Oregon District Eatery to Rebrand

Roost Modern Italian – to get a new approach for Dayton! Roost is going through more than a name change, but also a concept change to include lunch hours. Dana Downs owner and Executive Chef of Roost Modern Italian announced today that the name will be changing to Culina, and the concept shifts from fine dining to an upscale casual small plate approach. After 13 years, Chef Dana believes that Dayton is ready for a new concept and another option for lunch as well as dinner. 

The ‘fine casual’ service model is defined by a commitment to exceptional quality and a chef-driven approach, focusing on superior ingredients and culinary artistry. Guests can expect a more refined atmosphere that surpasses traditional fast casual dining, while still enjoying a relaxed and approachable environment. “Guests can customize their experience to suit their preferences for their visit. Whether you’re in the mood for a quick salad for lunch or planning to celebrate a special occasion with a group, Culina is here to cater to your needs.” Downs went on to clarify that while Culina will not be taking reservations, accommodations can be made for groups of 8 or more. “Offering a ‘small plate’ service makes it challenging to accommodate small reservations, as this casual style differs significantly from the previous fine dining and structured meal service approach.”

Culina will offer Italian-inspired small plates, akin to what Americans would consider ‘tapas style’. Small plates will on average be priced between $14 and $26, allowing guests to enjoy fresh pastas, seafood and steaks & chops. Culina will also continue on Roost’s focus of gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan offerings. Downs commented “As a chef, my goal is to provide inventive dishes that cater to special dietary needs, particularly gluten-free options.”

When asked about the casual service Downs replied “We are excited to provide our guests with a unique dining experience that celebrates the best of Italian cuisine.”

“Part of the appeal of All The Best is that our dishes are classics that came from the old country and many of grew up with our grandmothers making this for us,” Posner shared. “We offer a warm, fun environment with a staff that goes out of their way to please everyone that comes in the door.

They added breakfast an Express Breakfast Drive-Thru Menu a couple months ago and Posner shared that breakfast is getting stronger and stronger.  And while many folks are ordering and pickup at the window, many are also joining them in the dining room. Check out the breakfast menu here.

Brunch Changes At Dublin Pub

Starting next Saturday (8/10) Brunch is BACK on Saturdays (11am-2pm) & Sundays as always (10am-2pm) at The Dublin Pub. But it will no longer  be a buffet, instead a limited menu filled with breakfast and lunch items will be offered. They have been losing money on the buffet because not enough people were opting for the buffet and they have had to throw away too much food. And $5 Bloody Mary’s and mimosa’s will be available
They do say their brunch buffet will still be offered on holidays that fall on Sundays (Easter, Mothers Day, Fathers Day, etc.)

The End is Near for Ohio’s First Comedy Club

Wiley’s Comedy Club has announced that Sept 7th will be their last show.
Club Manager Erica posted this announcement on their facebook page:
“While opening our doors on 04/20/1982, it is safe to say we have been blessed with the very best customers, comedians from all of the world, and I am very proud to say the BEST STAFF to have ever worked a Comedy Club. Wiley’s has been considered “HOME” to many and it truly is a family in itself. Please join us for our last show to celebrate 42 years of laughter and help us say goodbye to a Dayton Icon. Thank you for your generosity and support over the years, we could not have done it without our amazing customers!!

National Farmers Market Week is the first full week of August and an opportunity to celebrate how farmers and farmers markets contribute to a healthy, thriving community and the local economy. In honor of National Farmers Market Week, the 2nd Street Market will host Sunset at the Market on Thursday, Aug. 8, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

 

The special evening-hours event features tastings, workshops, culinary demonstrations, live music, in addition to both indoor and outdoor vendors:

IHOP’s All-You-Can-Eat Pancakes are Back

IHOP is bringing back its $5 all-you-can-eat pancakes promotion. The restaurant chain known for its fluffy pancakes and other breakfast classics began offering the all-you-can-eat deal this week and said it will be available through Sept. 15 at U.S.-based locations.

 Customers who choose partake in the promotion will get a full stack of five buttermilk pancakes to begin with, followed by additional flapjacks served two at a time, on an as-requested basis.

In a news release IHOP said the restaurant has historically launched the promotion at the beginning of every year, but decided in 2024 to offer it during the start of the back-to-school season “to help families when schedules are tight, and wallets are pinched from shopping.”

New Mural Celebrates Troutman Brothers Legacy

The Dayton View Triangle Neighborhood was home to one of the most influential groups in the funk genre. Located at the corner of Catalpa Dr. and Salem Ave from 1983 until the tragic deaths of Roger and Larry Troutman in 1999, Troutman Sound Labs was the home base for Dayton-based funk group Zapp. The recording studio at Salem Avenue and Catalpa Drive was the site of recordings by Zapp and solo work from Roger Troutman, Shirley Murdock and the Ohio Players’ Leroy “Sugarfoot” Bonner.
In 2012, a statue was erected to honor Roger Troutman. The metalwork was created by Dayton artist Michael Bashaw. Bashaw’s sound sculpture incorporates clock chimes and is named for and tuned to Troutman’s hit “I Can Make You Dance” with Zapp & Roger. In the Triangle Park neighborhood, the statue includes 27 triangles.  “Because I am a musician as well as a sculptor I felt honored when they asked me to create something that paid tribute to Roger Troutman,” Bashaw said. “He was a great musician and producer.”
In 2020 the site was dedicated with an Ohio historical marker in the center of the Salem and Catalpa Gateway. Then Mayor Nan Whaley led the commemoration ceremony that began with a soulful performance of “Amazing Grace” by R&B legend Shirley Murdock, who created music at the studio.

The project to secure the site with a historical marker began as an assignment for two Bowling Green State University graduate students, Kari Boroff and Jacqueline Hudson. Both, now BG alumni, spoke Friday morning during the ceremony.

“What started out as a school project blossomed into something that I could have never imagined,” Boroff said. … “As a Dayton native, I already knew about the rich history of funk music that originated in the city, especially Zapp. However, I have to admit, at the beginning of this project, I did not know much about the Troutman Sound Lab. … After discovering the wonderful contributions that were made through the recording studio, not only to the community but to the history of music, I realized that this site needed to be recognized and celebrated.”

In 2023, the Dayton View Triangle Federation, Inc. received a $10,000 Special Projects Grant from the Montgomery County Arts and Cultural District to repaint and expand the ZAPP Mural to include a new image of Roger at his keyboard with a talk tube in his mouth.

The original ZAPP III album cover mural was painted during the summer of 2016 by the artist John Martin, who has done other murals across Dayton. They were able to get in touch with him and refresh the mural after a large portion of it flaked off the wall. This funding also allowed him to expand the mural and create the image of Roger at his keyboard.

Taste of Belgium Now Open at Austin Landing

After a soft opening today, the official ribbon cutting for Austin Landing’s Taste of Belgium will be Tuesday, July 30th at 11:30am. With 116 seats inside, 30 at the bar and another 60 on the patio, this location is much larger than the one at The Greene.  The eatery hired 50 employees, including a management team with experience from TJ Chumps and The Cheesecake Factory. There are even semi private rooms on the north side of the building for groups. This is the 10th location for this chain restaurant, with the majority and Cincinnati and one in Kentucky.

Jean-François Flechet

The regional restaurant chain  is owned by Jean-François Flechet when he returned from his native Belgium in 2007 with a 120# cast iron waffle maker. His goal was to bring the waffles he cherished as a child to his new home in Cincinnati, Ohio. After refining his recipe, waffle baking began in the back of a produce store at Cincinnati’s historic Findlay Market. The store was crowded with waffle-lovers for weeks and he was asked to find a new home. Taste of Belgium was born. Soon after, the first ToB Bistro opened with traditional (and not-so-traditional) Belgian cuisine serving breakfast, brunch and dinner with Cincinnati’s finest beer lineup.

In 2023, Jean-François was inducted as an honorary knight by the Knighthood of the Belgian Brewers’ Paddle for his efforts in promoting Belgian beer and culture in the United States

Exciting Local Music Showcase at The Brightside on Thursday, August 1st

The Brightside Music & Event Venue is known for it’s Dayton Battle of the Bands series that showcases up-and-coming local musical talent. Last year’s DBB winners, crabswithoutlegs, a 9-piece jazz fusion band, is releasing their very first vinyl record and celebrating this achievement with their friends Six Foot Blonde and Eastwood.

 

Six Foot Blonde is a talented powerhouse coming from Bloomington, Indiana. They’re celebrating their own album release, And Then Some, with a major regional tour across the US. This stop in Dayton at The Brightside is extra special because they get to share the stage with their musical peers.

 

Eastwood, from Columbus, kicks off the evening at 7:30pm. They made their Dayton debut last year to high accolades, leaving local music fans wanting more! They are back and ready to knock our socks off once again.

 

Crabswithoutlegs members hail from both Dayton and Columbus, and have been wowing audiences across the state. Not only did they win Dayton Battle of the Bands, they won The Ohio State University Battle of the Bands too! Six Foot Blonde will have merch and music available as well. Buying original music directly from the bands is a wonderful way to support local music!

Troni Pizza & Pasta Opens Downtown

Beto and his wife Qelja are following in the family business, opening Troni’s Pizza & Pasta in the spot that formerly housed Carmen’s Deli in the Stratacache Tower on North Main Street. Beto is the son of the late Jimmy Troni, who owned Jimmy’s Italian Kitchen in Kettering and Deroma Italian Restaurant in Huber Heights. When his dad died in 2015, he moved to Florida, which is where he grew up.

He returned to Dayton in fall of 2023 where he worked with his Aunt and Uncle at  Demnika’s Italiano on S. Dixie Drive in Kettering.  Most recently we helped his father’s best friend Mo Jusufi open Jimmy’s Italian Cuisine at 824 E. Fifth St this past May.  All while working on getting his downtown eatery open.  Beto shares  it took him four months to clean up and and source the equipment needed to open his place.m He shared his landlord was very helpful during this time. He says he grew up making pizza’s and when he moved back, he sold his Troni’s Pizza in Delray Beach  pizza shop to his younger brother to run.

When asked Beto shared he came back to the Miami Valley because “Dayton needed good pizza.”  He’s excited about being a part of the neighborhood and creating local jobs.

Troni describe his pizza as “New York Style with a hand tossed crust that looks right at you when you hold it up to eat it.”  He cuts the pizza’s into 6 huge pieces that sell for $5- $8 and he’ll offer different slices each day to grab and go,  from the classics like pepperoni and sausage to gourmet pizza’s like chicken, bacon ranch, Southwest Spicy Chicken, Hawaiian and more. Of course you can also order a whole pie made to order.

Beto shared that when it comes to his food he doesn’t cut corners, he uses the best ingredients, something his father taught him, that makes for the best food.

Of course there’s more than pizza on the menu:

Centervill Elks Cheerleaders Liquor Raffle

Centerville Middle School Competition/Gameday Cheer squad is having a liquor raffle to raise funds for their team to attend an overnight cheer competition in January.
They are selling liquor raffle tickets for four different baskets:
#1 Bourbon 🥃
#2 Martini 🍸
#3 Beer 🍺
#4 Wine 🍷
Raffle tickets are 1 for $10 or 3 for $25. You can pick which basket you would like your tickets to go toward. Sales end on Aug 12th and winners will be drawn at cheer practice on August 13th.

The Ugly Duckling 2.0

After closing down their Springfield Street location this past February, this morning at 7am Mason Schindler, Dexter Clay, also known as “Uncle Boof,” who owns Uncle Boof’s World Famous Pancake Mix and Zach Jeckering, opened the doors to their new restaurant on East Fifth Street in St. Anne’s Hill.  With almost no  fanfare, the eatery was packed when I visited this afternoon.

The new place will be open later and serve 6 days a week!   The art on the walls is eclectic and colorful and each table also had a small dice/tee game on it to play while you are waiting on your food.

I had the Eggs N’ Stuff breakfast and added the sausage gravy to my tots and I left there stuffed! It was a lot of food for $10. Can’t wait to go back and try some of Uncle Boof’s World Famous Pancakes! They even have gluten-free waffles.
