New Location, Long Lasting Memories Remain With BarnJam 31

April 13, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

While you drive to or around 3948 Soliders Home-Miamisburg Road in Miamisburg, Ohio, the large steel barn  stands firmly on the property.  The generously proportioned structure is showing the beginning stages of typical  wear and tear on the rooftop.  Meanwhile, the inside of  the barn is still intact.  You take notice of the wood beams  that are steadily holding up the shed and high rise ceiling.  The picturesque farm land that accompanies the barn  is tranquil and pleasing.  Not much traffic flows through, which gives it the serene tone.

The barn has been the centerpiece to many events since the day of its construction.  Stories from the past and  present are quietly cemented within its walls.  Tales of life will be forever etched in memory.  While he lived on  the five acres of land that also included the barn, Eric Suttman would let others create their own unforgettable moments  in the barn as well.  In 1999, Suttman began the bi-annual musical experience BarnJam.  Come rain or shine, patrons were allowed to camp, build fires, and enjoy the music together in their own way on the property.  Starting out as a few bands jamming together, the festival has become one of the most anticipated events in the area that hundreds of people look forward to each spring.

Born in 1959, Suttman went to St. Albert the Great School and was a graduate of Alter High School.  Being well known as a lifelong musician and being respected for his work in recording, Suttman was fortunate enough to be the winner of multiple local Emmy Awards for music and production.  What Suttman will be forever known for, however, is his dedication and passion for teaching at the university he received his degree from-the University of Dayton.  For over thirty-three years, he brought a genuine love to the classroom each day that reached his students in ways that he would never realize.  Although Suttman passed away last April from cancer, the lives he touched will not be forgotten.

BarnJam was more than just a festival to Suttman.  He saw it as an opportunity to promote the music scene by showcasing local and regional musical talent.  He also aimed to raise money for local arts-based charitable organizations.  On top of all that was his desire to help build communities.  Have individuals reach out to one another as a way of connecting, while building friendships on his land.

This year, the group that will run the event wanted it to be accessible to the public more than what it has been.  The decision was made for BarnJam to be located on the Great Miami River just outside Dayton in Tipp City.

On April 18th, 3948 Soliders Home-Miamisburg Road in Miamisburg, Ohio will be oddly quiet.  The sounds of music won’t be blaring out to the night sky.  Lights all hung around will be essentially turned off.  The land won’t be occupied with hundreds of tents sprawling all over. It’s hard to imagine that BarnJam will no longer be the backdrop at the farm, but the new location promises to continue the spirit of what Suttman wanted when he first organized the festival.

The memories and stories made on Suttman’s land, and more importantly the barn, will always live on.

BarnJam 31 will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2015 at Adventures on the Great Miami.  Rain or Shine. $10 at the door, $5 with student ID.

The musical acts performing this year are:

Gin-soaked Angels
Gem City
Dave Zup
Jersey Joe
The Backporch Jam
LOOPRAT
R & D Blues
Chastity Dragons
Andy Mustang and the BarnJam All-Stars

No More “Silence”; An Interview With Tom Gilliam Of Ghost Town Silence

April 10, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

This Saturday, Ghost Town Silence will take the stage in support of the  release of their EP Shadows at Oregon Express.  Formally The Rebel Set,  the set will mark the end of an era for the band.

Before Ghost Town Silence, the five piece group The Rebel Set formed in  2005 when lead singer/guitarist Tom Gilliam and vocalist/upright bass  Gavin Spencer enlisted members Jason Johantges (rhythm guitar), Adam  Kempf (drums/trumpet) and Ken Hall (keyboards/trombone) to join.  With  the releases of their 2008 debut Ghost Town Silence and the 2009 follow  up Across The Relentless Sea, The Rebel Set saw their live performances at  the local establishments filled to near capacity.  Their fanbase followed  them to every place they played at.  In 2010, Gilliam mentions while we  met up recently that they were at their highest point of being together.  It  was hard to not mention The Rebel Set as being one of the most popular  bands in town.

With all of the work they were putting in around that time, life began to start take over.  What was pretty standard of playing on most weekends now transitioned-with the band performing a few shows during the year.  Most of the members starting having their families grow larger when children started coming.  Johantges made the move to Marysville and has been the most recent to have a baby.  Overall-the band started to shift their focus onto their other responsibilities.

Even with all of the changes happening with each member of the band’s lives, they continued to get together and write music.  In August of 2013, The Rebel Set went into the studio to lay down some songs at In the Red Recording, hopeful to release a full-length.  The first five songs were mix, mastered and put on CD while the last half was still being worked on.  In November while the band was taking a break from recording, Hall made the decision to leave the group to concentrate more on his newborn and his other bands-Human Cannonball and Shrug.  With his parts already done with the first five songs, the second half of the full-length was up in the air.

“(Hall) committed to doing the rest of the album,” Gilliam mentions.  “It was just the other five or six songs were in various levels of completion.  We just let him go.”

The Rebel Set decided to release the finished five songs now planned on being released as an EP titled Shadows.  Right as they were getting prepped to set up photography with EP cover, the band faced even more roadblocks.  In 2010, a Tempe, Arizona band that also went under the name The Rebel Set bought the naming rights to trademark themselves.  The signing of Burger Records, supposed radio airplay with their music overseas, and an upcoming tour propelled the group to send a message to Gilliam requesting him to change his band’s name.  It was also mentioned that legal action would be taken if the adjustment wasn’t made.  The Dayton group could have gone to court and fought to keep the name. Gilliam and the band instead opted to adjust the title.

“It just seem that the time was right for one anyways,” Gilliam said.  “There were all these signs that were saying ‘do it’”.

No longer being allowed to be called The Rebel Set, the band went to work on configuring a new name.  While Gilliam went to work scrolling through the internet, other members began logging down names.  Along with it being the title of their first album and Gilliam simply liking it, Ghost Town Silence had some history.  It was also a lyric in the song “130” and had a huge part to do with the cover.  The choice of Ghost Town Silence was chosen by the band during a practice down in Spencer’s basement.  Before he could declare the name to be a contender, Spencer uttered the name out loud.  Ghost Town Silence was greenlighted from that moment on.

The other business that needed to be taken care of was the departure of Kempf in June of last year.  With accepting a new job occupation, the need to fill in the holes became menacing.  Lucky for Ghost Town Silence, the empty roles that Hall and Kempf held in the band were quickly filled with Nathan Warden on keyboards and drummer Brian Winter.  Warden has been already playing at times with the band, but Winter was brand new.

No longer does the looming cloud of uncertainty covers the band.  Gilliam indicated that there was times when the band’s status as active was seriously in doubt.  All was not lost in that time, though.  With the somewhat hiatus that Ghost Town Silence was ensuing, Gilliam took his passion for photographer to another level.  He started snapping pictures of a variety of subjects; raging from landmarks to various events.  Today-Gilliam currently is the founder of the well-known account DaytonGram.  Sharing the Dayton, Ohio area’s past, present and future through photography & community (aka Instameets).

With Winter and Warden being integrated as full-time members of Ghost Town Silence, the duo have brought new life into the band.  Gilliam mentions that has soon as the EP Shadows is released, Ghost Town Silence will be moving on.  The band has been currently working on new material.  With a name change, new members, and an upcoming slot in the upcoming Sideshow festival-it will start a new era.

And it will start this Saturday as soon as their set is finished.

Ghost Town Silence will be releasing their EP Shadows this Saturday at Oregon Express.  Performing with them will be Todd theFox and Akillis Green.  Showtime is at 10pm,  $5cover.  21 and up

‘Songs for a New World’ Review – Sinclair Community College – Embracing the Moment

April 10, 2015 By Russell Florence, Jr.

Jason Robert Brown’s tuneful, reflective and stirring 1995 Off-Broadway song cycle “Songs for a New World” receives a very commendable and engagingly intimate treatment inside Sinclair Community College’s Black Box Theatre.

songs for a new world

(l to r) Andre Tomlinson, Anna Shedon, A.J. Breslin, Natalie Sanders, and Skyler McNeely are featured in Sinclair Community College’s production of Jason Robert Brown’s musical revue “Songs for a New World” (Photo by Patti Celek)

This contemporary musical revue, one of the most popular of its kind, expresses an array of emotions grounded in the expectancy, wonder, vulnerability, and discovery of a single moment. In fact, Brown has stated: “It’s about hitting the wall and having to make a choice, or take a stand, or turn around and go back.” The songs are not connected, which may puzzle or polarize those in search of a traditional plot or story structure. Even so, they certainly strike a chord and stand alone with a sparkling wit, depth and romantic flair only Brown can provide. The varied numbers run an intriguing gamut from Christopher Columbus’ voyage to America (“On the Deck of a Spanish Sailing Ship, 1492”) and an act of sheer desperation (“Just One Step”) to the mysteries of love and desire (“Stars and the Moon”) and the heartache of war (“The Flagmaker, 1775”). Brown, who won Tony Awards for his marvelous scores of “Parade” and “The Bridges of Madison County,” particularly crafts his splendid, uplifting music with rhythmic and vocal complexities which have become his artistic signature. Even so, director Kimberly Borst’s appealing, lyric-driven five-member ensemble, strikingly communicating with each other and the audience on various platforms, embraces the demanding score assuredly and purposefully on the whole.
Borst, setting the revue amid the backdrop of what appears to be a new, mysterious land of possibilities attractively designed by Chris Harmon, assembles some of Sinclair’s strongest vocalists who aptly sell the story in each song aided by Rodney Veal’s expressive choreography. A.J. Breslin, outstanding last fall in “bare” and “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” endearingly connects, revealing a wonderfully soulful urgency in the aforementioned “On the Deck…” as well as the passionate pleas fueling “King of the World.” Skyler McNeely, a memorable King Arthur in “Monty Python’s Spamalot,” steps away from his musical comedy persona to display a mature, sincere tenderness in such relationship-centric numbers as “She Cries” and “I’d Give It All For You.” Anna Sheldon, another standout from “Charlie Brown Christmas,” firmly inhabits her character-driven numbers, particularly the aforementioned “Just One Step” and the humorous “Surabaya-Santa.” Vocal powerhouse Natalie Sanders, tailor-made for this show, effectively blends with her fellow actors, but dynamically steps into the spotlight with “I’m Not Afraid of Anything” and provides great warmth in “Christmas Lullaby.” André Tomlinson, seen in “bare,” is the weakest vocalist but his commitment is unmistakable. Music director Daniel Greene leads a fine, well-balanced five-piece orchestra. Brandy L. Simmons’ costumes and Pauline Humber’s sound design are also noteworthy.
Overall, Sinclair ensures “Songs for a New World” still speaks to the universal power of community, togetherness and hope. In the grand scheme of things, all of us matter and have a special song to sing.

“Songs for a New World” continues through April 11 in the Black Box Theatre, Building 2, Fourth Floor, of Sinclair Community College, 444 W. Third St., Dayton. Jennifer Smith and David Brandt serve as Swings. Performances are Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. Act One: 40 minutes; Act Two: 45 minutes. Tickets are $15 (general admission seating). For tickets or more information, call (937) 512-2808 or visit www.sinclair.edu/tickets.

American Impressionism On Display at the DAI

April 10, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

primary-banner-impressionismThe Dayton Art Institutes laste show, “American Impressionism: The Lure of the Artists’ Colony,” runs through May 31. It comes from the Reading Public Museum in Pennsylvania. It’s a comprehensive look at more than 100 works by American Impressionists from the 1880s through the 1940s, including John Singer Sargent, Mary Cassatt, William Merritt Chase, Childe Hassam, John Twachtman, and many others.

Arranged according to the artists’ colonies that played a critical role in the development of American Impressionism around the turn of the century, this exhibition examines artistic communities at Cos Cob and Old Lyme in Connecticut; Cape Cod, Cape Anne, and Rockport, in Massachusetts; New Hope and Philadelphia in Pennsylvania; Taos, New Mexico; and throughout California. Within each of these colonies, artists were able to teach, collaborate and escape the daily rigors of their city studios. Often located in scenic locations within striking distance of major cities, artists’ colonies served up steady doses of natural beauty and provided ample subject matter for the practitioners.

The resulting selection of lyrical landscapes, ranging from snow-covered hills to sun-filled harbors and seascapes, penetrating portraits, and remarkable still-life paintings documents an important moment in the history of American art.

— If you want to order Ngiri sushi slices or sashimi raw slices, the fee is and additional 25cents per piece.  But it is totally worth it to try 4 or so pieces each visit.   The raw sushi pieces are fresh and delicious.

— The staff couldn’t be friendlier.  They are very helpful, and always willing to explain the menu with a smile.

After trying nearly 40 rolls, we give to you our patented MUST EATS at the Sushi Club !!

MUST EATS:

The Incredible Roll

The Incredible Roll

— THE ALASKA ROLL: Raw salmon, cucumber and avocado .  A simple roll, highlighting fresh salmon.

— SPICY YELLOWTAIL ROLL:  This roll is a rarity in the sushi world.  Raw yellowtail tuna is chopped and mixed with spicy mayo.  The result is a creamy, fresh, raw taste.

— SEXY ON THE BEACH ROLL:  We don’t know if they meant to name it the drink name and messed up or what.  But we don’t care, it’s that good. Spicy yellowtail on the inside, topped with tuna and salmon

— THE INCREDIBLE ROLL: Shrimp Tempura and avacado, topped with spicy crabmeat, eel and sweet chili sauce.  A huge blend of flavors in this one promises to become one of your favorites.

— THE TUNA AMAZING ROLL:  Crabmeat, cucumber and cream cheese, topped with pepper tuna, eel and spicy mayo.  Whoever named this roll, got it right.  Its amazingly naughty.

The Fancy Sushi Roll

The Fancy Roll

— THE SOUTH ALEX ROLL:  A deep fried roll with smoked salmon, avacado and cream cheese.  It is topped with scallions, eels sauce and spicy mayo.  Very filling, this one will put a dent in your all you can eat plans.

—THE FANCY ROLL: Tuna, Salmon and avacado, topped with whitefish, miso, and spicy mayo sauce.  A nice, big mouthful or flavor.

— THE TUNA ROLL: Raw tuna, and avacado, back to the basic melt in our mouth sushi on this one.

Honorable Mention: A couple of items here are worth mentioning because they are good and because we have not seen them in other sushi place before.  Try the raw “Pepper Tuna” Nigiri.  It’s lightly coated with black pepper.   Also try the Fish Tempura roll.  We have never seen these before and it’s not bad.  Finally, they offer Raw Tilapia sushi.  We again have never seen this anywhere before, and it was very much like yellowtail sashimi.  We also love the fact that they have a nice sake selection, and we enjoyed a beer we had never seen on draft before, Kirin Ichiban, one of our fave bottled beers since the early 90’s.

Simply Hyacinth is Simply Amazing

April 8, 2015 By Dayton937

Hyacinth

Hyacinth at Lakme fashion week.

Dr. Hyacinth Paul spent her career as a Chemist; 10 years into retirement, Hyacinth took a bold step towards starting a new career in a world that she knew nothing about…the world of fashion!

After hearing of a friends financial struggles and seeing the high economic devastation left by General Motors closing its doors served as motivation for Hyacinth to be a part of positive change in the Dayton and Miami Valley area. “I wanted to make a platform for American made products and handmade products in Dayton.” And that’s how Simply Hyacinth boutique came to become one of the HAUTEST new shops in Dayton. I have dresses made in the USA for $29.99 and most of my gowns are no more than $129.99.  Local designers can sell their products through Simply Hyacinth as well.

Located in the village area of the Dayton Mall, Simply Hyacinth offers a variety of unique accent furniture, artwork, apparel, handmade jewelry, and accessories from Dayton, OH and around the world that is guaranteed to add a spark to any look or decor. “I want my customers to feel comfortable and enjoy the beauty of Made in the USA products and other merchandise that is sourced from socially responsible companies. It is our mission to provide a great shopping experience.”

“Fashion should make you feel good regardless of your size” according to Hyacinth. On Friday April 10 from 6p-7p and on Saturday April 11, 12p-2p Simply Hyacinth will be hosting a Casting Call in her boutique with the assistance of the Dayton Emerging Fashion Incubator (DE-FI) LLC. The casting call is for a fashion show that Simply Hyacinth will be producing on April 24, 2014. Free to the public, Simply Hyacinth will be showcasing their affordable luxury line that fits all sizes.hyacinth

Influenced greatly by her parents; Hyacinth credits her mom for teaching her the value of education and her Dad for making her fearless. All of which have helped to prepare her for some of the struggles that she faces as a new boutique owner. “I have invested my retirement savings into the venture, I traveled for six months around the US to find made in America products and I went to China to study the competition”

Hyacinth, is not only limiting her new career as a small business owner, she is also looking to become a designer as well. “It was refreshing for me to find out great products that are affordable are made right here in the USA.  Most of these companies are located in Los Angelas.  I know New York and Detroit are gearing toward a lot of manufacturing in the USA. I have found great products made in the USA by women owned companies in Alabama, Massachusetts and Georgia.  Cincinnati used to be a leader in the Fashion industry and we need to find companies that will manufacture in in the tri-state region of Dayton, Cincinnati and Columbus.”

“Buying and creating American made products will certainly create jobs; there is no reason why our developed nation should have poverty levels in the high 20% . If everybody just bought something handmade and something Made in the USA I think there will be a demand for it and we could make an impact in our world.”

hyacinth2There are so many misconceptions about products being made in the USA, the biggest myth is Made in the USA products are expensive– NOT!  Come to my store and find out.” One of the biggest hurdles for Made in the USA products is store owners marking up their prices, which in turns hurts the competitiveness of the products and struggling families opt to purchase cheaper products made overseas.

As far as fashions place in Dayton; Hyacinth says it’s a representation of our culture.  Dayton is a place of self-made and proud people.  I want people to bring back the 20’s when everybody was fashionable and made it a priority in their lives.  I want people to create a fashion statement in what they wear and support the budding talents in the area.”

April 7, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

tedxFollowing two consecutive sell-outs for the series, TEDxDayton organizers announced Tuesday a third event will take place on Oct. 16, 2015, at the Victoria Theatre in downtown Dayton.

“This event keeps evolving, and we now have a community interested in engaging with ideas and learning something new in the spirit of TED,” said TEDxDayton co-chair Sean Creighton. “Our region is full of new, challenging ideas and we can bring those to stage to an audience that wants that experience.”

TEDxDayton also announced speaker applications are open on the TEDxDayton website, www.tedxdayton.com. Organizers are looking for speakers who can shift perspectives and challenge the audience. “This is the year we plan to push our audience to new, even unknown places; surprise them; and leave them feeling they have really learned something,” said TEDxDayton co-chair Stephanie Gottschlich.

Organizers will consider speakers who can present ideas in technology, entertainment, design and social topics, among others. Ideas could include the evolution of social responsibility, the meaning of authenticity to different generations, the future of unmanned systems technology and impact, rehabbing the river for recreation, and the importance of water in our lives, for example. Formats include ideas worth spreading, jaw-dropping technology, an amazing personal story, new research, fresh takes on a unique trend, or any idea that fascinates or educates.

Selected candidates will then be asked to audition in a series of TEDxDayton Call for Speakers. “The Call for Speakers is how our TEDxDayton organizers reach into the community to find the best and brightest – and often undiscovered –  thinkers, doers and creatives to the TEDx stage,” said speakers committee co-chair Ron Rollins. “We can’t wait to see who turns out.”

To submit an application, visit www.TEDxDayton.com. Participants are asked to submit their application by May 4, with a chance to be invited to audition in the Call for Speakers from 5:30 to 8 p.m. May 18 and May 19. Auditions will allow speakers to give a talk up to 5 minutes long before a panel of five judges, with questions following. The Call for Speakers is only open to participants, judges and TEDxDayton organizers. Participants will be contacted within a few weeks about whether they have been selected to be a TEDxDayton speaker.

Play in the Third Annual Office Golf Open

April 3, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

PrintIn 2015, the Mentors Matter program celebrates its 10th year serving teens in greater Dayton. All kids, regardless of their background, need to develop certain assets to become confident, self-reliant adults. Mentors take the opportunity to develop relationships with young adults in the YMCA’s Teens In Action program, reinforcing the importance of time management, personal responsibility, strong work habits and having a positive outlook to help guide a teen’s future.

How do we do this? Through golf of course! Since 2011, The First Tee of Greater Miami Valley has teamed up with the YMCA to offer its youth-centered curriculum to help teens develop interpersonal skills, self-management skills, goal-setting and resiliency. Based upon the foundation of the Nine Core Values and Nine Healthy Habits, The First Tee coaches integrate life lessons along with golf lessons for the teens to develop these skills through fun, seamless activities at the golf course, alongside their mentors.

We want you to get in on the fun! The Office Golf Open is an indoor, 18-hole putting competition hosted in the lobby of Kettering Tower held on Thursday, April 30 – 5:30pm.. With obstacles created from your typical office supplies, the event is fun and open to experienced pros and new golfers alike. How you decide to send your company team is up to you – but it works just like a regular golf event. Sign up your foursome and let the competition begin! You can host your own “qualifying” tournament at your office to determine who represents your organization, or determine your best team of four to send.

2014OGOPictures

The format of the finals will be two best balls of four played on each hole. Since the event is right after work, encourage your office buddies to attend and cheer you on! A cash bar and appetizers will be available for a happy hour for competitors and spectators alike.

Dayton Dragons, Milano’s and Craft Beers-Winning Team!

April 2, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

Milanos_taproomSPOT_cugfqyi0_o8lodi6uA brand new HD video board isn’t the only new addition fans will notice at Fifth Third Field when the season begins on Sunday, April 12th.

The Dayton Dragons today announced another major renovation with the creation of the Milano’s Tap Room at Fifth Third Field.

Located on the first base side of the stadium, the Milano’s Tap Room will feature 10 different craft beer selections on tap. Those selections will rotate throughout the season to feature a wide variety of different breweries and craft beers from around the world and even from right here in our own local community.

The Dragons teamed up with two local craft beer experts in Heidelberg Distributing and Milano’s Atlantic City Submarines to design the new concept.

“Aside from hot dogs, there aren’t many things as synonymous with enjoying a baseball game than an ice cold beer,” Dragons President Robert Murphy said. “We’re always looking for ways to add to the fan experience at a Dragons game. The Milano’s Tap Room is a great new space that will bring even more variety to an already great lineup of beer options.”

“My family has been the local beer distributor in Dayton since 1938, but even before that began my great grandfather was brewing his own craft beers,” Heidelberg CEO Vail Miller said. “That craft brewing process has always been a part of our history. It’s why we’re so passionate about beer. I can’t wait to share that passion with Dragons fans all summer long.”

Located at the end of the first base concourse, the space has been completely renovated into an open-air craft beer lover’s paradise. Two garage doors will be lifted on game days to bring the game atmosphere inside.

Fans inside the Tap Room will notice a distinctly local feel, as the design of the space was closely modeled after the popular Dayton-based Milano’s chain. Big screen TV’s, high-top tables, wall decor and a brand new bar are just some of the Milano’s-themed design elements that were included in the new space.

“We love craft beer,” Milano’s owner John Slaughenhaupt said, “so we were thrilled at the opportunity to bring the Milano’s craft beer experience from our restaurants to Fifth Third Field all summer long.”

Currently under construction, the Milano’s Tap Room will debut at the Dragons Opening Day game on April 12th.
