All You Can Eat Chocolate Party

After a year off due to the pandemic, Bellbrook Chocolates is bringing back their All You Can Eat Chocolate Party on Saturday, September 25th.  You’ll be invited into the Candy Kitchen and will have the opportunity to taste all the chocolate they make.

There will be a Chocolate Painting demonstration at 7:30pm. Water, coffee and complimentary wine available. TICKETS are limited and can be purchased at Bellbrook Chocolate Shoppe, Bellbrook Chocolates at the 2nd Street Market, online or at their booth at the 2nd Street Market (which reopens this Saturday).  Be warned this event does sell out!

Ready For Some Fun at the Montgomery County Fair?

Mackenzie Hoog was named Fair Queen in 2020 but due to the cancelation of the fair due to Covid-19 her reign has been extended so she’ll reign over the 2021 Fair that kicks off this Sunday and runs through July 17th.

The 169th edition offers a vast array of over 21 delicious fair food vendors offering up just about everything to tantalize the taste buds. Plus, this year ‘scooters’ are available for rent so you can zip around the fairgrounds. Safely of course.

Opening ceremonies are at noon on Sunday hosted by  Kristi Leigh of the Mix 107.7 Morning Show, followed by the judging of the pie baking contest. 

With rides provided by Big O’ Amusements, games, entertainment, demo-derby, Tug-A-Truck, tractor pulls, dog show, petting zoo, rodeo and of course the 4H programs and FFA (Future Farmers of America) plus, much more.  A new addition to the fun this year- pig races!

Admission $10 per person – includes track events & parking. Kids 6 and under free with paying adult.  You can buy your tickets in advance online, or at the gate.

$20 All Day Ride wristbands available. Rides open Sun 12-4pm, 5-10pm and; Mon – Sat from 1-5pm, 6-10pm.

Chef Matt DeAngulo Teaches Cooking Classes at Gem City Market

Chef Matt DeAngulo, who was once the head Chef at Citilites at the Schuster Center and is now serving meals to those in need via his Miami Valley Meals nonprofit, will be teaching a series of cooking classes at the Gem City Market.

Each class features a short lecture followed by an interactive session. The class will focus on the basic techniques anyone can use to build flavor in their home-cooked meals and make them taste better!

Classes will be taught in the Gem City Market’s Teaching Kitchen, which is just inside the Gem City Market entrance at 324 Salem Ave, Dayton, OH 45406. Parking is available in the lot behind the market. Please note MASKS ARE REQUIRED inside the Teaching Kitchen.
All class sessions are FREE and open to the public, with pre-registration online suggested.

The 90 minute classes are offered on July 9, 16, 23 and 30 at 2pm.

 

Lucky Lemonade Tuesday Night Free Concert Series in Troy

The Lucky Lemonade Concerts are a free series in Hayner’s Courtyard on Tuesdays in July at 7:30 pm. The theme of these concerts is current, regional, original music. Terrilynn Meece, Music Manager at the Hayner says, “This is our ninth year supporting our dynamic local musicians. It has been exciting to share these artists that are actively involved in the current music scene and helping to shape our regional sound.”

Paisha Thomas Quartet

Paisha Thomas is a native of Troy and Piqua. As a young woman, she followed her dream to pursue music as her full-time career. You can find her in the heart of Ohio’s music scene in Columbus, Ohio but her roots here inform much about her soulful, bluesy, folksy songs that ring with the truth of her experience. Paisha calls her style “Miami County soul/funk/gospel.” She is a descendant of the Randolph Freedpeople, a well-documented Miami County story of black migration. Like these stories, the poetry of her songs can be cutting, as well as full of hope and power. She is bringing her songs, especially the songs of her ancestors, the Randolph FreedPeople, back home to Troy. She will be joined by Chris Shaw on fiddle and guitar, Reggie Jackson on drums and Paul Vineyard on bass and harmonica.

Someday MorningLive 

The musicians of the Someday Morning band came together in 2016 after a chance meeting at a party in Mechanicsburg, Ohio. Each had recently returned home after years of touring the country with different bands. Each had come back thinking about settling down in Ohio. It did not take long after the party for them to realize that this chance meeting could be the start of something they were looking for. They call themselves Someday Morning and describe themselves as:
“A four-piece band from small town Ohio with nothing to prove and nothing to lose. Great story telling with simple arrangements and melodies that go down as easy…It’s country, it’s rock, but at its core it’s just a group of blue-collar guys doing what they love.”
Someday Morning is their passion project. Troy Brown plays guitar, Reed Jones is lead guitar, mandolin, banjo and Jordan Powell plays bass and keys with Dann Burd on percussion.

Berachah Valley

​Berachah Valley has been playing bluegrass together in our area for over 16 years. Their sound is associated with tight female vocal harmonies and exceptional musical talent. Berachah Valley is what we have come to associate as the traditional southern Ohio bluegrass style. They have performed around this half of the country at every festival you can imagine and opened for so many talents such as Rhonda Vincent, Pine Mountain Railroad, Paul Williams and the Victory Trio, Joe Mullins and the Radio Ramblers and many more. In 2021 they were recognized on a national level and were asked to be the bluegrass behind the new movie, “Mayberry Man.” It has been an exciting year for the Miami County band. We are fortunate to share it with them. This six-piece band includes the harmonies of Cathy Baker, Michelle Edester, Leisa Hinkle and Larry Collins. You will find Cathy on guitar, Michelle on mandolin, Becky Meyers on banjo, Leisa on percussion and Larry on stand-up bass.

This talented band is a staple of bluegrass in our area and has been playing here for over 16 years. In 2021 they were recognized on a national level and were asked to be the bluegrass behind the new movie, “Mayberry Man.” It has been an exciting year for the Miami County band. We are fortunate to share it with them.

Alyssa Hanson 

Alyssa Hanson is very involved in the Dayton music scene. At one time she was the host of Mick Montgomery’s “Musician’s Co-op.” You will find her performing throughout the area at places like Yellow Cab, Dayton Music Fest, Piqua Arts Council and Moeller Brew Barn. A classically trained vocalist, she studied at Lee University in Tennessee. Eventually she made her way to Nashville and developed her own soulful-folk style with a bit of Broadway around the edges. She was co-writer and lead singer for Red In The Water on the album, “Chasing Change” in 2017. Alyssa will be performing as a duo for our final Lucky Lemonade Concert of the season. Her brother Tyler Hanson will join her on vocals and guitar.

 

Alyssa Hanson is active in the Dayton music scene and has her own soulful style. She is a classically trained musician with a dose of Nashville and a bit of Broadway around the edges.

Grand Opening Celebration For Lord of the Wingz BaldHead Tones Kitchen

Steve Earnesto first started cooking wings at home and then began selling them to friends and was cooking at a local bar. The rave reviews of his wings inspired him to open his own place.  His buddy Chef Baldhead Tone had earned a reputation for making awesome taco’s on Gettysburg.

So in June they joined forces and opened  Lord of the Wingz and BaldHead Tone’s Kitchen in a strip center at 6556 Union Rd.  They are open Tuesday-Saturday 11am-9pm.

Talking with the manager Stephanie, she shared that some of their best sellers include the honey lemon pepper wings, the jerk chicken tacos and the Lord’s Mega Platter that comes with chicken chunks with your choice of sauce, fried potatoes, 2 fried corn and a sweet Hawaiian roll.

They are celebrating their grand opening this Saturday, July 3rd from 2-8pm with a family friendly celebration that includes a bouncy house, vendors that will feature slushies, desserts,
t-shirts and more.

There is also a 60 seat banquet room available to guests at no cost with food purchase. Future plans include adding a liquor license for the restaurant.

Mexican street corn-corn on the Cobb w/ butter, cotija cheese, lime,salt & chile powder.
Fajitas(sorry no pic) steak, chicken or beans w/ grilled onions & bell peppers. Served w/ 3 flour tortillas, chips, sour cream & salsa.

When your Chef is a dad and you’re trying to figure out what to make for your Father’s Day special you ask him what he’d like for his celebration.  Chef Don didn’t hesitate when he said PRIME RIB!
So from 10am-7pm this Sunday, Lily’s in the Oregon District will  be offering the following Father’s Day special menu as a 3-course prix fixe menu:
Appetizers (choose one)
-Buffalo Deviled Eggs
Blue Cheese, celery and spicy tangy buffalo sauce (GF,V)
-Antipasto Salad:Pepperoncini, grape tomato, red onion, kalamata olives, ham, salami, artichoke hearts, feta, fresh parsley, with red wine herbed vinaigrette over chopped romaine (GF). Substitute ham and salami with toasted pepitas and hazelnuts for vegetarian

The special menu is the only menu being served, and while the value is in the 3-course menu, all items are also available a la carte. There are Gluten Free and Vegetarian options for each course. We will also have the bar open to sell DORA drinks for outside consumption as part of Out on 5th.

Dinosaurs Storm the Air Force Museum June 12th

National Museum of the U.S. Air Force visitors will have a unique opportunity to see dinosaurs in the museum’s galleries during “Operation: Dinosaur” on Saturday, June 12 from 4-7 p.m. The museum will close at 8 pm.

The National Museum of the U.S. Air Force often focuses its events and programs on STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. This time the museum will focus on an area of science it doesn’t often get a chance to explore – paleontology. In addition to learning about the nuts and bolts of aircraft, visitors can learn about the fossils and bones of dinosaurs!

During this free event visitors can see a carnotaurus, raptor, baby raptor, stegosaurus, triceratops and tyrannosaurus rex. These realistic dinosaurs, presented by T.A.G. Art Company, can be as big as 9 ft. tall; they can move, blink, open their mouths and ROAR! Building 2 has been designated a “roar-free” zone for visitors that may have sensory-sensitivity.

Other activities for kids and families to enjoy during the evening include a dinosaur question game, tornado demonstration, youth fossil dig and dinosaur-related giveaways (while supplies last).

In addition, a paleontologist and geologist from the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery will join the event and share their knowledge of dinosaurs.

The museum simulators are adding prehistoric-themed rides to their line-up to include a movie ride titled “Dino Safari” and a virtual reality ride titled “Dive in Prehistoric Seas VR.” (There is a cost per ride).

The Museum Store will remain open until 8 pm. The Valkyrie Café will remain open until 7:30 pm and will add dino nuggets to their menu for this event. For more info check the museum’s website.

 

Spark Fairborn Grand Re-Opening

The co-working, shared kitchen space that originally opened in downtown Fairborn is ready to open it’s doors after being closed for months during the Pandemic.  Originally opened as a joint venture by Co-Hatch and the city of Fairborn, the operation is now fully owned and managed by the Fairborn Development Corporation, an organization focused on growth and business development for the city.  Guests are invited to join Spark Fairborn for an open house on Wed, June 9th from 5-7pm or reach out to schedule a tour.

Spark works on a membership basis with a co-working space monthly membership that start at $100/month for a shared desk space, and 2 hours of conference room space/month with additional hours available at $25. A Dedicated Desk space runs $200/month and 4 hours of conference room time. Both memberships include free snacks and coffee and there is a community printing station available. 

Kitchen memberships for the commercial kitchen are still being reworked, but will be available in several levels, based on the amount of time you anticipating needed the facility starting with a minimum of 10 hours/month for about $15/hour.  More info should be available at the open house.

Spark Fairborn is also available to be rented out for private events at $75/hour with occupancy of up to 146 guests.  The conference rooms holds 12-15 guests.

Jaqua’s Now Open at The Greene

Chef inspired menu’s will be the standard for this classic American bistro that opened this week at The Greene.  Jaqua’s has been a work in progress since last summer, chef owner Bill Jaqua told us earlier this spring.  Seating over 170, including a large patio, Jaqua shares his family has been in the hospitality business since 1960, running Heritage Events, one of the area’s largest catering companies.

The menu offers something for everyone, featuring flatbreads, pizza’s burgers, steaks and seafood.

They are even offering an upscale Sunday Brunch from 11am – 2pm. Featured on the brunch will be shrimp, crab claws, scrambled eggs, omelets made to order, bacon, sausage, ham, smoked salmon, caviar, pork loin roulade, carved prime rib, fresh fruits, salads, vegetables, sweet breads, belgian waffles, pancake and a homemade desserts table.  For $27.50 per person brunch includes one mimosa.

Local Bars Support Pride All Month Long

June is PRDIE month a celebration to recognize the sweeping impact that LGBT individuals, advocates and allies have on history in the United States and around the globe, according to the Library of Congress. 

The month of June was chosen for LGBT Pride Month to commemorate the riots held by members of the LGBT community against a police raid that took place at the Stonewall Inn in New York City on June 28, 1969. The Stonewall riots were a “tipping point” for the gay liberation movement in the United States. The uproar also paved the way for the modern fight for LGBT rights.  Dayton Pride is this weekend with a Friday’s Affair at the Square from 6-10pm featuring 3 bands and The Rubi Girls. Saturday starts with a reverse parade down Second Street from 10-11am and food, drink, vendor booths and live entertainment at Courthouse Square from noon-4pm.

Many Dayton area bars are joining together to show their pride, by offering drinks specials that will donate a portion of sales to the Greater Dayton LGBT Center for the entire month of June.

It’s Our Turn To Support This Amazing Woman!

In every city there is a person who quietly puts together community events that benefit local charities, promotes artists and builds up others.  In Dayton, that’s Mary Kathryn Burnside. When I worked for AIDS Resource Center (now Equitas Health) she was always volunteering her time to come up with creative ways to help us do the theme reveal party, coordinating models and costumes.  She’s hosted art shows at her Oregon District store Clash Dayton and put together amazing fashion shows launching local designers and models.

Now it’s our turn to support her.  Mary Kathryn was diagnosed with breast cancer in January. And like so many entrepreneurs, she did not have insurance.  She quickly racked up huge bills for testing and a double mastectomy.

The community that she has spent years nurturing has come together to launch a benefit auction with the an opening tonight at the Circles Art Studio at Front Street from 5-10p.   Here’s just a peek at some of the items up for bid:

We’re excited to bring back our highly anticipated event, Beer and Cheese with Tom’s Market. Join us Tuesday, June 8th at 7:00pm for a funky pairing of curated cheeses and beer at the Yellow Springs Brewery Barrel Room, located at 1475 Xenia Ave, Yellow Springs, OH 45387.

So Pizza Now Open Across From Dayton Mall

Simla Oscan is a college student majoring in business administration and gets some real life experience in running a business with her family’s new eatery, So Pizza. Originally from Turkey, the family lived in Italy for a while where Simla remembers her grandfather running restaurants, which is what sparked her dream to own a restaurant.  The family moved to Ohio about when she was in junior high for her father’s granite business. Which worked out well for furnishing the tables for the eatery.

When we asked about the name, Simla just smiled and said it was her initials. On the day we visited she was working the counter and her mom was doing the the cooking.  Opened just last week in the strip center across from the Dayton Mall on  Rt. 725 is open seven days a week from 10am -10pm during the week, staying open til 11pm on Friday and Saturday.

And while the name tells you it’s a pizza place, the menu is so much more. Offering spaghetti, lasagna, and fettuccini alfredo, salads, burgers, subs, calzones and even fried chicken.  You can enjoy your food in the spacious dining room with table and booth seating surrounded by artwork of cartoons enjoying food, get carryout or have their food delivered.

They offer a lunch special Monday – Friday from noon until 2pm that is a 3 topping small pizza, fries and a 20 oz drink for $9.99.  The also offer a Family Meal Deal all day which is a 1 topping XL Pizza, 16 wings and a 2 liter dink for $30.99.
