Or Super Bowl Sunday. Or Thanksgiving. Only this holiday is ALL ABOUT THE BACON. One day a year to truly celebrate your love for bacon. Think of all the turkey you eat on Thanksgiving–and you don’t even really like turkey!

But you love bacon, and you need to do right by bacon on bacon’s special day. Don’t hold back on bacon’s holiday. Break out of your usual bacon routine. Or you can read this previous post about how to cure bacon.

9. Eat Bacon With Every Meal

Breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. Start off the morning by cookin’ up a pound (or 2 or 3 or 7) of bacon and add it to your meals throughout the day. Bacon and eggs for breakfast. ‘Outside Mullingar’ Review – Dayton Theatre Guild – Learning to Love

August 29, 2015 By Russell Florence, Jr.

The Dayton Theatre Guild’s 71st season opens with an outstanding local premiere of John Patrick Shanley’s 2014 Tony Award-nominated dramedy “Outside Mullingar,” a poignant look at romance between fortysomethings on a cattle and sheep farm in rural Ireland.

outside mullingar

(l to r) Dave Nickel as Tony Reilly, Mike Beerbower as Anthony Reilly, Teresa Connair as Rosemary Muldoon, and Connie Fowler Strait as Aoife Muldoon in the Dayton Theatre Guild’s local premiere of John Patrick Shanley’s 2014 Tony Award-nominated romantic comedy “Outside Mullingar” (Contributed photo)

Deftly directed by David Shough, “Outside Mullingar,” sharing an Irish kinship to the plays of Martin McDonagh in terms of intimate authenticity, carries itself as contemporary (it begins in 2008) although it has a wonderful throwback quality at its core as if it could have been written 40 years ago. Neighbors Anthony Reilly and Rosemary Muldoon have been lifelong pals but due to mutual awkwardness and fear they never acted upon their obvious attraction, especially the shy, introverted and virginal Anthony whose heart remains crushed by the rejection he faced as a teenager from local lass Fiona. It is only through prodding and encouragement from the determined Rosemary, particularly in the excellently written final scene, that Anthony is able to release himself from his lonely, emotional shell and simply accept the possibilities a meaningful relationship can bring. As so, I can’t help but link Anthony to Robert in Stephen Sondheim’s “Company” considering both bachelors ultimately realize “alone is alone – not alive.”

Shanley, very adept at creating gender conflicts as evidenced in his Academy Award-winning screenplay for “Moonstruck” and his Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning drama “Doubt,” is truly at his best when Anthony and Rosemary’s bickering, flavorful bond is front and center. Less successful is his subplot about property and family rivalry commonly addressed by Anthony’s gruff father Tony and Rosemary’s gentle mom Aoife. The strip of land dividing the two farms has significance as backstory but doesn’t necessarily engage. Even so, Tony and Aoife are genuinely charming catalysts for comedy with a slight Archie and Edith Bunker sensibility.

Mike Beerbower, in his remarkable Guild debut, fully embraces Anthony’s idiosyncrasies and good-natured persona to deliver a terrifically sensitive and endearing portrayal packaged in fidgety beauty. The stellar Teresa Connair, in one of her most expressive, intuitive and understated performances, captivates to the hilt especially as the opinionated, feisty and humorous Rosemary (who particularly feels the Bible should be renamed “The Book of Ugly Stories”) tries to dissect Anthony’s indifference throughout and strongly advises Tony not to be so unsympathetic about Anthony and his commitment to the Reilly farm. Dave Nickel, who appeared in Shough’s production of “An Inspector Calls” last season, is delightfully persnickety overall but becomes particularly powerful toward the end of the play in a tear-jerking scene with Beerbower that finds Tony in need of late night confession. Connie Fowler Strait, in her enjoyable Guild debut, tenderheartedly accents the cast as the likable if underwritten Aoife.

In addition, Shough serves as co-scenic designer with Chris Newman, who returns to the Guild having terrifically designed “Heartbreak House” and “An Inspector Calls.” The efficiently cozy unit sets they created breezily serve the material and are swiftly handled by the stage crew in some of the finest scene changes ever witnessed at the Guild. In fact, the nearly breathtaking final transition feels impressively cinematic. Shough also serves as lighting designer and effectively partners with K.L. Storer to contribute sound design.

“You can’t live against your life,” Rosemary warns Anthony. There is compelling truth in her statement and the overriding fact that this crowd-pleasing production is absolutely unforgettable.

“Outside Mullingar” continues through Sept. 6 at the Dayton Theatre Guild, 430 Wayne Ave., Dayton. Performances are Fridays at 8 p.m., Saturdays at 5 p.m., and Sundays at 3 p.m.  The play is performed in 1 hour and 40 minutes without intermission. Tickets are $20 for adults, $18 for seniors and $13 for students. Call (937) 278-5993 or visit www.daytontheatreguild.org.

Treadway’s Gardens: On the Vine Since ’69

August 28, 2015 By Dayton937 2 Comments

Mrs and Mr Treadway, Owners of Treadway’s Garden since 1969

93 year old Frank Treadway sits in the shade, on a swing with his wife, in front of his Centerville farm and produce stand.  He talks about getting married in 1946, and driving from his Cumberland Kentucky home to Dayton on his honeymoon..  He and his wife fell in love with Dayton, and the rest as they say, is history.  And what a history it is, Treadway’s Garden, on State Route 48 near Social Row Rd., has left a legacy of fresh farm produce through 3 generations.

The whole family is involved, even grandkids, students and part time adults.  The result is a haven of produce and flowers that has become a staple in Centerville.

Treadway’s Gardens is a favorite stop of Chef House, The Big Ragu and Hungry Jax.  Why?  The inviting atmosphere, the great local fruits and veggies. And finally, of course the  friendly service is the clincher.   You feel welcome, they treat you like family.   It is a true joy to stop by the garden and see what’s happening.

And who better that the Food Adventures Crew to give you the inside scoop on Treadway’s!

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— TREADWAY’S GARDEN is located at 10245 Dayton Lebanon Pike, in Washington Township/ Centerville

Ripe, Red Tomatoes ready for salad, sauce or slicing

— Treadway’s Hours – 7 days a week , 10am – 7pm, Memorial day thru Halloween.

During Sept and Oct., they usually stay open until 6pm.

Don’t forget they sell Frazier Fur Christmas trees from North Carolina in the winter !

— A true family owned business.  Mr. and Mrs. Treadway started selling produce at the farm in 1969.   Today their three children all have a hand in the farm.  Stephanie has been running the operations for the past 9 years.  Her brother Jeff tends to the bees, and honey making.   Janet, who recently retired form teaching, is now involved with the farm too!  All of the grandkids and that have lived in the area have worked at the garden and benefited in a lot of ways.  They learned the meaning of hard work and family values.  Mr. Treadway told Big Ragu, “If you wan’t to lose that belly, I can get you working here picking some produce in the field.”  Farm chores are a heck of a workout.

Chef House tours the farm with Stephanie Treadway Wilson

–— Stephanie Treadway Wilson took us on a tour of the 10 acre farm.  They rotate farming 5 acres each year.  We saw the bees and an old smoker near the farm house.  Those cluster of structures are some of the oldest buildings in Montgomery county.

— They have a “pick your own” option for some of the vegetables throughout the summer.  In past decades, adults would mostly do this, in recent years, there has been a trend where parents take their kids to the field to help them learn about freshly grown fruits and vegetables.  There motto is “Our garden is your garden.”  Each child who comes to the garden gets a free Zinnia Flower from the farm.  They make you feel welcome at every turn.

Treadway’s is very kid friendly !

— There are also some local sauces, jams, etc. for sale at the garden, including Housemade Sriracha and Housemade Hot Honey, which of course our close to our heart.

— Giving back to the community – Treadway’s supports many local organizations such as MDA and Alzheimers local charities.  The Big Ragu can remember when he worked MDA fundraising events from 1994-2002, the Treadway family would donate much of the concession stand produce used for hamburger and sausage toppings.   Stephanie’s 3 children all worked for the MDA camp as well.  The family is humble and quiet about their local charity involvement, but we want to sing those praises here.

Now it is time to taste some of the bountiful harvest.   They are all fresh and delicious products, but we have our faves.

Without further delay, here at the MUST EATS at Treadway’s Garden !

Take a bite out of the delicious peaches, at Treadway’s

MUST EATS:

— PEACHES: The cleanest, plumpest, juiciest peaches known to man are here.  We find ourselves unable to get to the car before taking a chomp out of one of the peaches we bought.  Freshness in every bite, tell us what you think after trying one of these gems.  Hungry Jax and The Big Ragu recommend these as favorites.

— NATURAL HONEY: Made on site from bees on site !  Mr Treadway himself and son Jeff tend to the bees.  The result is your benefit, with some of the tastiest honey you have ever tried. On toast, or drizzled over good food, you cant go wrong. We also love cooking with this stuff!

— SWEET CORN: Some of the best in the area and 50 cents per ear.  Like all of Treadway’s produce, you can count on them to be beautiful, fresh and delicious.  We have been making them 3 ways this summer: steaming, boiling and grilling the corn in the husk.    It kicks your cookouts up a notch.  So sweet, so delicious, we add a bit of butter and salt and as Jackie Gleason said .. “How sweet it is !”  The Big Ragu highly recommends this corn on the cob!

Lots of Pepper Choices from Hot to Not

— CANTALOUPES:  Hungry Jax says you cant go wrong with the cantaloupe at Treadway’s Garden.  Juicy, fresh and beautiful, they make the healthiest of summer time treats and eats.  A versatile fruit, this deliciousness goes well with practically any meal.

— TOMATOES : Giant, plump and juicy tomatoes in trays adorn the greeting area.  The display speaks for itself.  Slice them up alone with some salt or sugar, or use them in a salad.  We prefer a slice with our grilled burgers.   Also, Hungry Jax and Big Ragu like them for helping make the perfect marinara sauce.  Here is a Food Adventure tip from Chef House: The 50% off tomato bin is great!

— ONIONS: Some of the best looking, large onions around are found here.  We asked Mr Treadway, what is your favorite thing on the farm? He answered, :Onions and tomatoes! You can make a meal with them by themselves.”  You know what, he is right.  Listen to the expert with 68 years of farming experience.

Green Peppers

— SUPER CHILE PEPPERS:  These are some very tasty peppers. They are grown like Thai chilies, pointing up towards the sky, but they are in the cayenne family, which are not as hot as Thai Chiles.  Chef House knows good, spicy food, and she says these peppers are perfect for cooking.

— CAYENNE PEPPERS:  You have never seen cayenne peppers this big.  Chef House recommends these magnificent looking peppers to  give some heat to your summer cooking.  Truth be told, Chef House also walks around sometimes, munching on these peppers.  Now that’s a hot habit.

— PUMPKINS:  Chef House is always impressed and obsessed with the beautiful pumpkins at Treadway’s. Carving or cooking, you have found the perfect local place to grab your Halloween and Thanksgiving Pumpkin needs

Sweet Corn at Treadway’s Garden on State Route 48 in Centerville

What’s on the horizon for Treadway’s Gardens?  Frank’s grandson (Stephanie’s son) Taylor is being groomed to eventually take a more leading role in operations.  One of his current additions to the mix, is putting Treadway’s produce in the Oakwood Farmer’s Market.  This has helped introduce more Dayton people to their amazing goods.
What is the secret to 46 years of successful farming and produce sales?

Frank Treadway says “word of mouth,” and points to the customers who were sitting and talking to each other.  He feels the inviting atmosphere makes customers comfortable and coming back for more.

Stephanie says passion plays a big part too.  “If a person has passion for what they are doing they will succeed.   It seems that success comes if you are passionate about anything you do and are a well rounded person.”   Great advice from one of Centerville’s iconic families.

Make sure you visit Treadway’s Garden, have a seat in the shade, and enjoy the field of dreams yourself.

Please browse the photos below and see what the garden has to offer.

489e2d3a-c13e-4751-afe8-0f357a4e7b11Dayton International Airport has brought back a traveler convenience that had virtually disappeared in recent years–public telephones.  Nine telephones are now located throughout the airport, including one in the pre-security/baggage claim area.  The phones may be used free of charge, though long distance charges must be paid (calling cards may be purchased at any of the airport’s news and gift shops).

“Nearly everyone carries a cell phone today, of course,” said Director of Aviation Terry Slaybaugh. “But every now and then a cell battery dies, or a phone may be needed for any number of reasons. Dayton International Airport is happy to provide this convenience.” Each phone is accompanied by a video monitor showing phone use instructions and informational messaging from the airport.

Emergency calls are forwarded to the airport police, and the airport information desk is also accessible from the phones.

End of Summer Weekend Fun!

August 28, 2015 By Melissa Ledinsky

Daytonians this weekend is shaping up to be full of  fun outdoor events for the whole family! The end of the summer is ripe with activities, time to get out and enjoy the season with some unique experiences. Summer fun on the farm festival, a very special corn maze, and a volleyball tournament that supports an honorable cause are all happening this weekend right here in your home town!

The Summer Fun on the Farm Festival will be held at Bonnybrook Farms on

Saturday, August 29th. Come out to one of the most beautiful farms in the tri-state area and enjoy a whole day of activity, fun, and of course, food! There is something for everyone at this festival from a 5K trail run/walk throughout 370 acres of beautiful farmland,  a delightful lineup of live country music including the Noah Smith Band, Wilder and 90 Proof Twang, mouth-watering BBQ, farm fresh sides, desserts and ice cream, fun of the farm activities and contests for all ages. The cost is $5-$10 and begins at 10:00 am until 8:00 pm. The cost is $5-$10 and begins at 10:00 am until 8:00 pm. Bonnybrook Farms has been celebrating Ohio’s rich agricultural heritage for over 45 years and is one of the finest equestrian centers in the Midwest. This festival is definitely worth attending on Saturday!

listing_8762--7478Young’s Jersey Dairy now has a very special corn maze. This maze was named after Cowvin, the baby of the Cow Family, and he has created a family fun maze. The maze is created from over 150,000 square feet (more than 3½ acres) of cornfield and has over one mile of paths. Cowvin’s Corny Maze goes through the big cornfield and has many twists, dead-ends and tricky twists.  Needless to say, it’s an adventure! Bring your comfortable athletic shoes because you will be in for a nice bout of exercise navigating this course. The maze is open this weekend, Saturday, August 29th and Sunday, August 30th from 11:00 am until 6:00 pm. After September 4th, the maze will be open daily during the same hours until October 31st. Ages 5 and up, the cost is $5.50 per person, children under 4 are free. After figuring out Cowvin’s Corny Maze some ice cream might be just hit the spot at Young’s Jersey Dairy!

Show off your volleyball skills to support the Fallen Warrior Memorial photo

The Fallen Warrior Memorial Sand Volleyball Tournament will take place on Saturday, August 29th at Setter’s Volleyball Club. Registration begins at 9:00 am, and the tournament officially gets under way at 10:00 a.m. All proceeds will benefit the construction of the Fallen Warrior Memorial Park at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. The memorial park honors local community members who have made the ultimate sacrifice for his or her country. This is a wonderful way to give back to those who gave so much not only for the community, also for the nation. Extra bonuses, spending a day outdoors being active and some awesome raffle prizes! Support your community and a very worthy cause all at the same time.

All of these events should keep you very busy this weekend! Farm festival fun, a corn maze expedition, and an honorable volleyball tournament. It’s time to get out and get moving Dayton!

DIARY OF A TEENAGE GIRL & Important Parking News at THE NEON

August 27, 2015 By Jonathan McNeal

Hello Everyone.

A new, wonderful film that has garnered amazing critical response is now playing at THE NEON – THE DIARY OF A TEENAGE GIRL. In addition, we are holding the incredible film with Jason Segel – THE END OF THE TOUR as well as our biggest hit of 2015 – MR. HOLMES. To read more about our held-over titles, please visit our website at www.neonmovies.com.

Synopsis for THE DIARY OF A TEENAGE GIRL: “Like most teenage girls, Minnie Goetze (Bel Powley) is longing for love, acceptance and a sense of purpose in the world. Minnie begins a complex love affair with her mother’s (Kristen Wiig) boyfriend, “the handsomest man in the world,” Monroe (Alexander Skarsgard). What follows is a sharp, funny and provocative account of one girl’s sexual and artistic awakening, without judgment.” (taken from Sony Classics) Given 100% reviews from The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Washington Post and many more. Entertainment Weekly wrote, “…there are moments you’ll ache for Minnie and other ones where you’ll want to lock her away – it rings much truer than most coming-of-age stories.” Peter Travers of Rolling Stone wrote, “Powley is sensational, expertly blending hilarity and heartbreak. Her scenes with Wiig, sublime in her hard-won gravity, are unique and unforgettable. Just like the movie.” Click this LINK to visit the film’s official website.

The Deaf Community Resource Center is bringing a special, one-time screening of THE DEAF CLUB to town on Thursday, Sept. 24 at 7:30. This movie is completely done in sign language (though subtitles are available for those who don’t sign). “Deaf people have it all – friends, romance, fights, etc. – at their own club, where everyone uses sign language. Suddenly, the members face a situation where their precious club may have to close. Can they save the deaf club? Almost the entire production team is deaf or hard of hearing.” (taken from press notes) Tickets, just $10 each, will be available at THE NEON’s box office beginning Monday, Aug 24.

On Saturday, September 26 at Noon, Twentig, Inc. will host a special benefit screening and discussion of the film BELLE.” BELLE is a historical fictionalization of a true story about Dido Elizabeth Belle who was born of mixed race in the West Indies. She lived with her great uncle William Murray, the first Earl of Mansfield, Lord Chief Justice of England. Lord Mansfield’s decision on a case in 1786 in the English Courts led to the abolition of slavery in Britain. The film was inspired by the 1779 painting of Belle beside her cousin Lady Elizabeth Murray at Kenwood House.” (taken from press notes) Tickets are $30 each and come with admission to the film, the post-film discussion, a glass of wine and popcorn.

As many of you have noticed, we now share our parking lot with Drake’s Gym (a boxing and CrossFit gym now located in the former Greyhound building). This Saturday, the gym is hosting a big fundraising boxing match in our shared parking lot. This means that parking will not be available in that lot all day on Saturday. Please remember that we do validate for the Convention Center Parking Lot on Saturdays…so give yourselves a little extra time to find parking if you’re coming to see a film on Saturday afternoon/evening.

Thanks for your continued support.
We hope to see you this weekend!
Jonathan

New Limited Release Frappuccinos at Starbucks

August 27, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

ydRMDa5W-7360-4912Just as summer is coming to an end, Starbucks has introduced 2 brand new limited time Frappuccinos.  The chain has dubbed these flavors the “Last Sip of Summer,” and you’ll be able to order them through September 7th at participating locations.

According to Starbucks, Blackberries & Crème brings together a blend of blackberries, vanilla bean, milk, and ice. The frosty delight is topped with whipped cream and cinnamon dolce sprinkled as a garnish.

The second flavor, Strawberry Shortcake, is a tasty reminder of the summertime dessert. It features a blend of strawberries with strawberry juice, vanilla bean, hazelnut syrup, and milk and ice. Just like the sweet baked confection, the Frappuccino flavor is topped with whipped cream.

And don’t worry the  Pumpkin Spice Lattes are on deck!

Pick something up this week and get stronger.

August 25, 2015 By Jason Harrison

You’ve heard the advice about grocery shopping, right? About how you should shop the outside aisles where most of the fresh fruits, vegetables, and meats reside? I like that advice. It’s simple and easy to understand. Shop where the real food is.

When it comes to exercise, allow me to give you some similar advice. Shop the outside aisles. Only in this case, you’re looking for free weights (your fruits, veggies, and meat) and not for the machines (your processed foods and children’s cereals).

IMG_5642

You can make your muscles sore by sitting on a tricep extension machine and isolating one muscle group out of many. But soreness isn’t your goal when it comes to fitness; mobility, strength, body composition, bone density, and coordination are.

When you’re standing up and holding a thing, like a barbell, dumbbell, or kettlebell, and you lift that thing over your head, your body has to execute a complex set of operations to ensure that your spine doesn’t collapse on itself and your deltoids don’t get shredded apart. This complex movement helps you do everyday things better, like put a heavy thing on a tall shelf—or if you’re someone like a firefighter, pull a ceiling down.

Machines might make you feel safer, and you might even be able to make yourself sore using them, but I would much rather have a person who is new to fitness learn how to squat than sit on a leg extension or leg press machine. After all, every single one of us has to squat every single day. Why not learn how to do it properly, all the while building muscle and transforming your body composition?

IMG_5640

I’m a personal trainer by trade, but I’ll let you in on a dirty little secret: you don’t need me to learn how to lift weights. If you have an injury history, would feel better about having expert supervision, or you’ve been having trouble on your own, of course hiring a good coach might be necessary. However, with a little perseverance, YouTube navigation skills, and Googling acumen you could probably figure out the basics on your own.

Below is a workout to get you started. You’ll notice it consists of a two-leg movement (the goblet squat), a horizontal press, a horizontal pull, a vertical press, and a vertical pull. If you did this sample workout, say, two days a week, you’d be off to a great start. I’d recommend three sets of ten repetitions for each exercise, resting a minute to ninety seconds in between each set and about two minutes in between each exercise. When you can lift the weight for three sets of ten, add five pounds the next time.

IMG_5645

This is a beginner workout, which means if you’re dedicated to it you’ll outgrow it quickly and will need to move on to more advanced set and rep schemes (not to mention additional exercises). This is a good problem to have.

If you’re intimidated by the free weight section of your local gym, try out this framework and see how you do. My guess is you’ll get over your insecurity within one or two sessions and you’ll be well on your way to building a stronger, more mobile, and leaner body.

TEDx Dayton Returns Oct 16th

August 25, 2015 By Lisa Grigsby

tedx-dayton-marvIn 2013 Larry & Marilyn Klaben lead the team that brought the TEDx talks to Dayton. More than 30 engaging speakers and performers took the stage during to unleash ideas that would Infuse and Inspire.

According to Dayton Daily News reporter Dave Larsen “More than 900 people attended the fast-paced, day-long forum, which featured more than 30 local speakers” who challenged us to follow the fear, find our voice, question the equation, get over ourselves, build memories, imagine a world with hate, embrace our past , move through the shadows, rewire our brains, adopt  and date our city.

In 2014 there was a second sell out event, that promised to Explore, Exchange and Excite. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, we were asked if we were OK with ourselves or prisoners of shame, seeing our reality,  or creating something timeless, exploring bias and creating successful collaboration, if we have to be a jerk to win or were having an alien experience  were we stopping the silence, embracing our driveway moments and wondering if glitter makes everything better.

Tonight the official kick off for speakers and sponsors was held to introduce the third edition of  TEDx Dayton that will happen on Friday, October 16th:

02b54165-6bac-45cf-b12d-97dd3f6c48a4-2Registration will be open to the public starting at 9 am Wednesday, August 26 and you can register for $50, which includes lunch or at the student rate (ID Required) for $18. Organizers expect another quick sell-out this year, so don’t procrastinate if you want to be part of the audience for TEDxDayton this year.
