Shaquille O’Neal Tips Off Big Chicken’s “Inside The Sandwich Wars”

April 23, 2025 By Dayton937

Big Chicken, the concept created by basketball legend and serial entrepreneur, Shaquille O’Neal, fusing his home-cooked childhood favorites with today’s trending flavors, is officially raising the stakes with the launch of its first-ever “Inside The Sandwich Wars” (“Sandwich Wars.”)

Ultimate fans are invited to try four BIG sandwiches, each created in collaboration with former athletes and current sports personalities: Charles Barkley, Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith and O’Neal.
Ultimate fans are invited to try four BIG sandwiches, each created in collaboration with former athletes and current sports personalities: Charles Barkley, Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith and O’Neal.

The limited-time promotion tips off during Playoff season on April 23 and plays through June 30. Ultimate fans are invited to try four BIG sandwiches, each created in collaboration with former athletes and current sports personalities: Charles Barkley, Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith and O’Neal.

Throughout the Sandwich Wars, guests will be able to cast their votes for the champion. The sandwich legend with the highest number of purchases and guest love across the U.S. will receive a $25,000 donation to the winner’s charity of choice.

“This one’s personal. These are my friends, my colleagues and now, my competition. We’re going head-to-head in the ultimate “‘sandwich playoffs,'” all for our fans and a great cause,” said O’Neal.

Each sandwich in the lineup reflects Big Chicken’s bold approach to BIG flavor and BIG personality, driven by menu innovation – combining crispy, juicy chicken with home-cooked favorites and craveworthy add-ons that highlight each personality’s taste.

The court’s heating up with this all-star roster:

  • Kenny The Jet: Some serious bounce. Crispy chicken brings the power, while fried pickles and jalapeño slaw add the crunch and kick. Pepper jack brings the heat, and Carolina BBQ sauce ties it all together. A Southern-style standout with game-winning flavor.
  • Shaq Attack: BIG flavor, BIG fun, BIG smiles. Starring crispy chicken, melty pepper jack cheese, fiery jalapeño slaw and chipotle BBQ – all stacked on a toasted bun. It is the MVP of Big Chicken, straight from the big man himself.
  • Sir Charles: Brings the heat from tip-off to buzzer. Crispy chicken at center, Mac & Cheese at power forward, bacon and crispy onions on the wings, with chipotle BBQ and Big Chicken sauce calling the plays, on a toasted bun built for an all-star.
  • The Ernie: All crunch, no benchwarmers. Crispy chicken brings the muscle, backed by smoky bacon, cheddar cheese curds and a pile-on of onion tanglers. Chipotle BBQ and mayo run the playbook, stacked high on a toasted bun. A bold bite built for the highlight reels.

“The Sandwich Wars are a reflection of what Big Chicken stands for,” said Josh Halpern, CEO of Big Chicken and Chief Business Officer of Craveworthy Brands. “We’re a brand built on bold flavor, true hospitality and connecting with the community in meaningful ways. This offer brings all of that to life, with our fans playing the most important role in deciding who takes home the title.”

“I created Big Chicken because I always believed comfort food brings people together, and this lineup takes that to another level. Big flavor, big competition and even bigger impact. Now, that’s what I call a triple double. It’s game time,” added O’Neal.

10 Q’s with Miami Valley Meals Chef Marilyn

April 20, 2025 By Lisa Grigsby

Miami Valley Meals makes thousands of meals each week to feed our community. transforming donated and rescued food into nutritious meals for those experiencing food insecurity. For their third anniversary in 2023 they unveiled a lineup of  chef-created spice blends created in partnership with Big Axe Spice Salt Free Seasonings; The Root of Love, Give Back Garlic Blast, and Feel Good Fusion.

Having recently celebrated their fifth anniversary they added a new spice to the lineup – The Spice of Life by Chef Marilyn! It’s a baker’s best friend and is perfect for fruit pies, cobblers, cakes cookies and quick breads.

Free of salt, sugar, and gluten, all four spice blends are friendly for any diet and flexible enough to use in just about anything! From meats and marinades to dips and desserts, the possibilities are endless. Starting in May, you can also buy Chef Marilyn’s spice at Gem City Market and Dot’s Market with more locations coming soon.
For more information and to purchase online, please visit the MVM website.
Each purchase supports our mission to transform donated food into nutritious meals for those in need in Dayton. Spices run $9.99 or  can be bought as a four pack for $37.98.

Chef Marilyn Britt first joined MVM in the kitchen as part of her participation in Goodwill Easterseals’ Senior Community Service Employment Program, and upon completion, was hired on permanently. “I joined MVM  because they are doing something positive for the world we live in by addressing and contributing to food insecurity, something I always wanted to do. The chefs that prepare the healthy meals love and enjoy their jobs.”

We asked Chef Marilyn to take a break from meal prep to answer our Chef 10 questions and here’s what she told us:

1. What is your favorite ingredient to cook with?

My favorite ingredient to cook with is basil – I love it! It can really uplift a dish and I buy some every time I’m in the store.

2. What ingredient do you dread?

I dread too much salt. As a transplant survivor, I limit my sodium and generally follow a healthy diet.

3. What’s your favorite dish to make?

My favorite dish to make is stir fry. It’s very nutritious and colorful. All of my children and grandchildren love it, and I love making it for them!

4. What’s your favorite pig out food?

My favorite pig out food is sweet potatoes – baked or as a pie. My sister Betty makes the best sweet potato pie. She really puts love in it and it puts a smile on my face.

5. What restaurant, other than your own, do you like to dine at in the Miami Valley?

I like dining at J Alexander’s Restaurant. I like a few of the healthier options from the menu, the atmosphere and the service.

Chef Angie (left) and Chef Marilyn (right) with a table of meals.

6. What’s your best advice for home chefs?

After working at Miami Valley Meals with such a variety of donations – I’ve gotten to be creative and experiment with the team. Some of these ingredients, specifically certain spices and herbs – I hadn’t tried before but have now really grown to enjoy them. So, my advice would be to be creative and give it a try! You can always make small batches and you may find something new that you love.

7. If you could invite any 4 guests to a dinner party who would they be and why?

I would invite Calvin Britt Jr., my sons TaeVon and Justin, as well as my best friend Cheryl. They all love a variety of foods and they are open to trying new things. I love cooking for them because they very much appreciate it and they always give their honest opinion. 🙂

8. Who do you look up to in the industry and why?

In the culinary world I look up to Chef Gordon Ramsey because he tells the truth when it comes to food and explains why.

In the nonprofit world I look up to Ms. Amanda because she always greets you with a smile (-: and she always makes her staff know she appreciates our hard work. She is truly concerned with each and everyone’s feelings.

9. What do you do in the Miami Valley on a day off?

On my days off I read and write letters. I also cook zucchini and banana bread to give away. The team at Miami Valley Meals loves them. (-:

10. Share a kitchen disaster, lucky break or other interesting story:

I was hired at the Monday Community Correctional program part-time in culinary but the very next day, they offered me a full time position. I was also training to become a bus driver at the time and weighing my options – but cooking is in my heart. I’m lucky I got the offer and grateful this led me on my culinary journey. Cooking brings me peace.

Changes at the Pizza Bandit

April 15, 2025 By Lisa Grigsby

Chef James Burton has announced  “it’s time for me to step away and retire as the Chef of The Pizza Bandit. This decision has weighed heavily on my heart. It wasn’t made quickly or without countless sleepless nights. It feels so strange to be closing this chapter after all of the hard work and dedication over the years, but I know deep down it’s time for a new beginning, even if it’s bittersweet.

When I look back on the last five years, I’m overwhelmed by what we created together. We became a viral sensation with a cicada pizza — something so crazy it could only happen here. We brewed beer with one of the best local breweries, crafted hundreds of specialty pizzas, and collaborated with some of the most talented, passionate friends a chef could ever dream of. We threw unforgettable special events and themed dinners that pushed the boundaries of creativity and community. Every single moment mattered.
I’ve been hard at work training our very own Timothy Garrison to take over for me as Kitchen Manager, someone I trust fully and have cooked beside for almost 10 years
It’s hard to say goodbye, but it’s even harder to express how thankful I am for every laugh, every challenge, every slice, every night on the line, every full table, every empty pizza box.
Thank you for making these years some of the best of my life.
Thank you for making this dream real.”
Another change includes a new menu for the Pizza Bandit that is in effect as of 5pm today.

Downtown Springfield Launches Restaurant Week

April 4, 2025 By Lisa Grigsby

Downtown Springfield restaurants are joining together to create an unforgettable week of special deals, unique menu items, and incredible flavors from April 6-12! Whether you’re craving tacos, sushi, gourmet dining, or a refreshing açaí bowl—there’s something for everyone! Unlike Dayton’s restaurant week, the sixteen participating downtown eateries will each offer their own special promotions that include discounts, free food and special menus.
Organizer Dan Freeman, who with his wife Lisa own La Torte Dolci Bakery, Salato Deli, Crust & Company and Ironworks Waffle Cafe shared that when they moved to Springfield in 2014, the downtown food offerings were pretty slim and together they wanted to work to make Springfield better.  So they started by launching their Italian bakery and when the neighboring business went out they added the deli. They were recruited to open a business in Myers Market (formerly Co-Hatch) and thus the pizza business was born.
Freeman meet monthly with other business owners who all agreed that business was down, and patrons weren’t eating out like they had in the past and they needed to find ways to attract patrons to the core of the city. With just under 20 independently owned food businesses in a concentrated area we knew we could work together, so they decided to create restaurant week with support from Visit Greater Springfield.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner specials will be offered all week at the participating food businesses, based on their operating hours. Please check with each business for their hours and check below for the specials they will be offering! Their are some 3 course dinner options, Po-Boy sandwich options, Birria Tacos and even free chocolate from one of the restaurants.
