Chappys Social House Now Open

May 20, 2015 By Lisa Grigsby

Chappys Social House officially opened it’s doors today at 7880 Washington Village Drive in Washington Township, in  the site that was formerly Champps.  This second Chappys location has 48 beer taps, but according to owner Dave Camplin, ” our original location is quite beer-centric, and that works for that location. Here we wanted to expand our drink menu with classic cocktails, like our frozen Pimm’s cup, and we have a nice bourbon list and more selections on our wine list. But our food menu is the same, though we’ll add some specials as we go.”

11169885_648082635322080_7315514896285445840_nFor now Chappys is open from 4pm to midnight during the week, with a full kitchen menu all night, weekends they’ll stay open until 1am and Sunday’s until 11pm.  “We have all these restaurant and retail employees to cater to for late nights, so we want them to know our kitchen is open for them.  They will also have a late night happy hour from 10pm – close with $1 off all draft beer and wine and $2 off appetizers.  We also offer that happy hour Mon – Fri from 2-6pm.   In a few weeks, we’ll add lunch to the menu, opening up at 11am,”shares Camplin.

The restaurant seats 340, with the bar area making up 100 of those seats.  There is even a private room that holds up to 70 guests.  And additional seating is available on the patio.  With new flooring and a cleaned up feel, the wood interior and  old fashioned signage give the restaurant a feel that’s both modern and warm.  Camplin guestimates they have about 110 employees and admits this is quite a big step up from the old days when he ran Sloopy’s in the Oregon District.   The large kitchen held a lot of appeal for Camplin and he looks forward to hosting beer and wine dinners, at the new venue as well as stepping up their catering business.  He also reassures us there are no plan to get rid of the original Chappy’s Tap Room and Grille and thinks the two are far enough apart to each have their own crowd. FullSizeRender 9

Dave and his wife Lori have been working on getting the new place open for a while, originally planning on leasing the building. After  working with Farmers & Merchants Bank and Citiwide, they decided to buy it. Structurally the building didn’t need major work, new flooring, reworking the patio entrance, and some other changes, but says the biggest chunk of work was the kitchen.  Cleaning it up and getting it ready to go was what took the longest, but he said it was a great day when Cindy from the Montgomery County Health Department came in for the final inspection and  her first word was WOW!  He proudly shared they passed with flying colors.

Based on the crowd at the bar an hour after they opened, we predict that Chappy’s Social House will be an even bigger hit than the original.   See you at the bar!

Learn to Write, Up Close and Personal

May 20, 2015 By Dayton937

Sharon Short

Sharon Short

Sharon Short was literally shaking when she pulled up to the curb before her first Antioch Writers Workshop in 1990.

“I remember thinking, ‘I can’t do this,’” she said. “But then I thought, ‘This is where I told my husband I’d be all week. What am I going to do? Drive around?’”

Instead, she went in.

“The people were really warm and welcoming,” said Short, now executive director of AWW and a published writer. “I can’t think of any other conference I’ve been to where I’m in touch with people a year later, much less later 25 years later. That’s pretty powerful.”

Now, it’s time for writers of all stripes to still those quivering limbs and join the 2015 summer workshop, the crown jewel of AWW and featuring literary queen Nikki Giovanni. Cincinnati native Giovanni, one of the world’s best-known African American poets, will serve as the keynoter during this year’s summer workshop, held July 11-17 at Antioch University Midwest in Yellow Springs. The deadline to register is June 20 for this workshop that celebrates all things writing, as well as being part of a community of writers.2767771

“The week-long summer workshops is a very immersive experience,” Short said. “There are lots of online learning opportunities, and you certainly can gain plenty of craft tips from those. But when you’re together with other people who want to do this, you’re affirmed writing is a good and cool thing to be doing with part of your life. You’ll develop a support network and make connections that can last a lifetime and carry you through what’s next.

“Among all creative arts, writing can be very much a solitary activity,” Short added. “But getting that work out there in the world and feeling nurtured to keep creating that work is very much a community process.”

This year, AWW also celebrates its 30th anniversary.

“With any organization, especially a nonprofit, reaching the 30-year milestone is amazing,” Short said. “We started with Antioch College, and AWW was the brainchild of two instructors for whom we now have scholarships named: Bill Baker and Justin Jerome.

“It’s significant not only to be around that long,” she added, “but to keep a week-long immersive model that has changed in some ways but at its heart has stuck to this model: every summer, we dedicate time to get together and focus on creative writing and being a community of creative writers.”

And that community is inclusive of faculty, who also embrace the community philosophy of AWW and are as much a part of the experience as participants are.

“They remember what that’s like when you’re starting out and like to help people,” Short said.

AWW also fosters a community atmosphere because the summer workshop — along with all its events, including monthly seminars, fall and spring workshops, literary salons, and more — are a good fit for writers of all levels.

5454163“If you’re just interested in writing and haven’t written anything since high school, consider at least coming to the keynote, which is free,” Short said. “But then come back the next morning to hear Nikki Giovanni’s craft talk — it may be just enough to get started again, to find motivation to continue a work in progress or inspiration for a piece in the works.”

The AWW summer workshop has a variety of options in its schedule, including:
The Full Week Experience: Attend the Saturday evening keynote on July 11 and Sunday Morning craft class July 12 with Nikki Giovanni, morning classes Monday-Friday (July 13-17) in fiction, poetry, nonfiction and professional skills for writers, and one afternoon seminar of your choice Sunday-Friday (July 12-17) focusing on either poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction (all of which include bringing a 10-20 page manuscript to workshop with a leader and peers) or “Getting Started,” which does not require a manuscript.

“A La Carte” Experience: Choose from these options:

  • Saturday Seminar: July 11, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. — a one day prequel to the summer full-week Experience, focusing on inspiration and various craft topics. Includes Giovanni’s Saturday evening keynote and Sunday morning craft class.
  • Morning Classes — Attend the Saturday evening keynote and Sunday morning craft class, as well as morning classes Monday-Friday (July 13-17) in fiction, poetry, nonfiction and professional skills for writers.
  • Afternoon Only Seminar in ”Getting Started” — Attend the Saturday evening keynote and Sunday morning craft class and the afternoon Getting Started seminar (Sunday-Friday, July 12-17).
  • Nikki Giovanni Saturday evening keynote (July 11) and Sunday Morning craft class (July 12) only.

“If anyone out there is feeling alone as a writer or feeling that writing is something other people out there do, we want them to know that’s not the case,” Short said. “I think people will be amazed at how truly welcoming and warm they’ll find the environment. This is one of the most diverse and friendliest writers workshops writers will attend.”

Jackie O’s Tap Takeover At The Barrel House

May 19, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

cwb94wxnx6gj7p5irfqmg7ckkqygjr52We are excited to host this Tap Takover with special guest Johnny from Jackie O’s. Come on out and enjoy four of their awesome beers on tap!

Mandala Citra … This double IPA is solely hopped with one hop allowing both the brewer and the consumer to fully taste and smell all the pure hop character

Morning Cloak … A true session hop delight with grainy character from munic and wheat to add lightness to the grist. Aroma is full of oranges, lemon rind, floral nuances, and touches of grapefruit pith

Razz Wheat … 40% white wheat and 60% malted two row create a nice subtle wheat ale. 420lbs of all natural raspberry puree is added during fermentation giving this beer a unique and playful personality. The rosy haze and sticky head embody a continuum of sour sweetness held together by a wheat back bone

Hop Ryot … Hop Ryot has a unique character thanks to the use of Rye malt and Simcoe hops: rye malt adds some soft spicy notes to the beer, and a generous amount of Simcoe hops adds a big sticky-citrus aroma and flavor. It finishes very dry and pleasant, beckoning another sip

Big Day for Owner of Dayton Beer Company

May 16, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

Pete HilgemanIt’s a huge day for the owner of The Dayton Beer Company – not only is he getting married at his new brewery today, but his “Batch 100” golden strong ale was also chosen from over 350 beers to win the Alltech Commonwealth Cup. The competition is the only professional beer competition in Kentucky and boasted 350 beers from 20 countries and five continents competing for the title.

The top award was announced at the Alltech Craft Brews and Food Fest Saturday in Lexington, an event that in its second year, drew 51 national and local craft breweries to nearly 50,000 square feet in Heritage Hall, double the size of last year’s space.

180 brews were sampled by thirsty patrons, with special tappings every 15 minutes that kept the excitement level high. Kentucky craft distillers from across the state were pouring samples, for those looking for a bourbon, rye, brandy or even absinthe fix.

Food vendors dispensed samples and meals as many patrons stayed and socialized, and debated which brew or cider to sample next from breweries across the country as local bands played onstage.

Batch 100 from The Dayton Beer Company of Dayton, Ohio, is a Belgian-style ale filtered and tank conditioned and made with can10931122_412809765568588_8183777044630127401_n-1dy sugar. The judges noted its subtle malty sweetness, pleasant dry finish, high carbonation, and nice hop quality.

The small brewery is headed by Pete Hilgeman, the groom getting married today.

Brewery representative John Wiley (co-host of What’s Brewing Dayton) traveled from Dayton, Ohio to accept the award. The brewery won eight medals last year in the competition, and won another five this year. The brewery is “proud to be the first true microbrewery in the Dayton area in over 50 years and describes its beer as “hand-crafted with no automation in small batches.”

Other entrants received gold, silver and bronze medals for quality brews. Lexington’s Blue Stallion Brewing Co. won four silver medals and five bronzes. Country Boy Brewing Co. of Lexington was awarded one silver medal and two bronzes. The brewery winner last year, Zip’s Brewhouse of Hungary, also picked up several medals for its brews.

Winners were chosen by an expert panel of judges based on blind judging of appearance, aroma, flavor, body, style and quality.

Chalk Art Comes To Life At The Greene Today!

May 16, 2015 By Lisa Grigsby

15930723563660212125The streets of The Greene will come alive today as artists create living art using only pastel chalk to bring awareness to national mental health awareness month from 10am – 10pm!

Watching art come to life is considered a performance art and has an immediacy that gives every piece a uniqueness that can never be truly duplicated. You can vote for your favorite, by making a donation to Life Essentials!

Take part in a family scavenger hunt and a kid’s chalking area. Wind down with a block party in the evening. The event will support Life Essentials’ unique and specialized programs that enable seniors and people living with mental illness to have a greater quality of life.

Special guest artist Jennifer Nichols was born into an artistic family.  Her grandfather, Harry E. Stinson, was a recognized Sculptor, Painter and Art Professor.  Jennifer’s formal art training started in high school, and she began to accumulate awards and sell her early watercolor paintings.

Later, Jennifer attended UCLA, graduating with a degree in Design, focusing on costume & clothing design.  She continued to pursue painting while working in advertising and raising her two daughters in Dayton, Ohio.  Jennifer’ work was exhibited at various galleries and events in Ohio between 1992 – 1999.  She also was very involved with the Dayton Visual Arts Center, serving as their president and as a board member and contributing artist.

In 1999, she moved to Palm Beach, Florida.  In 2004, Jennifer and her daughters began participating in the Street Painting Festival in Lake Worth, Florida, which is the largest street painting event in the United States, attracting 100,000 visitors each year.   In 2012, Jennifer founded the International Street Painting Society, as a way to help other street artists connect and be more successful, and help street painting be seen as a legitimate art form.

Jennifer’s work shows a unique talent for capturing faces and expressions.  By working to duplicate the colors and shading of the original art, Jennifer stays true to the original work of art.  Using soft pastel chalk on pavement or concrete surfaces, these large works of art are washed away after each event.  Jennifer’s philosophy is that street painting is as much about the performance and execution, as it is about the art.  The immediacy and challenges of the “canvas”, weather and medium make each piece special and unique.  Usluggo_solo_springlever_hiresUsually over the course of 2 days, each piece comes to life before your eyes.  Constantly looking for new challenges, she is open to new materials and processes, and will chalk on just about anything.

David Zinn temporary street art is composed entirely of chalk, charcoal and found objects, and is always improvised on location. Most of these drawings have appeared on sidewalks in Ann Arbor and elsewhere in Michigan, but some have surfaced as far away as subway platforms in Manhattan and construction debris in the Sonoran Desert. Zinn’s chalk work began in 2001 as an excuse to linger outdoors, but has since achieved global notoriety through the sharing of photos on Facebook, Huffington Post UK, The Cheezburger Network, Street Art Utopia, and Archie McPhee’s Endless Geyser of Awesome. His most frequent characters are Sluggo (seen here) , a bright green monster with stalk eyes and irreverent habits, and Philomena, a phlegmatic flying pig. As of 2013, there have been a lot of mice as well.

GREY GARDENS and New Juliette Binoche Film at THE NEON!

May 15, 2015 By Jonathan McNeal

MV5BMjAwMTg3MDE0NF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNjQ1ODQyNTE@._V1_SX214_AL_Hello Everyone,

Over the past 14 years that I’ve been at THE NEON, THE D TRAIN ranks as one of the biggest box office disappointments we’ve ever had. We had to lose it quickly. Today, we opened a new film with Juliette Binoche and Kristen Stewart – CLOUDS OF SILS MARIA. (Stewart became the first American to ever win a Cesar award for her role in this film. The Cesar Awards are France’s equivalent to our Academy Awards.) In addition, we will open the 40th Anniversary Restoration of GREY GARDENS – the documentary that became the basis for numerous books, an HBO narrative film and even a Broadway musical. We will continue our run of WHILE WE’RE YOUNG for one more week. Next week, we’ll open the gorgeous new film FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD!

Synopsis for CLOUDS OF SILS MARIA: “Maria Enders (Juliette Binoche) is an actress at the peak of her international career who is asked to perform in a revival of the play that made her famous twenty years earlier. Back then she played the role of Sigrid, an alluring young woman who disarms and eventually drives her boss Helena to suicide. Now she is being asked to step into the other role, that of the older Helena. She departs with her assistant (Kristen Stewart) to rehearse in Sils Maria, a remote region of the Alps. A young Hollywood starlet with a penchant for scandal (Chloe Grace Moretz) is to take on the role of Sigrid, and Maria finds herself on the other side of the mirror, face to face with an ambiguously charming woman who is, in essence, an unsettling reflection of herself. (Sundance Selects) Click this LINK to visit the film’s official site.

Synopsis for GREY GARDENS: The original documentary from 1975 has received a 40th Anniversary Restoration! This is one of my favorite movies. In fact, when the musical adaptation premiered (before its move to Broadway), I scurried to NYC to see it. “Meet Big and Little Edie Beale: mother and daughter, high-society dropouts, and reclusive cousins of Jackie Onassis. The two manage to thrive together amid the decay and disorder of their East Hampton, New York, mansion, making for an eerily ramshackle echo of the American Camelot. An impossibly intimate portrait, this 1976 documentary by Albert and David Maysles, codirected by Ellen Hovde and Muffie Meyer, quickly became a cult classic and established Little Edie as a fashion icon and philosopher queen.” (taken from Janus Films) Click this LINK to visit the film’s official site.

“Stivers School for the Arts-Film & Animation Studio Presents THE SHOWCASE. This compilation of short films includes live action & animation and ranges from comedy to documentary. Some of these films have already won regional and state awards. Following the show, there will be a Q & A with the student filmmakers. All proceeds go towards updating equipment in the Stivers Film and Animation studio. The Showcase runs one night only – Wednesday, May 20th at 7:30pm. Tickets are$5.00 in advance and $7.00 on the day of the event.. Tickets are now available at THE NEON’s box office and Stivers School for the Arts. Please join us for an evening of entertainment as we celebrate this next generation of filmmakers.” (taken from press release)

On Tuesday, May 26 at 7:30, T.J.’s Place of Hope will host a screening of I AM A GIRL. This film is “an inspirational feature length documentary that paints a clear picture of the reality of what it means to be a girl in the 21st century. Feminism may have promised equality and sought a better and fairer world for women but the reality is that girls make up almost a quarter of the world’s population yet still face the greatest discrimination of any group in the world. Technology and science offer unimaginable potential but we still struggle to ensure men and women are afforded equal opportunities. Yet in spite of these obstacles, girls have found extraordinary ways to persevere and in our documentary we hear their stories of strength, hope, courage and a refusal to be second best.” (taken from Gathr press notes) Advanced tickets are $10 each and must be purchased on Gathr’s website. If tickets remain on the day of the event, they will be available at our box office one hour before the screening.  Click this LINK to visit the site and purchase your ticket.

Carol Quinones is trying to bring a special, one-time screening of TRACE AMOUNTS to town on Wednesday, June 10 at 7:30. That said, 50 tickets need to be reserved by May 30 in order to proceed. Click this LINK to reserve your ticket – they’re $12.50 each. “After recovering from a sickness that would bring him to the edge of despair, Eric Gladen began researching the science behind what had made him so sick. His research led him straight into one of the biggest medical debates of all time, the question of whether or not childhood vaccines are causing Autism. He would end up quitting his career, moving into an RV, and traveling the country interviewing experts and piecing together thousands of studies and leaked documents. But Eric wasn’t focused on the vaccines themselves, he was focused on something that belongs nowhere near vaccines- mercury.”

Mark your calendars now for a special screening of a new, crowd-pleasing documentary – TAB HUNTER CONFIDENTIAL. It will screen Thursday, June 18 at 7:30 (tickets $8 each). I’ll include more details in next week’s newsletter.

Thanks for your continued support.
We hope to see you this weekend!

All the best,
Jonathan

Salmon from Brock

Brock Masterson’s Catering will be grilling up Salmon at Big Brews and Blues this Friday !

Diabetes Dayton

Riverscape is the place to be this Friday night.  Why?  Because a charity event for the Diabetes Dayton  is gonna rock your world, in a “bluesy” sorta way.

The extravaganza is called Big Brews and Blues, and it is one of our favorite annual festivals.   The fest has over 70 beers to sample and of course they have some exceptional blues bands as well.   There is even a charitable auction at the end of the night.

But this is Food Adventures, and we tend to focus on the food vendors as much as the beer selection.  So, let us give you our soulful take on this special night for a special cause.

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— The event takes place Friday night May 15th from 5pm – 9pm at Riverscape

— You need tickets to attend: $30 prepay by Thursday or $40 at the gate, proceeds to to Diabetes Dayton

— Over 70 beers will be available for samples and 3 different blues performances are slated for the stage.

— Food Vendors will be selling various eats during the event.

Dayton’s Premier Wine & Gourmet Food Festival is Sunday!

May 15, 2015 By Lisa Grigsby

DigitalAssests-fleurs-06Twenty four years ago, when Vail Miller of Heidelberg and Mike Frank of Arrow Wine  thought up the event that has come to be known as Fleurs et Vin, it was to bring wine to the people in a way that wasn’t stuffy and thus the Party in the Park began. Now moved on to the second generation of these influential families in the Dayton Drinking scene, the party continues to grow.

This Sunday, May 17th at 1pm there will be over 300+ wines to sample under a huge tent in Welcome Park, which is behind UD Arena.  And we all know that the taste of wine can change when paired with food, so you’ll have food samples from 20 of the region’s finest independent restaurants.  Offerings will include Lamb Taco’s, Slaw Dogs, Grilled Salmon, Carved Beef, BBQ Pork, Bacon Wrapped Dates, Chevre with Olive Tapenade, Shrimp & Crab stuffed Ravioli and so much more…

‘Shrek’ Review – Playhouse South – Come Look at the Freaks

May 14, 2015 By Russell Florence, Jr.

What makes you special makes you strong. This inspirational mantra, a celebration of self-empowerment and individuality, is the feel-good foundation of Playhouse South’s absolutely delightful production of composer Jeanine Tesori and lyricist/librettist David Lindsay-Abaire’s 2008 tunefest “Shrek The Musical,” based on the 2001 Academy Award-winning film and 1990 novel.

shrek 2

www.play(left to right) Tia Seay as Donkey, Esther Hyland as Fiona, Zach King as Shrek, Jim Brown as Lord Farquuad and the cast of Playhouse South’s production of “Shrek The Musical.” (Contributed photo)

Being labeled a freak can be cringe-inducing or hurtful, but in this context it’s something to take extreme pride in. After all, swamp ogre Shrek could care less about what people think about him. His primary aim is to protect his humble surroundings, which have been overrun by a bevy of fairy tale characters ousted from their habitats by Lord Farquuad’s startling decree. In order to save his home, Shrek agrees to rescue the lovely, abandoned Princess Fiona and return her to the villainous, diminutive Farquuad, who plans to marry her and rightfully become king of Duloc. But along the way, and with a wisecracking Donkey in tow, Shrek and Fiona grow to a newfound appreciation of love’s fundamental ability to look beyond outwardly appearances and treasure the glories of inner beauty.

Director Becki Norgaard, spearheading an entertaining, over 50-member cast, astutely embraces the conceptual challenges within the fanciful yet imbalanced material, particularly hindered by a few frivolous, forced gags from Lindsay-Abaire. Instead of overpowering the stage with elaborate scenery, Norgaard opts for slightly scaled-down sets (efficiently designed by Jim Brown) properly establishing tone while stirring the imagination. Norgaard retains a few elements of the Broadway and national touring productions, but her vision, accented by Annette Looper’s lively choreography, is refreshing overall, especially in such playful numbers as “Travel Song” and “Morning Person.” She also scores points for reimagining the role of the Dragon by placing a clear emphasis on its large, intimidating wings.
Zach King delivers one of his finest, most endearing performances as the titular green outcast. King skillfully conveys the menace, charm, frustration, and vulnerability fashioning Shrek’s amiable journey, heightened by his defiant, powerful rendition of “Build a Wall.” The equally radiant Esther Hyland, perfectly compatible with King, marvelously inhabits the multifaceted Fiona who harbors a secret in her quest for true love. Rising to levels of role originator Sutton Foster, Hyland’s sharp, mature instincts humorously drive “I Know It’s Today” (nicely shared with Cate Shannon and Stephanie Penrod) and heightens her character’s appealing emotional arc as Fiona warms to Shrek’s prickly nature. Strong vocalist Tia Seay, a recent standout in Dare to Defy Productions’ concert version of “Hair,” hilariously and energetically fits the bill as the loudmouth Donkey, quickly bonding and molding an enjoyable rapport with King and Hyland. The aforementioned Brown brings vengeful glee and apt physicality to his wonderfully heartless portrayal of Farquuad. The dynamic Parisa Samavati nearly steals the show belting the soul-flavored, encore-worthy “Forever” as the domineering Dragon smitten with Donkey. Brent Hoggatt (Pinocchio), Mackensie Vonderbrink (Gingy/Rag Doll), Aaron Eechaute-Lopez (Big Bad Wolf), Mary Nunnery (Ugly Duckling), Donna Cason (Wicked Witch), Janelle Chamness (Fairy Godmother), Angie Thacker (Mama Bear), Lisa Glover (Humpty Dumpty), and Aaron Brewer (Mad Hatter) are among the colorfully cheery array of fairy tale cohorts storming the stage to deliver knockout versions of “Story of My Life” and “Freak Flag.”
Additionally, the production is vibrantly and eye-catchingly costumed to the hilt by Meagan Kuchan and her impressive team (Melissa Fogle, Kathleen Carroll, the aforementioned Cason and Nunnery, Summer Lehman, Rachel Annabo Smith, Maggie Carroll, Aurora Nunnery, Rachel LaFountain Earich, Jordan Norgaard, Jenni Cypher, Tonia Scearce, Ian Meadows, and Jess Evans). Music director Lorri Topping and conductor Jason W. Clark expertly handle the melodic, introspective score.

In the final minutes of this truly enjoyable showcase comprised of varying ages and backgrounds, I couldn’t help but think of just how magnetic and inclusive community theater can be. It really is a big bright beautiful world always open to accept and embrace the freak within us all.

“Shrek The Musical” continues through May 17 inside the Clark Haines Theatre (Kettering Board of Education Building) 3750 Far Hills Ave., Kettering. Performances are Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Act One: 70 minutes; Act Two: 60 minutes. Tickets are $13 for adults, $11 for seniors and military, and $8 for students. Around the World in 30 Bites!

May 13, 2015 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Petit Fours

The “Petit Fours” at the France booth are delicate bites of heaven

Dayton’s 42 year old, A World A’ Fair, International Festival is set for this upcoming weekend.

Yes, from Friday until Sunday, Daytonians will be showing their heritage spirit through arts, crafts, clothing, dancing and our favorite part… FOOD !

Thirty booths will be set up, each for a different part of the world.  The purpose is to educate and to wow the crowds with their individual uniqueness.  But we buy tickets for one reason… the chance for a  great Food Adventure, where we can eat ourselves around the world in 3o bites.  Did we mention there is wine and beer???

Where else can you grab sushi, Puerto Rican rice and beans, haggis, a gyro, french pastries and a cannoli while watching African dancers?

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— The event takes place at the Dayton Convention Center

   Festival Hours:
   Friday, May 15,  5:00pm – 11:00pm
   Saturday, May 16,  11:00am – 11:00pm
   Sunday, May 17,  11:00am – 6:00pm

— Tickets are $8 for adults, $4 for children at the door

— Full schedule of dancers and booths can be found at http://www.aworldafair.org/

Travel the world with your tastebuds, without leaving Dayton.  Here are some of our favorites..

THE MUST EATS at the World A’Fair festival !!

MUST EATS:

Gyro

Dollar for Dollar – the best deal, for the flavor is the Greek Gyro

— GYROS at THE GREECE BOOTH:  These are the same ones they serve at Greek fest.  They also come in chicken gyro and vegetarian, but we prefer the traditional Gyros.  Pound for pound, probably the best deal at the festival.

— APPEL FLAPPEN at the NETHERLANDS BOOTH: People wait in lines that wrap around the arena for these powdered, deep fried apple rings.  One bite and you will see what all the excitement is about, and you will wish you would have ordered a few more.

— TIRAMISU at the ITALY BOOTH: Coffee like, creamy and dashes of chocolate.  This is dessert done right.  Try one of these cubes of perfection.  So good, it puts you in a trance.

— SAAG PANEER at the INDIA BOOTH: Make sure you get some of this Indian spinach dish and get a piece of Naan Bread too for dipping.  A great dish that is satisfying and vegetarian as well.

— PETIT FOURS at the FRANCE BOOTH:  Tiny bits of heaven  Choose from a nice selection and go to town.  Treat yourself, you deserve it after traveling the world.

Brews

Grab a cold Heiney at World A’Fair

— THE CREAM PUFFS at the SLOVIC BOOTH: Probably the best single item at the festival.  It is delicious and rich like it should be.   A generous helping of cream, on a huge crescent puff, this is grand finale to any visit to the World A’ Fair.

— BEERS at the GERMAN, SCOTLAND and IRELAND BOOTHS:  Ireland and Germany typically have a couple of authentic beers on draft.   These are must drinks.  Nothing says World A’fair like a guy in a kilt pouring you a cold one with no underwear,

Here is a start, now you have a road map for the best food in the World.  Every year new food items are introduced, so keep your eyes peeled.  There will be so much delicious, international food, that you simply wont have the time or the hunger pains to try them all.  No worries, the fest is 3 days long !

I have used Link bikes for five trips so far, and will be using them regularly in the future.”

Visit the Link booth at Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 15 at RiverScape MetroPark from 7:00 AM – 9:00 AM, and the first 100 riders will receive a free 24-Hour Membership. You’ll also be able to enjoy a free pancake breakfast.   Bike Miami Valley staff will be running a virtual kiosk to accommodate more riders who want to visit RiverScape.
