A Call To Arms; An Interview With Tim Anderl Of Arms Race

April 2, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

For almost twenty years now, Tim Anderl has written some of the most compelling stories and informative interviews for several outlets.  He  has been in contact with artists/bands that span all over the world.  From cutting his teeth in the business as an intern at Alternative Press  magazine to now being frequently featured in publications like Ghettoblaster Magazine and New Noise Magazine-Anderl has spent a large  portion of his life involved in the world of music.  So it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone then when you are made aware that Anderl is  also in a band-right here in the heart of Dayton, Ohio.  The band is called Arms Race. This past fall, the foursome released their debut EP  (and one of the best releases in 2014) Brought a Hug to a Gunfight.

The other members of Arms Race; bassist Cole Bohanon, drummer Justin Satinover, guitarist Kris Neises began the work on music together  back in 2013 with another guitarist at the time, Seth Ratliff.  The lineup consists of members from other local bands such as The Black Hearts  of Men, Kris N, Giant Defiant and The 1984 Draft.  Satinover’s basement became the setting to where most of the music started to be written.    As soon as some demos were recorded, Satinover presented them to his 1984 Draft band mate Joe Anderl, who is also Tim’s brother.    Satinover’s intention was to optimistically recruit him to come onboard and sing lead vocals.  Unfortunately due to timing not being ideal to  join at that time, Joe respectfully declined the offer.  He did listen to the demos though and immediately knew who should be contacted-Tim.

“I get this email from Kris saying that him and some buddies of his were playing in this band and were wondering if it would be something I  would be interested in,” Anderl explained during a recent sit down.

It wasn’t going to be the first time Tim was possibly going to be involved in a band.  In college, Anderl performed in another 90s-era emo  band titled Low Pan.  The 5-piece set went on a 10 day tour at one point and also played all over Ohio.  When Anderl graduated from Ohio University, Low Pan parted ways.  After spending some time in Cleveland working and returning back to Dayton, Anderl performed in a few other bands that lasted briefly.

When Anderl started listening to the instrumental demos, the sound coming out echoed the classic definitive sound that the 90s emo scene provided.  The songs reminded him of the days when while he was growing up in Beavercreek as he would attend D.I.Y. basement/hall shows around the surrounding area.  Memories of listening to bands like Texas Is The Reason and Braid began to resurface when the demos rolled on.  It has been ten years since he last performed in a band.  However-Anderl was hooked and agreed to join.  Shortly after Anderl integrating himself within Arms Race and they began playing a little, Ratliff exited from being in the band due to becoming busier in another band was in and also getting married.  With Ratliff’s departure, Arms Race made the decision to keep things were they were.

In July 2014, Arms Race went to work on recording Brought a Hug to a Gunfight at Popside Recordings Studio in Troy with ex-Hawthorne Heights’ guitarist Micah Carli.  While recording, Carli stepped in a little to play some guitar to add some layers.  The end result is an EP that influences include mid-90s alt-rock, grunge and emo.  With Neises recording Thankful Parade with his other band Kris N in 2013, along with Joe Anderl and Satinover’s The 1984 Draft recording the EP Bo Jackson Up The Middle in 2014, the choice to work with Carli was a simple decision.

“He’s so easy to work with and was just a nice person,” Anderl said.  “He also has such amazing equipment.”

Among Columbus and Dayton already under their belts, Arms Race plan to play more shows hopefully in 2015.  An LP being recorded with Carli has also been discussed, but for now Arms Race plans on staying focused on writing new songs and having their performances stay as strong as possible.  If Arms Race were to never have gone to the studio, play live, or simply do anything but just jam with really no intention of doing anything-Anderl would have been okay with that also.

“It felt like the kind of band that could be really fun to practice with and never play a show live,” Anderl says.  “Once we graduated to actually doing things in public-that was icing on the cake.”

Arms Race will perform during the APUNKolypse Now! event on Saturday, April 4 at Canal Public House, 308 E. First St. The Loveless, Kill City, Red Hot Rebellion, Bribing Senators, Movehome and Daymare are also on the bill. Show begins at 7 p.m.

Brixx Adds New Menu Items in Time for Dragon’s Season

April 2, 2015 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

New “Brixx IPA” brewed exclusively by the Dayton Beer Company fro Brixx Ice Co.

A Soft Pretzel as big as a steering wheel?  That’s just one of the new “Must Eats” that Brixx Ice Co. has added to their new menu this week,  Dont worry, Brixx kept all of your old favorites like the Build your own burger, meatloaf and more.  They have just branched out and are experimenting with some new choices, to see if they become favorites.

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— Owner Chris Bhai and his staff have been in training and are ready with their newest menu.

— Some of these items are so new, they weren’t available for ordering at press time… these specialties were…

The Spicy Chicken Sandwich – Free range chicken breast with spicy sauce, on a kaiser roll

The Hawaiian Chicken – Chicken breast served with a grilled pineapple

Braised Beef Burger – 1/2 pound burger with beef shoulder and gravy on top

Pork Pleaser Burger – 1/2 pounder topped with pulled bbq pork and bacon

Italian Beef Sandwich – with peppers and all

Deep Fried Turkey and Bacon Sandwich – The bacon may be deep fried too

Deep Fried Turkey Hot Shot Sandwich – open faced with the works !

Turkey and Waffles – Brixx’s take on a Southern classic

Food Adventures was however, able to get their mouths on some of the new specialties Brixx is trying out.

We found some delicious choices that are simply, MUST EATS !

Hand Breaded Mac n Cheese Bites, as Big as Baseballs

MUST EATS:

— BRIXX IPA: The first must eat, is a must drink.  It is the house IPA, brewed for Brixx exclusively by The Dayton Beer Company.  The beer appears milky and cloudy, but tastes true to the form of a mild IPA.  In other words it is slightly “hoppy” if you like that groove.

— THE GIANT SOFT PRETZEL:  This thing is as big as a steering wheel.  It is served with a cold beer cheese made with Dragon’s Milk Beer, which really makes the whole appetizer.  It is one of those food items that you can’t stop eating.  We could drink the beer cheese dip as a soda.

— MASHED POTATOES and GRAVY SIDE ITEM:  New item, but the homemade stuff we have come to expect from Brixx.  You won’t see people leaving this side dish on their plate.

— SRIRACHA GINGER BBQ DRAGONS TOES: Whether you get boneless or traditional, this sauce is incredible.  You feel the heat up front, then the sweet ginger taste smolders by.  Nothing says wings like a mouthful of this flavor.  Wow this stuff is good, and packs a small explosion of heat!

Sriracha Ginger BBQ Dragons Toes, Hot and Delicious !

— MAC N CHEESE BITES: These aren’t bites, these are snowball-sized spheres of hand breaded mac n cheese.  Leave it to Chris Bhai and Brixx to push the envelope with this sinful menu item.  These appetizers are rich, creamy and crunchy all at the same time.  This appetizer is our bet to become a fan favorite.

There you have it Food Adventure fans.   Now it is your turn to step up to the plate.  Whether it’s the new IPA or the new appetizers, Brixx gives you even more reasons to take a swing at their menu with your taste buds.  Spring has sprung, and the Brixx’s new menu has begun.

Please check out our gallery below with original photos of the new menu items. No stock or contributed photos here !

Registration Now Live For Mud Volleyball Fundraiser

April 1, 2015 By Lisa Grigsby

616579_687206081328739_4804962150952237619_oDayton’s dirtiest party is all set for  it’s 25th edition on Saturday, July 11th and looking for folks that enjoy playing in the mud! The event continues to grow each year and last year over 260 teams spent the day drinking beer,  diving in the dirt and rocking out to live bands in between bouts at the tournament.  The Dayton MUD Volleyball event site is located behind Wegerzyn Garden MetroPark at 1301 East Sibenthaler Avenue in Dayton.  Teams have the choice to register in the Competitive or the more laid back Non-competitive tournament.

Non-Competitive:  this is the safest bet for first-timers or teams that love drinking beer all day. The Non-Competitive tournament begins with simple round robin gameplay between the seven (7) teams on the court. Once all seven teams have played each other (right around 1PM), you’ll have the option to enter the Potty Bowl. The Potty Bowl is a single elimination bracket for Non-Competitive teams. In other words you choose when your day ends: 1PM or 4PM (depending on how you do). Expect to play at least seven (7) matches in the Non-Competitive Tournament.*

Competitive:  this is for experienced MUD Volleyball players and those who are a bit more serious about gameplay. Competitive teams don’t typically drink (as much) and are looking for a longer day. Similar to Non-Competitive, this tournament starts out with round-robin play between the eight (8) teams on the court. Unlike the other tournament, this will lead into an automatic, single elimination bracket in the afternoon. How well you perform will determine the length of your day. Expect to play at least nine (9) matches in the Competitive Tournament.*

All players must be at least 16, and all teams must have a minimum of 6 members and a maximum of 10 players.  Each team must have at least two (2) female players, but is not E_MEOrkw_400x400required to have any male players.  Earlybird team registration is $350 in April and May, goes up to $375 in June and will be $400 in July if the event is not already sold out.  Spectator are welcome and the entry fee is just $5.

If you’re not sure if you want to play, volunteers are always needed. Volunteers can work shifts for set up staring on Thursday or Friday, at the event on Saturday or clean up on Sunday. Once your shift is over we’ll invite you to grab some grub and an ice cold Bud Light. There’s a sweet t-shirt and some other good stuff waiting for you, too!

All proceeds from MUD Volleyball stay in the local community and benefit the programs and services of The Epilepsy Foundation of Western Ohio. The Foundation serves an 11- county area of Auglaize, Champaign, Clark, Darke, Greene, Logan, Mercer, Miami, Montgomery, Preble and Shelby Counties.

One in 26 people will be diagnosed with epilepsy in their lifetime. The Epilepsy Foundation’s vision is to create an environment where there is no stigma or fear associated with seizure disorders. They strive to help those affected by epilepsy have the knowledge, self-esteem and support to participate in normal life experiences and remove the barriers impeding their everyday lives.
