and then go with the one that sold the best.  But both sold equally well, so now every Monday they spend hours making 8 gallons of the two chili’s to prep for the week.

The menu continues to grow, featuring burgers that include a bacon cheeseburger, jalapeno burger, a greek burger and Mikes favorite- the Kimchi burger. They’ve added a BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich, a philly cheese steak  and a pork tenderloin sandwich as well.  Sides include chili cheese fries, mac and cheese bites, funnel cake fries, fried okra, deep fried mushrooms, pickles or cauliflower, cream cheese or cheddar cheese poppers, coleslaw and onion petals.

And then there’s the ice cream…
Whether you want a cone, a cup or a sundae they’ve got the options!  The original Bun Bros Hot Fudge Sundae is just $3.75, or you may prefer a banana split, brownie sundae or the short cake sweetie.  Of course you can also do a float or choose one fo the 10 flavors of slushies they offer.  Then there’s the Bun Bros Brain Freeze- vanilla soft serve ice cream blended with a slushie and toped with whip cream.

The location in Riverside was owned by Mike’s buddy Tony Bowen, who also owns the adjacent Valley Billiards, and made him a rental deal that he couldn’t resist.  Having never worked in the food industry  Mike shares that “it’s been an education running the business and he’s learning each day.”  A Beavercreek native, he was also unsure of the location, but has been pleasantly surprised by the welcome and support he’s received in the neighborhood.

Startup Grounds Cafe Opens at The Hub

Clarece and Gerald Richardson, owners of Rich Taste Catering are the guiding force for the new Startup Grounds Coffee Cafe. Clarece, an Air Force veteran, handles the administrative side of the business, while Gerald handles the kitchen side, with a team of cooks. They’ve had their catering office at the Arcade for about 7 months and when management put out an RFP for someone to run the coffee shop, the Richardsons applied.

The idea was sparked last winter after they participated in the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses Program through Sinclair College.  The program encouraged entrepreneurs to create a growth opportunity for their business, so the couple who’s catering business was booming, identified a desire to grow the wholesale part of their food business.  They started selling sandwiches and salads at the Gem City Market, providing 400-500 items per week. So the Arcade Cafe seemed like a natural fit.

This is the first retail store in the newly renovated Arcade.  Rich Taste will be selling coffee, muffins and grab and go salads, sandwiches as well as featuring items from minority and women owned businesses like cookies from The Cookieologist,  vegan chocolate chip cookies from Bless Me Sweets, cupcakes from Twist Cupcakery and  coffee from NameSake Coffee.  Clarece looks forward to the opportunity to find new vendor to showcase and mentor into how to grow their businesses.

Startup Grounds also has a unique partnership with the University of Dayton’s student-run Flyer Enterprises.   “While customers won’t see the back-office support we’ll provide to Startup Grounds, the business can’t function without a solid accounting and marketing strategy. This involvement gives us great experience while helping Flyer Enterprises meet our goals of connecting more with the greater Dayton community and building relationships with underrepresented vendors who might be interested in partnering with some of our on-campus operations in the future,” says Carolyn Haney, Flyer Enterprises CEO.

Although their official Grand Opening isn’t until next week, they’ve opened the gates and encourage folks to come see the space, buy a delicious treat and get a head start on determining your favorite drink.

ThinkTV Auction Kicks Off Tonight

The CET and ThinkTV are again joining forces for a regional fundraising event – The CET/ThinkTV General Action Auction! All bidding will be online and items will be shown on-air September 8, 2021 through September 11, 2021 on CET and ThinkTV16.

Help make this event a huge success by supporting this auction.  Each night there will be special items that close out as well as items that are up for bid all week long. Corner Kitchen to Reopen With New Owner

The One Esca Group, a restaurant management company based in Dallas, Texas, owns and plans to operate Corner Kitchen. The One Esca Group, currently owns and operates the Spaghetti Warehouse located at 36 West Fifth Street in downtown Dayton so they are familiar with Dayton and region. They’re very excited to expand their presence through the acquisition of Corner Kitchen, which will be its own unique and very special addition to the greater Dayton restaurant scene.  According to PR Rep Chuck Vella, on opening timeline,  “It will be some months away.”

They will retain the name and Jack and Natalie Skilliter, founders and former owners, will be consulting with them for a transition period. They will retain some of Jack’s and Natalie’s offerings, however, they will also add new items to the menu, to the bar, and we will also make some changes to the floor plan. They will be changing the dining experience to create their own vision.

They are also keenly aware of the great things that are happening in downtown Dayton and the region. For downtown, a renaissance, if you will, that will make Dayton and an even more attractive entertainment and dining center. They see this move a great opportunity and it is their intention to add to the vibrancy of the region.

Rumbleseat Wine Reopens in Cross Pointe Center

Owners Chris and Urmila Holloway are excited to welcome all to the new location of Rumbleseat Wine in their brand new location at Centerville’s Cross Pointe Center.  After a dozen years at their original shop, they were ready for an upgrade and have designed this spot for enjoying the many wines they carry.  As you enter to the right is the retail area, with hundreds of bottles to select from. The store also carries a wide  range of wine accessories, wine baskets, locally sourced snack products and craft beer. Throughout the year they also offer a variety of classes targeted toward wine and beer lovers of all levels and tastes. Gift cards are also available.
Located to the left are tables for enjoying wine. Each week they feature 10 to 15 different wines to try. Anytime the store is open you can do 3oz. tastes or 6oz. glasses of any of these wines.

Donnell Rawlings At Wiley’s Comedy Club

Comedian Donnell Rawlings, aka Ashy Larry, will perform one show at Wiley’s Comedy Club in the Oregon District on Thursday, September 9th. He’ll be working on perfecting his material for his upcoming Netflix special he’ll be taping at the end of the month.  Donnell is He is best known as a cast member on the Comedy Central sketch comedy TV series Chappelle’s Show and the HBO drama The Wire. He spent most of last summer in the cornfields of Yellow Springs at Camp Chappelle.

Grand ReOpening for Wat Da Pho with 30% Off

After a longer than expected shut down to remodel and enlarge the restaurant that started on June 14th,  Beavercreek’s Wat da Pho will reopen this Sunday, August 29th at 11am.  All dine-in customers will receive 30% all day on grand reopening day.

 

Owner Khoa Huynh talking about the remodel,  “we hope our customers will have a totally different experience with this new and bigger design. Our theme is modernize and Americanize, but the Vietnamese culture still stand out.”

Hunyh  explains,  Pho is our specialty noodle soup, we keep it as our most authentic dish that we have to offer, with only a few tweaks from our own family recipe added to the mix. We also have a wide variety of non-authentic dishes as well, from Stir-fried Lo Mein to Rice Dishes, even an entire page of Vegetarian dishes to choose from.”

The a family-owned Vietnamese restaurant originally opened in January of 2017 and serves soups, sandwiches, noodle dishes, rice dishes, stir-fried lo mein, as well as   variety of appetizers.

Sound Valley Summer Music is Today!

“I think we’re all starving for connection and music is a powerful vehicle to bring people together” Zac Pitts, co-owner of Sound Valley said. “Live music came to a screeching halt when the pandemic started and I think the world realized just how much we took the experience for granted. Music just helps you feel better, especially when it’s live and in the moment”.

A portion of the event’s proceeds will benefit The Greater Dayton Brain Health Foundation. The organization helps provide counsel and financial support to ensure ready access to brain health services, delivery of effective brain health treatment and support services, and collaboration among systems impacting people with a brain illness.

The event also aims to bring the community together for a day long celebration of people who make music in the local area. The music festival will feature 13 local bands including: Jetty Bones, Nightbeast, The Raging Nathans, K. Carter, Freakquency, Business Casuals, Nasty Bingo, The Luv Loss Experiment, Speaking Suns, Bundy & The Spins, Jeremy Street, Gabe Maas & The Bruins and All Hallowed.

“This event is meant to connect those who want to continue taking Dayton’s music scene to the next level.” Pitts said. “There will be two stages (both outdoor) vendors and food trucks throughout the day to keep hungry fans happy!”
