Everthings Coming Up Roses at The Century

April 30, 2015 By Lisa Grigsby

century-bar-2The Kentucky Derby means bourbon and in Dayton, when you think bourbon The Century naturally comes to mind.  And it should, since it’s been receiving plenty of national attention for our Gem City!

In 2013 it made the Bourbon Reviews  list of the America’s 55 Best Bourbon Bars and again made the list which by then grew to  America’s 60 Best Bourbon Bars. We think they got it right when they said:

“In what could be the most underrated Bourbon bar in the country, the Century Bar takes you back to 1862 with its 150-year-old back bar. The home of the former Kette & Sons Rye Whiskey Distillery, Century Bar packs 87 Bourbons and regularly holds blind tastings. It’s the sort of place every Bourbon drinker should visit at least once in his or her life.”

Travel and Leisure included The Century in their round up of the  “Best Whisky Bars in America.”  And Men’s Journal just recently  named it as one of The 10 Best Bourbon Bars in America

“A small bar with a huge bourbon list, The Century is as devoted to the whiskey as any other place in America. The knowledgeable staff can help you pick out your new favorite bourbon while you take in the stained glass and tables made from whiskey barrels.”

So on the week leading up to “the fastest 2 minutes in sports” I had the pleasure of joining a handful of Centurions (fellow drinkers who’ve made it through 100 bourbons at the Jefferson Street joint) for a special tasting of bourbons that were newly released in Ohio that very day.

harperI.W. Harper was a Kentucky bourbon brand started by Isaac Wolfe Bernheim  in 1879. It changed hands a few times over the years.  In the mid 1990’s, I.W. Harper was pulled out of the U.S. market and offered only in Asia; primarily Japan.  After being unavailable in the U.S. for 20 years, Diageo has decided to bring back the historical I.W. Harper label stateside this spring. It’s made from a mash of 73% corn, 18% rye, 9% barley and 82 proof.

As The Century’s Joe Head so eloquently pointed out, “it’s a light bourbon, perfect for when someone stops by in the afternoon and you weren’t planning on drinking, but feel obligated.”

Our next tasting was a Henry McKenna Bourbon, a single barrel rye mashbill bourbon.   Joe explained it’s a Heaven Hill produced mcKennabourbon out of  Louisville, KY.   This single barrel bourbon is bottled in bond after aging ten years in a federally bonded warehouse near Bardstown, KY.  He further introduced many of us to the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897. Bottled-in-Bond or Bonded, the liquor must be the product of one distillation season (January to December) and one distiller at one distillery. It must have been aged in a federally bonded warehouse under U.S. government supervision for at least four years and bottled at 100 (U.S.) proof. The bottled product’s label must identify the distillery where it was distilled and, if different, where it was bottled. Only spirits produced in the United States may be designated as bonded.

There may have been some other tastes after that, but things sometimes get fuzzy at The Century.  I do know we finished off the evening with a dessert tastings of a chilled Buffalo Trace Bourbon Creme and it was delightful.  But even more so was hearing Joe talk about future events The Century has planned!

May 2nd –  141st running of the Kentucky Derby. Celebrating the official drink of the Kentucky Derby, The Mint Julep.  This year they are partnering with Bulleit bourbon for Derby! They will also be listening to the call of the race on the radio as they  don’t have picture boxes. Doors will open at 3pm and proper Derby dress is encouraged, but not required. Reservations are not necessary, however you can make reservations if you would like.beer pairing

May 30th – 2nd Annual Bourbon and Warped Wing beer pairing -more info to come

watch their Facebook  for more info…

No dates yet but look for a Bourbon and Girl Scout Cookie Tasting, more collaborations with other local breweries,  more special tastings for Centurions and by fall they should have their Speak Easy opened next door.  Things are sure looking rosey (and that’s not just the Four Roses talking) these days at my favorite Jefferson Street establishment and when Joe was asked if he was happy with the way things were going he was quick to share, “I fucking love my life and am very lucky to do it!”

The 25th Anniversary FutureFest Lineup!

April 30, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

ff_2015_logo-202x300Dayton Playhouse has sponsored FutureFest, a festival of new and unproduced plays for over twenty five years, put on by a community theater run entirely by volunteers. Each year  in one weekend they showcase six new unproduced plays as chosen by the FF committee from the submissions entered that year. Each play is dramatized as either a staged reading or a full dramatization. Each play is a full length play and they do not limit the subject matter. They bring the playwrights to the festival for the weekend so you can mingle with them and we have talk back sessions with them after their show. Dayton Playhouse brings in adjudicators from around the country to pick the best play and give the playwrights a professional critique in front of the FF audience. It’s a play lover’s dream come true, and an opportunity a playwright can’t get anywhere else.  FutureFest dates for 2015 will be July 17-19

Here are the plays that will be featured this year:

Blue Over You – by Dan Noonan

Where’s Mitzi? What happened to Mitzi?! Francis, an enchanting high school drama teacher, comes home to discover that his wife, Mitzi, is missing. Did she leave because of his infantile behavior, has she run off with the hunky maintenance man, or is something much darker at work here? Join this song-and-dance man as he tries to find Mitzi and woo her back.

Book of Hours – Thomas Klocke

Margins, decorative marginalia, marginalized people.  Every connotation of the word is broached when one 14th century Manuscript Illuminator stands his ground for artistic integrity against the heavy handed censorship of the Church which commissioned the handmade BOOK OF HOURS devotional.  To tell the story, the play crosses centuries and oceans, from the Biblical times of Abraham and his sons to contemporary gay street hustlers just trying to survive in the margins of an uncaring city.

Hail the Conquering Hero – Rich Amada

Tom Azuric is a radio humorist who has toiled for years in various stations around the country until he has finally made it to the biggest U.S. radio market of them all – New York City. However, judging from his demeanor, his family can sense that something is terribly wrong. Despite his professional success, Tom, it seems, has failed to fulfill a promise to his deceased mother, leaving him feeling terribly inadequate. That feeling, coupled with the pressure his
boss is putting on him to engage in some sleazy politics, is pushing Tom to the breaking point.

Return to Goodnight – Jared Robert Strange

Irene Deckard has lost her father, but she may also lose her mind fulfilling his final wishes, which involve bringing his remains from Montana all the way down to Goodnight, Texas, and in the company of her gay ex-husband Casper, no less. It’s all part of a promise they made to her father a long time ago, a promise that will bring them together for the first time in thirty years to face old demons, discover new truths, and maybe – just maybe – rekindle their long-dead friendship.

Smoke – Gloria Bond Clunie

In the drama SMOKE, country store owner Ora Rakestraw wants no parts of the mysterious Wallace Johnson when he descends upon her tiny southern town to organize tobacco workers.  It’s the 1960’s— and though Kennedy orders the Surgeon General to investigate smoking— tobacco is king in Carolina.   The Marlboro Man, Lucky Strikes, and Camels are Kool because they put food on the table for her customers.  As promises are made and secrets revealed, love collides with small town politics in one hot, tumultuous summer!

The Consul, the Tramp, and America’s Sweetheart – John Morogiello

On the eve of World War II, Georg Gyssling, the nazi consul to Hollywood, confronts Mary Pickford, the silent film star and co-founder of United Artists, to stop production on Charlie Chaplin’s controversial first talkie, The Great Dictator. Gyssling succeeds until war is declared and the movie is needed to buck up the allies.

Casting requirements for the festival will be posted in advance of the June 1 and June 2 auditions. Check their  Auditions page for details.

Warped Wing Releases Summer Saison Thursday

April 29, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

11136657_829439873802162_999054952603734735_nA motivated group of engineers, the likes of Deeds, Patterson and Kettering to name a few gathered in a small barn out behind a house. These men, Dayton’s most formidable heavyweights of invention contemplated the future of industry. And discussed scientific and technological issues over long hours, cold nights and yes, Saison. The result? Some of the most important inventions known to mankind. These Dayton drivers of forethought were appropriately named the “Barn Gang”.

Warped Wing has  brewed this beer to celebrate the efforts of these hard working gentlemen. This Farmhouse ale is hazy, opaque, golden straw in color. Its Dry hopped with Vic Secret hops, which provides a melon and white grape aroma and flavor with a mild citrus note. There’s an ever so slight bitterness with just enough bite to balance the beer. The malt character is light and crisp and the beer finishes very dry.

Stop by the Warped Wing Brewing Company at 26 Wyandot this Thursday at 5pm to be amongst the first to try this beer, perfect for summer swilling.

A Fascinating, Little-Known Tale Filled with Heart, Heroism and High-Flying Chutzpah.

April 29, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

MV5BMTgxMDcxNDg3Ml5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNDA0NTM1MTE@._V1_SY1200_CR86,0,630,1200_AL_Would you risk everything – your future, your citizenship, even your life – to help a brother in need?

In 1948, just three years after the liberation of Nazi death camps, a group of Jewish American pilots answered a call for help. In secret and at great personal risk, they smuggled planes out of the U.S., trained behind the Iron Curtain in Czechoslovakia and flew for Israel in its War of Independence. As members of Machal – “volunteers from abroad” – this ragtag band of brothers not only turned the tide of the war; they also embarked on personal journeys of discovery and renewed Jewish pride.

ABOVE AND BEYOND is their story.

Showing Thursday night, April 30th 7pm as part of the Jewish Film Festival  at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force with special guest Producer  for a very special discussion about her personal involvement with the documentary.  Tickets and more info on their website.

The first major feature-length documentary about the foreign airmen in the ’48 War, ABOVE AND BEYOND brings together new interviews with the pilots, as well as stunning aerial footage, to present a fascinating, little-known tale filled with heart, heroism and high-flying chutzpah. The film follows the pilots on their circuitous route from the United States – where they met and trained in secret and struggled to stay two steps ahead of the FBI – to Panama, Italy and Czechoslovakia, where they flew versions of the very Nazi planes they had tried to shoot down in World War II.

More than a retelling of the ’48 Arab-Israeli War, ABOVE AND BEYOND examines the motivations of the foreign volunteers – both Jews and non-Jews. It mines the tensions between the Israelis and Machal soldiers. Would the foreign pilots stay in Israel after the war? Were they Americans first or Jews first? The film recounts the personal stories of the young pilots, whose experiences in Israel were life altering. And through their stories, ABOVE AND BEYOND reveals how under-equipped and isolated the Israelis were, how desperately they needed planes and pilots and how critical the actions of these young American men were for the country’s survival.

About the Producer:

An accomplished businesswoman, fundraiser and philanthropist, Nancy Spielberg, Producer, has in recent years turned her energy and talents to producing documentary films. She served as consultant on the Oscar-winning documentary Chernobyl Heart, and is executive producer of Elusive Justice: The Search for Nazi War Criminals, which aired nationally on PBS, and the forthcoming documentary Mimi and Dona.

Spielberg grew up surrounded by the film industry, where she worked on her brother Steven’s early films. She attended Arizona State University and UCLA and, after moving to New York, studied film at Sarah Lawrence College and the New School in New York. She is founder and co-founder of several charities including “A Bid for Charity,” “Children of Chernobyl,” “Project Sunshine” and the American branch of The Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance.

Dayton Time Network- A Barter System For Time & Talent

April 28, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

Neighbors helping neighbors! Get signed up to start earning ‘time dollars’ for helping others in our community, and then spend them having others help you with services you handsneed.

East End Community Services is excited to partner with community volunteers to launch the first ‘time bank’ for the Dayton area, Dayton Time Network (DTN). A time bank member earns credits for each hour spent helping other members, which can then be spent having other members help them. It’s an organized way for neighbors to help neighbors and “pay-it-forward.” Examples of services exchanged range from help learning a skill to assistance with household chores to work on community projects. Members log their hours through free online software.

East End Community Services will be the fiscal sponsor for the volunteer-led organization, and will provide some staffing through its Community Organizer staff position. East End’s board and staff believes the time bank will be a useful tool in its mission of “building a healthy, caring and prosperous community that nurtures children toward success.” Its community center in East Dayton will serve as the hub of the network, though residents throughout the Dayton area are welcome and encouraged to join.

Dayton neighborhood associations and nonprofit organizations are especially encouraged to become affiliates of the time bank, as they can use it to engage new volunteers while rewarding their existing participants. Time banks allow for a reciprocal approach to service provision, in which all people are seen as assets with valuable skills and talents to contribute.

DTN volunteer Lisa Helm hopes that it will help make her work in organizing a downtown community garden easier: “Hopefully this encourages more volunteerism in making Dayton a better place to live and helps our neighbors to be more connected and our area more resilient.”

Time banks exist in over 470 cities, primarily in the US and UK, and range from small groups of a few dozen member to larger networks connecting thousands of individuals. The nearest time bank to Dayton is the Care and Share Time Bank of Columbus, with 340 active members.

To join the Dayton Time Network, an individual or organizational representative must first attend an orientation, which will be held monthly on the first Thursday at 6pm at 624 Xenia Avenue, beginning May 7th. Additional orientation times will likely be announced during the start-up period.

Interested individuals and nonprofits can visit Dayton Time Network’s Facebook page or contact East End’s Community Organizer, Danielle Weickert at 259-1898 or [email protected] for more information.
Join us to learn more about the international time banking movement, our
new time bank in Dayton, and how to use the free online software to record your
hours. Neighborhood associations and nonprofits who work with volunteers are
especially encouraged to attend. For more information, follow Dayton Time Networkon Facebook, or e-mail [email protected], or call Danielle at 259-1898.

Columbus Brewery North High Debuts In Dayton With A Pub Crawl

April 28, 2015 By Lisa Grigsby

NHB Boys

North High Brewing co-owners Tim Ward on the left, Gavin Meyers on the right with Brewmaster Jason McKibben in the middle.

In 2011 to college friends, Gavin Meyers and Tim Ward, partnered to bring a new kind of brewery to Columbus: one that focuses on the EXPERIENCE of brewing.  They opened  North High Brewing as Columbus’ first and only Brew on Premises establishment, where the customer is the brewmaster. ( Dayton’s Eudora Brewing Co offers this).  In addition to customers brewing their own beer, North High Brewing creates small-batch, high-quality craft beer that they serve in their taproom as well as on tap at dozens of area restaurants and bars.

The demand for their beer has been so high that they recently underwent a brewery expansion that has taken them from being one the smallest breweries in Columbus to being one of the largest.   In order to help with the new production brewing facility, North High Brewing recently brought on Jason McKibben as Brewmaster and partner.  Jason has been a professional brewer for 15 years, including as senior Brewmaster at Anheuser-Busch, and most recently as head of production at Anchor Brewing in San Francisco.

1288 Ford

The building that now houses North High Brewing was originally a Ford dealership in 1917, and the founders set out to restore the building to its original historical glory.  Visitors will find numerous salvaged and repurposed architectural elements from throughout Ohio and the nation, including windows and doors from historic OSU buildings, old post offices, and even an 1870’s distillery.

The beers of North High Brewing are finally coming to Dayton and this Thurs, April 30th  you can join the  North High on Fifth Pub Crawl that will welcome their brews to town.  The crawl will kick off at 5:3ppm The Barrel House (where there’s plenty of parking behind the building) and then move on to Dublin Pub at 6:15, , then head to the Trolley Stop at 7pm, walk next door to  Lucky’s at 7:45pm and and end up at Blind Bobs by 8:3ppm . The crawl locations are less than 1 mile from start to finish.

‘Taking Shakespeare’ Review – Human Race Theatre Company – You Have To Be Carefully Taught

April 24, 2015 By Russell Florence, Jr.

TAKING-SHAKE-production-4The incredibly testy, life-changing relationship between a disheartened Shakespeare professor and her unmotivated student drives the humor and poignancy of John Murrell’s intimate, relatable two-hander “Taking Shakespeare,” a highlight of Canada’s 2013 Stratford Festival currently receiving a terrific Midwest premiere at the Loft Theatre courtesy of the Human Race Theatre Company.

Set in a non-descript town on the ground floor of an old house, attractively realized with disheveled, lived-in finesse by designer Dan Gray, “Taking Shakespeare,” delicately directed with atmospheric acuteness by Shakespeare devotee Aaron Vega, is primarily fueled by a very impressive cast, certainly one of the best assembled on the Loft stage this season. Johanna Leister as the seasoned, critical and concerned Prof and Jon Kovach as 24-year-old slacker Murph are a marvelously well-matched duo, meticulously, and at times, breathtakingly uncovering the beauty, mystery, rage, and significance of “Othello,” one of the Bard’s deepest, most complex plays, without forgetting the importance of connection and the subtlety of executing scenes with realistic impulses.

TAKING-SHAKE-production-2

Over the course of five strenuous, enlightening weeks (lighting designer John Rensel and sound designer Jay Brunner expertly mark the moody passage of time), Prof educates Murph on the Bard’s fascinating intricacies while also revealing truths behind the politics and professionalism of academia. The stern yet droll Leister, sustaining a wonderfully agitated discontentedness, dynamically engrosses. In fact, she is specifically mesmerizing in the dramatic moments which stir emotions. In addition to bringing power and vulnerability to Prof’s reflections on her upbringing and a serious crush that left an indelible imprint which hasn’t subsided, she masterfully interprets Shakespeare’s challenging, illuminating language. Trust me, when Leister steps into Othello’s shoes late in Act 1, a pulsating moment of epiphany for Prof and Murph, the descriptive passage “Villain, be sure thou prove my love a whore. Be sure of it. Give me the ocular proof…” will linger in the recesses of your mind. By and large, don’t be shocked if the drive and fervor within her tremendous portrayal conjures memories of one of your memorable, unabashedly passionate teachers and the invaluable lessons learned.

Likewise, Kovach, returning to the Race following a 2012 appearance in “Band Geeks!,” is equally captivating. His perfectly awkward, nonchalant aura strikingly dissipates as Murph, attempting to regain some inkling of goal-driven maturity having particularly disappointed his mother, one of Prof’s former students, advances to a better understanding of the Bard’s intentions. Due to the magnetic credibility of Kovach’s excitable evolution, it’s easy to root for Murph’s success and his future potential, particularly as he grows more confident in his textual debates with Prof and gets to the heart of what “Othello” truly means not only on the page but within his soul.

“Taking Shakespeare,” a reminder that the Bard’s legacy extends far beyond his use of iambic pentameter, would have flowed better as a one-act and has an ambiguously forced conclusion, but it’s easily one of the most absorbing, pleasantly surprising new plays you’re likely to see this spring.

“Taking Shakespeare” continues through May 3 in the Loft Theatre of the Metropolitan Arts Center, 126 N. Main St., Dayton. Performances are Wednesday-Saturday at 8 p.m., Tuesday at 7 p.m.; Sunday at 2 p.m. Act 1: 65 minutes; Act 2: 35 minutes. Tickets are $35-$45, but discounts are available. For tickets or more information, call Ticket Center Stage at (937) 228-3630 or visit www.ticketcenterstage.com or www.humanracetheatre.org.

Feedback Needed On Design Finalists Announced for River Run Mural

April 24, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

riverrun_rendering The Downtown Dayton Partnership (DDP), Miami Conservancy District (MCD), and Five Rivers MetroParks led the search for artists/designers to submit design ideas to be painted on the 953-foot-long, concrete floodwall on the north side of the Great Miami River as part of the RiverScape River Run project. The Dayton Visual Arts Center (DVAC) led the artist outreach process to successfully engage the local arts/design community. More than 80 submissions from throughout the country were submitted and reviewed by a design selection committee. The four finalists include designs by the following artists: Geoffrey Smith, Kettering, Ohio; Michael Anderson, Belleville, Illinois; Amy Deal, Oakwood, Ohio; and Christian Larson, Dayton, Ohio.

Images of the four finalists are below, or go  online at www.downtowndayton.org for details.   Community feedback is being collected through an online forum on Dayton.com through 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, April 29. Michael Anderson – Belleville, Illinois
This design, titled “The Spirit of Freedom,” is composed of a series of winged shapes over waves of color that mimic the flow of the Miami River. The shapes are an interpretation of the phrase “free as a bird” as well as the spirit of flight, appropriate because of Dayton’s association with aviation in America and as the home town of the Wright brothers. The shapes may also be seen as doves of peace, a reminder of the 1995 agreement negotiated at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and for which Dayton is known throughout the world.

Mural Finalist - Amy Deal
Amy Deal – Oakwood, Ohio
My vision was to approach the project by including what is happening on and near the river, as well as showcasing that our river is healthy with an abundance of beautiful nature and wildlife. The bike/running/walking trails in Dayton are spectacular. The impending River Run Project is very exciting and will only enhance river activity. Also included is historical significance by symbolizing the Wright Brother’s Wright Flyer with graphic use of lines, which also represent bridges. The circles represent Dayton’s history with bicycles. Dayton is active with cycling, walking, running, rollerblading, canoeing, and kayaking to name a few. Dayton has opportunities for everyone.

Mural Finalist - Christian Larson
Christian Larson – Dayton, Ohio
My design is a stylized depiction of a Great Blue Heron taking flight amid a flock of egrets and other river birds. The Great Blue Heron has always been one of my favorite birds to see along the river and their numbers are growing. I see the heron as a symbol of the region and the rivers in general, as well as being beautiful to look at. I chose a palate of two grays and a silver metallic for the herons. Dayton’s RiverScape and the downtown area have a large number of multicolored lights, many of which will illuminate the mural. I hope they capture the light in the reflective silver surfaces, giving the illusion that the birds are glowing.

Mural Finalist - Geoff Smith
Geoff Smith – Kettering, Ohio
The inspiration for this design came from my bicycle and kayak excursions throughout the Dayton and surrounding areas. I’m always intrigued by the different greens that roll over the fields like ribbons, interacting with the rivers, sky and clouds. To illustrate this, I used two greens and two blues in the shape of ribbons to symbolize the harmony of these natural surroundings.

It’s A Farmers Market At Night, With Beer!

April 24, 2015 By Dayton937 4 Comments

Local Vendors will light up the “Night Market” Saturday Night

This Saturday the place to be is the Yellow Cab building. Tucked back on fourth street between Garden Station and the Dublin Pub is a community art space that hosts all kinds of events, most notably the Food Truck Rallies, art shows, concerts, movie showings and even farmers markets.

This weekend the Night Market is happening.  Night Market is a night time farmers market with craft beer, food trucks and entertainment. This is a fun way to fill your table full of local goods, drink some craft locally brewed beer, grub on some of the best food trucks around and listen to some tunes from DJ Etch. All ages are welcome for this party atmosphere market.

With spring time here our farmers will be selling their veggies. Brickel Creek will be bringing her organic goodness. Flying  Mouse will have maple syrup. Homefull will be bringing items from their 150 raised beds.

Look for popcorn, both sweet and spicy from Caramel Cravings, and gluten free baked items from Neighborhood Nest including spicy cheese crackers! Also featured are vanilla extracts, jams and jellies, spice blends, granola, cookies, and cinnamon rolls from Baker’s Vegetable Market & Greenhouse.  Baker’s will also have hand pies, sprouts, lettuce and baby vegetable plants, so you can get your own garden started.

HouseMade will have their sriracha, hot honey, salts and rub.  Simpleman Beef Jerky will be coming down again from Columbus with their all natural and amazing beef jerky.  My Artisano Foods from Cincinnati will be making their first appearance with their gourmet cheeses.

Spices, Veggies, Non Food Items, Beers, and much, much more

There will even be non-food items to look out for. Travis Eads from Oakwood will be selling his handmade items for the kitchen and the home.  Ludic Soap will be returning with her amazing smelling handcrafted soaps.  Also, Gem City Tee Shirts will have all kinds of Dayton designs on hand.

You will have four food trucks to look forward to for the night. New on the scene is the Drunken Smoker Food Truck featuring Waffles.  The Shakery, Fronana and Sweet P’s will also be there.

This event is rain or shine. If this rain passes by for the weekend this event will be held outside. If not there is plenty of space inside for everyone. The hours are from 5-9 pm Saturday the 25th of April.

Featured breweries for this weekend are Toxic, Yellow Springs and Warped Wing.

This is a perfect, intimate market for those of you who enjoy eating local and buying local.  What better way to spend a Saturday evening then at the Night Market?  It is a perfect time to create your own local, organic Food Adventure, and celebrate what Ohio has to offer.

Come down to eat, drink, shop and meet some new Dayton peeps!

Volunteers Needed at Seedling Saturdays To Help Save Local Forests

April 23, 2015 By Dayton937

treesAs part of Five Rivers MetroParks’ reforestation efforts, more than 60,000 seedlings have been planted during the past four years on land Five Rivers MetroParks manages. Now, volunteers are needed during upcoming Seedling Saturdays to ensure these seedlings can grow — and improve our local environment. These free events will be held from 9 a.m. to noon:

  • Saturday, Apr. 25 —  Carriage Hill MetroPark, 7800 E. Shull Rd. in Dayton
  • Saturday, May 2 —  Germantown MetroPark, 7101 Conservancy Rd. in Germantown
  • Saturday, May 9 —  Carriage Hill MetroPark, 7800 E. Shull Rd. in Dayton
  • Saturday, May 16 — Sugarcreek MetroPark, 4178 Conference Rd. in Bellbrook
  • Saturday, May 30 —  Germantown MetroPark, 7101 Conservancy Rd. in Germantown

Participants will join Five Rivers MetroParks staff to check on seedlings and provide some TLC, such as mulching, straightening protective tubes and clearing competing vegetation. These family-friendly events are a great way for kids to explore the outdoors and learn about nature — all while protecting the region’s natural heritage by rebuilding forests stressed by the Emerald Ash Borer, invasive species, climate change and more.

“With more than 15,800 acres of land to protect, Five Rivers MetroParks staff rely on volunteers’ help to protect our environment,” said David Nolin, Five Rivers MetroParks director of conservation. “Human beings have manipulated the world around us so much, it needs some help. We’ve found in MetroParks, we can greatly increase forest diversity with a little bit of effort.

“We’re stewards of the land, not absentee landlords,” Nolin added. “It is up to us to protect our natural areas not only for future generations, but for the future of the wildlife within our region as well.”

Registration is requested, but not required. Register for Seedling Saturdays online or by calling 937-275-PARK (7275). For additional volunteer opportunities to help Five Rivers MetroParks protect native trees and forest ecosystems, contact volunteer coordinator Yvonne Dunphe at [email protected] or at 937-275-PARK (7275).

The new facility will allow the brewery to increase production capacity, warranted by the demand for its beer in Dayton as well as to expand distribution throughout Mid and Southwest Ohio.  The 8,000 sq. foot space, located in the former Weiler Welding building at 41 Madison Street, features state-of-the-art equipment including a canning line and a 15 barrel steam brew house, which together offer an initial brewing capacity of 3,000 bbls annually, with opportunity to scale up to 6,500 bbls. Hilgeman says,“Not only are we able to increase our capacity but soon we will also be able to offer bottles and cans. These are projects that we have wanted to do, but just didn’t have the room in our original space.” In addition, the new brewery features 5,000 sq. feet of space for patrons, including areas available for private events.  The 36 taps will feature Ohio craft beers.

Founded in 2010, the award- winning Dayton Beer Company believes in continuing the city’s rich history as a place where innovation is born with its unique but accessible brews. Small
batch, handcrafted beer embodies its vision of how beer should taste. The Dayton Beer Company will continue to operate its Kettering Tap Room at 912 E. Dorothy Lane 45419 (though it will be closed this week- as all hands are on deck to get the new place open).  And Hildeman says they will keep their tradition of $10 growler and $5 howler fills on Wed nights.
